Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has picked up five fast bowlers across teams whom he expects to perform well in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. The quadrennial event starting four days later on October 5 is being held in India and the pitches are expected to help spinners more.

Steyn, nonetheless, believes that Shaheen Afridi from Pakistan, Kagiso Rabada from South Africa, Mohammed Siraj from India, Mark Wood from England and Trent Boult from New Zealand will be able to leave a mark in the tournament. Steyn made the prediction in a video released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Instagram. Have a look at the video here:

Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn picks THESE FIVE bowlers to perform well in ODI World Cup

India leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was one of the strong contenders to be included in the ODI World Cup squad but unfortunately missed out when the initial 15-man team was announced. An injury to Axar Patel in the Asia Cup 2023 opened up another chance for him but the slot went to veteran off spinner Ravi Ashwin.

The leg-spinner did feel a bit bad but believes in moving on in life. Chahal made the comments while speaking to Wisden India on his snub from India's ODI World Cup squad.

“I understand that only fifteen players can be a part, because it’s a World Cup, where you can’t take 17 or 18,” Chahal said. “I do feel a little bad, but my motto in life is to move on. I’m used to it now… it’s been three World Cups (laughs). ”

Talking about the competitiveness among his peers for a spot in the team, Chahal said that he doesn't think too much about it and that he's confident of playing if he performs well.

“I don’t think too much in that sense, because I know if I perform well, I’ll play,” Chahal said. “Someone or the other will eventually replace you in the future. That time will come someday.

“I take up the challenge in this way: definitely, they are doing well and I appreciate that. The main goal is that India should win, because this is not an individual game. If I am part of the team or not, they are like my brothers. Obviously, I support India. I like the challenge: it tells me I need to work hard so that I come back,” added the leggie.

Chahal made his ODI debut for India in 2016 and has played 72 games so far, taking 121 wickets including a couple of five-wicket hauls.

'I’m used to it,' says Yuzvendra Chahal about India's ODI World Cup squad snub

Australia bowler Mitchell Starc took a hat-trick in the ODI World Cup warm-up game against Netherlands on September 30, showing that he's fully fit ahead of the quadrennial event. The game in Thiruvananthapuram was marred by rain but Starc's show will inject a lot of confidence in the Australian side who are dealing with a couple of injuries.

Starc bowled the first over in the Dutch chase, taking two wickets on the last two balls of the over before coming back and taking the third wicket on the first ball of his next over. The left-arm pace bowler dismissed Dutchmen Max O'Dowd, Wesley Barresi, and Bas de Leede off consecutive balls across two overs to register the hat-trick. Have a look at the wickets here:

Australia bowler Mitchell Starc took a hat-trick in the ODI World Cup warm-up game against Netherlands on September 30, showing that he's fully fit ahead of the quadrennial event.

Both teams playing in their first warm-up match, the eyes of the world were cast on big boys like Jos Buttler, Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes and Rohit Sharma. However, rain was the feature of the day with both camps unable to warm up on a wet day in Guwahati. Scheduled to start at 2:30 PM, the umpires after close inspection of conditions and heavy drizzling, decided to abandon the match at 5:40 PM IST.

While big names were expected to play in the match, the focus was also on the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Harry Brook. Both stars were initially omitted from the provisional squad but made the cut for the final 15-member squad. Ashwin returned to the ODI fold in the Australia series earlier in the month while Brook was favoured ahead of Jason Roy in the England squad. Roy played a pivotal role in England’s 2019 World Cup success but missed out due to a reported injury.

Earlier, England’s Jonny Bairstow showed his displeasure traveling to Guwahati as it took them 38 hours to reach the destination after multiple flights. With the contest washed out, this only added to the English team’s frustration as they will now have only one game to prepare before the main tournament gets underway.

The abandoned match now leaves both India and England with one warm-up match against the Netherlands and Bangladesh respectively. India will take on the Dutch on Tuesday, October 3 while England will take on Bangladesh on Monday. The defending champions will then face New Zealand in the curtain-raiser contest on Thursday in a repeat of the 2019 edition’s final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India vs England ODI World Cup warm-up contest called off as rain plays spoilsport in Guwahati

Legendary Sri Lanka bowler Muttiah Muralitharan has backed hosts India and defending champions England to clinch glory in the upcoming ODI World Cup as the preparations are in the final stage. Murali, the only bowler to pick 800 wickets in Test cricket, will launch his biopic 800 in the first week of October and was recently in India. Murali also backed Australia as another team to watch out for as they have all the tools in the arsenal to clinch World Cup glory.

“I would say India, England, Australia, and the fourth team can be anyone. These three have more chances. But you never know, cricket is all about luck. As seen in the last World Cup, we thought that New Zealand would win and England won the trophy with luck favouring them,” Murali said during the pre-launch interview.

Speaking on the advantage sub-continent teams could have, Murali believes India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan can have a big impact. India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka made it to the last four in the 2011 edition when the World Cup was last held in India. In 1996, India and Sri Lanka were in the semifinals while the former was in the semifinals in 1987.

“Definitely, the teams from the subcontinent will get an advantage because of the spin-friendly wickets, and their batters are used to playing spin,” Murali added.

ODI World Cup: Sri Lanka legend backs India, England to clinch glory, considers Australia a strong contender

India's veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made a last-minute entry into the ODI World Cup squad and he is now focused on enjoying the tournament. Ashwin was included in the India squad as a replacement of Axar Patel who unfortunately got injured in the Asia Cup 2023.

While Ashwin did well in the two games he played against Australia in the three-match ODI series after the Asia Cup, the bowler said that dealing with pressure is paramount in the World Cup. Notably, Ashwin took four wickets in two games he played against Australia, including a three-wicket haul in the second ODI.

Speaking on the sidelines of India's warm-up game against England on September 30, Ashwin, however, said that he did not think to be in the World Cup squad.

"I would have said that you were joking. Life is full of surprises. Honestly did not think I would be here. Circumstances have made sure I am here today, the team management have shown trust," said Ashwin when asked if he thought he'd playing in the World Cup.

The ace spinner also talked about if he has any new variation up his sleeve and that this could be his last appearance in the World Cup.

"All you can do is turn the ball both ways, and I think I can do it. Dealing with pressure is paramount in these tournaments and it will dictate how the tournament goes. Being in a good space, enjoying this tournament will keep me in good stead. This could be my last World Cup for India, so enjoying the tournament is of utmost importance," added Ashwin.

Notably, Ashwin is only one of the two India players to feature in both 2011 and 2023 World Cup squad with the other one being Virat Kohli. The bowler, who made his ODI debut for India in 2010, has 155 wickets to his name in 115 games.

Ravi Ashwin talks about 'thing of utmost importance' in his possibly 'last ODI World Cup'

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson's fifty in warm-up game against Pakistan injected a lot of confidence in Kiwi team's ODI World Cup campaign. Williamson, who had injured his ACL in IPL 2023, scored a fifty, although not fluent but enough to set up a successful run-chase of 346 runs. It's a massive boost for Blackcaps' plans who had taken the risk of including injured Williamson in the squad. The skipper, however, won't be playing the opening fixture against England but hopes to play afterwards.

"Just great to get through some batting out in the middle and be part of a match, which was really nice and it [knee] held up pretty well," Williamson said after New Zealand won the game. "[It needed] a little bit of icing afterwards but it's all part of the process. Yeah, it wasn't a reality certainly five months ago and [I've] been quite fortunate with some of that recovery and to be named in the squad is really exciting for me and just really looking forward to getting out there again. It was nice to do that today (September 29)."

"It was largely pretty good, which was pleasing. Nice to sort of build on that. It was a fantastic hit-out obviously. Pakistan are an outstanding side. I mean both teams were trying to get what they wanted out of it, in terms of bowlers getting overs they needed and time in the legs. So, it's an exercise, but also nice to compete and do all those things. As a bowling unit and batting unit, plenty to take away from it. There's always things to work on and it was a great batting performance today. It was a really good surface and it's nice that we were able to put together partnerships and get time in the middle," added Williamson.

The Kiwi skipper also aims to take to larger part in New Zealand's second warm-up game against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on October 2.

Williamson, New Zealand make statement

Asked to chase 346 to win, the Blackcaps did not have the best starts as experienced Devon Conway was dismissed for a golden duck in the second over. However, Rachin Ravindra (97) and Williamson (54) then led the foundation for New Zealand’s excellent run chase. Williamson looked in great nick but called it a day after scoring the fifty. He retired hurt on 54 after the conclusion of the 18th over, paving the way for other batters to chip in important playing time before the World Cup.

Later, New Zealand built their innings and looked in total control of the run chase as Daryl Mitchell (59) joined Ravindra in the middle. Ravindra, though was unfortunate to have not completed his hundred as he was dismissed for 97 by Agha Salman. Like Williamson, Mitchell also retired hurt to give playing time to others.

Kane Williamson scores fifty in statement New Zealand win against Pakistan in ODI World Cup warm-up contest

Shubman Gill has been in exceptional form in 2023. The right-hander has had a dream run across formats, slamming his maiden T20I ton as well, but his form in ODIs made heads turn. The opener has so far slammed as many as five centuries this year and enters the forthcoming ODI World Cup as the No. 2 ranked batter in ICC ODI Rankings. The star opener ended as the Player-of-the-Series in India's three ODIs versus Australia, which ended on Wednesday (September 27), and will start the 50-over mega event on a positive note.

Ahead of India's CWC 2023 opener, where they lock horns with Australia on October 8 in Chennai, former Indian all-rounder and 2011 World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh has made a bold claim on his statesman. Yuvraj feels Gill has it in him to become the 'best player of this generation'.

Speaking to The Week, Yuvraj was all praise for the talented opener and said, "Shubman Gill has the potential to become the best player of this generation. The guy works hard. Since he was 19-20, his attitude has always been like that. He works four times harder than a normal guy since he was a kid. Whatever I have worked with him, he can be the player of this era."

"He (Gill) scored 91 in a Test match which India won (versus Australia in Gabba). He scored two fifties as well on his first tour to Australia which I don't know how many players have done. I am sure he will score runs in Australia, South Africa as well as England."

Whatever I have worked with him, he can be the player of this era." "He (Gill) scored 91 in a Test match which India won (versus Australia in Gabba). He scored two fifties as well on his first tour to Australia which I don't know how many players have done. I am sure he will score runs in Australia, South Africa as well as England." Also read: CWC 2023: Will R Ashwin get a game vs Australia? Shubman Gill has potential to become best player of this generation: Yuvraj Singh's BIG claim ahead of CWC '23

India will enter the ODI World Cup 2023 as a very strong contender to win the title. The home side, under Rohit Sharma, won the Asia Cup last month and won the three ODI series versus Australia 2-1, at home, which concluded on Wednesday (September 27). Rohit Sharma-led Team India will kick off their World Cup campaign on October 8 when they face Australia in their respective openers in Chennai. Ahead of the Chennai battle, former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan discussed India's playing XI for the Australia clash.

Gavaskar has backed captain Rohit, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, vice-captain Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja as the top seven whereas named Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah as the frontline bowlers. Thus, his XI doesn't have R Ashwin -- who was included in India's final 15 after Axar Patel got ruled out on Thursday (September 28) -- but the Little Master feels the 37-year-old could be added if India go ahead with three spinners.

Speaking on Star Sports, he said, "You can pick three fast bowlers in Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah or else can pick two fast bowlers because you also have Hardik Pandya then Ashwin will definitely be there."

On the other hand, former all-rounder Irfan stated, "I completely agree with the top 7. But it boils down to the bowling department. I want India to play five proper bowlers. Since you have Hardik as the sixth bowler you should go with bowlers having wicket-taking abilities. It is because the pitches India will get now will have dew factor involved so then you need to have a solid bowling line-up. So you either pick three pacers or if you feel like you want to get someone to accompany Kuldeep Yadav and Jadeja...on a turning track, and if Ashwin is good enough the pick him."

CWC 2023: Will R Ashwin get a game vs Australia? Sunil Gavaskar, Irfan Pathan pick India's XI for opening game

Former India star Yuvraj Singh has highlighted key factors in India’s ODI World Cup squad as the Men in Blue prepare for the marquee tournament. Yuvraj, Player of the Tournament in the 2011 edition, reckons India will miss the services of Yuzvendra Chahal who was not picked for the tournament. Chahal was dropped in favour of Ravichandran Ashwin, who will be part of the 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup after Axar Patel got injured.

Chahal could be a big miss

“Leaving out Yuzvendra Chahal could be a mistake, could be a worry. At least could have kept him in the squad. A leg-spinner is someone who will always take wickets for you. Kuldeep is doing fantastic. But Chahal could have been dangerous on turning tracks and slower wickets. Hardik giving you the balance of a third seamer, you could have picked Yuzvendra Chahal,” said Yuvraj while speaking to the Week.

India on Thursday, September 28 announced their final squad for the ODI World Cup that saw the return of Ashwin in place of Axar. However, despite being an integral part of the team in recent months, Chahal was dropped while Ashwin was drafted in the final squad. The experienced campaigner was part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad but had not played in the ODI format since January 2022. He was picked in the Indian team for the Australia series before the World Cup and will now apply his trade in the main tournament.

The numbers game favours Chahal in the limited-overs format, having scalped 121 wickets in 72 ODI matches for India while Ashwin has 155 wickets in 115 matches. Ashwin has been India’s best Test bowler in the last decade and has amassed 489 wickets in the longer format. In the T20I format, Chahal leads the list for most wickets with 96 for India while Ashwin stands with 72 scalps.

Considering Ashwin’s ability to bat, the team management has opted for a safer choice in Ashwin compared to Chahal. The Indian team will now look to reap rewards on the bigger front when they start their World Cup campaign against Australia on Sunday, October 8 in Ashwin’s hometown Chennai. India, however, will start their warm-up campaign against England on Saturday, September 30.

ODI World Cup: Bangladesh dealt blow in preparations, skipper Shakib Al Hasan likely to miss opener - Reports

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has backed KL Rahul to bat at No. 4 during the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup at home. Rahul has been in superb form ever since he returned to international cricket during Asia Cup 2023 following a lengthy injury layoff. He scored a brilliant 111 not out versus Pakistan in the Super Four round, followed by a vital 39 versus Sri Lanka. In the recently-concluded India-Australia ODIs, Rahul returned with 58 not out, 52 and 26. He has batted at No. 4 in four out of the last seven games and Yuvraj has backed him to bat at the crucial spot in the mega event.

Speaking to the Week, Yuvraj suggested that India should make Rahul bat at No. 4 and give him 15-20 games at that position. “India want K.L. Rahul to bat at No. 4 now. They have to give him 15-20 games in that position. In the Asia Cup, coming back from injury, he scored a 100. On a spinning track [in Colombo, against Sri Lanka] he scored a vital 39 runs. He is looking good right now, so they need to stick with him at No. 4," the 2011 ODI World Cup winner said.

Yuvraj highlighted the important of the No. 4 spot, which has been India's Achilles heel since the last edition of the 50-over World Cup. He added, "No. 4 is a crucial position, especially if the openers get out cheaply. No. 4 batsman needs to have the technique to leave the ball, play the short ball well, and try and build partnerships.”

The 41-year-old batted at No. 4 in 108 matches during his illustrious career and understands the importance of the position. Speaking about India's batting order, it might be tough for Rahul to bat at No. 4 as Shreyas Iyer has been looked upon to fulfill the role at the said spot. Rahul, meanwhile, will most likely bat at No. 5 throughout the upcoming ODI World Cup. He has fared brilliantly at No. 4 and 5.

At No. 4, Rahul averages an exceptional 60 and 50 at No. 5. Such has been his performance at both the positions that he effortlessly fits in the middle-order. Thus, he will be an important player for India in the upcoming showpiece event.

World Cup 2023: India need to stick with KL Rahul at No. 4, feels 2011 WC winner Yuvraj Singh

Rohit Sharma-led India is gearing up for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, which gets underway on October 5 in Ahmedabad. India will look to win the coveted trophy for the third time, second as hosts. In the 2011 ODI World Cup, MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue had a memorable campaign as they beat Sri Lanka, who were also the co-hosts, in the final to win by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 2. However, it wasn't a smooth run for Team India, who didn't win it easy versus the Netherlands and Ireland and lost to South Africa in the group stage.

India started the tournament by beating Bangladesh convincingly in the tournament-opener, played a tied game versus England, won against Ireland and the Netherlands but not comprehensively, and lost a close game versus South Africa before getting on a winning streak to eventually lift the coveted title. Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who ended as the Player-of-the-Series with 362 runs and 15 wickets, recalled Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's advice after Dhoni & Co.'s three-wicket loss to the Proteas, in Nagpur, defending 297.

As quoted by Hindustan Times, Yuvraj said, "Now, distraction is a bit more because that time there was no social media. There was distraction with media and people. We were trying to focus on the game, and in the world cup, we had lost to South Africa - a game we should have won. The media started to go berserk. Sachin sat down with the team and said, 'we need to stop watching television, stop reading the papers. Use our headphones when we are going through crowds in airports. Just focus on the world cup'. The team agreed, we just followed that and it really worked."

He added, "Because there's anyway so much pressure. Problem with India is that, people think only the Indian team will win. It's a big World Cup, there are so many good teams out there, and we got to be really focussed on your tasks at hand."

Tendulkar's words did the trick for India, who went on to beat West Indies, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively, to lift the title after the SA setback. He had a stellar run in the 2011 edition, ending with 482 runs with two centuries (second-most overall). Rohit Sharma-led India is gearing up for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, which gets underway on October 5 in Ahmedabad. India will look to win the coveted trophy for the third time, second as hosts.

The team agreed, we just followed that and it really worked." Problem with India is that, people think only the Indian team will win. It's a big World Cup, there are so many good teams out there, and we got to be really focussed on your tasks at hand." Tendulkar's words did the trick for India, who went on to beat West Indies, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively, to lift the title after the SA setback. He had a stellar run in the 2011 edition, ending with 482 runs with two centuries (second-most overall). It was his last appearance in the ODI World Cup, his sixth overall, where India returned with the title after 28 years. Will Rohit & Co. replicate Dhoni-led India's 2011 heroics? 'We need to stop...': Yuvraj Singh recalls Sachin Tendulkar's advice after SA loss during CWC '11

Despite losing the third and final ODI, on Wednesday (September 27), India had a lot of positives coming out from their just-concluded three ODIs versus Australia at home. In their last series prior to the CWC 2023 edition, which starts on October 05, India tested their benched players once again and also gave two games to R Ashwin, who returned to the ODI setup after a long gap -- having played his last in early 2022 -- with Axar Patel being injured during the Asia Cup.

Ashwin replaced Axar -- who is dealing with a left quadriceps strain -- and played the opening two encounters to account for four wickets. He looked in good rhythm but suspense persists regarding his World Cup spot as no official update has come on Axar's fitness. All teams have to announce their final 15 prior to September 28 and any changes after that date would need approval from the ICC. With suspense continuing on Ashwin's place, head coach Rahul Dravid revealed there are 'no changes' as of now on the final 15, which was announced early this month.

“We have to wait for an official confirmation or a decision on that. The NCA is in touch with the selectors and Ajit (Agarkar) so I will not make any comments on that. If there is any change you will get to hear about it officially, as of now there are no changes," Dravid said in a press conference after the India-Australia ODIs on Wednesday.

After the Rajkot ODI, Dravid stated that he is 'really happy' with how things have shaped up for Team India with regard to their CWC 2023 preparations. "Jasprit got a couple of games, and bowled his quota of 10 overs. Siraj suffered from a bug but got back and was able to bowl today. It was good to see how Ashwin bowled in the first two games. KL and his keeping through 50 overs, returning after 6 months, has been great. Shreyas has got some good knocks in the last couple of games. Really happy with how things are going and hopefully we can keep the momentum going into the World Cup."

Dravid added, "There are always areas you want to improve on, and we have ticked a lot of boxes. It's nice to see that the guys who have been out with injury, been away from a while, from our perspective, they've been able to get some good cricket, been able to spend time in the middle, get some runs, take some wickets, but there are always little things that you can improve."

'As of now....': Rahul Dravid on whether R Ashwin will be part of India's CWC '23 squad

With the ODI World Cup nearing, here is a list of players with the fastest hundreds in the ODI World Cup. Down the years players like Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith, and others have made their mark in the tournament but Ireland’s Kevin O'Brien leads the chart ahead of some of the greats of the game.

World Cup 2023: List of Players with Fastest ODI Hundreds | Records

Rohit Sharma-led India had a chance to inflict a whitewash over Australia when both sides met in the third and final ODI, in Rajkot, on Wednesday (September 27). However, the Men in Blue lost by 66 runs in a high-scoring contest to win the series 2-1 heading into the home ODI World Cup. During their 353-run chase, Rohit (81) and Virat Kohli (56) did well but couldn't capitalise on their starts as India were bundled out for 286 in 49.4 overs.

Despite Kohli missing out on another century in the format, he equalled Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's elite record. The 34-year-old right-hander became only the second batter in the world to complete 5,500 runs at home in the shorter format. Tendulkar ended his illustrious career -- with 34,000 runs and 100 centuries overall -- with 6,976 ODI runs while playing on home soil.

Kohli's home ODI runs stand at 5,503. Last month, he broke Tendulkar's record of becoming the fastest to 13,000 ODI runs. In addition, he went past the former batter's century tally (20) at home. Kohli has the most number of ODI tons while playing at home (21).

After India's loss, captain Rohit didn't read much into the result and has backed his side for the upcoming ODI World Cup. At the post-match presentation, he said, "The last 7-8 ODIs we have played really well, we have been challenged under different conditions and different teams, I thought we responded to that challenge pretty well. Unfortunately not the result we wanted today. When we talk about the 15 we are very clear what we want. We are not confused, we know where we are headed as a team. It's a team sport and we want everyone to come and play their part - that's how we win championships. It's about looking after the body and try and stay fresh for the next one and half months."

The cricketing world is awaiting the start of the ICC ODI World Cup in India, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Defending champions England, India, five-time winners Australia and Pakistan are considered as the pre-tournament favourites but the likes of South Africa, New Zealand and Sri Lanka are also in form and can be deemed as the darkhorses of the mega event.

Talking about the Proteas, they have made the last four in alternate editions of the World Cup since their readmission in 1992. After missing out on a semi-final berth in the last edition in 2019, in England and Wales, the No. 4 ranked Temba Bavuma-led side are one of the serious contenders to make it to the last four, even if many won't consider them as outright favourites. However, premier pacer Kagiso Rabada feels his national side 'believes' it can win the coveted title as well.

"One thing we have never lacked as South Africans is belief, so going into the tournament we do believe we can win it," Rabada was quoted as saying by ICC.

"We've got the players to do so, so hopefully we can make our first final and win this competition. It's going to be hard, but it's going to be really enjoyable. It's exciting to have the best players in the world playing against each other, competing for one prize, and we are up for the challenge," he opined.

Shakib Al Hasan opens up on international retirement, but claims will not hang up boots after ODI World Cup

World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic is a six-time winner of the Rome Masters but on Wednesday he swapped his racket for a set of golf clubs to appear in the All Star Match in the build-up to the 44th Ryder Cup.

The Serbian, who claimed a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title by winning the U.S. Open this month, was playing alongside world number one golfer with disabilities Kipp Popert as part of Colin Montgomerie's team which also featured Gareth Bale.

"It's such an honour, a golden opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience," the nervous-looking 36-year-old said on the first tee surrounded by an enormous grandstand. "Thanks to all the fans for coming and putting a bit of extra pressure on us on the first tee. It's a unique experience."

With hundreds of fans in the stands and many more lining the fairway, Djokovic initially walked out to address his ball with a tennis racket, before switching to a driver. After a couple of practice swings were greeted with cries of "oles", he sent his ball down the first fairway, puffing out his cheeks with relief and thumping his heart.

Djokovic and England's Popert were up against Spain's F1 driver Carlos Sainz who recently won the Singapore Grand Prix and Italian G4D golfer Tommaso Perrino.

They won 3-1 with Djokovic's 'shot of the day' coming on the par-four 16th where he managed to drive the green from a slightly advanced tee -- earning loud cheers from the galleries. "This is sporting greatness," Djokovic jested as his ball stopped on the green. "I was going to play safe but the crowd made me do it. It was one of the best shots I've ever hit."

There were some duff shots too, including one failed attempt to hack out of the rough, but the Serb, who had some tips from former Real Madrid forward Bale and keen golfer before the contest, clearly enjoyed the change of scenery.

Although he admitted playing golf in front of large crowds was more daunting than battling on a packed Centre Court. "I've never played golf in front of this many people, so considering my level I think I've played quite well."

World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic is a six-time winner of the Rome Masters but on Wednesday he swapped his racket for a set of golf clubs to appear in the All Star Match in the build-up to the 44th Ryder Cup.

It's a unique experience." With hundreds of fans in the stands and many more lining the fairway, Djokovic initially walked out to address his ball with a tennis racket, before switching to a driver. Also read: Ind vs Aus: Rahul Dravid 'really happy' with Team India's CWC'23 preparations despite 3rd ODI loss They won 3-1 with Djokovic's 'shot of the day' coming on the par-four 16th where he managed to drive the green from a slightly advanced tee -- earning loud cheers from the galleries. "This is sporting greatness," Djokovic jested as his ball stopped on the green. "I was going to play safe but the crowd made me do it. It was one of the best shots I've ever hit." There were some duff shots too, including one failed attempt to hack out of the rough, but the Serb, who had some tips from former Real Madrid forward Bale and keen golfer before the contest, clearly enjoyed the change of scenery. Although he admitted playing golf in front of large crowds was more daunting than battling on a packed Centre Court. "I've never played golf in front of this many people, so considering my level I think I've played quite well." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Golf: Tennis world number one Novak Djokovic swaps racket for 'driver' for Ryder Cup round

The cricketing fraternity is eagerly waiting for the commencement of the ICC ODI World Cup, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad. The mega event will be held entirely in India. Many former cricketers and experts of the game have shared their predictions for the showpiece tournament. Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn, who ended his career with 439, 196 and 69 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively, has also predicted the finalists of the CWC 2023 edition.

Speaking on Star Sports ahead of the 2023 edition, Steyn said, "It’s a tough one, you know my heart wants to go with South Africa making the final. I would love them to make the final, their team, a lot of their players play in the IPL, they play in India regularly. They got some guys like in David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen who really started to figure out those conditions and bat well there. Then, there is KG Rabada who has been bowling there for ages and a lot of their other senior players have played a lot of cricket there. So I feel like they have got the ability to go on and get to the finals with getting those players."

In the same discussion, ex-India fast-bowling all-rounder Irfan Pathan has also backed Temba Bavuma & Co. Not India vs Pakistan, South Africa vs Australia, England vs New Zealand! Steyn predicts CWC '23 finalists

Australia’s star man Mitchell Marsh has highlighted Glenn Maxwell’s importance to the side as the visitors salvaged a consolation win on Wednesday, 27 September in the final ODI. The win saw Maxwell play a key role as he scalped four wickets to prove his all-rounder ability. Already a prolific batter, his performance saw Australia clinch the final ODI in the three-match series by 66 runs but losing the series 1-2.

Marsh addresses Maxwell’s importance

"It was a great spell. He came back after having not played much cricket for the last (few) months. It was great to see him back. It is the energy that Maxi brings to the team, his presence, and the balance that he gives us," Marsh said during the post-match press conference.

"We obviously know that his batting is absolutely class but what he can do with the ball, and the options that he will give us with our all-rounders is vital for us going into the World Cup,” Maxwell said.

Like Maxwell, 31-year-old Marsh also played a key role in Australia’s dominant win as he scored 96 runs in 84 balls. However, he was unlucky to miss out on a hundred having enjoyed a prolific last few months. He, along with David Warner (56), put up an opening stand of 78 runs. Marsh would later partner Steven Smith (74) for a stand of 137 runs for the second wicket.

ODI World Cup 2023: Mitchell Marsh underlines THIS star's importance for Australia, says 'he is vital for us'

After an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three ODIs versus Australia, India entered the third and final match in Rajkot with an aim to inflict a clean sweep on Wednesday (September 27). However, Rohit Sharma-led India conceded the game by 66 runs in what was both the sides' last international outing before the CWC 2023 edition, which starts on October 05.

Being asked to bowl, India conceded 352 for 5 as Australia rode on Mitchell Marsh's 96, Steve Smith's 74, Marnus Labuschagne's 72 and David Warner's 56. In reply, India started off on a positive note with fifties from Rohit (81) and Virat Kohli (56) before losing their way to get all-out for 286 in 49.4 overs. After the game, India's head coach Rahul Dravid summed up India's CWC '23 preparations and feels 'really happy' with how things have been for the home side heading into the marquee event.

"Jasprit got a couple of games, and bowled his quota of 10 overs. Siraj suffered from a bug but got back and was able to bowl today. It was good to see how Ashwin bowled in the first two games. KL and his keeping through fifty overs, returning after 6 months, has been great. Shreyas has got some good knocks in the last couple of games. Really happy with how things are going and hopefully we can keep the momentum going into the World Cup."

Ind vs Aus: Rahul Dravid 'really happy' with Team India's CWC'23 preparations despite 3rd ODI loss

A lot has been happening in Bangladesh cricket of late. The Bangladesh cricket team announced their final 15-man squad for the upcoming CWC 2023 edition in India, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad, which saw the exclusion of star opener Tamim Iqbal. Tamim has had a topsy-turvy ride in the recent past -- announcing international retirement, then taking a quick U-turn and stepping down as the ODI captain.

With Shakib Al Hasan replacing Tamim as the Bangladesh ODI skipper ahead of the forthcoming World Cup, Tamim held on to his spot during the home ODIs versus New Zealand. After the second ODI, he complained of back issues -- which had forced him to miss the Asia Cup 2023 edition -- and eventually got ruled out. Thus, Tamim lost his spot in the World Cup squad due to injury concerns. However, the opener made a shocking claim of being a victim of dirty politics.

On Wednesday (September 27), Tamim took to Facebook and confirmed that he would have been fit enough to take part in the ODI World Cup. However, he won't be travelling to India solely because he is aware of the roadblocks being created for him by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). One of which, he said, was a top board official suggesting him to give up his opening slot and bat lower in the order.

'Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener'

Now, Shakib has hit back at Tamim's claims and lashed out at the former captain. "I am sure someone who is authorized had said this (to Tamim). I am sure whoever has said it, he thought of the team. A lot of things go into building a combination for a match. So if someone has said this to him, was it wrong? Or we can't make such a proposal? I am just going to tell someone that you can do whatever you want. Is the team first or the individual?" Shakib told the Dhaka-based TV channel T-Sports in an interview aired on Wednesday evening.

"Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener, scored 10,000-plus runs. If he sometimes bats at No 3 or 4, would it be a big problem? It is totally childish. It is my bat, I will play. No one else can play. A player should bat at any position for the team. Team first. It doesn't make any difference if you have made 100 or 200, and the team loses. What can you do with personal achievement? You want to make a name for yourself?" Shakib pointed out.

Also read: ‘He asked me to skip first match’ – Tamim Iqbal’s shocking revelation behind World Cup exclusion

"You are not thinking about the team at all. People don't understand these things. Why was the proposal given to him? It was for the team. What is wrong in that? You are a team man when you agree to such a proposal. Unless you are thinking along those lines, you are not a team man. You are playing for individual records, success, fame, and name. Not for the team," the all-rounder opined.

Shakib went on to add that he did not wish to carry a half-fit player in a marquee event like the ODI World Cup. He claimed that anyone playing without being 100% fit is cheating the team.

'MS Dhoni once said that the unfit player is cheating his team and country'

Shakib mentioned, "I didn't discuss the subject with the particular player, medical team or selector. It is definitely the board's decision. People might doubt my capability or capacity but someone like MS Dhoni, who has won everything and has the knowledge and sense, once said that the unfit player who is playing is cheating his team and country. I think we should accept it, and not just Tamim but every player (that you have to be fully fit when playing for the team or country)."

Shakib added, "Kane Williamson won't play the first two matches (in CWC '23), but then he will start playing. If I knew something like this, I wouldn't have any problems. But if I know that there's uncertainty about him playing the seventh or the third or the first game, or that I will only know in the morning of the game, it will be difficult for me to select the team. I don't think we need such a player."

"I certainly heard that he will play selectively. A journalist can't really tell you that he will come to the office an hour before he wants to come to office. If you ask me personally, if I was the company CEO, I won't keep that employee. Although I never had any discussion about this matter."

36-year-old Shakib also criticised Tamim for not leaving captaincy early and stated, "I have often heard in the dressing room that he is leaving the captaincy. Even a player once told him that 'bhai, leave it early so that the new captain gets a bit of time'. Exactly that's what happened. The one who came in, didn't get the time. Each and everyone knew including the selectors and board officials. Papon bhai (BCB president Nazmul Hassan) certainly knew about it."

"I don't know why he didn't leave it (earlier). He can tell you. It is like, your commander takes you to war but (Shakib mimicking a solider) after he has got you ready, the commander isn't telling you to fire or retreat. Where will you go? We were in this situation in the last two matches against Afghanistan (in July). The captain wouldn't have changed ahead of the Asia Cup and the World Cup, unless he himself announced that he was resigning or retiring. It would have happened 18 months ago, when everyone knew what was about to happen," Shakib added.

It will be interesting to see if Tamim responds to Shakib's claims. For Bangladesh, they play Sri Lanka and England in their two CWC '23 warm-up ties, on September 29 and October 02, before opening their campaign in the tournament versus Afghanistan on October 07 in Dharamshala.

I think we should accept it, and not just Tamim but every player (that you have to be fully fit when playing for the team or country)." Shakib added, "Kane Williamson won't play the first two matches (in CWC '23), but then he will start playing. If I knew something like this, I wouldn't have any problems. But if I know that there's uncertainty about him playing the seventh or the third or the first game, or that I will only know in the morning of the game, it will be difficult for me to select the team. I don't think we need such a player." "I certainly heard that he will play selectively. A journalist can't really tell you that he will come to the office an hour before he wants to come to office. If you ask me personally, if I was the company CEO, I won't keep that employee. Although I never had any discussion about this matter." 36-year-old Shakib also criticised Tamim for not leaving captaincy early and stated, "I have often heard in the dressing room that he is leaving the captaincy. Even a player once told him that 'bhai, leave it early so that the new captain gets a bit of time'. Exactly that's what happened. The one who came in, didn't get the time. Each and everyone knew including the selectors and board officials. Papon bhai (BCB president Nazmul Hassan) certainly knew about it." "I don't know why he didn't leave it (earlier). 'Someone like Rohit...': Shakib hits back at Tamim over CWC fiasco, questions his 'childish' approach

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa heaped praise on Shreyas Iyer and feels the middle-order batter has it in him to lead India in the future. Iyer returned to international cricket after a long time, due to back issues, during the Asia Cup 2023 edition. However, he batted only once and missed the Super Four stage and the final, won by Rohit Sharma-led India by ten wickets, as his back issues resurfaced, putting his ODI World Cup spot in danger. Thus, the ongoing three ODIs between India and Australia, at home, became more important for Iyer to prove his form and fitness.

After being dismissed for 3 in the series opener, won by India by five wickets in Mohali, Iyer came into his own in the second and penultimate ODI, in Indore, and slammed a brilliant 105. After Iyer's third ODI century, Uthappa lavished huge praise on the talented Indian batter and backed him as a potential captain for the future. On his YouTube channel, he said, "Shreyas Iyer, what a relief! It's been a long time coming. We've always known that he is a high-class player. In my books, he is someone who can go on to lead India as well in the future. Shreyas is a solid player and he showed us why in that hundred against Australia."

Uthappa further stated, "Just the pace at which he batted, the control, and the connection. To have a couple of low scores and then have a freak kind of spasm that keeps him out of action for some time. To come back like that, especially after the injury, is not easy and takes a lot of character."

On the other hand, Uthappa -- who was part of India's terrible run in 2007 ODI World Cup and emphatic win in the inaugural T20 World Cup later that year -- also lauded in-form Indian opener Shubman Gill. Gill scored an impressive 104 in the Indore ODI. He has already slammed five hundreds in the format so far this year and will enter the forthcoming ODI World Cup, at home, as the No. 1 ranked Indian batter (second overall after Babar Azam). Uthappa feels he is the next big thing in Indian cricket and certain to take over from Virat Kohli as the upcoming batting star of the country.

"If you have to look at a few things leading into the World Cup, one would be Shubman Gill's form. He is in such wonderful form that you want to protect that a little bit. You want to make sure that you save all those runs for an important tournament like the World Cup. All signs lead to Shubman Gill being the next big thing in Indian cricket. It certainly seems like he is going to take over from Virat Kohli as the next big Indian batting star. Here's hoping that he continues his good form, goes into the World Cup feeling exceptionally good, and scores lots and lots of runs for India. Hopefully, he sets high standards for himself and could very well be the Man of the Series."

Gill has been rested for the third and final ODI between India and Australia, being held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). Iyer, however, will hope to replicate his recent performance in the final encounter to help India whitewash the three ODIs. India won the first two games by five wickets and 99 runs (DLS method), respectively.

Jasprit Bumrah ended with his second-most expensive bowling figures during the India-Australia third and final ODI on Wednesday (September 27) in Rajkot. Bumrah accounted for three scalps but conceded 81 runs in his full quota of 10 overs to register his second-most expensive spell.

Bumrah's most expensive returns came during the three-match series between India and England in early 2017. In the second and penultimate ODI, India rode on Yuvraj Singh's 150 and MS Dhoni's 134 to post a mammoth 381 for 6. In reply, England managed 366 for 8 thanks to captain Eoin Morgan's 102 and attacking fifties from Jason Roy (82) and Joe Root (54). Back then, Bumrah -- who was new to international cricket after his debut in early 2016 -- was hammered left, right and centre as he conceded 81 runs in nine overs. He, however, accounted for the wicket of Alex Hales and Chris Woakes.

Talking about his spell in the Rajkot ODI versus Australia, Bumrah removed Labuschagne (74), Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell but was taken to the cleaners during his first four overs. After four overs, he conceded 45 runs but came back strongly to give away just 36 in his last six.

During the Asia Cup 2023 edition, former New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull made a big claim about Team India. Doull reckoned that India's cricket is too statistics-driven and, hence, it becomes a reason for their downfall in big ICC matches. In addition, he pointed out that the reason for India's failures is that they don't resort to a fearless brand of cricket, which would mean compromising on stats.

"Fearless cricket is there issue," Simon Doull told Sky Sports. "They don’t play fearless cricket enough. They play statistics-driven cricket and they are too worried about their stats too often. And to me, that is the one area I am concerned about their batting side," he added.

Now, former Indian pacer S Sreesanth has responded to Doull's statement and made a big claim. "New Zealand are coming to India. They will get to know if India play attacking cricket or not. We will thrash them. They got lucky in 2019 with MS Dhoni getting run out due to a direct hit. What did you do after playing the final? They made a team like England win the World Cup, who hadn't won a 50-over World Cup until then. New Zealand are never going to win. Yes, they might win in the future, but it will be embarrassing for them this time. If you get a chance address the media, please think before you speak. If you are ready to give, you should be able to take it also." Sreesanth told Sportskeeda.

'If Kohli or any...': Sreesanth slams Doull for stat jibe, says India will 'have a blast' vs NZ in CWC '23

England's 2019 World Cup campaign star Ben Stokes thinks that 'it's not arrogant' to say England are a good team and have a good chance to defend their title. The ODI World Cup starts next month on October 5 in India with England starting their title defence on the opening day against New Zealand.

“I don’t think it’s arrogance to say we’re a very good team,” Stokes told The Guardian in a conversation.

The Englishman, who has come out of retirement for the marquee tournament, also said that England are one of the title contenders and they have an edge over other teams in terms of experience of huge games.

“We’re in the mix. And what we now have in our favour, I think, is experience of huge games – an edge against sides who don’t play as many. I know franchise T20 cricket means a lot more players have been exposed to those situations; it’s great for that.

"But it doesn’t come close to wearing your country’s shirt, billions watching, knowing if you lose, you’re out.

Talking about the 2019 World Cup final where England beat New Zealand on the boundary count after a tied game as well as the super over, Stokes agreed that it was ridiculous.

“Weirdly, I always think back to the six Jimmy Neesham hit during the super over. I was just smiling out there, thinking ‘100 overs, dead level, down to the wire, all the mad things that have happened, what more can this game throw at us?’ It was ridiculous.

“That last ball of the match, the run out, everyone charging on to the field … yeah, it was pretty cool. People think I collapsed with emotion but in fact I just slipped. I thought I managed to style it out quite well.”

Talking about the hosts India, Stokes said that it is the hardest place to win but remained confident of his team's chances.

“It’s the hardest place to win. I’m confident I have the players and will try to make India think differently to how they usually play. But they are a seriously good team,” he said.
