United States President Joe Biden and leaders of the G7 countries on Wednesday (Dec 6) virtually met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and agreed to restrict imports of Russian diamonds from 2024 in a show of support.

By the beginning of September, a "robust traceability-based verification and certification mechanism for rough diamonds within the G7" will be established, it added.

"The free world vitally needs to maintain its consolidation, maintain interaction, maintain support for those whose freedom is being attacked."

Earlier, the White House also warned that the US would run out of money for more Ukraine aid by the end of the year if Congress refuses to approve funds.

The G7 leaders addressed the issue of support for Kyiv in their statement, vowing that they would continue to back Ukraine.

"Our steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine's fight for its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity will never waver," they said.

On the Israel-Hamas conflict, the leaders said that "more effective action" was required to limit the displacement of&nbsp;civilians, and also echoed support for more pauses in the fighting allowing more aid.

"More urgent action is needed to address the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and minimize civilian casualties," they said.&nbsp;

Russian investigators said that preliminary data suggests that the 14-year-old brought a shotgun to school, shot a fellow pupil dead, wounded five other children and then killed herself.&nbsp;

“According to preliminary investigation data, a 14-year-old girl brought a pump-action shotgun to school, from which she fired shots at her classmates,” Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement. &nbsp;

It added that those wounded had been taken to the hospital while investigators were working to establish a motive.&nbsp;

The United States said Tuesday that Russia rejected a new proposal to free two detained Americans, Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan.

US says Russia rejected 'substantial' proposal to free two Americans

Six Nepalese nationals serving in the Russian Army have been killed in the war with Ukraine, the government announced on Monday, urging Moscow not to recruit Nepali citizens into its forces.

Nepal’s Foreign Ministry in a statement identified the deceased as Pritam Karki of Syangja, Ganga Raj Moktan of Ilam, Raj Kumar Karki of Dolakha, Rupak Karki of Kapilvastu, Dewan Rai of Kaski and Sandeep Thapaliya of Gorkha.

The ministry has requested Russia to send the bodies of the Nepalis killed in the Russia-Ukraine war and provide compensation to the victims’ families, the statement said.

Nepal has also requested Russia not to recruit its citizens into the Russian army and if any Nepali nationals have been recruited, to immediately return them to Nepal.

The ministry also said that diplomatic efforts are on to release one Nepalese who has been taken hostage by Ukraine while serving in the Russian Army.

6 Nepalese killed fighting for Russia against Ukraine, says govt, seeks compensation for victims’ kin

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said Friday it will refer Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) objections about its non-compliant status to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). WADA said it received formal notification on Friday from RUSADA that it disputes WADA's allegation of non-compliance, proposed consequences and conditions for reinstatement, prompting WADA's decision to send the matter to CAS.

"As such, the consequences will not apply until such time as CAS makes its ruling," WADA said in a statement. "Until all the reinstatement conditions are met, RUSADA cannot be considered for reinstatement."

A Russian man pleaded guilty on Thursday (Nov 30) to involvement in developing the Trickbot malware which was used to extort American businesses including hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, the US justice department said.&nbsp;

The man, identified as 40-year-old Vladimir Dunaev is from Russia’s Far East Amur Oblast and was extradited from South Korea to the US two years ago,&nbsp; according to court documents.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Charges against the Russian national</h2>

Dunaev was charged with conspiracy to commit computer fraud and identity theft and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud. He has pleaded guilty to both charges in a court in the US state of Ohio, said the Department of Justice (DOJ).&nbsp;

According to the US officials, Dunaev provided “specialised services and technical abilities in furtherance of the Trickbot scheme.”

He will be charged on March 20, 2024, and faces a maximum penalty of 35 years in prison on both counts.&nbsp;

Dunaev was among nine with alleged links to Russian intelligence services, and were indicted in the US for involvement in the Trickbot scheme.&nbsp;

According to the DOJ, Dunaev’s participation in the scheme was linked to 10 victims in the Northern District of Ohio, including Avon schools and a North Canton real-estate company, who were “defrauded of more than $3.4 million via ransomware deployed by Trickbot.”

“Dunaev and his codefendants hid behind their keyboards, first to create Trickbot, then using it to infect millions of computers worldwide – including those used by hospitals, schools, and businesses – invading privacy and causing untold disruption and financial damage,” said US Attorney Rebecca Lutzko, in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>What is Trickbot and how did it affect the US?</h2>

Trickbot is a malicious software which was used to launch cyber-attacks which affected millions of Americans as well as hospitals, schools, and businesses and caused tens of millions of dollars in losses.&nbsp;

The group that Dunaev was said to be a part of particularly targeted hospitals and healthcare services during the Covid pandemic in 2020-21, with the malware and an associated ransomware programme called Conti, said the US officials.&nbsp;

The Trickbot group launched cyber attacks against hundreds of targets across nearly the entire US and more than 30 other countries since 2016. The malware was also reportedly used to steal bank account logins and passwords from victims’ computers to steal money from their accounts.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, British officials said the Trickbot gang had extorted at least $180 million from people across the world.

Earlier this year, one of Dunaev’s co-conspirators and a Latvian national Alla Witte, who was also a Trickbot malware developer, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit computer fraud and was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

The Russian-American journalist was detained on October 18 after she allegedly failed to register as a “foreign agent” during a visit to Russia.&nbsp;

If found guilty, Kurmasheva faces up to five years in prison.

She was also fined $103 (10,000 roubles) on October 11 after she failed to register her US passport with Russian authorities, reported Reuters citing court documents.

“Alsu has spent 45 days behind bars in Russia and, today, her unjust, politically motivated detention has been extended,” said RFE/RL acting President Jeffrey Gedmin, in a statement.&nbsp;

A Russian court in Moscow on Tuesday (Nov 28) also extended Gershkovich, who is awaiting trial on espionage charges, until January 30, 2024.&nbsp;

The 32-year-old American citizen was detained in March by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage for which he could face up to 20 years in prison.&nbsp;

Both Kurmasheva and Gershkovich deny the charges against them.

Russia's attempt to compare the country's Olympic Committee suspension with the situation of Israeli athletes following the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas was out of place, the International Olympic Committee said on Friday. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday said the IOC was aligning itself with western political decisions after the Olympic body had said any discrimination against athletes at the Games would be swiftly dealt with because they are not responsible for the decisions of their governments.

The IOC had been responding to a question regarding Israeli athletes participating at next year's Paris Olympics and the potential refusal of other nations' athletes to compete against them over the ongoing conflict. Lavrov called the IOC statement "shameful", saying it "proves its political bias".

"This (Russian) is a unique situation and cannot be compared to any other war or conflict in the world, because the measures taken and recommendations made by the IOC are a consequence of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army during the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022," an IOC spokesperson said. Russia is due to hold presidential elections in 2024. Since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin has sought to portray what he calls the 'special military operation' as part of an existential battle with the West. He has said that he will defend the 'sacred' civilisation from what he calls as the West decadence.

According to a report by state news agency TASS, the legislation has been prepared by the interior ministry and it forces all foreigners to sign an agreement that would restrict what they can say publicly.

TASS said that a foreigner in Russia will be prohibited from "interfering with the activities of public authorities of the Russian Federation, discrediting in any form the foreign and domestic state policy of the Russian Federation, public authorities and their officials"

It has been reported that the proposed agreement would have clauses that deal with family, morality, &nbsp;"propaganda about non-traditional sexual relations" and history.

Foreigners will be barred from "distorting the historical truth about the feat of the Soviet people in the defence of the Fatherland and its contribution to the victory over fascism".

It was not immediately clear if the legislation was aimed at certain nationalities or all foreigners. Also, there was no information about what the punishment would be if a foreigner is held to have violated terms of the agreement.

Reuters reported that Kremlin declined to comment.

Earlier this month, Kremlin said that some degree of censorship was needed as Russian troops were fighting in Ukraine.

For the draft legislation to become a law, it will have to be submitted in State Duma, which is the lower house of the Russian parliament. The legislation would have to go through committee review and a number of readings before being submitted to President Putin for his assent.

The hearing took place behind closed doors since Russian authorities say details of the criminal case against the American journalist are classified. Gershkovich is the first US journalist to be detained on spying charges in Russia since the Cold War.

Moscow has said that Gershkovich was caught “red-handed” and accused him of trying to obtain military secrets. The reporter was “acting on the instructions of the American side, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex,” the FSB has alleged.&nbsp;

The WSJ and Dow Jones said that Gershkovich was simply doing his job in Russia and have repeatedly denied the espionage charges.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters citing diplomats said Gershkovich was probably detained as part of broader Russian effort to build up a store of arrest of US citizens to be swapped for Russian citizens, including convicted spies.

However, Russia rarely releases people imprisoned while awaiting trial on serious charges. Moscow has also previously rejected the possibility of an exchange involving Gershkovich until a verdict is reached in his case.&nbsp;

So far, no date has been announced for his trial while the American journalist has appealed his detention several times. All the appeals have been rejected by the Russian court.&nbsp;

Millions without power as storm hits Russia, Ukraine

At least five people were killed and five others were injured in Russian shelling in Ukraine’s southern region of Kherson and eastern Donetsk region over the past 24 hours, said Ukrainian officials, on Thursday (Nov 23).&nbsp;

Russian state television said that their war correspondent was killed after sustaining shrapnel wounds in a drone strike by Ukrainian forces in Russia-controlled southeastern Ukraine.

Separately, a Russian actress was also killed in a Ukrainian attack while performing in the Russian-controlled area of eastern Ukraine, said her theatre, on Thursday.&nbsp;

At least three people were killed after an attack on the Ukrainian village of Chornobaivka, in the southern Kherson region, said Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, in a post on Telegram.&nbsp;

“It is preliminarily known that the shelling was carried out with cluster munitions,” said Yermak. The attack also left five people injured and destroyed 60 buildings, said Ukraine’s Interior Minister Igor Klymenko.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the regional prosecutor’s office in Kherson reported the death of a man who was riding a bicycle when Russian forces shelled the town of Beryslav. Moscow also&nbsp;shelled&nbsp;several settlements in the Kherson district.&nbsp;

The incident, as per Russian investigators, took place on Wednesday (Nov 22) when they said Ukrainian armed forces struck a group of Russian journalists with fragmentation shells and a drone.

Maksudov, a 38-year-old war correspondent working for Rossiya 24, suffered a grave shrapnel wound. “Boris Maksudov died on 11/23/2023 after being wounded in Zaporizhzhia,” said the state TV.&nbsp;

“The day before, the film crew came under fire from the (Armed Forces of Ukraine) AFU,” it added. Maksudov was “hospitalised urgently but the injuries turned out to be fatal,” said Rossiya 24.

The Russian investigator, who was not identified by the country’s media, said one civilian had been killed but gave no other information about the death or military casualties.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces said that they struck what they said was a Russian military award ceremony and said 25 people were killed and over 100 were wounded.&nbsp;

The attack was “revenge for the 128th”, said Robert Brovdi, a Ukrainian military commander, in a post on social media, referring to the Russian strike on soldiers from Ukraine’s 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade due to which the brigade said that it lost 19 of its soldiers.&nbsp;

Reuters citing unverified footage of the incident said soldiers were watching Menshikh singing on stage with a guitar when, mid-song, the building was suddenly rocked by a blast.&nbsp;

Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo on Wednesday (Nov 22) said that his country will close all but the northernmost crossing border with Russia in a bid to control the flow of migrants.

Helsinki has claimed that the asylum seekers are being pushed into the Nordic nation deliberately by Russia.

"The government has today decided to close more border posts. Only Raja-Jooseppi station will remain open," Prime Minister Petteri Orpo told a press conference.

Since the beginning of August, nearly 700 asylum seekers entered Finland without a visa over its border with Russia.

Following a surge in migrants, last week Finland shut half of its eight crossings to Russia.

"Unfortunately, these measures have not been able to stop this phenomenon," Orpo said.

The government said that "it is clear that foreign authorities and other actors have played a role in facilitating the entry of persons crossing the border into Finland".

"The situation also involves international crime," the government said in a statement.

Earlier in October, the Finnish border guard warned of a shift in Russia's policy as it started to allow migrants without proper documentation to cross the border.

Russia's Wagner group to offer air defence to Hezbollah or Iran, says US

A senior Russian diplomat said on Tuesday (Nov 21) that co-existing with Ukraine under its current 'regime' is not possible and that Russia can withstand power of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for as long as it needs till Moscow's goal of demilitarising Ukraine was achieved. Currently Russia controls 17.5 per cent of Ukrainian territory in reference to internationally recognised Ukrainian borders. This includes Crimea which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Rodion Miroshnik, Russia's Ambassador-at-large was speaking with reporters in Russian capital Moscow when he said this.

"The current regime (in Kyiv) is absolutely toxic, we do not see any options for co-existence with it at the moment," he said.

Russian diplomat rules out co-existence with 'current regime' in Ukraine

Russia launched a series of drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv early on Sunday (Nov 19) for the second night in a row as it ramps up attacks after several weeks of pause, said the city’s administration.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a fresh round of sanctions against Russian officials and groups, which he said are aimed at fighting wartime abductions of Ukrainian children and other “Russian terror”.&nbsp;

<h2>Russian strike in Zaporizhzhia</h2>

According to the Ukrainian police, Russia fired a series of rockets at the village of Komyshuvakha close to the Ukrainian frontline region of Zaporizhzhia, which Moscow annexed last year.&nbsp;

Speaking about the incident, they said, “As a result of the first two strikes, four local residents were injured and a fire broke out in a residential building.”&nbsp;

<h2>Increase in number of drone attacks</h2>

The attack in Zaporizhzhia also came as the Ukrainian air force said Russia fired 38 drones at its territory overnight which is said to be the highest reported number in more than six weeks.

Ukraine’s air force said Saturday it shot down 29 of the 38 Iranian-made Shahed drones fired by Russia which were said to be packed with explosives and would detonate upon reaching their targets.&nbsp;

Ukraine’s emergency services said that one of the drones hit an energy facility in the southern Odesa region, resulting in a fire that was quickly extinguished. The attack has left around 2,000 homes without power.

Drone attacks by Russia continued for a second night on Kyiv where Russian “UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were launched in many groups and attacked Kyiv in waves, from different directions, at the same time constantly changing the vectors of movement along the route,” said Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv’s military administration, on Telegram.&nbsp;

“That is why the air raid alerts were announced several times in the capital,” he added.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian official citing preliminary information said that the war-torn country’s air defence systems hit close to 10 Shahed drones in and around Kyiv. There have been no initial reports of “critical damage” or casualties, said Popko.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry said its forces had shot down 20 Ukrainian drones over Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine, and seven naval drones in the Black Sea, off Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president has sanctioned 37 Russian groups and 108 people including former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and former minister of education and science, Dmytro Tabachnyk, who was stripped off Ukrainian citizenship in February.

“We are increasing the pressure of our state onto them and each of them must be held responsible for what they have done,” said Zelensky, in his nightly address after his office issued corresponding decrees with his signature.

The decrees showed a range of 10-year penalties against Russian individuals and five-year penalties against non-profit groups, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The list included “those involved in the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children from the occupied territory” and individuals who “in various ways help Russian terror against Ukraine,” said Zelensky, during his nightly address.&nbsp;

However, he did not associate specific individuals or groups with particular wrongdoings. The recently sanctioned Russian groups included several whose names or websites indicate they work with children.

Kyiv has accused Moscow of taking about 20,000 children to Russia or Russian-held territory without the consent of family or guardians which the United Nations treaty defines as genocide.&nbsp;

'Proclivity for pyrotechnics' can assume literal meaning for some people but for Harry Potter fans, it represents a full permission to go 'boom'. On a serious note, there's absolutely nothing funny about wars and the endless suffering they cause but every now and then, a video emerges and&nbsp;grabs the attention of social media for a variety of reasons.

A video posted by an Instagram account is being watched widely and being commented upon.

So it starts like this. The black-and-white visuals, apparently taken from a drone in the sky, show a soldier sitting in a vehicle. The vehicle looks like a tank but not quite.&nbsp;

In any case, you would expect the only person in any vehicle to firmly have it under control. But just a few seconds into the video, he jumps off the vehicle while it continues on its path. There is no initial clue as to why he jumped but to add to some initial amazement, the soldier keeps&nbsp;on running and running away from the vehicle without any apparent reason. He&nbsp;continues his run&nbsp;even after there's sufficient distance between him and the vehicle.

He runs and runs more as if his life depends&nbsp;on it. Takes shelter in what looks like the remains of a destroyed tank, all the while his ditched vehicle moves ahead without any incident.

And then comes an almighty blast, sending shockwaves through the area and&nbsp;justifying the soldier's great haste to keep maximum possible distance from himself and the vehicle.

Finland alleges that Russian authorities are funneling migrants as retaliation for its decision for enhanced defence cooperation with the US. Kremlin denies the claim.

The Israel-Hamas war has attracted the global gaze to this conflict in the Middle East. Given this, Cameron's visit to Kyiv is indeed an important development. There was also a symbolism attached to Cameron's visit as this was his first visit after becoming the UK's foreign minister.

Cameron met Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"We will continue to give you the moral support, diplomatic support, the economic support, but above all, the military support, that you need not just this year, and next year, but for however long it takes," Cameron said during a meeting with Zelensky.

"Russia thinks it can wait this war out, and that the West will eventually turn its attention elsewhere. This could not be further from the truth," he added in a separate statement.

Ukranian army says its brigade stormed Russian trenches near Bakhmut

Russia on Thursday (Nov 16) sentenced artist Alexandra Skochilenko to seven years imprisonment "for disseminating false information" about the army after she changed supermarket price tags with slogans denouncing Russia's military offensive in Ukraine.

As per news agency AFP, Skochilenko's backers, opposing judge Oksana Demiasheva's verdict, yelled "shame" and "we're with you Sasha" in the courtroom, voicing support for her.

Skochilenko, 33, is the latest among hundreds of Russians who have either been detained, imprisoned or fined for criticising Puin's large-scale Ukraine intervention.

In her final statement, Skochilenko told the judge that she was a pacifist who valued human life above everything else.

"Whatever decision you take, you'll go down in history," Skochilenko told the judge, according to a recording of her speech made by supporters.

Skochilenko, in the court, admitted to having changed the tags, but said&nbsp;the text written on them was false.

"How weak is our prosecutor's faith in our state and society if he thinks our statehood and public safety can be ruined by five little pieces of paper?" she said.

"Everyone sees and knows that you are not judging a terrorist. You're not trying an extremist. You're not even trying a political activist. You're judging a pacifist," she added.&nbsp;

Skochilenko, as per news agency AFP, suffers from health issues like coeliac disease and a congenital heart defect.

An illustrator and musician, Skochilenko was detained in April 2022, which was around the same time as Russia's fierce blockade of Ukraine's port city of Mariupol.

Skochilenko, who is openly gay, has also said that "hatred towards minorities" in deeply conservative Russia could help explain the trial against her.

She had joined street protests in Russia in the first days of Moscow's offensive.

A Russian artist who used and even replaced supermarket tags with messages against Russia's Ukraine invasion is awaiting the verdict of the court in a case against her. The verdict is expected to come on Thursday (November 16). The state prosecutor has asked for an eight-year jail sentence for her.

The case against Alexandra Skochilenko (33) is being viewed as part of a crackdown on dissent against Russia's "special military operation' in Ukraine. The crackdown has led to almost 20,000 people being detained and more than 800 criminal cases.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 last year. Russia has since then made its laws stricter in an attempt to silence critics of war. Russian President Vladimir Putin has chosen to project the Ukraine war as an existential struggle with the West.

The state prosecutor has asked the court to send Skochilenko to jail for eight years and also impose a three-year ban on using the internet. He has called her act a serious crime which has been committed out of hatred for Russia.

Skochilenko's lawyers have said that she has only acted as per her conscience and has committed no crime. They've also said that she would not survive jail because of a health issue she is suffering from already.

Human rights group Amnesty International has declared that Skochilenko is "a prisoner of conscience" which means someone who is in jail just because of who they are or what they believe.

Yana Nepopvinnova, one of Skochilenko's lawyers, told the court on Monday that she should be acquitted.

"You should never punish people for thinking and feeling differently. You should never punish people for objective criticism of the authorities and their decisions," she said.

The cache of millions of files sheds light on the blue-chip accountancy firm’s work for the Kremlin-connected mining and banking tycoon, Alexei Mordashov, raising serious questions about PwC Cyprus’ role in a potential sanctions breach.

According to the Guardian, the files contain emails of PwC Cyprus staff discussing transfers of about a third of the shares in Tui, Europe’s largest travel company, to Mordashov’s life partner.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of what Russia calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine, western countries have imposed the largest-ever package of sanctions against Moscow and its business elite, but recently the focus has shifted to ensuring the enforcement of those restrictions.&nbsp;

The leak also revealed Cyprus’ role as a gateway into Europe for the Kremlin-connected elite as out of 104 Russian billionaires&nbsp;that the Forbes magazine identified this year two-thirds appeared alongside family members as clients of the island’s professional service providers.

According to the reports, 71 Russian clients have come under sanctions since February 2022. However, advisers have reportedly said that many of these relationships have been terminated.&nbsp;

The Chinese and Pakistani navies are holding weeklong drills in the Arabian Sea days after the Russian Pacific Fleet and Myanmar practised repelling attacks in their first maritime exercise, while India and the United States pledged security cooperation.

At a naval base in Karachi on Saturday, the Chinese and Pakistani navies kicked off the exercise in the waters and airspace of the northern Arabian Sea in drills that include anti-submarine operations. The exercise will end on Nov&nbsp;17.

Microsoft chief on Saturday (Nov 11) accused Russia of disseminating "disinformation" about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas as tensions soar in the Middle East region.

Microsoft vice chair and president, Brad Smith, on being asked about his company's role in promoting peace at an international peace forum in Paris, said that the US tech giant and its rivals were battling disinformation, especially with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He stated that Microsoft and other companies are doing this "by creating technological tools that facilitate the detection of manipulated, modified, altered content," according to remarks translated into French by radio France Inter.&nbsp;

"We are getting very good at identifying a Russian campaign, like when they tried to tell people not to get the Covid vaccine," he said.

"Or today, when we see Russian disinformation in the Middle East," he added.

He said the three options encountering tech platforms that determine this kind of false information are to simply, delete it, or re-label it and flag that the content has been modified.

"There is no societal consensus about what companies should do," Smith added.

The Ukrainian military said on Tuesday (November 7) that it had repelled a Russian assault and was bracing for a new Russian attempt aimed at key frontline town Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine. Russia is dug in along the 1000 kilometre (600-mile) long frontline in eastern Ukraine after its initial attempts of marching on Kyiv failed in early days of the Ukraine war.

Ukraine has not made any significant progress in its counteroffensive which was initially expected to yield rapid results. The counteroffensive was launched in the eastern and southern parts of the country in June.

Ukraine's General Staff has now said that Ukrainian forces had repelled 15 attacks near Kupiansk and 18 attacks near Maryinka.

Russia has made fresh attempts to take Avdiivka since mid-October. The Ukrainian army has said that nine Russian attacks were repelled.

Vitaliy Barabash, head of Avdiivka's military administration, has said that several days of rain means that a fresh Russian advance is not immediately expected.

"We've had nearly a week of heavy rain," he told the public broadcaster Suspilne. "The terrain is too difficult and equipment cannot move."

The official added that the Russians have been shelling the coking plant in the town.

The village of Avdiivka has become somewhat of a symbol of Ukrainian resistance in the face of Russian attacks. The village is seen as a key point and a gateway to areas in the east that Ukraine aims to take back. Donetsk is just 20 kilometres from Avdiivka.

Barabash said that only six people remain in Avdiivka which had a pre-war population of 32,000. The last sixteen workers who were keeping the coking plant working have also been evacuated.

The six people who remain, apart from troops, are two doctors and four nurses.

Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has alleged that Russian soldiers killed a Georgian national along frontline between Russia-backed South Ossetia and Georgian government-held territory.
