Although it is exorbitantly expensive and constrained by visa and airline restrictions, the wealthy continue to manage it and those on low incomes couldn’t afford it to begin with.

Russia being one of the largest oil exporters in the world is now under pressure to devalue its currency because of Western sanctions that are reducing the amount of money it makes from exporting oil. As a result, the country’s trade surplus with the rest of the globe is decreasing. Additionally, Russian consumers and businesses are purchasing more imported goods.

The rouble is usually supported when export revenues exceed import expenses. While the rouble has progressively fallen due to the shrinking trade surplus, Moscow has gained because a lower exchange rate actually makes it easier for the government to pay its expenditures.

This is due to the fact that the dollars made from the sale of oil may be converted into more rubles, which can then be used to fund government operations, employee wages, and pensions.

However, the Russian ruble fell to its lowest on August 14, below 100 rubles to the dollar. In order to reduce local demand for imports, the central bank implemented a significant emergency interest rate increase of 3.5 percentage points. After the rate hike, the currency increased to 92 to the dollar, but it has since slowly declined; on Wednesday, it was trading at 96 to the dollar.

Even while the currency rate is lower than it was at 60 rubles to the dollar last year, an economic crisis may not arise if a freefall can be prevented.

Following the 2014 capture of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, the Kremlin has worked to protect the economy from sanctions. By forbidding imports from the European Union, it also forced manufacturers to obtain parts locally and has moved food production to local businesses.

The government has strong reserves and little debt as a result of oil revenue, while sanctions have blocked nearly half of those reserves.

But in the long run, Robin Brooks, chief economist at the Institute of International Finance, warned that Putin’s military spending and sanctions are putting Russia's economy under “slow burn” strain.

Not all is lost for Russia&nbsp;

Despite extensive sanctions related to the Ukraine conflict and the departure of hundreds of well-known Western enterprises, life in Moscow appears to be going on as usual.

On first glance, malls don’t appear to have altered, but consumers now find new apparel companies like Maag and Vilet where Zara and H&amp;M once had their stores.&nbsp;Additionally, the Krispy Kreme that once had its outlet in the Evropeyskaya Mall could be confused for the doughnut vendor Krunchy Dream as the branding is identical. Banks offer stickers with a chip that allows mobile payment as Apple Pay is no longer operational in the country.

Reports say that economic indicators are within normal bounds. Economic growth has exceeded expectations, unemployment is low, and inflation, which was 4 per cent in July according to Russian standards, is high for those with low incomes.

As more items pass through neighbouring nations like Kazakhstan and Armenia to evade sanctions, imports into Russia are on the rise. Money is being given to people and businesses through government spending on the military and social programs, some of which is being spent on imported goods.

Salaries are also being supported by labour shortages brought on by emigration, while government-backed mortgages encourage real estate transactions.

Russia’s earning from oil stays low as war expenses mount: Report  

Russia has informed Brazil's aircraft investigation authority that it will not probe the crash of the Brazilian-made Embraer jet that killed mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin under international rules "at the moment", the Brazilian agency told Reuters on Tuesday.

Prigozhin, two top lieutenants of his Wagner Group and four bodyguards were among 10 people who died when the Embraer Legacy 600 crashed north of Moscow last week.

He died two months to the day after staging a brief mutiny against the Russian defense establishment that posed the biggest challenge to President Vladimir Putin's rule since he rose to power in 1999.

Brazil's Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA), in the interests of improving aviation safety, had said it would join a Russian-led investigation if it were invited and the probe held under international rules.

Russia’s aviation authority was not obligated to say yes to CENIPA, but some former investigators said it should, as the U.S. and other Western governments suspect the Kremlin of being behind the Aug. 23 crash of the Embraer Legacy 600, which has a good safety record.

The Kremlin denies any involvement.

According to the Montreal-based United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the flight from Moscow with a destination of St Petersburg was domestic, so it is not subject to international rules known throughout the industry by their legal name "Annex 13."

"They are not obliged, only recommended to do that," CENIPA head Air Brigadier Marcelo Moreno told Reuters after the agency sent an email asking Russia whether it would open such a probe.

"But if they say they’ll open the investigation and invite Brazil we will participate from afar."

Prigozhin was publicly critical of Moscow's prosecution of its invasion of Ukraine. The Wagner mercenaries fought battles there on Russia's side.

This comes after the company was criticised for continuing sales in Russia more than a year after its invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

The world’s second-largest brewer had first announced its intention to leave Moscow in March 2022, a month after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and recently also acknowledged that the process took longer than expected.&nbsp;

In a statement, Heineken CEO Dolf van den Brink said, “Recent developments demonstrate the significant challenges faced by large manufacturing companies in exiting Russia.”&nbsp;

He added, “While it took much longer than we had hoped, this transaction secures the livelihoods of our employees and allows us to exit the country in a responsible manner.”&nbsp;

Heineken is expected to incur a total loss of $323 million (300 million euros) from the deal and&nbsp;selling its operations to the Arnest Group, the largest Russian manufacturer of cosmetics, household goods and metal packaging for one euro ($1).&nbsp;

However, the Dutch brewer has said that the transaction would have a negligible impact on its full-year outlook.

As the multinational companies flocked to leave Russia after the West imposed unprecedented sanctions on Moscow amid its war with Ukraine, the Kremlin has retaliated by seizing some assets from these businesses.&nbsp;

This comes a month after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree, last month, to take control of French yoghurt maker Danone’s Russian subsidiary along with beer company Carlsberg’s stake in a local brewer, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Van den Brink told reporters that while he would not like to go into the details about why the search for a buyer took longer than expected and called the process “highly complex”.&nbsp;

He added, “We are happy we found a suitable buyer. We believe it is a reliable party...We are happy this process comes to an end and to be able to leave Russia.”

Meanwhile, Arnest Group has provided all 1,800 of Heineken’s employees across seven breweries in Russia with employment guarantees for the next three years as part of the deal.&nbsp;

The Dutch beer maker also said that it removed its Heineken brand from Russia last year while its production of Amstel is to be phased out within six months, adding no other international brands would be licensed in Russia.

“We have now completed our exit from Russia,” said van den Brink. He also said that the deal also has no option to buy the business back.&nbsp;

“According to the preliminary information of the medical staff, two people died in Podoly village as a result of the shelling, another one was wounded,” said Kharkiv governor Oleg Synegubov, on social media. He added, “The enemy hit a civilian target – a cafe, where local residents were spending the day.”&nbsp;

<h2>Six injured in Russia after Ukrainian shelling&nbsp;</h2>

In the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that at least six people were injured after the attack in the village, Urazovo and accused Kyiv of firing “cluster munitions”. According to the Russian official, some residential buildings had been damaged.

“As a result of the cluster munition strike, 6 civilians sustained shrapnel wounds,” said Gladkov, in an update after initially reporting four people had been injured. He added, “One victim is in extremely serious condition.”&nbsp;

<h2>Russia claims to have downed two drones</h2>

Russia said that its air defences shot down one drone approaching the capital and another drone near the village of Kupino, in the Belgorod region. Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the drone was downed by the air defence systems over the Istra district which is some 50 kilometres west from the Kremlin.&nbsp;

“Tonight, air defence forces destroyed a drone on approach to Moscow in the Istrinskii district,” said Sobyanin. He added, “Preliminarily, there were no casualties or damage. Emergency services are working on the site.”&nbsp;

The reported attack forced the suspension of flights in three major airports – Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo – in Moscow, reported TASS.&nbsp;

The second drone, as per Gladkov, was shot down near Kupino. There were immediate reports of damage or casualties in the region due to the drone attack.&nbsp;

Russian intel agencies undertaking long-term influence operations in US: Report

Russia on Friday (August 25) said that Ukraine used 42 drones overnight to attack Russia-annexed Crimea, however, all its attempts were thwarted by Moscow's forces. 
 
"Nine UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were destroyed... over the territory of the Republic of Crimea. 33 UAVs were suppressed by electronic warfare and crashed without reaching the target," wrote Russia's defence ministry on Telegram. 
 
The ministry did not specify whether they suffered any damage or had any casualties.

<h2>Missile attack in Kaluga</h2>

Earlier, Russia claimed that a missile attack carried out by Ukraine in the Kaluga region, which is southwest of Moscow, was thwarted by its air defences and many drones were also destroyed near Crimea, as no damage or casualties were reported.

A missile sent by Kyiv "was detected and destroyed by air defence systems over the territory of Kaluga region," said Moscow's defence ministry, in a statement. 
 
Kaluga is near Moscow which has been facing drone attacks almost on a daily basis, as per the Russian authorities. 
 
On Friday (August 25), the TASS news agency said that the authorities had closed the airspace above Moscow's Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports, citing aviation services and without specifically explaining why. 
 
"Several UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were destroyed over the sea in the area of Cape Khersones" in Crimea, wrote Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-installed governor of Sevastopol on Telegram. 
 
The Cape is towards the southwest of the Crimea peninsula, close to Sevastopol, where the Black Sea fleet of Russia is present.

However, before soaring the heights, he spent almost 13 years in prison after getting implicated in various robbery cases in the early 1980s. He was released in 1990 when the Soviet Union was on the verge of collapse. 
 
Once out of prison, Prigozhin started his business of selling hot dogs in St. Petersburg. As per the Guardian, in no time, Prigozhin had his hands in various ventures, from supermarkets to restaurants. 
 
In 1995, he finally set up a network of catering companies and restaurants, which included St. Petersburg's well-known company called Concord Catering. Soon after, Prigozhin entered the list of one of the country's wealthiest individuals. 
 
With the growing business, Prigozhin’s proximity with the Russian ruling class also increased. Prigozhin became the caterer of choice for the rich and powerful in Russia by the time Vladimir Putin came to power. 
 
Prigozhin became the one who provided catering when Putin hosted some important world leaders like Prince Charles and George Bush. The caterer and the Russian leader soon developed a friendship that changed the shape of world politics, before they turned into foes briefly that is being viewed as a cause of his end.

It remained unclear who decided to form the Wagner Group – Putin or Prigozhin. However, the group was formed during Russia's invasion of Crimea in 2014. Wagner Group and Russia's armed forces co-ordinated with each other but maintained their distance as recently as 2022. 
 
Even as private armies remained officially banned in Russia, Wagner Group troops operated with impunity during Crimea's 2014 invasion. After Crimea was captured, Wagner’s private military contractors (PMCs) went to Donbas in Eastern Ukraine and assisted pro-Russian separatist forces of the self-declared Luhansk and Donetsk from 2014 to 2015. 
 
In no time, Wagner became Putin's proxy army, getting their hands dirty in regions where Russia wanted to step in but officially could not. Prigozhin led this proxy army as a general. 
 
In 2015, Prigozhin sent his Wagner troops to Syria when Russia intervened militarily in the country to support Bashar al-Assad amid the civil war. Wagner chief also got food and supplies. In Syria, Wagner saw itself engaged in some of the most intense fighting and for the first time faced accusations of war crime. 
 
Slowly, Wagner Group was involved in every other conflict where Russia played a role, from civil wars in Libya and Sudan to Venezuela.

<h2>Invasion of Ukraine and Prigozhin's fallout with Putin</h2>

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the involvement of Prigozhin and his Wagner Group in the escalation was out in the open. Prigozhin also became an active recruiter and recruited convicts to fight the war. The group saw a sudden expansion with a surge of convict fighters. The group engaged in some of the heaviest fighting of the conflict and faced massive casualties. 
 
Wagner Group achieved success in May when it seized Bakhmut, an eastern Ukrainian city, at the end of some of the most brutal fighting. After the city was captured, Prigozhin called out the alleged treachery of top military brass, targetting Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov. 
 
He continued criticising the military leadership of Russia for failing to care about his troops and using his&nbsp;fighters as cannon fodder. The brewing tensions soon resulted in the armed mutiny of the Wagner group on June 24. However, before his men could reach Moscow, Prigozhin asked them to stop as Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko announced that he had negotiated a deal with Prigozhin. The Kremlin then announced that Prigozhin would shift to Belarus and won’t face prosecution.

As per analysts, Wagner Group is not likely to go through much changes in countries where it was operating through an official agreement with Moscow. CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadera's political adviser Fidele Gouandjika said that since Wagner troops were present in the country through a state-level agreement with Russia, "nothing will affect the presence of these instructors". Prigozhin is "a dead leader, we can replace him," Gouandjika added.

The evolving geopolitical landscape has renewed interest in BRICS as nations in the Global South explore alternatives in a multipolar world. Given the substantial African representation, this summit provides India with an opportunity to enhance ties and explore future collaboration areas with African countries.

Interestingly, India, holding the G20 chair, has proposed the inclusion of 55 African member countries bloc, the African Union, within the G20. This proposition has garnered support from countries such as the US, UK, France, and Russia. An official announcement is expected during the upcoming G20 summit in Delhi on September 9-10. &nbsp;

PM Modi heads to South Africa this week for BRICS Summit, Africa engagement

Russia and Ukraine continue to be involved in ceaseless drone attacks. Kremlin on Wednesday (August 23) said it had thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack in the capital city of Moscow but three people were killed in another strike in Russia near the Ukrainian&nbsp;border.&nbsp;

Belgorod&nbsp;Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov took to social media to inform about the drone strike.&nbsp;

"Three civilians have been killed.&nbsp;The Ukrainian forces launched an explosive device through a drone when people were on the street," said&nbsp;Gladkov, who added the drone hit a&nbsp;sanatorium in a village.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the defence ministry claimed that its air defence forces had gunned down two drones hovering over Mozhaisky and Khimki districts in Moscow. A third appeared to be jammed and out of control as it smashed into a&nbsp;&nbsp;high-rise building under construction in a Moscow business district. The same district was hit on two occasions in three days, at the beginning of the month.

Kyiv rarely takes responsibility for the drone attacks and it had not commented on the Russian claims till the last update. While both sides have engaged in a numerous drone attacks since the war first broke out in February last year, the intensity has increased in recent months.

Experts say that the cancellation of the Black Sea grain deal by Moscow may have added more bitterness to both sides. Since the cancellation, Moscow has been hitting Ukrainian port cities while Kyiv targets Moscow and border areas using drones.

This is not the first instance when Russia has accused Ukraine of targetting the capital city using drones. In May, Kremlin claimed it was&nbsp;attacked by Ukrainian drones&nbsp;which it deemed&nbsp;was an attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin's life.&nbsp;

At the time, Kremlin described the incident as a "planned terrorist attack" and an "assassination attempt on the president of Russia".&nbsp;

"Tonight, the Kyiv regime attempted a drone strike on the Kremlin residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Two drones were aimed at the Kremlin," the press service had said in a statement.

The “Mohajer-10” is said to be an upgraded version of the “Mohajer-6,” which the officials in the United States have accused Iran of selling to Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine. Iran has since denied these accusations.&nbsp;

According to the official IRNA news agency, the new drone “can fly up to a maximum duration of 24 hours at an altitude of 7,000 metres with an operational range of 2,000 kilometres.”&nbsp;

The payload capacity can reach 300 kilogrammes, double the capacity of the “Mohajer-6” drone allowing it to carry “all kinds of bombs and ammunitions,” IRNA reported.

On Monday (August 21), Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleged that a series of recent deadly attacks against Israelis has been funded and encouraged by Iran. The statement came hours after an Israeli woman was shot dead by suspected Palestinian gunmen in the occupied West Bank.&nbsp;

<h2>The failed coup attempt</h2>

Surprising almost everyone, Prigozhin on June 24 announced a coup against Putin&nbsp;after growing discontent against the&nbsp;top Russian defence officials for overlooking Wagner Group's needs.

The sale "will improve Poland's capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible force that is capable of deterring adversaries and participating in NATO operations," a State Department statement said.

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak confirmed the purchase on social media, stating that "until the procedures are completed and the purchased helicopters are delivered to Poland, the US Army will provide us with Apache helicopters from its own resources."

Last year, Poland decided to acquire the Apaches to replace its age-old Soviet-era helicopter fleet after concerns grew over Russia's military action in neighbouring Ukraine.

The NATO member has actively backed US-led measures to support Ukraine against Russian invasion with billion-dollar investment in US weapons delivered to Ukraine traversing the border through Poland.

US approves Apache helicopter sale worth $12 billion to Poland

A day after developing technical difficulties, Russia's Luna-25 probe has crashed into the Moon, informed&nbsp;Russia's space agency Roscosmos on Sunday (August 20). The Luna-25 probe was the first Russian Moon mission in nearly 50 years.&nbsp;

Roscosmos said the probe crashed into the lunar surface after it spun into an uncontrolled orbit. The agency added there had&nbsp;been&nbsp;an "abnormal situation" during a manoeuvre earlier.

Preliminary investigations showed that the lander "has&nbsp;ceased to exist following a collision with the Moon's surface". The scientists at the agency have started a probe to determine the cause of the crash.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"During the operation, an emergency situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the manoeuvre to be performed with the specified parameters,"&nbsp; Roscosmos wrote in an update on Telegram.

"The management team is currently analysing the situation."

As per the state-run news agency TASS, one of the walls of the venue's pavilion had partially collapsed.

"The area of the collapse is about 30 square meters (323 square feet)," emergency services told TASS.

Citing aviation services, TASS reported that the airspace near the international airport of Vnukovo was briefly closed, delaying departures and arrivals.

Russia announces sanctions on ICC prosecutor, UK ministers

Russian and Chinese navy ships have been jointly conducting maritime patrols in the Pacific Ocean involving naval exercises in order to counter air strikes, Russia's defence ministry said on Friday (August 18).

"A detachment of ships of the Russian Navy and the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy is currently operating in the waters of the East China Sea and has travelled more than 6,400 nautical miles since the start of patrolling," the ministry said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.

Russian state news agency TASS released a video that showed nine large vessels sailing in a diamond formation as crew members stood to attention on deck.

The defence ministry further said that the drills also included practicing the "replenishment of fuel reserves by ships and the transfer of cargo on the go", adding that the joint detachment of ships had covered more than 6,400 nautical miles since the start of the exercises.

"During this period, the sailors of the two countries conducted anti-submarine exercises, repulsed an air strike by a mock enemy, conducted rescue training at sea, and perfected the skills of taking off and landing helicopters on the decks of warships," the ministry statement read.

<h2>Moscow-Beijing ties</h2>

In recent years, the ties between Russia and China have strengthened, as the war with Ukraine has ravaged Russia's relationship with Western governments.

On Monday (August 14), a Chinese defence ministry spokesperson said that naval fleets were conducting maritime patrols in the western and northern regions of the Pacific Ocean.

"These actions are not aimed at a third party and are not related to the current international and regional situation," the spokesperson added.

Earlier this week, Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu visited Russia where he attended the 11th Moscow Conference on International Security and called for closer military cooperation.

Recently, Moscow and Beijing have increased their bilateral defence collaboration as they carried out a joint air patrol over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea in the month of July.&nbsp;

<h2>Poland’s accusations against Belarus</h2>

Poland has been ramping up security along its border with Belarus – a close ally of Russia – after&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/poland-detains-two-russians-for-spreading-wagner-propaganda-625488">Wagner</a> sent its fighters&nbsp;to Minsk in exile following their chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s aborted mutiny in Russia.&nbsp;

Warsaw is planning to move up to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/poland-to-deploy-around-10000-soldiers-to-border-with-belarus-624520">10,000 additional troops</a> to the border with Belarus to support the Border Guard, said Poland’s Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, on Thursday (August 10).&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Polish Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik accused Belarus and Russia of organising another migrant influx at their border. “We’re talking about an operation organised by the Russian and Belarusian secret services that is getting more and more intense,” said Wasik.&nbsp;

Similar accusations were made against Minsk and Moscow starting in 2021 when tens of thousands of migrants and refugees crossed or attempted to cross into Poland from neighbouring Belarus. Latvia and Lithuania also faced an immigration crisis&nbsp;around that time, when thousands of people sought to enter the&nbsp;three EU countries. &nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine pours millions into fortifying border with Russia, Belarus</h2>

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, on Tuesday (August 16), also announced that the country will build new fortifications and military infrastructure in northeast regions that border Russia and Belarus.&nbsp;

This comes as Ukraine after its counteroffensive&nbsp;reportedly managed to regain some of its previously Russian-occupied territory and has maintained a significant force in the north.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian PM took to Telegram and said, “At the request of Kharkiv and Chernihiv...we are allocating 911.5 million hryvnias ($24.7 million) for Kharkiv and 363 million ($9.8 million) for Chernihiv to build military engineering and fortification structures.”&nbsp;

The Chernihiv region that borders Russia and Belarus was partially occupied at the beginning of Moscow’s all-out invasion of Kyiv, in February 2022, but it was reportedly later liberated.&nbsp;

According to a statement by the press office of the minister responsible for coordinating special services, the duo distributed around 300 leaflets in the two Polish cities, which were among around 3,000 pro-Wagner items of propaganda in their possession.&nbsp;

The Polish counter-intelligence agency identified the two men as Alexei T. and Andrei G., without providing any further details. The two men were arrested on Friday after they distributed leaflets containing links to “recruitment websites” for the Wagner group, said the Polish agency.&nbsp;

The material was given to them in Moscow.” According to Polish officials, the duo was set to leave the country on Saturday and receive up to 500,000 roubles ($4,930) from Russian authorities for the “commissioned tasks”.&nbsp;

<h2>Charges against two men</h2>

“Both were charged with espionage, among other things,” said the Polish interior minister, on X, formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;

Prosecutors charged the Russian men with “activities for foreign intelligence against Poland” as well as association with and recruitment for a mercenary service banned under international law, and the promotion of symbols and names supporting Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, said the press office statement.&nbsp;

Poland detains two Russians for spreading Wagner ‘propaganda’

Three suspected Russian spies have been arrested and charged in the United Kingdom after a major national security investigation, British media reported on Tuesday (August 15). According to BBC, all three defendants have been in detention since February.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the suspected spies?</h2>

All three alleged spies are said to have been working for the Russian security services and were identified as Bulgarian nationals. They were reportedly arrested earlier this year under the Official Secrets Act by counter-terrorism detectives from the Metropolitan Police, which deals with espionage cases in the UK.&nbsp;

The BBC report identified the three suspects as Orlin Roussev (45), Bizer Dzhambazov (41), and Katrin Ivanova (31). The trio has also been charged with possessing identity documents with “improper intention”, and are alleged to have had these knowing they were fake.&nbsp;

<h2>Alleged ‘Russian spies’ have lived in the UK ‘for years’</h2>

All three are said to have lived in the UK for several years and held a number of different jobs. They all lived in suburban locations, as per British media reports. Roussev was said to have some business dealings in Russia and moved to the UK in 2009.&nbsp;

The 45-year-old previously worked a technical role in financial services and later owned a business involved in signals intelligence that also included interception of communications or electronic signals, reported BBC. Roussev’s online LinkedIn profile also indicates that he once acted as an adviser to the Bulgarian ministry of energy.

Citing former neighbours of Dzhambazov and Ivanova in Harrow, the report said that they are a couple. The duo reportedly moved to the UK, around 10 years ago and ran a community organisation that provided services for Bulgarian people, including familiarising them with the “culture and norms of British society”.&nbsp;

Bulgarian state documents online also show that they have previously worked for electoral commissions in London. Around the supposed couple’s home in Harrow, neighbours have reported that the detectives spent a long time gathering evidence with a visible police presence for more than a week, according to the BBC.

<h2>What now?</h2>

The trio’s case is set to go on trial at the Old Bailey in London in January 2024. As of now, none of them has entered a plea to the allegations against them, according to British media reports.&nbsp;

Three ‘Russian spies’ arrested after major UK national security investigation: Reports

Odesa, the Ukrainian city on the Black Sea officially opened several beaches for public on Saturday (August 12) for the first time since the start of the Russian invasion. However, bathing is banned during air raid alerts. Odesa is Ukraine's largest port and naval base. It has in past, come under repeated attacks from Russian missiles and drones. The sea was littered with hundreds of thousands of sea mines.

For the safety of residents and after incidents of mines exploding on beaches, the coast was closed.

The city's civilian and military administrations took a joint decision to open beaches, according to Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper who wrote on Telegram app.

Kiper said the beaches would remain open from 8 am to 8 pm.

Reuters quoted Oleksandr, a lifeguard and a former diver, who said that anti-mine net was placed in between two piers to prevent swimmers encountering shallow-water mines.

"The net will stop them. And they (mines) will also be visible from the shore under such weather conditions. Emergency workers will be notified, they will come to handle it," he said.

The opening of the beaches has been a welcome respite from the war for people swimming and sunbathing.

"I have been dreaming of going to the beach and inhaling salty air. We have been missing it a lot. But safety is a top priority," said Svitlana, a resident of the Odesa region.

<h2>Russia claims downing 20 Ukrainian drones</h2>

Meanwhile, Russia said on Saturday that it had shot down 20 unmanned Ukrainian drones near the Crimean peninsula. The Russian defence ministry said on Telegram messaging service that 14 drones were downed by air defence systems and six more were shot down using electronic warfare.

Governor of Kaluga region, about 150 kilometres southwest of Moscow said that a drone was also intercepted in the region.&nbsp;

On Friday officials in Moscow said that they had destroyed a drone that was targetting the Russian capital. The attack was latest in series of attacks on Moscow in recent days.

In July, Ukrainian drone strikes on Crimea blew up an ammunition depot and damaged the bridge across the Kerch Strait linking the peninsula to Russia's mainland.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.

In Ukraine, Russian attacks on Saturday killed a policeman and injured 12 other people in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.

A man was also killed in the Kharkiv region, according to local authorities.

The Moscow region prosecutor’s office said the preliminary cause of the fire was a violation of fire safety requirements during welding work, reported the Russian state news agency, TASS. Additionally, the media report citing the warehouse’s owners said that all employees had left the premises.&nbsp;

<h2>Series of fires and explosions around Moscow</h2>

The Russian capital city and its surrounding areas have recently witnessed a rise in incidents of warehouse fires or explosions.&nbsp;

The incident on Sunday comes days after TASS citing the Russian emergency service reported a massive fire in a warehouse in Odintsovo, a town to the west of Moscow between Vladimir Putin and the Vnukovo airport.

According to TASS, the fire on Thursday (August 10) started in the warehouse, 6.5 kilometres away from Putin’s presidential residence in Novo-Ogaryovo. The size of the fire was reported to be 2,000 square metres, as of midnight (local time). However, the cause of the fire was not immediately known.&nbsp;

A day prior to that, a powerful explosion ripped through a factory which the Russian media has previously said manufactures military equipment like night vision goggles and is around 70 kilometres northeast of Moscow.&nbsp;

The explosion had also led to the death of one woman and injured more than 50, said the Russian officials, at the time. One of the victims has died as a result of their injuries, the TASS news had previously reported.&nbsp;

<h2>Connection to Ukraine drone attacks?</h2>

These incidents have reportedly been linked to a rise in alleged Ukrainian drone attacks in and around the capital city, by pro-Kremlin commentators, as Russia is in the midst of what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.&nbsp;

While Kyiv has not directly claimed responsibility for any attacks against Russia, top officials have reportedly welcomed them. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, last month, said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/war-coming-to-russia-says-ukraines-zelensky-after-moscow-drone-attack-620848">“war” was coming to Russia</a>, hours after a drone attack on the capital Moscow.&nbsp;

“Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia – to its symbolic centres and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process,” Zelensky had said at the time.&nbsp;

A couple, their 23-day-old daughter, and another man were killed in the village of Shyroka Balka, said Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. The couple’s previously critically wounded 12-year-old son later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, he added.&nbsp;

Two people were killed and one person was wounded in the neighbouring village of Stanislav, said Klymenko, adding that the area was struck 12 times with artillery. “The terrorists will never willingly stop killing civilians,” said the Ukrainian minister.&nbsp;

He added, “Terrorists must be stopped. They must be stopped by force. They don’t understand anything else.”&nbsp;

This comes after Ukraine had managed to reclaim the western part of the Kherson region from Russian occupation last November, however, Moscow’s forces have continued regularly shelling the region from across the Dnipro River.

<h2>Russian defence&nbsp;downs four&nbsp;Ukrainian drones over Russia</h2>

Amid a spike in reported Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia, the country’s defence ministry said that they shot at least three more drones over two regions, on Sunday (August 13). According to the Russian defence ministry, three&nbsp;drones were shot down over the Belgorod region and another over the Kursk region.&nbsp;

This also comes a day after Russia claimed to have shot <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/one-killed-six-injured-in-donetsk-after-ukrainian-shelling-use-of-cluster-munitions-russian-official-624944">20 unmanned Ukrainian drones</a> near the Crimean peninsula. Air defence systems were used to down 14 drones and six more using electronic warfare, said the defence ministry, on Saturday (August 12).&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine is trying to pierce Russian lines in south: Russian-installed official</h2>

Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-installed official in parts of Zaporizhzhia controlled by Moscow, on Sunday (August 13) said that the Ukrainian forces are trying to pierce Russian lines in the western parts of the Donetsk region.&nbsp;

The Russian official also reported intense fighting south of Velyka Novosilka where Ukrainian troops are supposedly trying to pierce Russian lines to push down to the coast on the Sea of Azov.&nbsp;

“The enemy managed to enter and gain a foothold in the northern part of Urozhaine after two weeks of the heaviest and bloodiest battles for this settlement,” said Rogov.&nbsp;

However, he also said that the Russian forces still controlled the southern part of Urozhaine, adding that Ukrainian forces were clearly aiming to take control of a town further south, Staromlynivka, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Ukraine launched its counteroffensive last month to retake territory captured by Russia in the south and east of the country. On Saturday, Ukrainian forces also said they had “partial success” near Robotyne on the front line in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.&nbsp;

<h2>Russian warship fires warning shots at cargo ship in Black Sea</h2>

The Russian defence ministry, on Sunday (August 13), said that it fired warning shots with automatic weapons on a Palau-flagged cargo ship in the Black Sea as it made its way to Ukraine.&nbsp;

According to Russian officials, its Vasily Bykov patrol ship had fired automatic weapons on the Sukru Okan vessel after it failed to respond to a halt for an inspection. The ship was said to be heading to the Ukrainian port of Izmail.&nbsp;

“To forcibly stop the vessel, warning fire was opened from automatic weapons,” said the Russian officials, adding that the military boarded the vessel with the help of a Ka-29 helicopter.

“After the inspection group completed its work on board, the Sukru Okan continued on its way to the port of Izmail,” said the Russian defence ministry. A report by Reuters citing Refinitiv shipping data said that the ship seemed to be headed north towards the coast of Bulgaria.

The incident also comes a month after Russia formally backed out of the United Nations-brokered grain deal and stopped Ukraine from exporting its grain via the Black Sea amid the ongoing war.&nbsp;

At least 7, including baby killed in Ukraine after Russian shelling; Moscow downed 4 drones

Russia evacuated more than 2000 people from areas affected by floods in the Far East of the country, said emergency officials on Sunday. The areas have seen floods after Tropical storm Khanun caused heavy rains.

"More than 2,000 people, including 405 children, have been evacuated in Primorye," the Russian emergency situations ministry said on Telegram.

The ministry has said that almost 5000 buildings have been flooded in the Primorye region. The region borders China and North Korea. It added that rescuers had set up 13 temporary accommodation centres in the region. Ministry said that 28 settlement remained cut off.

The city of Ussuriysk has seen flooding that worst in a decade, said state-run TASS news agency. Most of the affected homes are in the cities of Ussuriysk and Spassk-Dalny as well as in the Oktyabrsky municipal district along with Primorye, where Russia's far-east port of Vladivostok is the administrative centre.

Russia has sent a task force to the area. The ministry said in its Telegram channel that a task force would "coordinate the work to eliminate the consequences of the flood." It said its aircraft delivered humanitarian aid and Mi-8 helicopters helped transfer rescuers to the site.

The ministry conveyed that there were no reports of casualties.

TASS said the flood in Ussuriysk, the second largest city in Primorye, was the worst and biggest in a decade and that it had affected between 35 and 40 percent of its territory.

Earlier this week, Khanun battered Japan. It then took a circuitous route and headed towards the Korean peninsula.

The storm also forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of scouts from their jamboree campsite in South Korea.

Russia sends task force to flood-hit far-east, evacuates 2000

At least one civilian was killed and six others were wounded, including a 12-year-old girl, in Donetsk after an intense Ukrainian shelling and use of cluster munitions, said the Russian-installed official in the eastern Ukrainian region, on Saturday (August 12). This comes after much opposition to the United States sending <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-what-are-cluster-bombs-which-us-is-set-to-provide-to-ukraine-why-it-is-facing-opposition-613067">cluster munitions</a> to Ukraine.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukrainian shelling in Donetsk</h2>

Russian-appointed head of the region, Denis Pushilin took to Telegram and said that one civilian was killed in a district of the city of what Moscow calls Donetsk People’s Republic, since claiming to have annexed it. He added that six people were also wounded in Makiivka, which is in the east of Donetsk.&nbsp;

“In total, the enemy fired 127 rounds of ammunition at peaceful cities and regions in the republic,” said Pushilin. He also went on to claim cluster munitions were among the artillery used.&nbsp;

This comes amid reports of both sides using cluster munitions since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Last month, Washington sent cluster munitions to Kyiv amid <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/several-nations-rights-groups-and-un-oppose-us-move-to-send-cluster-bombs-to-ukraine-613459">protests and criticism</a> while Ukraine has since vowed to only use them against concentrations of enemy soldiers amid its counteroffensive.&nbsp;

<h2>'Extensive access'</h2>

Spiegel, citing anonymous security sources, reported that the suspect in question had "extensive access" to the German military's electronic capabilities.

The man, as per an AFP report, in May 2023, approached the Russian embassy in Berlin and the consulate in Bonn "on his own initiative" and offered his cooperation.

He is suspected of providing information about his work for the German military division (Bundeswehr) to Russian diplomatic missions. Allegedly, he did this with the intention of passing it on to a Russian secret service.

As per Die Zeit and Tagesspiegel, the man also has ties to Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

This comes just weeks after the German domestic security agency BfV warned against the risk of an "aggressive Russian espionage operation". Such reports as per DW have increased since Russia began its invasion of neighbouring country Ukraine in February 2022.

In April of this year, Germany also expelled some Russian diplomats over concerns of espionage. In retaliation, Russia had ordered over 20 German diplomats to leave the nation. Further, in May, Moscow imposed a limit of 350 German personnel in the nation.

The officials in Moscow on Friday (August 11) confirmed destroying a drone which was aimed at the capital. This was the latest among several attacks carried out on the city in the past few days. 
 
A Ukrainian drone was eliminated over Moscow's western outskirts, said the defence ministry, adding that no casualties or damage was reported due to the incident. 
 
In July, an ammunition depot blew up and the bridge across the Kerch Strait which links Russia's mainland to the peninsula was damaged in the Ukrainian drone strikes on Crimea. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea.

Russia shoots down two Ukrainian missiles over Crimea bridge

Russian Defence Ministry said on Saturday (August 12) that Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu inspected Russian troop and military preparedness in the Arctic " "to defend specially important installations" in this strategic zone.

The statement from the ministry said that Shoigu was accompanied by Alexey Likhachev, who is the head of state nuclear company Rosatom. Shoigu visited Novaya Zemlya which is in Russia's extreme north.

The defence minister also inspected a testing site for nuclear weapons used during the Soviet era, &nbsp;where "advanced tests for military weapons and equipment" were taking place, the defence ministry said, without giving details.

Ukraine has launched its highly anticipated push in June after stockpiling Western weapons. However, it has struggled to make any major gains in the face of stiff Russian resistance.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 last year. It had already strengthened its military presence in the Arctic before the commencement of what it calls 'special military operation' in Ukraine.

Russia has rehabilitated Soviet-era bases and deployed weapons and anti-aerial S-400 systems in the region, which has vast reserves of hydrocarbons and can serve as a major maritime route between Europe and Asia due to global warming and melting glaciers.

Two countries in this region - Finland and Sweden - grown close to the western military alliance NATO. Russia views such developments as threat to its security.

Finland joined the alliance in April and Sweden is expected to be formally admitted in the coming months.

Russia meanwhile said on Saturday that it shot down 20 unmanned drone sent by Ukraine near the Crimean peninsula. According to information released by the Russian defence ministry on Telegram, 14 drones were shot down by Russian air defence systems. Six more drones were shot down using electronic warfare.

There were no casualties or damage, said the ministry.

On Friday officials in Moscow said that they had destroyed a drone that was targetting the Russian capital. The attack was latest in series of attacks on Moscow in recent days.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.
