He constructed his innings perfectly, resolutely defending outside the off stump and taking runs off anything loose, with Moeen's off-spin often a target.

Having taken 145 balls to reach the slowest half-century of his Test career, Sharma expertly upped his tempo and needed just 59 more deliveries to go to a 204-ball hundred completed with a magnificent straight six off spinner Moeen Ali.

"You can't just come and play shots, especially when you are opening in England," said Sharma who, despite not being renowned for his patience, batted for nearly six hours.

"The most pleasing thing was that I was able to play 250 balls (256 in total)," he said. "We do know things get a little easier when you spend time in the middle and see what the bowlers are doing and get the feel of the situation.

"The four Test matches I've batted (in this series), the biggest takeaway is spending time in the middle. The runs will come."

India batting coach Vikram Rathour on Sunday said Rohit Sharma needs to be a "little more selective" with his shots after the opener fell to a pull shot for the second time in the Test series against England.

"There will be analysis, of course every-time they get out, we will be having a talk, what happened and what they were thinking while batting or while they played that shot,"&nbsp;Rathour said at the virtual post-day press conference after the fourth day's play.

India in their second innings were at 181/6 when stumps were drawn on day four, leading by 154 runs.

"As far Rohit is concerned, I think he has made it clear that that is the shot which fetches him runs, that is the shot where he gets runs with, so he is going to play those shots and we are backing him to play those shots, only thing he needs to do is to be a little-more selective, with what to play and when to play".

According to Rathour, skipper Virat Kohli, who was dismissed on 20, was undone by a lapse in concentration.

"Kohli, I don't think there was any issue, it was just a lapse in concentration today, where his bat went to the ball, which he shouldn't have played and nothing more, I don't think anything old (is) coming back,"&nbsp;the batting coach said.

Rathour said that the team needs to set a target close to the 200-run mark.

"You are right, this will be a typical fifth-day wicket of a Test match, where the ball will go up and down and is also turning, like we saw. So, again like I said earlier, if we can take the target near 200 runs, then it won't be easy for England,"&nbsp;he said.

"Like (Ravindra) Jadeja bowled in the first innings, he was accurate, if he gets a turn from there, he can create problems for the batsmen, and our pace attack is bowling well.

"If the ball stays up and down, like we are seeing when the ball is hard, then, if we can add 30-40 runs more and take 1-2 early England wickets, then there will be pressure on them,"&nbsp;he added.

I know that when I'm facing the bowler, you have to be ready. There is no such thing as extra time or he has got more time. Every batsman is challenged when he is facing the bowler, so you just have to be on top of your game, mindset to come out on top for that particular delivery."

"There is no time. Those guys are quick enough to rattle you. Yes, technically you can say that he plays the ball late, but there is no such thing as 'he has got less time, more time'. I don't think so."

After the lunch break, Rohit and Rahul continued from where they left and brought up the 100-run opening stand in the 33rd over of the innings. Rohit was the aggressor of the two and was marching ahead to another century in the longest format.

However, he was not able to register a century as he was sent back to the pavilion by James Anderson in the 44th over and this brought an end to the 126-run opening partnership. Rohit got out after scoring 83 runs. This brought Cheteshwar Pujara (9) to the middle and he once again failed to get going and was dismissed by Anderson. In the end, Kohli and Rahul ensured that India entered the tea break with eight wickets in hand.
