“Any movement towards Israel’s withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza requires consideration for Israel’s very real security needs,” Richard Visek, acting legal adviser at the US State Department told the court.&nbsp;

He also noted that the UNGA had asked the UN court to opine on the consequences of Israeli occupation prior to Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel.&nbsp;

“We were all reminded of those security needs on October 7, and they persist. Regrettably those needs have been ignored by many of the participants,” Visek added.&nbsp;

He called on the judges to stick to the established UN framework for the two-state solution.&nbsp;

Washington has been “engaging intensively” with Palestinians, Israel, and other states to not only address the current crisis in Gaza but also “a political settlement that will lead to a durable peace in the region that includes lasting security…and a path to Palestinian statehood,” said the acting legal adviser.&nbsp;

He added, “There is broad international support for achieving a negotiated solution to the conflict that will give rise to a Palestinian state.”&nbsp;

Therefore, the court “should not find that Israel is legally obligated to immediately and unconditionally withdraw from occupied territory,” said the US legal adviser.&nbsp;

Notably, the US amid protests and criticism of Israel’s military action in Gaza continues to back Israel, while President Joe Biden’s administration continues to insist on a two-state solution for the region. However, the leaders of the Jewish state do not agree with the same.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Flagrant violation of international law’</h2>

The UN top court also heard from Vladimir Tarabrin, Russia’s ambassador to the Netherlands who spoke about the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza while condemning the October 7 attack on Israel.&nbsp;

He went on to slam Israel’s retaliation to the attack and called it “collective punishment” which cannot be justified. Around 90 per cent of Gazans have been forced to leave their homes and they are living in inhumane conditions, said Tarabrin.&nbsp;

The Russian ambassador said&nbsp;the UN Security Council has agreed that Israeli settlements in the West Bank constitute a “flagrant violation of international law and a major obstacle to the two-state solution and a just and lasting peace”.&nbsp;

The UN top court is hearing arguments from an unprecedented 52 countries on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands that will go on till February 26.&nbsp;

However, the ICJ has been asked not to opine on the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the occupied territories, but many states participating in the hearings have called on Israel to do so.&nbsp;

The 15-judge panel has around six months to issue their opinion on the request.&nbsp;

<h2>What Israel has to say</h2>

Israel, which is not participating in the hearings, said in a written statement that the UN court’s involvement could be harmful to achieving a negotiated settlement.&nbsp;

Amid the ongoing hearing at The Hague, on Wednesday, the Israeli parliament, Knesset, voted to back Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration opposing the “unilateral” creation of a Palestinian state.&nbsp;

Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party said 99 out of the 120 lawmakers voted in support of the declaration, passed earlier this week by the cabinet, rejecting all “international dictates” seeking to push for Palestinian statehood.&nbsp;

Former US president Donald Trump has said Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was a "brave"&nbsp;man who probably should not have returned to his country. Navalny was pronounced dead last week in rather mysterious circumstances, prompting accusations from the Western bloc that President Vladimir Putin had engineered the entire plot to silence an influential voice.&nbsp;

Trump, who has been an admirer of Putin for a long time, commented on Navalny's death without assigning blame to anyone.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Navalny is a very sad situation, and he is a very brave, he was a very brave guy because he went back. He could have stayed away," Trump said during a town hall interview with Fox News in South Carolina.

"And, frankly, he probably would have been a lot better off staying away and talking from outside of the country as opposed to having to go back in, because people thought that could happen and it did happen. And it's a horrible thing," he added.

The Republican leader compared himself to Navalny, implying that both had faced politically motivated prosecutions.&nbsp;

"But it's happening in our country too.&nbsp;We are turning into a communist country in many ways. And if you look at it - I'm the leading candidate. I get indicted."

Trump's fresh statement comes after he took to his Truth Social network on Sunday (Feb 18) and said Navalny's death made&nbsp;him "more aware of what is happening" in the United States.

A former FBI informant, who has been charged with lying regarding the dealings of US President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden in Ukraine, has told investigators that Russian intelligence officials had passed on that information to him.&nbsp;

The claims were made by the informant after his arrest, said the prosecutors in a new court filing on Tuesday (Feb 20), noting that the information was false.

Prosecutors also claimed that Alexander Smirnov has been “actively peddling new lies that could impact US elections” after he met with Russian spies late last year.&nbsp;

Smirnov has said that he has “extensive and extremely recent” contacts with foreign intelligence officials, said the prosecutors in the filing.&nbsp;

FBI officials said that he had claimed earlier about having longstanding and extensive contacts with Russian spies, which include individuals he said were command Russian assassins abroad or high-level intelligence officers.&nbsp;

In the court filing, the federal prosecutors said that Alexander Smirnov accepted that he was arrested by "officials associated with Russian intelligence who were involved in passing a story" regarding President Biden's son, Hunter Biden.

<h2>FBI informant creates&nbsp;false and fictitious record of Bidens</h2>

Smirnov, who was an FBI informant, was arrested last week and has been facing charges of making false statements as well as for creating a false and fictitious record.

On Tuesday (Feb 20), he appeared in a federal court in Nevada for his detention hearing and the arguments from both sides were heard by Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Albregts, who then ordered that Smirnov be released on a personal recognizance bond.

The ruling was against the government which had appealed for the custody of Smirnov in the court.

One of the most prominent jailed Russian opposition politicians, Ilya Yashin, on Tuesday (Feb 20) said that he vows to continue fighting for democracy in Russia after learning about the death of his friend and colleague Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. He also accused President Vladimir Putin of killing Navalny while acknowledging that his life was also in the Russian leader’s hands.

“As long as my heart beats in my chest, I will fight tyranny. As long as I live, I will fear no evil,” Yashin said in a post on social media, communicated through his lawyer. He added, “Of course, I understand the risks I face. I’m behind bars. My life is in Putin’s hands and it’s in danger.”

“We shared a common cause and dedicated our lives to making Russia peaceful, free and happy. Now both my friends are dead,” said Yashin.&nbsp;

Navalny’s death has sparked outrage across the world and raised fears for his allies, some of whom are imprisoned. Yashin learned about his friend and ally’s death in his prison near Smolensk in western Russia where he is serving his eight-and-a-half years sentence.&nbsp;

“In Putin’s understanding, this is how power is asserted – through murder, cruelty and demonstrative revenge,” said Yashin blaming Navalny’s death on the Kremlin.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Murdered’</h2>

Yashin, a long-time ally of Navalny and the former head of an opposition party was sentenced in December 2022, months after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

The 40-year-old was sentenced for statements he made about war crimes allegedly committed by Russian forces in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.&nbsp;

Russia passed a law days after sending troops into Ukraine in February 2022 which criminalised “spreading false information” about the country’s armed forces.&nbsp;

“I don’t doubt that he didn’t just die but was murdered, and that the order to kill was given by Putin. His security services had already made an attempt on his life back in 2020, and they now have seen it through,” Yashin wrote to the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail on Monday (Feb 19).

The jailed Russian activist was referring to the time when&nbsp;Navalny was allegedly poisoned by a&nbsp;nerve agent in 2020.&nbsp;

The Russian president has no “no moral or legal limitations” and each of their lives is in danger, he added. “I understand that. However, it doesn’t change anything for me. I find it to be beneath my dignity to be scared of a thug,” said Yashin.&nbsp;

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to say how the Russian president reacted to his main opponent’s death.&nbsp;

"Our soldiers performed their military duty with dignity, did everything possible to destroy the best Russian military units and inflicted significant losses on the enemy," he added.

Kremlin has claimed Avdiivka to be part of Russia since a 2022 annexation that remains unrecognised by nearly all United Nations members. In July 2014, the region briefly fell into the hands of pro-Russian separatists before returning to Ukrainian control.

Prior to the war, the city housed around 30,000 inhabitants but since then, most of the houses have been destroyed and fewer than 1,000 residents remain, per local officials.&nbsp;

"Navalny felt bad after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness. Medical staff arrived immediately and an ambulance team was called. Resuscitation measures were carried out which did not yield positive results. Paramedics confirmed the death of the convict. The causes of death are being established," the statement said.&nbsp;

Russia's Investigative Committee said that it had launched a probe into Navalny's death.

After the news of the 47-year-old's death broke, Navalny's press secretary Kira Yarmysh said that their team had no confirmation of this yet.

The exposes that he shared on his official YouTube channel, grabbed millions of views and prompted thousands of Russians to stage protests in the country.

Hungary Prime Minister Victor Orban said on Saturday (Feb 17) that Hungary was "on course" towards ratifying Sweden's NATO bid this month. Hungary remains last holdout before Sweden can join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Orban was delivering state-of-the-nation address when he spoke about the issue.

"The good news is that our current dispute with Sweden is moving towards a conclusion," Orban said in his state-of-the-nation address.

"Together with the Swedish PM, we have taken important steps in order to rebuild trust," he said. He did not elaborate more on this point.

The Hungarian parliament is due to reconvene on February 26.

Hungary may ratify Sweden’s NATO bid this month, hints PM Orban

The US has intelligence of Russian nuclear capabilities in space which could threaten satellites, a report in the New York Times has claimed. The&nbsp;intel has been briefed to Congress and key US allies with some lawmakers demanding that President Joe Biden's administration declassify the information.&nbsp;

Citing unnamed sources, the report claimed that Russia's potential deployment of a nuclear anti-satellite weapon in space&nbsp;could&nbsp;knock out US military&nbsp;communications and reconnaissance capabilities from above.&nbsp;

The threat becomes even more pertinent as Washington does not have the capability to&nbsp;counter such a weapon and defend its satellites, the report added. The US flirted with the technology but never fully deployed it while Russia has continued to develop its space-based capabilities for decades.&nbsp;

If Russia does indeed deploy the weapon, it might suggest President Vladimir Putin was willing to abandon the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which bans all orbital nuclear weapons.

Notably, Russia exited the&nbsp;Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), a global treaty that bans all physical testing of nuclear warheads, last year. Shortly after the exit, Moscow conducted drills, accessing its capability to stage a nuclear attack in "response to an enemy strike".&nbsp;

After the intel was shared,&nbsp;head of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner urged President Biden to come public with the information.&nbsp;

"The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has made available to all Members of Congress information concerning a serious national security threat," said Turner.&nbsp;

"I am requesting that President Biden declassify all information relating to this threat so that Congress, the Administration, and our allies can openly discuss the actions necessary to respond to this threat," he added.&nbsp;

Shortly after, ABC News reported that the threat was associated with Russia and its intentions to place nuclear weapons in space. "I hope that soon they will be effectively used as methods of individual therapy," Putin added, although he did not specify which type pf cancer the proposed vaccines would target.&nbsp;

While a number of countries have been working to develop cancer vaccines, it is the first time that any state of head has made such a bold claim.&nbsp;

In the UK, the Tory government last year signed an agreement with&nbsp;Germany-based BioNTech to launch clinical trials providing "personalised cancer treatments", aiming to reach 10,000 patients by 2030.

Meanwhile, US pharma giants Moderna and&nbsp;Merck &amp; Co, during the mid-stage study of a cancer vaccine said it cut the&nbsp;chance of recurrence or death from melanoma - the most deadly skin cancer - by half after three years of treatment.

Russia developing a vaccine for cancer should not come as a surprise. During the coronavirus pandemic, Moscow developed the Sputnik vaccine which showed encouraging efficacy results when administered&nbsp;to the general public.&nbsp;

“If we are not prepared, the likelihood (of a military Russian attack) would be much higher than without any preparation,” Rosin added.

Russian envoy to India, Denis Alipov on Saturday (Feb 10) stated that the United States was making attempts to threaten Moscow's relationship with New Delhi via sanctions even though his country continues to be India's "reliable and time-tested friend".

"In India, Russia enjoys a solid reputation as a reliable, sincere, well-intentioned, time-tested friend. Such an image was initially shaped due to the major contribution of the USSR to Indian socio-economic development, and it largely persists to this day," Alipov said during an interview with news agency RT.

"US officials who come here do not hesitate to directly state that they are pursuing the goal of tearing New Delhi away from Moscow. They are even making threats with secondary sanctions. Some Indian partners are forced to exercise caution, sometimes, frankly speaking, excessively, but there are also a significant number of those for whom such an approach is unacceptable." he added.

The Russian envoy, stressing upon the strong bilateral relationship, stated that the New Delhi-Moscow ties, unlike the Western allies, have never "conditioned cooperation on politics" nor did the two sides ever meddle in each other's domestic affairs.

"Our ties continue to steadily expand in a wide range of areas according to our converging national interests. But unlike our Western partners, we have never conditioned cooperation on politics, have not interfered in domestic affairs, and have always maintained mutually respectful and trusted relationships. Therefore, even now we mainly see a growing desire to keep working together and finding ways to overcome well-known impediments caused by destructive unilateral approaches," said&nbsp;Alipov.

"It should be noted that over the recent years, the number of such contacts has increased manifold, and they are becoming more and more meaningful, including distributing information detailing the economic and investment potential and promising areas for interaction. It is indicative that the current bilateral trade turnover, which at the end of 2023 may exceed $60 billion, is several times higher than the pre-sanctions figures," he added.

Alipov also urged for immediate reforms of the United Nations and its agencies whilst making a strong case for India's inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

"We are of the view that India as a permanent member of the Security Council could make a significant contribution to promoting balance as well as an agenda focused on the interests of the world majority, primarily the countries of the Global South," the Russian envoy said.

Russia and India have had a strong strategic alliance based on similar interests and historical ties for decades now.

As per the Russian news agency, large-scale defense cooperation lies at the heart of the alliance with both countries participating in cooperative military exercises, co-development of cutting-edge military platforms, and technology transfers.&nbsp;

'US trying to threaten India-Russia relationship with sanctions,' says Russian Envoy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that&nbsp;former US president Bill Clinton told him Russia could be welcomed into NATO, the western world's military alliance.&nbsp;

“At a meeting here in the Kremlin with the outgoing President Bill Clinton, right here in the next room, I said to him, I asked him: ‘Bill, do you think if Russia asked to join NATO, do you think it would happen?’ Suddenly he said, ‘You know, it’s interesting. Putin tells Tucker Carlson Bill Clinton agreed that Russia could join NATO

Russia has turned to India, a country that produces significant amount of bananas and other fruits, to&nbsp;meet the demand&nbsp;within the country, said a report. This has happened after Russia stopped import from Ecuador after not being thrilled that the latter sent Russian weapons and hardware to the US. Russia has since been looking for suppliers of not only bananas, but papayas, guavas, mangoes and pineapples.

A report in The Times of India has said that the first shipment of Indian bananas reached Russia in January and another is expected to reach this month.

"The volume of exports of Indian bananas to the Russian market will increase," said Russian agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor as quoted in the report.

Although it is angry at Ecuador for geopolitical reason, Russia has obviously not said so officially. But it has been seen in past that Russia restricts food imports from countries it disagrees with.

Zaluzhny also remains popular in Ukraine as under him Ukrainian forces retook almost half of Russia-occupied regions in Ukraine in 2022. Additionally, polling surveys, as per Reuters, put the public’s trust in the top general at over 90 per cent.&nbsp;

Emergency workers worked overnight to look for survivors in the rubble of what remained of the shattered Adriatic Restaurant on Moskovska Street, where according to the Russian officials, a bakery had been set up for civilians.&nbsp;

Leonid Pasechnik, the Russian-installed head of the Luhansk region said that the bakery was crowded with civilians when it was struck. The Russian emergency ministry said 10 people had been pulled from the rubble alive.&nbsp;

“Search operations continue on the site of the collapsed bakery...28 people, including a child, have died,” the Russian emergency situations ministry said in a post on Telegram. According to officials, 18 men, nine women and one child were among those killed.&nbsp;

Additionally, four more people were in an “extremely grave condition,” said the ministry. Ukraine is yet to comment on the attack and allegations by Russia.&nbsp;

Pasechnik has declared a day of mourning in the Russian-held region and vowed retaliation against Ukraine.&nbsp;

During his visit, Zelensky also announced the appointment of the mayor of an occupied city who was once abducted by Russia as the new head of the country’s southern embattled Zaporizhzhia region, said his office on Sunday (Feb 4).&nbsp;

“The head of state introduced the newly appointed head of the Zaporizhzhia regional state administration Ivan Federov, who has been the mayor of the now temporarily occupied Melitopol since December 2020 and was in Russian captivity,” said the Ukrainian president’s office in a statement.&nbsp;

The attack, as per the news agency AFP, was "organised" by Kyiv's SBU security service.

"Last night, the air defence and electronic jamming repelled an attack by drones in the Volgograd region's Kalachyovsky and Zakanalye districts," governor Andrei Bocharov said on Telegram.

"A fire started at the Volgograd refinery after one of the downed drones fell," he said, adding that the fire service had already brought the blaze under control by the start of the morning.

However, Bocharov said that no one was hurt in the incident.

Russian emergency services later told local media that the blaze had been put out.

"The fire at the refinery in Volgograd was 'organised' by SBU drones," a source in the Ukranian defence sector told AFP. &nbsp;

Russian energy giant Lukoil, which operates the refinery, says on its website that it is "the biggest producer of oil products in the federal South district", which covers eight regions of southwest Russia.

Ukrainian forces claimed that they blasted a Russian missile boat, which was a part of the Black Sea Fleet, in a targeted operation which took place close to the Russian-occupied Crimea.&nbsp;

The military intelligence claimed that the small warship, Ivanovets, received "direct hits to the hull" overnight, after which the ship sank.&nbsp;

The video footage of the attack was released by the Ukrainian forces which purportedly captures the moment of the impact which was followed by a massive explosion, as per media reports. &nbsp;

Meanwhile, taking to Telegram, a Russian military blogger "Voenkor Kotenok" wrote that the boat sank after it was struck three times by naval drones.&nbsp;

In the Ukrainian video, several identifiable features on the vessel were displayed that align with those of the Tarantul, which was also known as Project 12411-a missile boat that was class utilised by Russian and other navies. &nbsp;

These features of the vessel include the arrangement of the mast and sensors above the primary superstructure, along with a sizable radar dome which is located on the bridge.

The Russian National Guard, a squad which is also known as Rosgvardia, is set to incorporate three ex-Wagner assault detachments into its very first volunteer corps formation, said the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The MoD, in its customary intelligence update on social media platform X, shared that Russian President Vladimir Putin had signed a law on 25 December last year, permitting the Russian National Guard to create its own volunteer formations. Rosgvardia is often referred to as Putin’s “private army”.

“Rosgvardia will likely deploy its new volunteer detachments to Ukraine and Africa. Rosgvardia is reportedly offering volunteers six-month contracts for service in Ukraine, and nine-month contracts for service in Africa," read the statement.&nbsp;

"The incorporation of former Wagner assault detachments into Rosgvardia’s volunteer corps highly likely indicates that Wagner has been successfully subordinated to Rosgvardia, increasing the Russian state’s command and control over the Wagner group,” it added.

A report by The Moscow Times, on Thursday (Feb 1) citing human rights group Egida said that a woman was jailed for wearing rainbow earrings. The woman was identified as Anastasia Yershova in court documents.

According to the report, the police tasked with combating “extremism” detained the woman after a group of “aggressive people” approached Yershova and her friend at a local cafe and filmed them.&nbsp;

The woman was called to the police station after the man who had filmed the incident posted it online.&nbsp;

The video was also shared by ultra-conservative bloggers, according to The Moscow Times and showed the unidentified man threatening to hand them over to the police for wearing a Ukrainian flag pin and rainbow earrings.

As per court documents, Yershova was questioned by police and then brought before a judge who cited the ruling handed down by the Russian Supreme Court in Moscow on November 30.&nbsp;

At the time, the apex court judge ruled that “the international LGBT public movement and its subdivisions” were extremist, and issued a “ban on its activities on the territory of Russia”. The ban took effect immediately.&nbsp;

Additionally, a trial against a photographer in Saratov in southwestern will also resume next week after she allegedly posted images of rainbow flags on Instagram, reported independent Russian news outlet Mediazona.&nbsp;

The woman who was reportedly identified as 33-year-old photographer Inna Mosina, went to trial on Tuesday (Jan 30) and denied the charges against her.&nbsp;

According to The Moscow Times, the rainbow flag was posted on her Instagram page a month before the Supreme Court ruling went into force.

On Tuesday, during the hearing, she told the Leninsky District Court that the rainbow flags on her Instagram page are “creative solutions” and do not represent LGBTQ+ symbols, reported Mediazona.
