BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said the Women's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL</a> or the Challenger series, as it is better known, is "very much on", ending speculation about the parent body not having a plan for Harmanpreet Kaur and her team.

The men's IPL will be held between September 19 and November 8 or 10 (final date yet to be locked in) in the UAE due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in India. The women's IPL will also be fit in to the schedule, according to the BCCI chief.

"I can confirm to you that the women's IPL is very much on and we do have a plan in place for the national team also," Ganguly told PTI ahead of the IPL Governing Council meeting later on Sunday.

The BCCI president, who is awaiting a Supreme Court verdict on waiver of the cooling off period to continue in the position, did not divulge details but another senior official privy to the development said that women's Challenger will be held during the last phase of IPL like last year.

"The women's Challenger series is likely to be held between November 1-10 and there could be a camp before that," the source said.

The former India captain also said that the centrally contracted women players will have a camp which has been delayed due to the prevailing situation in the country.

"We couldn't have exposed any of our cricketers -- be it male or female to health risk. It would have been dangerous," Ganguly said.

"The NCA also remained shut because of COVID-19. But we have a plan in place and we will have a camp for women, I can tell you that," he added.

The BCCI's cricket operations team is chalking up a schedule where Indian women are likely to have two full fledged white-ball series against South Africa and the West Indies before playing the ODI World Cup in New Zealand.

David Willey and Sam Billings guided world champions England to a six-wicket win over Ireland at Southampton on Thursday in the first one-day international.

Left-arm paceman Willey, appearing in his first ODI since being left out of England's World Cup-winning squad for Jofra Archer, took a career-best 5-30 as Ireland were dismissed for a modest 172 in a match that marked the return of white-ball cricket from the coronavirus lockdown.

But an unfamiliar-looking England, in the first of a three-match series that launches the new World Cup Super League to determine qualification for the 2023 50-over showpiece in India, slumped to 78-4 at the Ageas Bowl.

Sam Billings, a late injury replacement for Kent team-mate Joe Denly, made 67 not out including 11 fours at better than a run-a-ball.

Together with World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, a former Ireland batsman, he shared an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 96.

Willey took 4-12 as Ireland slumped to 28-5 after losing the toss.

Curtis Campher held firm with an unbeaten 59 on debut.

Together with Andy McBrine (40) he shared a stand of 66 after Ireland were in danger of being dismissed for under 100 at 79-7.&nbsp;

Willey struck with just the fourth ball of the match when Paul Stirling chipped him to Morgan at midwicket.

Ireland were 7-2 when skipper Andy Balbirnie was caught behind driving at Willey.

Gareth Delany hit five fours in his 22 before he struck Willey straight to backward point.

Next ball, the 30-year-old Willey, the son of former England batsman and umpire David Willey, had Lorcan Tucker lbw for a duck to leave Ireland 28-5.

<h2>- Campher carries on -</h2>

&nbsp;

The 21-year-old Campher, a former South Africa youth international qualified for Ireland through his mother, survived the hat-trick delivery and went on to complete an admirable 103-ball fifty.

Kevin O'Brien, whose stunning 50-ball hundred set up a remarkable Ireland win over England during the 2011 World Cup, made 22 before he holed out off leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

McBrine pulled Tom Curran to deep square leg before Willey dismissed last man Craig Young to end the innings.

Willey's return was his best in 47 ODIs, surpassing his 4-34 against Sri Lanka in Cardiff in 2016.

Ireland suffered a blow in the first over of England's reply when Barry McCarthy walked off after bowling five balls with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Off-spinner McBrine, however, had Jonny Bairstow lbw for two before fellow opener Jason Roy fell leg before to Young.

As happened before each of the recent England-West Indies Tests, players from both sides took a knee before play in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign.

This was England's first home ODI since they beat New Zealand in last year's World Cup final at Lord's.

England's red and white-ball fixtures are overlapping in a season cut short by the COVID-19 outbreak and they are maintaining two separate squads, meaning several World Cup winners including Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Archer won't feature against Ireland.

Australia batsman Matthew Wade expects India’s pacemen to make use of the short ball when they tour Down Under but says none will be as effective as New Zealand’s Neil Wagner with the bouncer.

Wade was left battered and bruised after short-pitched assaults by Wagner when New Zealand toured in the last home summer and paid tribute to the fiery left-armer.

“I don’t think anyone in the game has bowled bouncers the way he bowled and been so consistent, and not gotten scored off while also picking up wickets,” Wade told Cricket Australia’s website.

“I think we’ll see it a bit (from India) but I don’t think it will be as effective as Wagner. He’s done it for a long time now.

“To be honest, I’ve never faced a bowler who is so accurate at bowling bouncers.”

Though Wagner made his mark with 17 wickets, including multiple dismissals of Australia’s best batsmen Steve Smith, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, Tim Paine’s side dominated the Black Caps to claim the test series 3-0.

India were more successful in the previous summer, becoming the first Asian team to win a test series in Australia with a 2-1 result.

Australia were without Smith and Warner for that series, who were serving suspensions for ball-tampering.

However, India’s pace attack of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma bowled superbly throughout the series and humbled the hosts’ vaunted trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood on their own pitches.

Wade said Wagner’s angles and accuracy would nonetheless be hard for India’s quicks to reproduce.

“He’s always between your shoulder and the top of your (helmet) peak, or in your armpits,” said Wade.

“They barely had anyone in front of the wicket. They had really cagey fields, catchers in good places, they were trying to take wickets all the time, it wasn’t negative bowling.

“Hats off to him, he bowled unbelievably well.”

Australia meet India in a four-test series starting in Brisbane on Dec. 3.

Australia are looking to get back to action with the upcoming limited-overs series lined up against England after a prolonged three-months break due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, the biggest challenge for the Australian side will be the Test series against India, scheduled to start in December. While preparations are set to take off in the Australian camp for the England series, all eyes will be on the much-awaited series against India with Australia eyeing redemption following the 2-1 defeat in 2018-19 series.&nbsp;

As Australian cricketers gear up to get back in flow, pacer Josh Hazlewood, in an exclusive interview with WION, spoke about a lot of things ranging from the cricket post-COVID-19, England series, Indian Premier League (IPL) ambitions with Chennai Super Kings, playing under MS Dhoni, the much-talked-about India series, injuries and much more.

Subhayan Chakraborty: Josh, how has been life for you in these past three months. Things have been pretty difficult for everyone it feels.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Josh Hazlewood: Thank you for having me. Yes, I think it has been different, it has been difficult. We are just doing our business here. We are training four-five days a week in smaller six-eight a person group, enough for couple of net sessions. The weather here has been pretty good for winter. So I have been getting outdoors quite a fair bit. So all’s going well and we are sort of getting whatever comes our way like the tour to the UK next month.&nbsp;

SC: Australia have a tour to England lined up. Have you been following the England versus the West Indies Test series?

Hazlewood: Yes, I have been watching it a little bit. There’s no such sport going on so it is good to have international cricket back. I am sure a lot of eyes have been there on the Test series and now England looking good in the last Test. Everything seems to be going pretty well off the field as well with the isolation and hubs (bio-secure bubble) in the ground. Promising signs for us.&nbsp;

SC: There has been a lot of talks around the Dukes ball moving around for the entire five days in the ongoing Test series. But the Kookaburra is completely different. Brett Lee, in a recent interview with PTI, raised his concerns about the saliva-less Kookaburra. What’s your take on it? Tough on the bowlers?

Hazlewood: I think it is going to take some time to get rid of that habit – shining the ball with saliva. But I think sweat will work pretty well. Obviously, the Kookaburra is not going to do as much as the Dukes be it off the seam or in the air. So it is difficult here in Australia to get wickets. But giving right conditions – maybe the ground staff can leave a bit of grass on the wickets – such as Adelaide or Brisbane can make a difference. But I think we will be okay. We will work out a solution to get that ball nice and shiny and hopefully swinging throughout the innings. But yes, I certainly enjoyed bowling with the Dukes ball in England. It always keeps on doing something and keeps you in the game.&nbsp;

SC: Josh, 51 Tests - 195 wickets, 48 ODIs - 78 wickets and an economy rate of 4.74. What has been your key to success? What does a top bowler need to do to improve every day?&nbsp;

Hazlewood: Firstly, I try to keep my game very simple. It is about hitting the top of the off stump with an occasional bouncer. It’s pretty much down to that. It is a simple plan but to execute that plan is probably the hardest thing. Just because of what the Test wickets are, and how good the batsmen are, so it gives a small margin for error. Especially in Australia, the wickets are usually good for batting. I have always been a line and length bowler; I don’t have express pace like Mitch Starc. So I know my game well and stick to that. Over the years, I have played Test cricket all around the world and it is about learning with each experiences. So the next time you tour there, you improve every time. Hopefully, my bowling will improve as I get older. It has certainly happened in the past in tours, you seem to get better and better.

<img alt="Josh Hazlewood" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="784994cc-b715-473e-bf06-7b039db59d39" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1JJ9P6.jpg" />

You have to enjoy it as well. Enjoy the challenge of getting wicket of batsmen. You have certain tussles with certain guys. It’s good competitive stuff, good fun.

SC: What has been your toughest battle in your career?

Hazlewood: There’s been a few over the years. Obviously, Pujara couple of summers ago was quite tough work. He had a really good series, and probably was the standout batsmen from both sides so he was really hard work. There’s always that group we talk about – Virat Kohli, Joe Root and Kane Williamson along with Stevie (Smith). That group is always the key wicket for each team. AB de Villiers was always a tough battle, pretty happy he has retired from international cricket (laughs). So different team has different players and it is ultimately about adapting to each team.&nbsp;

SC: Another part of your career has been injuries. You suffered from back stress fracture early in your career and were withdrawn from the 2010 Australia’s Test tour of India. And since then you have missed a couple of series due to it. So I have two points: 1) How have you dealt with back injuries. 2) What will your tips for the younger players and their coaches who can possibly avoid it in the future?

Hazlewood: It’s a tough one the stress fractures. Happens to a lot of fast bowlers. It’s about getting a good natural action with nice rhythm that is easy as possible on your body and suits your style. I have made changes from last 18 months to now. And my action is in a much better position now taking a bit of stress off the back. So the key is to get a nice action which doesn’t put much stress on the lower back.

I think dealing with injuries is tough, mentally tough as well. You know, doing rehabs all alone, missing those games for Australia. I think I have been lucky. I have played 51 Tests as you mentioned and I have missed only six or eight since I started. I have had early troubles before I started Test cricket but I think I have an action to withstand the rigors of Test cricket and it is always evolving and try and get to perfection or as close as you can. For youngsters, it is about realizing that it is going to happen at some stage that you are going to get injured and it is about doing all that hard work off the field, be it in the gym or running, working with the coaches to try and minimize the risk of having a big injury. And keep a positive mindset even if you get injured and try and come back stronger.&nbsp;

SC: How are you looking at the upcoming training camp? Perfect way to get back to rhythm and fitness back

Hazlewood: We are doing as much as we can here in Australia. It is winters here now so it is probably tough to go outside every time. We are doing to a lot with the bowling workloads to get ready. Obviously, we will have to complete our quarantine in England before we start playing and I am assuming that will be close to two weeks. If we have a good 20 guys there and play cricket among us to get prepared because we haven’t played cricket in long time. This has been my longest break since I started playing for Australia so I might be a bit rusty and England obviously are playing at the moment. So they have a bit of a leg up on us. So we will try to create an atmosphere as close to a real match as possible. That’s probably the key.

SC: You mentioned about England already playing. I was watching their intra-friendly matches and the likes of Moeen Ali, Tom Banton, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, everyone was smashing it all over the park. So what will be the biggest challenge against this white-ball England team, the world champions?

Hazlewood: England are obviously one of the best sides if not the best, especially at home. It will be a huge challenge for us. One thing as a bowling group, we have talked of taking all 10 wickets rather than building pressure in the middle overs and hoping to keep the runs down. We want to be as attacking as much as we can and taking wickets throughout. And then bowl to the lower order in the last 10-15 overs. That helps in being top of the target. As you mentioned those guys are already playing, so it will be about preparations and get match ready quickly.&nbsp;

SC: After the England series is the Indian Premier League (IPL). You will be playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – one of the most successful franchises in the history of IPL. How much are you looking forward to IPL?

Hazlewood: I am pretty excited actually. It’s been a while that I have been in the squad. I haven’t played a game yet but I was with Mumbai Indians squad in IPL 2014. I have been using this time – April and May – for rest, preparing for other Test tours for Australia. And now it is a good opportunity to play some T20 cricket and put my name up in that format of the game, in which I haven’t played too much. As you said, it is the best T20 competition in the world. So looking forward to it and hopefully to do well for CSK.

WION: Did you follow the auction? Because Pat Cummins was over the moon after it. How were you feeling after CSK got you?

Hazlewood: I was ecstatic to be picked up by CSK. Pat was obviously different, and he is pretty excited to be out there and do well for Kolkata. I haven’t played a lot of T20 cricket in the last five years but I am happy CSK gave me an opportunity and hopefully, I can reward them.

WION: And are you looking forward to playing under the leadership of MS Dhoni?

Hazlewood: Again, I am excited! I think he is a pretty similar player to me – very relaxed and calm – and that’s how I play my best cricket, that’s when I enjoy my cricket. Hopefully, we are a good match.&nbsp;

SC: You haven’t played much T20 tournaments in last few years but you have good numbers in whatever matches you have played for Sydney Sixers in Big Bash League. So how are you looking to crack the IPL? Bringing something special in your armory?

Hazlewood: I am always working on different deliveries, different change-ups and slower balls. Hopefully in the next couple of months, I can work on settling in and deliver in the IPL. Under a lot of pressure but it is always good to try things.&nbsp;

SC: After IPL, the biggest task for Australia will be the India series. The entire world has its eyes on that series. So what do you think will be the biggest challenge for Australia, particularly against the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara?

Hazlewood: Obviously we have got Steve (Smith) and David (Warner) back and Marnus (Labuschagne) has come leaps and bounds. The bowling attack is similar to what it was but it is the batting which now has a lot more depth and experiences from the last time India toured. India’s bowling attack got us last time and that is what we don’t like to happen on our home soil. So we want to get India in that department. But as you said, everyone is going to watch this series. It has almost reach the point where it has reached point like the Ashes now. It is a huge series for both teams and we need to give a payback to India after last time.&nbsp;

SC: Any specific plan for Cheteshwar Pujara this time?

Hazlewood: (Laughs) Nothing yet. We need to have a few team meetings, bowlers meeting to come up with something. Because obviously, he is a key along with Virat and a few other guys. But if you focus too much on a player then others can hurt you. So the top 6 is always important.&nbsp;

<img alt="Josh Hazlewood" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="30f914c9-499b-4133-bb94-4782dcd54daf" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1JP61J.jpg" />

SC: And how big will the pink ball Test in Adelaide?

Hazlewood: That’s probably huge for us the pink ball Test. We obviously play a lot more Test in Adelaide. We have got some good experience with the pink ball. That’s probably a big positive for us. But again you have to play good cricket. And we are playing in Brisbane as well. We love playing there. So we have got a few things going are way already. It is about executing on the day as well. Things can move pretty quickly in pink ball Test and India have a great pace attack as well. It’s going to be good fun.&nbsp;

SC: Coming to the pace attacks of both the teams, how do you compare and differentiate these two pace line-ups?

Hazlewood: I think both teams have pretty good depth. We have our three guys who play most of the Tests and then James Pattinson, Jackson Bird, Michael Nesser, Jhye Richardson. We have good depth there, same as India. The variety in both the sides is pretty good, to be honest. Jasprit Bumrah is different to Ishant Sharma and vice-versa. It is a top attack and our batters would want to get their hands up against that attack, which didn’t happen last time (laughs). Hopefully, we will keep them out there for long and wear them down.&nbsp;

SC: Do you think it is important to evolve with time and learn new craft such as wobble seam, reverse swing or say knuckle ball in T20s?

Hazlewood: Conditions play a big part. If one place is swinging more then it is about is about controlling that swing but if it is not swinging but seaming then it becomes an entire different story. So that happens over time by playing in different grounds in different conditions. Calling that arsenal and bring it on and perform in each and every game. International cricket is a tough game. As you said, it is about evolving with time and improving.&nbsp;

SC: What will be your combined India-Australia Test XI?

Hazlewood: Starting from quicks, I will have myself in (laughs) with Pat Cummins and Jasprit Bumrah. In Australian conditions, I will have Nathan Lyon and in Indian conditions, Ravichandran Ashwin. Openers would be Mayank Agarwal – taking future in consideration – and David Warner. Steve Smith, Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara are automatic picks at three, four and five. At no. six…I will have Marnus Labuschagne or Rohit Sharma given their ability to change the game.&nbsp;

Josh Hazlewood’s India-Australia combined Test XI: Mayank Agarwal, David Warner, Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Marnus Labuschagne/Rohit Sharma, Tim Paine (wk), Nathan Lyon/Ravichandran Ashwin, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Jasprit Bumrah.

SC: What will be you message for fans who are supporting the Sport from home?

Hazlewood: Hopefully, we can get some crowd, maybe in the IPL or definitely in India series here in Australia. Football is getting 30,000 audience here in Perth. So I guess there’s a possibility of getting a good crowd in. Obviously, great atmosphere with Indian fans, they a make a lot of noise and they love cricket. And if they are watching it from their couches, then I hope we play some really entertaining cricket for them and hopefully they will enjoy it.

Australia are looking to get back to action with the upcoming limited-overs series lined up against England after a prolonged three-months break due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Australia are looking to get back to action with the upcoming limited-overs series lined up against England after a prolonged three-months break due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, the biggest challenge for the Australian side will be the Test series against India, scheduled to start in December. While preparations are set to take off in the Australian camp for the England series, all eyes will be on the much-awaited series against India with Australia eyeing redemption following the 2-1 defeat in 2018-19 series. × Subhayan Chakraborty: Josh, how has been life for you in these past three months. Things have been pretty difficult for everyone it feels. Josh Hazlewood: Thank you for having me. Yes, I think it has been different, it has been difficult. We are just doing our business here. We are training four-five days a week in smaller six-eight a person group, enough for couple of net sessions. The weather here has been pretty good for winter. So I have been getting outdoors quite a fair bit. So all’s going well and we are sort of getting whatever comes our way like the tour to the UK next month. SC: Australia have a tour to England lined up. Have you been following the England versus the West Indies Test series? Hazlewood: Yes, I have been watching it a little bit. There’s no such sport going on so it is good to have international cricket back. I am sure a lot of eyes have been there on the Test series and now England looking good in the last Test. Everything seems to be going pretty well off the field as well with the isolation and hubs (bio-secure bubble) in the ground. Promising signs for us. Hazlewood: I think it is going to take some time to get rid of that habit – shining the ball with saliva. But I think sweat will work pretty well. Obviously, the Kookaburra is not going to do as much as the Dukes be it off the seam or in the air. So it is difficult here in Australia to get wickets. But giving right conditions – maybe the ground staff can leave a bit of grass on the wickets – such as Adelaide or Brisbane can make a difference. But I think we will be okay. We will work out a solution to get that ball nice and shiny and hopefully swinging throughout the innings. But yes, I certainly enjoyed bowling with the Dukes ball in England. It always keeps on doing something and keeps you in the game. SC: Josh, 51 Tests - 195 wickets, 48 ODIs - 78 wickets and an economy rate of 4.74. What has been your key to success? What does a top bowler need to do to improve every day? You have to enjoy it as well. Enjoy the challenge of getting wicket of batsmen. You have certain tussles with certain guys. It’s good competitive stuff, good fun. SC: What has been your toughest battle in your career? Hazlewood: There’s been a few over the years. Obviously, Pujara couple of summers ago was quite tough work. He had a really good series, and probably was the standout batsmen from both sides so he was really hard work. There’s always that group we talk about – Virat Kohli, Joe Root and Kane Williamson along with Stevie (Smith). That group is always the key wicket for each team. AB de Villiers was always a tough battle, pretty happy he has retired from international cricket (laughs). So different team has different players and it is ultimately about adapting to each team. I think dealing with injuries is tough, mentally tough as well. You know, doing rehabs all alone, missing those games for Australia. I think I have been lucky. Claims of physical abuse at NBA basketball academies in China are "disturbing", a senior official said, while adding that none of the coaches provided by the league were accused of wrongdoing.

Deputy commissioner Mark Tatum said the NBA was reassessing its programme in China and that the league's role was limited to providing just three coaches at each Chinese-run academy.

An ESPN report released this week detailed physical abuse and a lack of schooling at the academies in Shandong, Zhejiang and Xinjiang -- the western region where China is accused of holding one million people in internment camps. NBA cut its ties with the Xinjiang academy last year.

"The allegations in the ESPN article are disturbing," Tatum said, in a statement sent to AFP.&nbsp;

"We ended our involvement with the basketball academy in Xinjiang in June 2019 and have been re-evaluating the NBA Academy programme in China."

The ESPN report described widespread physical punishment for young players, a lack of formal education, cramped living conditions, two or three training sessions a day and few extracurricular activities.

It said the academy project was "fundamentally flawed" because the NBA coaches are placed under the authority of Chinese officials and do not have access to the country's elite players.

Tatum said the NBA launched the "elite player development initiative in 2016 by working to support three existing basketball development centres in China operated by local sports authorities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Our role was limited to providing three coaches at each academy, none of whom have been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing."

One expert quoted in the report, a British-based academic who grew up in China, said physical discipline was common among Chinese coaches, pointing to cultural differences with the West.

Mexican Formula One driver Sergio Perez will miss Sunday’s British Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19, his Racing Point team said on Thursday.

The Canadian-owned outfit said the 30-year-old, who is the first driver to test positive since the pandemic-hit season started this month, was “physically well and in good spirits”.

They said they planned to replace him for the race at Silverstone.

With Britain extending the virus isolation period to 10 days from seven on Thursday, Perez also looks set to miss the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix — race five — at the same circuit on the following weekend.

Racing Point share reserves with engine supplier Mercedes, who have Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne and Mexican Esteban Gutierrez in those roles.

Both are experienced former F1 race drivers but Gutierrez would be the driver on call since Vandoorne is preparing for the final races of the stalled all-electric Formula E season in Berlin.

Racing Point could, however, call up another driver of their choice with Germany’s Nico Hulkenberg — who raced for Renault last season — one such possibility.

A decision will have to be made before practice starts on Friday.

Perez, who is sixth in the championship, and a small group of team mates who had come into contact with him had already gone into self-isolation after an initial test came back as inconclusive.

“The FIA and Formula One can now confirm that the result of his re-test is positive,” Formula One and the governing body said in a joint statement.

“Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities.”

<h3>NO WIDER IMPACT</h3>

Mexico has been hard hit by the virus, with the fourth highest number of fatalities in the world, but a Racing Point spokesman said Perez had not been back to his country since he last raced in Hungary on July 19.

Formula One has started its delayed season without spectators and under carefully controlled conditions, with teams operating in bubbles and all employees and those with access to the paddock tested every five days.

The sport had reported only two positive results, neither involving people who attended races, from more than 15,000 tests carried out from June 26 to July 23.

“The procedures set out by the FIA and Formula One have provided for swift containment of an incident that will have no wider impact on this weekend’s event,” the sport said.

Formula One chairman Chase Carey said before the start of the season that the sport would not cancel a race even if a driver tested positive.

“We encourage teams to have procedures in place so if an individual has to be put in quarantine, we have the ability to quarantine them at a hotel and to replace that individual,” he said then.

The original season-opener in Melbourne in March was cancelled after a McLaren employee tested positive before the track action had started.

Racing Point have been in the headlines on track as well this season, with their pink car a lookalike of last year’s title-winning Mercedes and subject to an ongoing protest by Renault.

The team are fourth, just one point behind McLaren.

“Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities.” NO WIDER IMPACT Mexico has been hard hit by the virus, with the fourth highest number of fatalities in the world, but a Racing Point spokesman said Perez had not been back to his country since he last raced in Hungary on July 19. F1 driver Perez to miss British GP after COVID-19 positive

Newcastle United fans say they have been treated with contempt after a 300 million-pound takeover bid from a Saudi-backed consortium collapsed on Thursday.

The group, which included Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, PCP Capital Partners and Reuben Brothers, announced they were ending their interest in the deal which had been delayed by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a>’s owners and directors test.

The end of the Saudi bid left the North East club still in the hands of British businessman Mike Ashley, who has long faced protests and opposition from the fans.

Many Newcastle fans had welcomed the takeover, seeing it as a chance to boost the club’s fortunes through investment in new players.

But the bid had been criticised by human rights campaigners and had come up against questions about pirate broadcasts of Premier League games in Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle fans expressed frustration at the length of the Premier League’s scrutiny and press criticism of the takeover.

“The supporters of Newcastle United have been treated with contempt by large parts of the football media and the Premier League during this failed takeover process,” said the NUFC Supporters Trust.

“It’s been made clear that we are the least important people in a decision which affects us the most. We need answers,” they added.

Chi Onwurah, Labour Member of Parliament for Newcastle Central, said she would be contacting the Premier League.

“I know that many constituents will be disappointed and frustrated by the withdrawal of the latest NUFC takeover offer. I will be writing to the Premier League to ask why they took so long and gave so little clarity to NUFC fans,” she wrote on Twitter.

The city’s local newspaper, The Chronicle, published an open letter to the Premier League saying the team’s supporters were owed an explanation.

“A transformative but deeply controversial takeover is off. Having dreamed of something different, the city now confronts the reality of what Newcastle are: unloved, divorced from its people, deeply divided and facing the most uncertain of futures,” the paper wrote.

“The Premier League tonight stands accused of blocking a once-in-a-lifetime investment in the city and football club. It is a serious accusation that demands a response,” it added.

Noting that the Premier League has kept quiet, observing the confidential nature of the owners and directors test, the paper said the time had come for openness.

“But without clarity or the decency to even acknowledge the festering sores at one of your member clubs, we do not know. Left in the dark, Newcastle fans are furious tonight,” The Chronicle said.

The Premier League and Newcastle United did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Newcastle fans demand answers after Saudi bid collapses

Baseball is one of several sports seeking a slice of the huge Indian market and its similarity with cricket, often called a religion in the country of 1.4 billion, could give it a head start, Major League Baseball (MLB) officials hope.

MLB spent a decade and half studying the market before opening a sixth international office in New Delhi last year and was encouraged by the throwing, hitting and catching techniques that link America’s pastime and India’s obsession.

“Cricket is such a big sport here. So catching, throwing and swing of the bat come very naturally,” Ryo Takahashi, who heads MLB’s business and commercial operations in India, told Reuters.

“The sheer size of this country, the population — to be able to hook India to baseball, that definitely boosts the sport worldwide.”

Takahashi, perhaps wisely, said the plan was not to try to supplant cricket in India.

“We’re not trying to bring baseball as an alternative, or as a replacement, by any means,” he said.

“Anything new, whether it’s music or restaurants, it’s exciting. So new sport is something that might resonate.

“Within that, if there’s some sort of familiarity, it’s easier for people to relate. I think it’s a good mix, it’s a perfect mix.”

The National Basketball Association (NBA), which opened an office in India in 2011, staged two pre-season games in Mumbai in October last year.

MLB, which has previously played games in Mexico, Japan and Australia, made a foray into Europe last year when the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox took their rivalry to London.

Takahashi said it would be premature to do something similar in India, where MLB has attracted more than 30,000 school students in 320 workshops since opening its office.

“We eventually want to get there. I don’t think the demand is here yet, so it wouldn’t make sense to suddenly do that,” he said.

<h3>“MILLION DOLLAR ARM”</h3>

The league also plans to revive ‘Million Dollar Arm’, a contest that began as a reality television show and inspired a 2014 Hollywood movie.

Takahashi said the contest, which drew thousands of aspiring pitchers competing to earn a tryout with a Major League team, would now be an annual affair.

“When it happened, there was a buzz. We plan to do it again ... and make sure we were able to capitalise on that.”

The Indian men’s team played in the Asian Championship in 1987 and 1989 but the country’s Olympic Association only recognised the national amateur baseball federation in 2002.

The long-term goal remained to facilitate Indian representation at the elite level, Takahashi said.

“I think there’s a lot of ways for us to measure success. It could be a situation like Yao Ming for the NBA (in China). It could be TV rating numbers, it could be the national team of India competing in the World Baseball Classic...

“We have the resources, we have the experience and we definitely have the will ... Tough to put a date to it but I think definitely all of it is achievable,” added Takahashi.

The COVID-19 outbreak has slowed down that effort but head of baseball development David Palese said they used the time to extend the coaching network through series of webinars.

“Ideally we want to be on the field ... but in the last three-four months, we’ve made that virtual connection with over 1,000 participants,” he said.

Baseball: MLB looking for Indians to trade willow for ash

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea should be aiming to fight for league titles every year, but winning the FA Cup on Saturday could be a building block towards a title challenge next season.

In his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, Lampard has guided Chelsea back into the Champions League next season despite the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and a transfer ban to contend with.

Chelsea are already making up for lost time in the transfer market with Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech signed for next season.

But Lampard insists victory over Arsenal at Wembley will only lead to greater things if it is accompanied by the same dedication to improve as his squad have shown this season.

"It's a nice boost but it will only mean anything going forward if we take it in our pocket, move forward and improve as a club and on the training pitch," Lampard said on Friday.

"A top club will compete for cups and league titles every year. We did it for a long time.

"In the last few years we haven't been able to fight for that league title so it doesn't mean all of sudden we are back and in that picture, but it will be a nice, small step when you consider where we want to get to next year."

Lampard is able to welcome N'Golo Kante back from a hamstring injury that kept the French midfielder out for the last six games.

Willian is also fit again for what could be his final game for the club.

The Brazilian's contract expires at the end of the season, but Lampard has no doubts over using him at Wembley despite rumours he could be on his way to Arsenal next season.

Willian played a key role in getting Chelsea into the Premier League's top four with four goals since the season restarted in June.

"I've known Willian for many years now as a player and now as his coach," added Lampard of his former teammate.

"If anyone wants to see the mentality of him, it's been shown since restart.

"He's been fantastic for us, he's been fantastic this season. He's shown the right attitude.

"So I would expect nothing less than he's shown already, and that's Willian for you."

FA Cup win would be 'small step' in Lampard's plan for Chelsea

His rise has been unprecedented. Since turning out as a concussion substitute, the first-ever in Test cricket, for Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne hasn't looked back. He was the top run scorer in the year 2019 when it comes to Test cricket and rapidly became a household name due to his eerie technique and exceptional talent. Labuschagne was named the 2019 ICC Men's Emerging Cricket and now sits at no. 3 in ICC Test Rankings for Batsmen. The future promises to be bright for the rising superstar but with the resumption of cricket, new challenges are bound to arrive.

In an exclusive interview with WION, Aussie batsman Marnus Labuschagne talked about his sensational rise, upcoming England series, his ambitions to play in IPL, upcoming Test series against India, how he plans to face Jasprit Bumrah and Co., and more.

Subhayan Chakraborty: Welcome to WION, Marnus! How are you&nbsp;and how did the lockdown phase go for you? Staying indoors for most of the times must have been tough…

Marnus Labuschagne: I am very good, thank you. Thank you for having me. We have been very lucky here in Australia, especially in Brisbane. Things obviously were locked down here for a bit but we seem to get out of it probably quicker than a lot of other countries. Being in lockdown, I probably couldn’t work on a lot of things. But yes, the gym stuff, staying fit and then just mucking around in the garage or playing some cricket games and things like that. So it is a good way to stay in touch with cricket and also work on some of the things seriously.&nbsp;

Subhayan: Marnus, the next immediate assignment for Australia is the England limited-overs tour. Are Australia looking to work on fitness and rhythm when it assembles for the camp?

Marnus Labuschagne: I see most of the teams can be very fit and very ready to go. Obviously, it has been like five months of isolation so I feel everyone is going to be fit and ready, and raring to get out and play. So for me, it is just about making sure that I am fit and ready. We are training here a lot in Queensland. So it is a very good opportunity to stay with the state association and work on those skills.&nbsp;

<img alt="Marnus Labuschagne" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="8db57332-41b2-4e98-8900-f1a7321a642f" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1PO5V4.jpg" />

Subhayan: The post-Covid world has brought new rules and restrictions. What is your take on that as a batsman’s perspective?

Marnus Labuschagne: I do think in Test cricket there will be a slight difference. The two games I have watched so far in England, the ball probably isn’t swinging as much but they are playing in wickets that are probably a little bit flatter. So we have to see whether it is just the saliva issue or probably wickets being flatter and there’s not much swing. But we have to be adaptable and hope bowlers find new ways to get it swinging.&nbsp;

Subhayan: Your rise in international cricket has been staggering. So is holding onto it necessary or do you strive to even better it?

Marnus Labuschagne: For me it is about getting better. Although I had a great run last summer, the job is to get better. And that is the aim and goal. Getting stronger and being fit adds a great value and it is important that you are making good decisions and understanding the game. Keep trying to get better every session.&nbsp;

Subhayan: Even in ODI cricket, your start has been brilliant. How important is it for a modern day batsman to switch quickly between both formats in terms of mindset?

Marnus Labuschagne: It is really important in modern day cricket to be able to switch in between format to format. It’s definitely something I personally want – just stay ready – and obviously you have to do some things differently in your preparations and the way you prepare for a game. All and all, it is a massive part of the game. You look at guys like Virat Kohli, whose able to switch between all three formats; Steve Smith and David Warner, and have success. Consistently there is a benchmark. And the target is to hit those standards.&nbsp;

Subhayan: You have done really well in Tests and ODIs, T20s remain an untouched territory for you. You have played just 10 Big Bash League matches for Brisbane Heat. Are you looking to make a solid mark in the format in near future

Marnus Labuschagne: Absolutely, I definitely want to be playing all three formats. For me it doesn’t matter where my opportunity comes and I am playing a T20 game then it is important for me to make sure that I am understanding my role within that team and how I want to approach that format of the game. Like you said, I haven’t played too many T20 games, but with the schedule I don’t think I am going to play too many either. So for me, it is about learning in ODI cricket and making sure that I am ready to grab any opportunity that come my way.

<img alt="Marnus Labuschagne" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="ac9a2e6f-dd79-4c40-9620-27d5d01c7957" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1NF7A5.jpg" />

Subhayan: Any ambitions to play in IPL in near future?

Marnus Labuschagne: Yes, absolutely! You want to be playing in the best T20 tournament in the world. Everyone wants to be part of the IPL. You are never going to turn down an opportunity to play, that’s for sure. But the two formats – ODIs and Tests – are the pinnacle for me, at the moment.&nbsp;

Subhayan: Coming to the Ashes, you became the first-ever concussion substitute and looked raring to go as we watched in the docu-series. How were the nerves like when you crossed the rope and walked on to bat a fired up Jofra Archer and Co.?

Marnus Labuschagne: Most of the nerves happen when you wait for your batting. All the batters out there become a bit nervous and anxious before they walk out to bat. But once you cross that line with the bowlers running in, you just want to focus on your game. If a bowler is clocking 150 kmph, you don’t have the time to waste and think about other things. Obviously, I was nervous before hand but when I was there it was about getting into the contest and making sure I am ready to go.&nbsp;

Subhayan: The first delivery by Jofra that struck your grill. I think the way you reacted to it made the world realise the characteristics you bring along with you…

Marnus Labuschagne: You just can’t plan those things and how you are going to react. Just as it hit my helmet and I went down, I thought there was no way you are going to stay down here. You are not going to be first concussion sub to get concussed out of the game. So you get up straightaway, fix your gloves, pop your chest out and get on with it.

Subhayan: You became the first concussion sub for Steve Smith, who is really close to you. What role has he played in your career so far?

Marnus Labuschagne: He (Steve Smith) has had a big part to play. Someone who is very likeminded. We think about the game similarly. We talk a lot, we love the game. He was someone who I was about to talk to about batting, the game prior to the Ashes. As time passed, there has been a lot more conversations and he has been very helpful. And it is always not about talking but just watching him play. Being about to learn from someone like him – he has been very good.&nbsp;

Subhayan: And how are you looking at the India series? The last time they were on top of Australia…

Marnus Labuschagne: I can’t wait, I can’t wait for it to start! Very excited for it to get underway. Two of the best Test nations in the world going at it. That’s what we want to see. That’s what people want to see. Not only me but the whole team is excited for that challenge. Two good teams, two good bowling attacks coming head-to-head, what’s not to like!

<img alt="Marnus Labuschagne" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="1dd1ffab-312f-449d-a992-d59c7ec17fe0" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1MI207.jpg" />

Subhayan: Have you started to think about the likes of Bumrah, Ishant, Shami, Umesh and others from that Indian attack?

Marnus Labuschagne: Maybe not as specific but definitely, I have given it a thought about how teams will attack or they will bowl to me in Test cricket and one-day cricket. So for me it is about making sure I am well-rehearsed and understand how teams will come and attack me and making sure I have plans accordingly.&nbsp;

Subhayan: Do you think the pink-ball Test will be biggest occasion of the India series?

Marnus Labuschagne: MCG, usually packed out, the Boxing Day is always the biggest. But the pink-ball Test a great specatacle, a great game to be a part of. We were able to do great last year against Pakistan in the pink-ball game. Our batters were able to put big runs on board and our bowlers were phenomenal. We were really tremendous and hope to repeat the same this time.&nbsp;

Subhayan: As you said, it is about learning and preparing. But in international cricket, teams do find a player out at some stage. So how important is for a youngster to keep their levels up?

Marnus Labuschagne: For any player, you need to have that drive and willingness to get better each day, each game, each session. If you get too comfortable or maybe over-confident in one specific method then you get found out. Steve Smith is a great example, he is always one step ahead of the time because he just plays in a different manner depending on the conditions. We have got a very good example there in Steve. For me it is to make sure I am understanding the game well and getting better each day.&nbsp;

Subhayan: Marnus, what is your ultimate dream while playing for Australia. You have started brilliantly and would want to achieve big things. What would be on the top of that list?

Marnus Labuschagne: As a player, you always talk about two things. Let’s not talk about personal success but in team’s perspective – beating India in India is always very tough and it is what every sides wants to do; and beating England in England, which we were very close to doing last summer but we fell short and it was a two-all. But yes, those two things are something which you always want and that achievement is probably a good sign of a very good team.&nbsp;

Subhayan: What will be your message to the fans, supporting the sport from their home?

Marnus Labuschagne: I just hope that everyone is excited. I know the players are super excited to get back out there and play some cricket. We just can’t wait to get back out there. We are probably as excited as the people watching. The last few months have been a very challenging time for many people for many different reasons, people getting affected by so many different things – by actual virus itself, job loss. But keep persevering and keep looking forward. Cricket can hopefully put some smile on the faces.&nbsp;

His rise has been unprecedented. Since turning out as a concussion substitute, the first-ever in Test cricket, for Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne hasn't looked back. He was the top run scorer in the year 2019 when it comes to Test cricket and rapidly became a household name due to his eerie technique and exceptional talent. Labuschagne was named the 2019 ICC Men's Emerging Cricket and now sits at no. 3 in ICC Test Rankings for Batsmen. The future promises to be bright for the rising superstar but with the resumption of cricket, new challenges are bound to arrive. In an exclusive interview with WION, Aussie batsman Marnus Labuschagne talked about his sensational rise, upcoming England series, his ambitions to play in IPL, upcoming Test series against India, how he plans to face Jasprit Bumrah and Co., and more. × Subhayan Chakraborty: Welcome to WION, Marnus! How are you and how did the lockdown phase go for you? Staying indoors for most of the times must have been tough… Marnus Labuschagne: I am very good, thank you. Thank you for having me. We have been very lucky here in Australia, especially in Brisbane. Things obviously were locked down here for a bit but we seem to get out of it probably quicker than a lot of other countries. Being in lockdown, I probably couldn’t work on a lot of things. But yes, the gym stuff, staying fit and then just mucking around in the garage or playing some cricket games and things like that. So it is a good way to stay in touch with cricket and also work on some of the things seriously. Subhayan: Marnus, the next immediate assignment for Australia is the England limited-overs tour. Are Australia looking to work on fitness and rhythm when it assembles for the camp? Marnus Labuschagne: I see most of the teams can be very fit and very ready to go. Obviously, it has been like five months of isolation so I feel everyone is going to be fit and ready, and raring to get out and play. So for me, it is just about making sure that I am fit and ready. We are training here a lot in Queensland. So it is a very good opportunity to stay with the state association and work on those skills. Subhayan: The post-Covid world has brought new rules and restrictions. What is your take on that as a batsman’s perspective? Marnus Labuschagne: I do think in Test cricket there will be a slight difference. The two games I have watched so far in England, the ball probably isn’t swinging as much but they are playing in wickets that are probably a little bit flatter. So we have to see whether it is just the saliva issue or probably wickets being flatter and there’s not much swing. But we have to be adaptable and hope bowlers find new ways to get it swinging. Subhayan: Your rise in international cricket has been staggering. So is holding onto it necessary or do you strive to even better it? Marnus Labuschagne: For me it is about getting better. Although I had a great run last summer, the job is to get better. And that is the aim and goal. Getting stronger and being fit adds a great value and it is important that you are making good decisions and understanding the game. Keep trying to get better every session. Subhayan: Even in ODI cricket, your start has been brilliant. How important is it for a modern day batsman to switch quickly between both formats in terms of mindset? Marnus Labuschagne: It is really important in modern day cricket to be able to switch in between format to format. It’s definitely something I personally want – just stay ready – and obviously you have to do some things differently in your preparations and the way you prepare for a game. All and all, it is a massive part of the game. You look at guys like Virat Kohli, whose able to switch between all three formats; Steve Smith and David Warner, and have success. Consistently there is a benchmark. And the target is to hit those standards. ALSO READ: EXCLUSIVE: Australia's Josh Hazlewood opens up on England and India series, IPL 2020, injuries and more Subhayan: You have done really well in Tests and ODIs, T20s remain an untouched territory for you. You have played just 10 Big Bash League matches for Brisbane Heat. Are you looking to make a solid mark in the format in near future Marnus Labuschagne: Absolutely, I definitely want to be playing all three formats. For me it doesn’t matter where my opportunity comes and I am playing a T20 game then it is important for me to make sure that I am understanding my role within that team and how I want to approach that format of the game. Like you said, I haven’t played too many T20 games, but with the schedule I don’t think I am going to play too many either. So for me, it is about learning in ODI cricket and making sure that I am ready to grab any opportunity that come my way. Subhayan: Any ambitions to play in IPL in near future? Marnus Labuschagne: Yes, absolutely! You want to be playing in the best T20 tournament in the world. Everyone wants to be part of the IPL. You are never going to turn down an opportunity to play, that’s for sure. But the two formats – ODIs and Tests – are the pinnacle for me, at the moment. Subhayan: Coming to the Ashes, you became the first-ever concussion substitute and looked raring to go as we watched in the docu-series. How were the nerves like when you crossed the rope and walked on to bat a fired up Jofra Archer and Co.? Marnus Labuschagne: Most of the nerves happen when you wait for your batting. All the batters out there become a bit nervous and anxious before they walk out to bat. But once you cross that line with the bowlers running in, you just want to focus on your game. If a bowler is clocking 150 kmph, you don’t have the time to waste and think about other things. Obviously, I was nervous before hand but when I was there it was about getting into the contest and making sure I am ready to go. Subhayan: The first delivery by Jofra that struck your grill. I think the way you reacted to it made the world realise the characteristics you bring along with you… Marnus Labuschagne: You just can’t plan those things and how you are going to react. Just as it hit my helmet and I went down, I thought there was no way you are going to stay down here. You are not going to be first concussion sub to get concussed out of the game. So you get up straightaway, fix your gloves, pop your chest out and get on with it. Subhayan: You became the first concussion sub for Steve Smith, who is really close to you. What role has he played in your career so far? Marnus Labuschagne: He (Steve Smith) has had a big part to play. Someone who is very likeminded. We think about the game similarly. We talk a lot, we love the game. He was someone who I was about to talk to about batting, the game prior to the Ashes. As time passed, there has been a lot more conversations and he has been very helpful. And it is always not about talking but just watching him play. Being about to learn from someone like him – he has been very good. Subhayan: And how are you looking at the India series? England started the three-match ODI series against Ireland by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/willey-and-billings-star-as-england-beat-ireland-in-odi-return-317223">defeating the visitors by six wickets at the Rose Bowl, Southampton on Thursday</a>. It was a cakewalk for Eoin Morgan and Co. after returnee David Willey ran past the Irish batting line-up by picking up a splendid five-fer to bundle out the Andy Balbirnie-led side to 172.&nbsp;

Even though the Irish bowlers tried their best to inflict some damage upfront by dismissing opener Jonny Bairstow for cheap, the 173-run target was too small for the reigning world champions. Another returnee – Sam Billings – made an instant mark by playing a whirlwind knock of 67 not-out off 54 while skipper Eoin Morgan rallied his troops with an unbeaten 36 off 40.&nbsp;

The Emirates Cricket Board is looking to fill-up 30 to 50 per cent of the stadiums with crowds when the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> kickstarts in the UAE following government approval, ECB secretary Mubashshir Usmani said on Friday.

Earlier, IPL Governing Council Chairman Brijesh Patel had said that the decision on the crowds will be on the UAE government. After announcing the dates of IPL 2020, i.e September 19 to November 8, BCCI is awaiting Indian government’s approval to shift the cash-rich tournament in the UAE.&nbsp;

"Once we get the confirmation from the BCCI (on Indian government's approval), we will go to our government with the complete proposal and SOPs which will be prepared by us and the BCCI," Usmani told PTI.

"We have plug and play facilities here and have informed them (officials at Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah stadiums) to be ready and they are fully aware of it."

Asked if managing the training schedules of eight teams will be a challenge, Usmani said: "UAE is blessed with the support of private infrastructure. We are able to deliver such events and have delivered before. Last year, we hosted the T20 World Cup qualifier which had 14 teams."

The UAE had partially hosted the IPL in 2014 due to the general elections in India.

IPL 2020: Emirates Cricket Board to fill 30 to 50 per cent of stadiums in UAE

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reckons that star forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the club could be influenced by Saturday’s outcome in the FA Cup final against London-rivals Chelsea with the Gunners desperately trying to keep hold of the Gabon international.&nbsp;

Aubameyang has just one year left on his current contract and if he cannot be convinced about a new deal then the Gunners would have to sell the 31-year-old to get the maximum out of the deal.

Aubameyang is one of Europe’s deadliest striker in over the last six seasons with two major trophies under his belt at St Etienne and Borussia Dortmund. Arteta, who have captained Arsenal to two FA Cup wins, firmly feels winning the final against Chelsea would convince Aubameyang to trust club’s pathway.&nbsp;

"No, I don't have that feeling," said Arteta on Friday when asked if Saturday's clash could be Aubameyang's final game for the club.

"It's a package at the end. You need to have a lot of ingredients on the table to persuade a player of his level to be at this football club.

"Don't forget that he still has a contract here with us. We want to do it in a long-term, at the moment he's with us and he should be really proud of where he is.

"Winning a trophy helps to really believe and feel 'wow', I want more of these moments. If you are wearing the armband and able to lift that cup, it is such a moment. This is going to help for sure."

Winning the FA Cup would also provide a huge boost to Arteta given he is working on to restore Arsenal’s former glories.&nbsp;

"It generates trust when you win titles," he added. "It generates moments when together you go through some good emotions.

"It brings everybody together, you have memories, there is a lot of things about winning a trophy that is so positive for any group and when you are in a process of (development) that makes it even more important, so we have a great opportunity tomorrow, let's go for it."

A win against Chelsea would also make sure that Arsenal don’t miss out on European football for the first time since 1995/96 as a victory would give them automatic qualification to Europa League 2020-21.&nbsp;

"It's a final, the only focus is on winning that trophy tomorrow," said Arteta.

"Financially it would be really helpful and on the sporting side, to play European football for this club is a must."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reckons that star forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the club could be influenced by Saturday’s outcome in the FA Cup final against London-rivals Chelsea with the Gunners desperately trying to keep hold of the Gabon international. Aubameyang has just one year left on his current contract and if he cannot be convinced about a new deal then the Gunners would have to sell the 31-year-old to get the maximum out of the deal. Aubameyang is one of Europe’s deadliest striker in over the last six seasons with two major trophies under his belt at St Etienne and Borussia Dortmund. Arteta, who have captained Arsenal to two FA Cup wins, firmly feels winning the final against Chelsea would convince Aubameyang to trust club’s pathway. ALSO READ: Newcastle fans demand answers after Saudi bid collapses "No, I don't have that feeling," said Arteta on Friday when asked if Saturday's clash could be Aubameyang's final game for the club. "It's a package at the end. You need to have a lot of ingredients on the table to persuade a player of his level to be at this football club. "Don't forget that he still has a contract here with us. We want to do it in a long-term, at the moment he's with us and he should be really proud of where he is. If you are wearing the armband and able to lift that cup, it is such a moment. This is going to help for sure." Winning the FA Cup would also provide a huge boost to Arteta given he is working on to restore Arsenal’s former glories. "It generates trust when you win titles," he added. "It generates moments when together you go through some good emotions. "It brings everybody together, you have memories, there is a lot of things about winning a trophy that is so positive for any group and when you are in a process of (development) that makes it even more important, so we have a great opportunity tomorrow, let's go for it." A win against Chelsea would also make sure that Arsenal don’t miss out on European football for the first time since 1995/96 as a victory would give them automatic qualification to Europa League 2020-21. "It's a final, the only focus is on winning that trophy tomorrow," said Arteta. "Financially it would be really helpful and on the sporting side, to play European football for this club is a must."

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> wanted the Saudi state to become a director of Newcastle United for a takeover deal to go through, according to a leading member of the investment group who were looking to buy the club.&nbsp;

A proposed £300 million ($391 million) takeover collapsed on Thursday when the investment group of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben and Amanda Staveley of PCP Capital Partners said they had withdrawn their interest after three months waiting for the Premier League's approval.

Issues over Saudi piracy of sports broadcasting rights, including the Premier League, and pressure from human rights groups to block the deal complicated the process.

Staveley has been interested in buying the club for the past three years and had finally agreed a deal with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley in April with PIF reportedly set to take an 80 percent stake in the club.

"The Premier League wanted the country, Saudi, to become a director of the football club," Staveley told The Athletic.

"That's what this is about. They were effectively saying 'PIF wouldn't be the ultimate beneficial owner, we believe it's actually the government, therefore we want the country to become a director'.

"The Premier League made it so hard. It would be unprecedented. No country has ever become a director of a club. It's ridiculous."

Staveley also claimed that other Premier League clubs played a part in influencing the league's decision to stall over seeing the deal through.

Newcastle have not won a major domestic trophy since 1955, but could still count on regular crowds of 50,000 before coronavirus pandemic forced stadiums to close.

Many fans dreamed that the riches of a Saudi-backed project could replicate Manchester City's success in winning four Premier League titles since Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour bought the club in 2008.

"We know that other clubs briefed heavily against it. Because they were jealous," Staveley added.

"Newcastle are the last great untapped club. The last great club with so much potential to grow and improve and with a fanbase who were already there and who wanted it so much."

Newcastle's all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer said the club's fans have been left angry and disappointed by the collapse of the takeover.

"There's a lot of anger, understandably so, and a massive amount of disappointment," Shearer told the BBC.

"They want their club to compete, they want their club to move forward, that's why yesterday was such a disappointing day."

Retail tycoon Ashley is a deeply unpopular figure among the Newcastle support for his treatment of fans and an unwillingness to invest on the field to improve the club's fortunes.

Newcastle have finished 13th in the Premier League table for the past two seasons and have twice been relegated to the Championship during Ashley's 13-year reign.

"We can only hope and pray that new owners come in at some stage and take the club back to where it belongs because that's what the fans of Newcastle deserve," said Shearer.

Sporting scenario in India completely changed after the country’s unparalleled success in the Beijing Olympics. While Abhinav Bindra clinched India’s first individual gold medal in the Games, Sushil Kumar and Vijender Singh bagged bronze in men’s freestyle wrestling and boxing events respectively. It was the first time in the history of Olympics that India won three medals - a historic event for the entire nation.&nbsp;

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar and Vijender Singh recalled the historic 2008 Beijing Games while explaining how it changed their lives and sporting scenario in the country.&nbsp;

Sushil remains the only Indian sportsperson to have won two Olympic medals. The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna-awardee remembered how his coach taugh him to be humble while adding that those three medals in Beijing Olympics changed the outlook of Indian sport.

“I consider it an honour to have won medals for India. My coach Satpal taught me to be humble and to focus on my sport. No one believed we could win Olympic medals in 2008 but those 3 medals changed the outlook of Indian sport. Today every young sportsperson wants to win a gold at the Olympics,” Sushil told WION.&nbsp;

Whereas Vijender said that both Abhinav Bindra and Sushil deserve Bharat Ratna for what they have done for the country and added that it would be a motivating aspect for budding sportspersons if the duo is awarded with India’s highest civilian honour.

“Abhinav bindra and Sushil deserve the Bharat Ratna for the achievements. I do not want to go into the past and which sportsperson deserves it more but it would be very motivating for budding sportspersons if these two are awarded India’s highest civilian honour. They are fully deserving of this respect,” Vijender told WION.

In an interesting insight, Sushil revealed how Leander Paes’ bronze medal at 1996 Atlanta Olympics inspired him to become an Olympic medallist. Whereas for Vijender, it was Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore’s silver at Athens Olympics, which motivated him to be an Olympic medallist.

Our coach always told Yogeshwar Dutt and me that we have to win Olympic medals. But we had no idea what the Olympics meant or what an Olympic medal signified. Leander paes set an example in 1996 and that changed our complete focus as sportspersons. And now a new generation wants to emulate our success after seeing us on the medal podium,” recalled Sushil.

“I was 18-year-old when I qualified for Athens and I had to shave to look mature. I was blown over by the spectacle of the Olympics and had enjoyed myself thoroughly taking in the sights and sounds of the city. I saw how Rathore was celebrated after his medal and that told me that I had to win a medal to make a name. That was when I devoted myself to the target of winning an Olympic medal,” Vijender revealed.

The life of an Olympic medallist changes overnight and the same happened to Vijender and Sushil as they returned home amid a rousing reception and countless felicitation ceremonies.&nbsp;

“God has been kind. We both come from families that were not financially well-off and at times i am grateful to god for all that has come our way. The Olympic medal changed our lives and today young wrestlers who come from similar backgrounds look at us and believe that they too can emulate our success,” said Sushil.

“I have led life on my own terms. I won the Olympic medal due to my hard work and talent. I did not owe it to anyone and did what my heart told me,” said an ever-confident Vijender.

When asked how Indian sport changed between the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, Vijender said the phase brought a lot more limelight to Olympic athletes and Indian sport never looked back after that.

“A lot changed! There was space for Olympic athletes on the back pages that was usually reserved for cricket. The media interest grew and that sparked interest in a new generation of sport persons. Indian sport has not looked back ever since,” said Vijender.&nbsp;

The Rio Olympics witnessed India won just two medals with three Indians missing the podium narrowly at fourth. When asked whether the growth is a part of the legacy of Olympic medallists, Sushil said Olympic sports changed in India changed after 2008 and the youngsters blazing into the scene show how the gap has narrowed down completely.&nbsp;

“Olympic sports has changed in India after 2008. We are contending in sports that earlier we had no history in. Dipa Karmakar's 4th place finish in gymnastics at Rio was a bolt from the blue but it showed that the gap has narrowed down completely. We have world-class infrastructure now and that produces a new generation of champions,” Sushil concluded.

Napoli president raises concerns about Champions League tie vs Barcelona in Camp Nou

Rory McIlroy says he may not return to Europe from the United States this year due to the risks associated with travelling amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

McIlroy, who is in the field for the PGA Tour’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational this week, will play in the U.S. Open in September but has hinted he may not take part in the European Tour’s Scottish Open or BMW PGA Championship in October.

“I honestly don’t know if I see myself going back to Europe this year,” the world number two said. “I don’t know if I want to travel, I don’t know if I want to be exposed to more things and more people.

“I’m sort of taking it week by week. I’ve got my schedule planned up until the U.S. Open, which is obviously a couple weeks after the Tour Championship, and then I honestly have no idea what I’m going to do after that.”

McIlroy said that while he understood why Lee Westwood chose not to travel to San Francisco for the PGA Championship, he would return to Europe if there was a major on the schedule.

This year’s British Open, which was due to be held at Royal St George’s in Kent this month, was cancelled due to the pandemic.

“I understand their plight. I was just saying I don’t know if I would travel in the fall and go and play some of these other events in Europe, but if it was a major championship, it would probably be different,” he said.

The European Tour returned this month with back-to-back events in Austria, while the British Masters last week was the first of six tournaments on the ‘UK Swing’.

Juventus crashed to a humiliating 2-0 defeat at Cagliari on Wednesday, days after sealing their ninth consecutive Serie A title, prompting coach Maurizio Sarri to consider fielding his Under-23 team in Saturday's finale to conserve resources ahead of their Champions League challenge.

Cagliari's 20-year-old forward Luca Gagliano tapped in the opener eight minutes into his first Serie A match, beating veteran Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon to score his first top division goal.

And the young Italian then teed up Giovanni Simeone in first half stoppage time to give Cagliari their first win over Juventus in 11 years.

"The 40 goals conceded (this season) may be a concern, but tonight's game is not," said Sarri.&nbsp;

"We had nine injured and we came from a championship won 68 hours ago, so it was an atypical game that should be taken for what it is.&nbsp;

"We are the only ones in Europe who have played five games in 12 days, the League has created big problems for us.&nbsp;

"Let's see how we are tomorrow and if it is appropriate to line up the Under-23 team on Saturday against Roma to recover better."

Cristiano Ronaldo missed the chance to keep pace with Serie A's leading scorer Ciro Immobile, the Portuguese now four goals behind the Lazio forward's tally of 35 with one match remaining.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner had a goal ruled offside after 16 minutes and was denied twice by Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno as the 13th-placed Sardinians ended their eight-match winless run.

It was a worrying performance for Sarri's side, who have won just two of their last seven games, with key forwards Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa fighting for fitness ahead of the Champions League showdown with Lyon on August 7 in Turin, when they need to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit.

<h2>- Immobile on target -</h2>

&nbsp;

In Rome, Immobile moved to within one goal of equalling the Serie A single season scoring record as Lazio beat relegated Brescia 2-0 to stay in the race for second place.

Immobile struck eight minutes from time to close in on Gonzalo Higuain's record of 36 goals, scored for Napoli in 2015-16.

Lazio are fourth, equal on 78 points with third-placed Atalanta, who beat Parma 2-1 on Tuesday, and one adrift of Inter Milan who are second following their 2-0 win over Napoli.

Inter and Atalanta will go head-to-head this weekend with Lazio's last game at seventh-placed Napoli.

Immobile helped Joaquin Correa open the scoring after 16 minutes at the Stadio Olimpico, with Correa returning the favour late on.

Behind the top four, who are assured of Champions League football next season, Roma sealed their Europa League group stage berth with a 3-2 win at Torino.

Napoli have already secured their place as a result of their Italian Cup win while AC Milan, who will finish sixth, must go through the Europa League qualifying rounds despite beating Sampdoria 4-1.

<h2>- Zlatan AKA 'Benjamin Button' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Stefano Pioli's side remain four points behind Roma after Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice and set up a third in a dominating display against Samp.

The 38-year-old got his head to an Ante Rebic cross within four minutes in Genoa for his fastest goal in the Italian top flight, before nodding the ball across for Hakan Calhanoglu to add the second six minutes after the break.&nbsp;

Turkish winger Calhanoglu provided the cross which allowed Ibrahimovic to add his second of the night.&nbsp;

Leao added a fourth in injury time as Milan extended their unbeaten run to 11 games.

Ibrahimovic has scored nine league goals since rejoining Milan in January.

The veteran brings his club tally to 51 goals for the club, combined with his previous stint between 2010 and 2012.

He also becomes the first player to have scored 50 goals for both Milan clubs, with 57 netted during his time at city rivals Inter from 2006 to 2009.

"Like Benjamin Button, I've always been young, never old," said Ibrahimovic of the film of a man who ages in reverse.

"They tell me I'm old and tired but I'm just warming up."

Lecce's bid for survival will go down to the final day after they came from behind to beat Udinese 2-1.&nbsp;

The southern club occupy the final relegation position but are now just one point behind 17th-placed Genoa, who were hammered 5-0 at Sassuolo.

Both Lecce and Genoa will face Parma and Hellas Verona respectively at the weekend hoping to avoid joining Brescia and SPAL in Serie B.

Sarri tempted to field Under-23 team as Juve crash to humiliating defeat

Fresh from two dominant triumphs, Lewis Hamilton will seek to complete an early-season hat-trick and extend his home wins record to seven without his usual impassioned supporters in "super weird" circumstances at this weekend's British Grand Prix.

The six-time world champion and current standings leader has always drawn energy from the big crowds that support him at Silverstone, but this year's event will be run behind closed doors in front of empty grandstands.

"The British Grand Prix is the best and that's particularly because of the fans –- thousands and thousands always turn up to create a great spectacle," said the Briton.

"So, it is going to be super weird to be there without them."

For Hamilton, that means no crowd-surfing celebrations and keeping his feet on the ground as he bids to add to his wins at the Styrian and Hungarian Grands Prix as the coronavirus-delayed 2020 season returns.

This Sunday's race will be the 71st British Grand Prix and 54th at Silverstone and is followed one week later by a race at the same venue to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the inaugural world championship event in 1950.

After his recent victories, and given his great record at Silverstone, Hamilton will start as favourite, but can expect a strong challenge from his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who won the season-opener in Austria.

Already the two 'black Arrows' drivers have demonstrated the clear supremacy of their unbeaten W11 cars, dubbed "the fastest F1 cars ever" by team chief Toto Wolff this week.

He said: "We will miss our fans at Silverstone –- but we know that they will be rooting for us from home so we are determined to show our gratitude by putting on a great show.

"These are the fastest F1 cars ever built. They have broken the track records at both Spielberg and Budapest and it will be thrilling to see them on the iconic Silverstone circuit."

<h2>- Reliability 'crucial' -</h2>

The high-speed track's demanding and fast corners are expected to suit the Mercedes cars, but Wolff said he is taking nothing for granted.

"We've had a good start to the season," he said. "We resolved the issues that troubled us on the first weekend, won three out of three races and scored a good amount of points, but they highlighted a crucial factor -- the importance of reliability in this shortened season.

"We're one of only two teams that have finished all the races with both cars this year and we know how quickly a DNF (did not finish) can make a points lead disappear."

Arriving at Silverstone, Hamilton leads Bottas by five points with Max Verstappen of Red Bull third, 30 points adrift, but hoping to close the gap.

The Racing Point team's base is only a few hundred metres from the circuit entrance and, after demonstrating their speed and potential in Austria and Hungary, they hope to be in a scrap with Red Bull to secure a podium finish before Renault lodge another expected protest at the integrity of their 'pink Mercedes' car.

Ferrari, the only team to have interrupted Mercedes' supremacy at Silverstone in recent years, when Sebastian Vettel triumphed in 2018, are likely to continue their struggle for competitive form after a lacklustre start to 2020.

Vettel, in his final season at Ferrari, has this year emerged as a close supporter of Hamilton in backing the sport's anti-racism stance and the wider Black Lives Matter movement, which has not seen clear and unambiguous backing from the drivers.

Hamilton called for more unity and leadership on the issue following a confused and muddled pre-race 'taking the knee' ceremony in Hungary.

McLaren's Lando Norris, 20, said this week that the drivers would react and he expected to see "a better structure and a better plan in place" than at previous weekends.

The Briton suggested that Formula One management would be allocating proper time for a ceremony prior to the national anthem.

Hamilton eyes 'super weird' seventh Silverstone triumph

Frank Lampard has set his sights on capping an impressive first season as Chelsea manager by leading the Blues to FA Cup glory against Arsenal on Saturday.

Lampard enjoyed four FA Cup final victories as a Chelsea player, but getting his hands on the first trophy of his nascent managerial career would be an even more significant moment for the 42-year-old.

Having led Chelsea into next season's Champions League via a top four finish in the Premier League, Lampard heads to Wembley surfing a wave of positivity.

It is a testament to Lampard's acumen that, in just his second season as a manager, he has Chelsea positioned as an emerging force just 12 months after the club was in turmoil.

When Lampard arrived at Stamford Bridge in June 2019 after one season as boss of second tier Derby, he carried the good wishes of supporters who idolised him during his glittering 13-year spell with the club.

But there were many pundits who doubted whether Lampard was the right man to get Chelsea back on track following the turbulent reign of Maurizio Sarri.

The taciturn Sarri fell out with several of Chelsea's stars, alienating them with his monotonous training regime and inflexible tactics.

Fixing the fractures in Chelsea's dressing room wasn't the only problem facing Lampard, who also had to deal with the club's transfer ban last summer and the sale of Belgium playmaker Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.&nbsp;

Even for an experienced boss, it would have been a daunting situation, but Lampard has risen to the challenge.

"There were a lot of unknowns when I came in, could we move forward without Eden Hazard? We knew we had lost a massive player," Lampard said.

"We've a real spirit within the group now and it's a real team effort now."

With his hands tied by the transfer embargo, Lampard was compelled to give some of the club's youngsters a chance to prove their worth.

That they responded so tenaciously and with such verve was a tribute to Lampard's influence.

The energy and optimism provided by Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James, Billy Gilmour and Fikayo Tomori gave the entire club a jolt of adrenaline.

A swaggering 5-2 win at Wolves in September served notice that Lampard and his young prodigies wouldn't be out of their depth, while a mature 1-0 Champions League win at Ajax showed they could handle Europe's elite.

<h2>- Midas touch -</h2>

Lampard's midas touch hasn't been restricted to the young guns.

He coaxed consistency from Willian and brought Olivier Giroud back into the fold after the French striker had appeared set to leave in January.

Exiled in the first half of the season, Giroud's prolific form since the coronavirus hiatus -- seven goals in 10 matches in all competitions -- played a key role in Chelsea holding onto their top four berth.

"What we've done this season is take the opportunity to bring in the younger players and improve the existing players," Lampard said.

At a club where owner Roman Abramovich dispenses with managers in ruthless fashion, Lampard showed he wasn't intimidated by twice dropping error-prone goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga despite the club's fears it could harm his future transfer value.

Lampard's furious response to perceived antagonism from Liverpool's coaching staff during their recent clash at Anfield was another sign he isn't to be trifled with.

While Chelsea's progress under Lampard has been undeniable, they still lost 12 times in the league for only the second time since Abramovich bought the club in 2003.

Unable to fix Chelsea's defensive frailties and often frustrated by their lack of cutting edge, Lampard has been busy in the transfer market and more new signings are on the way.

Lampard needs Leipzig striker Timo Werner and Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech to hit the ground running next season.

He has also been linked with Manchester United keeper Dean Henderson, West Ham's Declan Rice and Bayer Leverkusen's Kai Havertz as he tries to bridge the 33-point gap to Liverpool.

"The challenge now is to see what more we can do next season," Lampard said.

Lampard aims to cap Chelsea comeback with FA Cup glory

Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne has made a significant impact in the Aussie side since making his Test debut against Pakistan in October 2018. Since then he has scored 1459 runs in 14 Tests at a staggering average of 63.43 while becoming a vital part of the Australian batting line-up. In ODIs, Labuschagne has already hammered a century and couple of 50s in just seven matches making him one of the hottest property in world cricket. However, the T20 platform still remains untouched for the youngster.&nbsp;

Having played just 10 matches in the Big Bash League for Brisbane Heat, Labuschagne is yet to make his T20I debut for Australia. However, he wants to become a mainstay for Australia across formats if the hectic schedule permits him to do so.&nbsp;

When asked about whom he wants to emulate in becoming consistent across all three formats, Labuschagne named Steve Smith, Virat Kohli and David Warner for their ability to switch their mindset and carry forward their form in whatever format they are playing.

“It is really important in modern day cricket to be able to switch in between format to format. It’s definitely something I personally want – just stay ready – and obviously you have to do some things differently in your preparations and the way you prepare for a game. All and all, it is a massive part of the game. You look at guys like Virat Kohli, whose able to switch between all three formats; Steve Smith and David Warner, and have success. Consistently there is a benchmark. And the target is to hit those standards,” Labuschagne told WION in an exclusive interview.

“Absolutely, I definitely want to be playing all three formats. For me it doesn’t matter where my opportunity comes and I am playing a T20 game then it is important for me to make sure that I am understanding my role within that team and how I want to approach that format of the game. Like you said, I haven’t played too many T20 games, but with the schedule I don’t think I am going to play too many either. So for me, it is about learning in ODI cricket and making sure that I am ready to grab any opportunity that come my way,” the No. 3 ranked ICC Test batsman added.&nbsp;

The biggest challenge for Australia after the resumption of cricket post-COVID will be the forthcoming four-match Test series against India, scheduled to start in December. Labuschagne said he was excited to face India again while adding it is going to be a spectacle with two of the best Test nations facing each other in the longest format of the game.&nbsp;

“I can’t wait, I can’t wait for it to start! Very excited for it to get underway. Two of the best Test nations in the world going at it. That’s what we want to see. That’s what people want to see. Not only me but the whole team is excited for that challenge. Two good teams, two good bowling attacks coming head-to-head, what’s not to like!,” Labuschagne said.

However, the T20 platform still remains untouched for the youngster. Having played just 10 matches in the Big Bash League for Brisbane Heat, Labuschagne is yet to make his T20I debut for Australia. However, he wants to become a mainstay for Australia across formats if the hectic schedule permits him to do so. When asked about whom he wants to emulate in becoming consistent across all three formats, Labuschagne named Steve Smith, Virat Kohli and David Warner for their ability to switch their mindset and carry forward their form in whatever format they are playing. × ALSO READ: Exclusive | Marnus Labuschagne: Thriving to be the best “It is really important in modern day cricket to be able to switch in between format to format. “Absolutely, I definitely want to be playing all three formats. So for me, it is about learning in ODI cricket and making sure that I am ready to grab any opportunity that come my way,” the No. 3 ranked ICC Test batsman added. The biggest challenge for Australia after the resumption of cricket post-COVID will be the forthcoming four-match Test series against India, scheduled to start in December. Labuschagne said he was excited to face India again while adding it is going to be a spectacle with two of the best Test nations facing each other in the longest format of the game.

Manchester City are all set to sign defender Nathan Ake from Bournemouth after agreeing a £41 million ($53 million) deal. Man City reportedly negotiated a £40 million transfer fee with the Cherries, who got relegated to the Championship, with the deal potentially rising by £1 million depending on the clauses. Man City have reportedly agreed a deal for 20-year-old Spanish winger Ferran Torres from Valencia.

Ake’s arrival at the Etihad Stadium comes after the Blues witnessed a poor season defensively after Vincent Kompany’s departure to Anderlecht last year. Aymeric Laporte, who had endured a long-term injury, was the standout centre-back for Man City but the poor form of John Stones and Nicholas Otamendi, forced Pep Guardiola to play Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho and youngster Eric Garcia at the back.

City never looked settled and the weakness played a crucial role in Liverpool ending their two-year reign as Premier League winners.

Ake has already capped 13 times by the Netherlands and missed Bournemouth’s final three Premier League matches after suffering a groin injury against Leicester in mid-July.

Asked if Ake may have made his final appearance for Bournemouth after the Leicester game, Howe replied: "I think it would be silly of me to comment on that, to be honest, at this moment in time.

"I think next season and everything beyond it will take care of itself."

Young players have been physically abused and left without schooling at NBA basketball academies in China, which were described as "sweat camp(s) for athletes", an ESPN report said.

Multiple coaches have complained about physical punishment at the academies including a facility in Xinjiang, the region where China is accused of holding more than a million members of ethnic minorities in internment camps.

The NBA says it cut ties last year with Xinjiang, but the world's most popular basketball league continues to operate academies in Shandong and Zhejiang provinces, in sports facilities run by the Chinese government.

One former coach said he saw a Chinese counterpart hurl a ball into a young player's face and "kick him in the gut" according to the ESPN investigation.

"Imagine you have a kid who's 13, 14 years old, and you've got a grown coach who is 40 years old hitting your kid," the coach was quoted as saying. "We're part of that. The NBA is part of that."

NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum told ESPN that only a "handful" of complaints about abuse had been received -- but added that the league is "re-evaluating" the academy program.

"One of the lessons that we've learned here is that we do need to have more direct oversight and the ability to make staffing changes when appropriate," Tatum said.

"We don't have oversight of the local coaches, of the academic programs or the living conditions," he added. "It's fair to say we were less involved than we wanted to be."

The report, by Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Steve Fainaru and his brother Mark Fainaru-Wada, who covered the BALCO steroid scandal, comes at a time of fraught relations between the NBA and China.

State broadcaster CCTV stopped screening NBA games last year after a Houston Rockets executive tweeted in support of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.&nbsp;

The NBA, which will restart its coronavirus-halted season later Thursday, says the row has cost it hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenues.

&nbsp;

The NBA began launching international academies in 2016, placing three in China. The aim was to "find another Yao", former employees told ESPN, referring to China's towering former Rockets center Yao Ming.

But the Chinese project was "fundamentally flawed" according to Bruce Palmer, a former technical director at a private basketball school in China who was hired by the NBA to evaluate the academies.

The main problems were that NBA employees were placed under Chinese authority, and that the league was prevented from working with China's elite players, Palmer said.

"We were basically working for the Chinese government," one former coach was quoted as saying.

According to ESPN, one coach requested a transfer after seeing Chinese coaches hit teenage players, while another left because he couldn't stomach the lack of education.

"I couldn't continue to show up every day, looking at these kids and knowing they would end up being taxi drivers," told ESPN.

Education was intended as a central plank of the academies, but no formal schooling was provided by the Chinese sport bureaus, the report said.

It detailed cramped living conditions at the Xinjiang academy, where rooms meant for two players were accommodating up to 10, sleeping in bunk beds.

Players trained two or three times a day and had few extracurricular activities, ESPN said, adding that teenagers as young as 13 were often left unsupervised.

One expert quoted in the report pointed out that physical punishment was common among sports coaches in China, underlining a cultural difference with the West.

"For most of the older generation, even my grandparents, they take corporal punishment for granted and even see it as an expression of love and care," said Jinming Zheng, an assistant professor of sports management at Northumbria University in England.

"The older generation still sees it as an integral part of training."

There will be no fans allowed inside the stadiums, in the beginning of much-awaited <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 </a>with the commentators sitting six feet apart in studios. Dugouts will be less crowded with not more than 15 players in the dressing room.

While the BCCI is still awaiting government’s approval to shift IPL 2020 to the UAE, Emirates Cricket Board has confirmed that it will be hosting the event after receiving the request from the Indian board.

As per a report in The Indian Express, a BCCI official has said that not just the players, their wives and girlfriends (WAGs) and franchise owners will have to follow all the norms for the ‘bio-bubble’ that will be created for IPL 2020.&nbsp;

“Once they are in the bio-bubble, no one can break it and rejoin,” the official said.

“The BCCI will not decide whether WAGs and family members can travel with the players, we have left it to the franchises. But we have put out a protocol in which everyone, even team bus drivers, can’t leave the bio-bubble,” the official said. “The SOP will be handed over to the franchises once we have a meeting with them next week. If they have any grievances, they can come back to the board and we will discuss it.”
