Spanish side Atletico Madrid on Sunday reported two positive coronavirus tests, just four days before they face Leipzig in Portugal for a place in the Champions League semi-finals.

"On Saturday, all members of the first team and the club's party to Lisbon underwent tests as required by UEFA protocols to participate in the quarter-finals of the Champions League," said a club statement.

"Among the results known today, two positives have appeared and they are self-isolating in their respective homes."

It was not revealed whether the two positive cases involved players or backroom staff.

Atletico said UEFA as well as the Spanish and Portuguese football and health authorities have been informed and that a fresh round of tests will be carried out on the squad and support team.

They admitted this could mean last-minute changes to travel schedules as well as accommodation plans in the Portuguese capital.

"The club will coordinate the new schedules with UEFA and as soon as there is a new plan it will be made public," added the statement.

"We also request the utmost respect over the identity of the two positive cases."

Spain has so far been one of the countries worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with 310,000 registered infections and 28,500 deaths.

Although most sports have returned from a months-long lockdown caused by the virus, there are concerns that numbers of cases are beginning to rise again.

In recent days, Spain has seen local quarantines imposed in the Basque Country, Catalonia and Aragon.

Protective face masks have been made compulsory in several busy areas, especially in the Madrid region.

Last month, Atletico's city rivals Real Madrid announced forward Mariano Diaz had tested positive for COVID-19.

Sevilla, meanwhile, reported an unnamed player had also contracted the illness.

Real have since been knocked out of the Champions League but Sevilla are still involved in the Europa League.

They play English side Wolves in their quarter-final in Duisburg, Germany, on Tuesday.

The Champions League had been put on hold since March because of the virus with the last-16 stage only completed on Friday and Saturday.

In their statement on Sunday, Atletico were keen to reassure football authorities, explaining that they had followed a very strict protocol even after the end of La Liga season on July 19.

Weekly tests were carried out on July 26 and August 2.

The new IPL title sponsor to replace Chinese mobile phone company Vivo will hold the rights for only a four-and-a-half-month period and the highest bid may not necessarily end up being the winning one, the BCCI stated on Monday.

Vivo, which had a Rs 440 crore per year deal for five seasons, has suspended its partnership with the Board due to the Sino-India border stand-off. BCCI floated the tender invite for a new sponsor on Monday

Secretary Jay Shah announced a 13-point clause for submission of the bids from interested "third parties" and the winner will be announced on August 18. The last date for submission of bids is August 14.

"The Rights are available for the period from August 18, 2020 to December 31, 2020," the BCCI press release stated.

"Details regarding the Rights and product categories in which the Rights are available will be provided only to parties who submit the EOI and are found eligible," it stated.

The BCCI also stated that bidding the highest amount may not fetch the rights for a company if the board is not satisfied with its plans on commercialising its most precious property.

"...It is clarified that BCCI shall not be obliged to award the Rights to the third party which indicates willingness to pay the highest fees in the course of discussions/ negotiations with BCCI after submitting an EOI," the BCCI stated.

"BCCI's decision in this regard will also depend on a number of other relevant factors, including but not limited to, the manner in which the third party intends to exploit the Rights and the potential impact of the same on brand IPL...," the BCCI release stated.

"...(it) will be examined/evaluated by BCCI in the course of discussions/negotiations with interested third parties who submit an EOI," it added.

It can now be safely assumed that BCCI will get a lesser valuation for a four-month period compared to Vivo which had the rights for a bigger duration.

According to the BCCI's norms for accepting the 'Expression of Interest" (EOI), "...Turnover of the interested third party must be over Rs 300 Crore (Indian Rupees Three Hundred Crores only) as per the last audited accounts."

The audited accounts need to be submitted with the bid.

The BCCI also made it clear that middle-men or agents cannot enter the bidding process and "any such bids will be cancelled."

"It is clarified that marketing agency/agents are not eligible to bid and any bid submitted by a marketing agency/agent shall be rejected at the outset."

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Group is among those who have expressed interest in bidding for the rights.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised Anthony Martial for working on his physique as the French forward enjoys a career-best campaign at Old Trafford.

Martial scored his 23rd goal for United in all competitions this season against LASK Linz in Wednesday’s Europa League last-16 victory.

“Anthony has made huge strides this season in many aspects of his game,” Solskjaer told an eve-of-match news conference ahead of Monday’s Europa League quarter-final clash with Copenhagen in Cologne.

“Physically, he is at the best level of his career. We know he can do worldies but I like him scoring the simple goals, when he is in between the posts. He’s done that a few times.

“He’s in the gym a lot working on his fitness and strength. I’m just looking forward to seeing him improve. There’s more to come from him.”

United arrived earlier on Sunday for the remainder of the Europa League tournament, which will feature one-match knockout ties at different German venues, culminating in the final, also in Cologne, on Aug. 21.

Solskjaer, who has already guided United to Champions League qualification with a third-placed finish in the Premier League, said the end-of-season event will aid his side’s development.

“We went into this season knowing that Europa League is a great chance for us to get a trophy, to get far in a tournament,” he added.

“But also to groom a few of the youngsters and it was perfect for us.

“I think if we’d been in the Champions League, I maybe wouldn’t have had the chance to play the likes of Brandon (Williams), Mason (Greenwood), so many of the young kids who have now started what’s going to be fantastic careers.”

Pakistan cannot dwell on their defeat by England in the first test at Old Trafford as it would make it tougher for them to respond in the next two matches, coach Misbah-ul-Haq has said.

England sealed an unlikely three-wicket victory on Saturday after slumping to 117-5 at one point in their pursuit of 277, as Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler shared a sixth-wicket partnership of 139 runs to turn the tide.

"It was a thrilling test match and full credit must go to England for the way they fought back, came from behind and took the game away from us," Misbah wrote in his column on the Pakistan Cricket Board's website.

“There is disappointment, of course, but we must not keep that feeling in our minds otherwise it will be difficult to come back... the team believes we can fight back.

“Sometimes luck doesn’t favour you, sometimes the opposition plays well – that’s the beauty of the game.”

Misbah praised opener Shan Masood, who scored 156 in the first innings, as well as pacemen Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah who picked up two wickets each.

“It was a brave decision to bat first against England’s bowling attack in those conditions,” the 46-year-old said.

“Shan Masood batted really well and... should be given a lot of credit for his innings. He’s been working so hard... he’s changed a few things in his setup. He’s a different batsman.

“The bowling was also excellent. It’s a young seam attack, apart from Mohammad Abbas, and both Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah did really well.”

The second test of the three-match series will begin on Thursday at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

England’s iconic pacer James Anderson confirmed on Monday that he is not thinking about his Test retirement but agreed that the decision to retire could be taken out of his hands if he continues to underperform for England.

The 38-year-old has witnessed a frustrating summer while picking up just six wickets in his last three Test matches fueling speculations that his 17-year Test career could come up to an end.

Anderson admitted to struggling for rhythm in England’s first Test against Pakistan in Manchester but the legendary bowler added that the thought of quitting cricket never crossed his minds.

“There’s no truth to that. It’s been a frustrating week personally, I felt out of rhythm and probably for the first time in 10 years I got emotional on the field and let that get to me,” Anderson told reporters on Monday.

“I think after one bad game, there are some whispers that go around but I don’t really think that’s fair. I’ve just got to work hard and hope I get the nod for the next game.”

Anderson, who has 590 Test wickets to his name, said earlier in 2019 said he was eager to continue for England and confirmed his desire to play for England until Ashes 2021 in Australia.

“I want to play as long as I possibly can. If I keep bowling the way I did this week, the opportunity to retire will be taken out of my hands. It will be a selection issue. But, for me, I’m still hungry,” he said.

Anderson is on the brink of becoming the first pacer to pick up 600 test wickets but he admitted his focus was not on personal milestones.

“It’s not a huge incentive for me really. I want to be bowling well and contribute to winning,” he said. “If I get 600 wickets then great, if I don’t, I’m happy with what I’ve got.”

England's James Anderson quashes retirement rumours

Jadon Sancho travelled with Borussia Dortmund to their pre-season training camp on Monday, the day the Bundesliga club's deadline for the England winger's possible transfer to Manchester United expired.

The 20-year-old is of the brightest talents in Europe and Dortmund, who finished second in the Bundesliga last season, had slapped a 120 million euros ($140 million) price tag on him.

Media in the United Kingdom reported last week that United were close to signing the starlet.

The quest for an Olympic medal can break even the best. Gagan Narang had been India's most successful shooter at the world stage post 2006 but his journey to the Olympics in 2004 and 2008 ended in heartbreak. Those defeats had affected the health of his parents as well but the versatile shooter was determined to stand on the Olympic podium. Narang opens up on the turmoil within and how those dark days drove him to Olympic glory at London.

WION Broadband Olympic Edition: How Personal Turmoil Drove Narang to Olympic Glory?

London 2012 was India's most successful Olympics with India's sports persons winning a record haul of 6 medals. Indian Shooting's rich legacy at the Olympics continued with Gagan Narang overcoming personal turmoil to end his wait for that treasured spot on the podium and Vijay Kumar winning Silver in Rapid Fire pistol. Joydeep Karmakar stunned the top names in Prone as he finished 4th and narrowly missed out on a medal.

WION Broadband Olympic Edition: Indian Shooting's Legacy Continues at London

The margin between victory and defeat at the Olympics can range from one-hundredth of a second to something even more measurable as 0.9 millimetres. An Olympic medal leads to sporting immortality but not many remember those who miss out. At the London Olympics, Joydeep Karmakar defied the odds and form books to finish 4th in the Men's Prone. Dismissed as nothing more than a tourist by many in the Indian sporting circles, Karmakar delivered his best at the biggest stage in world sport. 8 years later he admits he broke down seeing others on the podium but had no regrets having performed to the best of his abilities.

Tiger Woods said the absence of an adoring and raucous crowd at the PGA Championship on Thursday was part of the “new normal” for the sport, which is holding its first major without any fans in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Woods, who is playing for just the second time since the PGA Tour returned to action in mid-June, shot an opening round 2-under 68 at an eerily quiet TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

“Well, that’s our new normal,” he told reporters.

“It’s just the way it is and it’s going to be for a while ... the energy is different.”

On the plus side, he said not being followed around by noisy fans made it easier to focus.

That showed in his putting, which included a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-four 13th that drew applause and some hoots from a group of grounds crew.

“It’s just different. That’s probably the only way to say it,” he said.

“This is what we’re going to have to get used to in the near future and for probably for a while.”

Every player and caddie underwent coronavirus testing prior to the tournament and media are required to wear face coverings and maintain social distance at the event, which was originally scheduled to be held in May.

Woods is looking to win his 16th major, fifth PGA Championship and record-breaking 83rd PGA Tour victory at the lake side course on the west side of San Francisco.

Woods, who went out in the morning wave alongside world number one Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy, did not appear bothered by the coastal fog and cooler conditions as he mixed five birdies and three bogeys.

He is using a new, longer putter at the event, which he said helps take pressure off his surgically-repaired back, allowing him to practice for longer.

“Most of the guys on the Champions Tour have gone to longer putters as they have gotten older, because it’s easier to bend over, or not bend over,” the 44-year-old said with a smile.

“And so this putter is just a little bit longer and I’ve been able to spend a little bit more time putting.”

Formule One star Charles Leclerc on Thursday complained that his words have been "manipulated" on social media to suggest he is racist because he has not joined drivers taking a knee before races.

The Monegasque Ferrari driver argued his case both a video news conference ahead of this weekend's 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone, and in a series of tweets earlier in the afternoon.

He told the press conference he "did not want to be judged any more."

Leclerc is one of six drivers who chose to stand and not take a knee during all four pre-race anti-racism demonstrations this season.

On Thursday, he complained he had become a focus of criticism.

"It is very sad to see how some people manipulate my words to make headlines making me sound like a racist," he wrote in the first of a series of tweets.

"I am not racist and I absolutely hate racism. Racism is disgusting," he went on.

"Stop putting me in the same group as these disgusting people that are discriminating others because of their skin colour, religion or gender.

"I'm not part of them and I never will. I've always been respectful to everyone and that should be the standard in today's world.

"And to whoever is using my image to promote their wrong ideas, please stop. I'm not into politics and I don't want to be involved in that."

He talked about his tweets during the news conference.

"As I've said many times, I'm quite active on social media and I just do not accept to be called the way I've been called in the last few weeks -- negatively obviously, just because of not kneeling.

"I just wanted to make a straightforward tweet just to express my feelings and that's it."

Fellow-driver Kevin Magnussen of Haas also explained his position on Thursday after he chose to abandon kneeling and to stand instead before last Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Magnussen said he wanted to support F1's anti-racism stance, but to distance himself from any political message associated with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Zinedine Zidane has said Gareth Bale told him he did not want to play for Real Madrid against Manchester City in the Champions League last 16 on Friday.

But Zidane said Eden Hazard is fit to face City, despite concerns regarding the Belgian's right ankle.

Bale was left out of the squad and has not travelled to Manchester, where Madrid are aiming to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in February to reach the quarter-finals.

Sources close to Bale claim he told Zidane he did not want to travel, after finding out he was not included in the squad, but was ready to play.

"There is a relationship of respect between player and coach," Zidane said in a press conference on Thursday.

"He preferred not to play, nothing more, and the rest is between me and him."

Zidane said it was a personal decision rather than a technical one but would not be drawn on details, insisting "there are things that have to stay in the changing room".

Bale's omission adds another low point to a turbulent season for the Welshman, who only started one of Madrid's last 11 matches after La Liga resumed in March.

Asked about Bale's future at Real Madrid, Zidane said: "Gareth Bale is a Real Madrid player, nothing has changed and I respect him like everyone else."

Zidane had more positive news regarding Hazard, whom he says is fit to face City, despite feeling pain in his troublesome right ankle last month.

"He had some problems at the end of La Liga but now he is much better and we have had a lot of time to prepare for this match," said Zidane.

"I think he's fine and feels confident."

Hazard underwent surgery in March on his ankle but still had his minutes managed during the run-in.

"Playing every two or three days made it difficult for him to recover," said Zidane. "But he is fine now and shouldn't be playing with discomfort."

Madrid will be without their captain Sergio Ramos against City, who will start the match as favourites to progress.

"We have a disadvantage," Zidane said. "But we know tomorrow is another game and that knock-out games aren't over until the last minute."

Bayern Munich are hoping Champions League success can convince Thiago Alcantara and David Alaba, who are stalling over extensions, to stay.

Bayern host Chelsea at Munich's Allianz Arena on Saturday in the last 16, second leg of the Champions League holding a 3-0 lead after hammering the Blues in London in February when Serge Gnabry scored twice in a gala display.

Since then, Bayern have secured an eighth straight Bundesliga title and lifted the German Cup putting them on course for the treble having won all 11 games post lockdown.

Chelsea are without wingers Christian Pulisic, who injured his hamstring in the FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal, and Pedro, who underwent shoulder surgery after being stretchered off at Wembley.

Blues skipper Cesar Azpilicueta is also expected to miss the Munich match after his hamstring injury added to Chelsea's list of wounded.

Bayern's personnel concerns are of a different nature as Alcantara, who has been linked to Liverpool, and Alaba, both have one year left on their contracts and are stalling over talks.

Like senior club bosses, forward Thomas Mueller hopes Champions League success can convince them to stay.

"Thiago is very safe on the ball, which does us good, and it is often underestimated how much he works to win back the ball," Mueller told Munich-based newspaper Sueddeutche Zeitung.

"David is extremely important for controlling and building up our game."

Mueller, a 2014 World Cup winner, says it would be "extremely bitter" if both Alcantara and Alaba left at the end of Bayern's Champions League campaign.

Nothing is likely to be decided while Bayern are still in Europe, yet both are in great form.

Alaba, 28, who joined as a teenager in 2008, has been dubbed "the black Franz Beckenbauer" by Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge for his outstanding displays at centre-back this season.

With right-back Benjamin Pavard injured, Joshua Kimmich has switched back into defence with his central midfield place going to Thiago, who was outstanding in last Friday's 1-0 friendly win over Marseille.

Last week, Rummenigge revealed Alcantara has signalled "that he wants to do something new", but so far no club has made an offer for the 29-year-old.

Having joined from Barcelona in 2013, under former Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, Alcantara has won the German league title in each of his seven seasons in Munich.

Rummenigge has made it clear neither will leave cheaply, "despite the coronavirus, there will not be a summer sale at FC Bayern", who reportedly want at least 30 million euros ($35 million) for Alcantara and more for Alaba.

However, for now it is just "important that both concentrate on the Champions League, then we will decide in peace," added Rummenigge.

"David is extremely important for controlling and building up our game." Mueller, a 2014 World Cup winner, says it would be "extremely bitter" if both Alcantara and Alaba left at the end of Bayern's Champions League campaign.

Shan Masood scored a third century in as many innings and seamer Mohammad Abbas caused mayhem at the top of the England order as Pakistan moved ahead in the first test at the close of day two at Old Trafford on Thursday.

England are teetering at 92 for four, still 234 runs behind Pakistan’s competitive first innings total of 326, a total boosted by a superb career-best 156 from opener Shan.

Much will likely depend on the current partnership at the wicket as Ollie Pope (46 not out) and Jos Buttler (15 not out) must engineer a rebuilding job as the last recognised batsmen.

With Chris Woakes set to come in at number seven, it is a long tail for the hosts and early Pakistan wickets on the third morning could see them finish well behind the tourists’ first innings total.

Pakistan’s seam attack was highlighted as a danger prior to the series and their first skirmish with the England batsmen ended in their favour.

Shaheen Afridi trapped Rory Burns (4) leg before wicket, before Abbas (2-24) did likewise to Dom Sibley (8), and then claimed the prize wicket of Ben Stokes for a duck, the ball clipping the off-stump with a subtle nip away off the pitch.

Captain Joe Root (14) was subdued and then out, edging leg-spinner Yasir Shah to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan.

Pakistan resumed the second day on 139 for two, but added only 48 runs in the morning session at a paltry rate of 1.85 per over, also losing key batsman Babar Azam (69), Asad Shafiq (7) and Rizwan (9).

But for the first hour after lunch, they upped the tempo considerably as Shan and Shadab Khan (45) punished England’s limp attack, adding 105 runs in little more than 25 overs for the sixth wicket.

Shan batted for 319 deliveries to anchor the innings before he was trapped leg before wicket by Stuart Broad (3-54).

Pakistan’s long tail was wrapped up with fiery fast bowler Jofra Archer (3-59) contributing to their demise.

While men's cricket has continued after a prolonged break due to COVID-19, women's cricket continues to suffer with unclarity regarding bilateral series and tournaments. The much-awaited Women's Big Bash League is set to revive women's sport but will clash with the Women's Challengers trophy, which will be played in between the playoffs and final of IPL 2020 in the UAE.

The 2020 edition of T20 World Cup was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic and that opened up a window for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. While there was no confirmation given, during the announcement of postponement, on who will be hosting the event in what year, the situation has been made clear following the ICC Board meeting, which took place virtually on Friday.

ICC Acting Chairman Imran Khwaja said: “Over the last few months as we have considered how we return to staging global events, our number one priority has been to protect the health and safety of everyone involved in ICC events.

“The decisions the Board have taken today are in the best interests of the sport, our partners and importantly our fans. I’d like to thank our partners at the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket New Zealand as well as the Australian and New Zealand governments for their continued support and commitment to a safe return to ICC events.”

ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said: “We now have absolute clarity on the future of ICC events enabling all of our Members to focus on the rescheduling of lost international and domestic cricket. We will now proceed as planned with the Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in India and host the 2022 edition in Australia.

“We have taken the decision to move the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup to give players from every competing nation, the best opportunity to be ready for the world’s biggest stage and there is still a global qualifier to complete to decide the final three teams.

“There has been no women’s international cricket played since the conclusion of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year and due to the varying impact of COVID-19 globally that is likely to remain the situation for a number of the teams. Moving the event by 12 months gives all competing teams the chance to play a sufficient level of cricket ahead of both the qualification event and leading into a Cricket World Cup so the integrity of the tournament is maintained.”

The format of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will remain as it was for 2020 and all teams that qualified for that event will now participate in India in 2021. A new qualification process will be run for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

The Indian men's hockey team captain Manpreet Singh and three other players have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of a national camp in Bengaluru, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) said on Friday.

Besides Manpreet, defender Surender Kumar, Jaskaran Singh and drag-flicker Varun Kumar have also tested positive for the deadly virus.

"I am self quarantined on the SAI campus and I am very happy with the way SAI authorities have handled the situation...I am doing fine and hope to recover very soon," Manpreet said in the statement issued by SAI.

The players tested positive after returning to the national hockey camp at the SAI South Centre in Bengaluru following a month-long break.

They were earlier stranded at the centre for over two months when a national lockdown was imposed to contain the virus.

Women’s world number seven Kiki Bertens has joined a growing list of players withdrawing from this month’s U.S. Open due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dutch player said on Friday.

Men’s defending champion Rafa Nadal and women’s world number one Ashleigh Barty have also opted against travelling to New York to play the hardcourt Grand Slam as well as the Western & Southern Open that will work as a warmup for the U.S. Open.

“After long consideration I have decided not to go to the States for Cincinnati and the U.S. Open,” the 28-year-old Bertens said on Instagram.

“The situation around COVID-19 is still worrying and the health of everyone and the control over this virus is priority.”

The United States has close to 5 million cases of COVID-19 and almost 160,000 people have died, according to a Reuters tally.

The U.S. Open organisers (USTA) are creating a bio-secure ‘bubble’ in New York to hold the tournament from Aug. 31 without spectators. But concerns remain about whether players would face mandatory quarantines upon returning home from the U.S. Open.

Former world number one Andy Murray, who won the U.S. Open in 2012, said on Monday that players travelling to New York needed assurance that they would not face mandatory quarantines after returning to Europe.

“Our prime minister indicated yesterday that we should be quarantined for 14 days after coming back from the States,” Bertens said.<iframe data-google-container-id="a" data-gtm-yt-inspected-341207_491="true" data-is-safeframe="true" frameborder="0" height="0" id="google_ads_iframe_/4735792/in.reuters/sports/article_5" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" name="1-0-37;13004;<!DOCTYPE html><html><head><meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale=1.0, minimum-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0, user-scalable=no"><script>var jscVersion = 'r20200805';</script><script>var google_casm=[];</script><script></script><style>	@font-face {

“Of course we respect this as a team and this would disturb our preparation for my beloved clay court tournaments in Rome and Paris. I hope the situation will soon take a positive turn and wish everyone good health,” she said.

“The situation around COVID-19 is still worrying and the health of everyone and the control over this virus is priority.” The United States has close to 5 million cases of COVID-19 and almost 160,000 people have died, according to a Reuters tally. “Our prime minister indicated yesterday that we should be quarantined for 14 days after coming back from the States,” Bertens said. “Of course we respect this as a team and this would disturb our preparation for my beloved clay court tournaments in Rome and Paris. I hope the situation will soon take a positive turn and wish everyone good health,” she said. With the announcement that ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, due to take place across Australia in October and November 2020, has been postponed and the present COVID-19 situation in India, the BCCI and ECB have confirmed that England men’s white-ball tour to India, originally scheduled in the ICC Future Tours Programme for late September to early October 2020, will be postponed until early 2021.

BCCI and ECB are in consultation with a view to confirming the 2021 schedules for an all-formats England men’s tour to India to run from late January to late March and for India’s Test tour to England due in the summer of 2021.

ECB’s Chief Executive Officer, Tom Harrison, said: “Now that we have clarity regarding the postponement of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, it enables us to work with other Boards to progress the vital task of optimising the international schedules in the challenging circumstances that we have all been having to address with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“International cricket between India and England is a highlight of the cricketing calendar and we look forward to working with the BCCI to firm-up the schedules for these eagerly anticipated tours as soon as possible.”

Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary, added: “The BCCI and ECB are working closely to finalise the schedule as we move towards the resumption of cricket. The India-England series is one of the most anticipated contests in world cricket. The two teams compete hard on the field and provide some riveting moments.

After the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) handed out a 16-page SOP to the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises for the 13th edition of the tournament, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have decided against allowing family members to accompany players to the UAE at least for the initial phase of the tournament.

As per the SOPs issued by the BCCI, families travelling have been strictly asked to remain in the bio-bubble and they would not be able to move out or meet anyone who isn’t part of the bio-secure environment and hence the franchise has decided against accommodating family members, at least for now.

The BCCI’s SOP also force franchises to limit their squad to 24 players, which will see the likes of Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, drop one player each from the team.

As per a report in TOI, CSK players will gather in Chennai on August 19 and will start preparations for the cash-rich tournament after landing in Dubai. They will be hosted by a hotel near the iconic Burj Khalifa after being taken by a chartered flight from India to the UAE.

"At least for the initial phase, the families won't be travelling with the players. No commercial flights are being allowed to fly out so CSK have to arrange for a chartered flight," a source told TOI.

Players will remain in a seven-day isolation before the resumption of training and will undergo four COVID-19 tests. Everyone has to come out COVID-19 negative in their tests in India and the UAE.

The IPL 2020 is set to kickstart from September 19 with the final scheduled on November 10.

"At least for the initial phase, the families won't be travelling with the players. No commercial flights are being allowed to fly out so CSK have to arrange for a chartered flight," a source told TOI. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has received and ‘in principle’ government approval to shift the much-talked-about Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with all eight franchises already preparing by initiating quarantine and COVID-19 testing protocols for players and support staff.

As per a report in PTI, a permission in writing is due to come any time in the next week days as IPL 2020 gears up to be hosted by the UAE.

"We have got the approval in principle to go ahead and the papers will be landing anytime," a top source told PTI.

As mandated by the BCCI, most of the franchises are set to leave for the UAE after August 20 while three-time IPL winners Chennai Supers Kings looking to leave the base on August 22. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have quarantined their domestic players at their base.

Some of the franchises are arranging COVID-19 tests for their players in their respective cities before they head for departure bases, i.e Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru, for the UAE.

"It's always good if they have a PCR-Test done and land with a negative report. Then they can have two teats done 24 hours apart as the BCCI SOP mentions before we fly to the UAE," a senior franchise official said on conditions of anonymity.

"While two tests are mandatory, most franchises will have at least four tests done before leaving India," he added.

The players and support staff have been allowed to travel with their families only if all of them remain in the bio-bubble, as per BCCI’s SOP for IPL 2020. However, as per the report, players across teams are not too eager due to strict quarantine rules.

"I have a five-year-old and I can't risk travelling with my family in this situation, health safety is paramount," a senior player said.

A couple of franchises will be taking up to 60 people, including full-fledged medical teams for daily health check-ups and the mandated COVID-19 testing of players every fifth day.

"The BCCI has said every fifth day testing in UAE but if franchises want, they can ramp up the rate. As we have said earlier, any upgrade on the SOP is welcome. However, there is very less chance of the quarantine period getting reduced (from the mandatory six days)," a senior BCCI official said.

The heads of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia (CA) will be connecting virtually to discuss the hosting of two T20 World Cups in the next two years when the ICC's all-powerful board meets on Friday.

The decision will also be impacted by the stand of the two boards on the next ICC chairman, the nomination process of which is yet to be announced formally.

It is expected that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah along with CA's Earl Eddings and Nick Hockley will reach a consensus on the hosting of 2021 and 2022 editions.

"The main agenda of the meeting is scheduling of ICC tournaments including the women's ODI World Cup in New Zealand early next year. It is expected that some decisions will be taken," an ICC Board member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The ICC World T20 which was scheduled to be held in Australia from October 18 this year was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making way for the cash rich Indian Premier League, to be held from September 19 in the United Arab Emirates.

It is expected that Cricket Australia will like to host the T20 World Cup in October 2021 as it had already started preparations and wouldn't like to wait for two years but BCCI also doesn't want to forego its right to host the tournament in 2021.

"The BCCI was originally scheduled to host the T20 World Cup in 2021 and they would like to go ahead. Another reason being, hosting a T20 World Cup in 2022 and then a 50 over global event within a gap of just one year. It would be an overkill," another ICC board member said.

However for Cricket Australia, it also has a few points in its favour.

"The ICC website states that those who have booked match tickets for Australia World T20 event should wait till further announcement. The reason being CA wants to host the event next year," he said.

It is also learnt that there is a good chance that the eight-team Women's ODI World Cup in New Zealand in February-March 2021 will go ahead as per schedule.

"Yes, the qualification tournament is yet to be finished and since every country's Covid situation is different, that is one headache that the ICC has. Going by health safety issues, New Zealand is one of the best performing nations globally," he said.

West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen has been ruled of the impending Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 after he missed his flight from Jamaica to Barbados. Due to travel restrictions in Trinidad due to COVID-19 pandemic, the scheduled chartered flight on Monday was the only way he could enter Trinidad and now will be missing an entire month of cricket action.

Allen, who was retained by franchise St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the CPL draft, was due to reach Barbados before boarding the charter to Trinidad. However, the Windies all-rounder was late to reach the airport and missed the flight.

"Unfortunately, there was some confusion with his understanding of the flight details and he missed the flight. We explored all possibilities, but due to the pandemic and travel restrictions in Trinidad, the charter flight on Monday was the only way he could enter the country," ESPNCricinfo quoted Allen's agent as saying.
