Shreyas Iyer who played a pivotal role in taking India's total to 252 in the first innings of the second Test revealed how much the half-century on Day 1 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium against Sri Lanka meant to him.

Iyer scored 92 off 98 balls hitting 10 fours and four sixes on Saturday.

"I personally felt that fifty was like a century. That's why I celebrated like that. It was like a century feeling for me," Shreyas Iyer said in the press conference after the end of the day's play.

"You saw the players who defended the ball, there was a lot of chance of nicking, and there was variable bounce on that wicket. You can't just play very negatively on that wicket and just keep defending the ball. You've got to have that positive intent when you step out on the field. The wicket is not that great. It`s obviously bowler-friendly," he added.

Iyer further pointed out that he has no regrets after missing on Test ton, saying: "It is disappointing to miss out on a hundred, but by the end of it the team had got to a fighting total. So, I have no regrets. I play for the team."

Felt like a century, says Shreyas Iyer on raising his bat after half-century in pink-ball Test vs Sri Lanka

Injury-hit Sri Lanka will need nothing less than a miracle to deny hosts India a 2-0 sweep in the test series when the two sides meet in the second and final test in Bengaluru, which will be played under the lights from Saturday.

India have not lost a series at home in the longest format since their 2-1 defeat by England in 2012 and won their 14th consecutive series at home when they beat inaugural World Test Champions New Zealand at the end of last year.

Led by new test captain Rohit Sharma, the side blanked Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs inside three days in the opening match against Mohali.

Sharma's side will be firm favourites to extend their unbeaten streak, having never lost a test match to Sri Lanka at home and their last defeat against the southern neighbours coming way back in 2015 in the longest format.

To make matters worse for the touring side, Pathum Nissanka, who scored an unbeaten 61 in the first innings at Mohali, has been ruled out of the pink-ball test with a back injury.

Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, who missed the first match with an injury, was also unavailable, while fellow paceman Lahiru Kumara injured his hamstring on the opening day at Mohali.

"Injuries have been a huge concern for us," Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne told reporters on Friday.

"We have few bowlers and to win a test we need 20 wickets. So it's very hard to win against a team like India."

The hosts, in contrast, have welcomed back fit-again Axar Patel for the Bengaluru test and the left-arm spinner is expected to replace Jayant Yadav in the side if India decide to continue with three tweakers.

It will be the third day-night test in India and the hosts have won both their previous pink-ball contests - against England and Bangladesh.

India vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah felt playing a test match under lights, with a pink ball, required a lot of mental adjustment.

"We are still very new in this format," the hosts' fast bowling spearhead said, adding that India were yet to decide on their combination for the match.

"As children growing up we've not played a lot with pink ball. We're not used to catching the pink ball, bowling with the pink ball, as batters playing against the pink ball.

India vs Sri Lanka: Ravichandran Ashwin equals Kapil Dev's record of 434 Test wickets

India's bowlers picked up four Sri Lankan wickets after all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's unbeaten 175 helped the hosts post a massive first innings total on the second day of the opening Test at Mohali on Saturday.

The left-handed Jadeja combined in two century stands with Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami on Saturday to put the touring side on the mat as India declared their first innings closed on 574 for eight at the tea interval.

Jadeja added 130 for the seventh wicket with Ashwin, who made 61, and a further 103 for the unbroken ninth with Shami to effectively bat Sri Lanka out of the contest. Shami remained unbeaten on 20.

Jadeja's impact with the ball was also immediate.

The left-arm spinner dismissed Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne leg before wicket for 28 after spin partner Ashwin had given the hosts the first breakthrough by sending back Lahiru Thirimanne in similar fashion.

There were more lbw dismissals for Sri Lanka with former captain Angelo Mathews out to fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and Ashwin picking up his second by dismissing Dhananjaya de Silva.

Sri Lanka ended the day on 108 for four with Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka at the crease, but the tourists face a daunting task to avoid defeat on a track offering turn for the spinners.

Nissanka's stumps were earlier knocked back by Bumrah but the batter survived as the third umpire ruled that the bowler had overstepped the crease during his delivery.

Asalanka also managed to overturn an lbw decision against him on review. Replays showed Jadeja`s delivery would have missed the stumps.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa withdraws from retirement, wants to play for Sri Lanka again

Sri Lanka cricket has been struggling over the last few years as the team continues to go the downward slope in international cricket. Sri Lanka were once regarded as one of the giants of the sport and dominated limited-overs cricket for a significant period of time under Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara's captaincy.

They had become the third Asian team to win the ICC World Cup in 1996 when the Arjun Ranatunga-led side scripted history by beating Australia in the final at Lahore. However, Sri Lanka's cricket has endured a massive decline in the last few years with the country's cricketers often at loggerheads with the board over contracts and payments among others.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has often been in the news for all the wrong reasons of late as the team continues to underperform at major ICC events. From being one of the strongest contenders of the World Cup titles at the start of the past decade to losing their credentials at the highest level, cricket in Sri Lanka needs restructuring.

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Roshan Mahanama, who was part of the 1996 World Cup-winning team, believes cricket has been politicised in Sri Lanka and the game needs to be protected for it to prosper in the future. Regarded as one of the best match referees of all time, Mahanama is part of the advisory committee for the Sri Lankan cricket board.

"In Sri Lanka, it comes under the sports law so, after an extent, you can say that it is being politicised," Mahanama told WION.

"But people can turn around and say, they are the part of the committee right now but reluctantly I got involved purely because we were given promises that they will make certain changes for the betterment of the game and I still feel that there is a lot that needs to be done," he added.

Mahanama spoke on the sidelines of the launch of his new book - 'My Innings - Retired Hurt to the Best View of the Game'. He said the administrators of the game need to come together and work for the betterment of Sri Lankan cricket as the game gives the country global recognition.

"We do not have the authority we are only there to advise the minister and people at the cricket board but the final say lies in the hands of the administrators. I feel everyone needs to work together," said the former Sri Lanka cricketer.

"This is a game that takes Sri Lanka to the world, it creates the image of the country. Countries like South Africa, Australia and New Zealand need to promote the game but in Sri Lanka, we need to protect the game," he added.

He said the administrators of the game need to come together and work for the betterment of Sri Lankan cricket as the game gives the country global recognition. Exclusive! Cricket takes Sri Lanka to the world, the game needs to be protected: Roshan Mahanama

Over the years, Sri Lanka cricket have produced several big names in world cricket. Back when the ODI World Cup was a new concept and saw the dominance of big teams such as West Indies and Australia, Sri Lanka became the third Asian team, second in a row, to lift the 50-over world championship in 1996.

During the 1996 World Cup, the Arjuna Ranatunga-led Islanders weren't regarded as one of the strongest contenders. In fact, they had a tough ride all the way to the final, with teams such as Australia and Windies not agreeing to go to the Island nation for their respective WC fixtures. At that time, teams were reluctant to tour SL due to a massive bomb blast that ripped through the capital Colombo Jan. 31 1996, claiming the lives of at least 80 people and injuring around 1,400.

In addition, SL locked horns with tournament-favourites India in the semi-finals before beating them in a controversial manner prior to their historic triumph over Australia in the summit clash.

Recalling the iconic 1996 WC triumph, former SL great and and ex-ICC match referee Roshan Mahanama told WION in an exclusive interaction -- on the sidelines of the launch of my book “My Innings - Retired Hurt to the Best View of the Game -- "I think I was part of both phases in SL cricket (in transition and when they became a lethal unit). We used to go to work, approach organisations to help us. In mid-90s, the change started. I don't think we got paid quite well until we won the WC. It wasn't about money but it was the passion for the game. In that 1996 WC, we were one of the experienced teams but they never gave us due credit. That helped us to be relaxed as we were not under any pressure. That was the turnaround in SL cricket. The guys who were part of that era contributed immensely in SL getting the Test status."

He added, "You rightly said that it was a close-knit team. Arjuna was the father figure. That doesn't mean we agreed to everything that he said. We gelled well maybe due to our background. We knew one another and had played each other from school days. To build that team spirit was quite easy. Some key learnings was teamwork, we played to our strength and not to the strength of the opposition. Back then, Imran Khan had told us to bat first if we win the toss, however, we backed our strength to chase (in the 1996 finale) and everything is now history. And, the third one is that when somebody was called upon to do something for the team, no one said 'it is not my duty' and raised their hand up. Not only the 14 guys who were selected in the squad, even the support staff played their part."

Mickey Arthur to quit Sri Lanka job, will join Derbyshire as head coach

Sri Lanka have already made their mark in the Twenty20 World Cup with commanding wins in the preliminary round and will go into their Super 12 contest against Bangladesh with a slight edge, the team`s captain Dasun Shanaka said on Saturday.

The island nation, who won the 2014 edition of the tournament, stamped their authority over the game`s minnows in the United Arab Emirates with their versatile bowling attack helping them register big wins in all three matches.

Sri Lanka bundled out their opponents in all of their matches - Namibia for 96, Ireland for 101 and Netherlands for 44 - to breeze into Group One of the Super 12 stage.

"T20 is a very short game, and on our day, everyone saw how good we are," Shanaka told reporters on the eve of Sunday`s match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

"After winning those qualifiers, they have the momentum. It`s good for them, but still, we`ve got a better side, I think. We have a slightly better chance," said Shanaka.

There was doubt over the availability of Sri Lanka off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana, who took eight wickets in three matches but left the field against the Dutch with a side strain after picking up two wickets in one over.

Bangladesh are known to be very passionate about the sport and the players faced lot of criticism back home after their defeat against Scotland.

The team's coach Russell Domingo said they had spoken "long and hard" about it and the players are firmly focussed on their cricket and not the criticism.

"I think we`ve got a well-balanced side. We`ve got some seriously skilful bowlers and some dangerous batters," Domingo said.

"I think we`ve got a well-balanced side. We`ve got some seriously skilful bowlers and some dangerous batters," Domingo said. "Obviously these type of conditions can suit us. "Sharjah, I suppose, is a little bit more similar to what wickets in Dhaka are like. Hopefully that can assist us in tomorrow`s game."

Former Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene, who was appointed as the national team's batting consultant, has opened up on the struggles of bio bubble and quarantine and confirmed that he will return home ahead of the Super 12 stage, of ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which is underway in UAE and Oman. "It's tough. I just counted that I have been 135 days in quarantine and bubbles since June and I am in (the) last legs. But I totally understand and I told them I will be with the group with the technology that we have," said Jayawardene as quoted by Sportskeeda.

Already qualified for the Super 12s, Sri Lanka thrashed Netherlands by eight wickets in their final T20 World Cup first round match with the spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana bamboozling the opposition batters here on Friday.

The inconsequential match ended inside two hours, as Sri Lanka first bundled out the opposition for a paltry 44, the sixth lowest total in T20 history, and then cantered to the target in just 7.1 overs.

The chase was a walk in the park, as opener Kusal Perera, blazed his way to an unbeaten 33 off 24 balls, as he tore apart the Netherlands attack.

It was Sri Lanka's third win in as many matches and they topped Group A with six points. They now take on Bangladesh at the same venue on Sunday in their first Super 12 match.

The day surely belonged to the young Sri Lankan spinners, Hasaranga (3/9) and Theekshana (2/3), who spun their web around the Netherlands to bowl them out in 10 overs.

The 44-run total by Netherlands was the second lowest in T20 World Cup history.

Put in to bat, Netherlands lost in-form opener Max O'Dowd (2) cheaply, as he was run-out in the first over, courtesy a direct hit by rival skipper Dasun Shanaka.

It soon became 19/2 as young off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana used the carrom ball to perfection, as he cleaned up Ben Cooper (9).

Theekshana was on a roll, as he picked up his second wicket in the same over, again using the carrom ball to castle Stephan Myburgh (5). Netherlands was teetering at 20/3 at that stage.

Sri Lanka were surging as leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (3/9) scalped two wickets in the fifth over.

First, he trapped Colin Ackermann (11) in the front, as the Dutch were in all sorts of trouble at 31/4.

Hasaranga, in a similar fashion, removed Bas De Leede (0) as Netherlands lost half their side for 32.

It was a procession for Netherlands batters as Roelof van der Merve (0) and skipper Pieter Seelaar (2) also went cheaply.

The rival skipper was again trapped in the front by Hasaranga, who produced a stellar show on a track which aided the spinners.

Right-arm pacer Lahiru Kumara (3/7) then sent the lower order packing, claiming three wickets in the 10th over, as misery continued for Netherlands, who were bowled out in just 60 balls.

While chasing, Sri Lanka lost opener Pathum Nissanka (0) in the second over, but Perera saw the team home without much fuss, as he took the Netherlands attack to cleaners, hammering six fours in the process.

Charith Asalanka, who replaced Dinesh Chandimal, could not make most of the opportunity, as he departed for six. But eventually left-handed Perera took the team home in company of Avishka Fernando (2 not out).

Former Pakistani cricketer Salman Butt has criticised Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson and called him "lazy". After India's tour of Sri Lanka, Samson has been facing flak for a below-average show in Colombo.

Samson was expected to contribute with the bat as India travelled with some lesser-experienced players, but he managed to score only 34 runs in three T20Is against Sri Lanka. He also made some fielding errors and his judgement of DRS was also criticised. After making his debut in 2014, Samson has only managed 117 runs in 10 T20Is he has played so far.

In his YouTube channel, Butt said, "Sanju Samson seems like a lazy batsman to me. When you know you are not able to pick a bowler (Wanindu Hasaranga), you should keep your pad ahead of the bat and play him out. But still, he was trying to play the ball on the back foot, and that too across the line. So, what happened what that Samson completely missed the ball and was trapped in front."

He further added, "It looked like he had a very casual approach. When you know that there are only five batsmen in the team and you are one of them, and two have already got out, you should have been more careful. But I did not see that effort from Samson."

Twenty-four hours before Sri Lanka start a one-day series against India on Sunday, the beleaguered home side still did not know who their wicketkeeper would be, new captain Dasun Shanaka said.

The Sri Lankan board has been marred with many crises like financial, player contracts, and bio-bubble breaches. However, the series against India will help the board financially.

Shami Silva, the president of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), has revealed that the cricket board will earn around $12 million for hosting Team India for six matches (three ODIs, and three T20Is). In terms of Indian rupees, the amount converts into a whopping 89.9 crore INR.

"We had initially finalised to host three matches. But after some negotiations with the Indian Cricket Board, we managed to increase the matches to six which will enable us to raise an additional $6 million in revenue. SLC will be able to provide a large income to the country with Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa’s vision of building a strong economy through Sports," Silva told dailynews.lk.

Silva went on to add that the cricket board missed out on several scheduled tours due to COVID-19, however, ensured that no player's salary was affected by it.

"We missed out on several tours as scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet we did not reduce the monthly salaries and allowances of our cricketers. None of their facilities were deducted either. In the face of this situation, the cricketers should give out their best display to the country," Silva pointed out.

The 3-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka will kick off on July 13.

Revealed: This is the whopping amount Sri Lankan cricket board will get from India series

Sri Lanka's World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga's 'second-string Indian team' remarks stirred a major controversy ahead of the India vs Sri Lanka limited-overs series.

"This is a second-string Indian team and their coming here is an insult on our cricket. I blame the current administration for agreeing to play with them due to television marketing needs," Ranatunga, had told reporters at his residence, according to news agency PTI.

Several former cricketers reacted to these remarks and criticised Ranatunga for these statements. Now, former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has responded to Ranatunga's comments and said that he did not expect such a remark from him.

"First of all, Mr. Ranatunga. You have made this statement to remain in limelight. Because only India is a team right now who have a pool of 50-60 players, strong enough to field two different sides. And even in this team, players such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya keep representing India consistently," Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

"So I just want to say that I feel sorry to hear this coming from you. You're such a big name and yet, you made such a statement to and then fell flat on your face with Sri Lanka Cricket responding to you."

"Sri Lanka cricket is on a decline. It's almost as of they've forgotten how to play cricket. You should be happy that India is sending its team to lift you out of financial crisis. The board will get sponsors, funds and what not," Kaneria explained.

"Don't think such a statement was needed. These things only create friction between boards. I think Ranatunga must have learnt his lesson or when India would hammer Sri Lanka comprehensively, then he'll understand."

'Sri Lanka cricket is on a decline': Danish Kaneria responds to Arjuna Ranatunga's remarks

A controversy erupted when Sri Lanka's top cricketers, including Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews, refused to sign central contracts offered by the country's cricket board citing a lack of transparency in the manner in which categories of the contract have been allocated.

Sri Lankan players issued a joint statement and said that they were “shocked and dismayed” by the SLC’s decision to go public with the specific payment details of players. “These disclosures amount to a grave security concern to each and every player,” they said in the statement.

However, the latest reports have emerged that the Sri Lankan board has given 36 hours to the players for signing the national contract.

According to a report by PTI, SLC sources said the players are returning from the UK on Tuesday and they will be served with a July 8 deadline to sign the contracts. Anyone failing to do so would be excluded from selection for the home series against India starting July 13.

As per these categories, six players come in the highest Category A, where they receive an annual pay ranging between $70,000 and $100,000. In this category, Dhananjaya de Silva will receive the highest pay ($100,000), whereas, other players will receive $70,000-80,000 each.

According to a Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) report, a statement from the attorney representing nearly all the top Sri Lankan players said the remuneration proposed is one-third of what some other cricket-playing countries offer to their players.
