Valtteri Bottas took pole position for the Portuguese Grand Prix with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton completing a Mercedes front-row lockout in qualifying on Saturday.

Hamilton's pursuit of a 100th pole at the track where last year he notched up his record 92nd win was delayed when Bottas earned the 17th of his career.

"It's a good feeling to be on pole," said Bottas after a final qualifying session lap of 1min 18.348sec.

He added: "Feels like it's been a while. It's been a weak point for me in the first two races. The team have been working hard all weekend and we have a good position for tomorrow."

Bottas' performance was well-timed after he had qualified third in the season-opener in Bahrain but then a lowly eighth at Emilia-Romagna.

His time was just 0.007sec faster than Hamilton.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, one point off Hamilton in the drivers' standings, took third on Sunday's grid with his teammate Sergio Perez alongside him on the second row in Portimao.

Verstappen had in fact bettered Bottas' time but had his 1min 18.209sec run scrubbed out after exceeding track limits.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz came in fifth ahead of the Alpine of Esteban Ocon, Lando Norris, in a McLaren, and Charles Leclerc in the second Ferrari.

Hamilton paid tribute to Bottas "and our team for us both to be on the front row".

"It was not expected. We have to be happy for that, it was not the perfect lap but I gave it everything.

"You can never be satisfied, we exist to keep moving forward but I'm happy with what we're doing and the steps we're taking."

Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff admitted his world champion team is making steady qualifying improvements.

"I'm not sure we had the fastest car but we have improved a lot," he said.&nbsp;

"We are catching up (Red Bull) in qualifying, we are maybe at the same level, and I think we have a good car for racing."

<h2>- Red Bull 'not too far off' -</h2>

Hamilton narrowly leads the 2021 championship after he won the opener in Bahrain before Dutch rival Verstappen hit back at Imola.

"Third is of course not what we wanted but it's not too bad after I had a Q3 lap time deleted, which would actually have put us fastest," said Verstappen.

"We struggled with the balance in Q1 and Q2 because of the track surface, and everyone is chasing grip, but we got to a decent level in Q3 so I don't think we are too far off."

Bottas' last outing at Imola was one to forget as he and Williams driver George Russell collided at 300km/h.

Both cars were wrecked that day and Russell was furious with the Finn before the pair continued their clash off the track with a bitter war of words.

Russell will start on the sixth row on Sunday with Pierre Gasly, in an AlphaTauri, and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, in an Aston Martin, ahead of him.

"It's our best qualifying position in three years so I'm really proud," said Russell.

"We all have our responsibilities, and as a team we did a really good job.

"Tomorrow we've got to keep moving forward. We have a good race car –- it's fast on the straights, so let's see what we can do."

The Haas pair of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin start at the back.

Pollard powers Mumbai Indians to a thrilling win over Chennai Super Kings

Manchester City are on the brink of clinching the Premier League title after a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace, while Brighton virtually assured their survival with victory over Leeds on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's side moved 13 points clear at the top thanks to second-half goals from Sergio Aguero and Ferran Torres at Selhurst Park.

City will be crowned English champions for the third time in four seasons if second-placed Manchester United lose at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

If United avoid defeat, City can seal the title with a victory against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium next Saturday.

It is a matter of when, not if, City regain the title they surrendered to Liverpool last season.

They shook off a tepid first half in south London and put Palace to the sword with two goals in the space of 84 seconds.

Aguero, making only his sixth league start in an injury-plagued season, broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when he ran onto Benjamin Mendy's long pass and slammed a half-volley into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

It was only Aguero's fourth goal of what will be his final season with City after the club's record scorer announced he will leave in the close-season.

City hope Torres will be part of a new generation of stars capable of building on the foundations laid by the likes of Aguero.

The Spanish forward gave a glimpse of his potential when he fired home from the edge of the area after a flowing City attack in the 59th minute.

That was enough to seal an 11th successive away victory in the Premier League, equalling the English top-flight record.

City were languishing in 14th place in late November but a blistering run since then has carried them to the brink of a third title in four seasons.

<h2>- 'Put it in the fridge' -</h2>

The treble chasers could also add the Champions League to that haul.

On Tuesday, City will attempt to reach their first ever Champions League final when they defend a 2-1 lead in the semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

"We can start to think about it and put it in the fridge. The Premier League is already there, it is in our hands. We need one more victory," Guardiola said.

"I'm absolutely delighted with that after the Champions League. We could not play with much rhythm. We struggled a little bit but in the second half we deserved it.

"I will check on the Liverpool game. It's in our hands and now we will give everything to beat PSG."

At the Amex Stadium, Brighton broke a three-game goal drought when they took the lead through Pascal Gross's 14th minute penalty.

Ezgjan Alioski was penalised for bringing down Danny Welbeck and Gross found the bottom corner with the resulting spot-kick.

Graham Potter's side struck again through Danny Welbeck's excellent solo effort in the 79th minute to seal a 2-0 win.

Brighton are now 10 points clear of the relegation zone with four games left.

Later on Saturday, Chelsea can cement their hold on fourth place and push Fulham closer to relegation with a win in the west London derby at Stamford Bridge.

Everton, pushing for European qualification, host Aston Villa in Saturday's final match.

Man City on brink of title, Brighton set for survival

Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered their second defeat in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 on Friday as Punjab Kings defeated the Virat Kohli-led outfit by 34 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While it was another disappointing outing with the willow for skipper Kohli, former Australian spinner Brad Hogg has said that the Bengaluru outfit cannot expect Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers to bail them out every time.<o:p></o:p>

The troika of Kohli, Maxwell and AB de Villiers failed to perform against PBKS as Harpreet Brar, playing his first match of IPL 2021, sent the three batsmen packing back to the hut. The RCB batting collapsed miserably and fell short by 34 runs. <o:p></o:p>

"RCB going at 6 an over after 10 overs with only the loss of 1 wicket chasing 179 was not ideal. Yes you have Maxwell and de Villiers to come, but you can't expect them to pick up the pieces all the time," Hogg said on Twitter.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is, for the second consecutive season, being played behind closed doors owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the last edition was played in the UAE, the ongoing edition is being held in India, but with empty stands and stadiums. Big-hitting Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell, said he misses the feeling of playing in front of the crowd as it brings out the fire inside. <o:p></o:p>

“I miss playing in front of crowds and especially Eden, where I know thousands of people got your back. That keeps me going. And it brings out the fire inside. The loud cheer, even before I face the first ball when I start running onto the crease, those vibes are unreal,” Russell said in the KKR’s latest release called Russell: The Knight of Eden.<o:p></o:p>

The West Indies all-rounder was slapped with a doping ban in 2017 and went on to miss the IPL and all formats of the game for a year. However, the setback didn’t affect Russell’s motivation as he said the ban made him stronger while adding that the KKR management wanted him to relax and focus on cricket.<o:p></o:p>

“To be honest, that year was the toughest year. When you're doing well, sometimes people look for any reason to try and get it down. But that actually made me stronger. You know, Venky (Mysore) reached out to me, said they just want me to have a peaceful year to relax my head and to actually focus on cricket.

Many footballers face rather difficult times when they need to go under the knife to correct injuries sustained on the pitch. It is not only the physical recovery that they have to deal with, but they are also constantly mindful of the uncertainty of the recovery process, and how long it could take.

However, even in such trying times, the ‘Beautiful Game’ has its own way of bringing people together. Bangladesh National Football Team striker Nabib Newaj Jibon had come across the border to Kolkata for surgery earlier in April, only to find a guardian angel in someone who he barely knew prior to this trip to the ‘City of Joy.’

“I never really knew Pritam-da (Kotal, India National Team defender) personally, before this trip to Kolkata,” Jibon said to aiff.com.

"Yes, I had heard about him. I have played against him for my National Team. But we were never properly acquainted.”

In fact, it was one of Jibon’s teammates from the National Team, Raihan Hasan, who introduced the Bangladesh striker with the Blue Tigers defender.

“I’ve been well acquainted with Mamunul-bhai (Islam) and Raihan. In fact, it was Raihan, who took a lot of initiative and approached me about Jibon. I was told that he was coming to Kolkata, and requested me to look after him during his stay here,” said Pritam.

Pritam instantly agreed to help out his fellow footballer from across the border. “Of course, if someone comes across the border, we need to take care of him. We may be from different countries, but at the end of the day we are all from the footballing community, and we need to take care of each other,” said Pritam.

“He’s like a brother from across the border.”

Once Jibon was in Kolkata, he had set up at a hotel that was quite close to Pritam’s house, and the latter, along with his girlfriend Sonela Paul left no stone unturned to help Jibon.

“Pritam-da and Sonela-di both provided so much support when I was there in Kolkata,” Jibon mentioned. “The main thing that they provided me was the mental support. That was very important -- especially because I was in a city where I did not know anybody.”

“They used to visit me every day at the hospital, and at my hotel. I could not move around much after my surgery. But they would often come around and get different things for me – whatever I’d require. They’d even check on whether I’ve had my meals properly every day, and that meant a lot,” Jibon continued.

While Pritam could not go visit Jibon towards the end of the latter’s stay due to certain COVID-safety protocols in his locality, it was Sonela who stepped up and made sure that the Bangladesh striker was able to get back across the border, despite the fact that his flight was cancelled.

Pritam sent his driver and his car along with Sonela, to pick up Jibon and take him all the way to the India-Bangladesh border in Benapole, near the town of Bongaon.

“We also contacted the Petrapole immigration authorities and, got a permission from them. The BSF at Benapol also helped a lot. They reached in the morning, but there was a long wait till the evening, and finally he was allowed to cross the border,” said Pritam. “There were some difficulties, but the good thing is that the surgery was successful, and that he was able to get back across the border without much hassle.”

Jibon’s club Basundhara Kings are set to play against Pritam’s side ATK Mohun Bagan in the AFC Cup in May, whereas Bangladesh are set to play India in the World Cup Qualifier in Qatar, later this year. While the now recovering Jibon may be out of contention for both the matches, the two footballers who had forged a strong friendship in this short period of time, are looking forward to face each other on the pitch once again.

“Since his operation was successful, I’d very much like to see him return to the pitch soon. Even if he can’t return in time for the AFC Cup matches, it’s not that big a deal. I just hope that he gets well soon and can return to the pitch. It will be great to play against him. I pray to God for his speedy recovery,” said Pritam.

We may be from different countries, but at the end of the day we are all from the footballing community, and we need to take care of each other,” said Pritam. “He’s like a brother from across the border.” Once Jibon was in Kolkata, he had set up at a hotel that was quite close to Pritam’s house, and the latter, along with his girlfriend Sonela Paul left no stone unturned to help Jibon. “Pritam-da and Sonela-di both provided so much support when I was there in Kolkata,” Jibon mentioned. “The main thing that they provided me was the mental support. That was very important -- especially because I was in a city where I did not know anybody.” ALSO READ: Sport unites for social media boycott against online abuse “They used to visit me every day at the hospital, and at my hotel. “There were some difficulties, but the good thing is that the surgery was successful, and that he was able to get back across the border without much hassle.” Jibon’s club Basundhara Kings are set to play against Pritam’s side ATK Mohun Bagan in the AFC Cup in May, whereas Bangladesh are set to play India in the World Cup Qualifier in Qatar, later this year.

Delhi Capitals will look to keep up their momentum when they take on each of the franchises for the second time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The Delhi Capitals, who defeated&nbsp;Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets in their previous game on Thursday, have won five out of seven matches in the ongoing season.

Speaking about the team's performance in the competition so far, the JSW and GMR co-owned franchise&nbsp;opening batsman&nbsp;Shikhar Dhawan said, "We are performing very well as a team this season. We have won five out of seven matches, so we are in a pretty good position at the moment. The good thing is that the entire team is doing well, and we are not depending on any one individual. There has always been someone who has taken the responsibility to win matches for us. We have a strong side, and I am glad that we are in this position at the moment."

Dhawan had the best seat in the house when his opening partner&nbsp;Prithvi Shaw struck six fours in an over against KKR. The 35-year-old said that&nbsp;Prithvi showed a lot of courage during his innings of 82 runs from 41 balls, "It was lovely to see Prithvi strike six boundaries in one over in the last game. We got 25 runs in the first over and the game was over there itself. He made the game easy for me as I didn't have to take any risks. Prithvi was in a good flow, and he backed himself to continue scoring runs in that flow, which I think shows a lot of courage he has as a batsman. His innings of 80-odd is bigger than many centuries because the manner in which he got the runs was of a different class altogether.

The Delhi Capitals are set to take on Punjab Kings in their next match here at the&nbsp;Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, 02 May 2021. Dhawan expressed that the Delhi franchise is looking forward to registering another win in the competition, "The Punjab Kings are a good side. We cannot take any team in the IPL lightly. We have to make sure that we give our best and implement our plans properly every time we step on the field. They are playing well at the moment, and we respect that, but at the same time we are looking forward to beating them and win another match in our campaign."

Chasing 180, RCB kept losing wickets and fell off the chase early in their innings. While there were plenty of match-winners for RCB, none performed well to take the team over the winning line as they fell short by 34 runs to concede their second defeat in IPL 2021.

In Japan, a countdown is underway for the biggest and perhaps the greatest sporting event in the world, the Olympics. It is extremely rare for the Olympics to be postponed or cancelled. Since 1896, the Games have been cancelled only six times, mostly due to wars. In 2020, the quadrennial event got cancelled due to a pandemic. <o:p></o:p>

But the question remains, are we headed towards a seventh cancellation this year? Japan is witnessing a spike in infections, with just 87 days left to the Olympics. Four major prefectures are under a state of emergency. Cities that were supposed to host foreign teams are slowly pulling out. And the Japanese government seems divided on the road ahead. All of this has once again raised the possibility of the Tokyo Olympics getting cancelled or postponed.<o:p></o:p>

These comments were at odds with the united front put by the Japanese government. And they've led to consequences. More than 500 towns and cities had signed up to host Olympic teams. The Canadian Formula One Grand Prix, scheduled for June in Montreal, has been shelved due to the coronavirus pandemic and instead the race will be held in Turkey, officials said on Wednesday.

"Due to the health measures put in place to fight Covid-19, the Canadian Grand Prix has been canceled for a second consecutive year," Canadian authorities said in a statement.&nbsp;

"The event will return next year, however," and a deal has been reached between organisers and the governments of Canada and Quebec to extend its run by two years until 2031.

Formula One authorities confirmed in a short statement that because of the ongoing international travel restrictions in place in Canada, it had become impossible for anyone associated with the race to enter the country without a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

In its place this year, added Formula One, the Turkish Grand Prix will be held June 11-13.

“I want to thank the promoter and authorities in Canada for all of their efforts in recent weeks but the travel situation made our plans impossible," said Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula One, in a statement

"I equally want to thank the promoter and authorities in Turkey for their ongoing willingness to host a Formula One race."

The decision ends several weeks of uncertainty as to whether the Formula One paddock with its hundreds of staff flying in from overseas would be able to set up for the race.

Discussions had been underway between the authorities of Quebec and Canada on the possibility of organising the event behind closed doors or lifting the mandatory quarantine for visitors.

The Turkish GP, which will be held at Istanbul Park, featured in the 2020 calendar when Lewis Hamilton was crowned world champion for a record-equalling seventh time, having been a regular from 2005 to 2011.

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Warner played a watchful knock of 57 off 55 deliveries and in the process, touched a couple of landmarks. The Australian opener took 47 deliveries to touch the 40-run mark as he completed 10,000 runs in T20 cricket.<o:p></o:p>

Warner became only the fourth player to complete 10,000 runs in the shortest format of the game as he joined the likes of Chris Gayle (13839 runs) and Kieron Pollard (10694) and Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik (10488).

Full stadiums will be "very difficult" at the Tokyo Olympics, the head of the Games warned Wednesday, as organisers pushed back a decision on how many domestic fans can attend until June.

Overseas spectators have already been barred from the Games for the first time, and a ruling on Japan-based fans was expected by the end of this month.

But with parts of the country including Tokyo under a coronavirus state of emergency, organisers said they needed more time. The Games open in less than three months on July 23.

"As we look into the evolving situation with the domestic infections status involving new strains, we have agreed that a decision regarding spectator capacity at the Olympic and Paralympic venues will be made in June," Olympic officials said after top-level talks.

Tokyo 2020 chief Seiko Hashimoto said it was now unlikely that fans would fill venues as in past Olympics.

"We have to watch the situation and consider accordingly. As of now, full venues is very difficult, I understand that," she said.

"There may be a time that we have to decide on the Games behind closed doors, no spectators," she added.

But "to the extent possible, as many people as possible should be able to enjoy the Tokyo Games".

Organisers also announced new virus rules for athletes including daily antigen virus testing -- up from a previous plan for tests every four days.

Unclear or positive results will be followed up with additional tests to confirm.

"If you have a confirmed positive test for Covid-19 during the Games... you will not be allowed to compete," an updated virus rule book warns.

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'All necessary measures' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Those deemed "close contacts" of any athlete testing positive may still be able to compete, with their situation assessed on a "case-by-case basis" and depending on "the likelihood of you spreading the virus", the guide added.

Athletes are encouraged, but not required, to get vaccinated before the Games, and the restrictions will still apply to those who are inoculated.

Olympic organisers hope that bolstering virus rules for the Games will help build support in Japan, where polls show most people back either a cancellation or further delay.

Updates to the rules for other Games participants including thousands of foreign media are expected on Friday.

"We are ready with you to take all the necessary measures to minimise the risks to make the Japanese people feel safe," International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach said at the start of talks with organisers and Japanese officials.

"Our top priority is health and safety for everyone –- not only for the participants of the Olympic Games but, first and foremost, also of our gracious hosts, the Japanese people."

Those violating the rules will face a disciplinary committee and could be stripped of their right to compete.

Japan has seen a comparatively minor virus outbreak, with just over 10,000 deaths, but it is now battling what experts call a fourth wave of cases.

<h2>- 'People are anxious' -</h2>

A new state of emergency was imposed on Tokyo and three other areas on April 25, and the government's top medical adviser warned Wednesday that discussions should start soon on how the Games could be held if infections remain high by the summer.

"What's very important is the situation of the infections and how overwhelmed the medical system is," Shigeru Omi told parliament in response to a question from an opposition lawmaker.

"I think it is time to discuss the Olympics," he added, while stopping short of calling for either a postponement or cancellation.

Olympic officials insist the Games can still be held safely, with Hashimoto last week saying organisers are "not thinking about cancellation".

And Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto also ruled out a further delay to the Games on Wednesday.

"That's something we've never discussed with the IOC or others," he said, noting that the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and 2024 Paris Games leave little room for further postponement.

Hashimoto also defended the decision to keep moving ahead, telling reporters "there are so many people who are looking forward to the Games", while acknowledging "there are a lot of people who are anxious".

"That's the reality, and we need to look at both sides," she added.

Olympic chiefs took the unprecedented decision to ban overseas fans in March, in a bid to reduce virus risks.&nbsp;

Domestic ticket sales have not yet resumed after last year's postponement. Organisers said around 4.48 million tickets had been sold in Japan, and nearly a million for the Paralympics.

Tickets purchased by overseas fans are being refunded, and organisers have also said that anyone who bought tickets in Japan is eligible for a refund if crowd numbers are cut.

Olympic chiefs took the unprecedented decision to ban overseas fans in March, in a bid to reduce virus risks. Domestic ticket sales have not yet resumed after last year's postponement. Organisers said around 4.48 million tickets had been sold in Japan, and nearly a million for the Paralympics. Tickets purchased by overseas fans are being refunded, and organisers have also said that anyone who bought tickets in Japan is eligible for a refund if crowd numbers are cut. nf-amk-sah/kaf/jfx

With the COVID-19 pandemic raging in India, there have been many debates surrounding the biggest T20 cricket tournament in the world – the Indian Premier League – being held at a time when the country is recording more than 300,000 cases. While many have called for the suspension of the lucrative T20 tournament, being held behind closed doors, others have said that it brings respite to the cricket-mad country for three-four hours a day. &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

Australian cricketer Pat Cummins, who is in participating in IPL 2021 with Kolkata Knight Riders, took a step forward and donated $50,000 to help India fight the dreaded virus. The move was lauded by all, and the cricketer&nbsp;urged other IPL players to help the cause. Cummins was followed by former Australia speedster Brett Lee and KKR batsman Sheldon Jackson. <o:p></o:p>

The donation by Cummins and Lee have been backed by IPL as the cash-rich tournament has started to use its platform to raise awareness surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic while urging citizens of India to follow all the coronavirus-related precautions and get vaccinated when they are eligible to do so.<o:p></o:p>

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Executive Editor Palki Sharma Upadhyay, Australia and Kolkata Knight Riders cricketer Pat&nbsp;Cummins talked about donating $50,000 to PM Cares Fund, IPL amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and more.

When asked what prompted him to donate the generous sum to PM Cares Fund, Cummins said: “First of all, we are in the middle of IPL which is happening in India. The situation outside isn’t great. India has been so good to me over the years, the people are so kind here. I felt like doing my little bit. The situation isn’t great so anything we can do to help.”<o:p></o:p>

Cummins took to social media platforms to announce his donation to help India get immediate oxygen supplies for those struggling with the virus. The Aussie became the top trending topic on social media platforms as everyone lauded him for helping India in these testing times. <o:p></o:p>

“It has been quite overwhelming (the response on social media). Just trying to help a little bit. The response by cricketers and people outside the cricket community has been huge. As much as the money, hopefully, the awareness, helping people to stay home and keep up the morale in tough times make a bit of difference,” Cummins said.<o:p></o:p>

“A couple of guys in Kolkata Knight Riders have been really generous with their donations to the PM Cares Fund over the last year or so. There are a few people back home in Australia who are keen to help India so we might set up something in the next few days to direct a few more resources to charity here,” the ace Aussie pacer added.<o:p></o:p>

Three Australian cricketers – Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson – flew back to their homeland citing COVID-19 related concerns. Even star Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has pulled out of IPL 2021.

The question remains, should IPL 2021 continue at a time when the country’s medical infrastructure is overloaded?

Former Sri Lanka player and coach Nuwan Zoysa has been banned from all cricket for six years after an ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found him guilty of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.

The ban for Zoysa is backdated to&nbsp;October 31, 2018, when he was provisionally suspended.

As previously advised, following full hearings and presentations of written and oral argument, the Tribunal found&nbsp;Zoysa guilty of:

Article 2.1.1 – for being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspect(s) of an International Match.

Article 2.1.4 – Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1.&nbsp;

Article 2.4.4 - Failing to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct under the Code.

Zoysa has also been charged by the ICC on behalf of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) with breaching three counts of the ECB Anti-Corruption Code for Participants for the T10 League and these proceedings are ongoing.

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – Integrity Unit, said: “Nuwan played 125 matches for Sri Lanka, attending a number of anti-corruption sessions during a decade-long international career. In his role as a national coach, he should have acted as a role model. Instead, he became involved with a corrupter and attempted to corrupt others.

“Contriving to fix a game betrays the basis of sporting principles. It will not be tolerated in our sport.”

The Delhi Capitals came agonizingly close to&nbsp;Royal Challengers Bangalore's total of 171/5, but fell short by one run here at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the IPL 2021 on Tuesday. Delhi Capitals batsman Shimron Hetmyer, who played a brilliant knock of 53 not-out from 25 balls, expressed that it was a heartbreaking loss for the team.&nbsp;

"I felt we were in the game throughout the time I was in the middle. I felt very good tonight. I thought we could've gotten past whatever they threw at us. We tried our best to take the game as close as we could have, but I guess, it just wasn't our night. It was heartbreaking to be honest. I really think we could have gotten there, but that's how cricket goes. You win some and you lose some and tonight just wasn't ours to cross the line. I think we have a lot to learn from this match," said the 24-year-old.

Hetmyer, who strung an unbeaten 78-run partnership with Rishabh Pant, said that he hopes to get more chances of batting with the Skipper in the upcoming games, "It's much easier to bat with someone whose game is just the same as yours and we run well between the wickets. We had batted together during a match simulation as well. It's always nice to bat with Rishabh and I hope that we continue to get a chance to bat with each other."

Nvidia Corp., the world's most valuable chipmaker, is on the verge of completing a 10-day winning streak, marking its longest run of advances since the record-setting performance in December 2016. The Santa Clara-based company has seen a remarkable climb of approximately 20 per cent during this streak, translating to a staggering addition of about $200 billion in market value, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. &nbsp;

This surge occurs amid intense competition as rivals strive to devise alternatives to challenge Nvidia's stronghold in artificial intelligence (AI).&nbsp;

Nvidia's shares have experienced an exceptional rally, surging over 230 per cent this year, solidifying its position as the best-performing component on both the Nasdaq 100 and S&amp;P 500 indexes. The AI-driven frenzy has significantly contributed to this stellar performance, with the latest surge coinciding with a broader rebound in technology stocks. The resurgence in the tech sector is fuelled by optimistic sentiments surrounding the Federal Reserve's indications that interest rates may have reached their peak.&nbsp;

Highlighting Nvidia's commitment to innovation, the company announced the release of its updated chip, the H200, designed to incorporate high-bandwidth memory, known as HBM3e. This enhancement aims to enhance the chip's capacity to handle substantial datasets crucial for AI development and implementation. Blomberg cited Analyst Chris Caso from Wolfe Research, who notes, "NVDA has not refreshed prior datacentre GPUs in the past," emphasising that this update signifies Nvidia's acceleration in response to the growth and performance demands of the AI market.&nbsp;

Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Kunjan Sobhani underscored the significance of Nvidia's swift product-launch pace with the H200 in mid-2024. Sobhani noted that this strategy is poised to "help defend its turf," positioning the new AI processor with high-bandwidth memory as a potential market leader. &nbsp;

Despite facing challenges last month due to new US rules restricting the sale of cutting-edge chips to China, Nvidia has shown resilience and is scheduled to report earnings on November 21.&nbsp;

AB de Villiers is different class, his aura puts bowlers under pressure: Pommie Mbangwa

A new coronavirus wave hitting Sri Lanka has halted a cricket match between two of the country's top schools that has been played for 141 years, continuing even through world wars.

The annual Royal v St Thomas's encounter, originally scheduled for next month, has been indefinitely put off after four players tested positive for Covid-19, a school organiser said.

The latest edition of Sri Lanka's longest-running sporting event was to have been played over three days without spectators.

"What would have been the 142nd Royal-Thomian big-match is not likely to be held this year because of the latest Covid wave," the official told AFP.

Even the first and second world wars failed to halt the annual game, that is often compared to the English public school encounter between Eton and Harrow, played since 1805.

Duleep Mendis, who led Sri Lanka to their first Test win and another former captain, Ranjan Madugalle, are among top players to have taken part.

Sri Lanka has been hit by a virus surge since Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations on April 14.

The number of daily infections has since risen five-fold to nearly 1,000 and the government has closed all schools and banned public functions.

Sri Lanka has reported more than 100,000 cases and 647 deaths.

Chelsea hold the upper hand with an away goal heading into the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid after a tight battle in the Spanish capital ended 1-1 on Tuesday.

Christian Pulisic rewarded a bright start from the visitors with a calm finish on 14 minutes.

But Karim Benzema's brilliant strike brought the 13-time European champions to life just before the half-hour mark.

Here, AFP Sport looks at three talking points from the first leg:

<h2>Madrid show their age</h2>

Madrid's starting XI have a combined 31 Champions League winner's medals, eight of whom made up the core of the side that won the competition three seasons in a row between 2016 and 2018.

However, that experience counted for little against Chelsea's younger and fresher legs.

Pulisic, Timo Werner and Mason Mount stretched Real's back three, while N'Golo Kante and Jorginho did not allow Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric to control midfield as they did in the previous round against Liverpool.

Madrid's knowhow in knockout ties could still prove vital with the tie delicately poised heading to Stamford Bridge in eight days' time.

But Chelsea will be confident of reaching just their third ever Champions League final.

<h2>Benzema shows up wasteful Werner</h2>

After scoring just his third goal in 37 games for club and country against West Ham on Saturday, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel kept faith with Werner up front.

But the German international showed the lack of confidence in front of goal that has characterised his first season with the Blues since a £50 million ($69 million) move from RB Leipzig.

Werner passed up a glorious chance to open the scoring in a dominant Chelsea start as he fired into the legs of Thibaut Courtois from point-blank range.

Madrid, on the other hand, were kept in the tie by their number nine on another night of Champions League history for Benzema.

The Frenchman moved level with Real legend Raul on 71 Champions League goals to become the joint fourth highest scorer in the competition's history.

Benzema gave Chelsea a warning shot with a thunderous effort that came back off the post.

His goal was also barely a half-chance as he cushioned the ball on his head before blasting past the helpless Edouard Mendy to prevent Chelsea registering a 17th clean sheet in 22 games under Tuchel.

<h2>Chelsea flex strength in depth</h2>

Both clubs were among the 'dirty dozen' that signed up to form a breakaway European Super League (ESL) last week, but their reactions since have contrasted sharply.

Chelsea's intent to withdraw a week ago started a domino effect as all six English clubs involved pulled out within 48 hours of the plans being released.

Meanwhile, Madrid president Florentino Perez has defiantly insisted the project remains alive, with only Barcelona as an unlikely ally.

Central to Perez's craving for change is that Madrid are no longer the biggest spenders in the transfer market.

Faced with the state-backed Middle Eastern wealth of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who face off in the other semi-final on Wednesday, or the millions invested by Chelsea's Russian oligarch owner Roman Abramovich, Madrid are struggling to compete.

The £220 million spent by Chelsea last summer showed in the respective strength of both benches.

Tuchel was able to introduce Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Reece James with 25 minutes to go to give his side a fresh impetus.

The sale of Eden Hazard to Madrid for an initial 100m euros ($120 million) also helped fund Chelsea's rebuild.

Hazard's time in Madrid, though, has been decimated by injuries and he made barely any impact against his former club as a second-half substitute.

Champions League: Three talking points from Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said his side should have wrapped up their Champions League semi-final first leg with Real Madrid in the first half on Tuesday and rued missed chances in the 1-1 draw that could have put the game beyond their opponents.

US&nbsp;forward Christian Pulisic fired Chelsea in front in the 14th minute in the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium, and the visitors created plenty more opportunities in the first half as 13-times winners Real struggled to make any inroads at the other end.

Yet Chelsea's inability to score a second away goal proved costly as Karim Benzema's fine effort levelled things up before the break with his side's only shot on target in the opening period.

"I have a feeling we should have won the first half and we could have perhaps decided this game in the first half an hour when we were playing so strong," Tuchel told the BBC.

"The second half was a tactical game and you could feel we only had two days in between two away games which made it physically and mentally demanding and you could feel it in the decision making.

"We suffered a bit and an extra day would have been nice."

Timo Werner failed to beat Thibaut Courtois from close range early in the game and Tuchel was left frustrated by the German striker's inability to put away clear chances.

"He missed a big one at West Ham United (on Saturday) and now he's missed a big one here, that doesn't help," Tuchel told a news conference. "It doesn't help crying about it or regretting it.

"There are millions of people who have harder things to deal with than chances that you miss... I don't feel we're pointing fingers but of course the strikers want to score.

"This is the highest level and when you have a good half an hour like we did... then yes we wish for more composure and more precision in the decision making and finishing."

Tuchel continued his fine record against Zinedine Zidane's side in Europe's premier club competition - the German is the only manager to face Real as many as five times without ever losing in Champions League history.

Having scored the away goal, Chelsea are in the driving seat to reach a first Champions League final since 2012 ahead of next week's return leg at Stamford Bridge.

"It is just the first half (of the tie), we knew against Real Madrid it would be tough," Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta told BT Sport.

"We started with courage, we had to perform at our best level. The semi-final of a Champions League asks you to play your best. We missed that last pass where we could choose the best option.

"But in the overall analysis we performed well. As a unit I think we are all improving and all growing."

Champions League: Chelsea's Tuchel rues missed chances that let Real off the hook

Chelsea held their own away to Real Madrid but had to settle for a 1-1 draw in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg after Karim Benzema scored an acrobatic goal to cancel out an early strike from Christian Pulisic.

Chelsea made a bright start in heavy rain at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium and deservedly went ahead when U.S. forward Pulisic rounded Thibaut Courtois to score in the 14th minute.

Thirteen times European Cup winners Real looked ragged and short on ideas but pulled level in the 29th with a moment of true class from the talismanic Benzema, who controlled a knockdown before volleying into the roof of the net.

Chelsea looked the better side in the second half as well but could not break down Real again and then had to withstand some late pressure from the hosts, who visit Stamford Bridge in the second leg on May 5 looking to reach the final for a fifth time in eight years.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel was frustrated his side could not make the most of their early dominance.

"We started the game very well, we were aggressive, we showed courage and quality, we deserved to win the first half. Unfortunately they scored from a set-piece, there was nothing else from them for us to defend," he said.

"It was a disappointing result at halftime the second half was a very tactical game. A bit more composure and precision in front of goal and we would have won the first half but we have to live with 1-1."

This was the first ever Champions League meeting between the two sides, who were both named as founding clubs in the controversial European Super League last week before Chelsea hastily withdrew from the competition.

It was far from an idyllic setting for such an occasion, played at the tiny, empty arena located at Real's training ground and the non-stop rain made it harder for either side to create flowing passing moves.

<h2>UNSTOPPABLE STRIKE</h2>

The visitors had the first clear opening when Pulisic nodded across to Timo Werner but former Chelsea keeper Courtois thwarted the German striker with his legs.

Pulisic took no chances the next time he got into the area, controlling a long ball from Antonio Rudiger and dribbling around Courtois before calmly passing it into the net, despite the efforts of Raphael Varane and Nacho to block the shot.

Benzema carved out Madrid's first chance through his own efforts, swivelling away from a Chelsea defender on the edge of the area before aiming for the top corner and hitting the post.

The Frenchman had better fortune with his next attempt, controlling Eder Militao's header following a corner before unleashing an unstoppable strike, scoring his 28th goal of the season and his 71st in the Champions League, joining Real great Raul as the competition's joint-fourth top scorer of all time.

The second half was more cagey as the spirit Chelsea had showed early in the match dried up as they tired, although they still managed to control the game while barely allowing Real a sniff until the end.

Real defender Marcelo admitted his side had underperformed but was confident about their chances of making it to the final in Istanbul on May 29.

"We knew that could happen but there's another game to come, we're still feeling good and we know what we have to do, the return leg will be different."

"We didn't dictate the pace of the game and had to adapt but we're feeling calm."

Last-ball thriller grip IPL 2021 as RCB defeat DC

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday came back to winning ways as they narrowly defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 1 run in what was a last-ball thriller at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. RCB move atop the table after Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer fell short of taking DC over the winning line.<o:p></o:p>

Batting first, Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal enjoyed a brisk start but the Delhi Capitals bowlers were quick to correct their line and lengths as they sent both the openers packing for 30. While Glenn Maxwell and Rajat Patidar stitched a brief partnership, the Aussie was dismissed by veteran Amit Mishra for 25.

Patidar, who looked impressive with the willow, soon followed after a 31-ball 22. However, it was the majestic AB de Villiers again as he whacked an unbeaten 75 off just 42 deliveries laced by five sixes and three boundaries to help RCB post 171-5. De Villiers’ knock includes a 23-run last over where he hammered Marcus Stoinis for fun. The South African, in the process, crossed the 5,000-run mark in IPL. <o:p></o:p>

In between both the innings, Ahmedabad witnessed a dust storm which caused a brief delay.&nbsp;

Delhi capitals, chasing 172, lost the in-form opener, Shikhar Dhawan, for six as the southpaw was caught off Kyle Jamieson. Steve Smith was next to depart as Mohammed Siraj continued his good run of form while reminding everyone of his dismissal against smith in historic India's tour of Australia. Prithvi shaw played a couple of delightful strokes in his 21-run knock but edged a Harshal Patel delivery, which ideally should have been left. <o:p></o:p>

Rishabh Pant and Marcus Stoinis dealt&nbsp;with a few boundaries but the latter perished after a 17-ball 22. However, it was Shimron Hetmyer, who delivered with the bat as he scored a quickfire half-century with four sixes and two boundaries.&nbsp;

The 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will take place in St Kitts &amp; Nevis in its entirety, with all 33 games being played in the Federation. The tournament will get underway on August 28 with a similar format of games that worked successfully in 2020 and delivered a record audience of over 500 million.

Last year the tournament was successfully staged in a bio-secure bubble and the CPL operations team will again be working closely with the tournament’s medical advisors, local agencies and the St Kitts &amp; Nevis government to ensure the health and safety of all those involved in the tournament as well as the local population. Notably, St Kitts &amp; Nevis has no COVID-19 transmission and is one of the safest places to visit in the Caribbean.

Warner Park has been the scene to some of the most iconic matches in CPL history and this quick scoring ground will be an ideal venue for the tournament and fans can expect explosive cricket.

From Chris Gayle’s brilliant hundred against the Jamaica Tallawahs in 2019 to Andre Russell’s even more explosive century against the Trinbago Knight Riders in 2016, Warner Park has had some classic individual performances. There have also been some amazing matches, not least the game that went to a Super Over finish between the St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots and the Knight Riders in 2019.&nbsp;

Pete Russell, CPL’s COO, said: “We are delighted to be able to announce that we will be having the Hero CPL in St Kitts &amp; Nevis in 2021 and we would like to thank those involved in welcoming the tournament to this wonderful country. As was demonstrated during the 2020 tournament the CPL is a massive boost for the host country with US $51.5million delivered in sponsorship value for Trinidad &amp; Tobago. We are really looking forward to giving St Kitts &amp; Nevis the exposure they deserve.”&nbsp;

Jonel Powell, St Kitts &amp; Nevis Minister for Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, said: “We are greatly confident that the hosting of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in St. Kitts &amp; Nevis in 2021 will stimulate&nbsp;much-needed economic activity, especially for small and medium-sized local businesses. As it relates to COVID-19 we will maintain our vigilance to ensure that our health protocols are not compromised and that the country remains protected from any serious spread of the Coronavirus. It will most certainly help to revive the tourism sector that has been struggling for over a year, under the weight of the deadly COVID-19 global pandemic. Therefore, the economic impact is forecast to be significant.”

The Indian Men's Hockey Team&nbsp;Forward Mandeep Singh, who scored a goal in India's 3-0 victory over Argentina in their second FIH Hockey Pro League match earlier in May, expressed that the side's brilliant performance against the Olympic Gold Medallists is a huge confidence booster for the national side. The Indian team won the first FIH Hockey Pro League match against Argentina via penalty shootout (3-2) and further defeated Argentina in two out of their four practice matches on the tour, which was held from April 6 to April 14.

"Putting up a great performance against the Olympic Gold Medallists is certainly a huge confidence booster for us. We played very well against Germany and Great Britain as well and it was great to back that up with a brilliant tour of Argentina. We have attained a great rhythm in our last two tours, and we are currently working on a few aspects that we could have done better in our recent matches," said the Forward.

Mandeep added that the team's coordination on the field during their tours of Argentina and Europe was a huge plus point for the team.

"When a team plays matches after a long break, a team could lose its coordination. However, it was great to see how we all found our coordination quickly and gelled very well as a team when we played each of our matches this year. The team is shaping up really well at the moment. We just have to keep focussing on the basics and keeping moving forward with each practice session," said the 26-year-old.

The Forward further added that the Indian team's sole focus at the moment is the Olympics, and that the side is on track to create history in the quadrennial event.

"Our sole focus is the Olympics and I think we are totally on track to put up a great performance in the quadrennial event later this year. We are very fortunate to be training for the Olympics in a safe and secure environment at the SAI campus in Bengaluru during a very difficult time for our country. We are thankful for the tremendous efforts put in by Hockey India and SAI in the last one year. We couldn't have continued to practice for the Olympics without their invaluable support," signed off Mandeep.
