In the same ruling, judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) found that Russia had breached an anti-discrimination treaty by failing to support Ukrainian language education in Crimea after its 2014 annexation of the peninsula.

The decisions were a legal setback for Kyiv. The court rejected Ukraine's requests to order reparations for both violations and only ordered Russia to comply with the treaties.

Ukraine's representative Anton Korynevych stressed the judgement was important for Kyiv because it did establish Russia violated international law.

"This is the first time that officially, legally Russia is called a violator of international law," he told journalists after the ruling.

Ukraine filed the lawsuit at the ICJ, also known as the World Court, in 2017, accusing Russia of violating an anti-terrorism treaty by funding pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.

The court's judges said Moscow violated the UN's anti-terrorism treaty by not investigating plausible allegations that some funds were sent from Russia to Ukraine to possibly fund terrorist activities.

In November 2022, a Dutch court sentenced two Russians and a Ukrainian in absentia to life imprisonment for their role in the disaster.

In Crimea, Ukraine had said Russia was trying to erase the culture of ethnic Tatars and Ukrainians. The court dismissed all of the claims related to the Tatars but found Moscow did not do enough to support Ukrainian language education.

The court's judgements are final and without appeal, but it has no way to enforce its rulings.

On Friday, the ICJ will rule in another case in which Ukraine has accused Moscow of falsely applying the 1948 Genocide Convention to justify its February 24, 2022, invasion.

Russia's defence ministry said "195 Russian servicemen... were returned home".

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) brokered the prisoner swap deal, said Russia.

The UAE has played a role in similar&nbsp;prisoner swaps in the past.&nbsp;

In a huge blow to Russian skating, teen star Kamila Valieva has received a four-year suspension for doping. The development was&nbsp;confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport&nbsp;on Monday (Jan 29)&nbsp;after the figure skater failed&nbsp;a doping test ahead of&nbsp;the 2022 Winter Olympics.

With this, the move has effectively stripped the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) of its gold medal in the team event from the&nbsp;Beijing Olympics two years back.&nbsp; Reports said the gold could&nbsp;now go to the US team.

"Kamila Valieva is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation and sanctioned with a four-year period of ineligibility commencing on 25 December 2021," the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said.

"WADA took this appeal to CAS in the interests of fairness for athletes and clean sport and we believe that has been delivered through this decision," it further opined.

In addition, the court claimed that all competitive results achieved by the 17-year-old teenager since that date stand&nbsp;voided, including the gold medal she helped ROC to win in the team event during the 2022 Games.

The CAS panel said that&nbsp;Valieva, who was 15 at the time of the offence, was not to be&nbsp;treated with more leniency that an adult found to have committed the&nbsp;violation.

It is to be noted that Valieva&nbsp;tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine -- which prohibits&nbsp;angina --&nbsp;at the Russian national championships in Dec&nbsp;2021. Her team defended her by saying that she might have tested positive&nbsp;to a mix-up with her grandfather's heart medication. The result of the positive doping test was out just a day after her efforts ensured ROC to clinch gold in the team event in Beijing in early 2022.&nbsp;

As things stand,&nbsp;United States will&nbsp;receive gold medal&nbsp;in the event after Valieva’s Olympic disqualification.&nbsp;

The Voice of America reported that Olympic officials "have told counterparts in the United States that their figure skating team will receive Olympic gold medals" after Valieva's disqualification.

However, since both candidates are not expected to garner more than 50 per cent of the votes, the chances of Sunday’s vote being pushed into a run-off in February are said to be high.&nbsp;

According to recent polls, Right-wing National Coalition’s Stubb is expected to get 22 per cent to 27 per cent support in the first round, followed by Haavisto polling strongly on 20 per cent-23 per cent support, and Jussi Halla-aho from the far-right Finns Party at 18 per cent.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia factor</h2>

The relations between Finland and Russia have significantly deteriorated following Moscow’s invasion of Kyiv in 2022. The war also prompted Helsinki to drop decades of military non-alignment and join NATO in April 2023.&nbsp;

In August 2023, Finland observed an influx of migrants entering through its eastern border without visas and accused Russia of pushing its migrants in a hybrid attack to destabilise it.&nbsp;

Notably, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/wagner-fighters-move-closer-to-poland-border-could-pose-as-migrants-to-enter-eu-warns-polish-pm-620670">similar allegations</a> against Moscow were made by Poland, which has also ramped up security along its border with Russia.&nbsp;

The incumbent president, whose second and last term ends in March, once prided himself on his close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin before becoming one of his most staunch critics.&nbsp;

Both frontrunners in the elections have championed Finland’s independence and its new role as a NATO member, while all nine have promised to take a tough stance toward Russia.&nbsp;

If there is no clear majority following Sunday’s vote, a second voting round will be held on February 11.&nbsp;

Therefore, the incoming president would shape foreign policy in collaboration with the government and would potentially change the geopolitical landscape of the Nordic nation by deciding on how to deal with countries like the United States, Russia and China. Around 4.5 million citizens are eligible to vote in this presidential election and will head to the polls to choose their head of state from an array of nine candidates to replace incumbent President Sauli Niinisto, 75, who is required to step down after serving two six-year terms. What about the candidates? Two politicians are currently leading the race, former conservative Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, 55, and ex-Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, 65, of the Green Party, who is running as an independent. However, since both candidates are not expected to garner more than 50 per cent of the votes, the chances of Sunday’s vote being pushed into a run-off in February are said to be high. According to recent polls, Right-wing National Coalition’s Stubb is expected to get 22 per cent to 27 per cent support in the first round, followed by Haavisto polling strongly on 20 per cent-23 per cent support, and Jussi Halla-aho from the far-right Finns Party at 18 per cent. Russia factor The relations between Finland and Russia have significantly deteriorated following Moscow’s invasion of Kyiv in 2022. The war also prompted Helsinki to drop decades of military non-alignment and join NATO in April 2023. In August 2023, Finland observed an influx of migrants entering through its eastern border without visas and accused Russia of pushing its migrants in a hybrid attack to destabilise it. Notably, similar allegations against Moscow were made by Poland, which has also ramped up security along its border with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (Jan 26) said it was "obvious" that the Russian IL-76 military transport plane, which was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war, was shot down by Ukraine over the border region of Belgorod this week.

As per claims made by Moscow, the plane was flying to the region before the prisoner swap which was to take place on Wednesday (Jan 24) when it was hit by anti-aircraft missiles. It said&nbsp;there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war present inside the aircraft.

Ukraine has neither confirmed nor denied shooting the plane, however, Kyiv&nbsp;has&nbsp;have been questioning if the prisoners were really on board.

"I don't know whether they did it on purpose or thoughtlessly, but it is obvious that they did it," said Putin, while speaking to student soldiers in his first reaction to the plane crash.

<h2>Ukraine aware of Russia's plan to transfer prisoners, alleges Putin</h2>

He further alleged Ukraine was aware of how Russia was planning to shift the prisoners when they hit the plane, an accusation which has been fiercely disputed by Kyiv.

"The main intelligence department of the Ukrainian army knew that we were taking 65 servicemen there. And knowing about it, they struck this aircraft. In any case, it is a crime," he said.

Meanwhile, criminal investigations have been opened by Kyiv and Moscow and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed for an international probe.

The Il-76 was shot down from the sky and turned into a fireball, after crashing in a rural area of Russia on Wednesday, in which 74 people were killed on board, said Russian authorities.&nbsp;

The investigators, who were carrying out a search operation at the site of the military transport plane crash, had also found the flight recorders, as per media reports.

The United States is planning to redeploy nuclear weapons in the United Kingdon to address fears of increasing threat from Russia, said a report in the British media. If the nuclear weapons are deployed in the UK, it will be the first such step from the US in last 15 years. The warheads are expected to be three times stronger than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in Japan during the Second World War. Reports in media said that the nuclear warheads may be deployed at the Royal Ai Force Lakenheath base in Suffolk.

US may redeploy nuclear warheads in UK to counter Russia threat: Report

Prominent Russian nationalist Igor Girkin was on Thursday (Jan 25) convicted by a Moscow court for inciting extremism and jailed for four years.

Girkin, who denied the charges, has strongly condemned President Vladimir Putin for not effectively pursuing the war against Ukraine.

He reportedly had also actively contributed towards instigating the conflict between Kremlin-backed separatists and Kyiv's armed forces in Ukraine's Donbas region in the year 2014.

Moscow City Court said Girkin was found guilty of "public calls to carry out extremist activities", further adding that the 53-year-old would serve his sentence of imprisonment in a general regime colony.

"I serve the Fatherland!" Girkin yelled out after the verdict was read out.

Calling the accusations against Girkin "absurd", his wife rebuffed the allegations.

"The accusation is absolutely absurd," Girkin's wife Miroslava Reginskaya said.

"My husband is a hero of the Russian Spring," she added, referring to the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine.

His lawyer, Alexander Molokhov, called the sentence "an ugly judicial act", and&nbsp;said he would&nbsp;appeal against the verdict soon.

Girkin was arrested in 2023 over the charges of "extremism" after months of public attacks on Russian troops.

He had also denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin for not pushing an offensive aggressive enough against Ukraine.

Dubbing Putin "an old idiot", he took to his social media handle and said that the "country will not survive another six years of this cowardly mediocrity in power", before being arrested.

Girkin's detention was considered a prominent example of how Russia was suppressing the nationalist critics.

During his pre-trial custody, he launched a campaign to challenge Putin in the next presidential election scheduled to be held in March.

While in jail, he gave an interview to the Russian media, where he said that the country had "entered a period of acute instability" and faced "imminent catastrophe".

Russian President Vladimir Putin showered praises on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his leadership and appreciated India for following an 'independent' foreign policy which is not easy to pursue in the current scenario, reported Russia-based media network Russia Today (RT). 
 
The Russian president was interacting with university students in Kaliningrad Region on Thursday (Jan 25), which marked the 'Russian Student Day'. 
 
"India has one of the highest rates of economic development and growth in the world, and that too is due to the leadership qualities of incumbent Prime Minister. It was during his leadership that India reached such a pace," said President Putin, while interacting with students, reported RT.

Nepal called back hundreds of Nepali nationals who were recruited by Russia in its army and also demanded repatriation of the bodies of those who gave their lives in the war, said Nepal’s top diplomat on Thursday (Jan 25). 
 
Speaking with The Associated Press, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud said that it is estimated that more than 200 Nepali nationals have been recruited by the Russian army to fight against Ukraine and at least 14 of them have been killed so far. 
 
“We have asked Russia to immediately stop the recruitment of Nepali nationals in their army, immediately return those who are already serving in the army, repatriate the bodies of those killed, and treat and return those who were wounded in the fighting,” said Saud. 
 
Saud added that Nepal has been seeking monetary compensation for the families of those Nepalis who died in the war with Russia.

“We have information that five of our citizens who fought on behalf of the Russians are being held captive by the Ukraine side. We are asking the Russian side to take initiatives to get them freed,” said Saud. 
 
No comment has been made by Russian officials on the foreign nationals' recruitment for the military service in Ukraine, however, media reports have suggested that not only Nepal, people have also been recruited into the Russian military from Cuba.

The Ukrainian president also vowed a strong response to these attacks as the war approaches its third year.

During his nightly address, Zelensky said more than 200 sites were struck, including 139 residential buildings. The early morning strikes had targeted the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv and Kharkiv, with air raid sirens going off at 5:43 am (local time).&nbsp;

The eastern border city of Kharkiv suffered three waves of attacks, while Kyiv and the southern region of Kherson were subjected to constant shelling. According to Zelensky, Russia launched nearly 40 missiles of different types in “another combined strike to try to circumvent our air defence system.”

Rescue workers in Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, were seen hauling survivors from smouldering piles of rubble as apartment blocks were set ablaze and toppled by the strikes, according to AFP journalists.

“There was a very loud bang, and my mother was already running outside, shouting that we need to leave. We all went to the corridor,” said Daniel Boliukh, 21, as quoted by Reuters. “Then, we went on the balcony to have a look, and saw all these buildings were on fire.”

Residential buildings and medical and educational institutions were damaged in Kyiv, according to emergency services.&nbsp;

Ukraine’s commander-in-chief claimed that the country’s armed forces destroyed 22 of 44 missiles of various types. At least 20 were shot down over the Ukrainian capital, said Kyiv’s military administration.&nbsp;

In Kherson, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said Russian aircraft pounded the region throughout the day. According to officials, two people had been killed in the region.&nbsp;

Apple settles Russian antitrust fine of $13.7 million: Report

Four individuals who miraculously survived a fatal plane crash in northern Afghanistan were in good health, the Taliban administration said in a statement on Monday (Jan 22).&nbsp;

It further said that the bodies of the two passengers who lost their lives in the incident were being moved to the Afghan capital from the remote crash site.

"Four people from the crashed plane in Badakhshan were transferred to Kabul, the medical and rescue teams of the Ministry of Aviation and the Ministry of Defence have provided them with first aid," Taliban administration spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.

The charter plane destined for Moscow, with six people aboard, had gone off the radar on Saturday (Jan 20) after which it was reported that it had crashed in the mountains in northern Afghanistan.&nbsp;

The footage released by Mujahid's office showed the four survivors of the crash, with severe injuries, getting out of a chopper with Taliban officials.

In the video, an unnamed Taliban official said that the health condition of the four men who survived the incident was good.

“Our main goal is to save the lives of our defenders and they were moved to pre-prepared positions where they are now holding defences to prevent the enemy from advancing further,” said Fitio.&nbsp;

Krokhmalne had five houses and before the war was home to only 45 people, according to the Ukrainian military spokesperson. The “several hundred metres” captured by Russian troops were of no consequence and called the capture a “temporary phenomenon”.&nbsp;

This comes after Ukrainian officials in recent days have urged residents in the Kharkiv region to evacuate, citing worsening Russian attacks in the area. Some 3,000 people were evacuated, reported AFP.&nbsp;

The shift in allegiance to Russia can be attributed to China's strategic move to purchase substantial quantities of discounted oil, defying Western sanctions imposed in the aftermath of Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Russian crude oil, facing international reluctance, traded at significant discounts to global benchmarks for a considerable part of the year, boosting China's imports and reshaping its oil landscape.<o:p></o:p>

While Saudi Arabia, a dominant player in China's oil market, experienced a 1.8 per cent decline in imports to 85.96 million tons, Russia's competitively priced crude allowed it to gain market share at the expense of the Middle East giant. The discounted Russian ESPO crude witnessed increasing demand from Chinese and Indian refiners throughout 2023, surpassing the Group of Seven's $60-a-barrel price cap imposed in December 2022.<o:p></o:p>

Despite Western sanctions, Chinese refiners adeptly navigated the situation by employing intermediary traders to manage the shipping and insurance aspects of Russian crude. December deliveries of ESPO crude were priced at a discount ranging from 50 cents to 20 cents per barrel to the ICE Brent benchmark. In contrast, Saudi Arabia responded to these market dynamics by raising prices for its signature Arab Light crude from July onwards. The decision aimed to maintain revenue but led some refiners to explore alternatives, given the availability of more cost-effective cargoes.<o:p></o:p>

To stabilise prices, both Saudi Arabia and Russia, two of the world's top three oil producers, announced output and export cuts. China defies sanctions, secures Russia as top oil supplier in 2023

Russia on Friday urged Hamas to release all hostages during talks with the militant group in Moscow, saying the humanitarian situation in Gaza had reached "catastrophic" levels.

Hamas militants seized about 250 hostages in an October attack on Israel, around 132 of whom Israel says remain in Gaza.&nbsp;

Russian diplomat Mikhail Bogdanov "stressed the need for the speedy release of civilians captured during the attacks of 7 October" in talks with Hamas senior official Musa Abu Marzouk, the foreign ministry said.

The Palestinian Islamist group said in a statement that the talks were "to clarify the movement's position and policies for dealing with the file of prisoners" it was holding.

Russia urges Hamas to release hostages

Ukraine on Thursday (Jan 18) launched a drone attack targeting an oil terminal in St Petersburg as a part of its "new stage of work" in the region, news agency Reuters reported citing comments by a Ukrainian military source.

Reuters could not independently verify the statement, however, the Kyiv Independent also reported the latest development.

"There are confirmed hits. This is a new stage of work in this region," the Ukrainian source said.

Earlier, as per Reuters reports, a Russian-appointed official in occupied southeastern Ukraine said that Kyiv had made failed attempts overnight to target a Russian Baltic Sea oil terminal with a drone strike.

Russia had earlier released a statement to have intercepted a Ukraine drone in the Leningrad region.

It had also released a statement claiming to have shot down drones near Moscow and missiles over the Belgorod border region.

"In the town of Podolsk an attack by a drone flying toward Moscow was repulsed by air defences," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's defence minister issued a warning stating that the country was facing a "very real and pressing" shortage of ammunition in its battles against Russian invasion.

"A shortage of ammunition is a very real and pressing problem that our armed forces are facing at present," Rustem Umerov posted on X after speaking via a video link to the gathering led by France and the United States.

Ukraine says it hit targets in Russia during attack on oil terminal in St Petersburg

Thousands gathered in a rare large protest in the Russian region of Bashkortostan and clashed with riot police who fired tear gas and hit protesters with batons, on Wednesday (Jan 17), after a prominent local rights activist was sentenced to four years in a penal colony.

According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, several people, including law enforcement officials, were injured during the protest and subsequent clashes.&nbsp;

“During the mass disturbances, which were accompanied by violence, including the use of objects used as weapons, several people were injured, including members of law enforcement agencies,” said the investigators.&nbsp;

A monitoring group, OVD-Info group reported that dozens of people were detained, and injured, and one protester had suffered a “smashed head”.&nbsp;

The clashes broke out between the police and a large crowd of people who had gathered in support of the activist, Fail Alsynov in the small Russian town of Baymak.&nbsp;

Large protests are extremely rare in Russia given the risk of arrest over any gatherings which the authorities deem unauthorised.

According to reports, a few thousand people gathered for the demonstration which went on for several days in temperatures as low as -20 degree Celsius.&nbsp;

Footage of the incident showed protesters pelting the police with snowballs which harmlessly smashed against their shields. Several people have also reportedly been detained.&nbsp;

According to the SOTA, an opposition Telegram channel, the clashes broke out after protesters blocked the court building in a bid to try to stop Alsynov from being taken away.

<h2>About Alsynov and his trial</h2>

The local activist was jailed for inciting ethnic hatred and was accused of insulting migrant workers in a speech he made last year over plans to mine for gold in Bashkortostan. A charge which he has since denied saying that his words were mistranslated from the Bashkir language.&nbsp;

However, Alsynov’s supporters said that the case against him was revenge for his role in protests several years earlier during which activists successfully blocked plans to mine for soda on a hill that local people consider a sacred place.

Meanwhile, authorities in the Ukrainian northeast region of Kharkiv ordered the evacuation of more than two dozen villages near the front line amid a rise in attacks by Russia.&nbsp;

A Ukrainian drone attack wounded a six-year-old boy and a young girl, said the local officials, on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Yelena Fedyainova, whose six-year-old boy was injured in one of the attacks, said the drones first struck at about 2:30 am (local time). She also said that the attack blew the window of her apartment.&nbsp;

“The was a blow and a flash,” Fedyainova told reporters, as quoted by Reuters. “I grabbed the child - there were shards everywhere and smoke.” The local officials reported that another girl who was around 10 years old was also injured.&nbsp;

The Mayor of the Russian city Vadim Kstenin, said a state of emergency had been declared to deal with the impact of the attack. Voronezh is home to more than one million people and is around 250 kilometres away from the Ukrainian border.&nbsp;

The Russian city is also located near an air base which reportedly holds some of the country’s Sukhoi Su-34 bombers. Russian news outlet Shot reported on Telegram that at least 15 blasts were heard near the air base.&nbsp;

Russia’s Voronezh declares state of emergency as Ukraine drone attack injures two children

Russia on Monday (Jan 15) said that it has convicted over 200 Ukrainian prisoners of war to severe prison terms, some of which were life sentences.

The development comes when the Kremlin is about to complete nearly two years of its offensive against Ukraine.

Russia is believed to have held thousands of Ukrainian troops captive during the siege of the port city of Mariupol in 2022. &nbsp;

International rights organisations and Kiev have criticised Moscow's POW trials calling the move illegal.&nbsp;

"More than 200 Ukrainian military personnel have been sentenced to long prison sentences for committing murder of civilians and mistreating prisoners (of war)," Alexander Bastrykin, the head of Russia's Investigative Committee, said in an interview to state news outlet RIA Novosti.

He further claimed that Moscow would continue its efforts to prosecute Ukrainian military personnel, including "high-level officials."

While some Ukrainian prisoners of war were transferred to Russia, many of them were detained in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.

In the interview, Bastrykin did not clarify if the troops were sentenced in Russia or occupied Ukraine.

However, as per news agency AFP reports, state-run outlet RT quoted an Investigative Committee source as saying that 242 soldiers were handed sentences in occupied Ukraine.

<h2>'Pro-Ukrainian sabotage'</h2>

Bastrykin also shared details about Russia's battle against pro-Ukrainian sabotage.

He revealed that the authorities had not only uncovered railway sabotage in regions close to the Ukrainian border like Bryansk, but also in the Siberian regions of Tyumen, Tomsk, Novosibirsk and the northern Komi region.

"In the conditions of the special military operation, we can see Ukrainian special services are trying to wage their subversive activities, using terrorist methods, despite possible accidental victims," Bastrykin said.

He further warned that Russians were being "misled... promised rewards and pushed to commit illegal acts."

Recently, Russia and Belarus have been affected by a series of mysterious train derailments that reportedly were aimed at obstructing army supply routes to Ukraine.

Bastrykin said that the number of cases of extremism rose by 62 per cent in the year 2023 as compared to 2022, indicating that Moscow was intensifying its clampdown on opponents while troops were fighting in Ukraine.

He stated that Moscow had filed 273 cases for spreading fakes&nbsp;on the Russian army and 81 cases over "discrediting" Moscow's forces.

<h2>Ukraine and Russia swap prisoners of war in first deal in months&nbsp;</h2>

Earlier on Jan 3, Russia and Ukraine had exchanged hundreds of prisoners of war in the first such deal in nearly five months which was mediated by the United Arab Emirates.&nbsp;

Navalny also claimed that his religious rights were being violated in the prison since authorities limit inmates to one book at a time.&nbsp;

According to the regulations, he said “I am allowed to have 10 books. I need 2 books to practice my religion. One book is not enough for me, it directly violates my religious rights.”

Navalny also alleged that this rule was to prevent the study of Islam and that “some restrictions are constantly being invented,” such as a ban on Muslim rosary beads. Whereas a Christian cross is allowed, he claimed.

Navalny’s arguments have reportedly prompted a detailed discussion with the judge and a representative of the justice ministry on prison libraries, meal arrangements and cell furnishings.&nbsp;

‘Two mugs of boiling water…pieces of disgusting bread’: Navalny tells top court about harsh prison conditions

India's purchase of discounted Russian crude oil has fallen to an 11-month low with the rise in prices, said AFP citing figures from global energy trade intelligence platform Kpler. India had continued to purchase Russian oil even after Western sanctions on Russia and had made it clear that it would make decisions as per its national interests.

However, the oil purchase has fallen after production cuts from OPEC+ and increased demand from China made the prices go up.

As per figures with Kpler,&nbsp;refiners in India purchased 1.45 million barrels per day of Russian oil last month. This is the lowest figure since last January.

Viktor Katona lead crude analyst at Kpler told AFP that "interplay between India and China" was a key factor behind the 11-month low "as both countries now vie for the same barrels".

In 10 months after Russia invaded Ukraine, India saved USD 3.6 billion by purchasing discounted Russian oil, as per figures presented in the Parliament of India.

The latest barrage of hypersonic projectiles fired by Moscow comes less than a week after Kyiv cautioned that it only had sufficient ammunition to withstand a few more powerful attacks amid Russia's intense bombardment.

"The enemy launched dozens of missiles at peaceful cities and villages of Ukraine," Ukraine's deputy head of the presidency Oleksiy Kuleba said, adding that 33 were injured.

Some of the Ukrainian targets hit by the Russian projectiles were high-rise buildings and a shopping centre in President Volodymyr Zelensky's hometown Kryvyi Rig, claiming the life of at least one, said Kuleba.

"In Kryvyi Rig, there are many breakages in power grids, there are power outages, and electric transport does not work," he said.

Separate "explosions" in the western region of Khmelnytsky, far from the frontlines in the east, he said, killed one person.

"Over the past 24 hours we received 1,300 requests to send Belgorod children to school camps away from the city, in other regions," he said.

The evacuation from Belgorod, which is less than 20 miles (32 kilometres) from the Ukrainian border, is so far the largest of a major Russian city ever since Moscow began its offensive against Kyiv in Feb 2022.

It has also been reported that Putin, who is facing elections in March, has been softening his speeches to focus on traditional Russian values and unity.&nbsp;

“I would like our meeting to be a clear, understandable signal to all my colleagues throughout the Russian Federation, and at all levels – a clear signal to ensure that my colleagues are always and everywhere with you, I repeat, any level of power,” he told the families gathered at a chapel at his residence in Novo-Ogaryovo outside Moscow.

Notably, this year Putin did not call for a ceasefire in Ukraine to coincide with the holiday – like he did last year – which many Orthodox Christians celebrate on January 6-7.&nbsp;

Orthodox Christmas services were also held in parts of Ukraine occupied by Russian, unlike the rest of the war-torn country.&nbsp;

Russia has hit Ukraine with missiles supplied by North Korea for the first time during its invasion, a senior Kyiv official said on Friday, corroborating an earlier assertion by the U.S. White House.

The statement on social media platform X came after the governor of the northeastern region of Kharkiv said that his region had been struck by missiles fired by Russia that were not Russian-made.

"There is no longer any disguise ... as part of its outright genocidal war, the Russian Federation for the first time struck at the territory of Ukraine with missiles received from ... North Korea," the senior Kyiv official, Mykhailo Podolyak, said.

He did not provide evidence for the missiles being North Korean. In its statement on Thursday, Washington cited declassified intelligence.

"(Russia) is attacking Ukrainians with missiles received from a state where citizens are tortured in concentration camps for having an unregistered radio, talking to a tourist, watching TV shows," Podolyak said.

The Kremlin did not respond to a request for comment on the U.S. assertion that Russia had fired North Korean-supplied short-range ballistic missiles at Ukraine.

Earlier on Friday, the Kharkiv regional governor said missiles produced outside Russia had been fired into the province at the end of December and the beginning of January.

A Reuters video operator filmed the aftermath of a Russian air strike on the regional capital of Kharkiv on Jan. 2, in which a missile landed close to the city centre, leaving behind a deep crater and missile debris.

Shown the Reuters footage for review, Joost Oliemans, a Dutch researcher and expert on North Korea's military, said the missile remnants looked like they were from North Korea.

"It (the footage) appears to show the main body as well as the engine section of a missile that is pretty much a dead match for a North Korean type of missile that we've actually seen pretty clear photos of in the past few years," he said.

Kharkiv regional prosecutors said they were conducting an investigation into the country of origin of three missiles used by Russia to hit the provincial capital on Tuesday. Their statement did not name North Korea.

That attack on Kharkiv city killed two people and wounded 62, the prosecutor's office said.

Ukraine's air force said earlier on Friday it could not yet confirm the country of manufacture of the missiles in question.

While the United States would not say specifically what type of missiles Pyongyang had sent to Russia, U.S. spokesman John Kirby said they had a range of about 900 km (550 miles). He released a graphic that appeared to show KN-23 and KN-25 short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs).

North Korea has been under a United Nations arms embargo since it first tested a nuclear bomb in 2006.

U.N. Security Council resolutions - approved with Russian support - ban countries from trading weapons or other military equipment with North Korea.

In November, South Korean authorities said North Korea may have supplied SRBMs to Russia as part of a larger arms deal that also included anti-tank and anti-air missiles, artillery and mortar shells, and rifles.

Both Moscow and Pyongyang have previously denied conducting any arms deals but vowed last year to deepen military relations.

Russia said that the city of Belgorod was attacked by Ukraine with missiles and rockets in which at least 21 people were killed and dozens were wounded, which included 17 children, as per the local authorities. 
 
It was "a terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime against a civilian city," said Russia's ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya. "In order to increase the number of casualties of the terrorist attack they used cluster munitions," he added, further claiming that a sports centre, an ice rink and a university were targeted by Kyiv.

"(It was a) deliberate, indiscriminate attack against a civilian target. As per a New York Times report, which cited Russian authorities, at least 18 people – including two children - were killed in the attack on the Russian city. While, over&nbsp;100 people have suffered injuries.

Russia terms Belgorod attack as 'terrorism', vows revenge for strike on city

In the Kyiv region, two others were killed and one person was killed in the eastern city of Kharkiv, as per the&nbsp;regional authorities.

Barrages of loud explosions were heard in Ukraine's capital city Kyiv after Ukraine's air force earlier said that multiple missiles were flying towards the capital city. This happened shortly after&nbsp;nationwide air alerts were raised in Ukraine due to a threat from Russian bombers.

The city's military administration said that many fragments of downed rockets were seen on the roads of various districts which included residential buildings. It was reported that Russia launched Kinzhal missiles. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that power supply was not available in several areas of the capital as&nbsp;250,000 consumers were left in darkness.

Ukraine's national Ukrenergo energy company said, "250.000 consumers were without electricity in Kyiv and its region following Russian strikes."

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said that explosions occurred and the capital was on fire nearly an hour after the military administration of the region said that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones were detected in the airspace of the city.

Ukraine's air force said numerous missiles were flying towards the capital city shortly after nationwide air alerts were raised because of a threat from Russian bombers. "Kyiv - stay in shelters. Many missiles heading in your direction," said the air force&nbsp;on Telegram. 
 
Hours before, the military had issued a warning regarding the 20 Russian strategic bombers which were airborne. Taking to Telegram, military officials said that after takeoffs were detected from the far northern Olenya airfield and southern Engels airbase, multiple Tupolev Tu-95MS bombers were present in Russia's airspace.

On December 29, Russia&nbsp;launched multiple strikes across Ukrainian cities, including the capital, in which 39 people were killed.
