The United Nations' cultural organisation placed the World Heritage Sites located in Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Lviv on its list of places “in danger” on Friday (September 15), stating that they stand at risk from the war sparked due to the invasion of the country by Russia.

The decision, which was taken in the meeting of UNESCO's annual World Heritage committee in Riyadh, is the first step towards excluding these sites from UNESCO's World Heritage List which features 1,157 sites.

UNESCO, in a statement, said that it had included Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv and the medieval buildings standing in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery site of the city to the list "due to the threat of destruction the Russian offensive poses". 
 
The statement added that the officials decided because "optimal conditions are no longer met to fully guarantee the protection of the Outstanding Universal Value of the property and that it is threatened by potential danger due to the war".

It stated that two historic sites have "remained under permanent threat since the start of the invasion on February 24, 2022". Saint Sophia Cathedral, present in Kyiv, dates back to the 11th century and is among the best-known landmarks of the city. 
 
The western Ukrainian city of Lviv, which is near the Polish border, came into existence in the late Middle Ages and in 1998, the city's historic centre was inscribed on the World Heritage List. 
 
The step was taken after a decision was taken by UNESCO in January to add the centre of the Black Sea port of Odesa in Ukraine to the World Heritage List.

Former Austrian minister Karin Kneissl moved to Russia, along with her two ponies, which she transported to the country via a Russian military plane.

Kneissl, in a conversation with Russia's state-owned Tass news agency, revealed that she would be moving to St Petersburg to work at the Geopolitical Observatory for Russia’s Key Issues [GORKI].

The think tank was set up to "help define the policies for the Russian Federation" with a focus on the Near and Middle East.&nbsp;

"I co-founded the Gorki centre and manage it," Tass news agency quoted Kneissl as saying. "Since there is a lot of work there and it requires a lot of attention, I cannot do this in passing. I decided to move to St. Petersburg for this work."&nbsp;

As per a report by Russian investigative website The Insider, Kneissl's ponies were flown to Saint Petersburg on a military aircraft last week from the Russian air base at Hmeimim in Syria.

"It was impossible for me to drive a lorry through Syria under the circumstances of the war," Kneissl confirmed to news agency AFP on Wednesday (September 13).

"Due to sanctions, there are no flights or DHL (shipping service)," Kneissl wrote on Telegram, flabbergasted that her "move has become a political issue". &nbsp;

The 58-year-old claimed that she was pressured to leave which is why she had temporarily settled in a small village in Lebanon.

In the year 2021, Kneissl joined the Board of Directors of the Russian oil giant Rosneft.

She stepped down from her position in May 2022 after the European Parliament passed a resolution threatening sanctions against Europeans still on the boards of major Russian companies.

Russia claimed last year to have annexed the eastern and southern territories in Ukraine in spite of not having controlled it fully. Ukraine has dismissed elections that are being held now as "sham".

Data on the Commission's website claimed to show that the initial count of votes indicated support for Russia.

The polls being held across Russia come ahead of presidential elections planned for next year expected to prolong Putin's rule until at least 2030.&nbsp;

Most of his opponents are in exile or in jail. Moscow has criminalised criticising the Ukraine invasion and has already detained thousands of people over this.

Ahead of voting in annexed Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, Russia-appointed authorities set up mobile polling booths. Moscow even claimed that a polling station was attacked by a Ukrainian drone.

Voting was also taking place in Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.&nbsp;

Ukrainian security services said they had compiled a list of "collaborators" helping to organise the voting and vowed retribution.&nbsp;

AFP quoted voters in Rostov-on-Don, a southwest city close to Ukraine's border. The city was attacked by drones this week. They said that they were worried about the conflict.

"We just want to live in peace with our children," said 40-year-old Nina Antonova.&nbsp;

"Everyone is worried about this one problem -- the war. We don't have any other concerns," said 84-year-old Anatoli, a pensioner who declined to give his last name. &nbsp;

<h2>Mayoral vote in Moscow&nbsp;</h2>

Russian capital Moscow is carrying out a mayoral vote. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin is a Kremlin loyalist who has been in the post since 2010. In recent days, he has been getting a lot of publicity on television. He has been seen opening new regional train routes, renovated hospitals, motorways and more.

In the last 13 years, Sobyanin has presided over many mega-projects in Moscow.

He was almost defeated in 2013 by Alexei Navalny, the most prominent face of political opposition in Russia.

Navalny was jailed in 2020 on old fraud charges his allies say were a pretext to end his political work. &nbsp;

Sobyanin is the easy favourite. He is up against the grandson of a veteran Communist politician and a little-known candidate from a new party dubbed "New People".&nbsp;

Russia claims party that backs Putin leading polls in annexed Ukraine regions

Ukraine on Monday (September 11) claimed that its forces have now taken over an oil and gas drilling platform present in the Black Sea, which was under Moscow's control since 2015.

The platform is located roughly half way between the coast of the southwestern Odesa region of Ukraine and the Moscow-annexed Crimean peninsula.

"Ukraine regains control of the so-called 'Vyshki-Boyka' (platform)," said Kyiv's military intelligence, in a statement.

It stated that the drilling platforms were taken into control and added that it was part of a "unique operation."

"During one phase of the operation, a battle took place between Ukrainian special forces on boats and a Russian Su-30 fighter jet," it said, claiming that Moscow's plane was "hit and forced to retreat”.

A video was released in which boats can be seen circulating around the oil and gas platform before its troops started firing into the air.

<h2>More territories&nbsp;regained in counteroffensive</h2>

On Monday, Ukraine also claimed that more territory has been regained on the eastern and southern fronts in its counteroffensive against Russian forces in the past week. 
 
In a televised comment, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said that Kyiv retook nearly 2 square km (0.77 square miles) of land near the eastern city of Bakhmut, which was captured by Russia in May after the fighting continued for months. 
 
Later, she added on the Telegram messaging app that in the past week, 4.8 square km in the southern Tavria sector was also recaptured by the Ukrainian army. 
 
Maliar, in her televised comments, stated that part of the village of Opytne, which is located on the southern side of the eastern city of Avdiivka, has been captured by the Ukrainian forces and added they also had a "partial success" near the village of Novomaiorske in Donetsk's eastern region.

But Moscow condemned the trial, insisting that he was an innocent citizen and his arrest was politically motivated. Germany expelled two Russian diplomats soon after Krasikov's conviction. According to the Wall Street Journal, Russian President Vladimir Putin sought Krasikov's release briefly after his conviction. The organisation on its Instagram page said that the volunteers were helping evacuate the wounded from the front-line areas and were trapped inside the van as it flipped over and caught fire after being struck by shells near the two of Chasiv Yar.&nbsp;

The other two volunteers were identified as German medical volunteer Ruben Mawick and Swedish volunteer Johan Mathias Thyr, who were seriously wounded, according to the organisation.&nbsp;

At the time, they also said that the organisation was unable to find the van’s fourth passenger, Igual. The death of the 32-year-old Spanish citizen, who was also the organisation’s director, was confirmed by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.&nbsp;

“Unfortunately, I can confirm a missile hit a vehicle in which this Spanish worker was travelling who was working for a humanitarian NGO in Ukraine. We have verbal confirmation of her death,” said Albares, during a press conference in New Delhi where he was in the midst of attending the G20 Summit.&nbsp;

<h2>‘A painful, irreparable loss’: Kyiv</h2>

The Ukrainian officials called the deaths of the two volunteers, “a painful, irreparable loss” and said that the aid workers had dedicated themselves to limiting the harm to civilians caught in the conflict. The volunteers also carried out evacuations and distributed humanitarian relief to those affected, said the officials in Kyiv.&nbsp;

According to the aid organisation, the volunteers were on their way to assess the needs of civilians on the outskirts of Bakhmut, the Ukrainian city that witnessed some of the longest and bloodiest battles before it was occupied by Russian forces back in May.&nbsp;

Ukraine blames Russia for deaths of Spanish and Canadian foreign aid workers

Russian Minister Sergei Lavrov, on Sunday (September 10), speaking about the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration adopted in the second session of Day One of the G20 Summit, said that Moscow did not expect the document to be adopted and was ready to defend itself and the wording about the Ukraine war. He also said that it is due to the countries of the global south that Russia managed to ensure the G20 agenda was not overshadowed by the Ukraine conflict.

During a press conference, when asked about the consensus over the New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration, Lavrov said, “When they agreed to that, perhaps it was the voice of their conscience. Speaking frankly, we didn’t expect that. We were 100 per cent ready to defend our honest wording of the text…Let me underline that we cannot isolate that paragraph (on Ukraine and Russia) from the rest of the work on the declaration.”&nbsp;

He added, “The main content of the declaration this year is all about the awakening of the Global South and the consolidation of the Global South that is truly willing for the G20 to work for its main goals.”&nbsp;

When asked about the Black Sea grain deal, the Russian foreign minister said Moscow would rejoin the agreement on the ‘same day’ after its conditions for export of its own grain and fertilisers to global markets are met.&nbsp;

“When all the necessary actions for removing obstacles for our grain and fertiliser exports are implemented, the same day we will return to the collective implementation of the Ukrainian part of the Black Sea initiative,” said Lavrov, during the press conference.&nbsp;

This comes a day after the European Union reprimanded Russia during the G20 summit for pulling out of the Black Sea grain deal, which provided a safe passage for Ukraine to export its grain and called its offer of a million tonnes of grain to African countries a “parody of generosity”.&nbsp;

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, on Saturday, said that Russia is sticking to its demands to rejoin the grain deal and rejected the UN’s proposal that a Luxembourg-based subsidiary of Rosselkhozbank could immediately apply to SWIFT to “effectively enable access” for the bank within 30 days.&nbsp;

He was speaking at a news conference in New Delhi during the G20 Summit. Turkey is widely perceived to posses a political capital with respect to Russia. Turkey even mediated between Ukraine and Russia to strike the Black Sea grain deal and continues to play significant part in developments surrounding it.

"...We believe that any initiative that isolates Russia is bound to fail. Its success is a very little possibility. We believe that any step that may escalate the tensions in the Black Sea should be avoided... In order to support the global food security, food supply security, we are going to bring together the Food Supply Security Study Group, both Russia, Ukraine, as well as the United Nations, and with our stakeholders coming from the international community, we are going to have continuous talks...," said Erdogan as he spoke during the news conference.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, grain exports from Ukraine often called 'bread basket of the world' were halted. This had raised the spectre of a global food crisis until a grain deal was struck between Russia and Ukraine with mediation from Turkey and United Nations. Under the deal, the grain carrying ships were given a safe passage through Black Sea.

The deal collapsed in July this year after Russia pulled out of it.

During the news conference on Sunday, Erdogan also spoke positively about India at United Nations Security Council (UNSC). India has been seeking a permanent membership of the UNSC saying that World War 2-era political realities no longer exist. Erdogan, however, said that there should be rotation at the UNSC so that all countries get a chance.

The Turkish president also offered condolences over the devastating Morocco earthquake. He said Turkey was ready to help Morocco in its hour of need.

"...I wish God’s mercy on our brothers who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to those injured in the strong earthquake that occurred in Morocco. In the name of my country and people, I hope all the people of Morocco gets better soon. As a country that experienced the disaster of the century only six months ago, we are ready to help our Moroccan brothers with all our means," he said.

The agency also released the names of those who were onboard, apart from Prigozhin. The list includes Sergey Propustin, Evgeniy Makaryan, Aleksandr Totmin, and Nikolay Matuseev. Two names stood out — Valeriy Chekalov and Dmitry Utkin. &nbsp;

In a video that was released late last month, Prigozhin could be seen speaking about speculations over his well-being and possible threats to his security. He said that he was in Africa.&nbsp;

In the short video published by the Grey Zone Telegram channel which is linked to his Wagner Group, Prigozhin is seen sharing: "For those who are discussing whether I'm alive or not, how I'm doing - right now it's the weekend, second half of August 2023, I'm in Africa."&nbsp;

"So for people who like to discuss wiping me out, or my private life, how much I earn or whatever else - everything's ok," he added.&nbsp;

While decoding the details of the video, it was found that it was indeed filmed in Africa as his camouflage attire, hat, and the watch on his right hand matched his appearance in a video released on August 21, which he also claimed was filmed in Africa. The reference to "weekend" in the video implied the latest clip must have been made on August 19 or 20, just three or four days before Prigozhin and other top Wagner figures and bodyguards were killed in the crash.&nbsp;

Kremlin has denied any involvement but there have been claims and counterclaims. However, Prigozhin's comments in the video reflect his awareness of the risks to his life.&nbsp;

During the G20 Summit in New Delhi, the European Union reprimanded Russia, on Saturday (September 9) for pulling out of the Black Sea grain deal, which provided a safe passage for Ukraine to export its grain and called its offer of a million tonnes of grain to African countries a “parody of generosity”. Separately, Russia said it was sticking to its conditions to return to the grain deal which it quit back in July.

During the talks in New Delhi, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that the United Nations-Turkey brokered deal, which allowed the delivery of Ukrainian grain to vulnerable countries was 30 times more in volume than what Russia has offered to Africa.&nbsp;

“And what cynicism...you did not accept this,” Michel said in comments directed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who is representing Moscow at the summit.

“Not only have you decided to pull out of this agreement on the Black Sea, but at the same time you are attacking the port infrastructure,” said the European Council president.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, G20 leaders in the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration called for the “full, timely and effective implementation to ensure the immediate and unimpeded deliveries of grain, foodstuffs, and fertilisers/inputs from the Russian Federation and Ukraine.”&nbsp;

Adding that it is “necessary to meet the demand in developing and least developed countries, particularly those in Africa.”&nbsp;

<h2>Russia rejects UN bank proposal</h2>

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, on Saturday, said that Russia is sticking to its demands to rejoin the grain deal and rejected the UN’s proposal that a Luxembourg-based subsidiary of Rosselkhozbank could immediately apply to SWIFT to “effectively enable access” for the bank within 30 days.

“All our conditions are perfectly well known. The statement comes months after Russia backed out of the Black Sea grain deal saying Western sanctions are hindering its grain and fertiliser exports.&nbsp;

While the exports are not directly sanctioned by the West, it is sanctions against port access, insurance, logistics and payments, including the removal of agricultural bank Rosselkhozbank from SWIFT, which Moscow says is affecting its export.&nbsp;

“The agreements say that SWIFT should be open to Rosselkhozbank, and not to its subsidiary. That is, we are talking about the need to return to the basics, to the agreements that were in place originally and which we were promised would be fulfilled,” said Peskov.&nbsp;

Cesar Rodriguez, the official heading the investigation, appeared on national television on Thursday, saying "17 people have been arrested so far." He did not give their nationalities.

Rodriguez said that it was suspected that one person was "organiser of these activities" while two others acted as recruiters.

The office of the attorney general said that the judicial authorities were considering to bring in charges of "human trafficking, mercenarism (and) hostile acts in a foreign state." These charges carry sentences of up to 30 years in jail, lefe imprisonment or even death penalty.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said Monday that the government was "acting with the full force of the law" against trafficking operations.

The father of two young men recruited by this ring appeared on state television &nbsp;saying that one of his sons left Cuba in July while the other is still on the island and is being investigated.

Miami's America TeVe newspaper published last week what it said were testimonies from two teenagers. They said that they were trcked into working with Russian army inside Ukraine on construction sites.

Another Cuban man told the media outlet that he had signed up with Moscow's armed forces hoping to legalize his status in Russia.

Moscow and Havana have boosted ties recently, with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel meeting his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow at the end of last year.

The Cuban government has categorically denied any complicity with Russia in the alleged trafficking.

Cuba: 17 arrested for 'trafficking' people to fight for Russia in Ukraine war

Russia on Wednesday released a statement saying that it will very soon finalise the route of the China-bound Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which is intended to traverse through Mongolia. This huge project is aimed at delivering more natural gas to Beijing.

As per reports, Moscow is making efforts to bolster trade with Asia as its economic ties with the Western countries have withered due to its military offensive in Ukraine.

"The decision for the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline's route is at the final stage," Russia's deputy prime minister and top energy official Alexander Novak said in an interview with the Russian magazine Energy Policy.

The proposed pipeline will run through southern Siberia near the city of Achinsk and turn east towards Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk before reaching the Mongolian border, Novak said.

He said it was "assumed" that the pipeline would pass near the eastern Siberian cities of Achinsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kansk, Sayansk, Angarsk and Irkutsk, then through the Buryatia region south of Lake Baikal, reaching the Mongolian border near the settlement of Naushki.

In the month of March this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during Xi Jinping's visit to Moscow, said that "all agreements" between the two countries had been made for the pipeline.

Earlier this week, as per Russian news agency Interfax, Putin termed Xi Jinping a 'friend' and said he will meet him soon, following reports that the Kremlin leader was planning to visit Beijing in the month of October.

"Quite soon we will have events, and there will be a meeting with the president of the People’s Republic of China," said Putin, according to Interfax.&nbsp;

"He (Xi) calls me his friend, and I am happy to call him my friend because he is a person who does a lot for the development of Russian-Chinese relations."&nbsp;

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said in July that Putin planned to visit China for the Belt and Road Forum in October, while Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said that China had invited the Russian leader as the "main guest" at the event.&nbsp;

Russia says it will soon finalise route for Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline to China

Russia and Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday (September 5), said that they would extend the voluntary oil cuts until the end of this year. This has sent the price of Brent crude to a 10-month high, months after Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest crude exporter, first announced the cuts as well as sparked worries among investors about potential shortages during peak winter demand.

<h2>Saudi Arabia announces oil export cuts</h2>

The announcement was made by Saudi Arabia’s energy ministry which said that they are extending the oil production cut to one million barrels per day, which first took effect in July, for “another three months until the end of December 2023.”&nbsp;

This comes after the oil production cuts were first announced after a June meeting of the 23-nation OPEC+ alliance, which also includes Russia. This recent announcement also comes after a statement in early August said that the cut would last through September and possibly “deepened”, but that was not the case on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Russia also said that it would extend its oil export cuts of 300,000 barrels per day until the end of 2023 to “maintain stability” on markets, as per AFP.&nbsp;

Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announcing the extension said that they would also review the cuts monthly and take a call on whether to deepen them or whether production should be increased “depending on the global market situation.”&nbsp;

<h2>Announcement affects markets</h2>

Brent crude futures rose by $1.04 or 1.2 per cent and settled at $90.04 a barrel, closing above the $90 mark for the first time since November 2022, according to Reuters.&nbsp;

While investors had expected Russia and Saudi Arabia to extend the voluntary cuts into October, a three-month extension came as a shock.

“These bullish moves significantly tighten the global oil market and can only result in one thing: higher oil prices worldwide,” said Jorge Leon, senior vice president at Rystad Energy, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

Saudi Arabia announces oil export cuts The announcement was made by Saudi Arabia’s energy ministry which said that they are extending the oil production cut to one million barrels per day, which first took effect in July, for “another three months until the end of December 2023.” This comes after the oil production cuts were first announced after a June meeting of the 23-nation OPEC+ alliance, which also includes Russia. This recent announcement also comes after a statement in early August said that the cut would last through September and possibly “deepened”, but that was not the case on Tuesday. Russia also said that it would extend its oil export cuts of 300,000 barrels per day until the end of 2023 to “maintain stability” on markets, as per AFP. As per reports, sanctions-hit Russia has been hoping to get more military supplies from its ally to strengthen its forces as a highly scrutinised counteroffensive was pushed by Kyiv to take back its territory.

"This is not going to reflect well on North Korea and they will pay a price for this in the international community," he stated. Sullivan said that it "says a lot that Russia is having to turn to a country like North Korea."

In July, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea seeking to acquire additional munitions for the ongoing war, said the White House. 
 
The Kremlin on Tuesday said that it has not been able to confirm a summit between Kim and Putin. "We have nothing to say on this," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

North Korea will pay 'price' for supplying arms to Russia: US

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday (September 5) said that new attacks were carried out "very, very close" to its border by neighbouring Ukraine, as Russia has been repeatedly launching drone strikes on infrastructure in Danube, southern Ukraine. 
 
"We had attacks just today, the minister of defence told me, which were verified at 800 metres (2,600 feet) from our border. So very, very close," said Iohannis, while speaking in a joint press conference with Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel. 
 
The NATO member on Monday had refuted Kyiv's claims that Iranian-made Russian drones dropped and detonated inside the Romanian territory amid a strike carried out on the Ukrainian port of Izmail. 
 
"There was no piece, and no drone and no other part of any device that made it to Romania," said Iohannis at the press conference on Tuesday (September 5), echoing the defence ministry's comments on Monday. 
 
"But yes, we are concerned because these attacks are taking place within a very short distance from the Romanian border," Iohannis stated while addressing from the Cincu military base located in central Romania.

Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu on Monday (September 4) denied reports of Romanian territory being hit by Russian drones during an overnight air strike carried out on a Ukrainian port across the Danube River.

"Of course, there is a risk because what happened there is very close to our borders," said Minister Odobescu, while speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of a visit to Berlin.

Romania claims fresh Ukraine attacks 'very close' to border

Russia has covered their combat aircraft with car tyres in a bid to blunt any possible Ukrainian drone attacks in their military fields, a move that has been described as ‘bizarre’ and ‘unusual’.

The development was confirmed by CNN which cited satellite images taken by Maxar Technologies purportedly showing two Tu-95 strategic bombers with car tires on top of the airframes at the Engels Airbase, deep inside Russia.

Engels is one of Russia’s crucial airbases, serving as the home base for the 121st and 184th Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiments. It is reportedly responsible for operating the Russian Aerospace Forces’ Tu-160M Blackjack and Tu-95M Bear strategic bombers, respectively.

It is believed that increased drone and missile attacks by Ukraine forced Russia to this unusual approach.

On December 5, 2022, the base faced an attack in the early hours, in which two Tu-95s were damaged. On December 26, 2022, another attack on the Engels airbase claimed the lives of three Russian Armed Forces officers.

<h2>Crude attempt to deter attacks</h2>

Experts argue that this is just a crude attempt at not only adding an extra layer of protection but also to reduce the visibility of the aircraft at night.

“It may reduce the thermal signature for exposed strategic aviation assets placed on airfield aprons, but they will still be observable under infrared cameras,” Francisco Serra-Martins of drone manufacturer One Way Aerospace told CNN.

The Ukrainian forces have been using drones manufactured by One Way Aerospace.

Echoing similar sentiments, another expert argued that it may have little to no impact.

“While it seems pretty goofy, they seem to be trying to do the best they can to up-armour the planes that are otherwise sitting ducks. Whether it works depends on what the warhead is on the missile/drone,” Steffan Watkins, an open-source research consultant who tracks aircraft and ships, told CNN.

A NATO military official, on the condition of anonymity, confirmed to CNN that the alliance was aware of this use of tyres.

“We believe it’s meant to protect against drones,” the official told CNN. “We don’t know if this will have any effect.”

Notably, this is not the first time that Russia resorted to such an unconventional method to safeguard its military assets against Ukrainian attacks.

In one instance, the Russian Navy applied paint&nbsp;to the front and rear sections of its Admiral Grigorovich-class frigates due to the persistent maritime drone attacks on these warships while anchored in the harbour in the Black Sea.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will be travelling to Russia this month where he will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the need to provide weapons for the ongoing war against Ukraine, reported the New York Times on Monday (September 4), citing US and allied sources.

The planned trip will take place as Russia and North Korea have been discussing holding joint military exercises after Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea during which he tried to convince Pyongyang to let Russia purchase artillery ammunition.

The White House on Monday (September 4) stated that Kim Jong Un is expected to hold a "leader-level diplomatic engagement" with President Putin in Russia.

Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, the defence ministry's intelligence wing, revealed the identity of the pilot as 28-year-old Maxim Kuzminov, who was earlier part of the "319th separate helicopter regiment" which was based in the Far Eastern Primorye region of Russia. 
 
In a statement, the Main Intelligence Directorate talked about how the operation was led in "maximum secrecy", by first carrying out the pilot's recruitment after identifying that he did not support the invasion by the Kremlin. 
 
The department claimed that they assisted the pilot in flying into Ukraine and that two of the crew members of the helicopter, who were unaware of the plans of Kuzminov to go to Ukraine and defect - were killed after they refused to surrender.

Nastassia Nasko (25) from Belarus and her friend Anastasia Kuchmenko (28) wanted to help Ukrainian war effort. Nastassia has a background in IT and marketing while Anastasia is an art graduate. But their effort to raise support was not going beyond likes and reposts and so on.

"When the full-scale invasion started, we were in Warsaw and it was difficult for us to accept the fact that we were not in Ukraine and could not help or volunteer, and we did not have a lot of money to send to the Ukrainian defenders,” she told Euronews.

As reported by Euronews, they realised that they could utilise the Western, stereotypical and almost pervasive fascination for Ukrainian women to raise support for Ukrainian war effort.

The women launched TerOnlyFans which is a short for "Territorial Defence OnlyFans". The platform now co-operates with several Ukrainian charities and send tasteful nudes to people who donate and present proof of donation.

“It was important for us to launch TerOnlyFans on 8 March because we wanted to highlight that the project aims to promote a woman’s right to independently decide to do whatever they want with their bodies,” said Nasko.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (September 3) announced that he was replacing Kyiv's defence minister Oleksiy Reznikov, terming the move as a 'new approach' in the ministry.

"Oleksiy Reznikov has been through more than 550 days of full-scale war," Zelensky said in his daily evening address. "I believe that the ministry needs new approaches and other formats of interaction with both the military and society at large."

He nominated Rustem Umerov, a Crimean Tatar who has been head of the State Property Fund since last year, to replace Reznikov.&nbsp;

"Now Rustem Umerov should be the head of the (defence) ministry," Zelensky said in his evening address. "I expect parliament to support this candidate."

The announcement, made by Zelensky in his nightly video address to the nation, sets the stage for the biggest shakeup in Ukraine's defence establishment during the war launched by Russia in February 2022.

Reznikov, who was named defence minister in November 2021, has helped secure billions of dollars of Western military aid to help the war effort but has been shadowed by graft accusations surrounding his ministry.

The change of defence minister must be approved by parliament but is most likely to be supported by a majority of lawmakers in Verkhovna Rada. Zelensky said he expected parliament to approve Umerov's appointment.

Ukrainian President Zelensky sacks wartime defence minister Reznikov, nominates Rustem Umerov

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan termed his country's policy of solely depending on Russia for security a 'strategic mistake', saying that Moscow failed to deliver its promise and is in the process of wrapping up its role in the wider region.

During an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica published on Sunday (September 3), Pashinyan accused Russia of not ensuring Armenia's security in the face of what he said was aggression from neighbouring Azerbaijan over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region.

He then suggested that Moscow, which has a defence agreement with Armenia and a military base there, did not consider his country as adequately pro-Russian and said that he believed Russia was in the process of leaving the more expansive South Caucasus region.

"Armenia's security architecture was 99.999% linked to Russia, including when it came to the procurement of arms and ammunition," Pashinyan told La Repubblica.

"But today we see that Russia itself is in need of weapons, arms and ammunition (for the war in Ukraine) and in this situation, it's understandable that even if it wishes so, the Russian Federation cannot meet Armenia's security needs.

"This example should demonstrate to us that dependence on just one partner in security matters is a strategic mistake."

His remarks in the interview highlighted Armenia's resentment towards Russia's inability to deliver guaranteed security.

As per Reuters reports, there was no immediate response from Moscow after Pashinyan's interview.

In July this year, Azerbaijan made claims that Russia and Armenia were not fulfilling the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave ceasefire deal.&nbsp;

In a statement, Azerbaijan's foreign ministry said, "Armenia has not fulfilled many provisions of the statement, and Russia has not ensured the full implementation of the statement within its obligations." The remark comes hours after the European Union (EU) urged Azerbaijan and Armenia to refrain from "violence and harsh rhetoric".

Following heavy fighting and a ceasefire brokered by Russia, Azerbaijan in 2020 took over areas that had been controlled by ethnic Armenians in and around the mountain enclave.

The two countries have been discussing a peace deal in which Russia is also pushing to retain a leading role.&nbsp;

The upcoming drills will begin on September 9 and involve troops from all NATO countries on the Baltic Sea, plus soon-to-be member Sweden and non-Baltic allies which include the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.&nbsp;

During the two-week Northern Coasts exercise, the countries will practise amphibious operations and strikes from sea to land, reported Reuters. “We are sending a clear message of vigilance to Russia: Not on our watch,” Vice-Admiral Jan Christian Kaack told reporters in Berlin.&nbsp;

He added, “Credible deterrence must include the ability to attack.” The exercise will also focus on securing the sea routes through the Baltic Sea and will take place off the coasts of Latvia and Estonia.&nbsp;

“Finland and the Baltic states depend to almost 100% on the maritime supply routes through the Baltic Sea,” Kaack noted. He added, “Should the Suwalki Gap be blocked - and this can be done easily as there are only two roads and one railroad line - then we are left with the sea routes only, and that’s where we will then have to make our way through.”

The Suwalki Gap is a 65-kilometre narrow land corridor and the only connection between the Baltic states to Poland and NATO’s main territory in Europe.&nbsp;

Kaack also noted that the upcoming exercise will be the first exercise of this size that the German navy, which is also the biggest navy on the Baltic Sea, will command from its new maritime headquarters in Rostock.&nbsp;

The maritime base recently reached operational readiness and aims to act as a regional maritime headquarters for NATO capable of leading the alliance’s operations in the Baltic Sea in case of a conflict, said the German official.&nbsp;

Oleksandr Kubrakov said Liberia-flagged Anna-Theresa and Marshall Islands-flagged Ocean Courtesy bulk carriers had left the port of Pivdennyi from the “humanitarian corridor” hugging the western Black Sea coast near Romania and Bulgaria.

The Anna-Theresa, according to the Ukrainian official, had been stuck in the Ukrainian port since February 22, 2022, and the Ocean Courtesy from February 16 of the same year.&nbsp;

The Anna-Theresa and Ocean Courtesy were carrying 56,000 metric tons of pig iron and 172,000 tons of iron ore concentrate, respectively, said Kubrakov, on social media.&nbsp;

G20 summit in Delhi: Trends show gaps in leaders’ attendance each year

Russian President Vladimir Putin has termed his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping a 'friend' and said he will meet him soon, following reports that the Kremlin leader was planning to visit Beijing in October.&nbsp;

"Quite soon we will have events, and there will be a meeting with the president of the People’s Republic of China," said Putin, according to Russian news agency Interfax.&nbsp;

"He (Xi) calls me his friend, and I am happy to call him my friend, because he is a person who does a lot for the development of Russian-Chinese relations."

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said in July that Putin planned to visit China for the Belt and Road Forum in October, while Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said that China had invited the Russian leader as the "main guest" at the event.&nbsp;

<h2>Putin evading ICC arrest warrant?</h2>

Notably, ever since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Putin in March, on suspicion&nbsp;of war crimes in Ukraine, the Russian leader has rarely travelled abroad.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, Putin announced that he was not travelling to India to attend the G20 summit in person. The Russian leader held a telephonic conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and cited his 'busy schedule' for giving the all-important summit a miss.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Russia threatens to block G20 declaration</h2>

Lavrov, who is also due to represent Russia at the upcoming meeting of the Group of 20 countries in New Delhi on September 9-10, said that Russia will block the final declaration of the summit unless it reflects their position on Ukraine and other crises.&nbsp;

The move will force participants to issue a non-binding or partial communique.&nbsp;

“There will be no general declaration on behalf of all members if our position is not reflected,” said Lavrov, on Friday. Moscow has justified its “special military operation” in Ukraine which began in February 2022, as an existential battle with the West which Russian President Vladimir Putin says wants to dismantle Russia and take control of its vast natural resources.

The Russian FM also said that the West had raised the Ukraine issue in meetings ahead of the summit to which Moscow responded by saying that “the issue is closed for us” and accused the West of undermining international institutions by pushing its own agenda.&nbsp;

Lavrov also suggested that if a consensus could not be reached at the G20 meeting, a non-binding communique could be issued by the G20 presidency. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pm-modi-again-says-not-an-era-of-war-different-platform-but-same-plea-to-end-bloodshed-human-suffering-607589">India</a>, which holds the G20 presidency, has called for peace in Ukraine.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia to allocate 1.9 trillion roubles for annexed Ukrainian territories</h2>

The Russian president said that they have planned to allocate 1.9 trillion roubles ($20 billion) from the country’s federal budget over the next two-and-a-half years to the development of four Ukrainian regions annexed which Moscow claimed as a part of its territory.&nbsp;

Notably, Russia reportedly occupies only parts of the regions it claimed and the unilateral annexation has been recognised by only a handful of countries allied with Russia while the move has largely been condemned by Ukraine and its Western allies as well as three-quarters of UN member states.&nbsp;

Lavrov also suggested that if a consensus could not be reached at the G20 meeting, a non-binding communique could be issued by the G20 presidency. India, which holds the G20 presidency, has called for peace in Ukraine. “Another option is to adopt a document that focuses on specific decisions in the sphere of G20 competencies, and let everyone say the rest on their own behalf,” said Lavrov. Kyiv police, on Friday (September 1), reported bomb threats to the schools in the Ukrainian capital as children returned to schools for their second academic year since Russia's aggression.

Kyiv's police said its forces were reviewing educational buildings.

"We have received information about explosives in Kyiv's schools," news agency AFP quoted police spokeswoman Yulia Girdvilis as saying.

"All educational institutions are being checked by Kyiv police forces with the involvement of the State Emergency Service," she said.

The police also said that they would be collectively making a decision with the schools if any evacuations were to be made, further calling on the people to "stay calm."

Ukraine's education ministry in a statement said that nearly four million students are returning to learning, both virtually and in the classroom.

As per the authorities, big cities and towns across Ukraine are regularly subjected to artillery, drone and missile attacks and thousands of schools have been damaged or destroyed.

"And our educators, teachers and lecturers will teach. Because knowledge and culture are what distinguish us from the enemy."

Andriy Sadovy, the mayor of the western city of Lviv, while releasing a picture of students behind computers, said that pupils will be taught to fly drones.

"This is our new reality," he said on social media.

Kyiv launched its long-anticipated counteroffensive in June but has acknowledged tough battles as it struggles to break through heavily fortified Russian positions.

Police report bomb threats in Kyiv as Ukraine children go back to school

Ukraine's military intelligence chief, on Friday (September 1), said that the recent drone attack on an airport in Russia, that damaged several military transport planes, was carried out from within Russian territory.

"The drones used to attack the 'Kresty' air base in Pskov were launched from Russia," Kyrylo Budanov wrote on social media Friday.

"Four Russian IL-76 military transport planes were hit as a result of the attack. Two were destroyed and two were seriously damaged," he added.

Budanov said that the defence ministry had been using the aircraft to transport troops and cargo.

The Kremlin released a statement earlier this week saying that the military experts were working to find out which routes drones are taking in order "to prevent such situations in the future".&nbsp;

"The defence ministry is repelling a drone attack in Pskov's airport," regional governor Mikhail Vedernikov had said, taking to social media and sharing a video of massive fire with the sounds of sirens and explosions in the background.

Budanov's comments came hours after Russian air defences destroyed a drone progressing towards Moscow, said the city's mayor, a day after a similar attack on the capital.&nbsp;

Russian officials on Thursday (August 31) said that fresh Ukrainian attacks were thwarted by them after Ukrainian drones targeted at least six regions.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had earlier said that Russia was trying to find the place from where the drones were launched so that further strikes could be prevented. President Vladimir Putin was immediately informed in the case as per protocols in such cases of "massive attacks", Peskov said.

In a statement, the government of Kyiv confirmed that the Russian planes were destroyed in Pskov. "Yes, four IL-76 transport planes were destroyed in Pskov at an airfield, they are beyond repair. Turkey's foreign minister said on Thursday (August 31) that reviving Ukrainian grain deal was 'critical' for food security. Hakan Fidan, Turkish Foreign Minister was in Moscow.

Fidan was in Moscow for preparations for an informal summit between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Turkey had helped broker the pre-existing grain deal between Ukraine and Russia that created safe passage for Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. Russia pulled out of the deal last month.

Since then, both Russia and Ukraine have planned to begin shipping grain outside the framework of the deal.

Turkey underlines 'critical' need to revive Ukraine grain deal

Russia on Wednesday (August 30) vetoed the United Nations Security Council resolution, which was drafted by France and UAE, on the sanctions against Mali.

Thirteen out of the UN Security Council's 15 members were in favour of the proposal that would have extended the UN sanctions and independent monitoring for another year.

However, Russia exercised its veto power to block the proposal which was led by Mali's former colonial power France and the United Arab Emirates, whereas China abstained from casting a vote.

Russia's ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, underlined that the sanctions were first put in place in the year 2017 in order to back a peace agreement in the long-troubled Sahel country.

"It is fundamentally important that UN Security Council sanctions deal purely with that issue and not be used as a means of foreign influence on Mali, and that is something that the panel of experts of the Security Council has been involved in," he said.

Western powers condemned Russia for redressing after the panel spoke precariously about actions by Malian forces and their "foreign security partners", a clear reference to Wagner.

Earlier this month, a report submitted to the Security Council said that the violence against women "allegedly committed by the Malian Armed Forces and their foreign and local allies is systematic and organised."

Sanctions without experts to monitor them would make the entire effort "ineffective," US envoy Robert Wood said.

"Russia seeks to eliminate the panel of experts' mandate to stifle publication of uncomfortable truths about Wagner's actions in Mali which require attention," Wood said.

The United Kingdom deeply regretted the "reckless use" of the veto against the renewal of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions against Mali.&nbsp;

UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, James Kariuki, at the UNSC meeting on Mali held on Wednesday, said, “The United Kingdom cannot support Russia’s proposal to dissolve the Panel of Experts on Mali, nor its attempt to predetermine the termination of sanctions measures.”

He said that despite difficult compromises, the UK opted to vote in favour of the resolution because of its substantial support for the renewal of the Mali sanctions regime and Panel of Experts mandate. Kariuki termed these as “important tools in support of peace and stability in Mali”.

“For this reason, the UK deeply regrets Russia’s reckless use of the veto. This will reduce the Council’s oversight and engagement on Mali’s peace process at a critical juncture,” he added.

On Wednesday (August 30), the government of Joe Biden said that they have been concerned about the two pariah states which are in the middle of arms negotiations and that after the trip of Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to North Korea last month, Russia's second delegation of officials visited Pyongyang to further discuss a potential deal. 
 
Along with the second delegation, letters were exchanged between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong, in which the two leaders are “pledging to increase their bilateral cooperation,” as reported by National Security Council strategic communications co-ordinator John Kirby.

“We remain concerned that the DPRK continues to consider providing military support to Russia’s military forces in Ukraine and we have new information which we are able to share today that arms negotiations between Russia and the DPRK are actively advancing,” Kirby stated. “Following these negotiations, high-level discussion may continue in coming months,” he added. 
 
“Under these potential deals, Russia would receive significant quantities and multiple types of munitions from the DPRK, which the Russian military plans to use in Ukraine. These potential deals could also include the provision of raw materials that would assist Russia’s defence industrial base,” Kirby stated, further promising that the US will take direct action for sanctioning any entities that are involved in a potential deal and appealed Pyongyang to cease the negotiations.

<h2>Letters exchanged were more at the surface level</h2>

He stated that the letters were “more at the surface level” but that North Korean and Russian weapons sales were advancing. The letters were exchanged by the leaders following the visit of Shoigu, he stated.

“Following Shoigu’s visit another group of Russian officials travelled to Pyongyang for follow-on discussions about potential arms deals between the DPRK and Russia,” said Kirby. 
 
Earlier this month, a sanctions evasion network was sanctioned by the US Treasury which is aimed at supporting arms deals between Russia and North Korea. Kirby added that attempts were being made by Russia to source weapons from countries like North Korea and Iran which clearly showed the distress of Moscow. 
 
“There is no other way to look at that than desperation and weakness, quite frankly,” Kirby stated.
