During the pandemic, there were many more entirely remote jobs posted on LinkedIn than ever before, but Roslansky said data suggested that kind of position may have reached its peak.&nbsp;

About 2 per cent&nbsp;of the 14 or 15 million job listings that are regularly active on LinkedIn contained remote work before the outbreak, he said to the BBC. That was 20 per cent&nbsp;a few months ago, but it has now decreased to 15 per cent&nbsp;this month.&nbsp;

A new survey has found that a majority of pilots working in Indian airline companies have been suffering from “daytime sleepiness” which is generally triggered by extreme fatigue. Among the 542 pilots who took part in the survey, 66 per cent said that they have dozed off during their shift hours in the cockpit.&nbsp;

The survey was conducted by the non-profit organisation Safety Matters Foundation and it included “Indian pilots flying with regional, domestic, domestic with destinations within four hours flying”.&nbsp;

“Based on their responses, it was found that about 54% of the pilots suffer from severe excessive daytime sleepiness while 41% suffer from moderate daytime sleepiness,” the survey explained.&nbsp;

Fatigue is one of the main reasons attributed to airplane accidents and the study reaffirmed the fact that pilots are not coping well with the pressure that comes with their jobs. With companies looking to work with less than adequate workforces, timings have gone up for most pilots.&nbsp;

According to the survey, pilots earlier had to fly 30 hours a week but now, they can fly back-to-back once every week. That has resulted in added stress on the workforce resulting in more fatigue.&nbsp;

‘Corporate support for implementing and maintaining a safety culture needs to be enhanced. There is a general agreement that adequate manpower and resources are not put into safety. The DGCA has not implemented Fatigue risk management systems (FRMS) mandatorily and as such, no rules have been drafted to manage fatigue under FRMS. The prevailing rules are prescriptive and scientific principle on which DGCA has based the regulations for flight and the duty time remain debatable,’ said Captain Amit Singh, founder, Safety Matters Foundation.&nbsp;

A 2021 survey by the National Institute of Population&nbsp;and Social Security – a government-affiliated body in Tokyo – that was published this month says that 17.3 per cent of men and 14.6 per cent of women aged between 18 and 34 are giving up on marriage– the highest figure since the questionnaire was first conducted in 1982.

In the 1982 survey, merely 2.3 per cent of men and 4.1 per cent of women said they would never marry.

The survey comes on the back of new data released in the same year which showed that the Japanese population saw a drop of 3.5 per cent—the biggest ever decline—compared to 2020. The data released in May showed that Japan’s population fell by a record 644,000 last year – the 11th consecutive year of decline.

A myriad of factors have been attributed to the downward trend in starting a family.

According to experts, there has been a growing desire among young working women to enjoy the freedoms that come with being single and having a career, the Guardian reported.

Similarly, men also said that they enjoy leading a solitary life as they voiced concern over job security and not being able to earn enough money to sustain a family.&nbsp;

When asked what the “ideal” lifestyle for women would be, nearly 40 per cent of surveyed single men and 34 per cent of single women cited the ability to balance a career with raising children.

Moreover, a change of shifting attitudes towards gender roles was also witnessed, whereby less than 7 per cent wanted their future spouse to stay at home and look after the family.

The study titled ‘Views of American Democracy and Society and Support for Political Violence’, has stated that alienation and mistrust from democratic institutions have reached such a peak that substantial US minorities feel that violence is just as long as it serves its political ends, reports The Guardian.

&nbsp;“The prospect of large-scale violence in the near future is entirely plausible,” scientists have warned, adding that this is more than a year after the horrific Jan. 6 riots on Capitol Hill.

The team of scientists at the University of California, Davis, came to the conclusion after collating opinions of almost 9,000 people across the country to find out the acceptance rate of political violence.

The survey was done by scientists Garen Wintemute, Sonia Robinson and Andrew Crawford, and it was conducted over three weeks beginning on May 3.

The survey threw up some alarming statics. It says that 3 per cent of respondents or about 7 million people feel that political violence is usually or always justified. While one in four of the surveyors – equivalent to more than 60 million Americans – believe that violence can be justified “to preserve an American way of life based on western European traditions”.

But the most alarming aspect of the survey revealed that almost 7.1 per cent said that can kill a person to serve an important political goal. The UC Davis team points out that it is equivalent of 18 million Americans.

Apart from that,&nbsp;nearly a third of Americans surveyed among 9,000 believe the lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump.

The scientists claimed that extreme political polarisation, scepticism about government and democratic institutions, rising gun violence&nbsp;and increased firearms sales, along with the rampant spread of conspiracy theories and misinformation, have combined into a toxic soup.

After Covid pandemic, most Americans turned into ‘germaphobes’, says survey

The public is losing confidence in the democratically elected governments, a recent global survey has revealed, adding that pandemic response and pessimism over the economy has caused a major trust deficit.

The survey was done by Edelman Trust Barometer, which has been polling thousands of people for over two decades on trust in their governments, media, business and NGOs.

The report, which surveyed more than 36,000 people in 28 countries between November 1 and November 24 last year, found that the trust declined across all institutions compared to May 2020.

Only 61 <a name="_Hlk93431215">per cent </a>of survey respondents said they trust businesses to do the right thing, followed by 59 per cent trust in NGOs, 52 per cent in government and 50 per cent in media.&nbsp;

Comparatively, in May 2020, government was the most trusted source at 65 per cent, followed by business (62 per cent), NGOs (62 per cent) and media (56 per cent).&nbsp;

Surprisingly, people’s trust in the government seems to be high in autocratic countries, especially China, the survey noted.

“We really have a collapse of trust in democracies,” Richard Edelman, the head of the Edelman communications, told Reuters.

"It all goes back to: 'Do you have a sense of economic confidence?'" he added, noting high levels of concern about job losses linked either to the pandemic or automation.

The biggest losers of public trust over the last year were institutions in Germany, down 7 points to 46, Australia at 53 (-6), the Netherlands at 57 (-6), South Korea at 42 (-5) and the United States at 43 (-5).

By contrast, public trust in institutions in China stood at 83 per cent, up 11 points, 76 per cent in United Arab Emirates (+9) and 66% in Thailand (+5).

The trillions of dollars of stimulus spent by the world's richest nations to support their economies through the pandemic have failed to instil a lasting sense of confidence, the survey suggested.

But in China, nearly two-thirds were optimistic about their economic fortunes and 80 per cent of Indians believed they would be better off in five years.

Edelman said higher public trust levels in China were linked not just to economic perceptions but also to a greater sense of predictability about Chinese policy, not least on the pandemic.

Around 2,500 respondents belonging to different gender, age, political and other demographics were included in the survey. &nbsp;

In it, there were questions about confidence in Supreme Court, law enforcement, media, Congress, presidency and other institutions as well. &nbsp;

From 2019, the confidence began to fell in the military. It fell from 70% to 63% in 2019 and then down to 56% earlier this year. In nine months, it dropped to 45%. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Rachel Hoff, the Reagan Institute’s policy director, said, “... we’ve tested over the last three years a number of public institutions and institutional trust is declining overall in American society.” &nbsp;&nbsp;

“That’s perhaps not surprising, but the way that the military is falling so much more quickly than the other institutions, we think is notable, particularly in the light of the real understanding that the American people have about the national security threats we face,” added Hoff. &nbsp;

However, people in cereals and general cropping reported fewer causes of stress. About 70 per cent were not experiencing depression.

The rise in extreme weather is a cause of major concern as 44 per cent of people are calling it a matter of significant worry.

Isolation and long hours have also contributed in poor well-being. Younger people have reported higher levels of loneliness than across the general population.

Pakistan was ranked among the worst countries in Digital Quality of Life (DQL) Index 2021, slipping 14 places since last year and standing at the 97th spot among 110 countries, The Express Tribune reported.

The study shows that Pakistan is lagging behind India and Iran in DQL but performing better than Bangladesh.

The third annual edition of the DQL ranks Pakistan 97th among 110 countries and covering 90 per cent of the global population, according to an official statement.

Internet affordability and internet quality in Pakistan have been ranked at 66th and 74th on DQL Index, respectively, the report said.

However, out of 110 countries Pakistan stood at 106th spot in e-infrastructure, 98th in e-security and 85th in e-government.

Overall, Pakistan has demonstrated one of the most significant downfalls compared to DQL 2020, dropping from 83rd to 97th.

The study found that the country`s internet affordability has decreased by 14 per cent and is now around 50 per cent worse than the global average.

The country ranks 66th for internet affordability and is surpassed by India and Iran.

At the moment, people in Pakistan have to work more than four hours to afford the cheapest broadband package.

The United States of America has marketted itself as the guardian of democracy. But as it has turned out, much of the world sees them as threat to democracy, even a bigger one than China and Russia.

This assessment is based on a worldwide poll on democracy. It is done every year by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation. This time they polled around 50,000 people from 53 countries.

They were asked a range of questions like how they rank freedom of speech or the influence of big tech and social media.

This doesn't make sense at first glance. But things fall into place when it becomes clear that the poll was not about internal democracy but global democracy.

Let's consider America's chequered past with Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Vietnam. These are the countries the US invaded and destabilised.

US is the larger power in comparison to China and Russia. They have limited spheres of influence as compared to the US.

So in a global survey it is natural for more people to fear the US. But that doesn't mean the US is off the hook.

This survey is a reality check for Washington. They want to be the chief guardian of democracy. But with a negative rating of 44 per cent that's a difficult claim.

So is there any silver lining for America? There is.

A large chunk of the negative ratings came from Russia and China. Two of America's biggest rivals. And compared to last year,&nbsp;USA's ratings have improved.&nbsp;

So this survey should serve as a lesson. Democracy is not anyone's monopoly. The US is a democracy. But so are Germany, India, Japan and dozens of other countries. Each of them follows their own system.

This is what America finds hard to accept. It believes that democracy is what happens in Washington.

What does the survey have to say about this?

81 per cent of respondents endorsed democracy. They say it's the best form of government, despite everything. But 44 per cent of them also trashed the US.&nbsp;

What's more interesting about the findings is that some businesses have also featured in them: the big tech.

48 per cent people view tech companies as a threat to democracy. In the US that figure is almost 62 per cent.

People fear tech giants, more than curbs on free speech.

This is ironic as tech firms always use the argument of free speech to block regulation. Turns out, they are the bigger villain. And everyone knows that.

So the US, tech giants and China appear to be the big threat to democracy. But one indicator ranked higher than these three. And it's not something anyone would guess easily. It's economic inequality.

64 per cent of people called it the biggest threat to democracy. This is linked to the ongoing Wuhan virus pandemic.

It has put millions of people out of jobs. In 2020 70 per cent of people were happy with their government's pandemic response.

This was in both&nbsp;democracies and non-democracies. But one year later,&nbsp;democracies have fallen to 51 per cent. Looking at China would make this clearer.

China ignored human rights, consulted no one on lockdowns. And punished people who dissented. Decision-making appears easier in autocracies.

So what are the big takeaways from this survey?

Number one, America is not judge and jury. The star-spangled banner is not the chorus for democracy.

Number two, this is not an endorsement of either China or Russia. Their human rights records speak for themselves.

Number three, don't trust everything you see in a poll.

In this one, 71 per cent Chinese said they had the right amount of democracy.

If the right amount is none, then yes, they are right.

Worldwide poll shows most respondents think US is threat to democracy

The annual report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said on Tuesday that journalism was at least partly blocked in nearly three-quarters of the 180 countries surveyed. &nbsp;

Its World Press Freedom Index found 73 countries 'totally blocked or seriously impeded' journalism, while it was 'constrained' in 59 others, adding that many governments had used the pandemic to worsen repression. &nbsp;

"Journalism is the best vaccine against disinformation," RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said in a statement. &nbsp;

"Unfortunately, its production and distribution are too often blocked by political, economic, technological and, sometimes, even cultural factors."&nbsp;

Eritrea, North Korea, Turkmenistan, China and Djibouti fared worst overall in this year's RSF ranking. &nbsp;

Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Costa Rica were ranked highest. &nbsp;

The Middle East and North Africa region continues to be the most repressive for journalists, the report found, highlighting the worsening situation in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Syria over the past year. &nbsp;

"In this region, still the toughest and most dangerous for journalists, the pandemic has exacerbated the problems that have long plagued the press, which was already in its death throes," it said. &nbsp;

Malaysia recorded the worst deterioration, down 18 places in the ranking to 119, due in part to a recent 'anti-fake news' law "allowing the government to impose its own version of the truth".&nbsp;

RSF said the global level of media freedom remained largely stable overall for the past year, but noted that the figures had deteriorated by 12 per cent since the ranking was first launched in 2013. &nbsp;

Part of the problem is falling trust in journalists, fuelled by political polarisation and online misinformation. &nbsp;

RSF noted a recent survey by the Edelman Trust that found 59 per cent of respondents across 28 countries believed journalists deliberately misled the public. &nbsp;

The World Press Freedom Index is based on questionnaires sent to experts around the world, combined with data on abuse and acts of violence against journalists to form a picture that includes pluralism, media independence, self-censorship and other factors.&nbsp;

RSF said the global level of media freedom remained largely stable overall for the past year, but noted that the figures had deteriorated by 12 per cent since the ranking was first launched in 2013. Part of the problem is falling trust in journalists, fuelled by political polarisation and online misinformation. RSF noted a recent survey by the Edelman Trust that found 59 per cent of respondents across 28 countries believed journalists deliberately misled the public. Following Brazil were India and South Africa where 91 per cent respondents referred to the climate change crisis as severe. China followed with 89 per cent, Sweden with 88 per cent, while Australians appeared to be the least concerned with 70 per cent.

In the US, 73 per cent agreed that climate change is severe and requires immediate action.

"The main takeaway is that so many people … already today feel they are affected by climate change," Jens Orback, executive director of the Global Challenges Foundation told Reuters.

"There is a high amount of people asking international institutions to step up," he added.

According to the survey, which was conducted in June-July, climate change was among the top three risks faced by people in all countries.
