One thing that has become crucial in the 2020 Election campaign is The State of Race relations in America. Susan Tehrani brings you a ground report on the deep racial division in America before Election Day.

A reckoning with racism & discrimination

An African-American man who was arrested and led by a rope by two white Texas police officers has sued the US city of Galveston for $1 million in damages, his lawyer told AFP Monday.

Donald Neely was detained for trespassing in August 2019 by two mounted police officers, who handcuffed him, tied a rope to his restraints and led him away.

The image caused outrage, serving as a painful reminder of some of the bleakest moments in America's brutally racist past, including the chaining of enslaved people and lynching of Black people in the Jim Crow South in the years after emancipation.

Neely was led on foot several blocks through the center of the small seaside town in southeast Texas, passing a number of people, some of whom photographed the incident.

One photo in particular quickly went viral on social media and sparked anger and indignation at the degrading treatment of the detained man.

In a suit filed on October 7, Neely called his treatment by police "extreme and outrageous."

"Neely felt as though he was put on display as slaves once were," the lawsuit said, saying the plaintiff suffered humiliation and fear through the police officers' actions.

Neely is seeking $1 million in compensation.

"What happened to Donald was simply wrong," his lawyer, Julie Ketterman, told AFP. "He wants to do what he can to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else."

"Donald wants people to know that this lawsuit isn't just about money," she said. "It's about what is right and wrong for all people -- whether they are black or white or whether they suffer from mental illness or whether they are homeless or not."

At the time of his detention, Neely -- who suffers from mental health issues -- was homeless. He was found asleep on the forecourt of a building by the two officers from the mounted patrol unit.

Local media reported at the time that he had been charged with trespassing on several previous occasions.

The Galveston police chief, Vernon Hale, who is himself Black, said that the technique deployed by the mounted police was one that was taught to officers, but that he had decided to discontinue its use.

He apologized to Neely and said he should have been transported in a police vehicle, but that none were available at the time.

Hale's statement sparked frustration, with some activist groups saying his response was "weak."

Black man led on a rope by police sues US city for $1 million

The morning after Sen. Kamala Harris became the first woman of color to take a debate stage as a member of a major party’s ticket, President Donald Trump disparaged her as “totally unlikable” and a “communist.” Then, twice, he called her “this monster.”

His dehumanizing language, extraordinary even by Trump’s own standards, was an unusually explicit example of the biased attitudes — about how women should behave, how people of color should behave, and especially how women of color should behave — that have pervaded commentary regarding Harris.

There was the “condescending” label, too, that undecided voters applied to Harris’ facial expressions as they assessed the debate in a focus group run by a Republican pollster, Frank Luntz. There was the member of the Trump campaign’s advisory board who called her an “insufferable lying bitch.”

And there was Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson’s depiction of her as a power-hungry usurper of Joe Biden’s would-be presidency, which played to an old racist and sexist trope even as Carlson insisted his remark had nothing to do with her identity.

These sorts of personal attacks on Harris have been coming since the day Biden chose her as his running mate, when conservative commentators repeatedly mispronounced her name and suggested she wasn’t Black, and a top Google search around that time was whether she was born in the United States.

She was, in California. But the interest in that question — which evoked the birtherism lie that Trump weaponized against former President Barack Obama — spoke to how differently she was being treated than the white vice-presidential nominees who came before her.

Her selection as Biden’s running mate thrilled many Americans who saw themselves represented in a major presidential campaign for the first time. It also unleashed a steady drip of racism and sexism, underscoring not only the double standards women and people of color face, but what happens when multiple identities meet: a Black woman, an Indian American woman, a woman whose parents were immigrants.

Tropes and Caricatures

One of the oldest racist tropes is that of the “angry Black woman.”

It was popularized in the minstrel-like sitcom “Amos ’n’ Andy,” which included a character named Sapphire who became synonymous with the stereotype of an “emasculating” Black woman, said Nadia E. Brown, an associate professor of political science and African American studies at Purdue University.

“Angry,” “mean,” “aggressive,” “disrespectful”: All of these words, which Trump has used to describe Harris, play to this stereotype, which was also used against Michelle Obama. False suggestions that Harris is scheming to run the country in Biden’s stead play to it, too.

“She’ll bulldoze her elderly, sentimental boss,” Carlson, the Fox News host, said Wednesday. “So tonight we’ll be airing the vice-presidential debate, but what we’ll actually be looking at is Kamala Harris’ audition for the presidency. That’s the office she’s running for, no matter what they tell you.”

The attacks on Harris as “unlikable,” which Trump pushed Thursday, also play into a double standard. Voters are more likely to see likability as mandatory for women than for men, research shows, and experts say Black women are often judged even more harshly.

It is something of a tightrope: Stereotypically feminine behavior can lead voters to see women running for office as more likable but less of a leader, while stereotypically masculine behavior can make voters see them as more of a leader but less likable.

This is “the classic double bind,” said Amanda Clayton, a political scientist at Vanderbilt University. “Women can either be seen as leaders or they can be seen as feminine, and the two don’t go together.”

These caricatures and double standards have been accompanied by sexualization, common against women of all races but especially those who are Black. This is another racist trope, the promiscuous, hypersexual “Jezebel.”

After Biden chose Harris, right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh suggested falsely, quoting from a conservative website, that she had “slept her way up.” T-shirts with the slogan “Joe and the Hoe” were briefly available on Amazon. The mayor of Luray, Virginia, called her “Aunt Jemima,” a nod to yet another stereotype, the “Mammy.”

“These are distinctly misogynoir tactics,” Brown said, referring to the combination of racism and sexism that Black women face. “We would not see these stereotypes or these kind of threats used against her if she were not a Black woman.”

Lawyer and civil rights activist Kimberlé Crenshaw introduced the term “intersectionality” three decades ago to describe how various identities can overlap to produce discrimination more complex than just, for instance, racism plus sexism. Experts said Harris’ experience was a prime example.

Several activists and political scientists said they believed such attacks would backfire given voters’ increased awareness of double standards. But Crenshaw, who teaches at Columbia Law School and UCLA, said it was not necessarily that simple, because part of what makes intersectional bias so powerful is that prejudice against one identity can persist in communities of another identity.

She said she worried that “women may not vote against the rampant sexism because of race, and people of color may not vote against the racist and xenophobic dimensions of the Trump assault because of anti-Black racism within Indian communities and misogyny within Black communities.”

Identity Policing

Within hours of Harris’ selection, conservative talk-radio host Mark Levin went on a diatribe about descriptions of her as “the first African American woman” on a major presidential ticket.

“Kamala Harris is not an African American,” he said. “She is Indian and Jamaican. Jamaica’s part of the Caribbean. India is out there near China. I only point that out because if you dare raise that, you’re attacked, but the truth is she’s not, and so I just wanted to make that clear.”

There is nuanced debate within Black communities about what it means to be African American versus Black. But it is common, including among Black people, to use the two interchangeably.

Comments like Levin’s are sometimes referred to as identity policing. Among other things, it suggests that Harris is not who she says she is or that she cannot have multiple identities, as millions of Americans do.

“She’s going to be tasked with managing those perceptions of her identity,” Danielle Casarez Lemi, a fellow at Southern Methodist University’s John G. Tower Center for Political Studies who focuses on race and representation, said after Harris was nominated. “And that’s time that could be spent on the ground, building relationships with people and formulating policies.”

Identity policing is related to broader patterns of “othering,” or casting a person as “not one of us.”

The most brazen example for Harris was the revival of the “birther” lie: A conservative law professor made a discredited argument in Newsweek in August that being born in California might not make Harris a natural-born citizen if her parents were not citizens, and Trump suggested falsely that this notion might be valid.

But the same tendency can be seen in smaller forms, like the frequent mispronunciations of her name and descriptions of her as inauthentic.

On Wednesday, denying that sexism or racism played any role in criticism of Harris, Carlson said on Fox, “More likely, voters don’t like Kamala Harris because she is a transparent fraud, from her phony inflected accent to her synthetic bio to her featherweight work history.” (Harris has been the district attorney of San Francisco, the attorney general of California and a U.S. senator.)

Trump, for his part, began calling her “phony” over the summer. This is one of his favorite adjectives for nonhuman opponents like the Russia investigation and the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. But when used against a person, and especially a woman of color, experts say it has a harmful subtext.

“A word like ‘phony,’ neutral on its face, when leveled against a woman of color takes on a very culturally loaded meaning,” said Tina Tchen, chief executive of Time’s Up, which is part of the “We Have Her Back” coalition of groups formed to call out double standards related to Harris.

It speaks, Tchen said, “to this deeply held, internalized sense that we have in our culture that she’s a phony because she doesn’t belong here.”

Kamala Harris and the ‘double bind’ of racism and sexism

The main officer charged in the killing of George Floyd, the African American man whose death sparked a mass protest movement, was released Wednesday on a million-dollar bail, court records showed.

The 44-year-old white officer is to face trial in March along with three former colleagues over Floyd's death in Minneapolis, which triggered the largest US anti-racism movement since the 1960s.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin had asked a judge to dismiss murder charges against him in the death of George Floyd on August 30.

According to the court papers submitted by Chauvin's attorney earlier, there is not probable cause to support charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors are seeking stiffer-than-usual sentences for four former US police officers charged over the killing of George Floyd, arguing that they showed "particular cruelty" to the handcuffed African American.

The 46-year-old resident of Minneapolis, Minnesota died in May after being pinned to the pavement under the knee of white officer Derek Chauvin as Floyd gasped that he could not breathe.

The case is proceeding amid renewed fury over police violence against African Americans, galvanized by the shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin this week.

"George Floyd, the victim, was particularly vulnerable because officers had already handcuffed him behind his back and then placed him chest down on the pavement, and Mr. Floyd clearly and repeatedly told the officers he could not breathe," the court documents state.

Chauvin inflicted "particular cruelty," as well as "gratuitous pain" as he abused his position of authority, prosecutors allege.

NBA legend Michael Jordan along with three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin have formed a new single-car Nascar Cup Series team. They have chosen Nascar's only black full-timer, Bubba Wallace, to be the team's driver.

Jordan is the second black American to own a team in Nascar. According to Jordan, the team would "educate a new audience".

The six-time NBA champion Jordan also said that it would "open more opportunities for black people in racing".

"Historically, Nascar has struggled with diversity and there have been few black owners," Jordan said. "The timing seemed perfect as Nascar is evolving and embracing social change more and more."

Bubba Wallace was feared to be a subject to a racial attack when a loose noose was found in his garage stall at Talladega Superspeedway in June in Alabama. However, an FBI investigation concluded that it was actually a handle on a garage door and had been there since the previous year.

Earlier this year, the 26-year-old campaigned to ban the Confederate flag banned at Nascar races. The campaign was eventually successful.

On joining Jordan and Hamlin's team, Wallace said: "This is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I believe is a great fit for me at this point in my career."

Jordan's team will begin competing in 2021 with their name, car number, manufacturer, and sponsors to be announced in due course.

Mexico said Friday it has banned a foreign woman from re-entering the country after she was caught on video calling a woman in Mexico City a "horrible Indian"

The foreign woman was apparently angry at one of her Mexican neighbors over tree-trimming on their street, and at one point calls her the Spanish phrase "India horrible," an insulting way to refer to Indigenous or dark-skinned people.

The National Migration Institute said that the foreigner caught a flight out of Mexico after the incident earlier this week and that she would be prohibited from returning.

The agency did not identify the woman or her nationality, but she is heard on the video speaking with a strong Argentine accent and after the incident the Argentine Embassy posted a statement condemning the incident.

The embassy wrote on its Facebook page, "Regarding the events made public yesterday involving people who are apparently Argentine citizens, the country's Embassy in Mexico rejects and condemns any expression of discrimination and/or gender violence." It was unclear why ethnicity came up at all.

The incident took place in Mexico City's upscale Hip?dromo-Condesa neighborhood, where few Indigenous people can afford to live. Most Mexicans have some Indigenous ancestry and are often darker-skinned than Argentines, whose ancestors were often immigrants from Europe.

There have been complaints in the past among Mexicans that lighter-skinned Argentines are arrogant or get preferential treatment in Mexico.

Amid growing concerns of unjust violence towards the African-American community in the United States by the local police, the US President Donald Trump has decided to end anti-racism training sessions in the government agencies and federal government.

The reason behind Trump's decision is simply that he feels this training is yet another "un-American propaganda".

The order was announced by the White House on Friday.

"According to press reports, employees across the Executive Branch have been required to attend trainings where they are told that 'virtually all White people contribute to racism' or where they are required to say that they 'benefit from racism'," a statement from the WHite House read.

Also read: Biden and Trump are in a race against time towards creating controversies

"According to press reports, in some cases these trainings have further claimed that there is racism embedded in the belief that America is the land of opportunity or the belief that the most qualified person should receive a job," the statement read.

The order has come at a time when the US is already burning by clash of police against the people standing in solidarity with the African-American community in the US, who have been tortured by the local police on numerous incidents — some of which led to death of the victims. Recent cases have been George Floyd and Jacob Blake who were violently attacked by the state police even when they were unarmed, leading to Geroge Floyd's death and Blake being admitted in hospital for serious injuries.

The decision was announced less than 60 days before Americans vote for their next Preisdent — a race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Trump is targeting the White and South Asian communities as his voter base.

In addition to believing that these are "un-American" policies, the White House Office of Management and Budget has also been ordered to "ensure that Federal agencies cease and desist from using taxpayer dollars to fund these divisive, un-American propaganda training sessions."

The decision has been widely criticised by the masses.

Singapore's economy has seen a downfall due to the ongoing pandemic, which has resulted in an increase in the unemployment rate.

The increase in unemployment rate has led to some locals fearing that the immigrants might be 'snatching away' their jobs. However, the SIngapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has warned these locals against this anti-immigrant sentiment.

In an almost two-hours long speech in the Parliament, Lee Hsien Loong said, "Even as we adjust our work pass policies, we must be careful not to give the wrong impression that we are now closing up and no longer welcoming foreigners."

This has been one of the main decisions taken by Lee's government to promote local hiring.

A French magazine, Valeurs Actuelles, depicted a French lawmaker as a slave. The magazine has, now, issued an apology after the depiction was criticised by several French government officials.

Obono took to Twitter to condemn the depiction and said, "It seems 'That We-Can-Could-Nothing-Say' #BienPensance . French magazine depicts Black lawmaker as slave; issues apology

French President Emmanuel Macron led nationwide outrage Saturday after an ultra-conservative magazine portrayed a black lawmaker as a slave.

The French presidency said Macron called Danielle Obono from the far-left party France Unbowed and "expressed his clear condemnation of any form of racism".

The magazine, Valeurs Actuelles, which caters to readers on the right and far-right, showed Obono in chains with an iron collar on her neck to illustrate a seven-page imaginary story.

Prime Minister Jean Castex said it was a "revolting publication that calls for clear condemnation" and told Obono that she had the government's backing.

"I share the indignation of lawmaker Obono," he said.

"One is free to write a putrid novel within the limits fixed by the law. One is free to hate it. I hate it," said Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti.

Obono tweeted: "The extreme right -- odious, stupid and cruel. In brief, like itself."

The anti-racism body SOS Racisme deplored rising hate speech against African and Arab politicians and said it was mulling what legal measures could be taken to counter this.

The magazine, however, denied it was racist, saying the story concerning Obono was "a work of fiction... but never nasty."

An official from France's far-right National rally party, Wallerand de Saint-Just, said the story was "in absolute bad taste".

France witnessed several protests in June and July against racial injustice as well as colonial and police brutality, inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and George Floyd's death at the knee of police in the United States.

Macron, a centrist, who raised eyebrows when he gave an interview to Valeurs Actuelles last year and praised it as a "good magazine", has pledged to root out racism.

But he also said France will not take down statues of figures linked to the colonial era or the slave trade, as has happened in other countries recently.

The United Nations has been accused by some of its staff of racism after it issued a survey that included a question asking how they identify themselves. They apparently offered 'yellow' among the possible responses.

The 'UN Survey on Racism' was sent to thousands of staff on Wednesday.

An email accompanying the survey said it was being carried out as part of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' "campaign to eradicate racism and promote dignity."

The first question, however, listed 'yellow' as an option. Other categories offered were black, brown, white, mixed/multi-racial and any other.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the survey would be "taken off-line and revised appropriately taking into account the legitimate concerns" that had been expressed.

Organisations and companies have been under increasing pressure to address racism in the wake of global protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, a Black American who died in May after a white police officer knelt on his neck.

The email accompanying the survey, seen by Reuters, says: “This survey will provide us with the needed data to understand the depth of racism within the United Nations.” It adds, “we are not immune to the issue.”

The family of a 23-year-old Black man who died after a violent encounter with Aurora, Colorado, police officers filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city and its police on Tuesday, alleging murder and routine use of excessive force against Black people.

The man, Elijah McClain, was walking on the street alone in August 2019 when he was stopped by three officers based on a report that he was "being suspicious."

According to the complaint, the officers held him in two carotid holds around his neck, tackled him although he presented no physical threat, and medics attending to him administered an overdose of the sedative ketamine which left him unconscious.

McClain died days later in the hospital.

"Plaintiffs bring this action seeking both accountability for the profound loss of a beautiful soul, and to ensure that Elijah did not die in vain by sending a resounding message that racism and brutality have no place in American law enforcement," McClain's family wrote in the complaint.

A spokeswoman for Aurora said the city attorney's office was reviewing the complaint but had no immediate comment.

McClain's family maintains that he had committed no crime and was stopped unlawfully. Citing previous instances of Aurora police forcefully detaining Black people, they alleged that McClain's case was part of a pattern of racist policing.

The Colorado Attorney General's Office issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that it had launched a broad investigation of Aurora police department patterns and practices that might pose civil rights violations. The office is conducting a separate inquiry into McClain's death, it said.

The case drew renewed scrutiny and public ire in June as protesters against racial injustice and police brutality took to the streets across the United States after George Floyd, a Black man, died in Minneapolis when an officer knelt on his neck.

The officers' forceful restraint of McClain lasted 18 minutes, and he was handcuffed and on the ground for 15, the complaint said.

"I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe please. I can’t. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe, please stop," were among his last words, according to the complaint.

The officers have said McClain tried to take their guns, but there is no body camera footage supporting those statements, the complaint said.

The lawsuit also named Aurora Fire Rescue Department personnel as defendants, alleging that medics failed to care for McClain when they injected him with ketamine, which impaired his breathing. The complaint said McClain showed no signs of resisting when medics administered the sedative.

Three Aurora officers were fired and a fourth resigned last month after authorities found they shared photos of themselves re-enacting the chokehold near the site of the McClain encounter. One of the officers who detained McClain was among those fired.

Minneapolis police body-camera videos of George Floyd's fatal arrest showed him begging for an officer to remove a knee from his neck in the moments before his death.

A Minnesota judge on Friday ordered the public release of the footage nearly three months after Floyd's death, which sparked nationwide protests against police violence and racism. Floyd was Black and the officer charged with murder is white.

The videos, roughly an hour in length, came from the body cameras of former officers Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, who were the first to respond to a store where Floyd was accused of passing a fake $20 bill.

The footage began at 8:09 p.m. on May 25 as Lane and Kueng approached Floyd's vehicle and quickly escalated after Lane drew his gun.

Lane, Kueng and a third officer have been charged with aiding and abetting murder. Derek Chauvin, a fourth officer who knelt on Floyd's neck, has been charged with murder.

Without explaining the reason for the stop, Lane pulled Floyd from the car and Floyd and passenger Shawanda Hill told police he was previously shot in a similar situation. Hill told them he has "a thing going on" about the police.

Floyd begged the officers not to put him in a police car, saying he was claustrophobic and has coronavirus before they push him into the back seat.

Floyd then got out, at which point the officers put him face down on the ground and Chauvin put his knee on Floyd's neck for around 9-1/2 minutes.

Around 16 minutes into the footage, Floyd uttered his final words: "Man, I can't breathe."

Floyd was on the ground around six minutes before Kueng checked his pulse and said he could not find one. When emergency responders arrived two minutes later, they loaded Floyd into the ambulance rather than treating him on the spot.

It was only when Floyd was inside the ambulance, after several more pulse checks, that Lane began chest compressions. Five minutes later a medic ventilated Floyd, 10 minutes after Kueng failed to find a pulse.

Journalists and members of the public were previously allowed to view the video by appointment, and a British newspaper published parts of the video before media organizations requested they be made public.

Floyd begged the officers not to put him in a police car, saying he was claustrophobic and has coronavirus before they push him into the back seat. Floyd then got out, at which point the officers put him face down on the ground and Chauvin put his knee on Floyd's neck for around 9-1/2 minutes. Also read: 'I'm not a bad guy': A distraught George Floyd says in newly released footage Around 16 minutes into the footage, Floyd uttered his final words: "Man, I can't breathe." Floyd was on the ground around six minutes before Kueng checked his pulse and said he could not find one.

NASA, in the wake of the global anti-racism movement, has decided to do away with racially charged nicknames of celestial bodies.

NASA is examining its use of phrases for planets, galaxies and other cosmic objects "as part of its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion."

First ones that appear in the should-be dropped list are -- "Eskimo Nebula" and "Siamese Twins Galaxy".

"Nicknames are often more approachable and public-friendly than official names for cosmic objects, such as Barnard 33, whose nickname 'the Horsehead Nebula' invokes its appearance. But often seemingly innocuous nicknames can be harmful and detract from the science," NASA said in a release this week.

The renaming trend followed worldwide protests against racism and police brutality after George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police.

The space agency says it "will use only the official, International Astronomical Union designations in cases where nicknames are inappropriate."

"Eskimo" is commonly used in Alaska to refer to Inuit and Yupik people, according to the Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska.

"Siamese twins" is an antiquated expression for conjoined twins, based on brothers from Siam (now Thailand) who were used as sideshow freaks in the 19th century.

An Australian cheese brand by the name of Coon is set to change its name in order to eliminate racism -- in the aftermath of a campaign stating the product name was offensive to Aboriginal Australians.

Saputo, the dairy company that owns Coon, announced on Friday that it would retire the Coon brand name. This comes after a decades-long effort to rename the cheese, including an unsuccessful 1999 complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission from Indigenous activist Dr Stephen Hagan.

Coon came under fresh scrutiny over racial connotations in recent months as the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum in Australia.

The brand, which was first sold in 1935, had named the cheese after American cheesemaker Edward William Coon, who, according to the brand’s website, “patented a unique ripening process” used to make the dairy product.

A new name for Coon has not yet been decided.

United States President Donald Trump on Sunday claimed that the Confederate flag was a symbol of “pride” for people of southern US.

The Confederate flag signifies a faction of US states that revolted against plans to end slavery of African Americans, which led to the 1861-65 American Civil War. Recently, ringing bells of police brutality and institutional racism, protesters have taken over the streets across major US cities.

'It depends'

This came in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd in the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis. Since then, many such instances of police brutality have come to light in the US, and around the world.

In conversation with Fox News, the leader said that people who liked the Confederate flag need not be racist, even though the flag largely symbolises white supremacy and slavery. It is also used by many hate crime groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. He said, "It depends on who you're talking about, when you're talking about”.

”When people proudly had their Confederate flags they're not talking about racism. They love their flag, it represents the South. They like the South ... I say it's freedom of many things, but it's freedom of speech”, he added.

This comes at a time when protesters are tearing down the remnants of Confederate legacy across the country, including statues, which was recently outlawed by Trump, causing a series of arrests in Portland on Sunday.

'Freedom of speech'?

Besides claiming it qualifies as “freedom as speech”, in 2017 Trump was critical of people taking down Confederate statues, and claimed that there were “very fine people on both sides”.

NASCAR banned the flag earlier, which drew ire from the president.

Recently, US lawmakers including Republicans had initiated an amendment to remove the names of Confederate generals from US military bases within a year. Trump recently promised to veto the “National Defense Authorization Act”, saying “I’m not gonna go changing”.

Confederate flags not about 'racism', but about 'freedom of speech': Donald Trump

The NFL's Washington team announced on Monday it will retire its Redskins name and logo in a decision made after sponsors stepped up pressure to scrap a name that the franchise has used since 1933 but long has been criticized as racist by Native American rights groups.

Team owner Dan Snyder, who bought the franchise in 1999, had previously said he would never change the name but softened his stance after FedEx Corp <FDX.N>, which owns the naming rights to the team's suburban stadium in Landover, Maryland, urged the NFL club to rebrand.

The team said on July 3 it would conduct a thorough review of the club's name.

"Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review," the team said in a statement.

The team did not provide a time line for when the review would be completed. Its statement did not specify a reason for the name change.

Critics have ramped up pressure on the team to change its name, which is widely seen as a racial slur against Native Americans, amid the nationwide reckoning on racism and police brutality triggered by the May 25 death of a Black man named George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.

In June, a group of more than 80 socially minded investment firms, collectively with more than $620 billion in assets under management, urged FedEx, Nike Inc and PepsiCo Inc to terminate relationships with the team unless it changed its name.

PepsiCo and Nike both followed FedEx's lead and said they welcomed the call for a review of the team's name.

The team that became the Washington Redskins was founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves. Its name was changed to the Redskins the following year and it moved to Washington in 1937. Many American professional and collegiate sports teams have nicknames on Native American themes.

Snyder and Ron Rivera, the team's new head coach, "are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years," the team said.

The team has won three Super Bowls and is one of the NFL's marquee franchises, ranked by Forbes last September as the league's seventh most valuable franchise at $3.4 billion.

In June, a memorial to the team's founding owner, George Preston Marshall, who fought against the racial integration of the National Football League, was removed from RFK Stadium, the team's former home in Washington.

The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the team's announcement.

Former West Indies cricketer turned commentator Michael Holding didn’t hold back his words as he delivered a powerful message against racism on Wednesday while saying the black race has been “dehumanized” and its accomplishment wiped off from a history “written by people who do them harm”.

Holding, who wishes to retire from the commentary box at the end of next year, spoke about racism before the start of the much-awaited England vs West Indies first Test in Southampton. The entire cricketing world tuned in to witness international cricket come back to life after 117 days and it was a perfect opportunity to send a strong message against racism, which Holding and co-commentator and former England captain Nasser Hussain did.

"...when I say education I mean going back in history. What people need to understand, these things stem from hundred years ago," the former pace great said on Sky Sports.

"The dehumanization of the black race is where it started and people will tell you that's a long time ago, get over it. No, you don't get over things like that and the society has not gotten over something like that," he said.

While players, support staff, umpires took a knee before the start of Day 1’ play, everyone including the commentators and broadcast team had BLM logos engraved on their shirts.

Holding further said that people have been brainwashed over the years by an education system that portrayed black race negatively while refusing to credit them for contributing to humanity’s advancement.

"History is written by the conqueror, not by those who are conquered, history is written by people who do them harm, not by those who get harmed...We are being brainwashed, not just black people, white people are being brainwashed in different ways," he said.

"Think about religion ... Look at Jesus Christ, the image that they give of him: pale skin, blond hair, blue eyes. Where Jesus came from, who in that part of the world looks that way but again this is brainwashing to show this is what perfection is.

"If you look at the plays of those days, Judas who betrayed Jesus, he is a black man, again brainwashing people into thinking he is a black man, he is the bad man."

While citing the recent incident where a white woman called the police on a black bird-watcher in New York, Holding said her actions were based on established perception.

"...by the time he (the black man) proves he is not guilty, he might be dead. she had that thing in her mind from day one. That's why she said and did what she did," Holding said.

"They keep telling me there is nothing called white privilege, give me a break, I haven't seen white people go into a store and being followed. A black man walks in, and someone is following him everywhere he goes, that is basic white privilege," he explained.

"Whether that white person ends up robbing the place or not, he is not being thought in that way, and things like that have to change," he asserted.

Talking about how the achievements of black people have been ignored over the years, Holding said: "...everybody knows Thomas Edison invented the light bulb with a paper filament, can you tell me who invented the filament that makes these lights shine throughout? Nobody knows because he was a black man, it was not taught in schools.

"Lewis Latimer invented the carbon filament, who knows that. Everything should be taught. I was never taught anything good about black people and you cannot have a society that is brought up like that, both black and white, that only teach what is convenient."

While the light bulb was discovered by Edison but Latimer invented the carbon filament which was used to create longer-lasting bulbs.

Former England skipper Naseer Hussain, who was also present during the discussion on racism, said it's been too long that people have been looking away.

"I sat there six weeks ago and I watched a black man being killed in front of my eyes. My natural reaction is to look away ... the next time, it came on, because of the protest, I forced myself to watch, because I felt something inside me tell that Naseer you have been looking away for too long," he said.

"We all have been looking away for too long. The players should be proud of wearing these badges but really, it's 2020 and we have to wear a badge saying black lives matter, really?"

Asked if he had ever faced racism in his life, Hussain said: "Of course, I have (faced racism), with my surname growing up ... with an Indian dad and an English mom, probably getting a bit from both sides."

"While fielding in the boundary in various parts of the world and people say 'hey Saddam'," he added.

US President Donald Trump lashed out on NASCAR's only black driver Bubba Wallace and has urged him to apologise after FBI denied any hate crime against the racer.

Last month, NASCAR released a statement that a noose was found in the garage stall of black driver Bubba Wallace at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, and they have launched a probe of the "heinous" act. The noose has been a symbol of lynchings in the American South.

Wallace took to Twitter to condemn this "despicable act of racism" against him. He wrote: "The despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened and serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism."

Incident brought the NASCAR community together and many of them rallied around Wallace. NASCAR champions Kyle Busch and Ryan Blaney pushed Wallace's vehicle on track as he steered it to the front of the pit road. The entire 40-driver field and all their crew members followed.

'Apologise': President Donald Trump lashes out at NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace over noose protest

British sprinter Bianca Williams has said on Monday that she is planning to take legal action against the police after accusing them of racial profiling her and her partner in a stop-and-search operation in London.

Williams also rejected police's claim that her car was driven on the wrong side of the road on Saturday.

"They (the officers) said there's a lot of youth violence and stabbings in the area and that the car looked very suspicious," she told BBC radio.

Over the last month, protests across the United States soared again racist behaviour by police, with many analysts backing the view that black folks are more susceptible to police brutality in the country, and have a higher rate of dying in an altercation with the police.

Kanye West received both plaudits and criticism on Tuesday when he released a powerful new single about racism and faith a day after congratulating his wife Kim Kardashian on what he said was her billionaire status.

West was slammed on social media for touting his family`s wealth in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic that has seen more than 36 million Americans lose their jobs.

Hours later, he released the emotional single and video "Wash Us in the Blood," that blended references to religion and systemic racism in the United States with imagery from recent protests about deaths of Black people at the hands of police.

Some critics called the release, featuring Travis Scott, West`s best music in years.

Britain`s Guardian newspaper said West`s latest release was an "intensely potent study of race and faith" that presented an "apocalyptic vision of America."

The single is from West`s upcoming album "God`s Country."

On Monday, after cosmetics company Coty Inc bought a 20% stake in Kardashian`s KKW line that valued the make-up brand at $1 billion., Kanye tweeted that he was "so proud of my beautiful wife Kim Kardashian West for officially becoming a billionaire."

"You’ve weathered the craziest storms and now God is shining on you and our family," he added
.
Forbes on Tuesday estimated Kardashian`s net wealth after the Coty deal at $900 million.

"We all share your joy, Kanye - this is EXACTLY the news everyone wanted as the world is being ravaged by a global pandemic & economic disaster," British television presenter Piers Morgan tweeted in response to West`s congratulatory post.

West, whose own net wealth is estimated by Forbes at $1.3 billion, last week struck a 10-year deal with Gap for a new line based on his Yeezy leisure clothing brand.

The US Department of Homeland Security announce a special new task force Wednesday to protect historic monuments across the country, some of which have come under attack for glorifying the country's racist past.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf said in a statement that he was positioning "rapid deployment teams" around the country to protect monuments and statues during the July 4th Independence Day holiday.

Many monuments have come under attack, and some pulled down, in the past month as protestors against police abuse of African Americans target figures of the pro-slavery south in the 1860s Civil War and other symbols of the country's legacy of slavery.

But the monument protests have extended to revered early presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, both slave owners.

In some cases, local governments under popular pressure have decided to remove the monuments themselves.

President Donald Trump expressed outrage when on June 22 demonstrators attempted to pull down a statue directly in front of the White House of president Andrew Jackson, another slave owner who presided over the mass expulsion of Native Americans from their homelands in the 1830s.

To show solidarity towards the ongoing protests around the world against the racial discrimination that the African community faces worldwide, Unilever has decided to remove few misleading and discriminatory words from their products' packets.

On Thursday, Unilever announced that the company has decided to take skin care portfolio to the next level as they aim to make it a racism-free line of products.

The company will be removing words such as ‘fair/fairness’, ‘white/whitening’, and ‘light/lightening’ from its products;' packs and communication.

One of the most common products in India, the "Fair and Lovely" brand, will also be renamed and relabeled in the next few months.

Sunny Jain, President Beauty and Personal Care, said, “We are fully committed to having a global portfolio of skin care brands that is inclusive and cares for all skin tones, celebrating greater diversity of beauty. We recognise that the use of the words ‘fair’, ‘white’ and ‘light’ suggest a singular ideal of beauty that we don’t think is right, and we want to address this. As we’re evolving the way that we communicate the skin benefits of our products that deliver radiant and even tone skin, it’s also important to change the language we use.”

The brand has been aiming towards a more inclusive approach for few years now, the company claims. The officials said that while the company has, till now, been focusing on women impowerment, they will also stand up for the minority communities now.

“We have been working on the evolution of our Fair & Lovely brand, which is sold across Asia, progressively moving to a more inclusive vision of beauty that celebrates skin glow. We have changed the advertising, communication and – more recently – the packaging in South Asia, and we think it’s important that we now share the next step that we have been working on: changing the brand name. We will also continue to evolve our advertising, to feature women of different skin tones, representative of the variety of beauty across India and other countries. We want Fair & Lovely to become a brand that celebrates glowing and radiant skin, regardless of skin tone,” added Jain.

Following criticism from an online petition and social media, an Indian matrimony website, Shaadi.com too has decided to remove a search filter labelled 'fairness'. The search filter allowed people to demand for specific skin tones, which has faced backlash in the past too.

The decisions come after protests erupted all over the world, starting from the US, after an unarmed African American man was brutally murdered by an American police cop.
