"We are in constant contact with all sides at the moment. Our priorities are to end the bloodshed, release the prisoners and make sure the conflict is contained with no regional spillover," foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari told Reuters, without elaborating.

There are no signs of immediate breakthrough.

There are 2.3 million people in the Gaza strip.

Egypt has been in touch with both, Israel and Hamas and making efforts to prevent further escalation in fighting.

Reuters quoted Eran Lerman, former Israeli deputy national adviser, who said that Israelis were unlikely to concede to conditions of the hostage takers.

"We should have to see how long they are going to hold the hostages when over the next few days there is no water, no electricity, no food, no medicine for the entire Gaza population," he said.

Images of Israelis being taken into Gaza have made their way to social media. Israel has said that it will act to set the hostages free in accordance with a longstanding principle of leaving no prisoner behind.

Qatar has a direct line of communication with Hamas. The country has previously helped mediate between the Islamist group and Israel.

Qatar, a tiny nation but a wealthy energy and investment powerhouse, has ambitious foreign policy goals. It was recently under global spotlight after hosting more than a year of negotiations between the US and Iran. These negotiations ultimately led to prisoner exchange between the two nations and fund releases.

The&nbsp;five detainees&nbsp;Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz and Siamak Namazi, along with two Americans who have not been publicly named arrived near&nbsp;Washington DC a day after being&nbsp;flown out of Tehran on a Qatari government jet to Doha, according to American media reports.&nbsp;

“The nightmare is finally over,” said Babak Namazi, speaking with his arm around his returning brother Siamak at Fort Belvoir in the US state of Virginia, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Prisoners swapped</h2>

Tehran and Washington had agreed to swap five prisoners each. The swap comes after months of&nbsp;Qatar-mediated talks and took place&nbsp;after the US and Iran received confirmation that the funds, blocked in South Korea, had been transferred to accounts in Doha.

The deal brokered by Qatar was agreed upon after at least a reported eight rounds of talks over several months between Iran and the US as they continue to remain at odds over a number of issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After the transfer of funds was confirmed,&nbsp;the five American prisoners&nbsp;plus two relatives took off on a Qatari plane from Tehran.&nbsp;

Iran's Press TV reported that&nbsp;two out of the&nbsp;five Iranians to be released in the exchange landed in Doha on Monday (Sep 18) and are on their way to Tehran.&nbsp;

Two other Iranians released would stay in the US at their request and one detainee would join his family in a third country, according to Iranian officials.&nbsp;

<h2>What was the deal about?</h2>

The $6 billion frozen in South Korea had been generated by Iran through oil sales to Seoul. It was stuck after the US under former president Donald Trump reimposed sanctions as he withdrew from a landmark nuclear accord of 2015.&nbsp;

On Monday, US President Joe Biden&nbsp;welcomed the return of the American&nbsp;prisoners back home&nbsp;“after enduring years of agony, uncertainty, and suffering,”&nbsp;and also announced&nbsp;a fresh round of sanctions against Iran.&nbsp;

Spanish top flight LaLiga has filed a complaint with the European Commission against Paris St Germain's "spending commissions", alleging the Qatari-backed French club are distorting markets through subsidies from the Gulf state.

The practices have allowed PSG, owned by Qatar Sports Investments since 2011, to sign top players and coaches "well above its potential in a normal market situation", LaLiga alleges in the complaint filed on Saturday.

The league said in a statement that "PSG has received foreign subsidies from the State of Qatar, which has allowed it to improve its competitive position, thus generating significant distortions in several national and EU markets".

A commission regulation on foreign subsidies that came into force last month gives it "the power to investigate financial contributions granted by non-EU countries to companies engaging in an economic activity in the EU and redress, if needed, their distortive effects".

"PSG obtains resources on non-market terms which distort several closely related markets," LaLiga said. "It is also able to secure sponsorship income which does not correspond to market values."

"This enables them to boost their sporting performance, as well as affecting the ability of rival clubs to recruit."

"Therefore, LaLiga trusts that the European Commission, thanks to this new regulatory tool, will take the necessary measures to eliminate market distortions such as those described above, which seriously damage the sporting ecosystem."

Last year, LaLiga filed a complaint with the European soccer governing body UEFA against PSG and Manchester City, alleging they violated financial fair-play regulations.

PSG have splashed out on several expensive signings in recent years, including paying a world record 222 million euros ($243 million) for Brazil forward Neymar in 2017 and 180 million euros for striker Kylian Mbappe in 2018.

The French champions also renewed Mbappe's contract last year when he was widely tipped to join Real Madrid.

Mbappe is in a contract standoff with PSG. Relations between the him and PSG have been tense since the French forward said in June, he would not renew his deal, which expires at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Qatar on Tuesday (June 20) inked a second 27-year gas supply deal with a Chinese state-controlled firm in less than a year. The move is in line with Qatar's efforts to expand production from the world's biggest natural gas field.

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and QatarEnergy signed the agreement, under which China will buy 4 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year from the Gulf Arab state.

QatarEnergy chief Saad al-Kaabi said that CNPC will also take an equity stake in the eastern expansion of Qatar's North Field LNG project.

"Qatar will supply four million tonnes annually of natural gas from the North Field East Expansion Project to China over a period of 27 years," Qatar's Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi told a signing ceremony in Doha.&nbsp;

"This will become the second LNG (liquefied natural gas) sale and purchase agreement to China within the North Field East Expansion Project," added al-Kaabi, who is also head of state firm QatarEnergy.

CNPC chairman Dai Houliang released a statement saying that the deal will establish a strong foundation for energy cooperation between both sides.

"It lays a solid foundation for the energy cooperation between the two sides in the next three decades," CNPC chairman Dai Houliang said in a statement.

"CNPC will continue to actively discuss with QatarEnergy all-round cooperation across the hydrocarbon industry chain and other areas like green and low carbon energies," he added.

Earlier, QatarEnergy signed a 15-year supply deal with Bangladeshi state company Petrobangla and last month a $10 billion contract was awarded to France's Technip Energies and Consolidated Contractors Company for the engineering, procurement and construction of the North Field South project.

"This type of long-term, large volume deal is exactly what QatarEnergy wants," said Ben Cahill, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

"QatarEnergy probably has more than 60 million tons (tonnes) per year in uncontracted LNG capacity... So as big as this deal is, Qatar needs to stack up a lot of these."

According to Justin Alexander, director of the Khalij Economics consulting firm: "The solid and long-term demand from Asia may spur European buyers to advance negotiations to ensure the security of supply."

Asian countries led by China, Japan and South Korea are the main market for&nbsp;Qatar's gas, which has been increasingly sought by European countries since Russia's invasion of Ukraine early last year.

By expanding activities at North Field, which has the world's biggest natural gas reserves and extends under the Gulf into Iranian territory,&nbsp;Qatar&nbsp;is raising its LNG production by 60 per cent plus to 126 million tonnes a year by 2027.

CNPC signed a separate agreement for a five per cent interest in North Field East, the equivalent of one gas-liquefying complex producing eight million tons of LNG a year.

"It lays a solid foundation for the energy cooperation between the two sides in the next three decades," CNPC chairman Dai Houliang said in a statement.

"CNPC will continue to actively discuss with QatarEnergy all-round cooperation across the hydrocarbon industry chain and other areas like green and low carbon energies," he added.

The value of the deals was not announced.&nbsp;Qatar, whose gas riches have made its per-capita gross domestic product among the highest in the world, has struck a series of major agreements surrounding the North Field expansion.

Earlier this month, QatarEnergy agreed a 15-year supply deal with Bangladeshi state firm Petrobangla, and last month it awarded a $10 billion contract to France's Technip Energies and Consolidated Contractors Company for the engineering, procurement and construction of the North Field South project.

In April, Sinopec became the first Asian firm to get a stake in the North Field East expansion, also gaining a five per cent stake.

Qatar coach Carlos Queiroz said New Zealand's captain came over at half-time to inform him they would not be resuming the game.

"The facts are the following. Apparently two players on the pitch exchanged words," Queiroz told Qatari sports channel Alkass.

"The New Zealand players decided to support their teammate. All our team decided to support our player.

"The staff of New Zealand also support the statement of the New Zealand player. We support our player and they decided to abandon the game with no witnesses.

"The referee did not (hear the exchange), the benches, coaches nobody (heard). Just an argument between two players."

Queiroz said he expected FIFA would investigate the matter.

"Let's allow the football authorities to take a decision about what happened," he added.

"I think this case will be under the observation of FIFA, for sure, because I ask the coach, the referees... nobody (heard anything)."

In a separate incident, also in Austria, a game between the Republic of Ireland Under-21s and Kuwait Under-22s was cut short after an Irish player was allegedly the target of racism.

The May 12 meeting in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar between Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani and Haibatullah Akhunzada is the first the reclusive Taliban chief is known to have held with a foreign leader.

US&nbsp;President Joe Biden's administration was briefed on the talks and is "coordinating on all issues discussed" by the pair, including furthering dialogue with the Taliban, said the source.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said other issues Sheikh Mohammed raised with Haibatullah included the need to end a Taliban bans on girls' education and women's employment.

The meeting represents a diplomatic success for Qatar, which has criticized Taliban restrictions on women while using long-standing ties with the Islamist movement to push for deeper engagement with Kabul by the international community.

The United States has led demands for the Taliban to end the bans on girls' schooling and women working, including for UN&nbsp;agencies and humanitarian groups, to restore their freedom of movement and bring Afghans from outside Taliban ranks into government.

The source's comments suggested that Washington supported elevating what have been unproductive lower-level talks in the hope of a breakthrough that could end the world's only bans of their kind and ease dire humanitarian and financial crises that have left tens of millions of Afghans hungry and jobless.

The White House declined to comment on the talks. The State Department and the Qatar embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment.

The Taliban did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT BANS

The restrictions on women's schooling and work have stymied humanitarian aid and are key reasons why no country has recognized Taliban rule since they seized power in August 2021, after the Western-backed government collapsed as the last US-led international troops departed following two decades of war.

The treatment by the Taliban of women and girls could amount to a crime against humanity, according to a UN&nbsp;report presented in March at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The Taliban say they respect women’s rights in line with their interpretation of Islamic law and Afghan customs.&nbsp;

Haibatullah, a hardline Islamist, has shown little willingness to compromise on his edicts.

His meeting with Sheikh Mohammed, however, suggests that he is open to exploring avenues for ending Afghanistan's isolation and boosting relief programs as the country sinks into hunger and poverty.

"It was a very positive meeting," said the source. Haibatullah was "very interested" in continuing a dialogue with the international community.

But eventual recognition by other countries of the Taliban administration, senior members of which remain under US&nbsp;and international sanctions, is far from assured given their treatment of women and poor human rights record.

Sheikh Mohammed raised with Haibatullah the need to lift the bans on women's education and employment, including the bar on them working for UN&nbsp;agencies and other humanitarian groups, the source said.

The Taliban administration has been promising since January written guidelines allowing aid groups to operate with female staff.

The Taliban in March 2022 barred girls from high schools and extended the ban to universities in December.

They say they will reopen secondary schools to girls when "conditions" have been met, including devising an Islamic syllabus.

ADDRESSING HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

Sheikh Mohammed and Haibatullah also discussed efforts to remedy Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis, the source said.

The United Nations says nearly three-quarters of Afghanistan's 40 million people need help and it has warned that funding is drying up.

Sheikh Mohammed, the source said, raised with Haibatullah the "continued efforts on the ground" by the Taliban on counterterrorism, an apparent reference to Kabul's drive to crush an Islamic State affiliate.

The main ideological foe of the Taliban is based mostly in eastern Afghanistan but has targeted minorities and embassies in Kabul.

The US&nbsp;and its allies say the Taliban harbor members of al Qaeda and the Pakistani Taliban. The Afghan Taliban deny that.

Sheikh Mohammed, who also serves as Qatar's foreign minister, met publicly in Kandahar with Mullah Hassan Akhund, the Taliban prime minister, on the same day he met the supreme leader. He was accompanied by Qatar's intelligence chief.

Neither side, however, revealed the talks with Haibatullah.

He almost never leaves Kandahar but has been the paramount religious, political and military leader of the Taliban since 2016, guiding the movement to victory over the Western-backed Kabul government.

Qatar’s former finance minister Ali Sherif al-Emadi will face a criminal trial, said the state-run Qatar News Agency (QNA) in a short statement issued on Sunday (March 19), following his arrest two years ago over alleged embezzlement. Al-Emadi who served as the minister of finance in the wealthy Gulf Arab state from 2013 till his arrest in 2021 will face trial along with a number of others who have been charged with similar crimes.&nbsp;

The state-run news agency without mentioning the number of other people said Al-Emadi and others will face trial over charges of bribery, abuse of position and power, damage to public funds and money laundering, reported Reuters. However, it is also unclear whether all those accused will face the same charges or not.&nbsp;

“Since evidence extracted from the case documents proved that the accused committed the crimes ascribed to them, the Attorney General issued an order to refer the accused to the Criminal Court to punish them for the crimes ascribed to them, which included bribery, appropriation of public money, abuse of office, abuse of power, damage to public money and money laundering,” said the QNA report, as per Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

Notably, there are not a lot of details released about Al-Emadi’s arrest including how much money the former minister is accused of stealing. The 54-year-old who was arrested in May 2021 was stripped of his ministerial duties and&nbsp;removed from the Qatar Investment Agency which owns 50 per cent of the Qatar National Bank where he served as a board member.

Al-Emadi was also one of the most powerful officials in the country prior to his arrest, and was CEO of the bank, on the board of Qatar’s $300 billion sovereign wealth fund and president of the executive board of Qatar Airways. While Al-Emadi has been arrested, he has not been placed in detention, reported AFP.

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani have previously clarified that the investigation into the former finance minister was related to his ministerial duties and not his posts at the sovereign fund or the bank, reported Reuters. Notably, ahead of Al-Emadi’s arrest the Qatari PM had also revised the law ending immunity from prosecution for ministers.

The decision to give Qatar hosting rights for the 2022 World Cup was&nbsp;plagued by controversy, including claims of corruption and human rights breaches&nbsp;since it was initially announced 12 years ago.

Nonetheless, it appears that controversy is not leaving Qatar alone. This time an accusation has been made against the country's intel for spying on a top former Swiss prosecutor.&nbsp;

A six-year-old informal meeting between Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, and Michael Lauber, the country's top prosecutor at the time, was bugged by Qatari intelligence, according to the NZZ am Sonntag weekly.

The covert encounter in Bern on June 16, 2017, according to the newspaper, had been discreetly taped on behalf of the Gulf state. When the secret meeting was revealed Lauber lost his job. However, Qatar has refuted the claims. Moreover, Lauber's attorney told the newspaper that his client was not aware of being spied on or blackmailed by Qatari intel agents.

At the time, Lauber's office was looking into serious claims of corruption in the world of football, including anomalies in the selection of Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup.

He was compelled to step down after it was discovered that he had three unofficial meetings with Infantino, particularly the one from 2017, which he originally denied ever occurring.&nbsp;

NZZ said that the discussion took place in a conference room adjacent to the Qatari embassy at the opulent Hotel Schweizerhof, which has been owned by Qataris since 2009. According to the sources, the primary objective of espionage was to obtain evidence that might be used to put pressure on the prosecutor.

He urged the international community to step up and help the more than 1.1 billion people in these countries and lift them out of poverty. “Countries with the least need support the most. And you need it now. You represent one in eight people on earth. But your countries are trapped in vicious cycles that make development difficult, if not impossible,” Guterres told the Summit in Doha, Qatar.

The LDC Summit is normally held every 10 years but was twice postponed since 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

Over the next five days in Doha, government leaders and other stakeholders are set to assess the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA), adopted at a precursor UN conference held in Türkiye in 2011, and mobilise additional international support and action for the world’s 46 least developed countries.&nbsp;

In his welcoming remarks at&nbsp;the LDC Summit, the UN chief stressed that the cost of living was becoming increasingly difficult due to the war in Ukraine, resulting in higher energy and food prices.&nbsp;

“For your countries, progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — starting with the eradication of extreme poverty and ending hunger — is about more than lines on a chart leading to 2030,” the Secretary-General said.&nbsp;

The Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are countries listed by the United Nations that exhibit the lowest indicators of socioeconomic development across a range of indexes.

“You risk being left behind in the digital revolution without the support or technology you need for social and economic development or job-creation,” he said, calling for an end to the conditions that have left vulnerable countries facing a “perfect storm.”&nbsp;

“Ending this (perfect) storm for perpetuating poverty and injustice...requires massive, sustained investment,” he explained, and stressed that the global financial system had been designed by wealthy countries, “largely to their benefit”. &nbsp;

All LDCs have a gross national per capita income (GNI) of below USD$1,018; compare that to almost $71,000 in the United States, $44,000 in France, $9,900 in Turkey and $6,530 in South Africa according to data from World Bank.

There are currently 46 LDCs, the vast majority of which are in Africa. The list is reviewed every three years by the UN Economic and Social Council. Six countries have graduated from LDC status between 1994 and 2020.

More than other countries, LDCs are at risk of deepening poverty and remaining in a situation of underdevelopment. They are also vulnerable to external economic shocks, natural and man-made disasters, communicable diseases and crucially climate change.

Currently, the Glazers family owns Manchester United since 2005 but the fans have been adamant to force them out, primarily for not doing enough for the club. Succumbing to the pressure, the American group in November last year shared their interest in seeking outside investment in the club. The Glazers peg the club at $7.2 billion but the industry experts, as per ESPN, believe that the realistic price tag is around $5.4 billion. Notably, United is not the only club in the 'Big-six' that might be sold in the upcoming months. Rumours have been swirling around the potential sale of United's arch-rival Liverpool to Qatar-based businesses too.
