As per the student publication Cherwell, sustained "demands for a more culturally sensitive name" which combats "negative stereotypes and portrayals of Asian people, often through a colonialist lens" triggered the shift.

Despite the fact that theorist Edward Said originally criticised the term "oriental" in 1978, a large portion of the general population is ignorant of its contentious nature.

"Many considered the word 'oriental' to be inappropriate and, while the change will not affect what the faculty researches and teaches, it does better reflect the breadth and diversity of the academic activity in the faculty," he added.

The former New Zealand batter has made some shocking revelations stating that cricket remains "a pretty white sport in New Zealand" and that he endured racist comments which were usually considered "banter" by those involved.

Taylor, who announced his retirement from international cricket in April this year, has been an epitome of grit and unwavering commitment in New Zealand cricket. One of the most dedicated players ever, Taylor was an absolute team man and won several matches for his country with his batting heroics across all three formats.

In his autobiography 'Black &amp; White', the former New Zealand batter, who has Samoan heritage, revealed it felt like he was 'a brown face in a vanilla line-up' in the New Zealand cricket team. Taylor also alleged he was often mistaken as a Maori or an Indian by a few in New Zealand cricket. Maori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand.&nbsp;

"Cricket in New Zealand is a pretty white sport. For much of my career, I've been an anomaly, a brown face in a vanilla line-up. That has its challenges, many of which aren't readily apparent to your team-mates or the cricketing public,"&nbsp;Taylor wrote in his book, an extract of which was published by the New Zealand Herald.

"Given that the Polynesian community is dramatically under-represented in the game, it's probably no surprise that people sometimes assume I'm Māori or Indian," he added.

Taylor also revealed how he had to put up with comments of racist nature in the New Zealand dressing room and that they were often slipped under the carpet as 'banter'. The former New Zealand batter said he would hesitate in calling out the individuals for their racist comments in fear that he would be accused of playing the 'race card' over so-called 'harmless banter'.

"In many ways, dressing-room banter is the barometer. A team-mate used to tell me, "You're half a good guy, Ross, but which half is good? You don't know what I'm referring to." I was pretty sure I did. Other players also had to put up with comments that dwelt on their ethnicity," Taylor wrote in his book.

"In all probability, a Pakeha [white New Zealander] listening to those sorts of comments would think, "Oh, that's okay, it's just a bit of banter." But he's hearing it as white person and it's not directed at people like him. So, there's no pushback; no one corrects them. Then the onus falls on the targets.

"You wonder if you should pull them up but worry that you'll create a bigger problem or be accused of playing the race card by inflating harmless banter into racism. It's easier to develop a thick skin and let it slide, but is that the right thing to do?," he added.

The father-son duo of Greg McMichael, 66, and Travis McMichael, 36, who chased and shot dead Black jogger Ahmaud Arbery have been given life sentences on Monday (August 9) for a federal hate crime.

The McMichaels, who are white, were found guilty of murder of Arbery after chasing him through a neighbourhood in Georgia. US district court judge Lisa Godbey Wood said the two had gone through a "fair trial" for the murder of 25-year-old Arbery. They are among the three defendants accused of the crime. Their neighbour, William "Roddie" Bryan, 52, received 35 years in jail for his involvement in the federal crime.

On February 23, 2020, the accused, holding firearms chased after Arbery, who was passing in front of their homes. Bryan also jumped into the chase and captured on camera how the duo shot Arbery. The duo, who had used a pickup van to go after Arbery, later informed the police they thought he was a thief. However, during the investigation, Arbery’s family said that he was on his routine jog, was unarmed, and had committed no offences.

Wood scheduled back-to-back hearings to sentence each defendant separately. Bryan apologised in court for what happened to the victim.

Arbery’s parents had previously spoken in court about their grief over losing their son and the damage caused by the racism involved in his murder. His mother said that she is very thankful for the decision made. Arbery’s father said that McMichaels killed his son because he was a Black man and people like him deserve no mercy.

The McMichaels requested the judge&nbsp;to transfer them from a state jail to a federal jail as they believed it would not be safe for them in the Georgia prison system. However, the judge denied the request of the three defendants to choose a federal jail. Arbery’s family said that a federal jail would not be harsh enough for the defendants.

Arbery’s murder formed a part of a larger national conversation about racial injustice and the deaths of Black individuals without cause, including Breonna Taylor in Kentucky and George Floyd in Minneapolis. The US Justice department also filed federal charges in these two cases.<o:p></o:p>

Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump said that this decision has now marked a milestone in the journey and will be a turning point in the civil rights movement.

Ahmaud Arbery murder: Father, son get life in prison for federal hate crime

Muslim communities across the US are experiencing a surge of fear following a spate of murders of Muslim males in New Mexico. On August 8, the fourth victim was identified by authorities, who have not ruled out a connection between the killings of many Muslim men in Albuquerque. Authorities have stated that the victims' race and religion were common factors in three of the murders the previous week. The police said they thought that Friday’s murder could be related to the three killings of Muslim men who belonged to South Asia, Al Jazeera reported.

In the nine months prior to the death of Naeem Hussian on Friday (August 5), three other Muslim men were killed in ambush shootings. Due to the killings, Muslims in the US are now afraid because they have experienced prejudice, discrimination, and violence. Hussain was a 25-year-old man from Pakistan and passed away shortly after two other Pakistanis, Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, and Aftab Hussein, 41. The first instance that took place was the death of a 62-year-old Afghani man, Mohammad Ahmadi, in November last year.

The independent review SportScotland last year after former Scotland spinner and the country's second-highest wicket-taker of all time in ODI cricket Majid Haq alleged he faced racism and discrimination during his playing days.

The independent review was conducted by an organisation named Plan4Sport and it found that Cricket Scotland's governance and leadership practices were "institutionally racist". The Cricket Scotland board apologised and resigned a day before the findings of the report were made public.

During the review, several former and current cricketers, including Haq and his former teammate Qasim Sheikh were questioned. Haq and Sheikh had together alleged they were treated indifferently due to the colour of their skin and faced racial abuse during their playing days.

The deafening silence speaks volumes: Majid Haq slams Scotland players after racism report

The governance and leadership practices of Cricket Scotland have been found to be "institutionally racist", the organisation leading the independent review of the governing body said on Monday. 
The study confirmed there were 448 examples that demonstrated institutional racism, with 62% of survey respondents saying they had experienced, seen or had reported to them incidents of racism, inequalities or discrimination.

Plan4Sport, commissioned by SportScotland, was tasked with leading the review in December last year and over the course of the last few months the body engaged with over 1,000 people at all levels of Scottish cricket. "Our view is clear: the governance and leadership practices of Cricket Scotland have been institutionally racist," Louise Tideswell, managing director of Plan4Sport, said in a statement.

"Over the review period we have seen the bravery of so many people coming forward to share their stories which had clearly impacted on their lives. "The reality is that the leadership of the organisation failed to see the problems and, in failing to do so, enabled a culture of racially aggravated micro-aggressions to develop. 
"It didn`t address the lack of diversity at board and staff level and missed the need to develop transparent reporting, investigation and case management processes to address incidents of racism and discrimination." 
The board of Cricket Scotland had apologised and resigned on Sunday, a day before the report was published, citing that the resolution of issues and overhaul required was "unachievable" within the proposed timescale.

TREATED DIFFERENTLY 
The review was commissioned after allegations were made by one of the country`s all-time leading wicket-takers, Majid Haq, who said Cricket Scotland was "institutionally racist". Haq`s former team mate Qasim Sheikh also spoke out about abuse he had suffered, with both players saying they were treated differently due to the colour of their skin.

The allegations came after Azeem Rafiq told a British parliamentary committee in November about the discrimination he faced while at Yorkshire, with the spinner also saying the sport in England was "institutionally racist". "These are no longer allegations of racism but a total vindication of Majid Haq, Qasim Sheikh and all those who bravely came forward to give evidence," said Aamer Anwar, the lawyer representing the two players.

"They welcome the findings and recommendations and grateful to those at Plan4Sport for such a comprehensive and robust investigation, it was indeed the first time they were treated with compassion." 
Anwar added that the board`s resignation was welcome but resigning before the publication of the report meant there was nobody to answer for their failures.

The review`s other findings included a lack of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) or anti-racist training for board, staff, volunteers, players, coaches or umpires as well as no mechanism in place for handling racist incidents. They added that those who raised issues were "sidelined and ignored".

One of the recommendations said Cricket Scotland must be placed in "special measures" by SportScotland until at least October 2023 and new board members be appointed no later than Sept. 30 this year. "The diversity of board members should be a minimum of 40% men and 40% women, ensuring that a minimum of 25% of the total board makeup come from of Black, South-East Asian, or other mixed or multiple ethnic groups," it added. Another recommendation said all investigations resulting from referrals, of which there is a backlog, must be "expedited by a third party with the appropriate expertise".

 
WATERSHED MOMENT 
Cricket Scotland interim CEO Gordon Arthur issued a "heartfelt apology" to all victims of racism and discrimination, saying the report was a watershed moment for the game in Scotland. "We recognise the impact this will have had on individuals and their families. We hope the report provides them with some reassurance that their voices have been heard, and we are sorry this did not happen sooner," Arthur said. 
"It`s clear that significant cultural change must happen and it must happen quickly. The immediate priority must be to get the independent referral process agreed and implemented so the investigations into the referrals can start."

Stewart Harris, the chief executive of SportScotland, said some of the findings in the report are "deeply concerning and in some cases shocking", describing it as a wake-up call for Scottish sport. "As the national agency for sport, we will work with and support Cricket Scotland to help change the culture of Scottish cricket and that must now be the focus," Harris said. "There has been some progress in recent months but we need to see more steps being taken to address the issues raised and importantly that includes the referrals."

The review was conducted following Scotland cricketer Majid Haq's allegations of racism and discrimination last year. Haq's claims were supported by his former teammate&nbsp;Qasim Sheikh.

SportScotland had ordered an investigation last year following Haq's revelations about the prevalent racism in Scottish cricket. An organisation named&nbsp;Plan4Sport was appointed to conduct an independent review of&nbsp;the matter and their investigation has found Scotland cricket to be&nbsp;'institutionally racist'.

"The fundamental claim at the start of this was about institutional racism at the heart of cricket. This review concludes that it's very much the case," a source was quoted as saying by Sky News.

As per a report in the BBC, an interim report on the investigation was released by Plan4 Sport in April this year where the organisation revealed it spoke to over 200 people, who agreed to provide evidence on racism in Scotland cricket. Some referrals and allegations were also reported to the Scotland Police for appropriate action.

The final reports and findings of the investigation conducted by Plan4Sport are expected to be made public on Monday (July 25). While Scotland Cricket has refused to make any comments on the alleged findings of the review, the board has offered apologies to those affected by racism in Scotland cricket.

"Cricket should be a welcoming place for everyone and not somewhere that racism or any form of discrimination takes place. The Cricket Scotland Board is truly sorry to everyone who has experienced racism in cricket in Scotland," a spokesperson of Cricket Scotland was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has been involved in contributing to the review, however the board is not in a position to comment on the independent review's report as we will not see it until it is published publicly on Monday," he added.

Majid Haq, ho played for Scotland U-13, U-15 and U-19 sides before making his international debut for the national side in June 2004, made a total of 75 appereances for the Scotland senior team in ODIs and T20Is. He picked up 60 wickets for Scotland in 54 ODI matches and 28 wickets in 21 T20Is. He played his final game for Scotland in March 2015.

The speedster, who has already won South Africa's cricketer of the year award and earned two IPL champions medals in his relatively short career, stated that it was his parents' experience with racism that opened his eye.&nbsp;

Talking about how his father, a petrol attendant, was treated differently for the colour of his skin, Ngidi said, “My dad was a petrol attendant and a white customer wouldn’t even put the money in his hand. He just threw it on the floor,"

“I don’t think I’ll ever lose that story. It was just so degrading. For my dad to go on in life as if everything’s fine took a lot of courage but this is how they raised me. The stories they shared were eye-opening and painful to hear, because those scars never really close up.” he further added in the interview with The Guardian.&nbsp;

Despite his parents facing acute racism, Ngidi believes that he still does not assume anything about a person, unless they show their racist side to him.&nbsp;

“My parents grew up in an era where racism was rife but apartheid was over when I was born. They wanted me to make the most of that new start and they raised me never to judge a book by its cover, and I live by that today. Until someone shows me that side of themselves, I will never assume that is who they are.”

Ngidi was one of the first voices to speak amongst the South African camp in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder in Minneapolis, USA, two years ago. At the time, several former South African cricketers had called out Ngidi and tried to silence his voice.&nbsp;

An investigation has been launched into allegations of racist abuse aimed at Indian fans during the fourth day of the fifth Test between India and England at Edgbaston, the ECB and Warwickshire County Cricket Club said. Several Indian fans took to Twitter to report the racist behaviour they endured during the fourth day's play on Monday night. They claimed that some British fans hurled racial taunts at them.

Former Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq, whose testimony to a British parliamentary committee last year led to an investigation into claims of institutional racism at Yorkshire and resulted in major reforms, retweeted some of the social media posts describing the racist behaviour. "Disappointing to read," he wrote.

The official Edgbaston Twitter account responded to Rafiq's tweet saying: "We're incredible sorry to read this and do not condone this behaviour in anyway. We'll be investigating this ASAP."

Warwickshire later released a statement, stating they are investigating the incident. "I'm gutted by these reports as we're working hard to make Edgbaston a safe, welcoming environment for all," Stuart Cain, Chief Executive at Edgbaston said.

"Having seen the initial tweets, I've spoken personally to the gentleman who raised them and we're now speaking to the stewards in this area to establish what happened.

"Nobody should be subject to any form of abuse at Edgbaston. So, once we've got all the facts, we will make sure this issue is addressed swiftly," the statement added.

Carrying “Black Lives Matter” placards, hundreds of protesters hit the streets in Ohio state’s Akron city, US, after police released the body-cam footage showing the moments leading up to the fatal police shooting of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black motorist.

Protests have been taking place around the city since the fatal shooting took place last week. But Sunday’s agitation, which marked the fourth day, was the most intense following the release of the footage.

The authorities appealed for calm as a crowd marched to City Hall carrying banners with slogans such as “Justice for Jayland” and "we are done dying" reverberated throughout the streets well into the evening.

According to reports, some protesters blocked traffic in the Highland Square neighbourhood as well as West Akron.

Fearing potential unrest, authorities in the city of 190,000 people moved snowplows and other heavy equipment near the police department to serve as a barrier.

Two videos were released on Sunday—one that was a compilation of body-camera footage, body-cam still frames and voiceover, and another of the complete body-cam footage of the entire chase and shooting.

The voiceover explained that Walker did not stop and drove off. Police engaged in a car chase and said a shot had been fired from Walker's vehicle, reports AFP.

All of the officers at the scene opened fire on Walker, shooting multiple times in rapid succession.

The report said a substitute player from Egypt was the most abused player at the AFCON finals this year. "Our duty is to protect football and that starts with the players who bring so much joy and happiness to all of us by their exploits on the field of play," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement on Saturday.

A landmark report into racism by the British Medical Association (BMA), a professional association and trade union representing and negotiating on behalf of all doctors in the UK has revealed a profession in danger of a major exodus of doctors of ethnic minority backgrounds, due to persistent and intolerable levels of racism faced at a personal and institutional level.&nbsp;

Nearly one-third of doctors surveyed have considered leaving the National Health Service (NHS) or have already left within the past two years due to race discrimination, with 42% of Black and 41% of Asian doctors, in particular, having considered leaving or having left.

As quoted by The Guardian, Prof Anton Emmanuel, the head of workforce race equality standard at NHS England, says, “No one should experience racism, discrimination or prejudice at work, it is completely unacceptable and NHS organisations should take a zero-tolerance approach to all and any form of discrimination.”

Emmanuel said “decisive actions” had recently been taken to address inequalities in the NHS and progress was being made, but he also conceded that “we know there is still more work to do”.

BMA report reveals one-third of doctors surveyed leaving NHS due to racism

Yorkshire County Cricket Club and a number of individuals have been charged following an investigation into racism claims made by former player Azeem Rafiq, the England and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday, without naming the people in question.

"After one year, it should become clear whether, and how, these smart technologies have helped to identify racism and discrimination and to identify those responsible," it said in a statement.

The methods at the three stadiums will vary.&nbsp; At PSV, which is closely liked with Dutch technology giant Philips, cameras and sound equipment are to be used to measure fan engagement at matches "with feedback directly to the fans to motivate them and sing along."

"The reason (for rising cases in colleges) is that COVID-19 numbers are not under control in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala and such states. When students from North India come to these colleges, COVID-19 cases spread through them, as a whole cluster. And then, I have visited the relevant institutions" he said.&nbsp;

He was also seen singling out a large number of students from other states and North Indian states when referring to the student population of educational institutions in Chennai.&nbsp;

The researchers used artificial intelligence to analyse the social media accounts of 80 footballers and 80 basketball players with the athletes accounting for a total of 200 million followers on social media. It was found that during the period of May to September 2021, the study flagged 1,558 abusive posts sent from 1,455 different accounts to the players across football leagues and the NBA.

The players were targeted by the fans for changing clubs, due to rivalries between teams, and their own poor performances on the field among others. 85% of abuse directed towards the football players was homophobic or racist in nature while 74% of the abuse thrown at basketball players was homophobic or racist.

“This report highlights that some of the most abused players were targeted as they changed clubs whilst others saw abuse in relation to on-field issues,“ said David Aganzo, president of FIFPRO.

“While the analysts also recognized players being targeted due to club rivalries or perceptions of their character, we must seek better cooperation amongst all stakeholders in the game to better protect those people that create the game in the first place," he added.
