The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to lose over INR 2000 crore (US$ 217 million) of the broadcast and sponsorship money from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, which was indefinitely postponed on Tuesday owing to a rise in COVID-19 cases across teams.

The BCCI was forced to postpone the IPL 2021 after multiple cases of COVID-19 were reported among players and support staff from Ahmedabad and New Delhi in the last couple of days.

“We would be losing anything between Rs 2000 to Rs 2500 crore for the midway postponement of this season. I would say something in the range of Rs 2200 crore will be closer to accurate estimation,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The 60-match T20 tournament was set to conclude on May 30 in Ahmedabad. However, the postponement came after 29 completed matches as the dreaded virus halts the T20 tournament.

The biggest deficit for the BCCI is the money from Star Sports – for the broadcast rights – of the tournament.

If the host broadcaster pays the amount on a per match basis then it would be around INR 1580 crore out of the INR 3270 crore for the full tournament.

If Star pays per match, then the amount for 29 matches would be Rs 1580 crore approximately out of what would have been Rs 3270 crore for a full tournament. This means a loss of Rs 1690 crore for the Board.

Similarly, the BCCI is likely to get less than the half amount agreed with mobile manufacturers VIVO – IPL’s title sponsors. Additionally, more sponsors like Unacademy, Dream11, CRed, Upstox, and Tata Motors, who pay in the range of Rs 120 crore each. Some subsidiary sponsors are also there.

“Slash all the payments by half or a bit less and you will be reaching a loss in the range of 2200 crore. The actual losses could be much more but this is a back of the hand calculation for the season,” the official said.

IPL 2021 suspended indefinitely owing to COVID-19 cases across teams

England's Premier League said it was drawing up a new owners' charter designed to avoid future attempts to join a breakaway European Super League (ESL) as police launched an investigation into the protest that caused the postponement of Manchester United's match against Liverpool.

Fans invaded Old Trafford and ran onto the pitch Sunday as part of a demonstration against United's owners, the US-based Glazer family. Greater Manchester Police said one of their officers required emergency hospital treatment.

Anger towards the Glazers has been reignited by United's part in the failed ESL project, which collapsed within 48 hours last month after a backlash from fans, players, governments and governing bodies.

The ESL sought to guarantee top level European football for 15 founder members every season without the need to qualify on the pitch.

There have been calls for all six English clubs involved in the formation of the ESL -- Arsenal Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur -- to face points penalties.

The Premier League said Monday it was "determined" to "hold those clubs accountable for their decisions and actions".

It also announced plans for a new charter, with all club owners signing up to a rule "committing them to the core principles" of the league, with breaches punished by "significant" sanctions.

"The events of the last two weeks have challenged the foundations and resolve of English football," the Premier League added.

"These measures are designed to stop the threat of breakaway leagues in the future."

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, speaking Monday during a campaign visit to the north-east English town of Hartlepool, where there is a parliamentary by-election on May 6, said: "I don't think it's a good idea to have disruptive behaviour, demonstrations of that kind.

"But on the other hand, I do understand people's strength of feeling.

"And I think that it's a good thing that we have been able to do things that make it pretty clear that the European Super League is not going to be appreciated by the people of this country, or by this government."

Hundreds of fans managed to make their way into the ground, chanting "we want Glazers out".

Large numbers of supporters had also gathered outside the stadium and there were clashes with police as they moved to disperse the crowd, with objects thrown at officers and horses.

Two officers were injured, with one "attacked with a bottle and sustaining a significant slash wound to his face, requiring emergency hospital treatment", according to a Greater Manchester Police statement.

A United statement issued Monday said reports protestors had been able to access the stadium and pitch via a gate opened by club staff were "completely incorrect".

United said what had happened was that some protestors had broken through security barriers before eventually opening an external door that let others through to the concourse area and the pitch, with another breach occurring when the door of a disability access lift was smashed.

- 'Condemn violence' -

The statement said the "majority of our fans have and will condemn criminal damage, along with any violence towards club staff, police or other fans".

But while United said they did not want peaceful demonstrators punished, they insisted they would work with police to identify those involved in criminal activity and would impose their "own sanctions" on any season ticket-holder or member identified.

Nevertheless, United stressed they "remain committed to dialogue and engagement with our fans through the Fans Forum and other appropriate channels".

Manchester City could have been crowned Premier League champions on Sunday had United lost the match.

The Premier League said a new date for the match would be announced "in due course".

"These measures are designed to stop the threat of breakaway leagues in the future." British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, speaking Monday during a campaign visit to the north-east English town of Hartlepool, where there is a parliamentary by-election on May 6, said: "I don't think it's a good idea to have disruptive behaviour, demonstrations of that kind. "But on the other hand, I do understand people's strength of feeling. "And I think that it's a good thing that we have been able to do things that make it pretty clear that the European Super League is not going to be appreciated by the people of this country, or by this government." Hundreds of fans managed to make their way into the ground, chanting "we want Glazers out". Premier League reveals plan to avoid Super League repeat as police probe United protest

Pep Guardiola on Monday called on his Manchester City players to control their emotions if they are to reach a first ever Champions League final as they take a 2-1 lead into the second leg of their semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

City came from behind with a stunning second-half performance in the French capital last week to take a giant step towards a goal they have been chasing ever since Sheikh Mansour's takeover in 2008 transformed the club's fortunes.

Guardiola has won the Champions League twice as a coach when in charge of Barcelona, but has failed to do so in the past 10 years as he has suffered numerous agonising exits from Europe's premier club competition as Barca, Bayern Munich and City boss.

City moved to the brink of sealing a third Premier League title in four years at the weekend and Guardiola urged his side to maintain the same focus they have all season to see off PSG on Tuesday.

“The second-leg of semi-final always the toughest game, more than the final. We have to control our emotions to do exactly what we have to do," said Guardiola at his pre-match press conference.

"You cannot play 90 minutes like we played in the second half (in Paris). I would love to but it won't happen.

“You have to understand it will be a big battle and we are going to suffer. They have to visualise that we are going to do it.

"What we have to do is not different to what we have done over the last seven months. Go out and play our game and win."

PSG are also dreaming of winning the Champions League for the first time, but if they are to progress to the final for a second consecutive season, they will need to score at least twice at the Etihad.

City have not conceded more than once in a Champions League game all season as the centre-back partnership of Ruben Dias and John Stones has eradicated the sort of defensive lapses that have cost Guardiola's men in previous years in this competition.

Stones admitted the English champions-elect have to remain wary of the "world class" talents of PSG star duo Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, but said City are confident of finally getting to the final

"I think (we are) quietly confident, we have to be. It is a big occasion for us as players and as a club, a chance to get into a Champions League final," said Stones.

"We have got to go into it where we left off. We are really confident and excited for the challenge ahead."

Mbappe is an injury doubt after sitting out Saturday's 2-1 win over Lens due to a calf strain.

The French World Cup winner has travelled to Manchester with the rest of the PSG squad and Guardiola dismissed any suggestion he won't be available.

"He is going to play," added Guardiola. "I am looking forward to him playing, for the football and the game itself."

Raphael Varane is set to miss Real Madrid's crunch Champions League second leg against Chelsea on Wednesday after the club confirmed he has sustained an adductor injury.

Varane was taken off at half-time of Madrid's 2-0 win over Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday and the French defender is now expected to sit out the game at Stamford Bridge.

Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Chelsea in last week's first leg at Valdebebas.

"After the tests carried out today on our player Raphael Varane by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he was diagnosed with an injury to the right adductor muscle," Real Madrid said in a statement on Monday.

Varane's injury is another major blow for Madrid, who are also in the heat of La Liga's title race, with a pivotal match at home to Sevilla coming up on Sunday.

Zinedine Zidane's side are two points behind Atletico Madrid, with four games left to play.

Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez will likely form the central defensive partnership against Chelsea after they excelled while Varane was recently absent due to a positive test for Covid-19.

Sergio Ramos is also nearing a return to fitness following a calf injury, but it would be a surprise if the 35-year-old was thrown back in against Chelsea, after more than a month out.

Delhi Capitals told to quarantine as COVID-19 hits IPL 2021

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was rocked on Monday when two players from Kolkata Knight Riders – Varun Chakaravarthy and Sandeep Warrier – tested positive for COVID-19. IPL 2021: England players given choice to quit or carry on playing - Report

New Zealand have replaced reigning World champions England as the number one ranked side in the ODI rankings but England have consolidated their position at the top of the T20I table after the annual update carried out on Monday.

These updates eliminate results from 2017-18 and halve the weighting of matches played in 2019-20 which includes the 2019 World Cup.

New Zealand, who defeated Bangladesh 3-0 in their only ODI series during the past year, have advanced two slots in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings after gaining three rating points to reach an aggregate of 121. Australia are second with 118 points while India and England are both on 115, the former ahead on decimal points.

England’s slip down to fourth position comes in the second annual update since they won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at Lord’s in the summer of 2019. In the past 12 months, they have suffered 2-1 series losses to Australia and India, as well as an ODI loss to Ireland.

The latest update, which rates all matches played since May 2020 at 100 per cent and those of the previous two years at 50 per cent, sees Australia move up two places from fourth to second and India drop one place to third. The West Indies have overtaken Sri Lanka to ninth position.

The Netherlands have been allowed to retain their ranking despite only having played four ODIs during the new rating period, since their scheduled fixtures were postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

England remain the top-ranked side in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, extending their lead over India to five points. During this period, they drew a three-match series against Pakistan 1-1, defeated Australia 2-1 and South Africa 3-0 before losing an away series to India by a 3-2 margin.

New Zealand have also gained in the annual T20I update, moving up from fifth to third after series wins over the West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh. Australia have moved the other way, down from third to fifth.

In other movements at the top of the T20I rankings table, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have gained one place each to reach eighth and ninth positions, respectively, while the West Indies have dropped two places to 10th.

There has been no change of places in either format for Afghanistan, Pakistan or South Africa. Afghanistan are 10th in ODIs and seventh in T20Is, Pakistan are sixth in ODIs and fourth in T20Is while South Africa are fifth in ODIs and sixth in T20Is.

Despite the pandemic, 80 countries have played the requisite six T20Is over the past three years to remain in the rankings. Five countries have lost their ranking after the update – Gambia, Ghana, Hungary, Sierra Leone and Sweden.

The annual update to the Test rankings will be carried out following the conclusion of the ongoing Pakistan v Zimbabwe series.

Bangladesh players Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman might have to return to their country from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 sooner than planned. The development comes due to the quarantine rule imposed by the Bangladesh health ministry, Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the Bangladesh Cricket Board chief said on Monday.

The new quarantine rule by the Bangladesh health ministry, which came into effect from May 1, states that travelers coming from India and South Africa will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine period before resuming work. BCB will need special permission from the Directorate General of Health Services to avail any relaxation on the new rule.

Earlier, BCB had reduced the quarantine for their foreign coaching staff and cricketers but the scale of the second COVID-19 wave reduces the chances of the same happening this time.

An inquiry into Australian gymnastics has found evidence of widespread abuse, sexism, racism and stringent coaching practices, according to a report published on Monday.

The Australian Human Rights Commission said that it found a culture that tolerated emotional, physical, verbal and sexual including body-shaming directed at young athletes over a decade. The development comes amid a “global reckoning” for the sport.

The commission, following the findings, recommended an investigation – completely independent – to look into specific abuse allegations while demanding formal apology from gymnastics authorities. It also called for stricter screening and a national register of coaches, who often have influence over vulnerable young women.

Gymnastics Australia called the findings "confronting" and said it "unreservedly apologises to all athletes and family members who have experienced any form of abuse" while promising to adopt all 12 recommendations.

The world of gymnastics has been left red-faced by the series of scandals in recent times.

In the United States, former team doctor Larry Nassar was found guilty of sexually assaulting at least 265 identified victims over two decades including star Simone Biles. Whereas in Britain, the accusations of abuses have hit the headlines. In Greece, former gymnasts complained of suffering decades of abuse at the hands of one of their coaches.

The Australian inquiry was conducted after local athletes took to social media to comment on the documentary “Athlete A” which concerned the allegations on Nassar.

Among the Australians sharing their own negative experiences was Yasmin Collier, who spoke of having to strip naked in front of a male adult masseuse.

The Australian commission received hundreds of submissions before delivering its final report.

"While many athletes have had positive experiences and relationships with their coaches, there was a persistent use of 'authoritarian' or highly disciplinary coaching styles," their report said.

"A focus on 'winning-at-all-costs' and an acceptance of negative and abusive coaching behaviors have resulted in the silencing of the athlete voice and an increased risk of abuse and harm with significant short and long term impacts to gymnasts," it stated.

Sri Lanka spinner Praveen Jayawickrama enjoyed a dream debut as he claimed 11 wickets to seal a 209-run victory over Bangladesh in the second Test at Pallekele on Monday.

Chasing a daunting 437 to win, Bangladesh were dismissed for 227 in the first session of the final day after resuming at 177-5 as Sri Lanka wrapped up the match, and the series 1-0, after 90 minutes of play.

The 22-year-old left-armer Jayawickrama was named player of the match after claiming 11-178 on his first Test appearance as he added five second-innings wickets to his six in the first.

Off-spinner Ramesh Mendis dismissed four batsmen as all 10 Bangladesh second-innings wickets were taken by slow bowlers.

Jayawickrama struck in the third over on Monday, taking his ninth wicket of the match when he trapped Liton Das lbw with a ball that went straight on and setting a Sri Lankan record for a Test debutant, surpassing Akila Dananjaya's 8-44 against the same opposition in Dhaka in 2018.

Mendis was replaced after a 15-over spell during which he took two wickets and the bowling change worked immediately as part-time spinner Dhananjaya de Silva struck with his second delivery.

Taijul Islam, on two, attempted a late cut, but only managed to edge it to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella.

Mendis returned to have Taskin Ahmed caught by Dimuth Karunaratne off a top edge as the fielder moved to his left from cover point.

Jayawickrama then mopped up the tail. Mehidy Hasan fell first to take the young bowler's match haul into double figures, before Jayawickrama sealed the Test and the series three balls later when he trapped Abu Jayed leg before.

Jayawickrama is the 16th Test cricketer to take 10 wickets or more on debut but only the second this century after Australia's Jason Krejza, who took 12 wickets against India at Nagpur in 2008.

Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne was named player of the two-match series for scoring 428 runs in three innings.

The first Test was drawn after an avalanche of runs, the two sides scoring 1,289 for the loss of just 17 wickets over the five days.

Lewis Hamilton delivered a flawless drive in his Mercedes to win the Portuguese Grand Prix on Sunday from his arch title rival Max Verstappen.

Seven-time world champion Hamilton's 97th Grand Prix triumph extended his early season lead over Red Bull's Verstappen in the Formula One drivers' standings to eight points.

In third place in Portimao was pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas in the other Mercedes with Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull in fourth.

"That was such a tough race physically and mentally. I didn't get a good start and also lost out at the restart but it was a great result in the end," said Hamilton.

"Today wasn't all perfect and we need to get ready now for the quick turnaround for Spain."

At a sun-drenched Algarve International Circuit Bottas led Hamilton from the two Red Bulls into the first corner.

By the end of lap one it was the safety car which led after the two Alfa Romeos collided, with Kimi Raikkonen's front wing littered across the straight after clipping Antonio Giovinazzi's car.

Bottas carefully controlled the rolling restart on lap seven but in his rearview mirror he will have seen Verstappen charge past Hamilton and into second.

- 'Sitting duck' -

"That a boy" was the pleased reaction on the team radio from the Red Bull pits.

But four laps later and a mistake by the Dutchman on turn 14 let Hamilton regain second, darting past on the inside with Verstappen snapping: "I'm just a sitting duck on the straight. It's unbelievable."

Hamilton hit the front with a superb sweeping move past Bottas at the start of lap 20, quickly establishing daylight between the Mercedes men.

Verstappen was the first of the leading group to pit on lap 36, with Bottas next, followed by Hamilton, with Perez yet to change tyres, in front.

With 13 laps left Hamilton pushed past Perez to regain control of the third leg of the record 23-race season, and from there the race was his to lose.

"I think Max made a mistake at some point and that was perfect. With Valtteri I had to make the move early on before the tyres were destroyed and I just managed to get him at turn one. Right on my limit. Great race," added Hamilton.

"We were not on top of it here but we'll see what we can do in Barcelona," said Verstappen, referring to next weekend's race in Spain.

Intrigue in the closing stages surrounded the question of who would end up with a potentially crucial point for the fastest lap.

Verstappen thought he'd clinched it only for his effort to be ruled out due to track limits with Bottas eventually taking the honours.

The Red Bulls are emerging as serious challengers to Mercedes' supremacy but the world champions have evidently worked hard to redress any imbalance in performance between the two teams.

And after three legs of the season it is Hamilton in his quest for a record eighth world crown that has won twice, adding this to his opening success in Bahrain, with Verstappen the winner in Imola.

Sitting third in the drivers' standings is Lando Norris for resurgent McLaren after the Briton took fifth on Sunday.

He came in ahead of the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, with the Alpines of Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso, Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) and the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly completing the top 10.

Large numbers of supporters had also gathered outside the stadium and there were clashes with police as they moved in to disperse the crowd.

"Following discussion between the police, the Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today," United said in a statement.

"Our fans are passionate about Manchester United and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.

"However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff and the police in danger. We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations."

The match had been due to start at 1630 local time (1530GMT), but had been delayed by over an hour before the decision to call the match off was confirmed.

"The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance," the Premier League said in a statement.

"We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches.

"Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification."

Manchester City could have been crowned Premier League champions on Sunday had United lost the match.

No rearranged date has yet been agreed for the fixture to be played.

"Liverpool Football Club was in full agreement with the decision to postpone today’s fixture as a result of ongoing events at Old Trafford and the surrounding area," Liverpool said in a statement.

"It is our position that public safety must be the number one factor in any such decision, with the ability to provide a secure environment for the participants, staff and officials being a particular priority.

"It was clearly not possible for this to be guaranteed today due to a situation which escalated rapidly."

- Anger reignited -

Anger towards the Glazers has been reignited by United's part in a failed European Super League (ESL) project, that collapsed within 48 hours last month due to a backlash from fans, players, governments and governing bodies.

United and Liverpool were reportedly two of the leading drivers behind the project that sought to guarantee top level European football for 15 founder members every season without the need to qualify on the pitch.

In a rare public statement, United co-chairman Joel Glazer apologised to fans last month for signing up to the ESL.

"You made very clear your opposition to the European Super League, and we have listened. We got it wrong, and we want to show that we can put things right," he said.

United fans also breached security at their club's training ground in the days after the ESL proposals were made public to protest against the Glazers.

The Americans have owned United since a controversial leveraged takeover in 2005 saddled the club with hundreds of millions of pounds worth of debt.

As the English giants have paid off huge interest payments, the Glazers have still regularly drawn out millions in dividends from their shares.

United fans wore green and gold colours to matches early in the Glazers' reign, the colours of Newton Heath, the club founded in 1878 that eventually became Manchester United 24 years later, as a sign of protest.

Green and gold scarves and flares were back at Old Trafford on Sunday, while there were a number of banners aimed at the Glazers.

United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has already announced he will be leaving his role by the end of the year amid the fallout from the failed ESL project.

"There's huge discontent, not just across Manchester United fans, but I think for football fans up and down the country and I think they are just saying enough is enough," former United captain Gary Neville told Sky Sports.

IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals humble Punjab Kings with well-constructed chase

Delhi Capitals on Sunday continued their dominating run of form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as they defeated Punjab Kings by seven wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. DC, with the win, move atop the IPL 2021 standings as they impress yet again under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant.

Batting first, Punjab Kings, without KL Rahul, lost opener Prabhsimran Singh for 12 early in the innings. Chris Gayle, who smashed a six and four, was sent packing by Kagiso Rabada for 13. Making his IPL debut, world number one T20I batsman Dawid Malan struggled during his stay on the pitch and was dismissed by Axar Patel after a watchful 26 off 26 balls.

The middle-order and lower-middle order for PBKS failed with the likes of Deepak Hooda (1), Shahrukh Khan (4), Chris Jordan (2) falling cheaply as DC bowlers ran riot. However, Mayank continued to flourish and scored a breathtaking 99 not-out off 58 deliveries laced by eight boundaries and four sixes, to take Punjab Kings to a competitive total of 166/6 in 20 overs.

IPL 2021: Shikhar Dhawan dominates again as Delhi Capitals defeat Punjab Kings

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen was full of praise for Mayank Agarwal, who slammed an unbeaten 99 on his captaincy debut for Punjab Kings, in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match against Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

PBKS captain KL Rahul was rushed to the hospital for surgery after the batsman was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and Mayank was named the stand-in captain for the Punjab outfit. Mayank didn’t disappoint as he led his troops from the front and smashed 99 not-out off 58 deliveries to help PBKS post 166/6 in 20 overs.

Mayank’s 99-run knock in 58 balls is the second-best score on a captaincy debut in IPL – next to Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson’s score of 119 which came against Punjab Kings earlier in IPL 2021.

"I think I said on commentary that captaincy can go one of two ways. You can either deal with it, that weight of expectations that clearly is just thrown straight amongst what you got to do for your team. It can create pressure, you start to worry about your players, your team," Pietersen said on Star Sports.

"He also did not play the previous game and KL Rahul did so well so there has been so much pressure leading into this game. Yes, he has been playing so well and he is a quality player. But sometimes you do question yourself," he added.

Inter Milan clinched the Serie A title for the first time since 2010 on Sunday when nearest rivals Atalanta were held 1-1 at Sassuolo.

Atalanta played most of the match a man down after goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini saw red after 22 minutes in the Mapei Stadium.

Luis Muriel missed a late penalty that could have given Atalanta a win that would have put Inter's celebrations on hold but the second-placed Bergamo side are now 13 points behind Inter with four games remaining.

Inter, who beat Crotone 2-0 on Saturday, needed Atalanta to drop points in Emilia-Romagna to claim the title.

Juventus have been denied a 10th straight league title and are now fighting for a Champions League spot.

Atalanta are equal on 69 points with third-placed AC Milan, who are two points ahead of Napoli.

Juventus are fifth before they play later Sunday at Udinese.

In Emilia-Romagna, Robin Gosens scored 10 minutes after Collini's sending off for bringing down Jeremie Boga.

Domenico Berardi pulled Sassuolo level from the penalty spot seven minutes after the break.

Sassuolo also played the final quarter of an hour a man down after Brazilian defender Marlon was sent off for a second yellow card.

But Sassuolo keeper Andrea Consigli denied Muriel.

Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday continued their torrid run of form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as the franchise lost their match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Kane Williamson replaced David Warner as the captain of SRH but it didn’t change the fortune of the side as they suffered a 55-run defeat to RR.

SRH dropped Warner from the playing XI but the batting line-up still failed to live up to the expectations. Kane Williamson was asked about whether Warner will be seen playing as a pure batsman in the upcoming matches in IPL 2021, to which the Kiwi said that they will have conversations around including him in the team while adding the Aussie is a world-class batsman.

Rajasthan Royals, riding on Jos Buttler’s maiden T20 century, posted a 220/3 in 20 overs as the Englishman hammered the highest score by a RR batsman in IPL. However, SRH were dull in their chase and could manage just 165/8 in 20 overs.

“A tough day. A very competitive total from RR. It was Jos' day and he was outstanding. With the bat, you do need to get a few things to go your way and when you're losing wickets it makes it all the harder to chase 220. We have had a lot of challenges over the last three weeks, but we need to make small adjustments and put in improved performances. Jos and Sanju were key, so we wanted Rashid to bowl as many deliveries as possible against them. It is a bit of character building for us, so we just need to swallow it and move ahead,” Williamson said in the post-match presentation on Star Sports.

“This game can change quickly and it is a game of fine lines. We just need to be clear of what we want to do each day. [On leaving the fifth bowler for the end] It wasn't the initial plan, but we wanted to use our resources and it was a decision we had to make. Those are the risks you need to take and not let the game just unfold. Exceptional batting from Rajasthan, you just have to tip your hats off to them. There are a number of leaders in the group. It's important we stay tight. And for us it about building as a side and make adjustments. Rather than over-search for the win, we just have to be clear about how we need to operate. Warner is a world-class player, the cards are on the table and I am sure there are a number of conversations to be had,” he added.

'World-class player': Kane Williamson opens up on David Warner's exclusion from SRH playing XI

Sunrisers Hyderabad not only removed David Warner as the captain of the team but also dropped him from the playing XI for the match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday. Former India batsman Ajay Jadeja has that it felt like Warner was not in full control of the team while adding Kane Williamson is a better captain than the Aussie.

Warner has been a successful captain for Sunrisers Hyderabad and even led to the IPL trophy win in 2016 besides being the highest scorer in SRH history.

However, with results going against SRH in IPL 2021, the franchise decided to make whole-scale changes in the team in a bid to turn their fortunes around. SRH have lost five out of six matches in IPL 2021 so far.

"It was evident that SRH is being controlled by someone from the outside – coach, management, whoever. But the captain Warner was not in full control," Jadeja said on Cricbuzz.

Jos Buttler on Sunday smashed his first-ever T20 century and went on to shatter the record for the highest score in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by an Englishman during the match between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Buttler hammered 124 runs off just 64 deliveries – the highest total for Rajasthan Royals – as they set Sunrisers Hyderabad a target of 221 in what was a belter of a pitch to bat on.

The Englishman scored just 32 off his first 30 deliveries but hammered 92 runs off his next 34 laced with 11 fours and eight sixes.

Regarded as one of England’s best ever white-ball batsman, Buttler had never reached the century mark in the shortest format of the game. After his maiden century in T20 cricket, Buttler said he struggled to time the ball at the start of his innings and tried to hang in there before finding his mojo.

“Really enjoyed it. Great to spend time out there and have fun. I didn't find it easy at the start. I haven't been feeling in my best form for a while now. so a little bit of a struggle and just acceptance. I just tried to hang in there. At times I have been guilty of trying to get back into form too quickly and not give myself a chance. I just got better as the innings went on,” Buttler told Star Sports after the first innings.

“The mindset against Rashid was to just try and stay out there. He's had my number for a long time, so thankful to not get out to him. I have spent a lot of my career in the middle order where hundreds aren't easy to come by. At the top of the order you get a great chance. I finally will have Alastair Cook stop telling me that he has got one T20 hundred more than me (laughs). It is obviously a great score. We saw how MI chased it down yesterday, it is a small ground with a quick outfield and SRH have some fantastic players. We'll have to execute our plans really well,” the Rajasthan Royals batsman added.

IPL 2021: Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul admitted to hospital for appendicitis surgery

Christian Eriksen and Achraf Hakimi scored in the second half as Inter Milan beat Crotone 2-0 to move to the brink of the Serie A title on Saturday.

Antonio Conte's side are 13 points ahead of city rivals AC Milan who reclaimed second place with a 2-0 win over 18th-placed Benevento, with four games to play.

Inter can claim their first Scudetto since 2010 on Sunday if Atalanta, a further point adrift in third, fail to win at Sassuolo.

"We are succeeding in toppling a kingdom that had lasted for nine years," said former Juventus coach Conte, who led the Turin giants to the first three of their current run of nine consecutive league titles.

"We're aware that we can do something extraordinary because Inter haven't won a Scudetto in 11 years, and we're breaking up a dynasty. The lads deserve this joy, congratulations to them.

"We're a step away from making history."

Dane Eriksen came on as a substitute in the 65th minute and scored four minutes later, firing home a shot which took a deflection off Crotone defender Lisandro Magallan, from Romelu Lukaku's lay-off.

Lukaku had a goal ruled out before Hakimi struck a second in injury time.

"It's an important goal because it moves us closer to the title, but we still haven't won it yet," said Eriksen of just his second goal this campaign.

"If it proves to be the decisive goal, then obviously it'll be the most important one of the season. Every goal is important, but the one that takes you to your objective is extra special.

"Today, I came on as a substitute, and when you do this the aim is to make your mark: you want to shake things up. I'm happy that I managed to do so."

- Ibrahimovic return lifts Milan -

The match in Calabria pitted the Serie A leaders against the bottom team who were relegated as a result of the loss.

Both sides had chances in the first half with Adam Ounas threatening early for the hosts who lost defender Arkadiusz Reca to injury before the break.

Lukaku headed onto the post off a Stefano Sensi corner after 23 minutes.

There was a flurry of activity in front of the Crotone goal before the break with Alessandro Bastoni sending wide after connecting with a Nicolo Barella cross.

Lautaro Martinez's low shot hit the woodwork before home goalkeeper Alex Cordaz cleared a Sensi effort.

As Inter struggled to break through Conte sent on Eriksen, Ivan Perisic and Alexis Sanchez after 65 minutes.

And the substitutions paid off with Sanchez providing a back-heel flick for Lukaku who teed up Eriksen.

Lukaku missed a chance to add to his 21 goals this campaign with a goal ruled out with seven minutes to go for Perisic's offside position.

But Barella sent Moroccan Hakimi clear to beat Cordaz with his seventh goal this season to extend Inter's unbeaten run to 18 league games, and close to a 19th league crown.

"We'll watch the (Atalanta) game in our homes, in a serene way," continued Conte.

"For us what happens tomorrow is relative, we don't ask anything of anyone. We don't depend on others, especially after such a championship."

In the San Siro, Milan rallied from back-to-back defeats to move up from fifth to second and keep in the Champions League chase.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned from injury with Hakan Calhanoglu putting the home side ahead after six minutes following good work from Alexis Saelemaekers and Franck Kessie.

Benevento goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo got his foot to an Ibrahimovic goal-bound effort before the break, and again cleared from the Swede after the hour but Theo Hernandez was on hand to finish off the rebound.

Napoli are fourth equal on points with Juventus who drop to fifth before they play at Udinese on Sunday.

Inter could decide Juve's Champions League fate as they meet in the penultimate game in Turin in two weeks.

Mumbai Indians on Saturday defeated Chennai Super Kings by four wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi as the five-time IPL winners chased down a mammoth 219, courtesy of a herculean effort with the bat by Kieron Pollard.

Batting first, Chennai Super Kings posted a mammoth total of 218/4 in 20 overs with Ambati Rayudu standing out among others with a blistering knock of 72 off just 27 deliveries laced with four boundaries and seven sixes.

While opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (4) was dismissed for cheap by Trent Boult in what was a superb spell with the new ball, Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali scored 50 and 58 respectively to take CSK to 112 in just 10 overs. CSK lost du Plessis, Ali and Suresh Raina (2) in quick succession but the herculean knock by Rayudu supported by Ravindra Jadeja (22 not-out), helped CSK post a 218 – their highest total against arch-rivals MI.

Interestingly, Jasprit Bumrah conceded 56 runs against CSK in his four-over quota – the most expensive figure in IPL for the ace speedster. Kieron Pollard picked up two wickets for MI whereas Bumrah and Boult ended up with a scalp each.
Chasing 219, Mumbai Indians enjoyed a brisk start as openers Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock connected well early in the innings.

Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard smashed some lusty blows before Hardik Pandya smashed a few in a brief cameo. However, Pollard continued with his blitz and took MI over the winning line with a stunning knock of 87 not-out of 34 balls.
CSK bowlers did well to change till the 15-over mark but lost the plot as soon as Pollard started dominating the show.
