“Because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah, they (the BCCI) are under the impression that they can trample and control SLC,” Ranatunga was quoted as saying by Daily Mirror.

“Jay Shah is running Sri Lanka Cricket. SLC is being ruined because of pressure from Jay Shah. One man in India is ruining Sri Lankan cricket. He is only powerful because of his father, who is India’s home minister," said Ranatunga referring to Amit Shah, a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet.

Ranatunga is a key figure in the middle of a power tussle within the SLC. Earlier this month, Sri Lanka's sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe sacked SLC board and installed an interim committee headed by Arjuna Ranatunga.

Ranasinghe cited widespread corruption charges as the main reason for the suspension of the entire board. However, the decision was quashed by Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal, which also restored the officials pending further inquiry, after SLC President Shammi Silva went to the judiciary body.

ICC suspends SLC

Consequently, ICC suspended SLC for failing to 'manage its affairs autonomously' during a crisis call last week.

"The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka," the ICC said in a statement.

Since then, Ranasinghe has denied any political interference behind his move, adding that the ICC move had been made without any consultation.

"This is not the way. When ICC or any other body apply a ban they have a long procedure...but this was a surprise, and it is not ethical," Ranasinghe told reporters.

"How can they condemn our country like this?," he added.

Following Sri Lanka's dismal performance at the ODI World Cup in India where the team failed to qualify for the knockouts as well as the Champions Trophy, the ongoing political turmoil is expected to further stagnate the development of cricket in the island nation.

World Cup 2023: Former captain Arjuna Ranatunga claims Jay Shah is running Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka will appeal against its suspension from the International Cricket Council (ICC), sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe said on Saturday (Nov 11) over the sacking of the board following the national team's dismal World Cup performance.

The ICC, the sport's governing body, suspended Sri Lanka Cricket's (SLC) membership with immediate effect on Friday, citing government interference in cricket in the country.

Sri Lanka's ministry of sport dismissed the SLC board and replaced it with an interim committee in the wake of the country's poor World Cup performance, but the country's Court of Appeal has put that move on hold.

In addition, the parliament in Colombo last Thursday unanimously adopted a proposal to remove the SLC leadership.

Speaking on Saturday, Ranasinghe denied that there was political interference in the running of Sri Lankan cricket, however, and said the ICC move had been made without any consultation.

"This is not the way. When ICC or any other body apply a ban they have a long procedure...but this was a surprise, and it is not ethical," Ranasinghe told reporters.

SLC officials separately denied corruption allegations and said they would work with Ranasinghe to get the ICC suspension lifted.

Sri Lanka won only two of their nine games at the World Cup. They sit ninth in the 10-team standings and are out of the competition.

Following the resignation of SLC secretary Mohan de Silva and the sacking of the board, Ranasinghe said he had replaced them with an interim committee chaired by World Cup-winning former captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

But ousted SLC President Shammi Silva went to court to fight the dismissal and has been granted a two-week stay order, with a full hearing to follow.

'It's not ethical...': Sports minister says Sri Lanka will appeal ICC suspension

It has been all chaos for Sri Lanka cricket as things have gone from bad to worse for the 1996 world champions. Yet to heal from the poor show in the ODI World Cup, Sri Lanka cricket faced another major setback on Thursday (Nov 9) after the parliament passed a resolution and asked the top officials to vacate their offices with immediate effect for charges related to corruption, allegedly running into millions of dollars.

What is the issue with the board?

Opposition leader of the Lankan Parliament Sajith Premadasa passed a resolution on Thursday asking the officials of the cricketing body to leave offices with immediate effect. In a unanimous decision, the ruling party agreed on the resolution.

The move is not binding but adds to pressure on the board, which the sports minister sacked on Monday only for the Court of Appeal to restore it the following day.

"This is a historic resolution that sends a message to the world that Sri Lankan legislators have united to defend cricket and restore the integrity of the game," Premadasa told the Sri Lankan parliament.

"We want the corrupt board to go."

Sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe has accused the board of widespread corruption. He sacked the elected members on Monday and replaced them with an interim committee headed by former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga.

Sri Lanka in chaos

After an appeal, the court restored the original board for two weeks on Tuesday but has now seen the hammer drop on them. It was accused that President Ranil Wickremesinghe was trying to defend corrupt officials after which sports minister Ranasinghe responded with the sacking of the officials.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) constitution does not permit the interference of political parties in the administrational affairs and has seen the board suspended in the past.

On the field, Sri Lanka have ended their ODI World Cup campaign with just four points in nine matches with wins against the Netherlands and Bangladesh. To make matters worse, they are all set to miss out on an automatic Champions Trophy qualification spot as they are likely to finish outside the top seven of the ODI World Cup standings.

Sri Lankan Parliament asks cricket board officials to resign over corruption charges

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) secretary Mohan de Silva has resigned amid the dismal campaign by Sri Lanka cricket team in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. The resignation comes after a strong criticism of the board members by Sri Lanka's sports minister. In Sri Lanka, the sports ministry oversees the SLC just like other sports bodies in the nation.

Sri Lanka are out of the race of semifinals in the ODI World Cup 2023 after their 302-run drubbing against India on November 2 in Mumbai. The Sports Minister had vowed to get answers from Sri Lanka Cricket after the dismal performance.

The Island nation had done well coming into the tournament by reaching the final of Asia Cup 2023 after beating Pakistan. The regional tournament's final, however, was a nightmare for them as they got bowled out for a paltry 50 runs with India's Mohammed Siraj taking six wickets in the game.

In the ODI World Cup, they started horribly by losing to South Africa, Pakistan and Australia in their first three games. Their campaign saw some light in the next two games with wins over Netherlands and defending champions England, who itself are having a horrific tournament.

In the next match, Sri Lanka were beaten by Afghanistan and then they faced India who rekindled the forgetful memories of the Asia Cup 2023 final quite vividly in Mumbai.

Chasing 358, Sri Lanka's chances were put to rest in the first two overs itself with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj taking three wickets. Mohammed Shami then took a five-for as Sri Lanka got all out for a mere 55.

The loss and subsequent exit from the World Cup prompted harsh comments from the sport ministry which usually is on good terms with the board. As per the ICC rules, the government can't have direct involvement in the matters of cricket board, which has been a bone of contention between the sports ministry and SLC for some time.

ODI World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka Cricket secretary resigns after criticism over team's dismal show

After chalking out a historic win against in-form South Africa, the Netherlands will take the field once again to play their brand of 'total cricket' as espoused by captain Scott Edwards. Squaring up against 1996 World Cup winners Sri Lanka at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday (Oct 21), the outcome of the match could effectively decide the future of either of the two sides in the tournament.

While the Netherlands have bagged a win and are on the ascendency, Sri Lanka are yet to get off the mark, having drawn blank in last three matchups. The last match was a drag for the islanders as they downed the tools and surrendered rather tamely in front of an under-firing Australian squad.

If one regards the previous encounter as an aberration, the Sri Lankan team has managed to etch a 320+ total every time they have taken the field, which should be the silver outline that they should take into this contest. The bowlers, however, have been off the boil, partly due to the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmatha Chameera - the two linchpins of the Sri Lankan bowling lineup.

As for the Dutch side, their focus will be to replicate the minute planning which proved to be the foundation, upon which the win against Proteas was scripted. Edwards, a sharp mind on the field will look for the matchups and use them effectively to come out on top.

Result prediction:

With the margins blurred in a contest like this, the final outcome would lay on which team plays the crunch moments better. Going by the form, it looks like the Dutch have the upper hand as both batting and bowling have come good for them this tournament.

What the teams said:

Dutch player Teja Nidamanuru, speaking on the eve of the contest, said it wouldn't be an upset if the Netherlands beat Sri Lanka.

"I don't know if I'd call it an upset if I'm really honest with you. We've competed against Sri Lanka multiple times in the qualifiers, and obviously, we fell short in our batting side, and we've worked extremely hard on that, whether that's camps in Alor and Bangalore, previous to the tournament or back in the Netherlands. So, we're here to play well and win," said Nidamanuru.

Predicted Playing XIs:

Netherland: Vikramjit Singh, Max O'Dowd, Colin Ackermann, Bas de Leede, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Teja Nidamanuru, Scott Edwards (c & wk), Logan van Beek, Roelof van der Merwe, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis (c), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dunith Wellalage, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara/Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka

World Cup 2023, Netherlands take on Sri Lanka in Lucknow - Preview and result prediction

A couple of weeks after being cleared of sexual assault charges, Sri Lanka Cricketer (SLC) on Tuesday announced it had lifted the ban on cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka, making him eligible for national selection again.

According to the media release by SLC, Gunathilaka was cleared by an independent inquiry committee after a thorough investigation.

"After careful evaluation of Mr. Gunathilaka's exoneration and with due consideration to his cricketing career and its impact on the cricketing ambitions of the nation, the Inquiry Panel, headed by Retired High Court Judge, Sisira Ratnayake, Mr. Niroshana Perera, Attorney at Law and Mr. Asela Rekawa Attorney at Law, unanimously recommended an immediate lifting of his cricketing ban, allowing him to resume regular cricket activities and return to national duty.”

What happened with Gunathilaka?

It was in November last year during the T20 World Cup that Gunathilaka was arrested on rape charges in Sydney when a woman he met through a dating app levelled the allegations.

Gunathilaka was originally part of Sri Lanka's squad for the T20 World Cup but was ruled out of the tournament during the first round after suffering a hamstring injury. However, he stayed with the team in Australia while undergoing his recovery when the allegations first surfaced.

According to reports, the woman alleged that Gunathilaka slapped the woman on the buttocks, forcefully kissed her, bruising her lips in the process and choked her during sex.

After the incident was reported to the Sydney Police, Gunathilaka was investigated for four charges, including stealthing. He was arrested at the Hyatt Regency hours before the Sri Lankan cricket team was due to fly out of Australia

During the trial period, Gunathilaka was unable to travel outside Australia and he was also frozen out by the national team. This also resulted in him missing out on the ODI World Cup berth in India.

However, last month, a court in Sydney acquitted him of the charges with Judge Sarah Huggett noting that the woman was motivated by a desire to paint the cricketer in an unfavourable light

"The evidence establishes that there was no opportunity for the accused to remove the condom during intercourse because that intercourse was continuous," said Huggett.

"I find that the evidence regarding the complaint far from supports the complainant. Rather it undermines the reliability of her evidence," she added.

Spectators gathered at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow to watch the Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup match were forced to scurry around the stands to secure a safe place after hoardings attached to the roof were uprooted and fell down after a dust storm swept across the area. The incident transpired in the 43rd over of the Sri Lankan innings when the Australian bowlers were quietly applying the chokehold. Images and videos of the incident showed the fans running from the spot as the hoardings were swept away by the powerful wind. The match had to be momentarily paused by the umpires as the players found it difficult to play in the conditions. The low turnout at the stadium, in fact, turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the fans were able to quickly move away from the impact spot. The stadium camera also showed Australian players Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell looking at the incident from afar with shock. Fortunately, none of the spectators were injured. India women, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, won the gold in Asian Games cricket, beating Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final. Batting first, India women scored 116/7 on a slow and turning pitch but Titas Sadhu's three wickets for six runs in four overs helped them defend the target.

India's start was a modest one after winning the toss with Shafali Varma getting out cheaply in the fourth over for a team total of 16 runs. Smriti Mandhana (46) Jemimah Rodrigues (42) added 73 runs for the second wicket to put India's innings on track on a difficult pitch. After Mandhana's fall in the 15th over, Indian innings lost a bit of steam as they lost quick wickets with four in last four overs.

The Women in Blue finally managed 116/7 in their 20 overs as no other batter apart from Mandhana and Rodrigues could score in double figures. For Sri Lanka, Udeshika Prabodhani, Sugandika Kumari and Inoka Ranaweera took two wickets each.

Chasing 117, Sri Lanka scored 12 off the first over but they met Titas Sadhu in the third over who bowled a double-wicket maiden to dent their chase. Sadhu took one more wicket in her next over and gave away just one run. Hasini Perera and Nilakshi de Silva then tried to stable the innings with a 36-run partnership but Pooja Vastrakar got Perera out.

Oshadi Ranasinghe then held one hand as she and de Silva wiped off another 28 runs of the target as Sri Lanka needed 38 runs off last four overs. Indian bowlers then kept the pressure on and took three more wickets to leave Sri Lankan chase in tatters.

The Island nation could only manage 97 runs in the end for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs as India won the game and the gold.

Asian Games: India women clinch cricket gold, beat SL by 19 runs in final

Former Pakistan bowler Shoaib Akhtar has termed India's loss to Bangladesh in Asia Cup dead-rubber game as 'embarrassing' and said it is a 'relief' for him and Pakistan fans. Akhtar's comments came as India gear up for the final of regional tournament against Sri Lanka. Notably, Sri Lanka reached the final after beating Pakistan in a virtual semi-final and Men in Green were criticised heavily for the loss.

"India have lost the game. Embarrassing loss. We can't criticise too much. Bangladesh are here to play. People were criticising Pakistan, saying that they got beaten up. Sri Lanka are a good team, not an average team. The same is the case with Bangladesh. They are all playing international cricket. Finally, some relief for the Pakistan fans, including me, that India have lost the game," Akhtar said on his YouTube channel.

Akhtar also termed the loss against Bangladesh as a wake up call for India, who had rested its top players including Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, ahead of the final.

"What a wake-up call for India before the final. You can't take teams lightly after winning a few games. No disrespect to them but Bangladesh made a statement that they are here to prove a point," Akhtar added.

Talking about the chances of India and Pakistan at the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, Akhtar said that Asia Cup results have shown 'this is anybody's game.'

"We are saying that Pakistan and India are favourites at World Cup. These two, along with Australia and England, will reach the semis. This is not the case. Keep your predictions to yourself. A strong team like India has lost to Bangladesh. Shubman Gill's century was also of no use. Small teams will trouble. This is anybody's game. Shubman Gill's ton went in vain. Now it's anybody's game in World Cup," he said.

India, after playing the Asia Cup final on September 17, will face Australia in a three-match ODI series before the World Cup which starts next month on October 5.

Former Sri Lanka international Sachithra Senanayake has been arrested by Lankan police on Wednesday, September 6 for charges pertaining to match-fixing. The off-spinner, as per the police, will be produced in court in the next 24 hours.

The 38-year-old has been charged with attempt to convince players to fix matches in 2020 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). While Senanayake was himself not part of the edition, and is believed to be outside Sri Lanka, he's alleged to have contacted a few players playing in the tournament for fixing.

Senanayake's attempt is believed to have reached the tournament's anti-corruption officers and he was arrested under Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act. The law itself was introduced in 2019 to curb the malpractices in Sri Lankan cricket.

Under the law, "any person who solicits, entices, persuades, or instructs any person… to influence the result, progress, conduct … of any sport, commits the offence of corruption in sports," and Sennanayake is the first person to have been arrested under it.

The probe into the matter was launched last month and the cricketer was banned from leaving the country.

The right-arm spinner made his debut in 2011-12 season and went on to represent Sri Lanka in one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20Is. He was an important part of Lanka's 2014 T20 World Cup campaign which Sri Lanka had won after beating Indian in the final by six wickets. He took four wickets in six matches with a best of 2/3.

Overall, the offie has 53 wickets to his name in ODIs with a best of 4/13. In T20Is, Senanayake took 25 wickets with a best of 4/46.

He was also embroiled in controversy after being pulled for his action in 2014. He, however, made a comeback with a remodeled action but his career went downhill afterwards.

Sachithra Senanayake, former Sri Lanka off-spinner, arrested on match-fixing charges

Afghanistan suffered a heartbreak in Asia Cup 2023 as they failed to qualify for the Super Four stage after losing to Sri Lanka by the narrowest of margins. It was, however, Afghanistan team dugout and somewhat officials' mistake that the Asian minnows couldn't qualify for the next stage.

Chasing 292, the Afghans needed to score those runs in 37.1 overs to beat Sri Lanka on net run rate. Sri Lanka, however, rocked Afghanistan early as they brought them three down for 50 runs. Rahmat Shah (45), skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (59) and Mohammad Nabi (65 off 32) then brought Afghans back in the game.

The match was poised perfectly with Afghans needing 16 runs off the next 10 balls, but Kasun Rajitha sent Najibullah Zadran back on the fourth ball of the 36th over to tilt the game in Lankan's favour. Rashid Khan (27 not out off 16) then kept his team in the game with 12 runs off the next over's last three balls.

With three runs needed on the first ball of the 38th over, Mujeeb holed out and Rashid sank to his knees, thinking the game was over, but only it wasn't. Afghanistan still had a chance to win and qualify by reaching 293 after 37.2 overs, 294 after 37.3, 295 after 37.5, 296 after 38 overs, or 297 after 38.1.

The last batsman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, seemed to have no knowledge of this just like Rashid Khan. Farooqui blocked the first ball he faced - a juicy full-toss, he defended the next one before getting out on the fourth ball of the 38th over as Afghanistan lost by two runs.

Speaking on the situation after the match, Afghan coach Jonathan Trott admitted that they didn't have the knowledge of those equations.

"We were never communicated those calculations," he said. "All we were communicated was we needed to win in 37.1 overs. We weren't told what the overs in which we could get 295 or 297. [That we could win in] 38.1 overs was never communicated to us."

Nonetheless, Afghanistan will rue this rare chance as they miss out on the Super Four berth but they can take pride in putting up a show for their fans in the stadium and fans back home.

Asia Cup: 'We weren't told...,' Afghanistan coach rues NO INFORMATION about calculations after Sri Lanka loss

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is mulling over shifting the venue of the Super Four matches of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 from Colombo to Hambantota to reduce the impact of rain. The wet weather in Pallekele hampered the blockbuster India vs Pakistan match in the group stage and affected India vs Nepal as well. While Colombo is scheduled to host the Super Four matches, the rain in the last few days has cast a shadow on the games.

A Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) official, however, while speaking to ESPNCricinfo on Monday, September 4 said that logistics is the only issue in shifting games from Colombo to Hambantota. The venue, which receives the least rainfall in September in the island nation, has already been signed off as the venue, ESPNCricinfo reported further, citing PCB sources.

Hambantota is on the southern coast of Sri Lanka near a jungle and the quality hotels are at least a 45-minute drive away. The SLC officials prefer to keep the games in Colombo but want Hambantota as the venue instead of Dambulla if the relocation happens. The reason given by the SLC officials to select Hambantota is the lack of floodlights in Dambulla.

The Super Four games are scheduled in Colombo on September 9, 10, 12, 14, and 15, with the final set to be played on September 17. There are six Super Four games to be played and one of them is to be played in Lahore on September 6 - the last match scheduled in Pakistan.

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi, meanwhile, called out ACC for selecting Sri Lanka as co-host of the regional tournament after the India vs Pakistan match failed to produce a result due to rain on September 2. Notably, Pakistan were the original host of the tournament but an objection by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over playing there led to Sri Lanka being added as co-hosts of the tournament.

Also Read: 'Here to watch Asia Cup matches....': BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla in Lahore Hambantota is on the southern coast of Sri Lanka near a jungle and the quality hotels are at least a 45-minute drive away. Asia Cup: Hambantota might replace Colombo as venue for Super Four games amid rain threat

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has suspended all domestic tournaments run by the board it announced on Friday, September 1. This comes after a dispute over restructuring of the tournaments. SLC had recently made some changes to the board-run domestic tournaments for which it needs Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe's nod which hasn't come yet.

"Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to immediately halt all board-conducted domestic tournaments," read a media statement released by SLC. "This includes the ongoing Major Club 3-Day Tournament and also the Invitational Club Tier 'B' 3-Day Tournament."

Notably, SLC had revamped its domestic tournament structure in 2022 following a recommendation by now-defunct Technical Advisory Committee led by former skipper Arvinda de Silva. The committee had suggested to do away with the two-tier structure and get in two group of 13 teams each, playing three-day matches over a course of a season.

In the first two seasons, last two teams from each group would be relegated, followed by further three in the third year, leaving 15 teams in top tier domestic tournament. The relegated teams then would compete in a limited-overs tournament, called Governor's Cup.

The SLC, however, got back to the old system after 2022 season with several relegated teams complaining about the quality of cricket. The move to go back to the old system was also contested as any change in the SLC domestic tournament requires approval of the sports minister as the SLC constitution has to be changed for going back to the older format. The complaint was made by Gesto Sports Club about SLC deciding to go back to the older format for domestic tournament.

"Accordingly, Sri Lanka Cricket is compelled to suspend all SLC-organised domestic cricket tournaments until clarification is obtained on the same," said the media release. For the time being, it, however, continues to remain unclear whether or when the domestic tournaments will start.

Injury-hit Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka name 15-man squad for Asia Cup

On Monday (August 14), a Sri Lankan court imposed a travel ban on former cricketer Sachithra Senanayake. The former spinner, who retired in 2020, is the first player to be investigated for match-fixing under a new anti-corruption law. As a result of the ban, the 38-year-old spinner's passport was confiscated after state lawyers asked for more time to investigate a questionable incident involving him during the 2020 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

"The travel ban will be in place till October 16, when the case is due to be taken up before the Colombo magistrate," a court official told reporters in Colombo.

Senanayake's last international game was against Australia in a T20I in September 2016 at home. He is accused of dragging two LPL players into match-fixing in 2020. While he retired from all forms of the game in early that year, investigations into his conduct continued.

Senanayake is the first player to be prosecuted under a 2019 sports law that recognises match-fixing as a criminal offence. If a player is found guilty, he or she can be convicted for a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine not surpassing 100 million rupees ($317,000), or both.

Senanayake has publicly maintained his innocence.

Several high-profile Sri Lanka cricketers have been under the scanner, investigated and even penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) over corruption, but the ex-spinner is the first to be criminally prosecuted.

LPL 2023 kicked off on July 30 and the tournament finale will be held on August 20, in Colombo.

It will soon be followed by the Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly-hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders, who won the 2022 edition (held in T20I format), are gearing up for the continental event, which commences on August 30 in Pakistan.

Sri Lanka will host nine games, out of 13, in the multi-nation tournament. The national side is yet to announce the full squad for the competition.

Pakistan will be using a concussion substitute for the first time in Test in the ongoing second match against Sri Lanka. Pakistan named Mohammad Rizwan as a replacement for Sarfaraz Ahmed who retired hurt a while after being hit in the head.

Sarfaraz, who came to bat four down in the 81st over of the Pakistan innings on day 3, got hit on the very first ball he faced from Asitha Fernando. It was a short delivery to which the batsman charged before ducking and got hit on the helmet. The ball subsequently went for four leg byes.

The batsman played for 21 balls more after that and hit three exquisite boundaries as well. However, after hitting last of his three fours, the wicketkeeper-batsman called for the physio and walked off soon after on 14. Pakistan cricket board also issued a statement, confirming Ahmed's exit from the Test.

As per the ICC rules, a concussion substitute has to be a like-for-like replacement in terms of the primary skill of the player who is being replaced. Sarfaraz's replacement Rizwan will also be allowed to bat in Pakistan's innings as per the rules.

As for the match, Pakistan had scored 563 runs by the end of day three in their first innings and had taken a lead of 397 runs over Sri Lanka. For the visitors, Abdullah Shafiq scored a double ton (201) while Agha Salman was not out on 132 along with Sarfaraz's replacement Rizwan (37).

The match-fixing allegations have once again rocked Sri Lankan cricket. What is interesting is that a member of the Sri Lankan Parliament has alleged that the first test of the series against Pakistan in July had been fixed. The Sri Lankan cricket board has asked the ICC's anti-corruption unit to investigate into these claims.

On Thursday (November 17), Sri Lanka's tainted cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka was granted bail in Sydney, leading to a reversal of an earlier decision in the case of the alleged sexual assault of a woman during his national side's tour of Australia for the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2022 edition. The batter, who has been suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) with immediate effect following the serious charges, appeared in Sydney's Downing Centre court courtesy of a video link from Parklea Correctional Centre, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, where he has remained in custody after being denied a bail early this month.

It is to be noted that Gunathilaka has been charged with four counts of sexual intercourse with a woman, with whom he got in touch via a dating app, without consent in Sydney's eastern suburbs. While he has been granted bail, the 31-year-old has been banned from using any of his existing social media or dating profiles on release. In addition, he will not be able to leave Australia with his passport being surrendered.

After his arrest, Sri Lanka's former captain and consultant coach Mahela Jayawardena reacted to the shocking news. In a report in One Cricket, he said, "The players who go on these tournaments are not school kids, they are professionals and they must take responsibility for their behaviour and the decisions they make."

"As a team, we have limitations in which we should behave and we participated in the tournament fully aware of these boundaries. Unfortunately, these incidents have happened in the last two days. It's really sad that such things had to happen but as I said before we will need to find out what happened, actually, according to the law of that country."

Media release of the SLC:

Immediately after Gunathilaka found himself in deep trouble with the rape charges levied, the SLC released an official statement suspending him from all forms of cricket. The statement read, "The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket decided to suspend national player Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket with immediate effect and will not consider him for any selections after being informed that Mr. Gunathilaka was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a woman in Australia."

Furthermore, Sri Lanka Cricket will take the necessary steps to carry out an inquiry into the alleged offense promptly, and, upon conclusion of the aforementioned court case in Australia, steps will be taken to penalize the said player if found guilty. Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to emphasize that it adopts a “zero tolerance” policy for any such conduct by a player and will provide all the required support to the Australian law enforcement authorities to carry out an impartial inquiry into the incident."

Kusal Mendis scored another half-century as Sri Lanka trounced Ireland by nine wickets in the T20 World Cup at Hobart on Sunday to build confidence ahead of a potentially pivotal Super 12 clash against champions Australia.

Opener Mendis, who blasted 79 in a qualifying win over the Netherlands last week, fired Sri Lanka to victory with an unbeaten 68 as his team crossed Ireland's 128 for eight with 30 balls to spare in the clash of qualifiers at Bellerive Oval. Since a shock first-up loss to Namibia during qualifying, the 2014 champions Sri Lanka have now won three matches in succession.

They loom as a dangerous match-up for Australia in Perth on Tuesday with the hosts reeling from their heavy opening loss to New Zealand in Sydney on Saturday. Ireland won the toss and chose to bat but were restricted by Sri Lanka's parsimonious bowling from the halfway mark despite 45 from number four Harry Tector.

Man-of-the-match Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva (31) ensured there would be no slip-ups for the south Asians as they built a quickfire opening stand of 63 before De Silva was caught behind off the bowling of Gareth Delany.

Charith Asalanka kept up the pace with an unbeaten 31, with Mendis fittingly sealing the win by slogging spinner Simi Singh for six over square leg.

Men's T20 World Cup: Kusal Mendis' 68 not out takes Sri Lanka to 9-wicket win over Ireland

The T20 World Cup (T20 WC) 2022 edition started with a bang. The one-time winners and current Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka lost to Namibia in their opening game of the qualifying round whereas two-time champions West Indies went down to Scotland, by 42 runs, in their tournament opener. West Indies defeated Zimbabwe by 31 runs on Wednesday (October 19) to spice things up in Group B, the Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders also got off the mark in the showpiece event, in Australia, with a win over UAE a day before.

Sri Lanka might have opened their account in the mega event, however, they still have lots to do in order to progress into the Super 12 round. They face Netherlands, who beat Namibia and the UAE, in their last encounter and it is a do-or-die game for the 2014 champions. Ahead of their crucial tie, here's how SL can make it to the next round of the competition.

EXPLAINED: How Sri Lanka can enter Super 12 round

At present, Sri Lanka occupy the third position in Group A, with a one and a loss and an NRR of +0.600. A win will see them go achieve four points and will better either Netherlands or Namibia, on run rate or points basis. The margin of error is very less for Shanaka & Co. as a defeat will all but end their journey in the eighth edition of the T20 WC.

Given how rain has already played spoilsport in the ongoing edition, if weather god does not permit a game, then SL could face elimination incase of Namibia's win over UAE in the remaining Group A clash. In case both the matches are abandoned due to rain, the Lankans will be on their way back home due to a poor NRR than Namibia and having lesser points than current table-toppers Netherlands.

On the other hand, Namibia will go through with a win over UAE irrespective of the outcome in the SL-Netherlands' face-off. If both Sri Lanka and Namibia win, it will see all the three teams such as Netherlands, Namibia and the Lankans on four points each. In such a scenario, the latter two will proceed ahead. The Dutch side will suffer due to their narrow wins so far in the competition.

Facing UAE, on Tuesday, Patham Nissanka's 74 and three-fers each from Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera starred in SL's 79-run win over UAE. Being asked to bat first, the one-time winners posted 152-8 before dismissing the opposition for a paltry 73 all-out in 17.1 overs.

At the post-match presentation, Shanaka said, "They (crowd) are following us everywhere we go. I'd like to thank them. Really disappointed with the way we ended the innings (with the bat). We could have scored 180-190. The tone was set upfront, but Bhanu (Bhanuka Rajapaksa) and I didn't click. It was important to tick with a win, we focused on a win only. He (Pathum Nissanka ) is outstanding, his focus is to bat through the innings. I'm happy for him. (When asked about Chameera's injury) Hopefully everything will be fine."

Sri Lanka is grappling with its worst economic crisis and people are protesting in different cities including capital Colombo against the government's policies.

"True leaders own up to mistakes. There is massive urgency here to protect the people of our country united in their suffering. These problems are man-made and can be fixed by the right, qualified people. Certain people controlling the economy of this country have lost the people's confidence and must stand down. We then need a good team to give the country confidence and belief. There is no time to waste. It is time to be humble, not make excuses and to do the right thing. #PeoplePower," he wrote on Twitter.
