With the Taliban struggling to form a new government, Pakistan intelligence chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed visited Kabul on Saturday, leading a delegation of Pakistan officials.

Although it is not clear as to what was the purpose of his visit, a senior official in Pakistan had said earlier in the week that Hameed could help the Taliban reorganise the Afghan military.

Pakistan journalist Hamza Azhar Salam said Hameed was invited by the Taliban to discuss the future of the two countries.

“DG ISI, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed has arrived in #Kabul leading a delegation of Pakistani officials on the invitation of the Taliban to discuss the future of #Pakistan and #Afghanistan ties under the new Taliban government,” he tweeted.

The Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid on Saturday said they had to postpone the formation of a new government in Afghanistan for next week, as the insurgent group struggles to give shape to a broad-based and inclusive administration acceptable to the international community.

This is the second time that the Taliban have delayed the formation of the new government in Kabul since their toppling of the US-backed Afghanistan government. The insurgent group was expected to announce the formation of the new government led by its co-founder Mulla Abdul Ghani Baradar on Friday, but later postponed it by a day to Saturday.

Notably, the Taliban leadership had its headquarters in Pakistan and were often said to be in direct contact with the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency.

The religious minorities in Pakistan have accused the government of undercounting them in the latest census data published in May.

This comes in four years after the survey was conducted.

The survey for the sixth Population and Housing Census was undertaken under former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and got completed in 2017.

However, the results were delayed after some provinces, including Sindh and Balochistan flagged the issue of undercounting.

According to the 2017 census data, Pakistan’s overall population has grown to 207.68 million.

This is an increase of around 75 million since 1998 when the country recorded 132.3 million people.

As per the census, the Muslim population in Pakistan grew by 96.47 per cent while the population of other religious minorities reported negligible growth and even shrank in some cases.

Hindus in Pakistan account for 1.73 per cent of the total population while Christians make up for 1.27 per cent of Pakistani residents.

Other minorities like Ahmaddiyas account for less than 0.1 per cent of Pakistan’s population.

Karachi Supreme Court attorney Neel Keshav claimed that the Hindu population in Pakistan is likely to be much higher, reported Pakistan Today.

Pakistan Today quoted Center for Social Justice Director Peter Jacob as saying, "Even though Christians have migrated overseas and converted to Islam, our church records make us suspect that Christians may have been undercounted by at least half a million. We're struggling to find accurate data, and somehow the government is not helping. It is not investigating".

India highlighted its concerns over Pakistan-based international terrorist groups at United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) meet. India raised flag over terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)

India's envoy to UN, Indra Mani Pandey said,""Stability in Afghanistan is linked to the peace and security of the region. We hope that the situation in Afghanistan does not pose a challenge to its neighbours and its territory is not used by terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), to threaten any other country."

Afghanistan has become unstable and thousands of people have been leaving the country ever since the Taliban took over Afghan national capital Kabul on August 15. Many of the Afghans who are leaving are worried over future under the Taliban rule.

Pandey hoped that "there is an inclusive and broad-based dispensation which represents all sections of Afghan society" & said that "voices of Afghan women, aspirations of Afghan children and the rights of minorities must be respected".

He explained, "A broad-based representation would help the arrangement gain more acceptability and legitimacy."

International community has largely called for the same -- inclusive set up, one that is not dominated by one ethnicity but has representation from everyone given Afghanistan is an ethnically diverse country.

Calling, the security situation "precarious" he said, a "grave humanitarian crisis is unfolding"

"Everyone is concerned about the increasing violations of fundamental rights of Afghan citizens" & "Afghans are worried about whether their right to live with dignity would be respected," he added.

Heartbreaking visuals have emerged over last few days from Afghanistan especially around the Kabul Airport. The airport has been thronged by people who want to flee the country.

India on its part has been evacuating hundreds of its nationals and many Afghan vulnerable groups like the minority Hindus and Sikhs. Over last few days India has brought more than 40 Afghan Sikhs to Delhi. In addition 3 copies of Sikh Holy Book 'Guru Granth Sahib' have also been brought. Union ministers, Hardeep Singh Puri & V Muraleedharan were at the airport to receive the Holy Books.

Indra Mani called on the international community to "ensure full support to the people of Afghanistan in their desire for peace, stability and security in the country and to enable all Afghans, including women, children and minorities, to live in peace and dignity."

He also pointed out to India's contribution to the country in the last 20 years in terms of humanitarian assistance, capacity building, connectivity. During the Covid crisis, India sent 75,000 MTs of wheat to Afghanistan to ensure food security during the pandemic.

Pakistan had a poor start against West Indies on the first day of the second Test in Jamaica after their top three batsmen failed to score runs and were down to 2 for 3. However, Babar Azam and Fawad Alam stitched a 166-run stand for the fourth wicket to rescue the visitors.

Former Pakistan skipper Ramiz Raja has expressed his disappointment in the top-order batsman. “Pakistan had a close shave against West Indies. They lost 3 wickets at a score of 2, they lost the last match. So, they needed a good beginning from the top-order which they couldn’t get,” Raja said in his YouTube video.

“Pakistan is facing an issue with their top-order in overseas tours for quite a long time now. And the reason is, they are not able to adjust. It’s a fact that pitches in Jamaica aren’t easy to bat. You couldn’t score until you acclimatize to the condition and make adjustments to your techniques. The top three produced a poor performance technically and their intent is getting challenged. When you give up upon that, it’s difficult to survive.

“Azhar Ali has played so many Test matches but he is yet to establish the balance at the crease. His reflexes are getting slower with age. He needs to do something in his last Test innings here and Pakistan would need him. Same goes with the openers. Unless they provide good starts, Pakistan can’t be a big team in Test cricket,” he added.

“Openers are considered the pillars of a team but that role is being played by captain Babar Azam and Fawad Alam. They batted brilliantly. They need to be applauded because it has become a norm that whenever the top-order fails, they come and get themselves to work. They were the reason Pakistan managed to avoid an embarrassing day,” Raja said.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday (August 17) announced the schedule of the Men's T20 World Cup 2021 as the high-octane event will get underway from 17 October. The final clash will be in Dubai on November 14 and a reserve day is also kept aside on November 15.

Pakistan batsman Imad Wasim has said that his team will be among the favourites to win the ICC T20 World Cup as they have a big home advantage playing in UAE.

“UAE’s conditions will suit as it is like a home ground for us, having played there for a long period of time. This is why we are also considered as one of the favourites for the tournament. We have skillful players who can take us deep in the championship so we will try to give our 100 per cent on the field,” Wasim was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

“We have two or three good series before that [T20 World Cup] and focused on winning that so that we head into the World Cup with rhythm and confidence,” he added.

Wasim went on to reveal that he was 'disappointing'.

“Losing the central contract was disappointing but ups and downs, with or without reason, are part and parcel of life. It was a difficult period for me and my family but the only way out of it is to perform well on the field and that is what I’m focused on doing,” he said.

“I want to play ODI cricket and I told everyone about it too. I have only played two or three ODIs since the 2019 World Cup and I don’t know why I was dropped from the side. But that’s the decision of the selectors, coaches and captain and I have to accept it. Although, I will continue playing domestic cricket [List A] and perform to the best of my ability,” he signed off.

“It has been more than a month, we have been protesting and rallying against the Chinese trawlers, shortage of water and electricity. The government never paid heed to our demands, and we had to observe a complete shutdown strike and we were attacked by the district administration,” said Faiz Nigori, a local political worker.

However, these protests were met with violent clashes from the local police who cracked down on the demonstrators, injuring at least two people.

In what brings to light the rising violence against women in Pakistan, a case has been registered by police in Lahore on Tuesday against hundreds of unidentified persons for assaulting and stealing from a woman and her companions at the city's Greater Iqbal Park on August 14, the Independence Day. The incident also raises several questions over women’s freedom and safety in Pakistan. The woman has been identified as a TikToker. Netizens have also reacted with rage to a video of the incident, which was being circulated on social media. The first information report (FIR) has been registered at the Lorry Adda police station, a Dawn report said. In the FIR, the complainant shared that she and her six companions were attacked by around 300 to 400 people while filming a video near Minar-e-Pakistan on Independence Day. The woman and her companions made several efforts to avert the crowd but to no avail. "People were pushing and pulling me to the extent that they tore my clothes. Several people tried to help me but the crowd was too huge and they kept throwing me in the air," she said. Her companions were also assaulted while her ring and earrings were "forcibly taken" along with a mobile phone of one of her companions, his identity card and Rs 15,000 that he had with him, the woman said. Pakistani politicians and celebrities have slammed the incident. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman, PPP tweeted: "The assault of a young women by a mob at #minarepakistan should shame every Pakistani. It speaks to a rot in our society. Those responsible must be brought to justice. The women of Pakistan feel insecure and it is all our responsibility to ensure safety and equal rights to all.
