In order to commemorate the sacrifices made by soldiers in the war where the Indian Army recaptured all the Indian posts in Kargil that had been occupied by Pakistan's army, July 26 every year is observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas.

The conflict is believed to have been orchestrated by the then Pakistan army chief General Pervez Musharraf without the knowledge of the then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The war took place between May and July of 1999 in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil district.

Based on information provided by local shepherds, the Indian Army was able to ascertain the points of incursion and launch what is termed as 'Operation Vijay'.

It started when on May 2, 1999, a man called Tashi Namgyal, a local shepherd living in a small village called Gharkon near mountainous Batalik town of Kargil spotted six men breaking stones and clearing the snow when he was looking for his list Yak.

This was unusual for Tashi as he saw no footprints leading to the spot and it was clear that they had come from the other side.

The men wore Pathani dress and army uniforms, few of them carried weapons too.

Tashi was the first to report the infiltration in Kargil to the army and it was after his information that a team was sent to scan the area. What the group of 20-25 Indian army men found was surprising...men with arms and ammunition getting ready. On his information, the Indian army moved quickly and minimised the possible damage.

"Operation Vijay was a perfect blend of strong and determined political, military and diplomatic actions which enabled us to transform an adverse situation into a military and diplomatic victory," VP Malik who was the Army Chief during Kargil War summed up in a 2002 article.

The Pakistan army has started to man the front-line positions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said. The decision has been taken in wake of the volatile situation across the border.

Pakistan has moved the Frontier Constabulary, Levies Force and other militias from the positions. The FC Balochistan and other militias, who were working under the interior ministry, have been called back. They used to conduct border patrolling.

“Now, regular army troops are manning the border after replacing the paramilitary forces,” the minister said, according to a Dawn report.

The situation not only demands containment of influx of Afghan refugees from across the border but also the entry of armed security personnel and militants into Pakistan, Ahmed said.

Earlier, Pakistan allowed "up to 4,000 Afghans" cross into Afghanistan through its border. The strategic town across the border in Afghanistan is held by Taliban. AFP quoted a border official as saying that the move was taken on "humanitarian grounds".

Pakistan partially opened its southern crossing on Saturday. Thousands of Afghans were left stranded in the Pakistani town of Chaman after militants captured Spin Boldak from Kabul's forces on Wednesday.

"We have opened the Chaman border... allowing crowds of up to 4,000 Afghans including women and children to cross over to Afghanistan to celebrate Eid al-Adha with their families, purely on humanitarian grounds," a border official, who did not want to be named, told AFP.

People would be allowed to cross until the evening, with the possibility the border would open again tomorrow, the official added.

Muhammad Tayyab, a local paramilitary official, said the decision was taken because of "relative calm on the other side", but said the crossing would remain closed to trade.

An AFP photographer said the gates were rushed by families as soon as they opened.

At first, Pakistan had claimed the blast might have been due to a mechanical failure that would have led to a gas leak. However, China is not satisfied with the diagnosis and has called it a 'bombing' caused in a "terrorist attack".

Chinese public security minister, Zhao Kezhi, had an interaction with his Pakistan counterpart. "China and Pakistan will work together to find out the truth," Kezhi said. China has "sent technical experts in criminal investigation to Pakistan to assist in the investigation."

China has urged Pakistan to "severely punish" the people behind the bus explosion. The authorities have asked Pakistan government to "earnestly protect" all Chinese nationals and projects in the South Asian country.

The investigation team has been sent to Pakistan after Pakistan's Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday "confirmed" traces of explosives.
