Needing 54 off 18 balls, after a flurry of wickets fell in the middle overs, Chennai took the game deep courtesy of Dhoni and Jadeja's big hits but couldn't take their side past the finish line as they fell short by three runs. After the match, Matthew Hayden -- former Australia and CSK opener -- raised fitness concerns for Dhoni&nbsp;as he observed him to be having some issues in running between wickets.&nbsp;

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has confirmed that Dhoni isn't fit at the moment. "He is nursing a knee injury, which you can see in some of his movements, which is hindering him somewhat. But still what you saw today is a great player for us. His fitness has always been very professional," Fleming told reporters.

Owing to the unavailability of several first-team players, CSK brought in left-arm seamer Akash Singh into the XI against Rajasthan, who returned with figures of two for 40 in four overs. Tushar Deshpande, who suffered the wrath for leaking runs in the previous games, also picked up two wickets, while Magala conceded just 14 runs in two overs.

Speaking to the media after the match, Fleming told reporters, “For us again, it's losing another player, that's two games in a row and we're already pretty thin, so we'd like it (injuries) to stop.”

Lamenting over the untimely and unfortunate turn of events relating to injuries to fast bowlers, Fleming said the team is already operating on thin resources.&nbsp;

"Magala's hand was split, unfortunately, so he was unable to bowl those last two overs. And same with Deepak Chahar in the last game, so we're operating on pretty thin resources," Fleming said.

Adding further on the only overseas option available in Sri Lanka's Matheesha Pathirana, who got tested for Covid-19 during the New Zealand tour, Fleming said he has recovered and will remain in contention for selection.

The owners of the four-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions have bought the Johannesburg team in the CSA T20 league. The T20 tournament which is all set to get underway next year is yet to be officially named by the South African Cricket Board. All six franchises&nbsp;that&nbsp;will take part in the competition are owned by IPL team owners.

Dhoni could return in&nbsp;a mentor's role for the second time, but this time not in India. While Dhoni captains CSK in IPL, Fleming is the head coach of the four-time champions. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming recently opened up on the lack of chances for young all-rounder Rajvardhan Hangargekar in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. After CSK's opening game of the ongoing IPL 2022 season against KKR on Saturday, Fleming opened up on the change in captaincy and revealed he spoke about it with Dhoni last year. Fleming also said Dhoni wanted to give Jadeja a clean slate as captain heading into the season so the timing of the decision was his own.

"We talked about it. It's been something MS and I talked about during the last season," Fleming said on Saturday.

"The timing was MS's call. I think it's been documented that he wanted to give Jadeja the clean slate going into the series so it was communicated with Mr. Srinivasan and conveyed to the team. We 100% respect that," added the CSK head coach.

Dhoni and Fleming enjoyed a great captain-coach relationship for CSK as they together took the franchise to greater heights. Dhoni will be embarking on his 13th season with the franchise and 15th overall when he takes the field in the upcoming IPL 2022.

He recently recalled his first conversation with Dhoni, who was leading the now-defunct Pune franchise back then. Agoram revealed Dhoni told him in their first meeting that it was a pleasure to work with him but he would not like advice from the coach until he asked for it himself. Dhoni also told Agoram to conduct his strategy meetings with players and the other backroom staff but to not expect him in such meetings.

"When I had the opportunity to work with Mahendra Singh Dhoni for Pune Super Giants in IPL 2016, the first day we met he said, "Let's have a chat." We were in the Pune Stadium and he was about to put his pads on. He asked if he could get me a filter coffee. "Yes please," I replied. He called the guys there and gave a wink to get a filter coffee, and then continued chatting with me," Agoram wrote in his column for Cricbuzz.

"Look, I know you have a lot of experience in this field and that players like you, and the coach Stephen Fleming got you on board. It's a pleasure to work with you," Dhoni told Agoram.

"Give all the info and strategies to the coach and the players. Get the strategy meetings done with the players along with the coach, but don't expect me to be there and also don't give me any advice until I ask you. But mark a copy on the email on all your communications with the coach and players," added the former CSK captain.

Agoram went on to state that he was okay with all of Dhoni's conditions and was later stumped by the former CSK captain, who had ordered a masala chai and not a filter coffee for himself and the&nbsp;performance analyst coach. Dhoni later told&nbsp;Agoram&nbsp;that he was good at&nbsp;stumpings.

"I said this was okay. Then finally the filter coffee arrived. I had a sip and it was a masala chai. Dhoni looked at me with a smile and said, "I am good at stumpings"," wrote Agoram.

CSK managed to rope in some quality overseas players at nominal prices at the mega auction in the form of the Kiwi trio of Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway and Adam Milne. While all-rounder Santner and fast bowler Milne were&nbsp;bought for Rs 1.9 crore (INR 19 million) each, Conway was a steal for CSK at Rs 1 crore (INR 10 million).

Speaking about the Kiwi trio, Fleming said CSK got them for cheap at the mega auction and that they are all quality players, who can impress for the team this season.

“Well, they came cheap so it was good. They are all very skilful players. Devon Conway has had a great couple of years internationally. Mitch has been a stalwart for us. And in Adam Milne, we have got a bit of pace. So all three of them have great credentials and a good skill set for us,” said the CSK head coach.

Dhoni played a quickfire cameo of 6-ball 18 to help CSK chase down the target of 173 runs with two balls to spare and take his team into the final.

Dhoni rolled back the clock with his heroics as he once again soaked up the pressure in a tense situation and took CSK over the line in what was an epic run-chase. The CSK skipper was out of form throughout the season and many didn't expect him to come above Ravindra Jadeja in the 173-run chase with the Men in Yellow needing 24 runs to win from eleven balls.

However, the CSK skipper promoted himself above Jadeja and finished the game by scoring 18 runs off just six deliveries with the help of three fours and a six. "It was a difficult day for strokeplay. When 137 (136) is almost enough, I think it was a tough wicket to score big on in terms of the big shots. So both teams struggled with that towards the end of the innings. Sometimes you set your sights too high, [want] too many, and probably we were only 10-15 runs short of having a match-winning score," he added.

While Dhoni scored 18 off 27 balls, it was Rayudu's unbeaten 55 off 43 deliveries which helped CSK post a respectable total of 136 runs on the board. DC too struggled in the run-chase and were left reeling on 98/5 at one stage before Shimron Hetmyer slammed 28 not-out and combined with the tail-enders to help them secure a three-wicket win and go on top of the points table.

Fleming countered the 'lack of intent' criticism for Dhoni and said there was no lack of intent from the CSK skipper while crediting Delhi Capitals' bowlers for their impressive show in the death overs.

As his side fell short in its run chase against Rajasthan Royals despite having the former India captain at the crease.

Dhoni came out to bat at number seven in Tuesday's match and took time to settle down before unleashing his powerful shots. By the time he found his range, he did not have much balls at his disposal to knock off the required runs.

They eventually lost the match by 16 runs with Dhoni staying unbeaten on 29 off 17 balls.

Dhoni argued that the extended two-week quarantine of his side hampered his preparations as he did not get enough time for practice.

"We have this question every year. He was in in the 14th over, which is pretty much optimal time, and sort of batted accordingly. He is coming back from not playing a huge amount of cricket," Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

"So, the expectations to see him at his best is gonna take some time. But you see him towards the end, he was very good. Faf du Plessis carried the form, so we weren't too far away. It wasn't the batting that was the worry to be honest."

Dhoni sent the likes of Sam Curran and Kedar Jadhav ahead of him.

Asked about the rationale behind the move, the former New Zealand captain said, "MS is a specialist towards the end of the innings, always has been. Curran was there trying to hit and keep us in the game at that point when we were falling behind. He's got good hitting power like we saw."

"Ruturaj...It was his first game and we wanted to get him into the game into the order. We wanted to be aggressive, we've got a long batting order and we're just trying to use our resources smartly."

Fleming said his spinners were slow in adjusting the length of their deliveries (they bowled overpitched). Sanju Samson (74) was on fire against their spinners.

"Their (RR) hitting was very good in the 8 overs they faced. It was a good surface (to bat) and we were slow on adjusting. We did not adjust quickly. There was intent to adjust but execution was poor.

"So it was dangerous time and we had to just hang in there and try. We came close to pulling back to a manageable score but that last over took us out of reach."

Royals' tail-ender Jofra Archer hit Lungi Ngidi four sixes in the final over which yielded 30 runs to take the total to 216 for 7.

Royals' captain Steve Smith said Samson's brilliant performance has given him more options at top of the order.

"Samson takes the game head on and he hit some seriously good sixes. He has a positive intent and my role was to give him more strike. Fortunately it worked well," Smith, who was playing his first match after suffering concussion related issues in the United Kingdom, said.

"It gives more options. Samson played incredibly well. It seems everything he was hitting was going for a six. It was a serious innings. Jos (Buttler) coming for next game it is a big plus for us. Jofra (Archer) at the back end was absolutely amazing."

The star Australian batsman, however, said that Buttler is likely to bat as opener in their next game.

"We will wait and see. It gives options, does not it. We will do what we think is the best. Jos obviously has an incredible record on top. He probably slots himself back and it gives options for sure."

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has confirmed that their star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo will miss another couple of matches of the 13th IPL.

Despite missing the seasoned West Indian who is recovering from an injury, three-times winners CSK began their campaign on a positive note, beating arch-rivals Mumbai Indians by five wickets here on Saturday.

"Dwayne Bravo is out for a couple of games," Fleming said in the post-match press conference. 
Bravo picked a niggle during the recently-concluded Caribbean Premier League and didn't bowl in the final due to a knee injury.

Playing in place of Bravo, English all-rounder Sam Curran smashed 18 off six balls to help CSK cross the finish line after Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis' scored brisk half-centuries.

In his quota of four overs, Curran returned impressive figures of 1/28 while picking up the wicket of the dangerous looking Quinton de Kock, and then played a cameo with the bat.

"Curran's performance was terrific," Fleming said.

The head coach also heaped praise on Rayudu, who played a match-winning knock, making a 48-ball 71 and along with du Plessis, who scored an unbeaten 58, helped Chennai chase down a target of 163 with four balls to spare.

"Rayudu has been nothing short of fantastic. He has been pretty emotional and played a great knock," Fleming said.

The former New Zealand captain further said that the pitch was "difficult" to score and that the team is looking for ways to find the right balance.

While addressing his team's post-match press conference, Mumbai Indians pacer James Pattinson said that they were looking to bowl first.

"We were looking to bowl first, with the temperature being high at night time the ground does get a bit wet. So, there is an advantage in bowling first. Both the teams were looking to bowl first," Pattinson said.

"There's little bit of wetness around the grass. It skidded on a little bit. It was a good wicket overall," the Australian added.

Speaking about Kieron Pollard's batting position, Pattinson said that he expects the West Indian to bat higher up in the order in the future.

Pollard batted at number six against CSK.

"I think between him (Pollard) and the two Pandya brothers, it's just going to float at number 5, 6 and 7 depending on the situation of the game. I'm sure he'll bat higher at some stage, depending on the situation in the game," said Pattinson.

The bowler also talked about the absence of crowd in the IPL.

"You just have to make your own noise out there. It's obviously hard when you don't have fans cheering behind you, especially the Mumbai Indians fans who are great.

"Even though he has been so dynamic, there's still good work done by the other players. So, again, I stress it doesn't change our preparation to focus on one or two players, but we're acutely aware of how dangerous these players are so, it's business as usual for us," Fleming said.

With the flamboyant Jamaican being in red-hot form, Fleming said whether it is spin or seam, one had to be accurate against hitters like Russell.

"You've got to put context around that as well&nbsp;different stages of the game. Look at analysis and match up with what you have, it's no secret that we're spin-heavy anyway.

So, if there's an opportunity to change-up to Russell, we will certainly look at it.&nbsp;

"Whether it's spin or seam at the end you've to be accurate against hitters like Russell, Dhoni, Pollard and Pandya. It's no different really, the pressure is always on in the last few overs."&nbsp;

About the possibility of Chennai using spinners at the death, Fleming said things couldn't be over planned.

"Possibly. But, again, if it's dewy. Mitch Santner who is one of the best spinners around struggled to hold the ball...So, you can't overplan...We have to have a free mind and be smart enough to assess conditions."

Fleming said Dhoni and the team had moved away from too much of analysis and data.

"We've gone a long way away from that. A lot of teams are loading up on analysis and numbers and we've actually gone away from that. Sometimes, information overload can be confusing.
