Shekhar Kapur is working to make that a reality as he announced his plans of making a franchise like that in India. In a recent interview, Shekhar said that Indians are accustomed to all things “otherworldly” and this is why he plans to make something that is born out of India and not the West. He also made sure that the project will come out of India and not the West.</p>

<p>Shekhar Kapur said, “Will make a film franchise like <em>Harry Potter</em>, that comes out of India and not the West.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>He revealed, “I am actually planning a project, which is kind of the Indian <em>Harry Potter</em>. I'm not making Harry Potter. But the Indian equivalent to it. Same genre. That genre of Harry Potter because I think in India, with the market we have, we are so used to things that are otherworldly. We've grown up with those kind of stories. I am now developing and probably will make a film franchise like <em>Harry Potter,</em> that comes out of India and not the West.”</p>

<p>On his other&nbsp;plans, he also revealed that he plans to revive Sushant Singh Rajput film that had to pause since the actor died by suicide. He said, “I wanted to make <em>Paani</em> as an Indian production. Because one of the things that I always felt was, <em>Slumdog Millionaire,</em> even though it made around $400 million worldwide, was not called an Indian film. I really wanted <em>Paani </em>to be an Indian film. I came back to India to make it, even though at one point, I was thinking of making it in Spanish. I had thought of setting it in Mexico City, because we have the same problems over there, too. The same confrontations and the culture is the same. But I lost about five, six years of my life at that time.”</p>

<p>Cinema, at large, has evidently moved away from feel-good rom-com. Sure, there are a few made and strategically released during Valentine's Day each year, but the number has lessened. I have always craved a good, wholesome love story on the big screen and Shekhar Kapur's new film What's Love got to do with it? is just the perfect film for a hungry soul. It envelops you with its earnest story, it makes you love and laugh with the characters and puts things in perspective. Comprising of a multi-cultural cast and set in a multi-cultural Britain, <em>What's Love Got To Do With It?</em> puts a smile on your face from the first frame itself.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The Khans, originally from Pakistan, have been settled in Britain for many years and have opened up to British cultures in many ways. They even open up their home to British neighbours for all important family events. Yet cross-cultural relationships and marriages are shunned.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The elder son of the family Kazim aka Kaz (Shazad Latif), a doctor, has been raised as a Britisher but knows he can't ever cross the line and marry out of his community. He smokes and drinks on the sly and is best friends with next-door neighbour, documentary filmmaker Zoe (Lily James).<br />
<br />
He agrees to go in for an arranged marriage- or as he explains to Zoe- assisted marriage to keep his parents happy. While Zoe is alarmed by the idea, she eventually decides to make his journey of finding a suitable match and settling down as her new subject for a film.&nbsp;<br />

Kaz's parents Aisha (Shabana Azmi) and Zahid (Jeff Mirza), who have themselves had an arranged marriage, find a suitable match for him- a 22-year law student from Lahore called Maymouna (Sajal Aly). Kaz and Maymouna agree to marry almost instantly- within a few meets over skype and facetime- a fact that Zoe takes time to digest. She herself has a bad streak when it comes to finding a perfect partner. Mostly relying on one-night stands and quick dates, Zoe's love life is far from ideal- much to the dismay of her mother Cath (Emma Thompson), who is Aisha's best friend.&nbsp;<br />

As Kaz announces his engagement, Zoe and Cath travel to Pakistan with the Khan family for the wedding. But Zoe keeps questioning Kaz's decision of hastening the process only to be told that he cannot go against his family and that love will find its way into the marriage.&nbsp;<br />

Written by Jemima Khan, the former wife of Imran Khan, the film beautifully depicts the cultural differences of two distinct communities. It also gives a realistic view of the Pakistani youth, who want to keep a balance between tradition and modernity. They may want to smoke a 'J' at the mehendi but only after following rituals and post the exit of the elders from the party. The city of Lahore to strikes a balance- between popular upbeat Bollywood numbers and traditional, mystical <em>kawalis</em> (Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in a cameo) in night bazaars- the city is able to break a few myths about it for both Kaz and the viewers.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Ably written, Kapur film never goes overboard harping about the importance of love. It is the primary emotion of the narrative for sure, but it never feels forced or dramatic- much like the narrative which is free-flowing and simple. The story also never takes sides or completely dismisses the arranged marriage set-up which is a widely common practice in every other household in South-Asian countries.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The actors are well-cast. Shabana Azmi delivers a credible performance like always. Emma Thompson is a scene stealer with her witty, goofball act. Sajal Aly delivers a restraint performance and looks breathtaking. The leads- Lily James and Shazad Latif also deliver credible, earnest performances as two individuals who have for long hidden their true feelings and instead focussed on what's right.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
What's Love Got To Do With It? takes a bit of time to establish the plot but you find yourself eventually warming up to its simple and heartwarming story. It's a no-frills, slightly predictable but effective take on an emotion that is commonly talked about- love and presents a very realistic picture of how, ultimately, it is all that one needs.&nbsp;</p>

I have always craved a good, wholesome love story on the big screen and Shekhar Kapur's new film What's Love got to do with it? is just the perfect film for a hungry soul. It envelops you with its earnest story, it makes you love and laugh with the characters and puts things in perspective. Comprising of a multi-cultural cast and set in a multi-cultural Britain, What's Love Got To Do With It? puts a smile on your face from the first frame itself. The Khans, originally from Pakistan, have been settled in Britain for many years and have opened up to British cultures in many ways. They even open up their home to British neighbours for all important family events. Yet cross-cultural relationships and marriages are shunned. The elder son of the family Kazim aka Kaz (Shazad Latif), a doctor, has been raised as a Britisher but knows he can't ever cross the line and marry out of his community. He smokes and drinks on the sly and is best friends with next-door neighbour, documentary filmmaker Zoe (Lily James). He agrees to go in for an arranged marriage- or as he explains to Zoe- assisted marriage to keep his parents happy. While Zoe is alarmed by the idea, she eventually decides to make his journey of finding a suitable match and settling down as her new subject for a film. Kaz's parents Aisha (Shabana Azmi) and Zahid (Jeff Mirza), who have themselves had an arranged marriage, find a suitable match for him- a 22-year law student from Lahore called Maymouna (Sajal Aly). Kaz and Maymouna agree to marry almost instantly- within a few meets over skype and facetime- a fact that Zoe takes time to digest. She herself has a bad streak when it comes to finding a perfect partner. Mostly relying on one-night stands and quick dates, Zoe's love life is far from ideal- much to the dismay of her mother Cath (Emma Thompson), who is Aisha's best friend. As Kaz announces his engagement, Zoe and Cath travel to Pakistan with the Khan family for the wedding. But Zoe keeps questioning Kaz's decision of hastening the process only to be told that he cannot go against his family and that love will find its way into the marriage. Written by Jemima Khan, the former wife of Imran Khan, the film beautifully depicts the cultural differences of two distinct communities. It also gives a realistic view of the Pakistani youth, who want to keep a balance between tradition and modernity. They may want to smoke a 'J' at the mehendi but only after following rituals and post the exit of the elders from the party. The city of Lahore to strikes a balance- between popular upbeat Bollywood numbers and traditional, mystical kawalis (Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in a cameo) in night bazaars- the city is able to break a few myths about it for both Kaz and the viewers. Ably written, Kapur film never goes overboard harping about the importance of love. It is the primary emotion of the narrative for sure, but it never feels forced or dramatic- much like the narrative which is free-flowing and simple. The story also never takes sides or completely dismisses the arranged marriage set-up which is a widely common practice in every other household in South-Asian countries. The actors are well-cast. Shabana Azmi delivers a credible performance like always. Emma Thompson is a scene stealer with her witty, goofball act. Sajal Aly delivers a restraint performance and looks breathtaking. The leads- Lily James and Shazad Latif also deliver credible, earnest performances as two individuals who have for long hidden their true feelings and instead focussed on what's right. What's Love Got To Do With It? takes a bit of time to establish the plot but you find yourself eventually warming up to its simple and heartwarming story. It's a no-frills, slightly predictable but effective take on an emotion that is commonly talked about- love and presents a very realistic picture of how, ultimately, it is all that one needs.

WION spoke to Shekhar Kapur about his comeback, his absence from the Hindi film industry and working with Emma Thompson.</p>

<p>Shekhar Kapur, a young chartered accountant left his job in the UK and decided to become a filmmaker. He made his debut as a director 40 years back with 'Masoom' starring Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah. Kapur tells us why he never made a film like 'Masoom' or something in the same genre.</p>

<p>"I often think about how did I pull off a film like Masoom. And I realised I think we lack naivety. Ultimately creativity is naive. Often when people ask why didn't I make a film like 'Masoom' I say I can't because I am not that naive anymore. I am burdened with skill, with knowledge of filmmaking, with my success as an international filmmaker."</p>

<p>The 'Masoom' director whose latest film is set to open Saudi Arabia's Red Sea Film Festival on December 1 says how easy it was for him to get Shabana Azmi onboard for the film.</p>

<p>"I just called her and told her, let's do a film together and she said yes let's do it. That's all and when we were working on the film she kept saying Shekhar you haven't changed a bit in these 40 years."</p>

<p>Oscar award-winning actor Emma Thompson on the other hand was someone even Kapur didn't think would come onboard.</p>

<p>"We never knew if we would get Emma. We tried. I spoke to her one day, I talked about the film. She thought about it. Then of course Jamima being Jamima took her for a long walk in Hyde park and then she came back and said 'Yeah, I'll do it'. What an amazing prize having Emma on the sets was. Other than the fact that Shabana and Emma have become best friends. I think they still talk to each other every week. And that relationship also helped the film."</p>

<p>But we hardly see him making films for the Hindi film industry. The three films we remember are Masoom, Mr India and Bandit Queen but why don't we see more of Shekhar Kapur in India? Here's what he had to say.</p>

<p>"I did come back. I did try and make 'Paani' once. You know making a film is like going climbing. So you are roped to a lot of people and you are climbing this ledge. If one person is not willing to go because you are roped to each other, everybody falls. And it's really important for the producers the actors, the directors all to have the exact same goal, the same vision. So we found that we were not aligned in our vision."</p>

<p>But the good news is that we will see him soon as he is coming back to make Paani as he has the right producers for the film with whom he thinks he can work with and who have the same vision as his for the film. We all know late actor Sushant Singh Rajput was in talks with Kapur and was an integral part of 'Paani' to which the filmmaker says that he was perfect for the role.</p>

<p>"When I took on Sushant. He wasn't a big star. I needed somebody who wasn't a big star. Who actually grows through the film and you discover this person through the film. So I'll find somebody like that. It was a pity. Actually, it's far more complicated. Between the time Yash Raj and Sushant broke up to the point of his passing away it was three or four years. By that time I had already left and was doing other stuff. Sushant was perfect for it that time."</p>

<p>Shekhar Kapur was recently spotted catching up with 'Baahubali' 'RRR' filmmaker Rajamouli in Hyderabad. So talking about the booming south film industry he said.</p>

<p>Shekhar also revealed during the interview that he plan to launch his daghter Kaveri as an actor. Kaveri is his 21-year-old daughter with ex-wife Suchitra Krishnamoorthy, who is also a songwriter and singer. Kapur has previously directed her music video and now is planning to launch her in Bollywood.</p>

The ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday announced Kapur’s appointment.</p>

<p>Kapur, whose family came to India after the partition, burst out on the Indian film scene after his successful family drama, Masoom, in 1983, but his nation-wide fame came with Mr India (1987). The film was noticed for its futuristic approach and a different style of filmmaking. Also, this was a brave stance on making a sci-fi film in Hindi.</p>

Shekhar Kapur reveals 'Paani' script, Sushant Singh Rajput's film that got shelved

<p>Bollywood clearly has a lot of answering too. Actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death by suicide sparked off debate about nepotism in Bollywood and while there has been a raging conversation about insider vs outsider in the Hindi film industry, veterans like AR Rahman and now Reul Pookutty too have revealed that they have suffered due to lobbying and bullying in the film industry.<br />

Pookutty said that he nearly had "a breakdown" after nobody showed interest in working with him in the Hindi film industry post his win at the Academy Awards.<br />

Pookutty took to Twitter in response to a statement by filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. "Dear @shekharkapur ask me about it, I had gone through near breakdown as nobody was giving me work in Hindi films and regional cinema held me tight after I won the Oscar... There were production houses told me at my face" we don`t need you" but still I love my industry, for it....," said the sound designer in his tweet.<br />

His tweet came after Kapur on Sunday tweeted an excerpt from a radio-based interview of music maestro AR Rahman.<br />
During the interview, Rahman was asked why he works more frequently in Tamil cinema than in Hindi films. To which he replied, "I don`t say no to good movies, but I think there is a gang, which due to misunderstandings, is spreading some false rumours."<br />

Kapur, in a tweet, said that Rahman often faced difficulties in the Hindi film industry because of his Oscar wins. "You know what your problem is @arrahman? You went and got #Oscars. An Oscar is the kiss of death in Bollywood. It proves you have more talent than Bollywood can handle...," Kapur tweeted on Sunday.</p>

Pookutty said that he nearly had "a breakdown" after nobody showed interest in working with him in the Hindi film industry post his win at the Academy Awards. Pookutty took to Twitter in response to a statement by filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. "Dear @shekharkapur ask me about it, I had gone through near breakdown as nobody was giving me work in Hindi films and regional cinema held me tight after I won the Oscar... There were production houses told me at my face" we don`t need you" but still I love my industry, for it....," said the sound designer in his tweet. His tweet came after Kapur on Sunday tweeted an excerpt from a radio-based interview of music maestro AR Rahman. During the interview, Rahman was asked why he works more frequently in Tamil cinema than in Hindi films. To which he replied, "I don`t say no to good movies, but I think there is a gang, which due to misunderstandings, is spreading some false rumours." Kapur, in a tweet, said that Rahman often faced difficulties in the Hindi film industry because of his Oscar wins. "You know what your problem is @arrahman? You went and got #Oscars. <p>As the 65th National Film Award was announced today, there was a mixed reaction to late Sridevi winning the Best Actress award for her performance in the hit film <em>MOM</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While many congratulated the jury for honouring Sridevi posthumously, many felt that it was merely done as she was in fact, no more. The jury head of the National Film Award, Shekhar Kapur also revealed that he was of the same sentiment, of not awarding Sridevi as there were many other deserving actresses who delivered breathtaking performances and who needed this award as part of a career boost.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As reported by a leading daily, Shekhar Kapur while announcing Sridevi’s name said, "The best actress is Sridevi for Mom and I promise you it is not my relationship with her. Every morning when I came here, I would ask everyone to vote once again. I would look at all the actors, talk about them and I would say, ‘there should be not Sridevi, not Sridevi’! We used to take a vote and it always came back to Sridevi. It was me who fought that it shouldn’t be Sridevi. We are all emotionally involved with Sridevi. I used to say, ‘don’t give her an award because she died, it is unfair on the other girls’. They have also worked hard for 10-12 years, they too have a career."<br />

After Sridevi won the award, her family issued a joint statement that read:&nbsp;<br />

The central panel comprises a chairperson and 10 other members, including five regional chairpersons who head the respective regional panels.<br />
<br />
Film writer Imtiaz Hussain, known for his works in films like <em>Astitva&nbsp</em>(2000) and <em>Parinda</em>&nbsp(1989) will be the regional chairperson of South panel. Mehboob, who penned the lyrics for the Hindi (dubbed) version of 1995 Tamil romantic drama Bombay, was appointed as the regional chairperson of South II panel, the sources said.<br />

Actress Gautami Tadimalla, who is known for her work in Tamil films, is the regional chairman of the North panel, while director Rahul Rawail known for films like "Love Story" (1981), "Betaab" (1983), "Arjun" (1985) and "Jo Bole So Nihaal" (2005), was chosen as the regional chairperson of the Western panel, they said.<br />

Director P Sheshadri, a known name in Kannada cinema, is the regional chairperson of Eastern panel.<br />

<p>On Monday, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-forensic-results-out-sridevi-died-of-accidental-drowning-report-34121">Dubai Police released the forensic report </a>which determined that Sridevi&#39;s death was due to accidental drowning. While there is no official word on when the last rites of the actress would be conducted, reports suggest that the body will be brought back to Mumbai on Tuesday morning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sources have revealed that Boney Kapoor&#39;s family are awaiting approvals for the release of the<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/public-prosecutors-office-to-carry-out-legal-procedures-on-sridevis-death-dubai-police-34142"> body from the public prosecutor.</a></p>

While there is no official word on when the last rites of the actress would be conducted, reports suggest that the body will be brought back to Mumbai on Tuesday morning. Sources have revealed that Boney Kapoor's family are awaiting approvals for the release of the body from the public prosecutor.
