‘SNL’ gives Ted Cruz his own version of ‘Sesame Street’

<p>The last time Cecily Strong played Fox News host Jeanine Pirro on 'Saturday Night Live,'&nbsp;it seemed like she might be saying goodbye to her longtime TV home. (She did, after all, end the segment by singing “My Way” and dousing herself in a giant box of wine.)</p>

<p>But to the benefit of the show, Strong did not leave “SNL,” and she was back Saturday playing Pirro in the show’s cold open. She would get a more memorable moment in the spotlight later in the night — for now, the segment belonged to a rookie cast member, James Austin Johnson, who has rapidly become one of “SNL”’s most versatile celebrity impressionists and brought his capable sendup of former President Donald Trump to the program for the first time.</p>

<p>Strong began by interviewing a guest she introduced as “an American brave enough to stand up and say, screw you science — I know Joe Rogan.” That turned out to be Pete Davidson playing Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who tested positive for the coronavirus last week and confirmed, in a combative interview Friday, that he was not vaccinated.</p>

<p>Davidson, as Rodgers, defended his ambiguous remarks about his vaccination status. “I never lied,” he said. “I took all my teammates into a huddle, got all their faces 3 inches away from my wet mouth, and told them trust me, I’m more or less immunized. Go team!”</p>

<p>He added, “At the end of the day, my record is still 7-1. Meaning, of the eight people I’ve infected, seven are fine.”</p>

<p>Strong also interviewed Alex Moffat, playing Glenn Youngkin, the Republican governor-elect of Virginia. And as usual, she was joined by guests that she does not recognize or particularly care about, including Chloe Fineman as Miley Cyrus, Culkin as Jason Mraz and Ed Sheeran as Ed Sheeran.</p>

<p>But just as the sketch seemed to be winding down, Nwodim said, “I’m sick and tired of interviewing people who are not icons. Please welcome: me.” And out strode the real-life Warwick, who sat down in a chair opposite her. Nwodim asked the singer, “Dionne, why are you perfect?” Warwick replied, “My darling, I am not perfect. I’m just very, very good.” Their brief duet of “What the World Needs Now” that followed was almost too generous but we’ll take it anyway.</p>

<p>New hosting duties at Saturday Night Live are on their way as Jonathan Majors and Simu Liu will be making their debut on the show. Apart from them, Taylor Swift and Saweetie have been set as the respective musical guests.</p>

<p>Comedian Norm Macdonald, a former 'Saturday Night Live' writer and performer who was 'Weekend Update' host when Bill Clinton and OJ Simpson provided comic fodder during the 1990s, has died.<br />

Macdonald, who was 61, died Tuesday after having cancer for nine years, but keeping it private, according to Brillstein Entertainment Partners, his management firm in Los Angeles.<br />
<br />
He never reached the same television heights after being fired from 'SNL' in 1998 but was an indefatigable stand-up comic and popular talk show guest whose death provoked an outpouring from fellow comedians.<br />
<br />
"Norm was in a comedy genre of his own," tweeted Sarah Silverman. "No one like him on this planet. Please do yourself a favour and watch his stuff."<br />
<br />
Macdonald, the son of two schoolteachers, was raised in Quebec City, Canada. He was a stand-up comic and briefly a writer for the sitcom 'Roseanne' when he was picked to join the cast of 'Saturday Night Live' in 1993.<br />
<br />
He became known for his esoteric impressions, including Burt Reynolds, who gave Will Ferrell's Alex Trebek character grief on 'Celebrity Jeopardy'. He also impersonated Bob Dole, Larry King and David Letterman.<br />
<br />
His deadpan style and skills as a writer made him the choice to host 'Weekend Update'.<br />
<br />
Simpson was a favourite target. Macdonald opened the fake newscast the week of the former football star's acquittal on murder charges by saying, "Well, it's finally official. Murder is legal in the state of California."<br />

Macdonald was fired in the middle of the season in 1998 by NBC Entertainment executive Don Ohlmeyer, a friend of Simpson's who reportedly didn't appreciate the 'SNL' star making Simpson the near-constant butt of jokes.<br />

"I was never bitter," Macdonald said in the oral history 'Live From New York', released in 2002.<br />
<br />
"I always understood that Ohlmeyer could fire me, because he was the guy who owned the cameras, so that didn't bother me. I was always happy that 'SNL' gave me a chance."<br />

He went on Letterman's show to announce that he was fired. During a commercial break, Letterman asked him, "This is like some Andy Kaufman thing with fake wrestling, right?" Macdonald recalled. But it wasn't.<br />

Letterman was a fan who made Macdonald one of the guests in the CBS 'Late Show' host's final run of shows.<br />
In 2016, Letterman told The Washington Post, that the show would have had Macdonald on every week "if we could".<br />

<p>Then towards the end of the sketch Kenan Thompson's anchor character said, "When we come back, we'll talk about the presidential race between Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Kanye West,". Issa Rae's character then fired back, "Kanye? F him!"</p>

'SNL' kick starts its 46th season with first-ever LA drive-in premiere

<p>It was perhaps the most anticipated 'Saturday Night Live' season premiere in almost 20 years — the show’s first live broadcast in more than six months, hosted by Chris Rock, and its first to be produced under the new guidelines of the coronavirus era.</p>

<p>The last live episode of&nbsp; 'SNL' had been broadcast March 7; it was hosted by Daniel Craig and featured a few segments in which the show tried to find what humor it could in the looming pandemic. Then the show announced it was suspending its season altogether, only to come back with three episodes of remotely produced sketches, filmed mostly at the homes of its cast members.</p>

<p>'SNL' tends to generate its biggest audiences in presidential election years, and the series’ creator, Lorne Michaels, further stoked expectations by tapping Jim Carrey to play former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee.</p>

<p>But the show is also contending with a slew of new health and safety regulations, and as recently as a few days ago, Michaels wasn’t entirely sure that he and his cast and crew could stick the landing: “We’re going to be as surprised as everyone else when it actually goes on,” he told The New York Times in an interview. And questions lingered before Saturday as to whether a live audience would attend. (It did, under visible restrictions.)</p>

<p>That would have all been challenging enough. But then 'SNL' had to start its season by recapping a week in which President Donald Trump was hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19 and in which the first lady, Melania Trump, along with several Republican senators and high-ranking Republican officials, tested positive for the coronavirus.</p>

<p>Perhaps the closest comparable moment in 'SNL' history was the season opener of Sept. 29, 2001, the show’s first new broadcast after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. That episode began with a call for unity from Rudy Giuliani, then the mayor of New York, who was flanked by police officers and firefighters as he told the audience, “Even as we grieve for our loved ones, it’s up to us to face the future with renewed determination.” Paul Simon played “The Boxer,” and Michaels famously asked Giuliani, “Can we be funny?” Giuliani answered, “Why start now?”</p>

<p>This time around, 'SNL' simply opened with a sendup of Tuesday’s chaotic debate between Trump and Biden.</p>

<p>The segment opened with a voice-over promising a replay of the debate, “even though Tuesday feels like 100 days ago.” Onstage, Beck Bennett played the hapless moderator, Chris Wallace of Fox News, while Alec Baldwin returned to his recurring role as Trump.</p>

You get to date a famous woman and everyone`s delighted, but when I do it the world wants to punch me in the throat. What`d I do?" Davidson, who has been related to Gerber since October, further added, "If I`m your type of guy that your daughter, or mother, is into, then trust me, I`m the best-case scenario." Davidson dated `Once Upon a Time in Hollywood` actress Margaret Qualley, 25, before his affair with Gerber. The comic was seen flirting with 46-year-old Kate Beckinsale at a Golden Globes after-party earlier this year. He and 26-year-old Ariana Grande both ended their relationship in the fall of 2018. Davidson, referring to Kylie Jenner`s ex said: "There are a million guys who look like me, and I`m the only one with a job. It`s like me or Tyga." Later when asked about his plans for holidays, Davidson hinted at a rehab stint and said, "I`m going on a little vacation. The kind of vacation where insurance pays for some of it, and they take your phone and shoelaces. And you have roommates, but it still costs like $100,000." Jost said he wanted Davidson to know that many people care about him and read out a few positive tweets.
