Matthew Wade needed a stroke of luck to drive Australia to the Twenty20 World Cup final, but he refused to label it a watershed moment in their thrilling semi-final triumph over Pakistan on Thursday.

Chasing 177, Australia needed 22 runs off the final two overs against a Pakistan squad that had surged into the semi-finals as the tournament's only team with a perfect group record.

In the last over from Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali dropped Wade, and the Australian wicketkeeper replied by smashing three sixes in a row to win a thrilling triumph with one over to spare.

Wade was named man-of-the-match for his unbeaten 41 off 17 balls, while Marcus Stoinis contributed a crucial unbeaten 40.

"I think by the time that the catch drop went down, I was pretty confident we were in a really good position to get the runs," the 33-year-old Wade said.

"If that had happened three or four overs before hand, that would dictate the outcome of the game a little bit more."

Wade had not been very concerned.

"I would still be pretty confident with Pat (Cummins) coming in and Marcus still at the crease, that we could have got the job done anyway," he said. "I wouldn`t say that was the reason why we won the game."

Shadab Khan took the heart out of Australia's top order with four wickets before David Warner reached 49, but Stoinis put their pursuit back on track, and Wade ended it in style.

"Marcus Stoinis played a terrific innings to be able to get it to a total we started to think could be chaseable towards the end there," Wade said.

"The way he played freed me up to be able to do what I did at the end there. The way Marcus Stoinis batted at the end, to be honest, was probably the turning-point of the match," Wade said.

Warner was declared to be caught behind, despite the fact that replays showed no advantage, and surprisingly,&nbsp;the opener did not challenge the judgement.

"I think there was a noise, he wasn`t sure. Maybe his bat handle clicked or his hand on his bat," Wade said.

"He didn't think that he hit it. But I think Glenn (Maxwell) at the other end heard the noise."

In the final on Sunday in Dubai, Australia will meet trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand.

Former pacer Brett Lee believes with David Warner in prime form, "underdogs" Australia are well poised to clinch their maiden ICC T20 World Cup title this time.

But for that to realise, Australia first will have to beat firm favourites Pakistan in the second semifinal here on Thursday.

"After almost a month of action, it all comes down to five days, four teams and three matches at the ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup 2021. And I reckon this could be Australia's year," he wrote in a column for the ICC.

"England are the favourites from here but I sense the belief in the Australia camp and I think there is some real momentum there. Everything is clicking nicely ahead of Thursday's semi-final against Pakistan."

Lee said he had faith on Warner's ability to regain form and had a chat with him ahead of the tournament.

"I was speaking to David Warner before it started and told him 'I have you down to be Australia's leading run-scorer, so don't let me down!' I did that on the belief that he is a big-match player, a big tournament player and that has not changed.

In the run-up to the World Cup, Australia had lost five straight series, suffering defeats against Bangladesh, West Indies, New Zealand, India and England.

Lee feels coming into the tournament on a low has helped Australia immensely.

"They have been underdogs in this tournament and going under the radar has really helped them.

"When you go in as one of the favourites like England, with their history and success, it breeds confidence but also expectations.

"If England don't beat New Zealand and make the final, people will be asking questions, just like India, who started slowly and didn't peak at the right time."

The 45-year-old former tear-away pacer feels the four semifinalists rightfully deserved their places in the business end of the tournament.

"I think we have the right four teams in the semi-finals and it's interesting to note that only one of them is from the sub-continent. We thought the conditions would favour the likes of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan but it just didn't happen for them," Lee said.

"A key reason for Australia's success is how they have utilised spin. With the bat, we have some great players of spin and they have shown that in this tournament, but the big weapon is Adam Zampa," Lee wrote.

"His form spinning the ball has been key and Australia have embraced a different T20 style with him. Before, the method was always to try to score 170-odd and then try and blow teams away with the quicks. But they know they can't do that in the UAE and introducing a bigger spin element has helped massively."

Lee advised Australian players just to enjoy the moment.

"The advice I would give is to enjoy it. Enjoy how far you have come. Focus on the strengths, and the strengths for all four teams are they have done the basics far better than most other teams. T20 cricket is about match-winners, big runs and big totals. But it is also about the one per-cent moments," he said.

But now Warner had scored 187 runs in five matches, averaging 46.75 and strike rate of 144.96 with fifties against Sri Lanka and West Indies in Super 12. 
 
"I was never worried one bit about Dave's form. He's one of the all-time great batsmen of our era. I think you can look at it as though he had a really lean IPL and then the start of this tournament. But the two halves of the IPL were a long way apart. So, if you miss out a couple of times at the end of the first part, which was in India, and then the first couple of games in Dubai, it looks as though a run of form is a pattern there. But I certainly wasn't worried. He's all class, trained hard, mentally fresh and ready to go. It`s great to see the best of him fit and firing. It`s a great sight when he`s up and about and scoring runs for Australia." 
 
Finch felt that momentum is something which doesn't carry forward in a tournament like this. "I don't think that momentum is something that really goes over -- in a tournament like this, I don't think it carries over a huge amount because you're playing a totally different opposition, in different conditions. One thing that -- all you can control is your process and your planning, and we've been doing that really well. We've got confidence in that. With New Zealand needing 57 off the last four overs in their chase of 167 in Abu Dhabi, England ended up losing with an over to spare with Jimmy Neesham's 11-ball assault of 27 sealing the fate of the contest.

The bitter defeat reminded Hussain of England's spectacular loss in the final of the 2016 World T20 against West Indies at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.

"I have been saying Jordan's death bowling has not been quite as good in the last year or so and that is maybe because Eoin Morgan has gone away from the plan of bowling yorkers," he added.

"But it's not easy and anyone can go for big runs if they are fractionally off. This is not a case of Jordan costing England the World Cup and I hope people don't interpret it that way.

"Someone has to put their hand up and bowl at the most difficult times when the opposition are coming at you. It just didn't work out for him on the night."

But Moeen hit back with his 37-ball knock and put on a key partnership of 63 with Dawid Malan, who hit 41, for the third wicket. Pace bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult kept a tight leash in the first three overs before Buttler smashed two successive boundaries.

Jonny Bairstow also got a couple of fours but did not look comfortable after being promoted to open in place of the injured Jason Roy. Adam Milne replaced fellow quick Boult from one end to break through as he got Bairstow out for 13 off 17 balls with Williamson taking a sharp catch at mid-off.

In-form Buttler tried to rebuild but an attempt to reverse sweep leg-spinner Ish Sodhi got him trapped lbw for 29 off 24 deliveries. The left-handed Malan, who was dropped on 10 by wicketkeeper Devon Conway off Jimmy Neesham, hit the first six of the innings off Southee in the 16th over but departed the next ball caught behind.&nbsp;

But Moeen launched an attack as he hit Sodhi for a six and then smashed Milne for two hits over the fence. Liam Livingstone hit 17 off 10 balls before departing and Moeen completed his first fifty of the tournament with a boundary off Neesham.&nbsp;
