A Sikh man from India has been facing racial abuse in Australia. Dog excrement was smeared on the door handles of his car for four to five days in a row. He also found racist graffiti in his driveway and received threatening letters. What is Australia doing to rein in its racism?

Gravitas: 'Go home Indian': Sikh man faces racism in Australia

From smearing dog excrement on his car to telling to “go home”, a Sikh businessman in Australia has claimed he had been subjected to racial slurs and threats over the past two to three months.

Jairnal Singh, who has been living in Hobart, Tasmania, for the past 15 years, said that he has been continuously targeted, and added that the constant barrage has shaken him.

"Never, ever has this happened to me before, and it's been continuous [over]&nbsp;the last two, three months," Singh, who runs a popular Indian restaurant Dawat – The Invitation', told ABC News on Wednesday (Nov 15).

The first incident happened a few months back when he found that his car handle was covered with dog poop. This happened for several days in a row.

<h2>Subjected to targeted racial attacks&nbsp;</h2>

Later, he found racist graffiti in his driveway, telling him to "go home, Indian".

Though he reported the matter to the police, lack of video evidence hampered the investigation.

The landlord then installed cameras at the property, which eased the situation a bit, but then threatening letters started to come.

Those letters were filled with racial slurs, however, Singh decided to ignore it after reporting to the police.

But subsequent letters contained even more offensive words than the previous ones. It included threats to damage his car, and also had comments like "you can **** off back to India", reports ABC News.

"It's mentally very stressful when it comes to your house, and particularly [being targeted]&nbsp;with your name on it," he was quoted as saying.

<h2>Local community comes forward, extends support&nbsp;</h2>

Singh found massive support from his customers and expressed his gratitude in a social media post.

"I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible support I have received in many ways, phone calls, messages, and personal visit to our restaurant just to check on me," he wrote.

"Thanks you so much everyone in Hobart your support, love and emotions shows that we all are together and there is no space for racism in our beautiful country."

<h2>Police say investigating&nbsp;</h2>

Following this, Tasmania Police Commander Jason Elmer put out a statement informing that they are investigating the incident.

Two flight attendants have accused United Airlines of staffing young, white and thin female attendants on its charter flights for the Los Angeles Dodgers at the team's request.

Two flight attendants have accused United Airlines of staffing young, white and thin female attendants on its charter flights for the Los Angeles Dodgers at the team's request. According to the suit filed on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, United Airlines removed female flight attendants from the Dodgers charter flights because they belonged to the minority. They replaced them with "young, white and thin women, who did not have to interview for the highly coveted positions" at the team's request. Darby Quezada, 44, and Dawn Todd, 50, have worked for United Airlines for over 15 years. Quezada is of Black, Mexican and Jewish descent, and Todd is Black, Los Angeles Daily News reported. They alleged that United employees who were white engaged in racism, discrimination, and antisemitism towards minority flight attendants on the Dodgers charter flights. Quezada claimed they called her "the flight's maid" as they needed "a Mexican to clean the bathrooms." They told her to stop speaking Spanish because "we are in America. She received antisemitic comments like, "You know Jesus died for you even if you don't believe" and "You don't look Jewish." ALSO READ | Decoding Mercedes-Benz's grim outlook on global EV market Dawn Todd claimed she faced retaliation after reporting the demotion of Black flight attendants and the denial of benefits and perks to Black flight attendants on Dodgers flights, in addition to the racism and ageism she experienced. The plaintiff's attorney, Sam S Yebri, stated, "Major American corporations like United Airlines must understand that it is illegal to make staffing decisions based on an employee's race and looks." He added, "United's blatantly discriminatory staffing decisions on the flights allowed the cancer of racism and antisemitism to metastasize themselves." "United's charter airline program for professional sports teams has a long, troubled history," said the latest lawsuit. "For years, United's Inflight Charter Program has been riddled with allegations of discrimination, racism and sexism." United Airlines has denied the accusations. Charles Hobart, a United spokesman, told City News Service, "United Airlines fosters an environment of inclusion and does not tolerate discrimination of any kind. We believe this lawsuit is without merit and intend to defend ourselves vigorously." Crew members working on Dodgers charter flights get paid more for longer trips, receive better accommodations and higher allowances, and often receive valuable sports tickets, passes and merchandise, as per the latest lawsuit. Black and Jewish flight attendants at United Airlines filed a similar complaint against the company in 2020. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

A recent survey of first- and second-generation Black immigrants across 13 European Union countries has brought to light a&nbsp;troubling increase in racism, with Germany, Austria, and Finland reporting the highest rates of discrimination and harassment.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) conducted the survey, showing that within six years since the previous study, the percentage of respondents who reported experiencing racial discrimination in the past 12 months had risen by 10 points to reach 34 per cent.&nbsp;

<h2>Austrian&nbsp;and German stats</h2>

In Austria and Germany, the proportion was a concerning 64 per cent, nearly double the previous level of 33% in Germany and significantly higher than the 42 per cent&nbsp;recorded in Austria six years earlier. Finland followed closely with 54% reporting racial discrimination.

FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty told Reuters that the lack of improvement since the last survey was shocking, highlighting that people of African descent face increasing discrimination solely due to the colour of their skin.

The survey also examined respondents who reported feeling racially discriminated against over the past five years, which had risen to 45 per cent&nbsp;across the 13 countries surveyed, marking a six-point increase from the previous study. The top three countries remained the same, with Germany reporting the highest rate at 76 per cent.

The extensive poll, conducted by Ipsos for the FRA, involved 16,124 immigrants and their descendants across 15 countries. The survey took place between October 2021 and September 2022 and will produce several reports on other ethnic minorities and Muslims. The current report, titled "Being Black in the EU," is the first to be published from this broader survey, focusing on 6,752 individuals born in sub-Saharan Africa or with at least one parent born there residing in 13 EU countries.

In contrast, Portugal and Sweden had the lowest harassment rates and, along with Poland, reported the lowest levels of racial discrimination according to respondents.

The FRA report included a set of recommendations for EU member states, urging them to enforce anti-discrimination legislation rigorously and consider racial bias as an aggravating circumstance when determining penalties for crimes.

Deputy spokesperson of Barcelona board Mikel Camps has come under scanner for claiming that Vinicius Junior was deserving of a slap for his on-field actions. Camps made the statement after the Real Madrid star was racially abused by Sevilla fans during last week's La Liga match. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Camps posted his opinion, igniting controversy which forced him to delete the post later. "It's not racism, he deserves a slap for being a clown. What do these unnecessary and meaningless stepovers represent in the centre of the field?," said Camps as Real Madrid were playing Braga in the Champions League. Reacting to Camp's post, Real Madrid forward Rodrygo said: "I don't know if I can speak, they always encourage us not to speak, but it's pathetic. There's not much to say, very ugly." Also read | Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr slams La Liga after racial abuse, Brazil President calls for end of racism Racist Sevilla supporters It was last week that at least two Sevilla supporters were caught on camera making monkey gestures towards Vinicus during the match. "The face of today's racist is plastered on websites as on many other occasions. I hope the Spanish authorities do their part and change the legislation once and for all. These people must be criminally punished too," said Vini Jr. in a post on X. The Brazilian forward said punishing the racists would be the first step in "preparing for the 2030 World Cup" whilst adding that it was the 19th time that such an incident had transpired with him. "Sorry to seem repetitive, but this is isolated episode number 19. And counting." After the culmination of the match, Sevilla issued a statement saying "a member of the public was identified, ejected from the stadium and handed over to legal authorities". "Furthermore, the internal disciplinary regulations will be strictly applied to him and he will be expelled as a member imminently," the club added. Earlier this year, after Vinicius Jr. was racially abused by Valencia fans, he wrote a lengthy post and called out the Spanish league saying "racism is normal in La Liga". In an incident that has been described as "institutional racism" within the UK's healthcare system, nurses are accused of subjecting a Sikh patient to degrading and prejudiced treatment. The&nbsp;healthcare professionals allegedly used plastic gloves to tie the patient's beard and&nbsp;failed to attend to his basic needs, leading to a distressing situation where he was left in his own urine, and offered him food that directly contravened his religious dietary requirements, reported PTI.&nbsp;

The victim, an unnamed Sikh patient, documented his ordeal and complaints in a note he left on his deathbed. Despite the explicit and harrowing grievances detailed in this note, the nurses responsible faced no immediate repercussions and continued to work without interruption. The Independent newspaper brought this deeply disconcerting incident to public attention by citing a confidential dossier leaked from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the UK's nursing regulatory body. This dossier outlines a disturbing pattern of alleged racism involving nursing staff, both towards their colleagues and patients.

In response to these grave allegations, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has launched an investigation to unearth the extent of discrimination that may be entrenched within the healthcare system.

The investigation's aim was to uncover the truth about these deeply troubling claims and take necessary measures to rectify this pressing issue.

A whistleblower from within the NMC has emerged, asserting that the regulatory body has neglected to address "institutional racism" within its ranks for a staggering 15 years.

This longstanding failure, according to the whistleblower, has enabled unchecked behaviour among NMC personnel, fostering an environment of discrimination and bias.

Furthermore, the whistleblower alleges that the NMC staff has been applying guidelines inconsistently, often influenced by their own discriminatory beliefs.

After a woman was hit and killed by a police car in January, the Seattle Police Department released bodycam video on Monday that appears to show an officer joking and smiling; the officer reportedly claimed the incident was being misrepresented. Finland's government survived a parliamentary no-confidence vote on Friday that had been called over a racism scandal that has rocked the ruling coalition since it took office in June.

An official tally showed 106 members of the 200-seat parliament backed the coalition, while 65 members supported the no-confidence motion proposed by three opposition parties. The remaining members either abstained or gave blank votes.

Within days of assuming power the four-party, right-wing government was in turmoil after Finnish media revealed that several ministers from the far-right Finns Party had posted statements in the past that were widely condemned as racist.

In an attempt to stave off collapse, the government last week agreed on a policy to combat intolerance and brought it up on Wednesday for a plenary discussion.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo of the conservative, pro-business National Coalition Party said he believed the government's new anti-discrimination policy had persuaded parliament to support the cabinet.

"I am really satisfied that the confidence was clear, everyone has been able to see that this summer has been challenging around this discussion of racism," Orpo told reporters after the vote.

"The government does not accept any form of racism," he added. Parliament voted separately over confidence in Finance Minister Riikka Purra and Economic Affairs Minister Wille Rydman, both of the Finns Party, and they also won parliamentary backing. Purra, who is the Finns Party's leader, apologised in July for anonymous comments she acknowledged she had posted online about 15 years ago, although she said many had been taken out of context. Finnish government survives no-confidence vote over racism scandal

US Republican Governor from the state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, on Thursday (September 7) got into a heated argument with an audience member during a press conference, who blamed him for the racially motivated mass shooting that left three Black people dead in Jacksonville, last month.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened?</h2>

According to reports, the exchange which lasted not more than three minutes, started out cordial with both DeSantis and the unidentified man thanking each other for their military service. However, the unidentified man went on to accuse DeSantis of enacting policies “that hurt people like myself and the people that I love,” including his children.&nbsp;

The person also said that the policies the Florida governor backs have led to weapons going to “hateful people.” Subsequently, a visibly angry DeSantis said, “You don’t get to come here and blame me for some madman.” He added, “That is not appropriate and I’m not going to accept it.”

During the press conference which took place in Jacksonville DeSantis said, “I’m not going to let you accuse me of committing criminal activity. I am not going to take that.” This was followed by some audience members clapping.

In the clip, Luke used the 'N-word' while he was in a room with Cory Wurtenberger, Hisam Goueli and Jared Fields. He said, "I'm in the f---ing cheese room, n----." He took a pause and thought about what he said and tried covering up his word by replacing the "N-word" with "dude."&nbsp;

Brandon Jackson, an engineer at Microsoft, discovered that his Amazon account was locked less than 24 hours after a delivery driver dropped off a package at his home and reported him for making racist remarks via the doorbell intercom. Jackson realised the lockout when he couldn't interact with his smart home devices and reached out to Amazon for clarification.

<h2>Allegations&nbsp;</h2>

Jackson promptly refuted the allegations, highlighting the fact that none of his family members were present at the time of the delivery. To gather evidence, he reviewed footage from his home's surveillance cameras, which revealed that an automated response from his Eufy doorbell had triggered, saying, "Excuse me, can I help you?" Jackson concluded that the driver, who was walking away and wearing headphones, must have misinterpreted the message.&nbsp;"My Amazon account was locked, and all my Echo devices were logged out.”

Despite submitting video evidence immediately, his account remained locked.

<h2>Questioning Amazon's response</h2>

Although Jackson expressed support for Amazon's efforts to protect delivery drivers, he raised concerns about being locked out of his account for a week during the internal investigation.

He emphasised the need for a more targeted approach to handling such issues, suggesting that a blanket shutdown of all services was unnecessary.

<h2>Delayed Account reinstatement</h2>

Despite Jackson's numerous calls and emails, his account was not reinstated until May 31. The incident left him questioning his loyalty to Amazon, as he believed that a misunderstanding should not lead to such drastic measures. He expressed the need for a better approach when addressing similar issues to avoid unnecessary disruptions for innocent customers.

“It seems more reasonable to handle such issues in a more compartmentalized way, rather than a blanket shutdown of all services," Jackson said.&nbsp;

<h2>Amazon's response</h2>

An Amazon spokesperson, Simone Griffin, confirmed the incident and acknowledged the need to prevent similar situations in the future. The company stated that, based on their investigation, Jackson did not act inappropriately.

Amazon shuts down customer's smart home devices over false racism claims

The Little Mermaid and the history of Chinese racism

People from minority ethnic backgrounds in one area were up to eight times more likely to be fined for breaking Covid rules in England and Wales, a study commissioned for Britain’s police chiefs found, reported The Guardian, on Wednesday (May 31). The media report citing the findings also said that racial disparity was found for every single force.&nbsp;

<h2>What else did the study find?</h2>

Citing the report commissioned by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), the data for which was collected by academics at the University of Edinburgh, the Guardian reported that black people were three times more likely to be fined for breaking COVID-19-related restrictions when compared to white people.

Reportedly, the fines were also seven times more likely to be issued in the poorest areas in England and Wales than in the richest neighbourhoods. The study was conducted between March 27, 2020, and May 31, 2021, when the police issued a total of 122,506 fines.&nbsp;

The study is said to be one of the most detailed analyses of who was fined and how fair the police were while invoking emergency powers to enforce lockdown rules which in the UK changed several times.&nbsp;

In England, the report found that the rate of fixed-penalty notice (FPN) per 10,000 people was 19.9 for white individuals as opposed to 46.1 for those belonging to an ethnic minority background. However, the ethnic disparity rate was highest for black people who were a little more than three times more likely to be issued with an FPN.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in Wales, the ethnic disparity rate was 2.8 times for people from ethnic minorities while the number remained close to the same for black people. “There was not a single force area that did not have a higher disparity rate for ethnic minority groups,” said the report’s co-author, Professor Susan McVie, as quoted by the Guardian.&nbsp;

However, the media report citing the study also noted that the highest rate of disparity was found for those above the age of 45 and not the youth belonging to the ethnic minority group who were stopped and searched by the police. Additionally, in England, men were twice as likely to be fined.&nbsp;

It is also worth noting that this study was not published despite the NPCC commissioning it. “I was surprised they did not publish it having commissioned and paid for it,” said McVie, as per the Guardian.

Earlier this year, a separate report by the London Metropolitan Police which reviewed the standards of behaviour and internal culture of the service unravelled some very disturbing assessments including key findings of institutional racism, sexism and homophobia.&nbsp;

As per the report, there are people in the Met with racist attitudes. It underscores that Black, Asian and ethnic minority officers and staff are more likely to experience racism, discrimination and bullying at their hands.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the police say about the report?</h2>

The UK-based media report quoted NPCC lead for enforcing Covid rules, the assistant chief constable Owen Weatherill, who said it is “clearly a concern” to see these disparities in the number of FPNs issued to white and black, Asian or ethnic minority people.&nbsp;

However, the data does not indicate why these disparities exist, said Weatherill, adding that each force will study the data to “assess and mitigate any risks of bias – conscious or unconscious – and to minimise disproportionate impact in the future, wherever possible.”

Formula One champ Lewis Hamilton comes out in support of Vinicius Jr. for speaking against racism

After an illustrious career spanning more than three decades, trailblazing aboriginal journalist Stan Grant broadcast his farewell programme on Monday and announced his retirement from Australian television screens indefinitely.

"Racism is a crime. Racism is violence. And I have had enough," Grant wrote in a column last week explaining his decision, reported the BBC.

In 1992, the Wiradjuri man made history by becoming Australia's first Aboriginal presenter on prime-time commercial television. He went on to win several Australian media honours and worked as an overseas journalist for CNN and Al Jazeera before coming home to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

He is one of Australia's most recognised and renowned journalists, according to the ABC

But he appeared defeated&nbsp;on Monday night, visibly trembling as he signed out from his political panel show Q+A.

"To those who have abused me and my family, I would just say - if your aim was to hurt me, well, you've succeeded," he said.&nbsp;

Grant's decision to quit has rekindled heated debates in Australia regarding racism and media diversity.

"If one of the few Indigenous presenters on television with a career that took him all over the world can't be protected from racism... what will that mean for anyone who walks down a similar path?" ABC journalist Ryma Tchier wrote on Twitter.&nbsp;

<h2>Newsrooms dominated by white people</h2>

Indigenous Australians have a history dating back over 60,000 years, and half of Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was.

However, the media that represents such a diverse population remains overwhelmingly white.

According to a 2022 research, more over three-quarters of Australian TV reporters and broadcasters are of Anglo-Celtic descent. The disparity was considerably more obvious at the executive and board levels.

The Media Diversity Australia study forced the five TV networks under investigation to admit to a lack of diversity. However, the channels questioned the report's results, citing how it defined cultural background and the study's brief, two-week research span.

Several others mentioned that they had expanded diversity in other areas of their output or that they had worked to boost representation through targeted positions and recruiting.

Australian indigenous TV host Stan Grant's quits programme over racist abuse

Real Madrid lost to Valencia 1-0 in the La Liga fixture on Sunday (May 21). After the match, Brazil and Madrid's forward Vinicius Jr. made heads turn by slamming La Liga and even labelling Spain racist after receiving racial slurs from the stands in the game&nbsp;at Valencia’s Mestalla stadium. The Brazilian forward wrote a lengthy tweet&nbsp;where he slammed the widely popular Spanish league and said 'racism is normal in La Liga'.&nbsp;

“It was not the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga. The competition considers it normal, the federation considers it normal and the rivals encourage it,” Vinicius posted on Twitter after the game. Check out his tweet:

La Liga responded to Vinicius' revelations and claimed that it&nbsp;will request all available images&nbsp;to dive deep into the matter and investigate further. In a statement, it said, “If any hate crime is identified, we will take the appropriate legal action."

However, La Liga President&nbsp;Javier Tebas asked the 22-year-old Vinicius to be more informed with regard to&nbsp;what can be done in such cases.

Tebas wrote on Twitter, “Since those who should explain to you what it is and what La Liga can do in cases of racism, we have tried to explain it ourselves, but you have not shown up for either of the two agreed dates that you requested yourself,” he said on Twitter. He added, "Before you criticise and slander La Liga you need to inform yourself properly @Vinijr. Don’t let yourself be manipulated and make sure you understand each other’s competencies and the work we have been doing together." To this, Vinicius also had a fitting reply:

<h2>BRAZILIAN PRESIDENT REACTS, CALLS FOR END OF RACISM IN FOOTBALL</h2>

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also took note of Vinicius' allegations and joined in to express&nbsp;his support for the player, calling for an end to racism in the sport altogether.&nbsp;

In a press conference, he said, “I would like to express my solidarity with our Brazilian player, a poor boy who succeeded in life and is potentially becoming one of the best players in the world, certainly the best at Real Madrid. And he is attacked in every stadium he plays in. I think it is important that FIFA, the Spanish league and leagues in other countries take real action, because we cannot allow fascism and racism to dominate football stadiums.”

It will be interesting to see what actions are taken in the Spanish league to counter the racism issue. Speaking of Real Madrid, the club lost to Valencia 1-0 with Diego Lopez finding the back of the net in the 33rd minute. Real never looked at their usual best and failed to level scores.

Vinicius Jr. complained regarding the racial abuse he faced during the face-off, leading to a halt to proceedings by ten minutes, before getting into an altercation with the Valencia player. This led to his send-off during the second half of the encounter.

After the match, Brazil and Madrid's forward Vinicius Jr. made heads turn by slamming La Liga and even labelling Spain racist after receiving racial slurs from the stands in the game at Valencia’s Mestalla stadium. The Brazilian forward wrote a lengthy tweet where he slammed the widely popular Spanish league and said 'racism is normal in La Liga'. “It was not the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga. The competition considers it normal, the federation considers it normal and the rivals encourage it,” Vinicius posted on Twitter after the game. Check out his tweet: Não foi a primeira vez, nem a segunda e nem a terceira. O racismo é o normal na La Liga. A competição acha normal, a Federação também e os adversários incentivam. Lamento muito. O campeonato que já foi de Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano e Messi hoje é dos racistas. Uma nação… — Vini Jr. (@vinijr) May 21, 2023 × La Liga responded to Vinicius' revelations and claimed that it will request all available images to dive deep into the matter and investigate further. In a statement, it said, “If any hate crime is identified, we will take the appropriate legal action." However, La Liga President Javier Tebas asked the 22-year-old Vinicius to be more informed with regard to what can be done in such cases. Also Read: Manchester City celebrate third successive Premier League title triumph with 1-0 win over Chelsea Tebas wrote on Twitter, “Since those who should explain to you what it is and what La Liga can do in cases of racism, we have tried to explain it ourselves, but you have not shown up for either of the two agreed dates that you requested yourself,” he said on Twitter. He added, "Before you criticise and slander La Liga you need to inform yourself properly @Vinijr. Don’t let yourself be manipulated and make sure you understand each other’s competencies and the work we have been doing together." To this, Vinicius also had a fitting reply: Mais uma vez, em vez de criticar racistas, o presidente da LaLiga aparece nas redes sociais para me atacar. Por mais que você fale e finja não ler, a imagem do seu campeonato está abalada. Veja as respostas do seus posts e tenha uma surpresa... In a press conference, he said, “I would like to express my solidarity with our Brazilian player, a poor boy who succeeded in life and is potentially becoming one of the best players in the world, certainly the best at Real Madrid. And he is attacked in every stadium he plays in. I think it is important that FIFA, the Spanish league and leagues in other countries take real action, because we cannot allow fascism and racism to dominate football stadiums.” It will be interesting to see what actions are taken in the Spanish league to counter the racism issue. Speaking of Real Madrid, the club lost to Valencia 1-0 with Diego Lopez finding the back of the net in the 33rd minute. Real never looked at their usual best and failed to level scores. Vinicius Jr. complained regarding the racial abuse he faced during the face-off, leading to a halt to proceedings by ten minutes, before getting into an altercation with the Valencia player. This led to his send-off during the second half of the encounter. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. California's Democratic state Senator Steven Bradford has given a stark reality check to the African Americans in the state who were hoping to receive massive&nbsp;reparation&nbsp;payments.&nbsp;Bradford, who served on the&nbsp;California Reparations Task Force that recommended the state pay up to&nbsp;$1.2 million in reparations to each eligible Black resident said people should keep their 'expectations' in check.&nbsp;

Bradford said “anything’s possible if the money’s there,” but remained&nbsp;“realistic” that it could be difficult to garner enough support.&nbsp;

“I don’t want to set folks’ expectations and hopes up that they’re going to be getting, you know, seven-figure checks,” Bradford said in an interview. “That’s just not happening.”

He added that lawmakers had not even debated where the money for the reparation payment would come from.&nbsp;
