Serena Williams survived another scare to beat older sister Venus 3-6 6-3 6-4 on Thursday in the latest instalment of their reluctant on-court sibling rivalry to reach the quarter-finals of the inaugural Top Seed Open in Lexington, Kentucky.

Serena, who in her first-round match of the spectator-free tournament was five points from defeat against world number 60 Bernarda Pera, had to rally back from a set down and 4-2 final set deficit to prevail in a thrilling battle.

With the win, Serena improved to 19-12 in career head-to-head meetings with Venus.

“It was a very high quality match,” said Serena. “There was a lot of long points, running me around and then at one point it was just big serves and so I thought that was really interesting as we both started serving really well and returning well.”

Top-seeded Serena was locked in early in the final set as she earned a quick break to go ahead 2-1 before Venus grabbed momentum by taking the next three games and moving closer to her first victory over her sister since 2018 at Indian Wells.

But Serena found her way back and eventually used a fierce backhand winner to get to 5-4 before going on to serve out the match on her first match point.

Serena made a fast start to the match and had break point chances for a 3-0 double break lead but Venus stormed back with a five-game win streak and then closed out the opening set with a powerful serve.

In the second set Serena broke Venus with an inside-out backhand winner to pull ahead 4-2 and then closed out the frame with ease to force the decider.

Serena will face either Canadian qualifier Leylah Fernandez or American wildcard Shelby Rogers in next round.

The suspension of tennis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic meant that until this week, Serena had not competed on the tour since February. As a result, the American said rather than focussing on winning the Top Seed Open, she wants to make sure she gets into top form for the Aug. 31-Sept. 13 U.S. Open.

“I’m just here to play another match just to get match tough for New York,” said Serena, who has failed to add to her haul of 23 Grand Slam tiles since January 2017.

“I’ve done absolutely nothing but train and practice and so I am really low on the matches and so this is really helping.”

Sister Act: Serena beats Venus to reach Lexington quarter-final

Pakistan opener Abid Ali scored a half-century but England’s seam bowlers used the muggy conditions to their advantage to restrict the tourists to 126 for five at the close of a rain-hit opening day of the second test at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.

The tourists chose to bat first and were fortunate not to lose more wickets as the bounce, movement off the seam and swing through the air in hot, overcast conditions was perfectly suited to England’s experienced seam attack.

Babar Azam (25 not out) and Mohammad Rizwan (4 not out) will resume on the second morning, seeking to rescue the innings in their bid to rebound from a three-wicket loss in the first test.

Abid (60) was twice dropped at second slip as he rode his luck, before finally being snatched by Rory Burns in that position off the bowling of left-arm seamer Sam Curran, who came into the England side in the place of Jofra Archer.

Burns also caught visiting captain Azhar Ali (20) from the bowling of James Anderson (2-35), who had earlier trapped centurion from the first test, Shan Masood (1), leg before wicket.

The slip-catching practice continued as Asad Shafiq (5) was well taken low down by Dom Sibley off Stuart Broad.

Batsman Fawad Alam (0) had waited almost 11 years since his previous test innings, but lasted only four balls before Chris Woakes made it a return to forget with another lbw decision that was given on review by the television umpire.

Pakistan were saved further loss of wickets with the conditions firmly in favour of the bowlers when the players left the field after more rain with only 45.4 overs bowled in the day.

This time it was for good as lightening lit up the gloomy evening sky.

England had earlier recalled batsman Zac Crawley for all-rounder Ben Stokes, who has withdrawn from the remainder of the three-match series for personal reasons.

England on top despite Abid Ali half century for Pakistan

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick stayed neutral in the debate whether his striker Robert Lewandowski is better than Barcelona star Lionel Messi ahead of Friday's Champions League quarter-final clash in Lisbon

Barca face Bayern at the Estadio da Luz for a place in next Wednesday's semi-final.

In the build-up, there has been much debate whether Lewandowski, the Champions League's top-scorer with 13 goals in seven games, or six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi is the better player.&nbsp;

Earlier on Thursday, Barca coach Quique Setien said Lewandowski is "clearly" not at Messi's level after former Bayern star Lothar Matthaeus said the Poland striker had overtaken the Argentina forward as the world's best player.&nbsp;

"You can't compare the two players," insisted Flick.

"Robert is absolutely world-class as a central striker.

"He has a lot of quality, especially in the penalty area, he guarantees goals and creates them too.

"Messi has been by far the best player (in the world) for many years.

"I don't know whether there will be a player like him again."

Lewandowski is enjoying the best season of his career so far with 53 goals in 44 games, while Messi has managed 31 in 43 matches.

However, treble-chasing Bayern need to come up with a plan on how to contain Messi.

"You never defend against him alone. In the (previous Bayern) games against Messi, it always worked well when the whole team played their part," said Bayern forward Thomas Mueller.

"If the first player doesn't win the ball (from Messi), the next comes and tries.

"We have to act together, go into the challenges aggressively, but cleanly.

"It will be exciting, but in our games in the last few weeks, we have shown that we can do it," he added with Bayern unbeaten in their 13 match since the restart.

Flick insists Friday's showdown is not "Bayern against Messi. Of course he's a world-class player and we have thought about how to play against him.

"We have to be there as a team, be smart and put pressure on him."

Bayern are chasing the treble after winning an eighth straight Bundesliga title and lifting the German Cup.

In contrast, Barcelona surrendered the Spanish title to Real Madrid after winning only seven of their 11 matches since the Spanish league resumed.

Nevertheless, Barcelona's former Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal has insisted the Spanish giants are "the best team in the world".

The Germans resisted making a similar boast, but are in confident mood, even if Flick refused to make his team the favourite.

"Both teams have tremendous quality," he said.

"When such top clubs meet, even a bit of luck can be decisive.

"We have to believe in ourselves, act confidently and with the necessary intensity going into this game."

'You can't compare Lewandowski and Messi' - Bayern boss Flick

Leipzig stunned Atletico Madrid 2-1 on Thursday to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time as Tyler Adams' 88th-minute winner earned them a showdown with Paris Saint-Germain.&nbsp;

Atletico looked to have secured extra-time at the Estadio Jose Alvalade when Joao Felix won and then scored a penalty to cancel out Dani Olmo's headed opener early in the second half.&nbsp;

But Adams proved an unlikely hero for Leipzig, coming off the bench to snatch victory in Lisbon after his fired effort took a cruel deflection of Stefan Savic and flew in.&nbsp;

The win marks an historic night for Leipzig, who were only formed 11 years ago and played their first ever season in Germany's top flight in 2016.&nbsp;

Progress to the last four also puts another feather in the cap of their coach Julian Nagelsmann, whose stock will rise even further after ousting Diego Simeone, one of this competition's most gnarly tacticians.&nbsp;

"I'm perhaps one of the happiest coaches in the world," Nagelsmann said.&nbsp;

"We were the better team, the result is totally OK. The second goal is a bit lucky but we found the space behind the defensive line. I think we were the better team today."

Their challenge is now to defeat PSG on Tuesday, the French champions who have only played three matches in almost half a year and needed a late escape to see off Atalanta on Tuesday.&nbsp;

"It's normal that when you get to the next round, you want more," Nagelsmann said.&nbsp;

"Tonight we're happy. Tomorrow we'll start looking at Paris. That will be another difficult game but we'll have a plan."

<h2>- 'Hurts a lot' -</h2>

For Atletico and Simeone, this was an opportunity spurned to go far in Europe at the end of what has been a disappointing season in Spain.&nbsp;

After Real Madrid's loss against Manchester City, only Barcelona are left to fly the Spanish flag in this tournament and they face a formidable challenge against Bayern Munich on Friday.&nbsp;

Questions will be asked again about the future of Simeone, who has struggled to recreate an Atletico side capable of challenging for major honours.&nbsp;

His notoriously defensive approach, which saw off holders Liverpool in the last 16, looked outdated here against the slick, quick and free-flowing style of their opponents.&nbsp;

"It hurts a lot," said Atletico's Saul Niguez. "They had superiority in many areas on the pitch, inside, outside. Many times we were not even close to stopping them."

A forgettable first half was more worrying for Atletico, who struggled to escape their own half, even if Leipzig never really turned their pressure into any chances.&nbsp;

Marcel Halstenberg had the best opening but lashed over on the volley at the back post while the excellent Dayot Upamecano headed straight into the hands of Jan Oblak when given too much space in the box.&nbsp;

In between, VAR took a long time looking at a possible Atletico penalty but the contact between Peter Gulasci and Niguez's heel was minimal and the correct decision was made.&nbsp;

Leipzig were still in the ascendancy after half-time. Sabitzer had been captain until he picked up a knee injury in June and it was his perfect cross that created the opener, Olmo nipping in at the front post and heading past Oblak into the far corner.&nbsp;

Simeone threw on Felix to spark his team into life and the 20-year-old made a difference. He played a neat one-two with Diego Costa before poking the ball away from the lunging Lukas Klostermann. Felix went down and then got up to score the penalty.&nbsp;

Atletico owned the momentum but they let it go as the game drifted towards extra-time. Leipzig sensed an opportunity and in the 88th minute, they struck.&nbsp;

The ball was brilliantly switched left to Angelino, whose pulled cross fooled the retreating Atletico defence and landed at the feet of Adams on the edge of the area.&nbsp;

He had time to size up his shot, the finish spinning up off the left foot of Savic and leaving Oblak helpless.&nbsp;

Valtteri Bottas set the pace ahead of his team-mate and championship leader Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes resumed normal service by topping the times in Friday’s opening Spanish Grand Prix practice.

The Finn clocked a best lap in one minute and 16.785 seconds to outpace the six-time champion by 0.039sec with last Sunday’s race victor Max Verstappen third for Red Bull, nine-tenths adrift of the fastest time.

The Dutchman had beaten both Mercedes men to claim the ninth win of his career in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in sweltering conditions at Silverstone.

But with the temperature hovering at 28 degrees on a perfect summer’s day at the Circuit de Catalunya there were no major heating or tyre issues for the ‘black arrows’ this time out.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel, running in a new chassis, Romain Grosjean of Haas and Sergio Perez of Racing Point.

Mexican Perez was back in action after missing both Silverstone races due to coronavirus.

Alex Albon was eighth in the second Red Bull ahead of Kevin Magnussen in the second Haas and Lance Stroll in the second Racing Point.

The session was run in near-ideal conditions and delivered few incidents apart from complaints by Hamilton about his left-front tyre wearing rapidly and his team-mate’s radio communications reverting to a crackle.

Bottas tops Hamilton as Mercedes return to form

Atletico Madrid were outplayed and out-thought by Leipzig on Thursday in Lisbon and at the end of another deflating season, Diego Simeone faces accusations he is out of date.&nbsp;

In a mirror image of their efforts in La Liga, Atletico delivered in the Champions League when written off and crumbled when there was even a hint of expectation.&nbsp;

They knocked out Liverpool at Anfield when nobody gave them a chance but when good form and a kind draw offered them a clear route to the final, they wilted, a 2-1 defeat sending Leipzig into the semis.&nbsp;

In La Liga, with the top two out of sight and their place in the top four in doubt, Atletico motored through the last five weeks unbeaten to clinch third.&nbsp;

But when held up as title challengers at the start of the season, after spending around 250 million euros and humiliating Real Madrid 7-3 in July, they floundered, winning six of their first 16 matches to sit seventh.

For a long time, Atletico have revelled in their underdog status, pitching themselves as the outsiders gatecrashing Europe's wealthy elite.&nbsp;

In a pitch on Wednesday to English fans on social media about the merits of supporting the club, the first reason given read: "Competing against the La Liga and European giants isn't easy. But through our values of hard work, effort, passion and teamwork, we've managed to close the gap."&nbsp;

Financially, there is no doubt they come a distant third in Spain. They posted revenue figures of 384 million euros for last season, around half the 757 million of Real Madrid and 852 million of Barcelona.&nbsp;

In Deloitte's 'Football Money League' published in January, which ranks Europe's richest clubs, Atletico sat 13th for the second year running.&nbsp;

Simeone has become a victim of his own excellence, the failure to replicate the incredible 2014 title triumph or two stirring runs to the Champions League final taken as evidence of decline.&nbsp;

But what are Atletico now? There should have been no inferiority complex against Leipzig, who were playing in Germany's fourth tier when Simeone took charge and third when Atletico were crowned Spanish champions.&nbsp;

They should have got closer to Real Madrid and Barcelona too, in a season when both were flawed, presenting a golden opportunity for an outsider to sneak in.&nbsp;

In that context, high expectations might not have been welcomed by Simeone but they were justified, and Atletico never got close to meeting them.

Questions about Simeone's future have become the reflex action for disappointment, his defensive style of play celebrated when it succeeds and chastised when it fails.&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Transition season' -</h2>

&nbsp;

The contrast between the black shirts of Atleti, camped deep in their own half, against the white of Leipzig, quick, slick and full of attacking verve, was certainly stark.&nbsp;

It was tempting even to wonder if Julian Nagelsmann, Europe's most exciting up-and-coming coach, was consigning the tactical methods of Simeone to the past.&nbsp;

Yet the time for a painful separation is surely not now, after three months of encouragement that, with a much shorter summer pause, could well extend into 2020/21.&nbsp;

Simeone has defended his team's inconsistency by calling this a "transition season", insisting the players signed last year, including the 126-million-euro Joao Felix, would always need time to bed in.&nbsp;

There were departures to get over too - Diego Godin, Antoine Griezmann and Rodri among them - personality gaps that would be missed but over time could be refilled.&nbsp;

For that process to complete, interest in the likes of Jan Oblak, Thomas Partey, Jose Gimenez and Saul Niguez this summer will have to be rebuffed.&nbsp;

And the evolution that many feel is needed could come through a new assistant coach in Nelson Vivas, who will bring fresh ideas after he replaces Mono Burgos, Simeone's long-time number two.&nbsp;

Atletico have stagnated but as football is forced by the pandemic to stand still, they have a team that can grow.&nbsp;

In normal circumstances, Barcelona and Real Madrid would react to respective disappointments with aggression in the market but both are expected to start in September with much the same squad that finished in August.&nbsp;

Atletico Madrid were outplayed and out-thought by Leipzig on Thursday in Lisbon and at the end of another deflating season, Diego Simeone faces accusations he is out of date. In a mirror image of their efforts in La Liga, Atletico delivered in the Champions League when written off and crumbled when there was even a hint of expectation. They knocked out Liverpool at Anfield when nobody gave them a chance but when good form and a kind draw offered them a clear route to the final, they wilted, a 2-1 defeat sending Leipzig into the semis. In La Liga, with the top two out of sight and their place in the top four in doubt, Atletico motored through the last five weeks unbeaten to clinch third. But when held up as title challengers at the start of the season, after spending around 250 million euros and humiliating Real Madrid 7-3 in July, they floundered, winning six of their first 16 matches to sit seventh. For a long time, Atletico have revelled in their underdog status, pitching themselves as the outsiders gatecrashing Europe's wealthy elite. In a pitch on Wednesday to English fans on social media about the merits of supporting the club, the first reason given read: "Competing against the La Liga and European giants isn't easy. But through our values of hard work, effort, passion and teamwork, we've managed to close the gap." Financially, there is no doubt they come a distant third in Spain. They posted revenue figures of 384 million euros for last season, around half the 757 million of Real Madrid and 852 million of Barcelona. In Deloitte's 'Football Money League' published in January, which ranks Europe's richest clubs, Atletico sat 13th for the second year running. Simeone has become a victim of his own excellence, the failure to replicate the incredible 2014 title triumph or two stirring runs to the Champions League final taken as evidence of decline. But what are Atletico now? There should have been no inferiority complex against Leipzig, who were playing in Germany's fourth tier when Simeone took charge and third when Atletico were crowned Spanish champions. They should have got closer to Real Madrid and Barcelona too, in a season when both were flawed, presenting a golden opportunity for an outsider to sneak in. In that context, high expectations might not have been welcomed by Simeone but they were justified, and Atletico never got close to meeting them. Questions about Simeone's future have become the reflex action for disappointment, his defensive style of play celebrated when it succeeds and chastised when it fails. - 'Transition season' - The contrast between the black shirts of Atleti, camped deep in their own half, against the white of Leipzig, quick, slick and full of attacking verve, was certainly stark. It was tempting even to wonder if Julian Nagelsmann, Europe's most exciting up-and-coming coach, was consigning the tactical methods of Simeone to the past. Yet the time for a painful separation is surely not now, after three months of encouragement that, with a much shorter summer pause, could well extend into 2020/21. Simeone has defended his team's inconsistency by calling this a "transition season", insisting the players signed last year, including the 126-million-euro Joao Felix, would always need time to bed in. There were departures to get over too - Diego Godin, Antoine Griezmann and Rodri among them - personality gaps that would be missed but over time could be refilled. For that process to complete, interest in the likes of Jan Oblak, Thomas Partey, Jose Gimenez and Saul Niguez this summer will have to be rebuffed. And the evolution that many feel is needed could come through a new assistant coach in Nelson Vivas, who will bring fresh ideas after he replaces Mono Burgos, Simeone's long-time number two. Atletico have stagnated but as football is forced by the pandemic to stand still, they have a team that can grow. In normal circumstances, Barcelona and Real Madrid would react to respective disappointments with aggression in the market but both are expected to start in September with much the same squad that finished in August. Atletico, and Simeone, need to take advantage.

US Open 2020 will be missing both the singles champions from 2019 edition after Bianca Andreescu on Thursday pulled out of the Grand Slam tournament, joining Rafael Nadal on the sidelines. Andreescu, like Nadal, cited COVID-19 pandemic as their primary reason for withdrawing from the showpiece event.

Andreescu, who hasn’t participated in any tour since October due to injury, said COVID-19 pandemic restricted her to properly train for the competition. The women’s tour has restarted after COVID-19-forced break of nearly six months while men’s tour is set to resume in a week.

"After many discussions with those closest to me, I have made the difficult decision not to return to New York this year," Andreescu said in a statement posted on Twitter on Thursday.

A pair of Michael Jordan’s sneakers on Thursday shattered a record set just months ago by the sale of another pair of the basketball legend’s shoes as Christie’s auction house confirmed that the game-worn sneakes have been sold for a whopping $615,000.

The Air Jordan 1 Highs, worn by the NBA superstar during a 1985 exhibition match in Italy, helped Jordan dunk the ball so hard that it ended up shattering the glass backboard.

"This is the original shoe with an actual piece of the backboard, a piece of glass, in the sole of the shoe," said Caitlin Donovan, head of handbag and sneaker sales at Christie's -- which organized the auction with Stadium Goods.

Jordan ended up with 30 points under his belt while wearing the size 13.5 shoes, red and black in colours of Chicago Bulls team.

Previously, Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan 1 had set a record in May when it was auctioned off for a mind-boggling $560,000, while the fresh auction bagged an estimated range of $650,000 and $850,000.

The record setting sales emphasizes the rocketing market value of objects linked to the retired basketball megastar since the release of documentary ‘The Last Dance’ that chronicles the saga of Jordan and Chicago Bulls.

It also confirms that the lowly sneaker now has a place of pride in the world of wealthy collectors alongside more traditional collectibles.

England vs Pakistan, 2nd Test Live Streaming: When and where to watch ENG vs PAK match?

Waqar Younis believes Pakistan captain Azhar Ali can overcome a poor run of form as his side look for a series-levelling win in the second Test against England at Southampton starting Thursday.

Pakistan, despite not having played international cricket for six months because of the coronavirus, dominated the majority of last week's first Test at Old Trafford, with opening batsman Shan Masood hitting a Test-best 156 and leg-spinner Yasir Shah taking eight wickets.

Their pace trio of Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Afridi and teenage rising star Naseem Shah all troubled England's top order.

Pakistan, despite a second-innings collapse, were still favourites to win when they reduced England to 117-5 in pursuit of a target of 277.

But a partnership of 139 between Chris Woakes (84 not out) and Jos Buttler (75) turned the tide as England won by three wickets to go 1-0 up with two to play.

Azhar, criticised for his tactics during Buttler and Woakes' stand, has made just one fifty in 10 innings since becoming skipper in November.

Pace great Waqar, himself a former Pakistan captain and now the team's bowling coach, sympathised by saying Wednesday: "Being captain and playing in the top order is not easy.&nbsp;

"When you're in bad form, or have had a bad game, everything gets scrutinised.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I've been captain myself so I know what he's going through. But he's a seasoned player...He knows how to come out of these situations and I expect him to deliver in the upcoming two Test matches."

Pakistan played two leg-spinners at Old Trafford, with Shadab Khan backing up Yasir, but they could now deploy a fourth seamer on what may be a less receptive Ageas Bowl surface.

If that's the case then Faheem Ashraf, who has played in just four Tests since making his debut against Ireland two years ago, may be in line for a recall.

"We haven't really decided about it but we are definitely going to gear him up and see whether he is ready to go and deliver the goods for Pakistan," said Waqar.

As for the 17-year-old Naseem, the latest fast bowler to come off Pakistan's production line of pacemen, an enthusiastic Waqar said: "What a talent he is.&nbsp;

"When you talk about whether he can be a great it is very difficult to be sure about anyone. Pakistan, over the years, has produced some real quality fast bowlers.&nbsp;

"If he keeps himself fit and strong and keeps bowling, I'm sure he has the potential to become a very good bowler."

It is 10 years since Pakistan lost a Test series against England and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq said they "should not be mentally down" following last week's agonising loss.

<h2>- Stokes blow -</h2>

England star all-rounder Ben Stokes will miss the last two Tests of the series after travelling to New Zealand to be with his ill father.

Zak Crawley, dropped for the last two Tests in favour of an extra bowler deployed by England to compensate for Stokes' quad injury, is now set to return to England's top order.

Meanwhile England captain Joe Root, who has won his last six Tests as skipper, said it was "likely" James Anderson would play this week.

That is despite England's all-time most succesful bowler having taken just six wickets in three Tests at an expensive average of over 41 apiece so far this season, including 1-67 at his Lancashire home ground last week.

But Anderson, just 10 shy of becoming the first paceman to take 600 Test wickets, has dismissed rumours of his retirement, with Root saying: "To question Jimmy's ability and his record -- do that at your own peril."

Mitchell Starc remains wary of injuries from bowling too fast but the Australia paceman hopes to push the 160 km per hour mark in the coming home summer after adding five kg to his frame during a long off-season.

The left-armer is one of only a handful of bowlers to have recorded a delivery over that mark, sending down a sizzling 160.4 kph yorker during the second test against New Zealand at the WACA in 2015.

Starc broke down early in the next match at Adelaide Oval, the inaugural day-night test match, with a stress fracture.

He also strained a pectoral muscle last year after cranking up the pace against Sri Lanka in Canberra.

However, feeling refreshed and stronger from the long break since COVID-19 put a halt to cricket in March, Starc hopes he might be able to return to top speed.

"It would be nice but at the same time the two occasions I've been up around that (160 kph) mark I've snapped my foot," he said in comments published by Cricket Australia's website.

“Hopefully that’s not the case but when everything is going well, that rhythm is happening and conditions suit, then I can get that speed gun up.

“Perhaps that extra time in the gym and extra time off I might be able to push the limits again.”

Starc’s next international assignment is expected to be a white-ball tour of England slated for September, with India to tour later in the year amid strict biosecurity arrangements.

Starc tweaked his action with the help of New South Wales assistant coach Andre Adams last year and bowled with pace and control to take 29 wickets in five tests against Pakistan and New Zealand in the last home summer.

“I still want to bowl fast and I’m not going to compromise that but I had to find a way that I wasn’t expensive at the same time,” he said.

“I think that little tweak in the action has helped that.”

Brazilian superstar Neymar insisted that Paris Saint-Germain always believed they could come back from the brink to defeat Atalanta with two goals in the dying moments of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

"I never thought of going home. From start to finish, from the warm-up, we only thought of qualifying for the semi-finals," the world's most expensive footballer told RMC Sport.

Substitute Eric Choupo-Moting's goal three minutes into added time allowed PSG to beat the Italian outsiders 2-1.

Mario Pasalic gave Atalanta a 27th-minute lead but PSG were rescued when Marquinhos came forward to scramble in a last-minute equaliser.

Kylian Mbappe set up fellow substitute Choupo-Moting to win the tie right at the end.

The French champions will play RB Leipzig or Atletico Madrid next Tuesday for a place in the final.

"Nobody is going to take my mind off that I want to go to the final," added 28-year-old Neymar as PSG made the last-four for the first time since 1995.&nbsp;

"We really have a great group, we're a family, we know that with this state of mind it's impossible. to put us out of competition.&nbsp;

"We knew that a ball could arrive, that even after the equaliser we could score a second goal."

Neymar hailed Atalanta, the team which captured the imagination of neutrals, reaching this stage despite their city of Bergamo being one of the worst hit by the coronavirus.

Neymar insists PSG always knew they could win after Atalanta triumph

After years of failing to live up to their billing in Europe, Paris Saint-Germain are within 90 minutes of the Champions League final thanks to their dramatic win over Atalanta on Wednesday, and coach Thomas Tuchel now knows "everything is possible" for his team.

PSG were on the verge of another disappointing Champions League exit as they trailed Atalanta 1-0 into the 90th minute in Lisbon, where all the latter stages are being played after the long coronavirus shutdown.

But Mario Pasalic's 27th-minute strike for the Italians was finally cancelled out by Marquinhos, who scrambled in a last-gasp leveller.

Then, three minutes into injury time, Kylian Mbappe set up fellow substitute Eric Choupo-Moting to convert the clinching goal.

"The goals came very late but we deserved the victory. We never stopped believing or attacking," said Tuchel, whose team will face Atletico Madrid or RB Leipzig in the semi-final, the club's first since 1995.

"The boys who came off the bench had a big impact. We deserved it, we made our own luck."

The money ploughed into the French champions by their Qatari owners has increased the pressure on PSG to deliver and losing to Atalanta would have invited more criticism of a club whose recent record in such games has been poor.

After all, Atalanta's entire wage bill is believed to be equivalent to what PSG pay Neymar per year (about 36 million euros, or $42.5m).

Absent from decisive Champions League games in the last two seasons because of injuries, Neymar was excellent here, never giving up. He set up the equaliser and played a part in the winner.

"Going home never crossed my mind," said the world's most expensive player.

Mbappe was only fit enough to play the final half-hour, after a spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury, but his pace down the left flank had Atalanta on the back foot in the closing stages and he laid on the winner.

<h2>- Choupo-Moting makes his mark -</h2>

PSG will be hopeful the France star can start the semi-final next Tuesday, but it is thanks to Choupo-Moting that they are there at all.

"We've already won four titles this season but the most important is this one," declared the Cameroon striker.

It seems ironic that PSG -- the world's fifth-richest club according to this year's Deloitte Football League -- needed to rely on a free transfer from Stoke City to take them through to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since the Qatari takeover in 2011.

They had gone out in the last 16 the past three years, but Choupo-Moting's goal saw them break through the glass ceiling on the same day PSG marked their 50th anniversary.

From Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Ronaldinho, some fabulous players have turned out for the club in their relatively short history, although Choupo-Moting has not made much of a mark in his two seasons in Paris.

He had not previously scored in the Champions League and would probably have been best remembered for missing an open goal while standing on the line in a game against Strasbourg.

Indeed he would not even have been playing in this match in different circumstances.

Choupo-Moting's contract expired in June but he agreed to stay on for two months to play a part in the 'Final Eight' after Edinson Cavani -- PSG's all-time top scorer, who was also out of contract -- walked away.

And so the 31-year-old came on for the ineffective Mauro Icardi for the closing stages. He will at best have a bit-part role to play in the semi-final, though.

Mbappe could be ready to start then and Angel Di Maria will return from suspension, although Marco Verratti will probably be out again injured.

"There is a big difference between playing with or without Kylian," Tuchel said.

"That's clear, and it's the same with Marco and Angel. Now we have six days for Kylian to get back to his best.

"I'm not sure about Marco, but we are in the last four, everything is possible."

"I'm not sure about Marco, but we are in the last four, everything is possible."

In what could be termed as a historic and dream move, Cristiano Ronaldo might be seen playing alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona. Frustrated with Juventus’ lackluster performance in the UEFA Champions League, Ronaldo may head to a new team.&nbsp;

As per reports, Ronaldo has been offered to Barcelona that would see him play alongside Messi. Juventus are reportedly trying to get his massive £28m-per-year salary off their books.

Juventus’ sporting director Fabio Paratici, vice president Pavel Nedved and chairman Andrea Agnelli are set to have a meeting with new manager Andrea Pirlo and will decide on whom to leave out of Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala.&nbsp;

The Italian giants have been stuck by financial crisis and can afford to keep only one of Ronaldo or Dybala at the club for next season.&nbsp;

Both Ronaldo and Dybala have contracts at the club until the summer of 2022 and Juventus could get between £50m and £90m for either of their stars.

'He's been offered everywhere, including Barcelona,' Balague told 5 Live Sport on Ronaldo: I'm not sure if they can get rid of him easily with the kind of money he earns. Who is going to pay that kind of money?' &nbsp;

However, even Barcelona have been stuck hard financially due to COVID-19 pandemic and it is unlikely that they will make any big signings this summer.&nbsp;

Ronaldo and Messi have shared 11 Ballon D’Or awards between them and fans have been crying to see the duo together on the pitch. Their rivalry on the pitch is known to all.

Test-saving hundreds have become extinct now but Sachin Tendulkar carved out one such innings exactly 30 years ago, the seeds of which were sown during one afternoon in Sialkot, eight months prior to that gloomy Manchester day.

It was on August 14, 1990, that Tendulkar scored the first of his 100 international centuries, a majestic 119 not out on a fifth day track to save the game for India.

Asked about that special first, and it seemed like yesterday.

"I scored that 100 on August 14 and next day was our Independence Day, so it was special. The headline was different and that hundred at least kept the series alive till next Test at the Oval," Tendulkar told PTI on the eve of the 30th anniversary of his first ton.

So what exactly was the feeling, apart from the pure joy of achieving the milestone?

"The art of saving a Test match was a new experience for me," Tendulkar said but added he knew he could save a game when he batted with a "bloodied nose" and a blood-soaked jersey after being hit by Waqar Younis.

"In Sialkot where I got hit and scored 57, we saved that Test match, too, from 38 for 4. Waqar's bouncer and playing through pain defined me. After those kind of hits you are either stronger or you are nowhere to be seen."

As scary as it may seem now, Tendulkar, in the first innings of that Manchester match, was hit on the back of the head by one of the fastest pacers in the world back then, Devon Malcolm.

"Devon and Waqar, during that phase, were easily the two quickest bowlers in the world bowling at 90 mph.

"Yes, I didn't call the phsyio as I didn't want to show them that I am in pain. My pain threshold was fairly high. Its okay to get hit. So what. You don't show your pain to the bowler," the legend said.

Coach Ramakant Acherkar prepared him for all sorts of pain by making him play on the same pitch for 25 days straight at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana.

"I was used to getting hit on my body from my days in Shivaji Park as Acherkar sir would make us play on that and it would have enormous wear and tear.

"The same pitch we played a match on one day and next day we were back for nets. So balls would just jump off length and hit my nose.

"In fact, I would just throw the ball up and take it on my body to absorb the pain."

Back to the match, the shots that he remembers are the exquisite backfoot cover drives off Chris Lewis deliveries that darted in.

"Lewis bowled sharp inswing and throughout my career, backfoot cover drive had been my favourite shot.

"The bowler who was the best by far in that series was Angus Fraser. He had a beautiful late outswing, high arm action, so ball would bounce and move so late that you had to play at it.

"It was a case of showing patience and credit to Manoj that we had a 160-run stand," he said.

Did he feel in the last hour that the team has been able to save the match.

"No way till the last over. We came together when we were six down (183/6) but me and Manoj together said 'yeh hum kar sakte hain, match bacha lenge' (we can save the match).

"Also England had attacking field as they could only win from that position," Tendulkar said.

And any special anecdote that he still remembers?

"Well I was 17 and the Man of The Match was presented with a bottle of champagne. Neither did I drink and also I hadn't reached the legal age for drinking. My senior teammates would tell me 'what would you do with it'," he laughed.

But there is another thing that Tendulkar fondly remembers to this day.

"Sanjay Manjrekar presented me a white shirt which was a gift for scoring a hundred. I was really touched," he concluded.

I am happy to confirm that I will participate at the Western &amp; Southern Open and US Open this year.
It was not an easy decision to make with all the obstacles and challenges on many sides, but the prospect of competing again makes me really excited.

During my career, I have played some of my best matches at the USTA Billie Jean King National tennis center.

I am aware that this time around it will be very different with all the protocols and safety measures that are put in place to protect players and people of NY.

Nevertheless, I have trained hard with my team and got my body in shape so I am ready to adapt to new conditions. I've done all the check-ups to make sure I am fully recovered and I am ready to get back on court fully committed to playing my best tennis.

I respect and appreciate everyone taking time, effort, and energy to organize these two events for the tennis players to be able to go back to their working field.

Unfortunately for the players and the game itself, the current situation is not allowing everyone to travel and compete at the same level of risk, and I hope the situation will change soon and we will all be back to doing what we love and do best.

The much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 is set to commence from September 19 in the UAE and all the eight franchises will have their eyes on the coveted trophy. Young Bengal pacer Ishan Porel, who has also impressed for India Under-19 and India A, will be making his IPL debut for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) after impressing with in the domestic and development circuit.

Porel, who was signed up by KXIP at his base price of INR 20 lakh, will look to carry forward his blistering run of form with the ball when he takes to the field in the UAE. While his ability to extract sharp bounce and movement have been lauded by many, his variations and knack of hitting yorkers have made him one of the rising stars in Indian cricket.&nbsp;

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Subhayan Chakraborty, Ishan Porel talked about IPL 2020 in the UAE, Kings XI Punjab squad, skipper KL Rahul, Anil Kumble and much more.&nbsp;

Subhayan Chakraborty: Ishan, your first IPL and it will take place in the UAE. How excited are you?

Ishan Porel: I can’t even explain how excited I am. I have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time now and thankfully, Kings XI Punjab showed their trust on me and my bowling. I am looking forward to live up to their trust and showcase my ability in front of the entire world. I am confident and really excited to take the field for my side KXIP.&nbsp;

Subhayan: How did the last five months go for you? In Bengal, there was not only COVID-19 scare but the state was also stuck by the deadly Amphan…

Ishan Porel: It was challenging. First of all, it was really strange to stay out of cricket for this long due to COVID-19 and Amphan happened. It was a tough phase for everyone in West Bengal but it taught many new learnings in how to be more adaptive as per circumstances. My patience level increased a lot. I tried training a bit as well with all the safety guidelines just to keep myself ready.&nbsp;

Subhayan: And you did step up to help a lot of people after that storm?

Ishan Porel: I feel it is our duty to help the needy people during these times. I tried giving back to the community as much as I could. There are still some areas where people are yet to recover from Amphan and we are still working as much as possible to help those people. It is the basic duty of people who are privileged enough.

Subhayan: So IPL is happening in the UAE. Only three stadiums. Do you think it will be challenging for pace bowlers when pitches start to up later in the tournament?

Ishan Porel: Obviously, it will be a challenge. But as a modern bowler, you need to use your variations as per the need. We have seen in the last few IPLs that if a pacer is bowling quick then it is easier for batsmen to pick him up. But whatever I know of cricket, curators might keep grass covering in the first half of the tournament to keep the pitches alive and if we grab that advantage then it will help me or the pacers to build a momentum for the entire tournament. At least I am accustomed to bowling in slower tracks from my experience in Kolkata.

Subhayan: And how excited are you to share the dressing room with the likes of Mohammed Shami, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Jordan, Jimmy Neesham and others?

Ishan Porel: I am really looking forward to learning from them. They have plenty of international experience and I feel sharing the dressing room and the ground with them will help me build a solid foundation for my future. As everyone say, IPL is a platform which improves even the best of players and I am just starting now.&nbsp;

But on a different note, I want to spend a lot of time with our fielding coach Jonty Rhodes. Today’s international pacers are brilliant fielders as well and being a youngster I want to become better in that regard and set a benchmark for myself.&nbsp;

Subhayan: You have a lovely story of Rahul Dravid and how he helped you during your Under-19 days. The next legend you will be working with is Anil Kumble. How eager are you to work alongside him?

Ishan Porel: Anil Kumble sir is an inspiration. How he bowled with a broken jaw and his success with Team India is known to all. Moreover, he is extremely disciplined and thinks about cricket a lot. My main focus is to grow and learn more about the game and there is no one better than Kumble sir to help me in that regard. I am really excited and looking forward to work with him.&nbsp;

Subhayan: And what about KL Rahul? Have you interacted since the auction?

Ishan Porel: Tremendous player and very encouraging! I mean he has that aura of calmness around him.&nbsp;The last time we spoke was during the Ranji Trophy semi-final between Bengal and Karnataka. He praised my form and encouraged me to do well in the future and for KXIP. I have a small memory with KL – he was the captain of India Under-23 and I was at NCA during my Under-16 days and I bowled to him in the nets that time. I don’t know whether he remembers this or not but I do (laughs).&nbsp;

Subhayan: So Ishan, do you think the bio-secure bubble will have a psychological impact on the players?&nbsp;

Ishan Porel: It might play a role during the last part of the tournament. But to honest, this coronavirus has taught us how to remain indoors and our patience level has also increased so much. We will be able to interact with our teammates and staff so that’s a good thing. And with us being in competitive mode, I don’t think it will irk the players that much. Safety is the paramount, at the moment.&nbsp;

Porel in Ishan-daar form! 😍#SaddaPunjab #RanjiTrophy pic.twitter.com/LPJA8m3Uhg — Kings XI Punjab (@lionsdenkxip) March 4, 2020 × Subhayan: And how excited are you to share the dressing room with the likes of Mohammed Shami, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Jordan, Jimmy Neesham and others? Ishan Porel: I am really looking forward to learning from them. They have plenty of international experience and I feel sharing the dressing room and the ground with them will help me build a solid foundation for my future. As everyone say, IPL is a platform which improves even the best of players and I am just starting now. But on a different note, I want to spend a lot of time with our fielding coach Jonty Rhodes. Today’s international pacers are brilliant fielders as well and being a youngster I want to become better in that regard and set a benchmark for myself. Subhayan: You have a lovely story of Rahul Dravid and how he helped you during your Under-19 days. The next legend you will be working with is Anil Kumble. How eager are you to work alongside him? Ishan Porel: Anil Kumble sir is an inspiration. How he bowled with a broken jaw and his success with Team India is known to all. Moreover, he is extremely disciplined and thinks about cricket a lot. My main focus is to grow and learn more about the game and there is no one better than Kumble sir to help me in that regard. I am really excited and looking forward to work with him. Subhayan: And what about KL Rahul? Have you interacted since the auction? Ishan Porel: Tremendous player and very encouraging! I mean he has that aura of calmness around him. The last time we spoke was during the Ranji Trophy semi-final between Bengal and Karnataka. He praised my form and encouraged me to do well in the future and for KXIP. I have a small memory with KL – he was the captain of India Under-23 and I was at NCA during my Under-16 days and I bowled to him in the nets that time. I don’t know whether he remembers this or not but I do (laughs). Subhayan: So Ishan, do you think the bio-secure bubble will have a psychological impact on the players? Ishan Porel: It might play a role during the last part of the tournament. But to honest, this coronavirus has taught us how to remain indoors and our patience level has also increased so much. We will be able to interact with our teammates and staff so that’s a good thing. And with us being in competitive mode, I don’t think it will irk the players that much. Safety is the paramount, at the moment. View this post on Instagram Memories to cherish forever. #memories A post shared by Ishan Porel (@ishanporel) on Jul 17, 2020 at 1:23am PDT × Subhayan: Any targets you have set for yourself? Ishan Porel: As a youngster, I want to play as many matches as possible. And yes, who doesn’t want to take the wickets of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Andre Russell and other big names. If I get an opportunity to bowl against them, I will surely try to dismiss them. Subhayan: Is there any pressure of performing as it will be your first IPL? Ishan Porel: Not at all! Competitive cricket is all about pressure and that is a good thing, in my opinion. Arun Lal sir used to tell us that pressure brings the best out of good players and I have kept that in my mind. I just want to give my best. Subhayan: What will be the message for your fans or cricket fans in general ahead of IPL 2020? Ishan Porel: First of all, thanks to all the fans who have supported me during my good and bad times. Fans are the ones who turn cricketers into superstars. They are the heartbreak of the sport. Hopefully, they will keep their blessings on me and my cricket.

French World Cup-winning midfielder Blaise Matudi has left Italian giants Juventus by mutual consent after three years, the Italian champions announced on Wednesday.

Matuidi joined Juventus from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 and had one year left on his contract but is now reportedly set to move to the United States to play for David Beckham’s Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami.

Matuidi has been a mainstay of Juventus midfield since moving from Paris in 2017 and cemented his spot in the XI with his powerhouse presence in the heart of the pitch.&nbsp;

"Blaise Matuidi and Juventus say goodbye with the consensual termination of the player’s contract," Juventus said in a statement.

IPL 2020: MS Dhoni undergoes COVID-19 test, report expected today

Shakhtar Donetsk booked a clash with Inter Milan in the Europa League semi-finals after goals from Brazilians Junior Moraes, Taison, Alan Patrick and Dodo gave them a 4-1 win over FC Basel in a one-sided last-eight clash on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian champions will take on Inter in Duesseldorf on Monday after Sunday’s semi-final in Cologne between 2017 Europa League winners Manchester United and Sevilla, who have won Europe’s second-tier competition a record five times.

The final is set for Aug. 21 in Cologne.

Sevilla clinched their berth with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in Tuesday’s other quarter-final thanks to a late goal by Lucas Ocampos.

Shakhtar, who won Europe’s second-tier club competition in 2009, missed a string of chances to triumph by an even bigger margin as they dominated the match with crisp one-touch passing and superior close control.

Moraes headed the Ukrainian side into a second-minute lead after a howler by Basel’s Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Nikolic, who was beaten to the ball by the striker after rushing off his line to meet a Marlos corner.

Nikolic made amends with several good saves in the first half but was powerless in the 22nd minute when Taison capped a lightning Shakhtar break with a deflected shot after good work by Marlos and a clever dummy by Patrick.

Marcos Antonio rattled the woodwork with a long-range effort in the 40th minute before Shakhtar took their foot off the pedal in the second half, content with keeping possession as their rivals chased shadows.

Still, Patrick made it 3-0 with a 75th-minute penalty after Yannick Marchand fouled livewire Taison in the area and right back Dodo added the fourth in the 89th minute, with the goal awarded after a VAR check for offside.

Substitute Ricky van Wolfswinkel netted a stoppage time consolation for Basel from close range but the Swiss side had little to cheer after being blown away by their opponents.

Four-goal Shakhtar set up Europa semi against Inter

Sevilla midfielder Lucas Ocampos headed a late goal to snatch a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers as they reached the Europa League semi-finals on Tuesday after the English side paid the price for an early penalty miss.

Raul Jimenez saw his hesitant spot kick easily saved by goalkeeper Bono in the 13th minute of the single-leg tie and Wolves failed to muster a shot on target after that as former Real Madrid and Spain coach Julen Lopetegui’s side took control.

Five-times winners Sevilla, who will face Manchester United in the last four in Cologne on Sunday, enjoyed 73% of possession and won 14 corners to none for Wolves in a one-sided game.

Wolves, playing in their first European quarter-final for 48 years, appeared to feel the effects of a marathon season which saw them play 59 matches, including 17 in the Europa League starting at home to Crusaders on July 25 last year.

Yet the Midlands team made a promising start with Adama Traore at the centre of things. Having set up an early chance which Raul Jimenez headed straight at Bono, the Spaniard powered into the area and was tripped from behind by Diego Carlos.

Jimenez, who usually waits for the keeper to move, appeared caught in two minds and his effort was comfortably stopped by Bono with a dive to his left. It was the Mexican’s first penalty miss for Wolves after converting his previous eight efforts.

Sevilla dominated the match after that, passing the ball around in the centre of the pitch, but it was fairly unproductive possession and they created few openings.

The second half was a similar story with Wolves apparently happy to allow Sevilla to knock the ball around in midfield.

But the Spaniards grew more dangerous towards the end and broke through with two minutes left. Their 13th corner was rolled to Ever Banega and he curled a cross into the area which Ocampos flicked past keeper Rui Patricio.
