Covid claims two India Olympic hockey gold winners on same day

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid knew victory could fire them towards the La Liga title but Saturday's 0-0 draw at Camp Nou handed Real Madrid the chance to go top.

Four wins from their last four games will now be enough for Zinedine Zidane's side to retain their La Liga crown, with a crunch game at home to fourth-placed Sevilla up first on Sunday.

The first part of a blockbuster weekend in the Spanish title race pitched first against third but neither could take a decisive step forward, despite the best attempts of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, who faced each other for the first time since Suarez departed last summer.

A point each leaves Atletico three points clear of Real Madrid, who have a game in hand and also the superior head-to-head over both Atleti and Barcelona.

Barca remain two points off the top but their chances took the biggest hit, given they now need both Atletico and Real Madrid to slip up in the final stretch.

Anything can still happen because of what we've seen so far," said Gerard Pique. "If Madrid wins their four games they will be champions, but it is difficult for the big teams to be consistent. If we win all our three games, I think we'll have a chance."

Atletico will be disappointed too, given they spurned a number of chances in during a dominant first half, before Ronald Koeman's side recovered in the second.

Jan Oblak had to deny Messi after a vintage run forward from the Argentine, who then had a well-placed free-kick in the last minute, only for Atletico to watch the ball spin inches wide.

"We started better and they finished a little better," Oblak said. "Real Madrid has four games left but for sure they are going to be tought games. We have to keep going."

Diego Simeone said on Friday Suarez had been "vindicated" since being forced to leave Barcelona, his 19 goals making him top scorer for the team.

Koeman admitted it would be "strange" for everyone, including Messi, who sent a heartfelt open letter to his former team-mate, neighbour and best friend last year.

- Suarez 'always welcome' -

The pair shared a few words in the centre circle before kick-off after the Camp Nou stadium announcer had already beamed that Suarez "will always be welcome".

But, in truth, the Uruguayan was not at his ruthless best as a handful of openings went unconverted in a contest full of chances but that lacked precision when it mattered most.

Messi was repeatedly knocked over in the opening few minutes before Gerard Pique went through the back of Suarez, both teams scrapping for control.

Atletico slowly took charge, helped by the departure of Sergio Busquets, who was replaced by Ilaix Moriba after a clash of heads that meant he had to be taken to hospital for tests.

Without Busquets, Barcelona were rudderless for a while and the Atletico chances came thick and fast.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen had to palm away Marcos Llorente's shot and then stick out a foot to deny Suarez from the angle.

Suarez then tried to nod in the rebound after a winding run from Yannick Carrasco before claiming a penalty after feeling a flick of Ter Stegen's hand across his head.

Barcelona were rattled, the usually steady Ter Stegen booting one ball straight into the stands, only for Messi to give Atletico a reality check, his driving run past six chasers opening the space for a shot, but Oblak tipped it wide.

Felipe fired over from a well-worked Atleti short corner before half-time but Barca were better after the break, with both Ilaix and Pique going close shortly after the hour.

Both coaches made changes, hoping to inspire a winner. Ousmane Dembele was one of them and he should have grabbed it with six minutes left but headed over from six yards in perhaps the best chance of the game.

Messi could have won it at the end, standing over the ball with a free-kick placed centrally and 25 yards out. Atletico held their breath, the ball whistling just wide of Oblak's post.

Stalemate between Atletico and Barca hands advantage to Real Madrid

Thomas Mueller hailed Bayern Munich's "phenomenal" achievement after they were confirmed Bundesliga champions for the ninth season in a row on Saturday.

Robert Lewandowski grabbed a hat-trick in a 6-0 thrashing of Borussia Moenchengladbach at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Bayern were confirmed champions even before kick-off after Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 win at home to second-placed RB Leipzig earlier in the day sent the title to Munich.

"Nine titles in a row, that's crazy. And I was there each time. I'm very grateful for that," said Mueller, 31, who now holds the joint record of 10 Bundesliga titles with team-mate David Alaba.

"It shows the development of this club over the years.

"It's phenomenal, it's a huge amount of work every year with a great team."

Head coach Hansi Flick has now won seven titles in 18 months, but will leave to be replaced by RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann next season.

"That performance was worthy of champions," said Flick.

Mueller scored Bayern's second goal while Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane also got on the scoresheet alongside Lewandowski, who now has 39 league goals this season, one short of Gerd Mueller's all-time Bundesliga record.

"We wanted to show on the pitch that we are German champions," said Lewandowski, who insisted he will "keep stepping on the gas" as he chases Mueller's record with two games left.

Flick says Lewandowski is writing himself into the club's folklore.

"Gerd Mueller was my idol when I was young, but what Gerd Mueller was in my youth, Lewandowski is today," he said.

"If he manages the record, it will have been more than deserved."

Club captain Manuel Neuer admitted it was a "bizarre situation" to be crowned champions while still warming up.

"We were just getting ready, there are a few TVs in the dressing rooms," said the Germany goalkeeper.

"We realised that we had become champions and started congratulating each other."

Thomas Mueller, a one-club wonder who won his first Bundesliga title with Bayern back in 2009/10, said he never dreamed of such success when he joined the Bavarian giants as a schoolboy.

"When you play here as a little boy, you don't think you'll ever play in the first team at FC Bayern. You're just happy when you get tickets for home games," he quipped.

Mueller hails Bayern Munich's 'phenomenal' ninth league title in a row

Bayern Munich already have their eyes on a decade of Bundesliga dominance after winning the league title for the ninth successive season on Saturday, celebrating their success with a 6-0 thrashing of Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick to leave him on 39 league goals this season -- one short of Gerd Mueller's all-time Bundesliga record -- as the champions swept Gladbach aside at the Allianz Arena.

"We wanted to show on the pitch that we are German champions," said Lewandowski, who will "keep stepping on the gas" in chasing Mueller's record.

"Today was a great game, we played really well and scored a lot of goals."

The emphatic victory leaves Bayern 10 points clear of second-placed RB Leipzig, whose 3-2 loss at Borussia Dortmund sealed Bayern the title, with two games left.

The players learned they were champions again while still warming up following Dortmund's victory.

"It was a bizarre situation. We were just getting ready, when we realised that we were champions," said Bayern captain Manuel Neuer.

Board member Oliver Kahn has alread challenged Bayern to secure a 10th title in a row.

"We watched the Leipzig game together, the atmosphere was great," said Kahn. "You don't get used to it, it's an incredible achievement.

"Now we can do something next season that no team in the world has ever done: become champions 10 times in a row."

The only blot on a near-perfect night for Bayern was a red card for Tanguy Nianzou for a clumsy tackle 15 minutes from time.

Bayern wasted no time in hitting their stride, Lewandowski finding the bottom corner of the net with just under two minutes gone.

Kingsley Coman struck the post before Jamal Musiala's pass picked out Thomas Mueller to slot in his 11th league goal of the season, then Lewandowski volleyed home his second on 34 minutes.

Kingsley Coman made it 4-0 before the break, then won a penalty which Lewandowski converted in the 66th minute to leave him one goal short of Gerd Mueller's historic mark, before Leroy Sane added a late sixth.

Julian Nagelsmann, the 33-year-old coach who will leave Leipzig to replace Flick at Bayern next season, offered a terse "congratulations on a deserved title" to his future employers.

- Sancho double -

Earlier, England winger Jadon Sancho netted twice as Dortmund's win lifted them into the Champions League places, but Eintracht Frankfurt can retake fourth spot if they beat Mainz on Sunday.

Even without injured striker Erling Braut Haaland, Dortmund were 2-0 up early in the second half thanks to goals from Marco Reus and Sancho.

Leipzig fought back through a Lukas Klostermann header and Dani Olmo's equaliser, only for Sancho to grab the winner.

The two clubs meet again on Thursday in the German Cup final at Berlin's Olympic Stadium.

"We showed a lot of morale, the game had absolutely nothing to do with the final in Berlin, but of course we want to win on Thursday too," said Reus.

Dortmund hope to have Haaland back from a thigh problem before the final, and even with their top-scorer watching from the stands, the hosts still raced into the lead after less than seven minutes.

Reus span out of Lukasz Piszczek's pass, sprinted behind the defence and took a beautiful back-heeled ball from Thorgan Hazard before sweeping his shot past Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Dortmund goalkeeper Marwin Hitz did not come out for the second half after being injured colliding with his centre-back Manuel Akanji just before the break and was replaced by Roman Buerki.

Dortmund doubled their lead just six minutes after the interval with a superb piece of skill from Sancho, who cut inside after a Raphael Guerreiro pass and fired in off the far post.

The visitors pulled a goal back on 63 minutes when Emil Forsberg floated in a corner and Klostermann steered his header past Buerki.

Leipzig drew level when South Korea striker Hwang Hee-chan broke clear of Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and squared for Olmo who tapped home from close range.

However, Sancho snatched all three points when he flicked the ball to Guerreiro, took a return pass and slotted in to hand Bayern the title.

Bayern eye decade of dominance after ninth straight Bundesliga title

The LaLiga 2020-21 title race is set to reach the pinnacle with top-four sides set to play each other in the next 48 hours as the battle for the coveted trophy heats up. Gameweek 35 will see third-placed FC Barcelona lock horns with league leaders Atletico Madrid on Saturday whereas third second-placed Real Madrid host fourth-placed Sevilla on Sunday.

Since February, Atletico Madrid have conceded a 10-point lead in the LaLiga standings and a defeat to Barcelona on Saturday will see Los Colchoneros lose out the top spot to the Lionel Messi-led outfit. With a two-point advantage, a draw for Diego Simeone and Co. would help them maintain their league standings over Barcelona but could open a window for Real Madrid to move atop the standings on Sunday.

Real Madrid start the weekend while trailing by two points to Atletico Madrid but the Los Blancos have a superior head-to-head goal difference, meaning they would end up winning the LaLiga if they finish level on points with either of their rivals.

Atletico Madrid played out five draws and suffered two defeats in their last 11 LaLiga matches – and the results have dented their title aspirations massively. With one of the highest-paid managers in the world at their helm, Atletico Madrid would be desperate to close out on the league matches but face a stern challenge. But would it be called a failure if Atletico Madrid fail to lift the LaLiga?

“Fair play to play to them how they have competed with Barcelona and Real Madrid. They have been top of the league for almost the entire season despite pressure from other teams in the league. Of course, the Atletico Madrid fans might feel disappointed if they don't win it, especially when they have been on top for so long. What you have done before doesn't matter now, all that matters is points per game now. Atletico Madrid need to deliver now. The way they have competed this season is commendable but I don't think it will be deemed as a failure if they don't win the LaLiga,” former Spain international and LaLiga Ambassador, Gaizka Mendieta answered WION query during a virtual press conference.

However, former Sevilla forward Frederic Kanoute feels otherwise as he said any team or coach would have preferred to keep the 10-point league heading into the final phase of the season.

“I think Atletico Madrid will be very disappointed if they fail to win the LaLiga. As a coach, more, because the advantage they had just a couple of months ago. As a coach, when you have a lead of more than 10 points, you want to keep it as you are competing against big clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla. At one point it was looking like it won't be such a dramatic end. But as they were competing with big clubs, I was pretty sure at some point, Barcelona and Real Madrid would make their job difficult. I feel, as a coach it is important to manage your team well and Simeone has done a great job and it is difficult to keep that momentum going throughout the year,” former Sevilla forward and LaLiga Ambassador, Frederic Kanoute answered a WION query during a virtual press conference.

While Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla head into the gameweek 35 fresh, Real Madrid are coming on the back of a crushing UEFA Champions League semi-final defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday. While it would be a challenge for Zinedine Zidane to motivate the tired-legged Real Madrid players, Barcelona would be without their manager Ronald Koeman, who has been handed a touchline ban for his antics in their last game.

How big a disadvantage would it be for Barcelona to be without their manager for such a monumental game in the LaLiga title-race scenario?

“It is always important to have the manager on the touchline. It provides a certain authority in some moments of the game with guidelines and tactical awareness. I don't think it is essential at this point. The players of course know what to do on the field and how to do it, and require minimal details from the sideline. But the line of communication between Koeman and his staff going to be continued. So in that respect, although it has an impact but at this moment, it is minimal,” Gaizka Mendieta explained.

ALSO READ: Simeone will not change gameplan for Barca showdown How big a disadvantage would it be for Barcelona to be without their manager for such a monumental game in the LaLiga title-race scenario? “It is always important to have the manager on the touchline. It provides a certain authority in some moments of the game with guidelines and tactical awareness. I don't think it is essential at this point. The players of course know what to do on the field and how to do it, and require minimal details from the sideline. But the line of communication between Koeman and his staff going to be continued. So in that respect, although it has an impact but at this moment, it is minimal,” Gaizka Mendieta explained. Barcelona will lock horns with Atletico Madrid on Saturday while Real Madrid take on Sevilla on Sunday. Catch LaLiga action live and exclusive this weekend on Facebook Watch.

Trinbago Knight Riders announce 2021 retentions for CPL 2021

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has been pretty vocal about a possible return from international retirement after calling it quits in 2018. De Villiers, regarded as one of the finest batsmen to play the game, last played against Australia, in a Test match, in March-April 2018 and has since only featured in franchise cricket.

De Villiers’ super performances in franchise cricket and especially for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL has always triggered opinions that he retired too early from international cricket. In April, South Africa head coach Mark Boucher hinted towards de Villiers’ South Africa comeback in the T20 World Cup and even the swashbuckling right-handed batsmen gave a positive reaction to it.

“It will be fantastic to play for South Africa again, I will be speaking with Boucher late end of IPL – last year, he asked me whether I am interested and I said ‘absolutely’,” de Villiers had said in an IPL press conference.

Now, Cricket South Africa Director Graeme Smith has also hinted towards AB de Villiers’ comeback in international cricket along with the likes of Imran Tahir and Chris Morris.

“AB is different discussion as he is retired and whether he comes out of retirement is an ongoing discussion,” Smith was quoted as saying by Sport24.

“In terms of free agents, they are always available. They play in T20 leagues around the world and are gaining more experience in the format than most. We have seen the success the West Indies have had with that policy, so it would be considered by selectors. However, many factors go into that like team dynamics and the players in the system,” the former South African captain added.

Indian Men's Hockey Team's defender Surender Kumar, who has played 135 matches for the national side, feels fitness played a pivotal role in helping the team put up a solid show on their recent successful tours to Europe and Argentina.

"I feel fitness played a pivotal role in helping the team put up a solid performance on both the tours. I don't think we would have had a successful outing in Argentina and Europe if our fitness level were not up to the mark," said Surender.

He further added, "When your fitness level is up to the mark, you automatically perform well on the field. You know, when you are away from the competition for such a long time, it becomes difficult to maintain such fitness levels. Hence, to keep our fitness level on track, we also gave importance to our physical strength at the camp, apart from technical aspects of the game."

The World No. 5 side, who pitted against the Olympic Champions Argentina registered 2-2 (3-2 SO), 3-0 wins in their Hockey Pro League tie and secured 4-3, 4-4, 0-1 and 4-2 results in their practice matches. Speaking about the team's performance against the hosts Argentina, the 27-year-old defender said that the team focused on keeping things simple and played to their strengths without doing anything extra.

"It's not that easy to compete in a high-level competition after almost a year, especially against a strong team like Argentina, who had more international exposure than us. We focused on keeping things simple and played to our strengths, without doing anything extra, and I feel it worked out for us on the tour. And, would like to continue doing it in the Olympics as well. So, yeah, it was a good tour considering the fact that we defeated the Olympic Champions on their home soil as well as we got a great exposure before heading into the Olympics," said Surender.

The Karnal-born player, who is with the Core Group at SAI, Bengaluru further highlighted that the team is working on improving their fitness level. "We are working on improving our fitness level as it has been one of the key elements for us. As I said, if you want to put up a good show on the field, you need to have that fitness level," said the experienced defender.

With the marquee event Olympic Games just around the corner, Surender also emphasised that the team is taking one day at a time, and this approach has helped the team excel on their recent tours.

"We are taking it one day at a time, and this approach has also helped us excel on our recent tours. I think it will help us in the Olympics as well. For now, we are just focusing on our training and working hard to improve our levels each and every day," he concluded.

As the second COVID-pandemic wave rages across, one of the most common sights across all social media platforms are the multiple SOS calls from people with almost everyone frantically searching for either hospital beds, medicines or oxygen.

Indian football stars have leapt into action by offering their respective social media handles in order to amplify distress calls. India International CK Vineeth, who is no stranger to helping people in need, has come forward once again, banking on his social media presence to help the needy.

“As a human being, I believe it must be in our nature to help others who are in need. Right now, I feel it’s important to step in and do whatever I can,” Vineeth, popularly referred to as CK, opined.

“Over the years we have managed to build a community of football players, management staff, and supporters on social media, especially Twitter, that has grown exceptionally strong despite all the club rivalry. I felt I needed to join in and help -- in whatever small way possible,” the Kerala-based striker told the AIFF.

Apart from the oxygen requirements, blood banks have also appealed to citizens to donate before they get vaccinated. And the nimble-footed winger has urged everyone to come forward and assist in this drive.

“I think it’s increasingly important that those who can donate blood should do so before they get vaccinated. Amidst the second wave, there’s no doubt that there will be a shortage of blood and plasma in the blood banks in the coming months, as more and more people in younger age groups are all set to get vaccinated,” CK averred.

“The period after which a vaccinated person can donate blood is too long, and people need to understand that they can save lives by doing something as simple as visiting a blood bank,” he maintained.

The forward from Kannur had made headlines last year when he was seen working as a volunteer at a Covid-19 helpline centre back home in 2020 during the nationwide lockdown.

“I don’t consider it as ‘social work’,” CK smiled. “I consider it my duty as a citizen to give back to our community that has given me so much over the years. Throughout my career, I have realised that I don’t want people to see me as just a footballer, but also as someone who wants to make a difference and aims to affect a change in the mind-set of the community.”

He also urged his fans to come and support each other in every way possible to help them fight the deadly virus.

“What is happening on Twitter is visible. But it’s also equally important that we take care of people who may not have access to social media. Whether it is by calling up one another just to check in on them, looking out for our elderly neighbours who may need help but are scared to venture out, or taking care of animals on the streets during the lockdown -- there are so many different ways by which we can make a difference,” he expressed.

“I think it says a lot about the football community that players like Chhetri bhai (Sunil Chhetri), Darren, Sahal, Rino, Robin, Nirmal (Nirmal Chhetri) and others have come out and have led by example,” he stated.

“Sharing a message with information or a plea for resources -- it does make a massive difference. In the football community, some of us have only a few thousand followers, while others have over a million, but the truth is that every single call made or a tweet posted or shared makes a difference,” he felt.

CK also urged people to speak up as and when necessary. "If you spot someone not wearing a mask, tell them to. If you feel someone is making a wrong decision, let them know. The virus doesn’t discriminate between the rich and poor or the young from the old,” he said.

The Team India squad for the much-awaited ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, which will be played against New Zealand at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, is likely to be picked on Friday (May 7).

While not many changes are expected in the Indian Test squad, which played against New Zealand, there are talks over whether to leave Hardik Pandya out, due to him not being able to bowl full-tilt. The Chetan Sharma-led Indian selection committee is expected to pick a jumbo squad consisting of four openers, five middle-order batsmen, around nine pacers and three wicket-keepers, according to reports.

However, the exact size of the Indian squad will depend on BCCI advisory on whether to select the squad for just the WTC final or for the five-Test series against England.

The final of the World Test championship will be held from June 18 to 22 with a reserve day.

The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav are likely to retain their places. India Test squad for WTC final to be selected soon, selectors likely to mull over Hardik, Shaw

A number of English counties have offered to host the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season in the month of September. IPL 2021 was been postponed indefinitely owing to the rising cases of COVID-19 across teams.

The MCC, Surrey, Lancashire, Warwickshire – based at Lord’s – the Kia Oval (London), Edgbaston (Birmingham) and Old Trafford (Manchester) are part of the group of County clubs to have written to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) while inviting them to extend the opportunity to the BCCI, according to ESPNCricinfo.

The plan is to complete the postponed IPL 2021 in around two weeks in the second part of September.

Apart from completing the T20 tournament, the County clubs have pointed out that top players will get high-quality cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup and will ensure the pitches in the UAE are fresh. Notably, UAE is being tipped as an alternate host for IPL 2021.

Moreover, the counties are hoping that the games could be played in front of packed crowds.

However, there are a few hurdles to the plan, as stated in the report. While it is hard to predict what the pandemic will bring next, there is still some time before any final call is taken on the T20 World Cup hosting. The quarantine issue of bringing players and staff from around the world into the UK will be a major challenge. But with a number of Indian players being in the UK at the time for the Test series against England, could be helpful.

Another major challenge is the packed calendar. The Test series between India and England ends on September 14 and the latter is expected in Pakistan for a T20I series less than a month later.

However, the counties are hoping that a window could be managed with some flexibility.

US drugmaker Pfizer and German company BioNTech on Monday announced the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to donate doses of their COVID-19 vaccine in a bid to inoculate athletes and delegations bound for the Tokyo Olympics.

Pfizer and BioNTech are set to supply vaccines as early as the end of May and the move will allow athletes and delegations to complete the vaccinations process by the opening of the Tokyo Olympics in late July.

The International Olympic Committee is likely to discuss the matter with national Olympic committees across the world and provide vaccines as needed. Notably, the states decided whether to offer immunisation to athletes and delegations in accordance with local guidance before they can fly to Japan for the quadrennial event.

However, the IOC and the International Paralympics Committee have said that vaccination is not compulsory for athletes and the process should be conducted in full respect of national vaccination priorities.

"This donation of the vaccine is another tool in our toolbox of measures to help make the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 safe and secure for all participants, and to show solidarity with our gracious Japanese hosts," IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement. "We are inviting the athletes and participating delegations of the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games to lead by example and accept the vaccine, where and when possible."

More than 430 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine have been shipped to 91 countries and territories. The two companies are expected to produce 2.5 billion doses in 2021 and 3 billion doses in 2022. The donation to Olympic athletes will not affect the global vaccine supply, the companies said.

Chelsea beat Real Madrid 2-0 to clinch a 3-1 aggregate success in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg.

Goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount booked an all-Premier League showdown with Manchester City in the final in Istanbul on May 29.

AFP Sport looks at three things we learned from the Stamford Bridge clash:

Tuchel's Midas touch

Since replacing the sacked Frank Lampard in January, Thomas Tuchel has overseen a remarkable revival in Chelsea's fortunes and this was his finest moment yet.

Tuchel arrived at Stamford Bridge with a solid CV after leading Paris Saint-Germain to the French title and last season's Champions League final.

But few expected him to have such an immediate impact on under-performing Chelsea.

Mired in ninth place in the Premier League when Tuchel took charge, Chelsea have won 16 of their 24 games under the German, rising back into the top four and reaching the finals of the Champions League and FA Cup.

Defensive excellence has been the trademark of Tuchel's reign and once again he organised Chelsea superbly as they kept Real at bay and posed a sustained threat on the counter.

Thanks to Tuchel's tactical excellence, Chelsea are in their third Champions League final and their first since winning the competition for the first time against Bayern Munich in 2012.

Tuchel has already masterminded a victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final and a repeat in Turkey would cap an incredible debut season.

Redemption for Werner

After a turbulent first season at Chelsea, Timo Werner finally exorcised his demons with the goal that put Chelsea on course for the final.

An ever increasing litany of high-profile misses had raised serious doubts about the decision to sign Werner from RB Leipzig for £45 million ($62 million) last year.

Werner even received social media criticism from the wife of his Chelsea team-mate Thiago Silva after his close-range effort was saved by Real keeper Thibaut Courtois in the first leg.

It looked like being another frustrating night for Werner when the German striker allowed himself to be needlessly caught offside before slotting home Ben Chilwell's low cross.

But, for all his travails this season, Werner has refused to hide and his honest endeavour was rewarded in the 28th minute.

N'Golo Kante slipped a pass to Kai Havertz and when his chip rebounded off the bar, Werner was perfectly placed to grab the easiest goal of his career, heading into the empty net from virtually on the line.

The 25-year-old's 12th goal for Chelsea was only his second in his last 18 games.

It was also Werner's first Champions League goal in open play since September 2019, but the wait was worthwhile as he became the toast of the King's Road at last.

Hazard flops

Eden Hazard helped Chelsea win the Premier League twice in his seven-year spell with the club, but the Real Madrid forward's first return to Stamford Bridge was one to forget.

Making just his 18th appearance of another injury-ravaged campaign, Hazard looked a shadow of the player who dazzled in Chelsea blue.

When the 30-year-old left the Bridge in 2019, he was ranked among the world's best players after scoring 110 goals in 352 games for Chelsea.

Real had to pay £89 million to land the Belgian star, who was expected to succeed Cristiano Ronaldo as the new king of the Bernabeu.

Instead, Hazard turned up overweight for his first pre-season with the club and has been on a steep decline ever seen.

Given a chance to change the narrative against his former club, Hazard was completely anonymous.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane stuck with Hazard for 89 minutes, but he produced just one shot on goal when his low drive was blocked by Edouard Mendy as Madrid bowed out with a whimper.

Champions League: Three things we learned from Chelsea vs Real Madrid

The Formula One circus pitches up in Barcelona this weekend for the Spanish Grand Prix with Red Bull's tantalising tilt at prising the spotlight away from showstoppers Mercedes topping the bill.

Three races in and against pre-season predictions it is Lewis Hamilton who leads Max Verstappen by eight points arriving at the fourth leg of the championship.

Wins last Sunday in Portugal and in the opener in Bahrain leave the seven-time champion in his customary habitat at the top of the F1 drivers' tree.

Barcelona is a track the teams know intimately as the usual venue for pre-season testing, and with its reputation as a circuit where overtaking opportunities are few and far between the onus will be on Saturday's qualifying to command a prime front row seat on Sunday's grid.

Hamilton is seeking his fifth consecutive win in Catalonia, with three of his last four victories delivered from pole.

Should he top the time sheets on Saturday he will celebrate his 100th pole position, after being denied that honour by his teammate Valtteri Bottas last weekend in Portimao.

Verstappen and Red Bull's emergence as serious title contenders not only has F1 fans gripping their sofas' arm rests or smart phones -- Mercedes chief Toto Wolff says he's enjoying the same sensation he felt at the first signs Mercedes could muscle in on the then Red Bull roadshow seven years ago.

"When we were behind in testing and in Bahrain, it's a buzz that I have not felt in the team since 2013 when we had that first sniff that we could be there," said Wolff. "The whole place is excited and continues to be excited. I'd like to be happy after Abu Dhabi at the end of the season but for the time being, we'll take it one step at a time."

While the 2021 Hamilton continues to display all the hallmarks that have turned him into a serial champion - often flawless race craft, consummate professionalism and steely focus, Verstappen this season has changed.

The Dutch driver seems to have his eye on the bigger picture, as F1's managing director Ross Brawn pointed out.

"It's clear that Max Verstappen is approaching this championship in a different way because he finally has a title-winning car," said Brawn.

"And it had to change because when you're a title contender, the focus has to be on consolidating when you're not the fastest and when opportunities such as a mechanical issue for a rival or a Safety Car present themselves, you must be in a position to strike."

Verstappen's boss at Red Bull Christian Horner is like his Mercedes counterpart Wolff lapping up the first proper inter-team title battle for some time.

"The picture is starting to clarify. Red Bull and Mercedes are the two standout teams, and Lewis and Max are the two standout drivers.

"It's incredibly tight. The biggest winner for that is Formula 1 – and if it goes like this for 23 races, it's going to be nip and tuck."

One driver who has special reason to approach this weekend's race with a spring in his step is Fernando Alonso.

The two-time champion is finally finding his feet with Alpine, formerly Renault, after his return to F1, scoring points for the second straight race in the Algarve sunshine.

"It was good, it was fun," said the veteran Spaniard ahead of his home grand prix.

"We were fighting with one McLaren, one Ferrari - things that were unthinkable in Imola or Bahrain. So I think we made a big step forward in terms of the car performance."

Alonso is in 12th in the drivers standings, nine places and 32 points behind Lando Norris, who has enjoyed a sensational start to 2021 for back-in-business McLaren with three top-five finishes.

Sensational is not how even Nikita Mazepin's most loyal followers would describe the Russian rookie's three first appearances in the fast lane.

A lap one crash in Bahrain, spins at Imola, and a dangerous block on Sergio Perez last Sunday suggest the young Haas driver will be just happy to reach Sunday night having crossed the line without any further mishaps.

Hamilton pursues 100th pole as 'nip and tuck' title battle arrives in Spain

Timo Werner admitted he was relieved to redeem himself with a goal against Real Madrid which helped put Chelsea into the Champions League final against Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Having missed a sitter when the semi-final first leg finished in a 1-1 draw in Madrid, Werner made amends in the return on Wednesday with the opening goal in a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge which put the Blues into the final with a 3-1 win on aggregate.

"We were the dominant team for two games. That's why I'm glad I was able to make up for my mistake like this," Werner told Sky.

"A childhood dream for everyone in the dressing room has come true."

After a season blighted by a litany of high-profile misses, Werner was widely criticised after the first leg when his close-range effort was saved in Madrid.

"In the first leg I was the fool because I didn't get the ball in from five metres," the Germany striker added.

"I put this one away from five metres, even though it was a bit easier as there was no goalkeeper.

Chelsea booked their place in the Istanbul final on May 29 when Mason Mount tapped in their second goal five minutes from the final whistle.

Timo Werner admitted he was relieved to redeem himself with a goal against Real Madrid which helped put Chelsea into the Champions League final against Premier League rivals Manchester City.

"A childhood dream for everyone in the dressing room has come true." After a season blighted by a litany of high-profile misses, Werner was widely criticised after the first leg when his close-range effort was saved in Madrid. "In the first leg I was the fool because I didn't get the ball in from five metres," the Germany striker added. "I put this one away from five metres, even though it was a bit easier as there was no goalkeeper. "It would have been bad if I hadn't finished that one either." FIFA president Gianni Infantino says he is not in favour of sanctions against the 12 clubs that tried to launch a European Super League, preferring "dialogue" on football reform.

The plan to create a closed competition was "unacceptable" and "unimaginable", the world football boss told French sports daily L'Equipe in an interview published on Wednesday.

"Certain actions should have consequences, and everyone must assume their responsibilities," said Infantino, who has publically joined the opposition to the project.

"But you always have to be careful when you talk about sanctions.

"It's said quickly that you have to punish. It's even popular -- or populist -- sometimes.

"By punishing a club, for example, you are also punishing players, coaches and fans, who have nothing to do with it."

He said that while sanctions should come "first and foremost" from national football bodies, followed by UEFA and finally FIFA, he said "I always prefer dialogue to conflict, even in the most delicate situations".

He urged "listening to everyone" to understand "how we have come to this point".

Infantino said there were many possible avenues to promote "economic stability" and "competitive balance" in football.

He said FIFA were working to reform of the transfer market and planned to reintroduce licenses for agents and wants to cap their commissions.

He also suggested "the introduction of salary ceilings, ceilings on transfer fees", "a limit on the number of players per club, as well as the obligation to have a certain number of locally-trained players" and "minimum rest periods" between games.

Many of these proposals would face tricky legal hurdles or political opposition from inside the game.

With the rescheduled Euro 2020 and Copa America scheduled for immediately after the current season, Infantino also urged reform of the international calendar, calling for "fewer matches, but better quality".

Without offering any details, Infantino promised "interesting discussions" on the recent proposals by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Chief of Global Football Development, who has advocated increasing the number of internationals by holding the World Cup and the Euros every two years.

Infantino also reaffirmed his intention to expand the Club World Cup to 24 teams, without offering a precise deadline, promising that this project, which is being contested by the continental confederations, would become "the best club event in the world".

Mikel Arteta believes his Arsenal side can take their "biggest step forward" under his management if they end a turbulent season by booking their place in the Europa League final.

The Gunners welcome former manager Unai Emery back to the Emirates Stadium on Thursday for the second leg of their semi-final with Villarreal.

The Spanish side hold a slender 2-1 advantage from the first leg at El Madrigal, where Nicolas Pepe's penalty gave Arsenal what could prove to be a crucial away goal.

If Arsenal win they will almost certainly face Manchester United, who are on the brink of reaching the final in Gdansk after beating Roma 6-2 in the first leg of their tie.

Arsenal have not played Champions League football since 2017 but winning the Europa League would take the club back into the elite competition next season.

Arteta's team won the FA Cup in August at the end of his first season in charge but they have failed to build on that success and are 12 points off the Premier League's top four with just four games remaining.

There is also disquiet among supporters of Arsenal, who were one of six Premier League clubs to sign up to the ill-fated European Super League.

"It's a big moment," Arteta said of the second leg. "Again, not for me but for the club for everything that has happened in the last two years, in the last months.

"All the instability that we've been here with for many different reasons. So, I think it will be really important and our biggest step forward if we are able to be in that final and have the opportunity to win that trophy."

Thousands of Gunners fans vented their anger at US owner Stan Kroenke before the recent defeat to Everton at the Emirates.

With Swedish billionaire Daniel Ek publicly talking about a potential takeover bid, another protest has been mooted ahead of Thursday's match.

Arteta said he had no problems with supporters making their opinions heard but did not want to see a repeat of the disruption by fans that led to the postponement of Manchester United's match against Liverpool at the weekend.

"I think that they have to be able to express themselves and if it's done in a specific way, then they have the right to do it," he said.

"We have to prepare for the game in the best possible way. I wouldn't like to use any excuses. If something happens with that, then I know that the only purpose of the fans is to defend the club and that they want the best for the team. We will try to do the same."

Arteta urges Arsenal to take 'biggest step forward' and reach Europa final

Nirmal Chhetri was once hailed by Gerd Muller as “brilliant,” during Bayern Munich U23s visit to Kolkata in 2009 wherein he had made quite an impression in his duels against a promising but young Thomas Mueller. And then in 2012, Thomas, who represented Bayern Munich in Bhaichung Bhutia’s farewell match in Delhi, had mentioned repeatedly about Nirmal, saying “he was difficult to get past.”

As someone who has always been known to take up steep challenges, Nirmal, the former national team defender preferred to lead from the front as India battles the ongoing second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only the other day, Nirmal organized a blood donation drive in his hometown of Melli in Sikkim, which he feels was the need of the hour as “people from across the nation have joined hands to help one another,” all in an effort to take the society forward together.

"Social work and giving back to my community as much as possible is something very close to my heart. With the number of cases rising across the country we received a call from the local blood bank about a shortage as the vaccination drive was all set to begin,” Nirmal informed AIFF.

“Hence, all of us at my local club FC Melli worked non-stop and were able to organize a camp in just two days at the local football ground," he added. "We had a lot of challenges with regards to the security and health protocols but the whole team worked in great coordination to ensure they were followed and make the drive a success."

"We were inspired by a local organization named Blood Army of Sikkim and with their guidance, we were able to collect 58 units in all for the blood bank at the Namchi District Hospital in South Sikkim."

Last year, in August 2020, the 30-year-old led had taken up an initiative in the fight against COVID-19 as he had organized a sanitisation drive in Melli, covering key areas of the town along with 500-600 homes. In the past, he has been highly active in his local community -- leading afforestation, cleanliness and anti-drug awareness drives as well.

"Whenever I get a break from football, I am always thinking about how I can help my local community and contribute as much as I can. The support I have received over my career from the people back home has always been crucial and now, it's my time to give back to society and help my fellow citizens," Nirmal, who was part of the triumphant 2012 Nehru Cup squad expressed.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was indefinitely postponed on Tuesday due to the multiple COVID-19 cases across teams. While fans and pundits have questions the BCCI for keeping multiple venues for the T20 tournament at a time when India is fighting the second wave of the coronavirus, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has said that they would have held the IPL 2021 overseas had they knew this situation was going to arise.

Dhumal said that the series between India and England boosted the confidence that IPL 2021 could be held in multiple venues in India and the board wanted to boost the spirit of the country through the IPL.

The BCCI treasurer further said that no one imagined such a situation would arise and everyone was quite confident of pulling off the tournament.

“In a normal scenario, we would have had more venues, like Indore and Pune. They also used to host IPL games. When we were conducting the England series, everything went so smoothly that we thought that it’s time to take cricket back to each zone. At least, the main centres of India,” Dhumal told the Indian Express.

“The IPL should have been played in all areas. We all thought that after what the country went through in 2020, the IPL will boost the spirit of the country. We conducted a dummy run and planned out things. When the England series was conducted in Ahmedabad, Chennai and Pune, the situation was far better. Had we known, we could have held the IPL overseas. It was during the time when things were getting normal that we took the call. We were quite confident that we will pull it off,” he added.

Since the postponement, the biggest question being asked to the BCCI is what was the need of conducting the IPL in multiple venues? Could it have been played in a single venue?

“We stand by our word that for us, the IPL is not complete until our players and officials reach their homes safe and secure. We are working on that and will come out with a detailed plan in two days,” Dhumal quipped.

When asked when the fans can expect the IPL 2021 to resume, Dhumal said they haven’t discussed anything about a potential window in future and want to focus on players’ return.

“We haven’t discussed anything as all our focus is now on ensuring players, support staff and officials reach home safely. When a window is available, we will hold it,” Dhumal said.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has emphasized the need for supporters to be listened to but added that the protest “went too far” and had to be conducted in a “civilised” manner.

Following the European Super League episode, fans displayed their anger at the owners with thousands of protestors barraging inside Old Trafford while demanding change before the high-profile match against arch-rivals Liverpool. Greater Manchester Police has since said that six of its officers were injured during the protest, which ended up postponing the much-awaited match.

When approached by Sky News, Manchester United Avram Glazer refused to apologise to the fans over attempts to join the breakaway European Super League. Speaking ahead of Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg against Roma, Solskjaer said: "It was a difficult day for us. The biggest question after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was postponed indefinitely on Tuesday was how would the overseas players fly back home? With India going through a deadly second wave of COVID-19, some countries, including Australia, have banned travelers from flying back to their nation from India. However, eight out of 11 England players flew back last night and landed in London on Wednesday morning.

Only three England players – Chris Jordan, Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan – are still in India and expected to leave India within the next 48 hours.

ICC Player of the Month nominations for April announced; Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman to battle it out

Spectators were urged to stay away as a subdued Tokyo Olympics marathon rehearsal took place under strict anti-coronavirus conditions in Sapporo on Wednesday, as officials grapple with a rise in infections and public antipathy to the Games.

Scattered onlookers in facemasks clapped but refrained from cheering, to avoid spreading droplets, as Kenya's Hillary Kipkoech won the scaled-back men's half-marathon in 1hr 46sec and Japan's Mao Ichiyama was the women's winner in 1hr 8min 28sec.

Security guards stood with signs around their necks asking people to "please refrain from watching the race" to prevent infections as the event unfolded in a muted atmosphere in the northern city.

The marathon was at the centre of controversy in the original build-up to the 2020 Games, when it was moved to Sapporo from Tokyo to avoid the capital's punishing summer heat.

Wednesday's test attracted disquiet for different reasons, as residents voiced concerns about its potential for spreading the virus.

"We are doing what we can to contain the coronavirus," Shuji Miura, who manages a cafe along the route, told the Asahi Shimbun.

"But it will be completely useless if they hold the rehearsal event before we see any result."

Polls show the majority of people in Japan want a cancellation or further postponement of the 2020 Games, which are due to open on July 23.

Tokyo, Osaka and other regions are currently under a coronavirus state of emergency to bring down surging cases, while the country's vaccine roll-out has been progressing slowly.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said he could understand the "nervousness" in Japan about holding the Olympics during the pandemic.

"We take that nervousness very, very seriously," Coe told reporters.

"We have Covid protocols that have been tried and tested, and I've witnessed them here this morning. We take very seriously the health and wellbeing of local communities."

Coe, who was head of the 2012 London Olympics, said it was "really important that when the world looks to coming out of Covid, coming out of the pandemic, that it can see optimism".

"The Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games will be totemic of that optimism and hope going forward. So it is important that the Games are delivered successfully, and they're delivered safely," he added.

- Daily tests -

Around 2,700 people including organisers were involved in Wednesday's event in Sapporo, said top Tokyo 2020 official Yasuo Mori. Sixty-nine runners took part in the half-marathon.

Overseas competitors had to take Covid-19 tests before their departure and on arrival in Japan, and were also tested daily before the event, as will happen at the Olympics.

Mori said no one had tested positive for Covid-19, with the athletes made to stay in hotels with no contact with the public.

Coe said he was sure people in Sapporo, which hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, would eventually be glad of welcoming the marathon.

"I'm also very sure that the people of Sapporo will be proud historically to be able to claim that they live in a city that has been the host to the Winter Games and also the host to an event in the Summer Games," he said.

The pandemic has severely disrupted test events for the Olympics, with several postponed, cancelled or moved abroad.

This week's Diving World Cup, which doubles as an Olympic qualifier, is taking place behind closed doors in Tokyo.

Olympics organisers are yet to decide how many fans -- if any -- will be allowed at the Games, with overseas spectators already barred from attending.

So it is important that the Games are delivered successfully, and they're delivered safely," he added. - Daily tests - Around 2,700 people including organisers were involved in Wednesday's event in Sapporo, said top Tokyo 2020 official Yasuo Mori.

'Don't watch' - fans warned off Tokyo Olympics marathon test

Manchester City reached their first Champions League final as Riyad Mahrez's double sealed a 2-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday's semi-final second leg.

City, 4-1 winners on aggregate, will play Chelsea or Real Madrid in the final in Istanbul.

Here, AFP Sport looks at three things we learned from the Etihad Stadium clash:

Guardiola makes his point

Criticised for meddling with Manchester City's tactics with disastrous results in last season's shock Champions League quarter-final defeat against Lyon, Pep Guardiola enjoyed a moment of sweet redemption as his astute game-plan laid the foundations for their historic victory.

With a 2-1 lead to defend from the first leg in Paris, Guardiola needed to come up with the right approach to ensure his team didn't let PSG back into the tie.

Some believed Guardiola's desire to prove he could win the Champions League without Lionel Messi had affected him in the latter stages of the competition in the past as he tinkered with team line-ups unnecessarily.

But this time he struck just the right note, with a counter-attacking approach that set City up to take advantage of PSG's need to chase the game.

It worked to perfection with Riyad Mahrez's opening goal coming after a long pass from Ederson exploited the gaps left by PSG at the back.

"We approach this game like any other game," Guardiola had said ahead of the second leg, but even he knew the 289th match of his City reign was unlike any that had come before.

Guardiola last won the Champions League when he lifted the trophy for the second time in his Barcelona reign in 2011.

He hadn't been to the final since then, with City's Champions League campaigns littered with agonising exits in the Guardiola era.

At last, Guardiola and City can put their chequered European history behind them as they chase a remarkable Premier League, Champions League and League Cup treble.

Rock-solid Dias leads the way

Ruben Dias has made a superb impact since arriving at Manchester City from Benfica last year and this was the Portugal centre-back's finest moment yet.

After initially failing to fill the void left by Vincent Kompany's exit in 2019, City have finally found a worthy successor for the inspirational Belgian.

Dias was rock solid as PSG fought to get back into the tie, making a series of brave blocks and well-timed interceptions.

Twice, he denied PSG by putting his body on the line without a second thought, but the 23-year-old's tour de force came in the 62nd minute.

Ander Herrera's volley was flying towards goal, but Dias flung himself in the way, taking the ball flush on the face to stop the shot testing City keeper Ederson.

Dias wasn't the only defensive hero for City and when Oleksandr Zinchenko made a last-ditch block to deny Neymar inside the City area, John Stones hugged the left-back with unbridled joy -- a celebration that set the stage for the party to come at the final whistle.

PSG blunted by Mbappe injury

The glum look on Kylian Mbappe's face as he sat huddled on the PSG bench encapsulated a miserable evening for the France star and his team.

Mbappe wasn't fit to start after suffering a calf injury and he remained an unused substitute as PSG's final hopes faded away.

Brazil star Neymar had shouldered the burden when Mbappe was absent in the past, with PSG winning all five of their previous games under Mauricio Pochettino without the 22-year-old.

But Neymar was hounded into submission by City's tenacious defence and Mauro Icardi, starting in Mbappe's place, was unable to replicate the threat posed by the World Cup-winning striker, who has 37 goals in 43 appearances this season.

PSG had scored three at Manchester United, four at Barcelona and three at Bayern Munich in the Champions League this season.

But five of those 10 goals came from Mbappe and his absence made it impossible for PSG to overturn the first-leg deficit.

Champions League: Three things we learned from Man City vs Paris Saint-Germain

Spain's La Liga is investigating whether a party organised by Barcelona players at their captain Lionel Messi's home broke Covid-19 protocol.

"We're looking into it," La Liga sources told AFP on Tuesday.

Monday's meal brought together Barca players, some accompanied by their partners, at the Argentinian star's house, despite social distancing rules in the Catalonian capital outlawing groups of more than six to meet in private.

The party may constitute "a possible breach of Covid-19 protocols", the source suggested.

The purpose of the get-together according to local media was to give the team a morale boost ahead of the season run-in, with Messi's double in Sunday's 3-2 win over Valencia leaving them two points adrift of Atletico Madrid with four games to play, and to celebrate last month's Copa del Rey triumph.

Images carried in various media showed players like Sergi Roberto and the teenager Pedri leaving Messi's house. In a video chants of 'champions, champions' could be heard.

"The public health agency will study this case and decide whether to take it any further," Pere Aragones, vice-president of the regional Catalan government, said on Tuesday.

He added: "We call on everyone to respect the (social distancing) measures and urge those in the public gaze to be extra attentive as they can lead by way of example."

La Liga launches virus probe after Messi's Barca party

UEFA said Tuesday it would allow expanded 26-man squads at Euro 2020, meeting a demand from coaches who feared they could lose players due to coronavirus.

European football's governing body said it had agreed the increase from 23 players "to mitigate the risks of teams facing a shortage of available players for certain matches due to possible positive Covid-19 test results and subsequent quarantine measures".

France coach Didier Deschamps and Belgium boss Roberto Martinez were among those who had called for the change while England manager Gareth Southgate had been opposed.

Matchday squads will still be limited to 23 players.

UEFA clarified that the current regulations that allow coaches to change their squads after the cut-off point of June 1 up until their first match in the case of "serious injury or illness" will include players who test positive for Covid-19 or who are declared as "close contacts" of a positive Covid-19 tested person.

The new regulations will also allow goalkeepers to be replaced before each match during the tournament in case of physical incapacity even if one or two goalkeepers from the player list are still available.

A player that has been replaced on the player list will not later be allowed to return to the competition.

UEFA had already decided that teams would be allowed to make up to five substitutions in games at the delayed Euro 2020 instead of the usual three, in line with current rules across many club competitions.

National teams have named squads of 23 players at the World Cup and European Championship ever since the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Euro 2020 was postponed last year because of the pandemic but is due to take place at venues across the continent, from June 11 to July 11.

It was set to be held in 12 hosts cities in 12 countries but Dublin and Bilbao were forced to drop out as they could not guarantee the presence of fans at the Aviva Stadium in the Irish capital and the San Mames.

The four matches due to be held in the Basque Country -- three from Group E and a last 16 game -- were kept in Spain by moving them to Seville's La Cartuja stadium.

The three Group E matches originally scheduled to be held in Dublin were shifted to Saint Petersburg, which had already been assigned three Group B matches and a quarter-final, while London's Wembley Stadium took the last 16 match.
