Fresh from an incredible hundred for Sunrisers Eastern Cape against JoBurg Super Kings in the semis of the ongoing SA20, South Africa’s Aiden Markram has expressed his desire to lead his new IPL franchise SunRisers Hyderabad in the upcoming season. Markram, who in the past had led Punjab Kings, knows a bit or two about leading teams in the cash-rich league where the competition is over the roof. Speaking after his heroic knock, when asked if he’d be okay in wearing the captain’s hat, Markram said he would take the leadership role – something that he now enjoys.

Having led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the finals of the inaugural edition in SA20, Markram is high on confidence and has his sight set on taking over the leadership role, if asked or offered, in SunRisers Hyderabad. At the IPL auction, SRH had spent INR 2.6 crores to bag Aiden’s service, and they will be keen on bringing the most out of him in this upcoming season that is slated to begin in March end.

"What’s going to happen, to be honest… either way we back the management's decision about who they want to be in charge," Markram said when asked about what he thinks of leading his franchise in IPL.

Gearing up for the all-important final against Pretoria Capitals in SA20 now scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 12th, Markram said becoming the captain is not everything – adding that every player can be a leader in some way or other.

"Becoming the captain is not the be all and end all. You can be in some form of leadership role too. But I am okay with captaincy, it's something that I enjoy doing," he said ahead of the SA20 final against Pretoria Capitals. I have been captaining for a while before this tournament started. It's been a nice experience, a fresh start, I would say," the 28-year-old added.

Meanwhile, other than him, other contenders to lead SRH are Mayank Agarwal and out-of-favour India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) IPL Auction 2023 complete players' list, full SRH Squad

The IPL 2023 mini-auction has started off with a bang. Among the early set of players, England's power-hitter Harry Brook -- who made heads turn during England's successful tour of Pakistan -- fetched a whopping deal after being acquired by the 2016 winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 13.25 crore (INR 132.5 million). On the other hand, SRH also got another big name in their kitty, getting Punjab Kings' (PBKS) former skipper Mayank Agarwal for INR 8.25 crore (INR 82.5 million).

Talking about Brook, the 23-year-old saw a big bidding war for him with SRH and Rajasthan Royals (RR) fighting hard for his services. After taking his price into double digits, the bidding war wasn't over before Hyderabad finally won the war by shelling out a huge sum.

Meanwhile, there were a lot of eyeballs on Mayank once his name was announced. The former Punjab captain's mention also led to a bidding war between SRH, Punjab, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before the former got him for INR 8.25 crore. It is to be noted that Hyderabad entered the IPL 2023 mini-auction with the largest purse; i.e. INR 42.25 crore (INR 422.5 million). Hence, they have started off on a smashing note by getting two big names under their belt.

It will be interesting to see if they go hard on some of the big all-rounders who can also captain them. At present, they have Bhuvneshwar Kumar as a captaincy option along with Mayank.

The IPL 2023 auction is here and on Friday, the ten franchises will be looking to add more firepower to their squads with 405 cricketers going under the hammer. Ahead of the auction, JioCinema conducted a mock one which produced some extremely exciting results. The auction included experts of the game like Eoin Morgan, Chris Gayle, Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina, Anil Kumble, RP Singh, Murali Karthik and Scott Styris – all of them representing the various different teams.

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green emerged as the highest-valued pick in the auction with Styris bidding Rs 20 crore while representing Sunrisers Hyderabad. While Green is expected to command a massive price, the 20 crore-mark has never been breached in the history of the tournament.

South African all-rounder Chris Morris is currently the costliest player in history as he was picked for Rs 16.25 crore by Rajasthan Royals in the 2021 edition of the competition.

Sam Curran was picked in the mock auction for Rs 19.5 crore while Ben Stokes fetched a high sum of Rs 19 crore. Odean Smith (8.5 crore) and Nicholas Pooran (8.5 crore) were also major picks.

Green, Curran and Stokes are the major names going into the auction and teams like Sunrisers, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings needing a major all-rounder in their ranks. With not many options in the auction, it is a possibility that any one of them can actually end up commanding such a big price.

IPL 2023 Retention: 2016 winners SRH release skipper Kane Williamson, Nicholas Pooran

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have appointed West Indies legend Brian Lara as the head coach of the team ahead of the new season. SRH have parted ways with former Australia cricketer Tom Moody and replaced him with Lara as the new head coach of the team.

Lara was already a part of the SRH backroom staff during IPL 2022 as he served as the team's strategic adviser last season. He has now been elevated to the head coach post and this will be his first assignment in the IPL as the coach of a team.

"The cricketing legend Brian Lara will be our head coach for the upcoming #IPL seasons," SRH said in a statement.

This was Moody's second stint as the head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad after he held the position for six seasons between 2013 to 2019 during his first stint. Moddy guided SRH to their maiden IPL title in 2016 and helped them develop a world-class squad during his first stint as the head coach.

However, his second stint with the franchise was far from perfect as SRH struggled to win matches consistently. The Orange Army finished a disappointing eighth last season after managing only six wins in 14 matches under Kane Williamson's captaincy.

Because someone who bowls at excess of 150 kph is very rare. I don’t like to see express pacers slow down to get control."

On Umran, the Aussie -- who claimed 563, 381 and 5 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively -- stated, "I haven’t seen a huge amount of Umran Malik but the fact that he can bowl at a good pace is impressive."

Are you listening, Umran Malik? Aussie great Glenn McGrath opines on pace vs control debate

Umran Malik had made heads turn throughout the IPL 2022 edition. His raw pace, deadly yorkers and some tidy spells changed the complexion of the game in favour of Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before the one-time winners' group stage exit.

Umran, however, returned with as many as 22 wickets and was the fourth-highest wicket-taker, overall, in the 15th season of the IPL, which ended with Gujarat Titans (GT) being crowned the eventual winners. Further, the Jammu & Kashmir speedster bowled the fastest ball of the match in every game SRH featured in and held the record for bowling the quickest ball of the season (157 kph) before Lockie Ferguson went past him in the final (by clocking 157.3 kph).

After a memorable IPL 2022 season, Umran is now part of India's T20I squad for the home series versus South Africa, which gets underway on June 09 in New Delhi. Before that, the 22-year-old revealed how SRH's bowling coach and legendary SA pacer Steyn had predicted his India call-up before IPL 2022.

"When I got selected for India, Dale sir (Steyn) was with me in the team bus. We were going for the match. Everyone congratulated me and Dale sir said, 'I told you before the IPL that you will get the India call-up after the season'. And that's exactly what happened, by the grace of god. My goal is to give my best for Team India now,” Malik said in the video shared by BCCI.

Pace sensation Umran Malik reveals how Dale Steyn had predicted his India call-up before IPL 2022

Former Australian pacer Brett Lee has heaped praise on Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) new find Umran Malik. Malik, the son of a fruit vendor from Kashmir, has made heads turn in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 edition. The 22-year-old Indian pacer had a sensational season, where he clocked 150kph on a regular basis and also returned with as many as 22 wickets at an average of 20.18 in 14 games.

Lee not only praised Umran for his raw pace, the ex-Aussie pacer compared the youngster to Pakistan's legendary speedster Waqar Younis. For the unversed, Younis churned out 373 and 416 wickets in Tests and ODIs, respectively, in his illustrious career.

"I am a big fan. I think Umran Malik has got a lot of pace to burn. He is a competitor, a top guy, who runs in like a lot of fast bowlers in the past. Waqar Younis is the person who comes to mind," Brett Lee told ANI.

Umran did leak runs in several games, however, he improved his line and lengths despite losing pace. Thus, he won the 'fastest delivery of the match' award in every game for the SRH (14 straight times). Thus, he will be eager to live upto high expectations and soon debut for India across formats.

Lee also opined on Virat Kohli's barren run in IPL 2022, where he ended with 341 runs at a strike rate of 115.98 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). "I am a massive Kohli fan like a lot of people in the world. I just hope that he really gets his opportunity. He just needs some time out. Spend some time with his family, get reset and hopefully, we can see him scoring some hundreds," said Lee about the former India and RCB captain.

Brett Lee lavishes huge praise on Umran Malik, compares SRH's ‘top guy' to legendary Pakistan pacer

Umran Malik's meteoric rise has been one of the major talking points from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer impressed with his raw pace by consistently clocking in excess of 150 kmph and rattled some of the best batters in the league. The 22-year-old fast bowler from Jammu & Kashmir also earned his maiden call up to the Indian team on the back of his impressive run for SRH in IPL 2022.

Speaking about Umran's rise this season, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said the fast bowler's future lies in his own hands and that he will have to ensure his fitness and pace remains unaffected to continue playing for Team India for a long time.

Dubbed as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Umran's ability to consistently clock over 150 kmph makes him a stand out fast bowler. While he finished his IPL 2022 campaign as the leading wicket-taker for SRH with 22 wickets from 14 matches, he also holds the record for bowling the fastest delivery of the season at 157 kmph.

“His future is in his hands. If he stays fit and bowls at this pace, I’m sure he will be around for a long time,” Ganguly said talking about Umran's rise in IPL 2022.

The BCCI president also spoke about the other youngsters who impressed for their respective teams in IPL 2022. Ganguly praised the likes of Tilak Verma, Rahul Tripathi and Rahul Tewatia among others for their heroics for their respective teams this season.

We have seen many emerging fast bowlers like Umran Malik, Mohsin Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan… It’s a place where talent gets exposure," said Ganguly.

'He will be around for a long time': BCCI president Sourav Ganguly reacts to Umran Malik's rise in IPL 2022

Punjab Kings ended their campaign on a winning note, crushing an already demoralised Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in an inconsequential final IPL league match here on Sunday.

Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad managed only 157 for 8 on a good batting track.

But it was never going to be enough as Liam Livingstone made mincemeat of a hapless SRH attack, scoring 49 not out off 22 balls, and also hitting the coveted 1000th six of the tournament.

Shikhar Dhawan (39 off 32 balls) and Jitesh Sharma (19 off 7 balls) also contributed handsomely to the team's cause as the chase was completed in just 15.1 overs.

Punjab Kings, who haven't made the play-offs since their final appearance in 2014, finished sixth while the Sunrisers ended their high-spending IPL on eighth in the 10-team competition.

For Livingstone, it was all about smashing big sixes once again as he hit five in all, while Dhawan helped himself to two fours and two sixes.

It was Jonny Bairstow (23 off 15 balls), who straightaway attacked Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Washington Sundar, with a flurry of boundaries to set the tempo.

It helped Dhawan to play his accumulating game as Punjab maintained their philosophy of all out attack even as Sunrisers dropped some sitters on the field.

Worst was Washington Sundar's blooper when Livingstine tried to hit Jagadeesha Suchit against the turn and offered a dolly at point.

There were too many on-field bungles with Roamrio Shepherd's 15th over going for 23 runs.

Earlier, Punjab Kings bowlers showed a lot of discipline, restricting SRH to 157 for 8 in 20 overs.

Arshdeep Singh (0/25 in 4 overs) celebrated his maiden India call-up with another parsimonious spell but it was his state team colleague Harpreet Brar (3/26 in 4 overs), who was the pick of the bowlers with wickets of Priyam Garg, Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram.

With four qualifiers already decided on Saturday, there was little more than academic interest left in the game and the 'Orange Army' in fact looked jaded and more like going through the motions while batting before sprucing up their scores in the final few overs.

SRH's best batter of the season, Abhishek Sharma (43 off 32 balls) once again got a start but should have converted it into a big one which didn't happen.

A solemn looking Tripathi (20) did cross a personal milestone of 400 runs for the season but disappointment of not making it to the national team was writ large in his body language as he failed to connect the big hits.

Brar didn't do anything extraordinary and kept it mostly on the stumps, stifling the opposition batters for runs.

It was left to Romario Shepherd (26 not out off 15 balls) and Washington Sundar (25 off 19 balls) to take the Sunrisers past the 150-run mark, as both of them used the long handle to good effect in their 58-run sixth-wicket partnership off only 4.5 overs.

In fact, 50-plus runs came in the last four overs as Nathan Ellis (3/40 in 4 overs) erred in length despite a couple of back-to-back wickets that he got in the bargain.

Ellis did bowl a good hat-trick delivery which Bhuvneshwar Kumar averted only to get run-out of the very next delivery.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer Umran Malik earned his dream maiden call up to the Indian team on Sunday (May 22) as the selectors announced India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home. Malik enjoyed an impressive campaign for SRH in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and has also been deemed one of the finds of the tournament.

The 21-year-old fast bowler has been consistently clocking over 150 kmph with the ball and has impressed with his raw pace. He was on the selectors' radar ahead of the squad announcement and has been rewarded for his bowling exploits in IPL 2022. Umran is among a host of players who have made the cut in India's squad on the back of their brilliant show in IPL this season.

While he has been fast-tracked into the Indian team for the South Africa ODI series, it remains to be seen if Umran will make the cut in India's playing XI for the first T20I against the Proteas directly. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently shared his views on the chances of Umran's inclusion straightway in India's playing XI.

Shastri believes going by his current form Umran deserves to be included in the playing XI for the series opener between India and South Africa which will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on June 09.

"On current form, they might just play (him). If he is bowling well in the nets, doing the right things, they will unleash him at the earliest against South Africa. His (Umran) association with the team is the absolute right thing because at least he can be groomed properly," Shastri said on ESPNCricinfo.

Umran made his IPL debut for SRH last season but did enough to impress the team management as he was retained ahead of the mega auction this year. He featured in all 14 matches for the franchise this season and finished the season as the highest wicket-taker for the Kane Williamson-led side with 22 wickets in 14 matches.

However, Umran's bowling heroics failed to inspire SRH to the playoffs as Williamson & Co. could only manage 12 points in 14 matches in IPL 2022.

The exclusion of Rahul Tripathi from the Indian cricket team squad for the T20I series against South Africa came as a surprise for a lot of people after his brilliant show in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The top order batsman, who was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for a massive Rs 85 million, scored 393 runs in 13 matches till now with an impressive strike rate of 161.72.

Former Australian cricket team opener Matthew Hayden lauded Tripathi for his aggressive brand of cricket at the top of the innings and urged India to take him in the T20 World Cup 2022 squad.

Tripathi has been a consistent performer for SRH this season and Hayden backed him to perform well on the bouncy pitches in Australia during the T20 World Cup later this year.

Punjab Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2022: Head-to-head, stats, trivia and predicted XIs

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will take on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their final league game of the season in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday (May 22). It will be a dead rubber between the two sides as both the teams have already been knocked out of the race for the playoffs.

Both SRH and Punjab Kings have so far managed six wins each in 13 games so far and would be ruing their mistakes this season as just one more win could have put them in contention for a spot in the top four with 16 points. However, the winner of tonight's encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will finish outside the top four.

While Punjab Kings have failed to win two matches on the trot so far this season, SRH were once on an unbeaten streak of as many as five matches before their campaign went downhill. The Kane Williamson-led side lost their first two games in a row at the start of their campaign before winning the next five on the trot.

However, SRH endured a five-match losing streak as they failed to make it to the playoffs despite being favourites to finish in the top four once. SRH will now hope to finish their disappointing season on a high with a win against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede on Sunday.

The Orange Army will be without skipper Kane Williamson for their final game of the season as the Kiwi batter flew back home after the birth of his child. In his absence, veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is expected to lead SRH against Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings.

While the encounter is all set to be a dead rubber, Punjab Kings will also be hoping to end the season on a high with a win in their bag in their final game. While Agarwal has been lauded by many for his captaincy, he has not been able to be among the runs for Punjab Kings and will be hoping to end the season with a big knock on Sunday.

West Indies legend Brian Lara was all praise for Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Umran Malik and he went on to compare the youngster with compatriot Fidel Edwards. It has been a season to remember for Malik as he has taken 21 wickets from 13 matches and Lara believes that the 22-year-old will eventually play for India on the international stage.

"Umran Malik reminds me a lot about Fidel Edwards when he first started, a lot of pace and I hope that he understands it as he goes into international cricket, which I think he'll eventually play," Lara said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Live'.

Former Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri also praised the youngster and on ESPNCricinfo 'Time-Out', he said that Malik should be kept in the national team so that he can learn from veterans like Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.

"(BCCI) Central contract straightaway. Don't let him float around, keep him in the mix with the main players. Then he learns by being around the Shamis and Bumrahs and see the way they train, see the way they manage their workload. Of course, the team management and support staff will be there. But don't let him go astray. Keep him in the mix," said Shastri.

"I think he'll get better and better. You see his bowling, once he takes a wicket. Look at the lines he starts bowling as opposed when he is not getting a wicket. That's when he struggles, his lines are all over the place. You don't want him to cut down on pace. The last thing you'd want to tell him is while looking for control you cut down on pace. What you want him to do is get his lines right. If he can attack the stumps by constantly varying his length, he will trouble anyone. And he can really rattle a new guy coming in because he's got the pace, he can keep the bloke on his toes but it's that line if he can hit the channel without reducing his pace, it'll make a huge difference," he added.

Hayden's comments came after Tripathi played a brilliant knock of 76 runs in SRH's must-win clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday (May 17). Tripathi came in to bat at number three after SRH lost opener Abhishek Sharma cheaply on just 9 off 10 balls.

He wasted no time in settling down and went after the Mumbai Indians bowlers from the word go. Tripathi combined with Priyam Garg (42) to add 78 runs for the second wicket before adding another important stand of 76 runs for the third wicket with Nicholas Pooran (38). He dazzled with his control and brilliant stroke play during his knock.

Tripathi also took on Jasprit Bumrah and made great utilisation of his pace to play shots all parts of the ground. Impressed by his batting, Hayden lauded Tripathi for his ability to go big from the word go and said it was a good decision from SRH to send him up the order in place of skipper Kane Williamson.

“I just love his ability to upfront so hard. I think that’s what has been really missing inside the SRH batting line-up. That powerplay is so significant. especially when the wickets are getting slower, so the first 6 overs, you have to make use of it. It was a really good leadership decision as well to get back down the order,” Hayden said on Star Sports.

Tripathi is not new to performing in the IPL and has been one of the consistent Indian batters for a number of years now. Last year, he played an instrumental role in helping his former side Kolkata Knight Riders reach the final of IPL 2021 and has continued his fine form for SRH this season.

Hayden believes Tripathi has all the qualities to play international cricket for India and he won't mind having him in the country's squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 this year where tracks are expected to be pacy and bouncy.

Several fans and experts have already called for Tripathi's inclusion in India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home in order to give him enough opportunities ahead of the T20 World Cup.

“The way Tripathi took up the responsibility was good to watch. I think he has got some real potential in the future to go all the way at the international level. He is someone that is a dangerous striker of the ball, he can hit both sides of the wicket. In particular, what impresses the most is his ability to play short-pitched bowling," said Hayden.

“I mean, getting to Australia, let’s just take the liberty to say that’s where it is, not saying he will be picked, but he has the game on bouncy wickets,” he added.

SRH star Rahul Tripathi has the potential to go all the way in international cricket, says Matthew Hayden

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 3 runs in a thrilling encounter in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday (May 17) to remain alive in the race for the playoffs. After a solid show from the batters, the SRH bowlers managed to hold their nerves during MI's run-chase to secure an all-important win for the team.

Asked to chase down a target of 194 runs, Mumbai Indians got off to a great start with openers Rohit Sharma (48) and Ishan Kishan (43) adding a 95-run stand for the first wicket. Tim David then played a sensational cameo of 18-ball 46 but failed to take his side home as SRH bowlers did well to stop MI on 190/7 in 20 overs.

While Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with exceptional figures of 1/26 in his 4 overs, including a wicket-maiden 19th over, Umran Malik roared back to form. Umran picked up a three-wicket haul while conceding only 23 runs in his three overs.

Umran has been a revelation for Sunrisers Hyderabad this season and has been constantly garnering the limelight owing to his exploits with the ball. The SRH pacer, who has impressed with his raw pace and wicket-taking ability, has been one of the finds of the season.

After his brilliant performance against MI on Tuesday, former India head coach Ravi Shastri lavished praise on the young fast bowler and urged the BCCI to hand him a central contract as soon as possible. Shastri wants Umran to be fast-tracked into the Indian team so he can improve with time while learning from the senior players in the Indian team.

“Central contract straightaway for him (Umran Malik). Don’t let him float around, keep him in the mix with the main players and let him learn by being around the Shamis and Bumrahs and see the way they train, the way they manage their workload but don’t let him go astray,” Shastri said on ESPNCricinfo.

Umran had struggled to deliver in the last few games for SRH as he went wicketless in as many as four matches and also ended up conceding a lot of runs. However, he bounced back with a good spell against MI on Tuesday and will be hoping to continue his fine form in SRH's final game of the season. Shastri believes the pacer will keep getting better with time.

“I think he’ll get better and better. Look at the lines he is bowling now. You don’t want him to cut down on pace. The last thing you’d want to tell him is while looking for control you cut down on pace. What you want him to do is get his lines right. If he can attack the stumps consistently varying his length, he will trouble anyone. And he can really rattle a new guy coming in because he’s got the pace, he can keep the batter on his toes but it’s that line if he can hit the right areas without reducing his pace, it’ll make a huge difference,” Shastri added.

'Central contract straightaway': Ravi Shastri wants BCCI to fast-track SRH pacer Umran Malik into Team India

Rahul Tripathi batted like a man on a mission before Umran Malik sizzled with his pace as Sunrisers Hyderabad kept their slim IPL playoff hopes alive with a three-run win over Mumbai Indians here on Tuesday. Tripathi scored 76 from 44 balls to guide Sunrisers Hyderabad to a challenging 193 for six. He was ably complemented by Priyam Garg (42) and Nicholas Pooran (38).

Malik (3/23 in three overs) then produced a sensational performance, while the seasoned Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/26 off 4) bowled a wicket maiden in the crucial 19th over to stop MI at 190 for seven despite the best efforts by Rohit Sharma (48), Ishan Kishan (43) and Tim David (46).

The victory keeps SRH in the playoffs race on paper as they move up to 12 points. They need to win their last game and hope for other results to go their way.

Chasing 194, Rohit was at his effortless best and looked set for a big score. He gave a solid start to Mumbai's chase alongside Kishan, with whom he shared a 95-run opening stand. The two plundered 17 runs in the ninth over bowled by Malik, with the pacer guilty of bowling two no balls and a wide.

But two overs later, Kane Williamson's decision to bowl Washington Sundar (1/36) paid dividends as Rohit holed out to Jagadeesha Suchith in the deep. Kishan, who looked uncomfortable against Malik's short balls, followed his skipper in the next over as the Jammu pacer, who had a horrible first over, redeemed himself. He speared the ball at the stumps from round the wicket for Priyam Garg to complete a fine catch at mid-on.

The duo provided another breakthrough as Malik bowled another bouncer forcing Daniel Sams to pull. Garg jumped high above his head with his arms fully stretched to complete a brilliant catch at midwicket.

With 44 needed off 18, the big-hitting David blazed away to 46 off just 18 balls to keep alive Mumbai's hope for a fourth win this season. David hit four sixes off the 18th over bowled by T Natarajan, including a monstrous 114m hit, to bring the equation down to 19 from 12. However, Natarajan (0/60) managed to redeem himself off the last ball as David was run out.

The seasoned Bhuvneshwar bowled a wicket maiden 19th over to tilt the game back in SRH's favour. Earlier, Tripathi, who struck his third half century of the season with the help of nine fours and three sixes, set himself up brilliantly for a memorable knock.

Invited to bat, the Sunrisers' gamble to play Garg at the top of the order paid off. The 21-year-old played a fine knock while sharing a 78-run partnership with Tripathi after the in-form Abhishek Sharma (9) was sent back in the third over.

Garg, who was dropped on 10, made good use of his reprieve as he smashed the ball four times to the fence and twice over it in his 26-ball innings.

At the other end, Tripathi looked in his element. He smacked Jasprit Bumrah (1/32) for a six and back-to-back fours in the fifth over. Tripathi and Garg collected 57 in a productive powerplay and maintained a healthy run-rate which was close to 10 runs per over while batting responsibly.

Once Garg was caught and bowled by medium-pacer Ramandeep Singh (3/20), Pooran, who was promoted to No. 3, joined the party. The flamboyant left-hander smoked two consecutive sixes over long on and deep backward square off Riley Meredith (1/44) in the 13th over before whacking Mayank Markande (0/31) for a boundary and a maximum in the next over.

The MI bowlers, led by Ramandeep, were able to stage a mini-comeback as they got rid of Pooran, Tripathi and Aiden Markram (2) in the space of eight balls.

Batting down the order, skipper Kane Williamson's (8 not out) struggles continued as he was unable to get the big shots going. The Sunrisers, who were looking set for a 200 plus score, could manage only one boundary in the last two overs, which yielded 19 runs.

IPL 2022: Rahul Tripathi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar star as SRH beat MI by 3 runs, keep playoffs hopes intact

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are currently enduring a horrible run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as their playoffs hopes hang by the thinnest thread. SRH have 10 points from 12 matches and have an outside chance of making it to the playoffs if they can win their remaining two matches along with some favour from the other teams.

SRH had gotten off to a shaky start this season with back-to-back losses in their first two games. However, they looked on course to securing a berth in the playoffs after winning five matches in a row following defeats in the first two games. They had ten points with seven matches in hand.

However, their campaign has derailed ever since as they find themselves on the brink of elimination after losing their last five matches in a row. Sunrisers Hyderabad are winless for the last three weeks and a defeat against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday (May 17) will confirm their ouster from the tournament.

One of the major reasons behind SRH's struggles this season has been the poor form of captain Kane Williamson. The SRH skipper has failed to score runs consistently and has so far managed only 218 runs in 12 matches at a poor average of 18.91 and an even worse strike rate of just 92.85.

Amid his horrendous run with the bat and SRH's poor show in the tournament, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has suggested Williamson to give up captaincy and focus on his batting. Harbhajan recalled how Ricky Ponting did something similar in 2013 when he left captaincy midway through the season and helped the team win the title.

"Something similar happened with Ricky Ponting in 2013. He was captaining the team but he realized that he was letting the team down with his batting. So after 5-6 games, he himself stepped down and became a part of the think tank and we won the title that year," Harbhajan said on Sportskeeda.

"Williamson should think of handing the captaincy to someone else and focus on his batting. If he wants to be the captain again, he can come back next year," he added.

The former India spinner, who won a combined four IPL titles with Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings before retiring, was critical of Williamson's decision to bowl Washington Sundar in the 20th over against KKR in SRH's last outing. Harbhajan said it was a huge error from Williamson to bowl Sundar against Andre Russell in the last over.

"Giving Washington Sundar the 20th over that day (against KKR) was a huge error by Williamson, Tom Moody or whoever made that decision. Even a non-cricket person would understand that bowling off -spin to Russell at the death wasn't the right decision," said Harbhajan.

'Focus on batting': Harbhajan Singh urges Kane Williamson to step down as SRH captain amid team's poor run

The race for the playoffs is heating up in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as seven teams remain in the fray to clinch the remaining three spots in the top four. Gujarat Titans (GT) were the first and the only team so far to have qualified for the playoffs this season as they continue to enjoy a stellar season under captain Hardik Pandya.

Lucknow Super Giants had twin chances to become the second team to make it to the playoff this season but back-to-back losses for KL Rahul & Co. in their last two games mean they are still stuck at the third spot on the points table with just one game in hand.

While Gujarat Titans have already qualified for the playoffs, Rajasthan Royals (RR) and LSG are all but certain to get through as they have 16 points each with one game to go and a healthy positive net run rate. With three spots done and dusted, there will be a battle between as many as five teams for the final fourth spot in the playoffs.

Here is a look at what the five teams need to do to make it to the IPL 2022 playoffs:

Delhi Capitals:

Delhi Capitals are among the favourites to qualify for the playoffs as Rishabh Pant & Co. have their fate in their own hands. With a net run rate of +0.255, DC have 14 points in 13 matches and a game in hand. If they manage to win their final game against Mumbai Indians, they are certain to qualify. Even a loss will keep them in contention with 14 points.

Royal Challengers Bangalore:

Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore once looked set to enter the playoffs comfortably as they were enjoying a tremendous run in the competition. However, their defeat against Punjab Kings in their last game have put them in a tricky situation. RCB will play their last game against Gujarat Titans and only a win can see them make it to the playoffs as they have a negative net run rate.

Kolkata Knight Riders:

Shreyas Iyer & Co. also have an outside chance of qualifying with 12 points from 13 matches so far. KKR will need a favour from other teams and a big win against Lucknow Super Giants in their final game to make it to top four. KKR have a very slim chance of finishing in the top four.

Punjab Kings:

Punjab Kings' chances are even slimmer as they have a negative net run rate of -0.043 despite having the same number of points as KKR - 12. Only a big win in their final game against Sunrisers Hyderabad and some other results going in their favour will ensure their progression in the playoffs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad:

Sunrisers Hyderabad too have an outside chance of making it to the playoffs with 10 points in 12 matches so far this season. They are in a must-win situation in their last two games and a loss against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday (May 17) will confirm their elimination from the tournament.

Also Read: Why would ICC ban him otherwise? With a net run rate of +0.255, DC have 14 points in 13 matches and a game in hand. If they manage to win their final game against Mumbai Indians, they are certain to qualify. Even a loss will keep them in contention with 14 points. Royal Challengers Bangalore: Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore once looked set to enter the playoffs comfortably as they were enjoying a tremendous run in the competition. However, their defeat against Punjab Kings in their last game have put them in a tricky situation. RCB will play their last game against Gujarat Titans and only a win can see them make it to the playoffs as they have a negative net run rate. IPL 2022 playoffs scenario explained! What RCB, DC, KKR, SRH and PBKS need to finish in top four?

Match 65 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the bottom-ranked Mumbai Indians (MI) face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (May 17). While MI franchise were the first to be out of the playoffs race, their win would do a world of good for teams such as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Along with the SRH, the above four franchises are also in the fight for the playoffs spot, mainly targetting the fourth slot, and, hence, MI's win will dent SRH's chances.

Talking about the Rohit Sharma-led five-time winners, they have had a torrid run in IPL 2022. Losing as many as eight games on the trot, MI finally got off the mark in their ninth attempt and have been competitive ever since to have won two more from the next three outings. Thus, they will hope to end the season on a high with back-to-back wins and avoid a wooden spoon finish.

On the other hand, the Kane Williamson-led SRH franchise have had a peculiar season. While they lost their opening two games, they won five games in succession and have now conceded the momentum with a five-match losing streak. Thus, they have succumbed to pressure in the most crunch moment of the league stage and are nearing an early exit. Will their limited resources stand tall and take them into the playoffs?

Match prediction for SRH vs MI clash: Both sides have a good rivalry, with MI leading SRH 10-8 in the head-to-head battle. Chasing has been preferable here at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and both captains will fancy it as both teams have different agendas and takeaways from the contest. MI to emerge on top at their favourite venue?

MI vs SRH, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match?

Andre Russell's all-round brilliance theoretically kept Kolkata Knight Riders in contention for a play-off berth as they recorded a comprehensive 54- run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in a must-win IPL game on Saturday.

It was Russell's unbeaten 49 off 28 balls that took KKR to 177 for six in 20 overs after being down and out at 94 for 5.

In reply, SRH were never in the hunt as they huffed and puffed their way to 123 for 8 against a collective bowling effort from Shreyas Iyer's men with the flamboyant Jamaican finishing with best figures of 3 for 22.

Umesh Yadav (1/19 in 4 overs), Tim Southee (2/23 in 4 overs), Varun Chakravarthy (1/25 in 4 overs) and Sunil Narine (1/34 in 4 overs) -- all stuck to their respective game plans with near-perfect executions over after over.

KKR now have 12 points from 13 games with a net run-rate of +0.160 and moved to sixth place.

With Rajasthan Royals (14 from 12) and RCB (14 from 13 games) having chance to move up, even a victory is unlikely to be enough for Shah Rukh Khan owned franchise which played its 13th 'first XI' combination in as many games.

For Sunrisers, 10 points from 12 games with a dismal NRR of -0.270 means that even two big wins and 14 points might not be enough after five straight defeats.

While he is a sentimental favourite among Indian cricket lovers, a lot of SRH's poor batting show could be attributed to skipper Kane Williamson's nightmarish season that has yielded only 208 runs in 12 games at an average of less than 19 and a strike-rate of 92.85.

Williamson (9 off 17 balls) has been SRH's weakest link this season and his failure at the top of the order has been one of the biggest reasons for their slump.

It was an ordeal for Williamson till Russell bowled one on the stumps to end his misery. Rahul Tripathi (9 off 1 balls) also looked scratchy even as Abhishek Sharma (43 off 28 balls) attacked Sunil Narine, hitting him for two sixes.

It was Tim Southee's brilliant reflex return catch that ended Tripathi's innings.

At the halfway stage, SRH weren't in a very comfortable position at 66 for two and even the statistic of teams chasing (highest successful chase of 170) at the Gahunje Stadium didn't paint an altogether rosy picture.

Once Abhishek was dismissed by Varun Chakaravarthy (1/25) and Narine took a fine return catch to dismiss SRH's big hope Nicholas Pooran (2), there wasn't much resistance from the rest of the batters.

Earlier, Umran Malik was back in his groove after a few forgettable outings as he ran through KKR's top-order but Russell along with Sam Billings (34 off 29 balls) added 63 runs for the sixth wicket to give the total a semblance of respectability after KKR were in trouble at 94 for 5.

KKR added 58 runs in the last five overs, mainly due to Russell as he hit three sixes off three full-tosses bowled by off-break bowler Washington Sundar (0/40 in 4 overs).

Malik (3/33 in 4 overs), who had gone for 120-odd runs in his last 10 overs (across 3 games) and that too wicketless, was back in his element as he bowled fast and straight to get rid of Nitish Rana (26 off 16 balls), Ajinkya Rahane (28 off 23 balls) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (15 off 9 balls) in his first two overs to peg back KKR.

He did get good support from T Natarajan (1/43), who nailed the block-hole deliveries with perfection, getting rid of Rinku Singh (5).

Venkatesh Iyer's "second season blues" continued as he chopped one from Marco Jansen (1/30 in 4 overs) onto the stumps.

As far as Rahane is concerned, he has well past his IPL sell-by date and even three sixes couldn't hide the fact that he played a lot of dot balls and once he started cramping, it became even more difficult to rotate the strike.

Finally he was out when he slashed hard at a wide rising delivery and Shashank Singh at sweeper cover fence maintained perfect body balance in a side on position to latch on to the catch.

Russell and Billings then took the attack back to the opposition camp with some big blows after initial period of struggle.

While the Jamaican had three fours and four sixes to his name, Billings hit three fours and one maximum.

IPL 2022: Kolkata Knight Riders 'stay alive' on paper after 54-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad

Kolkata Knight Riders moved up to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 points table with a comprehensive victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday. Andre Russell produced a brilliant all-round show while Tim Southee took two wickets as KKR registered a 54-run victory. This victory also kept their playoff chance alive with 12 points from 13 encounters with a net run rate of 0.160.

However, this was somewhat the end of the playoff chances for Sunrisers Hyderabad as they have just 10 points from 12 matches with a NRR of -0.270. However, they can still make it to the Top 4 as they have played a game less than KKR and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

IPL 2022: Updated points table after Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad

It has been a season to remember for young fast bowler Umran Malik who has impressed everyone with his express pace in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The youngster has earned praises from experts and spectators alike for his bowling and former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar believes Malik can be the one to beat his record of bowling the fastest delivery in world cricket. Akhtar holds the record with 161.3 kmph against England in the 2003 ICC World Cup.

"For the first time I have seen someone who is bowling 150kmph + consistently and I will be happy if he (Umran) breaks my record (of fastest delivery). Tode, jarur tode, and bagiar apne ko tode huae tode, (break, definitely break, but not yourself). I want to see his long career. Only a few days back, someone was saying to me that it has been 20 years and your record is still not broken. But I believe records are meant to be broken and I will be happy if he (Umran) does that," he told Sportskeeda.

"I want to see him on the world stage because that is where he belongs to. I definitely want him to keep this 100mph mark in his mind and join that special club," he added.
