"I'm sorry for the hurt (Rafiq's) gone through. Time I don't think can ever be a healer in the situation that he's gone through," Vaughan said in an interview with BBC Breakfast.

"But hopefully, time can be a way of us making sure that Yorkshire County Cricket Club never goes through this situation again and never puts themselves in a position of denial that they treated a player so badly.

"It hurts deeply, hurts me that a player has gone through so much and be treated so badly at the club I love. I have to take some responsibility for that because I played for Yorkshire County Cricket Club for 18 years and if in any way shape or form, I'm responsible for any of his hurt, I apologise for that," he added.

"Change is required as a matter of urgency, but we also recognise that sustained action is required over months and years to achieve fundamental and long lasting progress. This must begin today."

The ECB said it would set up a new anti-discrimination unit within sixth months and also vowed to remove "structural and cultural barriers" in their elite talent pathways.

"For cricket truly to `connect communities and improve lives` -- our stated aim at the ECB -- we must start by accepting that not enough has happened to make our game better" ECB chief executive Tom Harrison said.

"That is the only possible reaction to the powerful testimony of Azeem Rafiq and others in recent weeks."

The disparate developments had one thing — or, rather, a person — in common: Ifeoma Ozoma.

Since last year, Ozoma, 29, a former employee of Pinterest, Facebook and Google, has emerged as a central figure among tech whistleblowers. A Yale-educated daughter of Nigerian immigrants, she has supported and mentored tech workers who needed help speaking out, pushed for more legal protections for those employees and urged tech companies and their shareholders to change their whistleblower policies.

She helped inspire and pass the new California law, the Silenced No More Act, which prohibits companies from using nondisclosure agreements to squelch workers who speak up against discrimination in any form. Ozoma also released a website, The Tech Worker Handbook, which provides information on whether and how workers should blow the whistle.

“It’s really sad to me that we still have such a lack of accountability within the tech industry that individuals have to do it” by speaking up, Ozoma said in an interview.

Her efforts — which have alienated at least one ally along the way — are increasingly in the spotlight as restive tech employees take more action against their employers. Last month, Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee, revealed that she had leaked thousands of internal documents about the social network’s harms. (Facebook has since renamed itself Meta.) Apple also recently faced employee unrest, with many workers voicing concerns about verbal abuse, sexual harassment, retaliation and discrimination.

Ozoma is now focused on directly pushing tech companies to stop using nondisclosure agreements to prevent employees from speaking out about workplace discrimination. She has also met with activists and organizations that want to pass legislation similar to the Silenced No More Act elsewhere. And she is constantly in touch with other activist tech workers, including those who have organized against Google and Apple.

Much of Ozoma’s work stems from experience. In June 2020, she and a colleague, Aerica Shimizu Banks, publicly accused their former employer, the virtual pinboard maker Pinterest, of racism and sexism. Pinterest initially denied the allegations but later apologized for its workplace culture. Its workers staged a walkout, and a former executive sued the company over gender discrimination.

“It’s remarkable how Ifeoma has taken some very painful experiences, developed solutions for them and then built a movement around making those solutions a reality,” said John Tye, the founder of Whistleblower Aid, a nonprofit that provides legal support to whistleblowers.

He and Ozoma recently appeared on a webinar to educate people on whistleblower rights.

Meredith Whittaker, a former Google employee who helped organize a 2018 walkout over the company’s sexual harassment policy, added of Ozoma: “She has stuck around and worked to help others blow the whistle more safely.”

Ozoma, who grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, and Raleigh, North Carolina, became an activist after a five-year career in the tech industry. A political science major, she moved to Washington, D.C., in 2015 to join Google in government relations. She then worked at Facebook in Silicon Valley on international policy.

In 2018, Pinterest recruited Ozoma to its public policy team. There, she helped bring Banks on board. They spearheaded policy decisions including ending the promotion of anti-vaccination information and content related to plantation weddings on Pinterest, Ozoma said.

Yet Ozoma and Banks said they faced unequal pay, racist comments and retaliation for raising complaints at Pinterest. They left the company in May 2020. A month later, during the Black Lives Matter protests, Pinterest posted a statement supporting its Black employees.

Ozoma and Banks said Pinterest’s hypocrisy had pushed them to speak out. On Twitter, they disclosed their experiences as Black women at the company, with Ozoma declaring that Pinterest’s statement was “a joke.”

In a statement, Pinterest said it had taken steps to increase diversity.

By speaking out, Ozoma and Banks took a risk. That’s because they broke the nondisclosure agreements they had signed with Pinterest when they left the company. California law, which offered only partial protection, didn’t cover people speaking out about racial discrimination.

Peter Rukin, their lawyer, said he had an idea: What if state law was expanded to ban nondisclosure agreements from preventing people speaking out on any workplace discrimination? Ozoma and Banks soon began working with a California state senator, Connie Leyva, a Democrat, on a bill to do just that. It was introduced in February.

“I’m just so proud of these women for coming forward,” Levya said.

Along the way, Ozoma and Banks fell out. Banks said she no longer spoke with Ozoma because Ozoma had recruited her to Pinterest without disclosing the discrimination there and then excluded her from working on the Silenced No More Act.

“Ifeoma then cut me out of the initiative through gaslighting and bullying,” Banks said.

Ozoma said she had not cut Banks out of the organizing. She added that Banks had “felt left out” because news coverage focused on Ozoma’s role.

Since leaving Pinterest, Ozoma has moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she lives with a flock of chickens she calls the Golden Girls. She also runs a tech equity consulting firm, Earthseed.

Through Earthseed, Ozoma is continuing her work around whistleblowing. She is collaborating with the nonprofit Open MIC and the consulting firm Whistle Stop Capital to stop tech companies from using nondisclosure agreements to keep workers anywhere from coming forward on discrimination.

In September, Ozoma, Whistle Stop Capital and Open MIC, along with the social impact investor Nia Impact Capital, filed a shareholder proposal at Apple. The proposal asked the company to assess the risks associated with the use of concealment clauses for employees who have experienced harassment and discrimination.

Last month, Apple said in a letter that it wouldn’t take action on the proposal, arguing that the company “does not limit employees’ and contractors’ ability to speak freely about harassment, discrimination and other unlawful acts in the workplace.” It declined to comment beyond the letter.

Ozoma also supports and counsels other tech activists. The Tech Worker Handbook website, in part, was designed to help with that. The website has information on how to navigate nondisclosure agreements and how to protect against corporate surveillance or physical threats. Across the top of the site is a slogan: “Preparedness Is Power.” Since it went online Oct. 6, the site has had over 53,000 visitors, Ozoma said.

“I send it to people who are thinking about coming forward,” said Ashley Gjovik, a former activist employee at Apple who has relied on Ozoma for support. When people think about whistleblowing, she added, “their mind won’t go to the places of the personal, digital, security stuff, all of the legal ramifications, how do you even get that story out, the impact on friends and family, the impact on your mental health.”

Last month, Ozoma also got a call from Cher Scarlett, another activist Apple employee who left the company this month. (Scarlett declined to provide her real name for security reasons; she is legally changing her name to Cher Scarlett.) She asked Ozoma how to pass legislation like the Silenced No More Act in her home state, Washington.

Ozoma described the steps she had taken, including working closely with a lawmaker who could write a bill, Scarlett said.

Along with another tech activist, Scarlett then contacted Karen Keiser, a Washington state senator and a Democrat. Keiser now plans to sponsor a bill to expand whistleblower protections when the legislative session starts in January, her office said.

The two of them appear to be in altercation in which the teacher keeps her calm while the student can be heard hurling abuses like 'b****'

The student then can be heard talking to her mom and asks her to speak with the teacher 'because she is black'.&nbsp;

Castleberry Independent School District officials have put out a statement and praised the teacher who kept her calm even in the face of literal assault. The statement said that teacher's handling of the incident was exemplary 'throughout the entirety of the incident even when the situation turned violent and offensive.'

“Harassment, racism and violence against our teachers will not be tolerated at Castleberry ISD, and we will take swift and effective action to protect our teachers so that they can perform their duties and educate students in a safe environment," the statement said.

As per media reports the school will hold an internal investigation into the matter and as physical assault was involved, the matter will be reported to law enforcement authorities as well.

The UK government has launched an investigation after reports emerged that oximeter—which measure blood oxygen levels and are key to assessing COVID-19 patients—works properly only on people with lighter skin.

Health secretary Sajid Javid said he had commissioned a review of the issue after learning that oximeters give less accurate readings for patients with darker skin.

He claimed that there was a racial bias in some medical instruments, saying, “It’s unintentional but it exists.”

“And the reason is that a lot of these medical devices, even some of the drugs, some of the procedures, some of the textbooks, most of them are put together in majority white countries and I think this is a systemic issue around this,” he added.

Asked whether people may have died of COVID-19 as a result of the error, Javid said, “I think possibly yes. I don’t have the full facts.”\

Javid assertions come after NHS England and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said that the pulse oximeters can overestimate the amount of oxygen in the blood.

Britain’s statistics office has found that in the first year of the pandemic, up to March 2021, Black and South Asian people in the UK had higher death rates than their white compatriots, even after factors like occupation and underlying health conditions were taken into account.

But Javid, believes that the issue is not confined to Britain alone, and many similar cases can be discovered in other parts of the world.

He said he had already spoken about the issue to his US counterpart, who was as interested in it as he was.

Sharif, a promising batter back in the day, was told by his senior at Essex that he won't get to play for the first team no matter what. Despite being one of the best performers in one of the seasons, he was not promoted to the first team and didn't get a chance to play. 'You will never play in the first team' - was the only reason ever given to him for his non-selection, alleged the former Essex cricketer.

"I was told 'No matter what you do, you will never, ever play in the first team.' But I was like, 'I'm doing so well, I was like highest run-scorer in the whole country, why can't I even get a look in?' They said: 'No matter how you do, you will never play'," Sharif recalled.

"I remember sitting down towards the end of the season where I performed really well - I think the next best person was averaging in the 30s and I was in the 100s - and the only official reason I ever got was - 'You will never play in the first team'," he added.

"It is clear ... that YCCC`s handling of the issues raised by Azeem Rafiq is wholly unacceptable and is causing serious damage to the reputation of the game," the ECB said in a statement.

"The ECB find this matter abhorrent and against the spirit of cricket and its values."

Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance, who said on Wednesday that he had used racist language towards his former teammate&nbsp;Rafiq, has also been indefinitely suspended from England selection.

"Before any regulatory investigation is complete, the Board wishes to take immediate action in relation to Gary Ballance," the ECB said.

"While Mr Ballance has not been selected to play for England since 2017, he will be suspended indefinitely from selection. This position will be reviewed following the ECB regulatory investigation into his conduct."

The ECB said it would hold Yorkshire to account over their handling of the matter and consider sanctions including but not limited to financial and future match allocations at the end of its investigation.

"In the meantime, YCCC are suspended from hosting international or major matches until it has clearly demonstrated that it can meet the standards expected of an international venue, ECB member and First Class County," the ECB said.

Reuters has contacted the club, whose Headingley stadium is used regularly for England`s test and limited overs matches, for comment.

Several sponsors have ended their partnerships with Yorkshire following an independent report into allegations of racism made by Rafiq, with Nike saying on Thursday that it has cancelled a four-year deal that was signed in March.

"Nike will no longer be the kit supplier for Yorkshire CCC. We stand firmly against racism and discrimination of any kind," Nike said in a statement reported by British media.

Emerald Group Publishing, Yorkshire Tea and Tetley Bitter, among others sponsors, have also said they will end their relationships with the club.

It comes after the 30-year-old Pakistan-born Rafiq accused Yorkshire of failing to act after he alleged racism during his time with the English county in September 2018.

Yorkshire offered the Pakistan-born off-spinner “profound and unreserved apologies”, but last week they said that they would not take disciplinary action against any staff.

The lack of response drew a wave of criticism, prompting sponsors, including kit manufacturer Nike, to cut their ties with the club.

In a strongly-worded statement following an emergency board meeting on Thursday, the ECB described Yorkshire's handling of Rafiq affair as ‘abhorrent’ and suspended their hosting rights until they improve their governance.&nbsp;

“It is clear to the Board that YCCC’s handling of the issues raised by Azeem Rafiq is wholly unacceptable and is causing serious damage to the reputation of the game. The ECB find this matter abhorrent and against the spirit of cricket and its values,” the statement said.

“There is no place for racism or any form of discrimination in cricket and where it is found, swift action must be taken. This matter must be dealt with robustly if the sport is to demonstrate its commitment to truly being a game for everyone,” it added.

The move will set a good precedent for all the other county clubs who fail to act against any instants of racism despite being apprised of by the players.

The decision will also encourage other players to come out and openly report any abuses or racial slurs faced by them immediately instead of waiting for years to highlight the issue. It will also help sensitise the local English players on how to behave with the overseas players.

Yorkshire had been notorious for their “institutionalised racism” against Asian and African origin players.

Before Rafiq, it was Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara who in December 2020 revealed that his teammates in Yorkshire used to address him with a generic name “Steve” instead of calling him by his given name.

A London school has introduced a module on 'white privilege in the curriculum in an apparent move to sensitise the students about a social issue that still creates tension in western societies.

The course will reportedly include Meghan Markle experience with the British Royal Family and will also discuss themes in popular media that'll include all James Bond actors having been white.

The school, St Dunstan's charges 18,000 Pounds a year in fees.

The new element in the curriculum has reportedly been inspired by Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.

The lessons on white privilege will start from Year Nine, when students are usually 13 to 14 years of age.

The course will “help all our young people... to unpick and better understand the complexities and sensitivities of a real and live issue that matters to them and to so much of the society they occupy,” said school headmaster Nicholas Hewlett as quoted by The Times.

Janneke Parrish, an Apple program manager and one of the leaders behind the #AppleToo movement, said she was terminated for “non-compliance” after she deleted personal files from her work device amid an internal investigation, according to the Guardian.

Parrish, who worked at Apple for five years, claims that she was fired for speaking out publicly about "issues within the company".

“I’ve been very vocal, I’ve been very public. I have not been afraid to put my name and attach my face to #AppleToo,” she told the Guardian. “This feels very much like retaliation for having the courage to speak out.”

As part of the investigation, Apple confiscated her devices. Apple encourages employees to use work devices as personal devices, Parrish said, and before handing over devices she deleted files that contained personal information, such as financial data.

Parrish said she did not expect to be fired, but believed her work with #AppleToo would have a negative impact on her career.

A father of a seven-year-old girl has decided to sue his daughter’s school for cutting her hair without gaining permission from her parents.

Jimmy Hoffmeyer has accused a librarian and a teacher's assistant of racial discrimination, ethnic intimidation and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The father has claimed that his daughter’s constitutional rights were violated by forcing her to chop her hair without consulting her parents.

The girl’s father has cleared that his daughter’s hair were cut by a fellow classmate on the school bus. When a complaint was filed to the Principal, his daughter’s hair was restyled at a salon to hide the obvious difference in length.

Two days later, however, his daughter once again came home with her hair shorter on the other side. "I asked what happened and said 'I thought I told you no child should ever cut your hair'," Mr Hoffmeyer said at the time. "She said, 'but Dad, it was the teacher'. The teacher cut her hair to even it out."

"We are confident that the facts will prevail given our district's appropriate and aggressive response to the incident and the findings of the third-party investigation that was conducted,"&nbsp;Amy Bond, president of Mount Pleasant Public Schools Board of Education, said.&nbsp;"We will aggressively defend against these baseless allegations in court and will not allow this to distract us from our mission to provide every child a world-class education that prepares them for college and careers."
