Gravitas: Can terrorists get Pakistani nukes?

Former spinner Mushtaq Ahmed believes that England's cricketers would happily tour Pakistan and says his country deserved better having travelled the other way at the height of the pandemic.

Ahmed, who has a foot in both camps after serving as England's spin-bowling coach in 2009-2015, voiced his frustration to AFP after English cricket chiefs controversially cancelled tours for their men's and women's teams next month to cricket-crazy Pakistan.

The first trip by the England men's side to Pakistan since 2005 was only meant to last four days with two Twenty20 matches in Rawalpindi.

But the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) last week cited "increasing concerns about travelling to the region", days after New Zealand abandoned their tour of Pakistan minutes before the start of the first one-day international in Rawalpindi, citing a security alert.

The ECB decision was met with fury in Pakistan which only went up a notch after the Daily Mail newspaper reported that the England players were not consulted.

"I think from my experience, playing in England and also coach of England for six years, I think the guys are very open-minded and they know the circumstances of the world," Ahmed, 51, said of the English players.

"I know them -- I played with lots of cricketers, I coached them for six years, I played (English) county cricket," he added.

"I think (the) players will definitely come now," he said, pointing out that a number of England players had featured in the Pakistan Super League in recent seasons.

Ahmed said that Pakistan deserved better after they toured England last year.

Pakistan travelled a time when Covid infection rates in Britain were among the highest in the world for a three-match Test and T20 series that saved the ECB millions in television rights deals.

"If (a) team can travel in corona (virus) situation when the people were dying (in Britain) and Pakistan went to England and played a series, then they should have acknowledged that and they should respect that," said Ahmed.

Becoming a hero

Ahmed, who played 52 Tests, 144 one-day internationals and was a member of Pakistan's 1992 World Cup-winning team, said that other cricket tours and tournaments had gone ahead in countries where there had been terror attacks.

However, a deadly 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore saw Pakistan become a no-go destination for international teams.

In 2012 and 2015 Pakistan hosted England in the UAE, which has staged most of their "home" games since the attack.

Ahmed said having to play away from Pakistan was "very difficult" for the team.

"I am saying that because heroes become heroes when they play in front of their home crowds and that is when you start believing that you can represent your country -- you deserve that platform," he said.

"When you play in Pakistan I remember that I used to feel different body language in me and used to have a different mindset," he added.

With the arrest of a terrorist from Pakistan, the country’s blatant role in supporting terrorism for its nefarious gains against neighbouring nations has again come to light.

At several forums, numerous Indian leaders and diplomats have been reiterating the same for years.

Several leaders from Afghanistan before the takeover by Taliban had also voiced their concern about Pakistan’s support to the group’s terrorists in Afghanistan. The most vocal of the lot was former Afghanistan vice president Amrullah Saleh. Scores of top Afghan Taliban leaders were seen hiding in Pakistan. Pakistan's Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid on Monday claimed the country's government is in contact with Interpol over the threatening emails received by the New Zealand cricket team which led to the cancellation of the Black Caps' tour of Pakistan. The New Zealand cricket team was in Pakistan to play a limited-overs series earlier this month but had to abandon their tour after receiving a security threat.

Pakistan minister Rashid has claimed New Zealand cricket team had recieved a total of 12 emails which will be probed by Interpol. Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Rashid said Interpol will also probe the "India-Singapore links" of the emails, as per a report in Pakistan daily The Express Tribune. Rashid said "There will be good news soon," while responding to a question from one of the reporters on Interpol's investigation in the matter.

New Zealand cricket team had abandoned their entire tour of Pakistan, hours ahead of the start of the first ODI between the two sides in Rawalpindi earlier this month. The Kiwis travelled to UAE from Pakistan before returning home. In what was a ripple effect of New Zealand's decision to not play in Pakistan, the England Cricket Board also confirmed that they will be not going ahead with England's upcoming tour of Pakistan ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021.

Earlier, Rashid had claimed the emails received by the New Zealand team were sent from an associated device in India using a VPN. The Pakistan minister alleged Singapore's location was used while sending the emails from India."The device RMX 1971 (Realme) used 13 email IDs and except for Hamza Afridi, the 12 other email IDs had Indian/Hindi names," Rashid had said in a press conference earlier.

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja has been left utterly disappointed by England and New Zealand's decision to pull out of their respective tours and is reportedly considering a legal route against the two boards ahead of the next executive ICC meeting.

Pakistan cricket team will now return to action in the upcoming T20 World Cup. They will lock horns with arch-rivals India in their opening game of the showpiece event on October 24.

Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram has urged Pakistan fans to support their national cricket team in the current time of crisis after England and New Zealand pulled out of their respective tours of the county. While New Zealand were in Pakistan and abandoned the series ahead of the first ODI earlier this month, England announced they will not be sending their men's and women's teams to the country.

The decision from New Zealand and England cricket board has left the Pakistan cricket fraternity in shock and disarray with several experts and former cricketers criticising the decisions. Akram has now come out and sent a message to the fans, asking them to back Babar Azam & Co. as they gear up for the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE starting next month.

"I know you're all very disappointed with New Zealand and England when they cancelled their tours. Especially New Zealand, for cancelling it at the last moment. I am equally disappointed, equally down and equally sad. But life has to go on. Like our chairman Ramiz Raja said, support Pakistan. The team they have picked for the World Cup, let's support them for once," Akram said in a video shared by Cricket Pakistan.

Akram also sent a message to Babar & Co. urging the Pakistan team to do well at the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE. The legendary pacer feels if Pakistan do well in the World Cup, a number of teams will be running after them. Having played a significant amount of cricket in the UAE, which is their second home, Pakistan will be one of the favourites at the T20 World Cup this year.

On Sunday morning, a blast in the port city of Gwadar, Balochistan province, completely demolished a statue of Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

The statue, which was unveiled in June this year at Marine Drive, was blown up by placing an explosive device beneath it, according to a report in Pakistan's English newspaper Dawn.

According to reports, the blast was carried out by the Baloch Liberation Front.

According to BBC Urdu, Babgar Baloch, a spokesman for the outlawed militant group Baloch Republican Army, claimed responsibility for the bomb on Twitter.

Gwadar Deputy Commissioner Major (retd) Abdul Kabir Khan said the case was being probed at the highest level.

"The demolition of Quaid-e-Azam's statue in #Gwadar is an attack on the ideology of Pakistan. I request authorities to punish the perpetrators in the same way as we did with those behind the attack on Quaid-e-Azam residency in Ziarat," Balochistan’s former home minister and current Senator Sarfraz Bugti tweeted.

A number of Afghan traders claim they have suffered significant losses as a result of transit complications imposed by the Pakistani government on the Chaman-Boldak route, and they are calling for an immediate solution to the problems.

They claim that if their concerns on the route are not resolved, they will close their operations.

One businessman who imports cooking oil from Malaysia to Afghanistan through Pakistan's Karachi port blamed the Pakistani government directly for the border snarl.

Pakistan usually only opens the border for a brief time and with a lot of restrictions, he claimed.

Previously, 500 transit containers were allowed to be transported over the route every day, but now just 70 to 80 are allowed.

Attacks on Pakistani security stations near the Afghan border have intensified since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.

Despite statements by Pakistani authorities that the Pak-Afghan border was secure, the country's vernacular media stated that instability on the Afghan side appeared to be leaking into Pakistan.

According to The Afghanistan Times, the businessmen demanded that the relevant authorities find an urgent solution to the challenges that occurred alongside the so-called Durand Line crossing locations.

The governor of southern Kandahar province, Haji Mohammad Yusuf Wafa, corroborated the issues raised by the Afghan shopkeepers.

Wafa indicated that he has discussed the issue with Pakistani authorities.

Pakistan has consistently stated that the border will be open 24 hours a day, but it has failed to follow through on this commitment.

The percentage of exports, imports, and transit to this country has plummeted to 80%.

Imran Khan's UNGA address was mostly a rant. He tried to paint Pakistan as a victim of terror, promoted the Taliban as a force for good & spewed venom against India. Here's Palki Sharma's take on the Pak PM's speech.

Gravitas US Edition: Decoding Imran Khan's UNGA speech

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday lashed out at Prime Minister Imran Khan's PTI government over the hike in gas prices and said the country has the "highest inflation rate and lowest income in the world."

Demanding to withdraw a proposed hike in gas prices, the Opposition leader said that rising gas prices are "unjustified" and "another foolish act" by the government, Geo News reported.

Terming the last financial budget as "the International Monetary Fund (IMF) budget", Sharif wrote on Twitter: "The government is only fulfiling the conditions set by the IMF." He said that the government lied to the nation about a "tax-free budget".

"People cannot bear more inflation; this oppression after oppression must be stopped," Geo News quoted Sharif as saying.

He said that gas and electricity prices have witnessed "historic" surges and censured PM Imran Khan for giving rise to "civil war-like conditions" with "one foolish decision after another".

"Rising electricity and gas prices will make people's lives more miserable, while an increase in gas prices will make bread more expensive, and consumers's monthly bills will go up further," the PML-N leader said.

Sharif stated that Imran Khan "should resign instead of pressuring the people with soaring inflation," Geo News reported.

"How long will Pakistanis suffer the consequences of Imran Khan's incompetence?" he questioned.

The government has already increased the price of gas by 141 per cent, he said, adding that gas companies have been destroyed "due to Imran Khan's incompetence".

The opposition leader said that Pakistan is buying the most expensive LNG in the world, while electricity and gas prices in Pakistan are also the most expensive in South Asia, Geo News reported.

"Pakistan has the highest inflation rate and lowest income in the world," Sharif added.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is a master at the twisting, modifying, and blending fact and fiction to suit his purposes.

He gave his third UNGA speech as prime minister of Pakistan on Friday, and his speech, delivered over video, was clearly three times more disgraceful.

The Pakistani prime minister attempted to portray Pakistan as the victim of American ungratefulness and an international double standards, in a prerecorded speech aired on Friday evening.

“For some reason, Pakistan has been blamed for the current crisis in Afghanistan by politicians in the United States and some politicians in Europe,” Khan remarked.

“From this platform, I want them all to know that, aside from Afghanistan, Pakistan was the country that suffered the most when we joined the US war on terror after 9/11,” he said, referring to the 11 September, 2001 terror attacks carried out by al Qaeda that led to US invasion of Afghanistan and the eventual killing of the terror group's chief Osama bin Laden, in Pakistan.

"The only reason we suffered so much was that we became an ally of the US, of the coalition, in the war against Afghanistan, where attacks were being conducted from Afghan soil into Pakistan. At least there should have been a word of appreciation. But rather than appreciation, imagine how we feel when we are blamed for the turn of events in Afghanistan".

Dubey used her Right of Reply to criticise Imran Khan's references to Kashmir in his UN General Assembly virtual speech, claiming that Islamabad has a long history of deliberately aiding terrorists.

Dubey, First Secretary of India said at UNGA, "Regrettably, this is not the first time the leader of Pakistan has misused platforms provided by the UN to propagate false and malicious propaganda against my country, and seeking in vain to divert the world's attention from the sad state of his country where terrorists enjoy free pass while the lives of ordinary people, especially those belonging to the minority communities, are turned upside down."

Decoding Taliban apologist Imran Khan's speech at UNGA: A rant mixed with lies and fiction

The Taliban can be potential partners in peace for both the United States and Pakistan, said Prime Minister Imran Khan in an interview with Newsweek's Senior Foreign Policy Writer Tom O'Connor.

The PM also termed US President Joe Biden's hard line against Taliban as "unnecessary". Pakistan is a "willing companion" of the US in counter-terrorism and other endeavours, added Khan.

Karachi, Sep 24 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will not consider hosting its home series at neutral venues from now onwards, a senior official said on Friday, asserting that the country is safe to host international games. New Zealand arrived in Pakistan for the first time since 2005 but left without playing a single game, citing a security threat.

England also decided to cancel its tour to Pakistan, saying it had players' welfare in mind. "That is now out of the equation because the security situation in Pakistan is normal and we have everything in place to host any international team. No more neutral venues for us," a PCB official said.

After the cancellation of the two tours, the PCB had approached a few Boards to arrange an international series at home before the T20 World Cup but now it has decided to organise a domestic event.

"Initial talks were held with some boards including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but it was then decided to focus on the National T20 Championship as all the main players are available for the event and it is a curtain-raiser to the World Cup for us now," the official said.

He said that Sri Lanka players would be in Oman holding a training camp ahead of their World Cup qualifying matches from October 17 as they have to qualify for the Super-12 stage.

"Bangladesh agreed to send a B team and Zimbabwe were also willing to come but we, after discussions, decided that since time was short it was better to focus on the domestic event," he said. The official said the cancellation of the home series against New Zealand and England was a big setback for the country but it was heartening to see that cricket world had sympathy for Pakistan cricket.

"Nearly everyone believes that Pakistan cricket has been treated badly and deserves to have proper international cricket." The Board is now planning to send the World Cup squad and reserves a bit earlier to the UAE so that they can settle in properly after completing their quarantine periods. Asked about the tours by West Indies and Australia, the official said the Board has been in touch with them.

"We know the situation is not perfect after the New Zealand and England withdrawals but what we can do is make the best security arrangements to the satisfaction of the touring sides. We are prepared for every situation now," he said.

China & Pakistan are aligning their policies to make the Taliban sway to their tunes. What does this nexus mean for South Asia? How worried should India be? Palki Sharma discusses the security repercussions with a special panel of guests.

Gravitas US Edition: What does the China-Pak-Taliban nexus mean for South Asia?

Pakistan Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry is claiming that the threat to New Zealand's cricket team, that led to the cancellation of their Pakistan tour on September 17, came in an email that originated in India.

Recently, New Zealand abandoned the series citing a government "security alert" on the day when the first match of the tour was supposed to begin.

New Zealand cricket had, however, did not comment on the details of the security threat and later arranged a charter flight to bring their players home via UAE.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday (September 22), Fawad told reporters, "This email was generated from India through a VPN showing the location of Singapore".

Satellites spotted a large plume of methane leaking from one of Pakistan’s largest cities last month.

According to an estimate from geoanalytics firm Kayrros SAS, the cloud was seen over Lahore on August 6 and had an emissions rate of about 126 metric tons of methane an hour. A second, smaller plume was seen above the city on August 31, emitting about 39 tons of methane an hour.

It has become very difficult to determine the origin for the same. “These kinds of events around cities are very difficult to find the origin of,” said a spokesperson for Kayrros.

“Most of the time, it’s different sources that accumulate into methane clouds.”

This is not the first time such an incident has taken place in Lahore.

Lahore has a history of these kinds of leaks. Since the beginning of 2019, Kayrros has analysed dozens of methane clouds spotted around the city. Kayrros uses data collected by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-5P satellite.

A researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Space Research who also uses Sentinel 5-P’s data to hone in on global methane hot spots, Bram Maasakkers, has said that one potential source could be the Lakhodair landfill in the northeast part of the city.

Following Maasakkers’ work, geoanalytics firm GHGsat captured a large methane plume on July 1 from Lakhodair landfill.

The rate of release was about 4 tons per hour, which GHGSat captured using its own commercial satellites. The landfill operators did not reply to a request for comment.

New Zealand's last-minute withdrawal from the tour of Pakistan caused a devastating blow to the South Asian nation's hopes of staging regular international cricket tournaments at home, which were suspended in the aftermath of a 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan side that wounded at least six players.

Pakistan's image has taken a nosedive as the abrupt withdrawal is deemed as another era of isolation for Pakistan and a global humiliation, which is quite shocking to witness as the nation is governed by a former cricketing legend Imran Khan. Despite Khan being the Prime Minister of the country, the status of cricket hasn't seen the expected boost.

Now, the New Zealand decision to abandon the tour has posed another mammoth task for Khan and the Pakistan Cricket Board to convince countries for future tours and avoid another period of embarrassing exile.

On September 17, the grass, the pitch, the atmosphere at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium looked positive from Pakistan's perspective but the narratives changed within minutes as the Kiwis refused to travel to the stadium.

When the toss got delayed, rumours started floating on the social media forums that some players in NZ camp have been tested COVID-19 positive, however, New Zealand Cricket informed that they are abandoning the tour, citing a security alert. The two cricketing giants were to play on September 17 first of three ODIs in Rawalpindi, before moving to Lahore for a five-match T20 series.

In the absence of some frontline players, New Zealand travelled to Pakistan for the first time in 18 years. The Pakistan Cricket Board mentioned that Govt of Pakistan made foolproof security arrangements for all visiting teams and were guarded by a heavy paramilitary and police contingent.

Pakistani cricketers are angry as ex-cricketer Shoaib Akhtar wrote that New Zealand has "killed Pakistan cricket". PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja was also frustrated as he said that in "which world" is NZ living in and they will hear Pakistan at ICC.

Skipper Babar Azam said that he is "extremely disappointed" with the abrupt postponement of the series, which could have brought the "smiles back" for millions of Pakistan cricket fans.

Now, Raja in a video posted on the board's Twitter handle said that "it's an unfortunate scenario". "But we've faced similar situations in the past and have always overcome them. We've tremendous resilience... it's a setback to staging international cricket in Pakistan but we'll overcome this crisis too," he added. Pakistan have only hosted South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe since the 2009 attacks.

What will happen next as England are already reconsidering their limited-overs trip, while the status of Australia, who are scheduled to visit in February-March next year, remains unclear. A Cricket Australia spokesperson said the organisation was monitoring the situation and would "talk with the relevant authorities once more information becomes known".

The question here arises that what's next for the cricket-crazy nation, especially under PM Imran Khan who might understand the feeling of millions of fans.

IN PICS | New Zealand abandon Pakistan tour: 8 instances when sporting events got affected on security grounds On September 17, the grass, the pitch, the atmosphere at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium looked positive from Pakistan's perspective but the narratives changed within minutes as the Kiwis refused to travel to the stadium.
