<p>In Sanjay Leela Bhansali&rsquo;s<em> Padmaavat, </em>the eyes do the talking. They speak of the havoc that Khilji is set to create in Chittor, they speak of the determination and grit that Ratan Singh has while fighting a barbaric army and they speak of love, pride and honour when Padmavati bids farewell to her husband. Bhansali&rsquo;s film scores because he makes the eyes speak. Amid the grandeur, the visually stunning frames- the three lead actors emote through their eyes and act out a known story set in the 13th century.</p>
<p>For a good part of 2017 when the film was initially set to release (but later released in January 2018), the film was in the news due to a false narrative.<br><br>Because when one watches the film, one can see that contrary to the claims made by protesting fringe groups and ignorant state governments, <em>Padmaavat-</em> if anything- upholds the honour of the Rajput community and celebrates the community's 'aan, baan and shaan'.</p>
<p>Through scenes, dialogues and how the story is woven- the community&rsquo;s values, its valour, the way they deal with situations, and their loyalty is highlighted in more ways than one.</p>
<h2>The story of Padmaavat</h2>
<p>Bhansali creates two striking worlds- one of Alauddin Khilji which is dark, grim and unkempt. The other is of Ratan Singh and Padmavati in Chittor- which is lit up, decorated and pristine. &nbsp;And these two worlds collide when Raghav Chetan, a former priest tells Khilji that he can truly be a Sultan of Hind if he has the most beautiful Padmavati by his side and control over the Rajputs. And Khilji, thus, becomes obsessed with the idea of acquiring Padmavati. But the man who only knows the language of loot, plunder and ruthless killing doesn&rsquo;t understand the valour, pride and honour the Rajputs stand by. He also is unaware of the righteous Padmavati and her sharp brain who would never bow down to the wishes of an invader.</p>
<p>Bhansali remains true to his style as he narrates age-old folklore of how Queen Padmavati opted to perform Sati instead of bowing to Khilji&rsquo;s wishes in the most visually stunning way possible. The film is mounted on a large scale and opulence is, many a time, a bit overwhelming. But that&rsquo;s how Bhansali&rsquo;s films always are. Grand, visual extravaganzas with dramatic dialogues and backdrops and <em>Padmaavat </em>is just that. Each scene is elaborate, almost perfect and like a painting making it a treat for the eyes for the greater part of the film.</p>

The film is quite literally from his point of view, and his obsession with Padmavati. They could have named the film after his character, would have saved them a lot of trouble.</p>
<p>Strangely, while Ranveer and Deepika share no scene together, they do share a strange unspoken chemistry that seems missing between Shahid and the actress.</p>

In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, the eyes do the talking. They speak of the havoc that Khilji is set to create in Chittor, they speak of the determination and grit that Ratan Singh has while fighting a barbaric army and they speak of love, pride and honour when Padmavati bids farewell to her husband. Bhansali’s film scores because he makes the eyes speak. Amid the grandeur, the visually stunning frames- the three lead actors emote through their eyes and act out a known story set in the 13th century. For a good part of 2017 when the film was initially set to release (but later released in January 2018), the film was in the news due to a false narrative. Because when one watches the film, one can see that contrary to the claims made by protesting fringe groups and ignorant state governments, Padmaavat- if anything- upholds the honour of the Rajput community and celebrates the community's 'aan, baan and shaan'. Through scenes, dialogues and how the story is woven- the community’s values, its valour, the way they deal with situations, and their loyalty is highlighted in more ways than one. The story of Padmaavat Bhansali creates two striking worlds- one of Alauddin Khilji which is dark, grim and unkempt. The other is of Ratan Singh and Padmavati in Chittor- which is lit up, decorated and pristine. And these two worlds collide when Raghav Chetan, a former priest tells Khilji that he can truly be a Sultan of Hind if he has the most beautiful Padmavati by his side and control over the Rajputs. And Khilji, thus, becomes obsessed with the idea of acquiring Padmavati. But the man who only knows the language of loot, plunder and ruthless killing doesn’t understand the valour, pride and honour the Rajputs stand by. He also is unaware of the righteous Padmavati and her sharp brain who would never bow down to the wishes of an invader. Bhansali remains true to his style as he narrates age-old folklore of how Queen Padmavati opted to perform Sati instead of bowing to Khilji’s wishes in the most visually stunning way possible. The film is mounted on a large scale and opulence is, many a time, a bit overwhelming. But that’s how Bhansali’s films always are. Grand, visual extravaganzas with dramatic dialogues and backdrops and Padmaavat is just that. Each scene is elaborate, almost perfect and like a painting making it a treat for the eyes for the greater part of the film. However, an old interview of the actress is going viral on social media, where she is seen recalling a grilling encounter with her uncle-director on the sets of her debut film, <em>Malaal</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While promoting her debut film, Sharmin revealed in 2019 that SLB, who was the producer of the film, never turned up on the sets except one day. The actress was filming a song sequence that day and was very nervous to see her uncle and mentor supervising the shot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sanjay Leela Bhansali's <em>Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar </em>is being&nbsp;widely discussed. While, some are praising the show for its grandeur, and cast while others are liking the performance of the actors. Albeit, there is also a section that slams the series for its lack of historical accuracy. Nevertheless, the show continues to make headlines, and the most recent one is about actor Richa Chaddha.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the eight-episode series, Richa played the role of Lajjo, a heartbroken courtesan who is in deep love with a Nawab. In a limited screen presence, Richa managed to impress the audience with her performance. One&nbsp;scene for which she has garnered a huge round of applause from the audience is her drunken dance at the Nawab's wedding.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Discussing the scene, the actor revealed that despite being a teetotaler, she decided to drink a few shots of gin.&nbsp;</p>

But because an actor also needs to see, what's in here that's new for me, I chose Lajjo. I have experimented with characters that have a grey shade, like Bholi Punjaban or Tara in Madam Chief Minister. Basically I get accused of playing only empowerd characters, so I felt the need to break that stereotype and surprise the audience. I wanted to play a part of a hopeless romantic and leave the audience with gooseflesh. That's exactly what's happening. People are calling me in tears."<br />

In the eight-episode series, Richa played the role of Lajjo, a heartbroken courtesan who is in deep love with a Nawab. In a limited screen presence, Richa managed to impress the audience with her performance. One scene for which she has garnered a huge round of applause from the audience is her drunken dance at the Nawab's wedding. One viewer from Pakistan, who goes by the name of Hamd Nawaz on X, said she found everything but Heeramandi in the show. The actual Heeramandi is a red light area in Lahore. In a long thread on X, Hamd listed out in inaccuracies in the show and stated that it does not correctly represent 1940s Lahore.<br />

She then listed out the issues she had with the sets, language, dialogues, soundtrack, and attires, among other things.</p>

<p>"To begin with, where exactly is it set? Lake Como? Amalfi Coast? The most evident landmark still visible from every building in today's remnants of Heera Mandi is the Shahi Qilla- Grand Mosque's doom and minarets skyline. If you call it Lahore, show Lahore," the user said.&nbsp;<br />

She added that if one walks through the actual Heera Mandi, it spans from Taxali Gate to modern-day Cheet Ram Road and does not have a single courtyard. "Those were multi-storey 5/10 Marla Kothas/Makans at max. The social/financial strata it shows never even existed," the user wrote.&nbsp;<br />

She also said that unlike what is shown in the series, Heera Mandi was not a street of glamour but that of exploitation, slavery and filthy poverty. "Also, I didn’t know peer-e-kamil had already been written in the 1940s. Chalo, this is somewhat ignore-able. Anyways Yar, it was not a street of glamour, but of exploitation, slavery and filthy poverty. And those who lived there, at least deserve to be seen as they were."<br />

The user also criticised actress Sharmin Sehgal's performance. She said the weakest link in the series was "the nepo-baby going around with a frozen face, lip fillers and expressionless, rote Urdu," referring to Sharmin Sehgal's Alamzeb.<br />

WION's Shomini Sen wrote in her review of the series, "Sure some characters are shown to be involved in the freedom movement right from the beginning of the show, but the transformation of the rest of the characters in the last two episodes seems very abrupt and slightly out of context. It ultimately makes the entire story feel very hollow. Had Bhansali stuck the story of revenge and greed - Heeramandi would have perhaps had a lasting impact. Instead, it muddles too many things into one plot and tries to be woke - especially in the last scene- and ultimately defeats the purpose the story of the women shunned by society.
