'Terrorist acts': Putin rejects full ceasefire with Ukraine - Here's the REAL reason why

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend Thursday's (May 15) landmark peace talks in Istanbul with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Kremlin confirmed late Wednesday (May 14), ending days of speculation.
It must be noted that these talks were proposed by Putin as an alternative to Zelensky's 30-day ceasefire proposal. The Istanbul talks are the first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine since the war started in 2022.

<h2>Who will attend the meeting on behalf of Russia?</h2>
As per the Kremlin, a lower-level delegation led by nationalist aide Vladimir Medinsky, a hardline aide to Putin and ex-culture minister who was involved in 2022 negotiations, will represent Russia at the meet.
This, as per Kyiv, signals a lack of seriousness about peace. Zelensky had openly challenged Putin to meet face-to-face.
"I am waiting to see who will arrive from Russia. Then I will decide what steps Ukraine should take," said Zelensky on Wednesday.
This statement follows another from Tuesday, in which Zelensky stressed, "This is his (Putin's) war...Therefore, the negotiations should be with him."

US President Donald Trump, currently touring the Middle East, also called for Putin's attendance and hinted that he might travel to Istanbul if Putin showed up &mdash; even offering to mediate.
"If we could end the war, I'd be thinking about that," Trump said.

For Russia, the delegation, as mentioned previously, would be led by Trump loyalist Vladimir Medinsky. The team would also include Deputy Foreign Minister Galuzin, Deputy Defence Minister Fomin, and GRU chief Igor Kostyukov, reports AFP.
Meanwhile, Putin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov were missing from the list of attendees.
Volodymyr Zelensky, as per reports, is expected to attend. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to attend as the United States representative.

Putin to skip first direct peace talks with Ukraine's Zelensky in Turkey — despite proposing them

In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered Ukraine the opportunity to restart peace talks without preconditions, proposing Turkey as the meeting venue. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed a desire for a ceasefire and welcomed Putin to Turkey for dialogues. Both leaders have not met face-to-face since 2019, raising questions about the feasibility of these peace talks.

Russia-Ukraine War: 'Russia asking for too much': JD Vance calls out Moscow

Russia is pushing large numbers of troops into battle, but their progress in Ukraine is slowing sharply due to extremely high losses, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The Washington-based think tank says President Vladimir Putin appears to be ignoring these growing losses in his push for more territorial control to pressure Ukraine in ceasefire negotiations.
So far in 2025, Russia has lost an average of 99 soldiers for every square kilometre of land gained. This is a sharp rise compared to 59 casualties per kilometre during the last four months of 2024.

This includes those led by the United States and former President Donald Trump, who has recently pushed for a peace deal.
Although Trump signed a minerals deal with Ukraine this week, the U.S. has warned it could walk away from the negotiation process if progress isn't made soon.
<h2>Ukraine holding the line with drone power</h2>
Despite Russia&rsquo;s aggressive push, Ukrainian forces are holding strong. The ISW&rsquo;s assessment emphasises that Kyiv&rsquo;s defences remain intact, partly due to their effective use of drone technology.

<h2>The cost of war: Russia&rsquo;s losses in numbers</h2>
According to Ukraine&rsquo;s data cited by the ISW, Russia has gained around 1,627 square kilometres of land in 2025, including areas in Ukraine and Russia&rsquo;s Kursk region, where Ukraine launched an incursion in August last year. However, these gains have come at the cost of 160,600 Russian troop casualties, averaging 99 per square kilometre.
In comparison, between September and December 2024, Russia captured 2,949 square kilometres but lost 174,935 soldiers, about 59 casualties per kilometre.

The think tank said these figures reflect how Russia is now relying on &ldquo;low quality&rdquo; soldiers, which has made complex battlefield operations more difficult and slower. Despite this, Putin is continuing his efforts, hoping to use any progress to force Ukraine into making concessions during negotiations and increase internal pressure on Kyiv.

Russian forces launched heavy attacks on Ukraine’s Kharkiv city, causing widespread destruction and injuring at least 50 people. The assault marks a new escalation in the ongoing war, drawing international condemnation.

Russia-Ukraine War: Kharkiv devastated by Russian strikes, 50 reported injured

On May 1, 2025, a Russian drone strike killed seven people in Oleshky, Kherson region, Ukraine. The attack occurred shortly after Ukraine and the U.S. signed a significant minerals deal. This agreement grants the U.S. preferential access to Ukrainian mineral resources and establishes a joint reconstruction fund, aiming to bolster Ukraine's economy amid ongoing conflict with Russia .

Jain T K, a 27-year-old from Wadakkanchery in Kerala&rsquo;s Thrissur district, has returned home after being caught up in Russia&rsquo;s war with Ukraine. He had travelled to Russia in April last year with the hope of working in support services, roles like electricians, plumbers, drivers, or cooks.
But once there, he and others were made to surrender their Indian passports, given permanent residency, and forced into frontline duty with the Russian Army.

Russia and Ukraine on Sunday (Ap 20) accused each other of violating the fragile 30-hour Easter truce announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin the previous day.
<h2>He said, she said?</h2>
On one hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces continued to shell positions and launch drone attacks despite the supposed halt in hostilities, calling it a "false ceasefire." He reported 387 instances of shelling and 290 drone strikes in the first six hours alone.

Russia, meanwhile, claimed that it was Kyiv which violated the ceasefire. Moscow's defence ministry, as per AFP, insisted it had adhered to the ceasefire, but that it "repelled" repeated attacks, including drone strikes and artillery fire by Ukrainian forces.
The alleged strikes caused civilian casualties, it said, adding that "despite the announcement of the Easter truce, Ukrainian units at night made attempts to attack" its positions in the Donetsk region.&nbsp;

Even as he said that Ukraine would respond "symmetrically" to any Russian attacks, the president of the war-torn nation proposed extending the truce by 30 days.
"30 days could give peace a chance," he said while urging Russia to fully comply.

Putin had announced the truce from Saturday evening until midnight Sunday for "humanitarian reasons" but said Russian forces "must be ready to resist possible breaches of the truce and provocations by the enemy".

President Zelensky also pointed a finger at China, accusing its authorities of either supporting or failing to prevent the recruitment of Chinese citizens to fight in Ukraine.
&ldquo;Beijing knows about this. Russians distribute advertising videos about recruitment through Chinese social networks,&rdquo; he said.
Both sides in the war have relied on foreign fighters since it began. But the presence of Chinese mercenaries in particular has drawn comparisons to North Korean troops, who were reportedly deployed in large numbers to help Russia in its efforts to retake parts of Kursk Oblast.

<h2>Chinese recruits promised big money online</h2>
Ukrainian intelligence says the first wave of Chinese fighters appeared in Russia in the summer of 2023. However, signs of recruitment efforts were visible much earlier.
One post from July 2022 on Douyin, China&rsquo;s version of TikTok, shows a man preparing to leave Beijing for Russia on 1 September. In the video, he says, &ldquo;Your daily salary will be 30,000 Russian rubles. Welcome to Russia!&rdquo; The claim suggests a salary of around $350 per day.
Recruitment videos have continued into this year, with some offering generous incentives. One video promises a sign-up bonus of 2.3 million rubles ($27,000) and an annual salary of 5.2 million rubles ($62,000) to new recruits.

<h2>'Don&rsquo;t come. There is nothing good here'</h2>
Zhao Rui, from Chongqing, became the first known Chinese casualty of the war in December after he was reportedly killed by a Ukrainian drone.
&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t come. There is nothing good here to come to,&rdquo; Zhao had said, according to Chinese media.
A documentary released in March featured a Chinese assault soldier known as &ldquo;Macron&rdquo; speaking to journalist Chai Jing from near Bakhmut.
&ldquo;I realised I might die here someday, so I decided to share some real experiences,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Since Chinese people haven&rsquo;t been at war in a long time, I wanted to show what a regular soldier, especially a foreign one, really goes through in war,&rdquo; he added.

Macron described harsh treatment and prejudice during training. &ldquo;There has been severe racial discrimination since training camp, discriminating against Black people, Arabs, and Chinese,&rdquo; he said.
He added, &ldquo;Russia is reluctant to send their regular Slavic troops to charge on the front lines, so they spend money to recruit mercenaries for front-line charges, where survival chances are extremely low.&rdquo;
Some of the Chinese recruits have ended up in units like Storm-Z, known for sending fighters into high-risk missions. Reports from August showed two young Chinese men dying on their very first deployment with Storm-Z.
Families of Chinese fighters killed in action are reportedly owed 400,000 renminbi, just over $50,000. But reports say those payments are often delayed.
<h2>Contracts that never end</h2>
There are also claims that the Russian military has refused to release Chinese fighters at the end of their contracts.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll terminate your contract only after winning the war,&rdquo; one Chinese soldier recalled being told, during an interview with blogger Lei&rsquo;s Real World in July.
He added, &ldquo;Two of my men deserted. They are making every effort to capture them. If they are caught, they won&rsquo;t live for sure. So I can only wish the two deserters good luck.&rdquo;

As per Politico, Putin's order started on April 1 and will be completed by July 15. It comes as the United States continues to try to broker a cease-fire between Ukraine and Russia.
Russia drafts men aged 18 to 30 years. Since the start of the war hundreds of thousands of potential recruits have fled to avoid joining the military, and to attract the ones still in the country, Putin last year announced a debt waiver.

Trump's ultimatum to Putin: End war or face tariff

Over three years and no end in sight, the Russia-Ukraine war is going brute force on the field and even in cyberspace.&nbsp;
What began as' Moscow's 'special military operation&rsquo; soon escalated to a full-blown attack. For Russia, the war has been oscillating between capturing tactical villages and intercepting drones, while Ukraine has been relying on arms supply from its allies. Is Kyiv really at the mercy of its allies or is it also simultaneously fuelling resources towards its plan B.

The Kremlin has confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is still willing to engage in discussions with US President Donald Trump despite Trump's recent criticism over the lack of progress on a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "The president remains open to contact with President Trump." However, he noted that no phone call had been scheduled between the two leaders at present. "When it is necessary, their conversation will be promptly organised," Peskov added.

<h2>Trump's frustration over Ukraine conflict</h2>
Trump, in a phone interview with NBC News on Sunday, voiced his displeasure at Putin&rsquo;s recent comments regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He described himself as &ldquo;very angry&rdquo; and &ldquo;pissed off,&rdquo; saying, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not going in the right location.&rdquo;
Putin had suggested on Friday that Ukraine should form a transitional government, which could potentially remove Zelensky from power. Trump responded by threatening economic action against Russia, saying, &ldquo;If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia&rsquo;s fault, which it might not be, but if I think it was Russia&rsquo;s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia.&rdquo;

Despite his frustration, Trump acknowledged that he maintains a "very good relationship" with Putin. &ldquo;Putin knows I am angry,&rdquo; he said, adding, &ldquo;the anger dissipates quickly... if he does the right thing.&rdquo;
Peskov said that discussions between Russia and the US are ongoing, focusing on both bilateral relations and efforts to address the Ukraine conflict.
