He actively promotes business and cultural exchanges between India and Sri Lanka and has been instrumental in inviting many Indian artists to perform in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

Our first roads and railways were laid by the IOTs. There were coffee plantations originally and then it got wiped out owing to a disease affecting the plant. Then the tea plantation workers began planting tea bushes", Nadesan highlights the contributions of the community that he and his organization have been striving for.

Providing better living conditions, education, housing, healthcare, and nutrition and creating awareness about the same among the Indian Tamils in Sri Lanka, are his key focus areas. He also looks forward to working with the Indian Government to provide housing for the Indian Tamil population in the island nation. He also hopes to negotiate with the Indian Government to set up classrooms, science labs, a nursing school and a university, in addition to the hospital that India has already provided. Among his projects is also to create&nbsp;of a museum to chronicle the history of the Indian Tamil community and their culture and traditions.&nbsp;

The 17th&nbsp;edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Indian Diaspora Day) Convention is to be held between 8-10th&nbsp;January at Indore, Madhya Pradesh and the awards will be conferred by the Indian president. A total of 27 awardees from across categories will be receiving the awards, as per the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.&nbsp;

Dhaka's National Museum has preserved the historic makeshift stage consisting of a table and two chairs used by Pakistan's last military commander AAK Niazi to sign the&nbsp;surrender document on December 16, 1971, and has kept it for display as a liberation war relic, PTI reported.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Being the first-ever surrendering ceremony done in public, it was unknown how the stage was set until 2012 when an Indian war veteran named Brigarider General Sant Singh revealed to Bangladesh's officials Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) news agency that he was the man who arranged the historic ceremony.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The BSS report said, "The makeshift stage, for the event regarded as the world's first-ever such surrender ceremony in public, was held on a makeshift stage mainly consisting of a table and two chairs, which are now kept at the National Museum for display as a major 1971 war relic."

Singh, 94, recalling the event said that as the Pakistani commander agreed to surrender, India's Major General JFR Jacob&nbsp;asked him to arrange the event.&nbsp;

He said, "I thought a table and two chairs will be needed for signing the 'instrument of surrender' and so I looked around for a suitable table and the chairs at General Niazi's office."

He added that he was in a rush and did not get the time to select an appropriate corner at the Racecourse.&nbsp;

Years later, Major General Shafiullah, who led the force during the war was asked to set the stage at Racecourse, he realised that the task has already been done.

Further investigations were done, and Singh was awarded the second MVC after he captured Mymensingh and Madhpur in Bangladesh while he was leading the battle.&nbsp;

The Bangladesh Liberation war, fought with the help of India broke after a sudden crackdown at midnight on March 25 by the Pakistani troops and ended on December 16.&nbsp;

The same year marked Pakistan's defeat in Dhaka. According to statistics, three million people died during the nine-month conflict.&nbsp;

Stage used for signing Pak surrender in 1971 Bangladesh liberation war on display in Dhaka museum

The Taliban on Thursday banned the FM radio broadcasts streaming from Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) Afghanistan stations, saying that they are stopped due to non-compliance with journalistic principles and one-sided broadcasts. Taking to Twitter, Abdul Haq Hammad, who oversees broadcasting for the Ministry of Information and Culture of the incumbent Afghan administration, said, "Radio Azadi (RL), which started broadcasting after the American occupation, was stopped due to non-compliance with journalistic principles and one-sided broadcasts," Khaama Press reported.

According to a tweet from Hammad, the Radio Azadi broadcasts have been banned in 13 Afghan provinces.

Meanwhile, VOA also reported that a new directive from the Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture has placed a ban on VOA's broadcasts, effective from December 1.

The Voice of America television program, known as Ashna TV, which had previously been broadcast on the Tolo TV, TOLONews, and Lamar TV channels, was suspended on March 27 this year by the authorities in Afghanistan.

According to the VOA, the ban came a day after the Taliban's ministry of information and culture said it had received complaints about programming content but shared no specifics.

It is unclear whether the ban will apply to other international broadcasters that have used the same system for FM broadcasts in Afghanistan."Afghanistan has press laws, and any network found repeatedly contravening these laws will have their privilege of reporting from and broadcasting within Afghanistan taken away," Abdul Qahar Balkhi, who looks the incumbent Afghan administration`s foreign department, said in written comments to VOA. "VOA and Azadi Radio failed to adhere to these laws, were found as repeat offenders, failed to show professionalism and were therefore shut down," VOA quoted Balkhi as saying.

Voice of America began airing radio programs in Dari and Pashto in Afghanistan in October 1980 and July 1982, respectively. Radio Azadi officially started broadcasting in Afghanistan in 2002.

There were 547 media outlets in Afghanistan during the previous administration, according to Reporters Without Borders, but 219 print, aural, and visual media were shut down after the current administration assumed power, according to Khaama Press.

Since taking over last year, the government has placed a number of limitations on the media and journalists in Afghanistan, including mandating female presenters t cover their faces while on air.

Free press organizations have slammed them with pervasive media censorship and muzzling, harassing reporters, and depriving female media workers of the right to employment, Khaama Press reported.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has come out in defence of the outgoing Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa. The agency said that the allegations surrounding the army chief and his family members making the rounds on social media were "misleading".

A recent report by Pakistani investigative news website FactFocus claimed that Gen Bajwa and his family amassed assets worth 5.66 billion US dollars (12.7 billion Pakistani rupees) over the past six years of his term. This includes assets and businesses&nbsp;both within and outside Pakistan.

However, the military's media wing ISPR&nbsp;said in its statement that the data presented in the report was exaggerated and based on assumptions, reported Dawn.&nbsp;

Calling the allegations "blatant lies and malice" the agency said that the report is totally untrue and that Gen Bajwa and his family regularly file their tax returns.&nbsp;"Like every citizen, the army chief and his family are answerable to the tax authorities for their assets."

Pakistan military's media wing calls reports of General Bajwa's wealth 'blatant lies and malice'

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in an address on Monday alleged that a propaganda cell in the country was "feeding journalists" against him.

He claims that the propaganda cell purposefully misconstrues his words and that "They [the journalists] are told to pick and choose things from my interview and then turn those against me".

As per Dawn, he further stressed that he wanted his country to be on friendly terms with all countries but would not allow slavery.

He said that he always wanted an independent foreign policy for Pakistan adding that the current one is not protecting the people of Pakistan but rather it serves to save the interest of other nations.

Khan had earlier claimed the Opposition's no-confidence motion against him was a foreign plot. His claims were that foreign funds were being channelled from abroad to overthrow him in light of his independent foreign policy with its neighbour China and other countries such as Russia.

Following massive and devastating floods, Pakistani authorities are battling to keep the nation’s largest lake from overflowing its banks and drowning neighbouring towns. The disaster management agency said that the flood fatalities increased by another 24.

The agency reported that the monsoon rains and melting glaciers of the northern mountains of Pakistan caused floods and the death toll rose to 1,314, including 458 children.

The largest freshwater lake in Pakistan displaced&nbsp;nearly 100,000 people from their homes in an effort to drain enough water to prevent the lake from overflowing. However, the lake’s water levels continue to be high.

Recently, Miftah Ismail, the finance minister, said that the cost of damage is more than $160 million in aid to be helped by the UN for flood victims.

During an interview with CNBC, Ismail said, "The total damage is close to $10 billion, perhaps more." He further added, "Clearly it is not enough. In spite of meager resources Pakistan will have to do much of the heavy lifting, " Reuters reported.

The disaster management chief claimed that multiple climate change occurrences, such as four heatwaves and numerous forest fires, preceded the floods that submerged a third of the country and affected over 33 million people.

Pakistan's Geo News said that its senior reporter, Ali Imran Syed went missing on Friday (October 23). The reporter, who left his house to go to a bakery did not return even after many hours. His family told Geo News that Imran Ali Syed left his phone in his house before heading out. His car was parked outside his house at the time of the disappearance.

The police have been informed of Ali&nbsp;Imran Syed's disappearance.

Other media reports suggest that the disappearance of Syed has come just days after he obtained video footage of Nawaz Sharif's son-in-law being arrested from a hotel in Karachi.

Captain Safdar, former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's son-in-law, was arrested and released earlier this week. Nawaz Sharif, who is in UK for medical treatment, condemned this and told reporters that there was a 'state above state' in Pakistan. The reference was taken to be aimed at Pakistan Army.

Journalists in Pakistan have always been under threat. The mysterious disappearances or even killing of journalists has had many pointing fingers at Pakistani establishment. This has been especially true when journalist criticising the establishment have disappeared mysteriously.

In May this year, editor of an ethnic Baloch news website was found dead in Sweden. Sajid Hussain, the journalist, was forced to flee Pakistan in 2012 after he got death threats. Soon after he was found dead, BBC reported that a press freedom charity had pointed fingers at Pakistani intelligence for Hussain's death.

Again in July, a prominent Pakistani journalist who raised voice against Pakistani establishment went missing. Matuiullah Jan, who went missing from Islamabad, had previously been attacked in 2017.

In an interview to an American NGO, Committee to Protect Journalists, in February, Jan said that his broadcast career turned south after a military spokesman publicly displayed his name and photo on a list of journalists who were accused of distributing anti-state propaganda.

Though he did not name Pakistani military openly, his dismay against it and Imran Khan government came to the fore once again in light of the developments surrounding his son-in-law Muhammad Safdar's brief arrest on Monday.

"This country (Pakistan) there are two governments running parallelly. There is a state above state. This is clear from what happened yesterday and today. I speak this out of experience and I do not speak without facts. My contentions have been proven from what has been happening," said Sharif.&nbsp;

It is not unknown that Pakistani military wields enormous power and hold influence over the civilian government is Pakistan but Nawaz Sharif has particularly been susceptible to this. Nawaz Sharif's government was toppled by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999 and Sharif was forced to go in exile.&nbsp;

Nawaz Sharif's son-in-law Muhammad Safdar was briefly arrested from hotel room in Karachi on Monday. He was released on Monday itself. But there are allegations that Inspector General of Sindh was under pressure to file FIR against Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz and her husband, and that he was kidnapped when he attempted to resist the political pressure. The Army chief directed the Karachi Corps Commander to "immediately inquire into the circumstances" to determine the facts and file a report as soon as possible, according to a statement issued by the military's media wing.

The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, has announced its intention to impose a complete nation-wide ban on cow slaughter in Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is reported to have obtained the approval of the parliamentary group of his party though further action on the enactment of legislation is awaited.&nbsp;

The import of beef, however, is likely to be allowed for consumption by the beef-eaters.

The estimated population of over 22 million in multi-ethnic and multi-religious Sri Lanka is comprised of Buddhists (70.2%), Hindus (12.6%) and Muslims (also described as Sri Lankan Moors)(9.7%), and Roman Catholic Christians (6.1%) with a sprinkling of Burghers who are descendants of Europeans settled in Sri Lanka and married to Sri Lankan women.

Sri Lankans are by and large meat-eaters. However, for reasons of religion and culture, the Buddhists and Hindus, who venerate cow, are opposed to beef and thus are against cow slaughter. For Muslims and Christians (particularly of European descent) on the other hand, beef is a part of their staple diet.&nbsp;

The per capita availability of beef per year is the second-highest (1.8kg) though far behind that of chicken (7.9kg) but much ahead of pork ( 0.32kg) &nbsp;and mutton ( 0.1kg).&nbsp;

Sporadic demands have been made in the past for a complete ban on cow slaughter. The net result was the Animal Protection Act of 1958 (amended in 1994) which prohibits, inter-alia, the slaughter of cows and calves below age 12.&nbsp;

The influential Sinhala-Buddhists, particularly the members of the Buddhist clergy, however, have pressurised the successive governments, albeit unsuccessfully so far, for an outright ban on cow slaughter.

Reason behind fresh proposal on cow-slaughter ban:

In recent months the Rajapaksa brothers have considerably consolidated their political power in Sri Lanka. &nbsp; 
Gotabaya Rajapaksa was elected as President in November 2019. More recently Mahinda Rajapaksa was reappointed as Prime Minister of the country after his party SLPP won the parliamentary elections by big margins in August 2020. It secured 145 out of 225 Seats. &nbsp;

Prima-facie, the Rajapaksa brothers do not have any compelling reasons to please or appease; neither majority Sinhala Buddhists nor Hindu minorities by announcing their intention to ban cow slaughter. The opinion of the Muslim or Christian minorities, who have very limited influence, does not seem to matter politically.

Yet, there are two plausible explanations for the announcement within less than one month of assuming power. &nbsp; 
First, this could be a way for Rajapaksas&nbsp;to say 'Thank You' to Sinhala Buddhists whose whole-hearted support to SLPP party was an important factor in the party's resounding electoral victory.&nbsp;

The announcement may also have been made to reassure them that their demand (for the ban) remains a priority for the government.&nbsp;

More importantly, however, is the need for sustained support from the Sinhala Buddhist majority in the context of the proposed 20th amendment to the Constitution which is meant to neutralise /dilute the 19th amendment of 2015 introduced by the previous government to curb the powers of the Executive President, while strengthening parliament and independent commissions.&nbsp;

As a bonus, the Sri Lankan leadership may be hoping to win some brownie points with the indigenous Sri Lankan Hindus Tamil minorities in the Northern Provincial Council, who continue to be denied some of the rights envisaged under the 13th amendment, particularly those pertaining to land and police.

It is a different matter that the ban is unlikely to please them beyond a point as they fully realise that but for the demand from the Sinhala Buddhist majority the issue would have never come on the table.&nbsp;

What next?

The ban if and when imposed may deepen the divide between the nationalist Sinhala Buddhists and Muslims. Sri Lanka has a long history of ethnic conflicts.&nbsp;

Even though the international focus was on the longest bloody conflict (1983-2009) between the Sri Lankan Tamils led by LTTE and the Sri Lankan government dominated by the Sinhala Buddhists, there have been numerous incidents of clashes between the Buddhists and Muslims in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

A certain degree of &nbsp;Islamophobia is discernible in Sri Lanka. The Buddhists&nbsp;have been adversely commenting on the Islamic religious and cultural traditions such as wearing a Burka (Veil) by Muslim women or their insistence on eating only “Halal” meat. The Buddhist claim that the process of Halal, is painful and against the Buddhist ethos of compassion.&nbsp;

The trust deficit has deepened following the attacks on Churches and luxury hotels in and around Colombo in April 2019 as the local radicalised Muslim organizations were suspected to have played a role in providing support in this act of terror which left several hundred dead.&nbsp;

The anti-Muslim anguish found reflection in the Buddhist-Muslim clashes&nbsp;the following month which lasted for almost ten days. The human rights organisations worldwide have commented upon what they say are increasing incidents of violation of human rights of Muslims in Sri Lanka.

The ban will not be without any economic implications. The import of beef would entail further strain on depleted foreign reserves, besides adding to its cost and putting a burden on the pockets of the consumers.&nbsp;

It may also cause loss of some jobs though the supporters of ban argue that it would open avenues and employment opportunities in the dairy sector.&nbsp;

There are also issues related to infrastructure for the upkeep of barren and thus economically unproductive cows. Will the Buddhists agree to the killing or export of such cows?

Will the government overlook the likely socio-economic implications and go ahead? It remains to be seen as to when and how the Sri Lankan Government would translate its declared objective into legislation.

The import of beef would entail further strain on depleted foreign reserves, besides adding to its cost and putting a burden on the pockets of the consumers. It may also cause loss of some jobs though the supporters of ban argue that it would open avenues and employment opportunities in the dairy sector. There are also issues related to infrastructure for the upkeep of barren and thus economically unproductive cows. Will the Buddhists agree to the killing or export of such cows? Will the government overlook the likely socio-economic implications and go ahead? It remains to be seen as to when and how the Sri Lankan Government would translate its declared objective into legislation.
