India skipper Shubman Gill has identified pacers Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi as the bowlers who will be part of the ODI mix ahead of the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup. India batter Rohit Sharma shares 'immediate goal' ahead of ODI World Cup 2027 chances

The ODI World Cup 2027 is nearly a year away, and India, who were the runners-up in the last edition in 2023, is looking to identify players in the series leading up to the tournament. One of the choices that India must make is between Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja. Both players bowl left-arm orthodox spin and bat in the lower-middle order. Jadeja, however, is a better fielder than Axar and has more experience as well. India spin coach Sairaj Bahutule - on the eve of the second ODI against West Indies, which is scheduled for Wednesday (Sept. 30) in Guwahati - said in a press conference that the team will pick a player with more 'utility.'<h2>India spin coach Bahutule chimes in on Axar vs. Jadeja debate for ODI World Cup 2027</h2>Speaking to reporters in Guwahati on Tuesday (Sept. 29), Bahutule said: "For me, he [Jadeja] has always been a utility player. He is somebody who can contribute with the bat as well as with the ball. He has definitely improved as a bowler over the last six months. I thought in the Test matches he bowled really well in Sri Lanka, as well as now in the first one-dayer. In the first ODI against West Indies, Jadeja returned figures of 0/54 in 10 overs. As for Axar, he has taken eight wickets in his last six ODIs with a bowling average of 30.87, which is better than his career average of 32.73.

West Indies coach Daren Sammy is looking at the upcoming ODI series against India as an opportunity to fine-tune the team ahead of their ODI World Cup 2027 qualifiers in February. David Miller, a cricket veteran of over 300 international white-ball matches, is closing in on the end of his career. But before he decides to hang up his boots, Miller wants to realise his dream of winning an ODI World Cup, scheduled for late 2027 in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Despite representing the Proteas at the top level for over a decade now, Miller has yet to lift an ICC trophy—as a white-ball specialist, he was not part of South Africa’s 2025 World Test Championship-winning side. &nbsp;Already 37, Miller wants to finish his celebrated cricket career on a high, and there would be no better way than winning a home ODI World Cup in 2027.&nbsp;Also read| <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ind-vs-afg-t20i-series-delhi-schedule-bangladesh-tour-doubtful-1786537182710">Afghanistan to host India for 3 T20Is in Delhi as Bangladesh tour 'doubtful'; details inside</a> &nbsp;“I am really looking forward to it (the ODI WC),” Miller said in a chat with JioStar. &nbsp;“For me, it’s a goal that I want to achieve. It’s something that is never guaranteed, and I’ll definitely, from now until then, be focused on aiming to make that team and to contribute the best I can. I think there was a lot at stake there, and it kind of set my career up if I look back at it now. Then there was another knock that I’ll always remember as well, the one in Durban against Australia. We chased down a score there as well, and I scored a hundred, 118 not out or something. So, those two knocks under pressure, scoring hundreds, they’ll always kind of stand out,” he continued. &nbsp;Meanwhile, upon being asked about his favourite moment in the league, Miller picked winning his maiden IPL title with the then-tournament debutants, Gujarat Titans, in the 2022 season.&nbsp;&nbsp;“My favourite moment in the IPL…there have been many, but we obviously play to win, so definitely winning the IPL for Gujarat Titans would be that," he continued.

Indian cricket is working towards its next goal - the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 - and Rohit Sharma is one name keeping the selectors and the team management thinking. ICC unveils 'Super Series' and 'Super 7' format for ODI World Cup 2027

Since the rise of T20 cricket, the 50-over format has been feeling the heat. The ODIs are now considered long and being questioned about its relativity in today's fast-paced world. In order to ensure that format stays relevant, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is mulling bringing back ODI Super League. The 13-team tournament, which was scrapped following 2023 ODI World Cup, however, won't be able to make a comeback before 2028 because of packed international calendars. The discussion around it happened at the recently-concluded ICC meeting and the topic is expected to be a part of upcoming meeting as well.<h2>What is ODI Super League?</h2>The tournament was only played once, after 2019 ODI World Cup, and served as the qualifier for the ODI World Cup 2023. A total 13 teams - 12 full members and Netherlands - took part in the tournament. Each team had to play against eight of 12 opponents - which meant eight series for each team - four away and four at home. Each series was of three ODIs. Top seven of the league directly qualified for the ODI World Cup 2023 while the bottom five went to another stage of qualifiers. Also Read - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/two-tier-system-in-next-wtc-cycle-unlikely-after-idea-fails-to-get-support-in-icc-meet-1762919490872">Two-tier system in next WTC cycle unlikely after idea fails to get support in ICC meet</a><h2>Relevance of ODI Super League revival</h2>With the ODIs already finding it hard to get a place in a crammed international calendar, the tournament might be able to keep the format alive amid competition from shorter formats. With ODI World Cup qualification as rewards, the teams are also expected to take the league seriously and send their best players to take part."The Super League could help revitalise the 50-over format," one administrator said as reported by ESPNCricinfo. "Maybe the problem is not that the format is necessarily dead, it's finding the proper structure."

The tournament was only played once, after 2019 ODI World Cup, and served as the qualifier for the ODI World Cup 2023. A total 13 teams - 12 full members and Netherlands - took part in the tournament. Each team had to play against eight of 12 opponents - which meant eight series for each team - four away and four at home.

The discussion around it happened at the recently-concluded ICC meeting and the topic is expected to be a part of upcoming meeting as well. What is ODI Super League? A total 13 teams - 12 full members and Netherlands - took part in the tournament. Each team had to play against eight of 12 opponents - which meant eight series for each team - four away and four at home. Each series was of three ODIs. Top seven of the league directly qualified for the ODI World Cup 2023 while the bottom five went to another stage of qualifiers. With ODI World Cup qualification as rewards, the teams are also expected to take the league seriously and send their best players to take part. "The Super League could help revitalise the 50-over format," one administrator said as reported by ESPNCricinfo. "Maybe the problem is not that the format is necessarily dead, it's finding the proper structure."

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar says that decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill as India's ODI skipper was the right call. The decision came on Saturday (Oct 4) when the BCCI announced the ODI and and T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Australia which starts October 19. The change was made keeping ODI World Cup 2027 in mind by which Rohit would be hitting 40 years mark.
