David Silva will not get the send-off he deserves in his final home appearance for Manchester City against Real Madrid at an empty Etihad but a fairytale ending could still be in store for the "Magician".

Silva has won 11 domestic trophies in his golden decade in Manchester and is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's finest imports.

But despite City's domestic supremacy they have yet to get their hands on the Champions League trophy.

The 34-year-old Spaniard was one of the first star names to join the Abu-Dhabi-backed revolution in Manchester.

Now he has a final shot at the one major trophy missing from his impressive collection, which includes winners' medals with Spain from the World Cup and two European championships.

City, who have never been crowned European champions, on Friday host 13-time winners Madrid, leading 2-1 after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in February.

The winners will progress to the latter stages of the competition, scheduled to take place in Lisbon later this month.

Kevin De Bruyne, who has had the joy of playing alongside Silva for the past five years, says his teammate will leave a huge hole when he leaves the Etihad.

"He is going to be a big miss," said the Belgium midfielder. "It would be great if we could win the Champions League so it could end well for him."

De Bruyne believes Silva is one of the best players to have graced the Premier League.

"You can always debate who is (number) one but when you play with him you can appreciate what he does day-in, day-out," he said.

<h2>- Special player -</h2>

&nbsp;

City boss Pep Guardiola coached Lionel Messi and Silva's long-time international teammates Andres Iniesta and Xavi at Barcelona but claims "in small spaces, in the pockets, I never saw a player like him (Silva)".

Finishing the job against Madrid would be particularly sweet for a player who rarely received the same fanfare as players such as Xavi, Iniesta and Sergio Ramos in his homeland for Spain's three international tournament triumphs between 2008 and 2012.

Silva is the fourth-highest goalscorer in Spain's history and sixth for all-time appearances, but his decision to join City rather than make the move to Madrid or Barcelona when leaving Valencia a decade ago made him easier to overlook for many in Spain.

"If he had gone to Barcelona everyone would be saying he is one of the best players in the world," said Roberto Mancini, City manager when Silva arrived in Manchester.

Silva's selfless style and quiet demeanour have also contributed to a lack of individual awards but he has always been appreciated by his teammates.

“He’s someone who doesn’t talk much, but he leads by example," added Guardiola. "He is such a competitor."

Although City may now be more reliant on De Bruyne's brilliance than Silva's skill, the Spaniard's experience of winning some of the game's biggest prizes could be crucial against a side boasting a host of four-time Champions League winners.

Since football's restart in June, City have won all eight games in which they have scored the first goal by a combined score of 33-1, including a 4-0 rout of Liverpool, but have lost all three when they conceded first.

Two away goals in Madrid mean there is no onus on City to open themselves up and expose a shaky defence, which cost them nine defeats and their Premier League crown.

It is not Guardiola's way to defend with men behind the ball, but they can protect themselves by keeping possession.

There are few better at that than Silva and City need one more masterclass before he draws the curtain on his time in Manchester.

Silva has last shot at European glory before Man City goodbye

Real Madrid would love nothing more than for Eden Hazard to burst into life against Manchester City on Friday but their march to the La Liga title has shown they know very well how to win without him.&nbsp;

Faced with the challenge of overturning a 2-1 first-leg defeat in February, a lesser Madrid might have been looking to Hazard for inspiration as they try to shock Pep Guardiola's side and reach the Champions League quarter-finals.&nbsp;

"We know we have to go there and win," said Zinedine Zidane after the first leg.

Back in England, where he forged his reputation as one of the world's most lethal attackers, and up against arguably the favourites to win the tournament, the stage is set again for Hazard to rescue what has been a nightmare opening year in Spain.&nbsp;

Yet few are billing this as a duel between Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne, Belgium's two brightest talents, or tieing Madrid's progress to the mast of a decisive Hazard intervention, the like of which Madrid's fans are yet to witness this season.&nbsp;

"We know the team wins with Eden," said Zidane in February. "That's why we signed him, he's a great player."

But the team have won without him too. The reality is Madrid have learned not to miss the player they signed for 100 million euros last year and who said at his unveiling at the Santiago Bernabeu he wanted to become the club's next Galactico.&nbsp;

There is still time, but Hazard's Madrid career so far has been a series of setbacks and comebacks, with only glimpses in between of those mazey runs, surges of acceleration or goals. In 21 appearances, Hazard has scored only once this season.&nbsp;

He may not be fully fit on Friday given the 11 games since La Liga resumed saw Hazard start some games, come off early in others and miss a handful altogether.&nbsp;

He was absent from the pictures published by the club on Wednesday of the morning's training session at Valdebebas.

Zidane has been vague on the 29-year-old's fitness issues but what is clear is the operation in March does not appear to have completely fixed his troublesome right ankle.&nbsp;

When he has been fit enough to play, Hazard has struck an unmissable chemistry with Karim Benzema and their promising partnership could wreak havoc in City's creaky backline or, further ahead, take Madrid to another level next term.&nbsp;

Zidane has admitted his team's La Liga success was built almost entirely on their defence but there is room for improvement up front, where Benzema's brilliant form has often made up for a lack of fluency and chances.&nbsp;

“Even as someone who prefers exciting, attacking football, the defence is the most important thing right now,” Zidane said last month.

In that sense, Madrid's strengths are far more threatened in Manchester by the absence of the suspended Sergio Ramos than they would be boosted by the return of Hazard, who could be kept on the bench if the conservative Zidane prefers a late push to all-out attack from the start.&nbsp;

There would be no better moment for peak Hazard to emerge but this is not the Madrid he joined last year, desperate and dead on their feet, at the end of a chastening season without silverware and without encouragement.&nbsp;

Zidane has led the transformation and he maintains complete faith, at least in public, that Hazard will come good at Madrid eventually. For now at least, it is more hope than expectation.&nbsp;

Another chance for Hazard but Madrid can beat City without him

Sprint legend Usain Bolt Thursday claimed he wasn't given "a fair chance" to prove himself in Australia's A-League after a failed attempt to become a professional footballer.

The Jamaican, an eight-time Olympic champion, tried out with the Central Coast Mariners in 2018 after quitting athletics, hoping to fulfil a childhood dream to become a soccer player.

His quest garnered worldwide attention, which intensified when he scored two goals in a pre-season friendly.&nbsp;

But his abilities were questioned, notably by former Ireland striker Andy Keogh who said he had a "touch like a trampoline", and contract talks failed.

Bolt told Australia's Channel Nine television network: "I think I didn't get a fair chance.

"I didn't do it how I wanted to do it, but it's something I think I would've been good at," he added.

"But it's just one of those things you miss out on and just have to move on."

Bolt, the 100m and 200m world record holder, had previously tried out with clubs in Germany, South Africa and Norway.

Asked if he had any regrets about his attempted career shift, he replied: "I do think about it sometimes that it didn't work out the way that I wanted it to, because football is something that I love.

"The fact that it didn't work out I do think about it, but as I said, it's one of those things you've got to move past."

Earlier this year, Bolt and his partner Kasi Bennett became parents to a baby girl and he said he was content with life, despite disappointment at not becoming a footballer.

"Being a parent now, it's different. It gives you a sense of accomplishment so I'm really happy and just excited to go on this journey," he told the broadcaster.

"It's been just about living it and experiencing it day by day."

Former Europa League winners Manchester United booked a quarter-final spot in the tournament after their second-string side laboured to a 2-1 home win over LASK Linz on Wednesday to seal a 7-1 aggregate rout of the Austrian side.

United’s reward is a clash with FC Copenhagen in Cologne on Monday after the Danish side beat Istanbul Basaksehir 3-0 at home earlier on Wednesday to wipe out a 1-0 first-leg deficit.

United, who won Europe’s second-tier club competition in 2017, appeared to be going through the motions and fell behind to a spectacular Philipp Wiesinger goal in the 55th minute before Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial replied.

Having been virtually assured of progress after a 5-0 win at LASK in March, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded a below-strength side at Old Trafford and they looked completely at sea for an hour.

Solskjaer said the fringe players needed a run out to stay in shape for United’s trip to Germany, where the latter stages of the competiton will be played in a mini-tournament, as his side aim to end the season on a high note.

“We learned that the players need to play to keep that sharpness,” the Norwegian told BT Sport.

“Some of these lads haven’t played for a while and it showed. Some haven’t played since lockdown. For me, it was a good exercise. It’s job done, minutes under the belt and on to (face) Copenhagen.”

United found themselves under pressure early on as LASK defender Andres Andrade hit the bar in the 10th minute and Husein Balic fired just wide from the ensuing scramble before striker Marko Raguz twice came close in a one-sided first half.

LASK took a deserved lead when United half cleared a corner and Wiesinger gave home goalkeeper Sergio Romero no chance with a screaming first-time shot from 25 metres into the top corner.

Falling behind finally spurred United into action and Lingard equalised after a defence-splitting pass by Juan Mata left him with time and space to steer his shot past goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

Late substitute Martial completed United’s comeback on the night in the 88th minute when his close-range shot trickled over the line after squeezing through Schlager’s legs.

Romero spared United more blushes when he kept out a Raguz back-heel from two metres with a superb reflex save deep into stoppage time.

The last eight will be played in four German cities as part of the mini-tournament, with the final on Aug. 21 in Cologne.

The Olympic rings monument installed in Tokyo Bay for the 2020 Summer Games was temporarily removed for maintenance on Thursday and will return in December when Japan heads into the final stretch of preparations for the resheduled event.

The Olympics were pushed back by a year in March due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Thursday would have been Day 14 of the Games.

The monument, which was installed seven months ago and stands 15.3m tall and 32.6m wide, will be cleaned and undergo a safety inspection before being re-installed.

“Since it will be not on display for four months, it is kind of sad,” Atsushi Yanashimizu, Planning Director at Tokyo Metropolitan Government, told Reuters on Thursday.

“But I consider in a positive way that we will make sure it will be clean and securely maintained when it comes back in four months.”

When the rings are re-installed in December organisers will hope to have a better idea as to whether the Games can go ahead in Tokyo next year amid continuing concerns about COVID-19.

Organisers have said succesfully hosting the Games can be a positive symbol for the world as it deals with the pandemic.

“By delivering the Games successfully in Tokyo we strongly hope that we can create a legacy that is in the history of mankind,” Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto told Reuters in an interview last month.

Manchester City have signed defender Nathan Ake from Bournemouth on a five-year deal, the Premier League club announced on Wednesday.

Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed but British media reported City paid Bournemouth 40 million pounds ($52 million) to sign the 25-year-old with an additional 1 million pounds to be paid in add-ons.

"City have been the best side in England over the course of the last decade," Ake said in a statement. "Coming here is a dream for me. This is a top side full of world class players.

“Pep (Guardiola) is a manager admired across the world – what he’s done in the game speaks for itself. The success he’s had is unbelievable and the style of football he plays really appeals to me.”

Bournemouth were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season and Ake is one of their players who was expected to leave to continue playing in the top flight.

The Netherlands international, who has also played as a left back, came through Chelsea’s youth system and was initially loaned out to Bournemouth before he signed permanently for the south coast club in June 2017.

Ake had loan spells at Watford and Reading before making 121 appearances for Bournemouth across all competitions, scoring 11 times and playing more minutes in the Premier League than any other player at the club.

City, who finished runners-up in the Premier League to Liverpool, are looking to strengthen their central defence as Guardiola aims to improve his squad for a title challenge next season.

Ake is City’s second recruit in the off season after the club signed Spanish winger Ferran Torres from Valencia on a five-year contract on Tuesday in a deal reported by British media to be worth 23 million euros ($27 million).

LeBron James has said he has no qualms about losing U.S. President Donald Trump as a viewer as the Los Angeles Lakers forward defended NBA players for kneeling in protest before games.

NBA teams have been protesting against racial injustice before games, with players wearing Black Lives Matter t-shirts, bowing their heads and kneeling when the U.S. national anthem is played.

Trump told Fox News that he switches off the game when he sees players kneel, describing it as “disgraceful” and “not acceptable”.

“I really don’t think the basketball community are sad about losing his viewership, him viewing the game,” James told reporters after the Lakers lost 105-86 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday.

“I think our game is in a beautiful position and we have fans all over the world.

“Our fans not only love the way we play the game, we try to give it back to them with our commitment to the game but also respect what else we try to bring to the game and acknowledging what’s right and what’s wrong.”

Athletes from around the world have united behind anti-racism protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, while in police custody in Minneapolis in May, with James being one of the NBA’s leading voices for social justice.

James added that he hoped Americans “no matter the race” could see the leadership the country had at the helm and urged them to make their vote count to bring about change when the U.S. goes to the polls in the Nov. 3 presidential election.

“November is right around the corner and it’s a big moment for us as Americans,” James, who started a group with other black celebrities in June to work to prevent the suppression of the African-American vote, added.

“If we continue to talk about, ‘We want better, we want change’, we have an opportunity to do that.

“But the game will go on without his eyes on it. I can sit here and speak for all of us that love the game of basketball, we could (not) care less.”

Ahead of the much-awaited round of 16 second-leg encounter, Manchester City defender Aymerrric Laporte has said that the Blues have unfinished business in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/uefa-champions-league">UEFA Champions League</a> while adding that the coveted trophy is the missing piece from the club’s growing silverware collection.

Man City have dominated English football in the last decade and more so after Pep Guardiola took the charge as manager of the club. However, they finished second to Liverpool in the Premier League this season and are yet to add the Champions League to their trophy cabinet.

“City have unfinished business in the Champions League, we have been talking about it for a long time, it’s the thing we are missing,” Laporte told Spanish newspaper AS on Thursday.

“Last year we won four trophies in the same season but couldn’t win the Champions League, so if it’s our turn this year, perfect.”

<h2>Man City have all the ingredients to do great things: Laporte</h2>

Manchester City were knocked out from the quarter-finals in 2019 on away goals after VAR ruled out a last-gasp winner. In 2017, they were beaten on away goals by AS Monaco in the last 16.&nbsp;

“I don’t know what we’ve been doing wrong as the team has been the same in the last few years. Away goals have been key. Last year Tottenham scored the same number of goals as us but eliminated us,” added Laporte.

“We have all the ingredients to do great things. The team is really up for it, we don’t have to change much, we just need a little more luck. We have lacked that final spark which I’m sure we’ll find soon.”

Man City have a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid ahead of Friday’s second-leg tie at the Etihad Stadium and will be without ace striker Sergio Aguero. Whereas, the Spanish outfit will be missing skipper Sergio Ramos, who was sent off in the first-leg.&nbsp;

“Everyone knows Aguero, he’s an important player to be missing just like theirs. All the goals that he has scored and the career he’s had since he was young speak for themselves,” added Laporte.

Australian players are gearing up for the limited-overs series against England scheduled to be played in September. While it has been a long break from cricket due to COVID-19 pandemic, international Aussie cricketers have a packed schedule with the tour to the UK and then the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.&nbsp;

While the players will be back in action soon with a 26-man preliminary squad already announced for the England series, all eyes will be on the bowling attack comprising some of the top bowlers in world cricket, at the moment.&nbsp;

In an exclusive interview with WION's Subhayan Chakraborty, Australian pacer Kane Richardson, who is also set to be seen in action for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2020, talked about the forced break from cricket, limited-overs series against England, RCB, Indian Premier League, captaincy of Aaron Finch and Virat Kohli and much more.&nbsp;

The break due to COVID-19 has put cricketers out of action for nearly five months now. However, for Kane the break came in as an opportunity to press the reboot button and now with the resumption of training with South Australia, the right-arm pacer is looking to get back to his peak ahead of the UK tour.&nbsp;

“The break from playing has been refreshing to be honest. We have come back strong and are well into pre-season training with our states. As a bowler our loads are not at their peak but we are working towards getting ready for a tour of the UK in a few weeks. We will have some time in the UK before matches start. We have done a lot of work in pre-season, we will be ready,” Kane Richardson told WION in an exclusive interview.&nbsp;

Kane was roped in for a whopping Rs 4 crore and is looking to make a mark straightaway with the white-ball. When asked what are the similarities betwee Kohli and Finch as captains, Kane said that the hunger to win sets them apart as leader while terming them both as ‘inspirational players’. “They are both (Kohli and Finch) incredibly driven captains and inspirational players. It is going to be an amazing experience as you say. Hopefully our batters make the bowlers lives easy,” the Aussie pacer observed. Before concluding, Kane said he can’t wait to get back to the field and give fans something to look forward after such a tough phase. He further said that IPL provide a lot of joy to many and now it is their duty to play the best cricket and put a smile to fans’ face. “I know all the players can’t wait to get back and give the fans something to look forward to after such a tough year for everyone. The IPL can provide a lot of joy to so many, it’s up to us to play our best and give them some great cricket to watch,” Kane signed off.

Australian ace Nick Kyrgios on Thursday dropped a massive hint that he will skip the much-awaited French Open as he said chances of him travelling to Europe in the year 2020 were “slim to none”. Kyrgios has already pulled out of US Open in New York due to COVID-19 pandemic while world number two Rafael Nadal following suit.

Kyrgios, who is one of the biggest drawcards, said he wasn’t surprised to see Nadal opting out of US Open but said that the Spaniard was likely “eyeing the French Open” scheduled to be held in late September.&nbsp;

"And if I was to play I'd probably definitely rather go to Europe (than America) at this time of year for sure with everything going on," Kyrgios added to Channel Nine television from his Canberra base.

It's a very slim chance I'll play in Europe. Almost slim to none to be honest," he said.

"I'm going to use this (time) to stay home, train, be with my family, be with my friends and I'm just going to act responsibly, and wait till I think there's better circumstances to play."

Kyrgios went on to cast doubt on Australian Open 2021, scheduled in January, with host city Melbourne battling another outbreak that has triggered a lockdown and curfew in the city.

"I'm not too sure the Australian Open will be going ahead as it did at the start of the year with the pandemic in Melbourne," he said.

"It's sad times in Melbourne so I'm not too sure if the Australian Open will go on."

Kyrgios has been extremely vocal in his criticism of some of the top players, who participated at Novak Djokovic’s ill-fated Adria Tour exhibition.&nbsp;

"Their behaviour throughout this time, I don't think has been great at all. Especially coming from some of our leaders of the sport," Kyrgios said.

"On top of our game they're supposed to be setting an example for the rest of the tour, and them coming back at me with behaviour that I've done on court, I mean it just shows their intellectual level to be honest.

"Putting lives at risk, it's not really comparable."

The Madrid Open tennis tournament has been cancelled due to fresh outbreaks of coronavirus in the region, organisers confirmed on Tuesday, raising doubts around the upcoming US and French Opens.

Originally scheduled for May, the postponed Madrid tournament was scheduled to take place on the clay courts at Caja Magica between September 12 and 20.

"We share in the disappointment that the Mutua Madrid Open will not be able to take place this year," said Andrea Gaudenzi, the ATP Chairman, in a statement.

The tournament was expected to boast a stellar field, including world number two and five-time champion Rafael Nadal, and would have been a key warm-up event two weeks before the start of the French Open.

The Italian Open is due to go ahead in Rome in the week leading up to the grand slam at Roland Garros but it remains to be seen how other competitions react.

Before then, hard-court events are planned later this month in Lexington and New York ahead of the US Open at Flushing Meadows, which is due to start on August 31.

After a rise in coronavirus cases in Spain, the regional government of Madrid recommended on Saturday that the Madrid Open be called off, with its cancellation duly confirmed on Tuesday.

Recent COVID-19 outbreaks in Madrid had caused concern around maintaining the safety of players, staff and fans, despite daily cases of the virus falling dramatically in Spain through most of June and July.

There have been over 1,500 positive cases a day in the country over the past week and, in total, Spain has recorded more than 28,000 deaths, according to official figures.

Tennis has been slower than other sports to restart, with the amount of travel required from players and their support teams considered particularly problematic.

The Palermo Ladies Open became the first official Tour event to take place since early March when the main draw began in Sicily on Monday.

However one unnamed player was forced to withdraw after testing positive for coronavirus, organisers confirmed on Saturday.

"We have followed Ferran's progress closely and have been very impressed," said City director of football Txiki Begiristain.

"He is young and still developing, but his technical qualities are exactly what we are looking for in a winger. He is quick, direct, can create space with one movement and is capable of producing match-winning moments."

Torres can play on either wing and operate through the middle, with pace and an ability to beat players his main attributes.

He made 44 appearances for Valencia last season, scoring six goals.

Coup! Manchester City sign winger Ferran Torres from Valencia

Paul Stirling and captain Andrew Balbirnie both scored hundreds as Ireland completed a shock seven-wicket win over world champions England in the third one-day international at Southampton on Tuesday.

Stirling made 142 and Balbirnie 113, the pair putting on 264 for the second wicket as Ireland chased a target of 329.

When both were out in quick succession, however, it looked like Ireland might falter but Kevin O'Brien -- whose brilliant hundred set up Ireland's stunning win over England at the 2011 World Cup in Bangalore, helped see them to victory with just one ball to spare.

Ireland's win was all the more impressive as they had lost the first two matches in a three-game series after making lowly totals of 172 and 212-9.

Earlier England captain Eoin Morgan, a former Ireland batsman, made 106 against his native country.

But with England on course for an impregnable total, they three wickets for 13 runs as they slumped from 190-3 to 203-6.

Ireland's victory, which rounded off the first ODI series since the coronavirus lockdown, also gave them 10 points in the new World Cup Super League, which will determine qualification for the 2023 50-over showpiece in India.

<h2>Brief scores:</h2>

England 328, 50 overs (E Morgan 106, T Banton 58, D Willey 51; C Young 3-53)

Ireland 329-3, 49.5 overs (P Stirling 142, A Balbirnie 113)

Result: Ireland win by seven wickets

Series: England win three-match series 2-1&nbsp;

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a strict 16-page Standard Operating Protocol (SOP), in possession of WION, to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL)</a> franchises that need to be followed by everyone involved in the cash-rich tournament, scheduled to be held from September 19 to November 10 in the UAE, subject to Indian government clearance.

Regular testing and ban on the usage of saliva comes automatically into the scenario to curb the spread of COVID-19. Separate hotels for franchises and social distancing norms in dressing room will be a commonality throughout the course of IPL 2020. Interestingly, the BCCI has gone paper-less and introduced electronic team sheets while recommending virtual team meetings.&nbsp;

All the franchises in IPL have been asked to appoint a team doctor, who will ensure bio-secure guidelines in the 13th edition of the tournament. The medical team will also be responsible for obtaining a complete medical travel history (since March 2020) of all the players and staff involved in the tournament.&nbsp;

Interestingly, families have not been banned from travelling to the UAE but everyone will need to follow the protocols in place for players and staff.

Breach of any Bio-Secure Environment protocols by players and team support staff will be punishable under the IPL Code of Conduct Rules.

<h2>Key takeaways from BCCI issued SOPs for IPL 2020:</h2>

The Bio-Secure Environment measures will be in place throughout the IPL 2020 season and cover the following environments:

• Hotels • Training sessions • Matches • Transportation

The stadium Bio-Secure Environment will be divided into the following zones:

• Zone 1 – Players and Match Official Area (PMOA) and Field of Play (FOP)

• Zone 2 – Inner Zone – All operational areas within the stadium complex

• Zone 3 – Outer Zone – The area outside the stadium complex but within the boundary walls

<h2>Preparation </h2>

a. All franchises should appoint a Team Doctor who will be responsible for ensuring that the Bio-Secure Environment medical guidelines are implemented within the team for the entire duration of IPL 2020 season.

b. The franchise medical team should obtain a complete medical and travel history (since 1st March 2020) of all players and team support staff at least 2 weeks before the scheduled departure to UAE. This will be done via an online questionnaire along with a daily temperature logging and symptom checker going live 2 weeks before the team’s assembly.

c. Wearing a triple layered mask in public places is mandatory for all players and team support staff.

d. Consider using chartered flights from India to UAE for the players and team support staff. Follow seat spacing and social distancing protocols on the flight.

e. All passengers arriving at UAE airports are required to carry a negative COVID-19 PCR test report issued no more than 96 hours before arrival in the UAE. Additionally, all inbound

<h2>Hotel </h2>

a. All franchise teams will be put up in different hotels.

b. The franchise team members must respect and follow the protocols of Bio-Security Environment to maintain its sanctity.

c. Team members must be allotted rooms in a separate wing of the hotel that has a separate centralised air conditioning (AC) unit than the rest of the hotel.

d. Hotel rooms must be serviced prior to players and staff occupying them.

e. After the third negative test, team members may be allowed to meet each other within the Bio-Secure Environment. However, wearing a face mask and social distancing protocols must be followed at all times.

f. Food should be ordered in the individual rooms and use of common dining areas should be avoided to prevent cross infection and coming in contact with other hotel guests.

<h2>Dressing Room </h2>

a. It is important for players and staff to socially distance while in the dressing room.

b. The Bio-Secure Environment means only essential staff will be on site and no members of the public will be allowed. Therefore there will be more vacant areas at the stadium and hence the dressing room does not have to remain within the traditional area.

c. Venue Cricket Operation teams should consider using appropriate areas beyond the normal dressing room.

d. Hand hygiene is important, and all should have access to hand sanitiser and / or soap and water.

e. Hand touch sites should be identified and cleaned on a regular basis.

f. The dressing room, or rooms, should be appropriately deep cleaned regularly.

g. Where available, Scalene Hypercharge Corona Canon (Shycocan), a device that has the ability to neutralise 99.9% of the coronavirus that might be floating in the air in closed spaces, will be installed.

<h2>MATCH DAYS</h2>

i. On the day of the match

• All players and staff should have completed their daily questionnaire and had a temperature check.

Master batsman Steve Smith says Australia have “unfinished business” in England, with the achievement of retaining the Ashes last year tempered by defeat in the final test that levelled the series 2-2.

Tim Paine’s Australia retained the urn in England for the first time since 2001, earning a hero’s reception back home, but the loss at The Oval left a sour taste for Smith.

“To know that we’d got the Ashes back was pretty special,” he said in comments published on Cricket Australia’s website.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t win them which is something I’d still like to do.

“From my personal perspective, I think it’s unfinished business.

“It’s great to retain the Ashes but it just doesn’t sit right with me when you don’t win it.

“So I probably left at the end of the fifth test (feeling) more disappointed than a sense of achievement.”

Smith was awarded the Compton-Miller Medal as player of the series after scoring 774 runs at an average of 110.57 from four tests.

He was forced to miss the third test with concussion after being struck by a Jofra Archer bouncer at Lord’s which sent a shudder through the Australian camp.

Smith, who scored 211 in the fourth test at Old Trafford to ensure Australia retained the urn, said he had no problem watching the replay of the Archer delivery that felled him.

“I’ve seen it a few times. It’s not hard to watch,” he said.

Australia will look to retain the Ashes at home in 2021/22 and the 31-year-old Smith must wait until 2023 for another chance to beat England away.

“Hopefully I get another crack at it, we’ll see how we go,” he said. “I’m getting a bit old now.

“But it’s certainly something to strive for, that’s for sure.”

Softer tyres and hotter temperatures will pose a fresh test for Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone on Sunday after the Formula One championship leader won last weekend’s British Grand Prix on three wheels and a flat.

Tyre supplier Pirelli had always planned a change of compounds for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, second of two at the circuit where the championship began in 1950, but there will be more scrutiny now.

Hamilton’s win after a last lap tyre failure will go down as one of his most dramatic and came after he completed more than three quarters of the race on a single set.

“One step softer is going to be a challenge for us all and no doubt will move us all to at least a two-stop,” the six-times world champion, now 30 points clear of team mate Valtteri Bottas, said last Sunday.

“Obviously our cars are a lot quicker this year, we’re using the same tyres as last year, they (Pirelli) weren’t able to develop a better tyre to deal with the forces for this season, so it’s going to be a serious challenge I think.”

Team boss Toto Wolff agreed: “The hotter conditions brought the field closer together last week and the softer tyres will mean more pit stops and more variability with strategy, so we can expect a good fight.”

Hamilton has won the last three races, out of four so far in this COVID-19 affected season, and will start as favourite again.

If he finishes on the podium the Briton will equal the Formula One record of 155 set by Ferrari great Michael Schumacher.

Another win would leave him just three short of Schumacher’s record 91.

Mercedes have won all four races in dominant fashion, with Bottas triumphant in the Austrian opener last month, and rivals recognise the champions are in a league of their own.

They would have had a one-two on Sunday had Bottas not suffered a tyre failure a lap before Hamilton and plunged from second to 11th.

“Maybe you find a tenth, or one-and-a-half, OK and we are a bit closer — but it’s not close enough,” said Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

“You have to be realistic. I mean you can dream, and you can hope, but I think it’s way more important to be realistic because that’s how you move forward,” added the Dutch driver, who finished second on Sunday.

Ferrari will be hoping young Monegasque Charles Leclerc can again get more out of the car than seemed possible after finishing third last weekend.

Nico Hulkenberg looks set for a second chance to start for Racing Point as stand-in for Mexican Sergio Perez, in quarantine after testing positive for the new coronavirus. The German was sidelined by a power unit problem last time.

Softer tyres throw up a fresh challenge for Hamilton

Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said he still intends to play at the French Open next month and remains hopeful it will go ahead, despite withdrawing from the US Open due to coronavirus concerns.

Nadal also insisted the US Open will not carry an asterisk without its defending men's champion, even if he admitted it will take place under "special circumstances", with several top players expected to sit out.

The 34-year-old Spaniard's withdrawal was confirmed shortly after the Madrid Open was cancelled on Tuesday, with a rise in coronavirus cases in Europe raising doubts around other events, including the French Open, which is due to start in Paris on September 27.&nbsp;

Nadal, who would be going for a record-extending 13th title at Roland Garros, was asked if he thinks the tournament will go ahead.&nbsp;

"I trust it will yes, it is in my mind and I am preparing for it," said the 34-year-old in a briefing with international media on Wednesday.

"But we have to wait for events, to see how everything evolves because it is true that in recent weeks the situation seems to have worsened a little. But my hope and my intention would be to be there if conditions allow."

Nadal also explained his decision to pull out of the US Open. "My heart says today is not the moment to take long travels without knowing exactly what can and cannot happen.&nbsp;

"My decision is to stay at home in Mallorca where the situation is good, it looks under control here, and to wait for future opportunities."

<h2>- 'Special circumstances' -</h2>

Women's world number one Ashleigh Barty has also chosen not to compete in New York, where a depleted entry list in both the men's and women's draws looks inevitable.&nbsp;

Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are all still due to play.&nbsp;

"The tournament is still big, it's a Grand Slam," Nadal said. "I am not arrogant enough to say the tournament is not big because I am not playing. There will be important players.&nbsp;

"Of course it's a tournament under special circumstances but still a Grand Slam and the winner will feel like the winner of a Grand Slam. It's true it will be under special circumstances with a lot of important players not travelling there."&nbsp;

Nadal added: "My words can have repercussions so it is difficult to say if it is the right decision or not, for some players it will be right for others not.&nbsp;

"I respect a lot the amount of work and positive intentions of the ATP and USTA (United States Tennis Association) to try to come back to the tour. I have taken my decision so you know my thoughts but I respect there are other players in different situations and they need to play because they have financial problems and need to earn money after a few months without income."&nbsp;

Nadal also said lessons need to be learned after the "mistake" of the ill-fated Adria Tour in June, which was organised by Djokovic and led to several players, including the Serb, testing positive for coronavirus.&nbsp;

"I think most of the players want the best for the world and for people. Of course there was a mistake in the tour organised in Serbia and Croatia but mistakes are normal when you face a situation you haven't faced before," Nadal said.&nbsp;

"The players need to make decisions but I am not saying mine is the right one. Every decision can be right or wrong. We are facing unpredictable situations.&nbsp;

"I really hope people learn from the Adria Tour and we continue in the best way possible."&nbsp;

The World Health Organization said Wednesday it was "unrealistic" to expect large crowds at sports events this year in countries suffering from community-level transmission of the new coronavirus.

WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan said it could be "disastrous" in such circumstances to allow the return of sports matches with tens of thousands of people attending.

Asked in a live WHO social media chat when major sports events could come back, Ryan said it was impossible to predict.

"We don't know," the Irish epidemiologist said.

"Large crowds of 40, 50, 60,000 people -- it's not just the risk of being in the stadium, it's the risk of going to the stadium, the public transport, the bars and the clubs," he explained.

"Imagine all the problems we have now with nightclubs and bars, and you squeeze all of that together into a four- or five-hour experience, where thousands of people go on the same public transport to a venue, get involved in the social aspects before a game, be involved in the game and then all of the social aspects after.

"In the context of community transmission, that could be disastrous."

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2020 European football championships have been postponed until next year, while major football tournaments like Europe's Champions League and the English Premier League have been forced behind closed doors.

"We may have to expect that as things open up, we go from having no-one at the games to maybe 1,000 and 2,000," said Ryan.

"We all want our sport back. We're just going to have to be careful for a good bit longer.

"It's very unrealistic in countries with community transmission that we're going to be seeing large gatherings like that this year.

"Right now, it's hard to see those fully re-opened venues."

There has been a lot of talks surrounding Neymar wanting to leave French club Paris Saint-Germain, however, the Brazilian forward isn’t departing anytime soon and has set his eyes on the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/uefa-champions-league">UEFA Champions League</a> while claiming he is currently in his best form since joining the Ligue 1 side from Barcelona in 2017.

Neymar’s journey in Paris has been struck with injuries and controversies since his 200-million-pound deal while constant speculations that the forward wants to go back to Barcelona. However, with Barcelona president Joseph Maria Bartomeu saying the situation isn’t right to spend heavily on Neymar and that may have helped to mend relationship with his current employers and fans.

"During these three years I have acquired a lot of knowledge," Neymar told PSG's official website. "I have lived through happy moments and difficult ones, especially when the injuries didn't allow me to play.

Football clubs playing in 2020-21 edition of European competitions could be forced to forfeit matches if they are unable to inform UEFA about travel restrictions in place to curb the spread of coronavirus, as per guidelines issues by UEFA.

The European football’s governing body, UEFA said that it would publish a list of known travel restrictions between countries before the draw is made. Additionally, the clubs would have to inform UEFA about any other unknown restrictions at least 48 hours before the draw and if they fail to do so then they will be handed a 3-0 defeat as a result of a forfeited match.

“If a club fails to inform the UEFA administration two days prior to the relevant draw of any restrictions other than those published by UEFA ... the club will be held responsible ... and the match will be declared to be forfeited by the club in question,” the governing body said.

UEFA further said that if a club was draw against an opponent that is not allowed to travel to the respective country then it must find a neutral venue for the home fixture. Failure to propose a suitable alternative venue would force the home club to forfeit the match.

The rules will apply for the qualifying rounds and play-offs of 2020-21 season’s European competitions.

The 2019-20 season’s remaining <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/uefa-champions-league">UEFA Champions League</a> and Europa League round of 16 second-leg matches, that were also postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic in March, are set to be played in the stadiums of home teams.

However, the ‘Final-8’ of Champions League and Europa League, will be played as a mini-tournament in Portugal and Germany respectively.

The England versus Pakistan three-match Test series will see TV umpire alone deciding whether a bowler had over-stepped as the front-foot no-ball technology will be used for the first time on trial basis in Test cricket during series, that started on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the development with the responsibility of calling no-balls now shifting to the TV umpire. The on-field umpires can call on their colleague in the replay booth for additional assistance if they feel a wicket may have been scalped in an illegal delivery.

However, many experts have said that this procedure will be unfair to bowlers given that they may not realise that they are over-stepping and rectify their run-up until it costs them a wicket.

Under the new system, TV umpire will keep an eye on the front foot after each delivery and tell the on-field umpires if an illegal delivery has been bowled.&nbsp;

"Front foot no ball technology to be used in ICC World Test Championship series featuring England and Pakistan, with the support of both teams," the global governing body tweeted Wednesday.

"Performance of the technology in these Tests will be reviewed before any decisions taken on its future use in Test cricket."

The new rule will also avoid situations like when Richard Illingworth called New Zealand’s Doug Bracewell for a no-ball that bowled Aussie batsman Adam Voges during a Test in Wellington. Voges, who was on seven at that time, went on to score a double century.

Selflessness defines a leader in Rohit Sharma's captaincy rulebook and that's why he has no hesitation in calling himself the "least important person" in the Mumbai Indians team, the most successful franchise in IPL's history.

Indian cricket will hit the restart button with the IPL from September 19 in the UAE even as the world continues its frenzied battle to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

The man, who led Mumbai Indians to four titles, knows that as captain, it will not just be about him getting back into the groove after a forced seven-month break.

"I believe in a theory that when you are captain, you are the least important person. Others become more important in the larger scheme of things. It works differently for different leaders but as far as I am concerned, this theory works for me," Rohit told PTI in an exclusive interview.

Suresh Raina recently compared his cool quotient to that of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He prefers to play down the comparison but there is one undeniable similarity between the two -- Rohit can also remain as unfazed as the former India captain in the most difficult of situations.

"Not showing anger is not a conscious effort," he laughs.

"That's a natural instinct that you have and you don't try and be someone that you are not. Try and be yourself all the time," he said.

"You do get angry, lose temper at times but it's important not to show it to your teammates. Hiding your emotions is the most crucial part."

The Indian vice-captain believes that there is "enough time" before the IPL starts and he would slowly build on his strength, stamina and skills during the next one month after the long lay-off.

"Hopefully, the gym will open this week and I can start my indoor (strength training) sessions. Right now, due to Mumbai monsoons, you can't train outdoor. I am planning to write a letter to MCA (on using indoor facilities)," he said.

Having won an Asia Cup in Dubai in 2018, he has a fair idea about what awaits his team next month in terms of conditions.

Rohit said the plan is to build up slowly after being away from his bat for the longest he can remember.

"We have lot of time in our hands...I will be taking it slow. Luckily, I don't think there is any rush that I need to show. We have enough time. I will work on getting back to the ground slowly because the temperature in Dubai is 40 degrees. It's not easy," he said.

"It's the longest gap that I have ever had in my career without holding a bat. It will be a bit challenging. Unless I play, I will not know where I am and how I feel but body is completely fine. I feel physically more strong than ever because of the last four months," Rohit said.

He has consistently been in touch with MI's core team of strategists on conference call discussing the details of the challenge ahead in the UAE, where the IPL will be held in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

"It's a good environment to be in. It's challenging but I love challenges and I want an environment like this. My mind has been relaxed for last five months...,? he said.

"...Your planning changes a lot. Pitches in Dubai are a bit on the slower side. The pitches are not so different from India but yes overhead conditions will be a big factor as you are not always used to playing in 40 degrees which can be a bit of a challenge," he explained.

"As much as we sit and plan things here, it could completely change once we are there and check out the conditions and then think about ideal combinations," he felt.

For him, it's important that youngsters can look up to him and draw confidence.

"You need to give confidence to the younger players, some of them haven't played the IPL before, don't have international exposure. I need to make sure they are in the best zone, not pressurised by the moment and get those little performances from everyone," he said.

Asked about some of the youngsters he is looking forward to seeing this year, the skipper made it clear that he never found naming favourites and comparisons healthy.

"When I was a 20-year-old, trust me I never liked comparisons. Know one thing, you should never pit two young guys against each other. They don't feel good about it.

"It's important that everyone is treated the same and then it's purely up to them as to what they do with their careers and how they take it forward," the easygoing batsman, who has nearly 14,000 international runs, said.

Talking about time away from the game in a lockdown, Rohit spoke about how it helped him reflect on his life outside the rigours of 22 yards.

A life in which he is first and foremost a loving husband and a doting dad.

"I probably understood the importance of family more than ever before. Through the year, through your playing career, they sacrifice so much for you, you are home for a short time and always on the road," he said.

"It was icing on the cake because my daughter (Samaira) is just growing up. It's these years of her life that I don't want to miss. The first step that she takes, the first words spoken.

"Spending so much time with her, playing with her, putting her to sleep, it was pure joy," he concluded.

Hiding your emotions is the most crucial part." The Indian vice-captain believes that there is "enough time" before the IPL starts and he would slowly build on his strength, stamina and skills during the next one month after the long lay-off.
