Batsman Dinesh Chandimal has been installed as Sri Lanka captain across all three formats after Angelo Mathews lost his role as skipper of the country's limited-overs teams following their exit from the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

The 31-year-old Mathews was renamed as Sri Lanka's limited-overs skipper in January, six months after the all-rounder relinquished the captaincy for both red and white-ball formats following a home series defeat to Zimbabwe.

Mathews, however, was unable to revive the team's fortunes in his latest stint, which came to an unceremonious end after Sri Lanka crashed out of the ongoing six-nation Asia Cup following first-round defeats by Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

"The National Selectors on Sunday decided to appoint Dinesh Chandimal as the ODI captain to lead the team in the upcoming England series," Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement.

"Accordingly, they have requested Angelo Mathews to relinquish his duties as the National ODI & T20I captain, with immediate effect."

The decision has upset Mathews, who felt he had been made a "scapegoat" and offered to retire from limited-overs cricket, according to ESPNCricinfo http://www.espncricinfo.com, which published the all-rounder's letter to SLC chief executive Ashley de Silva.

"I'm willing to take part of the blame but, at the same time, feel betrayed and let down if the blame is solely put on me," Mathews wrote.

"If the selectors and coach are of the view that I am unfit to play ODI and T20 cricket and thus not entitled for my place in the team, I would also consider retiring from the ODI and T20 formats as I never want to be a burden to the team."

Sri Lanka have been grappling with a leadership crisis over the last 18 months, during which Upul Tharanga, Lasith Malinga, Chamara Kapugedera and Thisara Perera have also been tried as ODI captains.

From Oct. 10, Sri Lanka will host England for five one-day internationals, a one-off Twenty20 and three tests.

Chandimal to lead all Sri Lanka sides after Asia Cup flop

Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga on Wednesday was asked to leave the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) and return home immediately. &nbsp

The Sri Lanka Cricket ordered Malinga to play domestic cricket or forget being recalled for the national side.

The pacer was not retained by Mumbai during IPL 2018 auctions.

Hence, he was up for selection in country's domestic Inter-Provincial one-day tournament, which is set to begin on May 2.&nbsp

However, the pacer stated that he would not be returning to the island until the end of the IPL 2018.

After going unsold at the IPL 2018 auction, Malinga, who hasn’t played for Sri Lanka since last September, opted for a stint as a mentor for MI.&nbsp

“The selectors wanted him back, and he has to play domestic cricket according to them. We’re playing our white-ball tournament, and 50-over and T20,"SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala said.&nbsp

"I’m sure before the next international engagement which is South Africa and then the Asia Cup and so forth, he needs to play T20 games and 50 overs. If Lasith is not playing a domestic tournament, the selectors will have to make a call,” he added.&nbsp

Meanwhile, SLC CEO Ashley de Silva said, “We have informed Lasith that he has been selected. If he doesn’t play the Inter-Provincial tournament, it is unlikely that the selectors will consider him.”

South Africa will play five ODIs and a T20 International during their Sri Lanka tour that kicks off with the two-match Test series.

IPL 2018: Lasith Malinga given ultimatum to leave IPL and return home

Sri Lanka's cricket board has approved a tour to Pakistan, eight years after a deadly militant attack against the team brought top international games there to a standstill, officials said Monday.

Sri Lanka Cricket chief Thilanga Sumathipala said after a security assessment, the team had been cleared to play three Twenty20 internationals including "at least one" in Lahore, the scene of the 2009 attack which left eight people dead.

Any tour would require government approval before the team is sent abroad.

Leading cricket nations have shunned playing in Pakistan since the 2009 assault, in which gunmen ambushed the Sri Lankan team bus en route to the Lahore stadium, wounding at least seven players.

"We have had our security experts visit and make an assessment, and things look positive with things improving all over the country and especially Lahore being cleared," Sumathipala was quoted as saying in a statement.

"We have three T20 games coming up against Pakistan in September and we would like to play at least one of those games in Lahore," he added.

Pakistani cricket officials welcomed the decision, lauding the move on social media.

"Thank you Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala. We look forward to hosting you and the Sri Lankan team," the Pakistan Cricket Board wrote on Twitter.

Since 2009, the only international team to visit Pakistan is Zimbabwe, who played five limited-overs games in Lahore in 2015. Pakistan play their "home" internationals in the United Arab Emirates.

But there were hopeful signs when Pakistan successfully staged the final of the Pakistan Super League -- the rest of which was played in UAE -- under heavy security in March.

Addressing the Asian Cricket Council in Colombo at the weekend, Sumathipala called for an end to Pakistan's isolation and urged countries to play there.

He recalled that several Test nations did not want to visit Sri Lanka at the height of the Tamil separatist conflict, when bombs were exploding in the capital in the mid-1990s.

"Sri Lanka suffered through three decades of terrorism and war and at one stage no one wanted to come here -- Pakistan stood by us then, as did India," Sumathipala said.

Sri Lanka ended its long-running ethnic war in May 2009 when the top Tamil rebel leadership was wiped out in a military offensive that sparked allegations that 40,000 Tamil civilians were killed by troops.

The Sri Lankan board statement also quoted Pakistan Cricket Board chief Najam Sethi saying they had set up state-of-the-art security and surveillance to make their cities safe.

Cricket: Sri Lanka board clears first Pakistan tour since 2009 attack

India must tighten up their fielding and be "ruthless" when they face Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy at the Oval on Thursday, skipper Virat Kohli said.

The defending champions opened their Group B account with an emphatic 124-run victory over arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday, but drew criticism for their lacklustre fielding performance.

"Sometimes, starting with the tournament, creating momentum as a team, you can misfield, you can get overexcited," Kohli told a news conference on Wednesday.

"There can be lapses as well, especially when the team is seven or eight down and you know that the game is going to end soon. We have addressed the guys and have asked them to be ruthless and finish games off."

Kohli also told his teammates not to get carried away by the praise that has come their way since they beat Pakistan. Despite the occasional fielding error, India dominated the rain-shortened match.

"I don't think when you are playing good cricket, you should look too much into the praise factor," he added.

"As a team, we really don't focus on these things and we try to maintain the same kind of intensity and momentum regardless of how we are playing.

"At this moment we are playing some good cricket but that doesn't mean that we play with arrogance... In this sport, anyone can upset anyone on their given day... you certainly cannot even think of taking anyone lightly."

Both India and South Africa have two points apiece having won their opening encounters, but India top the group thanks to their superior run rate.

Virat Kohli: India must be ruthless in finishing games off

England test captain and skipper, Alastair Cook, believes his batsmen are well-prepared to deal with Pakistan's fiery attack next month after getting plenty of practice in the middle against a weakened Sri Lanka side.

England crushed Sri Lanka 2-0 in the three-test home series that concluded on Monday, facing little resistance from a team shorn of frontline pacemen Dushmantha Chameera and Dhammika Prasad through injury at different stages during the tour.

However, Cook's side can expect a far bigger challenge from a formidable Pakistani pace attack spearheaded by left-armers Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz, supplemented by tricky leg-spinner Yasir Shah.

"They've got a very good pace attack, backed up with spinners," Cook said after the rain-hit final test against Sri Lanka ended in a tame draw at Lord's.

"But we're ready for them. We scored a lot of runs against Australia's attack here last year. I think it's going to be a brilliant series."

Amir will be returning to test cricket after serving a five-year ban following a spot-fixing scandal in England, while the four-test series will be Shah's first since he served a three-month suspension for a doping violation.

Cook will also be delighted to have finally found a stable opening partner in Alex Hales, who finished the series against Sri Lanka as the second highest scorer on 292 runs from five innings.

His performance marked a significant improvement by the 27-year-old Hales, who averaged just 17 in his debut test series in South Africa earlier this year as he struggled to make the transition from limited-overs cricket.

"Three scores of 80 and above from Alex Hales was really pleasing," Cook said of his eighth opening partner since Andrew Strauss retired in 2012.

"He's certainly tightened up his game from South Africa and probably just learned about test cricket."

It was a satisfying series for Jonny Bairstow too, the English wicketkeeper-batsman emerging as the top-scorer and walking away with the man-of-the-series award.

Cook hailed Bairstow's batting prowess but admitted the 26-year-old had room for improvement behind the stumps.

"It's great to have an attacking batsman coming in and taking it to the opposition. He's been very similar to Matt Prior when he was at his best."

"He knows how hard he has to work at his keeping... He knows a couple of chances have gone down, but you don't become a world-class wicketkeeper overnight.

"He's made big strides since that South Africa series and is certainly heading in the right direction."

Pakistan will play four tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20 International in England between July 14 and September 7.
