Last year, only 27 per cent of citizens agreed that there was too much immigration in the country.

Survey finds 44% of Canadians say there's too much immigration, reflects criticism of Trudeau govt's policy

The results of a caste survey by the government of Bihar have been made public. More than 63 per cent of the east Indian state's population belongs to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), as per the data. How significant is this data for the state and national politics?

The Bihar legislature unanimously approved a resolution on the caste-based survey, said the state's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The survey took into account a person's economic situation in addition to their caste, which will help build new policies and programmes for the advancement of all classes.

Caste Census: A contentious issue

Data on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were published following every independent India census from 1951 to 2011, but no information on other castes. Before that, caste information was included in every Census up until 1931.

Caste-based data, however, was gathered but not released in 1941. There would not have been an all-India caste table, according to MWM Yeats, the census commissioner at the time.

The contention was that the time has passed for this large, expensive table to be a part of the main project.

As a result, there is now no accurate estimate for the population of OBCs, different groupings within the OBCs, and other disadvantaged groups.

What is the caste survey in Bihar?

The caste survey results were made public by the Bihar government on Monday (Oct 2).

The national census, which was intended to be performed in 2021 but has yet to begin, was only going to include members of the scheduled castes (SCs) and scheduled tribes (STs), but the Nitish government decided to survey on its own last year.

The Bihar assembly had unanimously approved the caste survey idea twice, first in 2019 and once in 2020. Nitish Kumar, the chief minister from the Janata Dal United (JD-U) party, was working with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the time, which now sits in the Opposition.

The state administration began the survey procedure this year.

In the interim, Nitish severed connections with the BJP and established a coalition government with erstwhile enemy the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and others in what is known as the "Mahagatbandhan" (Grand Alliance) to rule the state.

The Grand Alliance is part of a 28-party national opposition alliance, INDIA, which aims to unseat Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the general elections of 2024.

The caste census got off to a rocky start in January and was put on hold by the Patna High Court due to petitions opposing it. However, once the courts approved the exercise in August and dismissed the pleas, the exercise was continued.

The exercise was funded with Rs 1 billion by the Nitish government last year, and the deadline was set for February 2023. However, the exercise started in January instead of February, and the results were released nine months later than expected.

Although it is officially referred to as a "caste survey," in all actuality, it is a census because the exercise tallied the state's population and recorded it according to the caste identification of the people enumerated.

The Bihar caste survey's results

According to the Bihar caste survey, the 'backward communities' make up about 63 per cent of the state's population.

Out of Bihar's estimated population of 130 million, the largest group is the extremely backward classes (EBCs), which make up about 36 per cent.

With roughly 27.13 per cent, the other backward classes (OBCs) come in second.

According to the caste study, the Yadavas, an OBC group that includes the family of former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, make up the largest social group in the state with a 14.27 per cent share of the population. The Janata Dal-United (JD-U) of Nitish is in coalition with the RJD, and Tejashwi, the son of Lalu, is the deputy chief minister of Bihar.

According to the caste study, scheduled castes (SCs), also known as Dalits, make up 19.65 per cent of the state's population, and scheduled tribes (STs) make up roughly 1.68 per cent of the population of Bihar.

About 15.52 per cent of the people in the state fall under the "unreserved category," often known as the "general" category. This group is referred to as the "upper castes" in general.

The caste survey's sociopolitical importance

The demand for adequate representation of historically underrepresented communities in public institutions and politics is linked to the call for the caste survey.

Currently, there is a 15 per cent reservation for scheduled castes (SCs) in government employment and higher education, a 7 per cent reservation for scheduled tribes (STs), and a 22 per cent reservation for other backward classes (OBCs).

Political parties make their estimates in states and for Lok Sabha and Assembly seats during elections. The Mandal Commission put the OBC population at 52 per cent; other estimates have been based on data from the National Sample Survey.

The question arises, is this a political motive? If yes, then who shall benefit from it? To understand the nuances, Wion spoke to Dr. Sajjan Kumar, political analyst, and researcher.

“An updated caste data is required not because to promote caste system but for proper implementation of the government schemes. So, it should have been done way before, as caste is a reality," he said.

"The problem comes with how you utilise the data, What are the intentions? there lies the policy and politics."

Kumar noted that there are different ways of reading the data.

The EBCs constitute the majority, he pointed out, adding that the opposition party will try to make it upper-class versus the OBCs "but it may also snowball into dominant OBCS, the middle-class OBCs, and the extremely backward class OBCs."

There has been no significant representation of the EBCs in the last 33 years, Kumar pointed out.

"Since 1990, Bihar has been ruled by an OBC politician. Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi, and Nitish Kumar belong to Yadav and Kurmis. Then what about EBCs? What is their credential?

"Now the BJP may use this data to play against the Yadav and Kurmis for OBCs and the EBCs because in terms of representation. The BJP gets votes from the weaker OBCs and EBCs,” he added.

India has been ranked 52nd out of 121 countries in Digital Quality of Life Index survey. The survey has been carried out by cybersecurity firm Surfshark. The annual survey by the Netherlands-based firm has ranked 121 countries on five factors: internet quality, internet affordability, e-infrastructure, e-government and e-security.

“In many nations, ‘digital quality of life’ has merged into the broader concept of overall ‘quality of life’. There’s no other way to look at it now that so many daily activities, including work, education, and leisure, are done online. That’s why it’s crucial to pinpoint the areas in which a nation’s digital quality of life thrives and where attention is needed, which is the precise purpose of the DQL Index”, says Surfshark spokesperson Gabriele Racaityte-Karasauske.

India was ranked 59th last year. This means that it has jumped seven places this time. Surfshark has said that this jump is due to improvement in internet quality in the country. In terms of internet quality, India ranks 16th among 121 countries.

The survey has placed Singapore and Saudi Arabia in top positions when average internet speed is considered. It stands at 300 Mbps and 310 Mbps respectively.

India may not have the fastest internet but the internet is highly stable. The report notes that mobile internet speeds in the country have improved by a staggering 297 per cent. This has been attributed to widespread 5G rollout. When it comes to fixed broadband speeds, a modest increase of 16 per cent has been seen.

The index also says that India is the country with better internet affordability. Indians reportedly have to work 1 hour 48 minutes every month in order to afford a fixed broadband line and 44 minutes 22 seconds to afford an access to mobile internet.

Watch | India ranks 52nd in Digital Quality of Life survey as country's phone internet speed goes up by 297% × In terms of e-infrastructure, India is placed at 91st position. In terms of factors like internet affordability, e-governance and e-security, India was placed on 28th, 25th and 66th positions respectively. America, the land of the free and the home of the brave celebrated its 247th year of Independence last week. Unfortunately, the week also marked more than 350 incidents of mass shootings in America this year alone. Baltimore, Philadelphia, Fort Worth & Shreveport...city after city came under attack during the fourth of July holiday weekend. At least a dozen people lost their lives and 60 others were injured, some critically. America, once again, was left stunned, paranoid, baffled, and grieving. With more guns than inhabitants, the United States has the highest rate of gun deaths of any developed country. Surveys have established that 57% of Americans are in favour of stricter gun laws. But the Republicans, the staunch defenders of America's constitutional right to bear arms, have repeatedly, for years, opposed any effort to tighten gun control measures. Mohammed Saleh explores the gun violence endemic America is afflicted with.

The recent legal setback seems to have had an effect on Donald Trump’s popularity polls, as a new survey has shown that the former US president has lost six points in Republican voter polls.

A CNN/SSRS survey released on Tuesday has revealed that Trump still holds the lead over his rival Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (47 per cent to 26 per cent).

The poll was conducted earlier this month after Trump was arraigned in federal court last week. The survey focused on Republicans and Republican-leaning voters who were asked who they will support.

In May, the same survey showed Trump leading DeSantis (53 per cent to 26 per cent).

Last week, a federal grand jury indicted Trump for allegedly willfully mishandling classified documents, obstruction of justice and making false statements. He has been charged with over 37 counts, including the Espionage Act.

Responding to the survey, a Trump campaign official said in a statement, "President Trump continues to dominate in poll after poll— both nationally and statewide."

GOP also sees marginal drop

Apart from a marginal drop in support for Trump’s candidacy, the survey also found his favourability rating among Republican-aligned (GOP) voters waning from 77 per cent in May to 67 per cent in June.

At the same time, those who say they would not support him for the nomination under any circumstances has climbed, from 16 per cent in May to 23 per cent now.

Among the men and voters aged between 18 and 49, their support of Trump declined by 9 points; 7 points among voters making less than $50,000 a year; and 6 points among voters aged 50 to 64, in addition to voters making more than $50,000 a year.

Moreover, there has been a similar increase in the share saying they would not back DeSantis under any circumstances, up 6 points to 21 per cent.

Nevertheless, the recent ratings would likely have little effect on Trump who still holds a strong command compared to the Florida governor at 26 per cent. Former vice president Mike Pence was the only other hopeful to come near double digits at 9 per cent.

Air New Zealand has said that the process is part of a passenger weight survey to gather real-world data on the weight load and distribution of planes. The airlines' load control improvement specialist Alastair James, in a statement, said that they weigh “everything” which goes onboard the aircraft “from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold.”

He added, “For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey.” Air New Zealand also told NPR, that it is for “safety reasons” that they weigh everything onboard the aircraft and the survey is also mandated by the country’s civil aviation authority.

Process will be anonymous, optional

“No one can see your weight, not even us,” said James. The airline also said that they acknowledge that standing on the weighing scale in public “can be daunting”. However, they have asked people not to worry as the scales will not display the passengers’ weight and the data will be “directly fed into a computer and recorded anonymously along with thousands of other passengers.”

The passengers will be asked to stand on a digital scale when they check-in for their flight before reaching the boarding gate. The so-called passenger weight survey aims to collect data from at least 10,000 passengers and those who do not wish to participate can skip it.

“It’s simple, it’s voluntary, and by weighing in, you’ll be helping us to fly you safely and efficiently, every time,” said James. The survey began for selected Air New Zealand flights departing from Auckland, on Sunday and will go on till July 2. However, this is not the first time that Air New Zealand has asked the weight of its passengers.

In 2021, domestic passengers participated in a similar survey but the one for international travellers was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, any amount of weight in an aircraft affects virtually everything, including, the plane’s climb rate to its cruising altitude, speed and manoeuvrability, said a report by NPR citing United States Federal Aviation Authorities.
Air New Zealand to weigh passengers before they board int’l flights. Here’s why

A survey conducted by the YouGov poll with nearly 2,086 UK adults for the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) found that people are too tired to make healthy lifestyle choices. It found that nearly 40 per cent of all reported cancer cases can be avoided if people choose to live with a healthy lifestyle.

Additionally, about 35 per cent of the people are just tired to make the necessary healthy changes to their diet and lifestyle which would boost their physical activity levels and help them bridge the gap between intentions and concrete actions.

Only one in four (24%) surveyed stated that nothing stopped them from making healthy changes to their lifestyle.

Most people are 'feeling too tired' to be healthy, says YouGov Poll

A majority, or 63 per cent of Americans, surveyed in a new poll say US President Joe Biden does not have the mental sharpness to serve effectively in second term while 54 per cent say Donald Trump is sufficiently sharp mentally.

This is a new low for Biden as earlier in 2020, 43 per cent believed Biden does not have the mental capability to be a president. A year ago, it was 54 per cent who believed the same.

This came in a random nationwide survey of 1,006 US adults for the Washington Post-ABC News poll from April 28 to May 3. It shows how US President Joe Biden faces significant obstacles as his reelection campaign gets underway.

As many as 62 per cent of Americans say the 80-years-old Biden is not in good enough physical health to be effective as a president. In contrast, 64 per cent of Americans say former US president Donald Trump is physically fit enough to serve. It is pertinent to note that Trump would turn 78 in January 2025 at the time of the next inauguration.

Biden's overall ratings is currently at 36%, down from 42% in February and almost equal to the previous low of 37% in an early 2022 Post-ABC survey. 56 per cent of people disapprove of him, including 47 per cent who do so "strongly."

Americans believe that Trump handled the economy better while he was president than Biden has thus far, according to a poll, by a margin of 54 per cent to 36 per cent.

On the subject of honesty and reliability, neither Biden nor Trump are seen favourably, but Trump is viewed more unfavourably because to his frequent fabrications that the 2020 election was rigged and therefore stolen.

In a world where 25 hours on average are being spent by executives every week attending meetings, a recent survey suggests that offices can run smoothly even after cutting down those video calls and project updates to half.

The survey was conducted on around 10,000 desk workers by Future Forum, a research consortium supported by Salesforce Inc-owned Slack Technologies.

The study revealed that business leaders have been attending many unproductive meetings with the hope that it would be a good use of their working hours, but it ultimately wasn't.

The meetings are also attended by employees to show their manager that they are working and because they don't want to miss something important, the survey found.

For the employees in the lower position, the reason for attending the meetings is that they don't have a choice. The study's findings come at a time when various organisations are making efforts to understand which meetings are really important and which ones need to be jettisoned in a growing hybrid workplace where staffers are not always present at the same location.

Canadian e-commerce site Shopify Inc said that it is working to eliminate 320,000 hours of meetings in 2023 by suspending all recurring meetings that are held with more than two people, making Wednesday a “no-meetings” day and putting a limit on large gatherings while encouraging employees to decline some invites.

ALSO READ | No ethics needed for AI? Microsoft sacks entire ethics and society team that ensures AI principles The meetings are also attended by employees to show their manager that they are working and because they don't want to miss something important, the survey found. WATCH | Gravitas: Will 2023 be about returning to offices? Another survey suggested that around $100 million is wasted every year on non-critical meetings at big organisations, which also found that workers decline only 14 per cent of invites even though they are willing to back out from 31 per cent of them. Brian Elliott, a Slack executive who oversees the research of Future Forum, said, "There's no one-size-fits-all approach to eliminating unnecessary meetings.
How much money will you need to be comfortable when you retire is one of the trickiest financial problems. The latest Bloomberg news survey says at least $3 million is needed for a secure retirement. When asked how much is enough to be comfortable when you retire, Bloomberg's MLIV Pulse survey of 553 investors globally showed about a third bet on $3 million and roughly another third pencilled in $5 million.

But the respondents were not sure if they would have enough money saved to support their current standard of living after retiring from work.

I would like to have samosas with tea! Ever thought of listening to this from the mouth of a young Britisher? If not, don't worry; in the coming years, you might see this deep-fried Indian snack on the UK's menu. According to a recent study, samosas (fried South Asian pastry) are popular not only among Indians but also among Britons.

The Indian snack, which holds a very special place in the hearts of all the Indians out there, is slowly and steadily gaining popularity among the British youth.

The new survey conducted by the United Kingdom Tea & Infusions Association (UKTIA) has found that while tea remains a staple, the choice of what to eat with it is changing.

The youth are looking for options that are more stomach-filling than just eating biscuits as tea accompaniments. Things such as granola bars and samosas with a savoury filling have emerged as the first choices of the youth.

The survey, which has been conducted on 1, 000 people by the United Kingdom Tea & Infusions Association (UKTIA) has found that granola bars are the tea snack of choice for one in ten 18 to 29-year-olds, this was double the proportion of over 65s, per PTI.

Samosa has come out as a second choice, with some 8 per cent of youngsters choosing the deep-fried snack with their tea. However, no one over 65 age has preferred choosing Samosa as the first choice.

“I think granola bars are probably also quite filling, so maybe people are having that as a snack with their tea to fill them up,” Dr Sharon Hall, the chief executive of the UKTIA, told The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

“They may be looking for something a little bit more substantial. The same would apply to a samosa,” she added.

Hall also suggested that younger people are preferring different dishes because of the memories that they have with the dishes which they may have eaten while travelling to different places.

“One thing that we are interested to find out more about is maybe such food reminds them of recent travels they have taken and a cuppa with a samosa takes them back to that memory. We know from the data that a cuppa (tea) triggers many sorts of positive emotions, and that’s something that really cuts across all age groups,” she said.

Biscuits sale at risk -

In a further study conducted by market research company Mintel interviewed 2,000 tea drinkers between August and October, and found that the “future sales of sweet biscuits are at risk if the younger generation does not establish the hot drink with biscuits habit”.

“Gen Z have little time for the old rules of three formal meals per day, and TikTok has introduced them to a melting point of culinary traditions. Snacks won’t ruin the meal, they are the meal,” Jonny Forsyth, director at the group’s subsidiary Mintel Food and Drink, told the newspaper, as per PTI.

As with sexual abuse, women were found to have experienced higher incidences of psychological violence and harassment. However, the frequency of psychological abuse was higher for men.

Incidents of physical violence were also found to be prevalent. 277 million or 8.5 per cent have faced abuse in the form of hitting, restraining or spitting.

As per ILO, this could be chalked up to due to a "fear of stigmatisation, lack of knowledge of reporting and monitoring systems, “normalisation” of violence and harassment, and re-victimisation or retaliation risks". The most common fears that discouraged people from talking about the abuse were "waste of time" and "fear for their reputation."

Rather than using other informal or formal channels, the victims were more likely to have these conversations with friends and family. As per ILO, this could be chalked up to due to a "fear of stigmatisation, lack of knowledge of reporting and monitoring systems, “normalisation” of violence and harassment, and re-victimisation or retaliation risks". The most common fears that discouraged people from talking about the abuse were "waste of time" and "fear for their reputation." The report recommends that prevention mechanisms should be put in place; existing national and workplace mechanisms could be broadened or adapted to prevent abuse in the workplace. Additionally, it advocates increasing awareness of violence and harassment, enhancing the capability of institutions to deliver effective remedies, and supporting and establishing a right-based framework to help combat the problem.
