As thousands of followers from Pakistan's far-right islamist group gathered in Lahore, the situation quickly turned violent. A car rammed through the security officers, killing at least 3 police personnel and leaving many wounded. Clashes between Tehrik-e-Labaik Pakistan and the forces led to further injuries. Police fired tear gas in defence. But TLP officials allege that the security forces attacked a peaceful rally. The violent clashes come after negotiations between authorities and the banned group broke down.

At least 3 police personnel killed in Lahore clashes

At least two Pakistani policemen were killed on Friday in clashes with supporters of a banned radical Islamist party, which has previously called for the expulsion of the French ambassador.

More than 1,000 people gathered in the eastern city of Lahore, blocking roads and demanding the release of the Tehreek-Labbaik Pakistan leader, Saad Rizvi.

Rizvi was arrested in April, when Pakistan's government outlawed the party in response to violent anti-France protests.

"Two police constables were killed today in the line of duty during clashes," Rana Arif, a spokesman for Lahore police, told AFP.

Mazhar Hussain, a second police official, said protesters had hurled petrol bombs at officers when they moved in to clear the protest.

"The mob also used sticks and pelted police with stones," he said.

The TLP has said it will not end protests or enter into talks with the government until their leader is released.

Supporters have threatened to move in convoys towards the capital Islamabad, where police have closed off roads with shipping containers.

The TLP has waged an anti-France campaign since President Emmanuel Macron defended the right of a satirical magazine to republish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed -- an act deemed blasphemous by many Muslims.

Six police officers were killed in April, when the TLP staged days of rallies which paralysed roads.

It led to the French embassy recommending all of its citizens leave the country.

The group has previously received widespread support from mainstream religious groups, complicating government efforts to crack down on the party.

Few issues are as galvanising in Pakistan as blasphemy, and even the slightest suggestion of an insult to Islam can supercharge protests, incite lynchings, and unite the country's warring political parties.

India has slipped to 101st position in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021 of 116 countries, from its 2020 position of 94th and is behind its neighbours Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Eighteen countries, including China, Brazil and Kuwait, shared the top rank with GHI score of less than five, the website of the Global Hunger Index that tracks hunger and malnutrition said on Thursday.

The report, prepared jointly by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organisation Welt Hunger Hilfe, termed the level of hunger in India "alarming".

In 2020, India was ranked 94th out of 107 countries. Now with 116 countries in the fray, it has dropped to 101st rank.

India's GHI score has also decelerated -- from 38.8 in 2000 to the range of 28.8 - 27.5 between 2012 and 2021.

The GHI score is calculated on four indicators --undernourishment; child wasting (the share of children under the age of five who are wasted i.e who have low weight for their height, reflecting acute undernutrition); child stunting (children under the age of five who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition) and child mortality (the mortality rate of children under the age of five).

The share of wasting among children in India rose from 17.1 per cent between 1998-2002 to 17.3 per cent between 2016-2020, according to the report.

"People have been severely hit by COVID-19 and by pandemic related restrictions in India, the country with highest child wasting rate worldwide," the report said.

Neighbouring countries like Nepal (76), Bangladesh (76), Myanmar (71) and Pakistan (92) are also in the 'alarming' hunger category, but have fared better at feeding its citizens than India, according to the report.

Also Read | Pollution has started increasing, says Delhi CM Kejriwal as air quality index reaches 171 The report, prepared jointly by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organisation Welt Hunger Hilfe, termed the level of hunger in India "alarming". However, international cricket returned to Pakistan for the first time since 2009 when Zimbabwe toured the country in 2015. Since then, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been striving hard to host international cricket regularly in the country but have struggled to do so.

The decision was taken in the ACC meeting in Dubai on Thursday (October 15) where PCB was represented by chairman Raja. While the 2023 edition of the Asia Cup will be played in ODI format, the 2022 edition will be a T20 event to be hosted by Sri Lanka next year.

The 2023 Asia Cup will be the 16th edition of the tournament. The 15th edition was originally scheduled to be played last year but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pakistan had the hosting rights for the 15th edition, however, BCCI had expressed its concerns over sending the Indian team to the country and had requested the PCB to shift the tournament to UAE.
