The seizure came after Sweden and Latvia said Sunday that a fibre-optic cable linking the Swedish island of Gotland to Ventspils in Latvia had been damaged -- the latest of several similar incidents in the Baltic in recent months.
"No findings have been made linking the ship to the act," police attorney Ronny Jorgensen said in a statement.
"The investigation will continue, but we see no reason for the ship to remain in Tromso any longer," he added.
Nations around the Baltic Sea have scrambled to bolster their defences over the suspected sabotage of undersea cables in recent months.
<h2>'Nothing wrong'</h2>
The ship's owner rejected any wrongdoing as Norwegian police searched the ship and questioned the all-Russian crew, following a seizure request from Latvia.
Jorgensen, the police prosecutor, had said a crew member was suspected of involvement in the cable damage, which he described as "aggravated vandalism".&nbsp;
The Silver Dania is owned by Norwegian shipping company Silver Sea, whose chief Tormod Fossmark told AFP that "We sailed near Gotland... but we did not cast anchor.
"We did nothing wrong," he added. "Norwegian authorities have brought us into port to clear us of any involvement."
The Russian embassy in Oslo had told AFP by email that none of the sailors had been placed under arrest nor had they contacted the embassy for assistance.
<h2>Bulgarian ship under investigation</h2>
On Sunday, the Swedish coastguard seized a Bulgarian ship, the Malta-flagged "Vezhen", off Sweden's southeastern coast in connection with the same cable incident.
Swedish prosecutors have opened an investigation into "aggravated sabotage", and images of the vessel published by Swedish media appeared to show that one of its anchors had a broken arm.
Alexander Kalchev, CEO of Navibulgar, the Bulgarian maritime shipping company that operates the Vezhen, denied any involvement.
"I am convinced that we cannot say... that this was a malicious act," he said.
But prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist told Swedish news agency TT on Friday that he was confident the Vezhen was involved.
"I think I can say, on very solid grounds, that it is this ship that has damaged the cable," he said.
"Our work is continuing... The ship is still seized and there are various investigative measures being taken, including technical examinations," he said.
The incident is the latest in a series affecting cables in the Baltic Sea amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
Finland and Sweden, which both border the Baltic Sea, have dropped decades of military non-alignment to join NATO as concern about the region's security mounts.
Russia had warned both countries of repercussions if they joined the alliance.

Norway releases Russian-crewed ship after Baltic cable damage probe

Three people have been taken to Stokmarknes Hospital by rescue helicopter, while other passengers have been taken to a nearby school.&nbsp;
According to public broadcaster NRK, the bus came off the road and ended up partially in a body of water.&nbsp;
The Norwegian Red Cross took on social media and said that it was sending teams to help with a "serious bus accident" on the E10 road. Moroeover, fire, ambulance and police teams have also been working at the scene.
There have been reports of heavy snowdrifts and strong winds in the area.&nbsp;

Moreover, other passengers who were hurt have been taken to a nearby school after emergency services, including rescue helicopters and volunteers from the Red Cross, rushed to the scene.
Following the rescue operation, everyone has been taken out from the vehicle, the local media reported.&nbsp;
Mayor of the nearby V&aring;gan district, Vidar Thom Benjaminsen, said a "crisis team" had been set up, adding that a local team had been allocated for family members and as a reception centre.
'Very serious situation'
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St&oslash;re took to social media and said the crash was "a very serious situation" and that his thoughts were with everyone affected.
"This afternoon, we stand with those affected by the serious bus accident in Hadsel. My thoughts are with everyone involved and affected. It is a very serious situation where many people are involved, and there have been confirmed fatalities and serious injuries in the accident," he posted.&nbsp;

Norway's Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener has said that her country can help India get more green energy and "support the very ambitious goals that the Indian government has". Norway is a world leader in green energy, being Europe's largest producer of hydropower, expanding its onshore wind capacity, and giving a significant push to Green Hydrogen.&nbsp;

Speaking at WION Podcast, to our correspondent Sidhant Sibal, she said, "when it comes to the climate change goals and the Sustainable Development Goals, it is very clear for us in Norway, and should be also in a lot of other countries, that if India does not reach its goals, the world will not reach its goals".

The ambassador listed the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) as a milestone for Norway. European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organization which has Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and &nbsp;Switzerland as its members.

Sidhant Sibal: My first question to you is about the India-Norway relationship if you can give us a broader picture...

Ambassador May-Elin Stener: I would say the Indian-Norway relationship is really growing. It's getting more important by the day. And this year, 2024 has been a really important year. We managed to conclude the Free Trade Agreement, the trade and economic partnership agreement, in March, together with the other EFTA countries. And now we are just looking into the ratification in Norway, which will happen in the next couple of months and that is the cornerstone, a milestone for us, as a very good basis for our businesses.

Sidhant Sibal: You talked about EFTA, if you can talk about in detail, about the positive aspects in terms of how it will help not only the EFTA country but also India?&nbsp;

Ambassador May-Elin Stener: Well, it will help the EFTA countries, and I can talk about my own country, Norway, in the sense that a lot of goods will get easier access, and they will be cheaper. For example, Norwegian salmon, there is already quite a high toll on that, which will go down to zero in a few years. So Norwegian salmon will be cheaper, and that will also cause a great interest from the Norwegian seafood industry to look to India as a market. And mentioning market India is, and will be, the biggest consumer market in the world. So, of course, for us as Norway, this is of tremendous importance. And also, that's why I'm saying Norwegian interests, Norwegian businesses have a lot of interest. The agreement, though, also, I think, is beneficial for India, when, when it eases a trade between our countries and some of the goods that are going to Norway will also be cheaper to export. But first and foremost, I think this treaty is the first one to have an investment chapter, and that investment chapter is very important, and it's important for us in Norway and Norwegian businesses who want to invest in India. But I also think it's a very big advantage for India to have those measures on the investment.

Sidhant Sibal: What kind of investments we can expect from Norway, especially from your sovereign wealth fund to India and any domains which you expect.&nbsp;

Ambassador May-Elin Stener: The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund will not be included by the agreement, because we're talking about foreign direct investments here. So I can say about the sovereign wealth fund, though they are also growing in India, and their investments are growing, and probably that will also continue. But on the foreign direct investment, those areas that are of priority for Norway and India in our relationship, particularly on green energy, and also on the maritime sector and the maritime industries. We have very particular technologies in Norway, because we have been an energy superpower, because we found oil and gas in the 1970s and we're now transforming it all to green energy, and we're using a lot of the same technologies, and we are quite cutting edge there. And also we have been a big shipping nation, and therefore we also have quite a good technology to contribute in that area as well. And then coming into India, this is offering something that we can't really find anywhere else, it's the scale that is here. So therefore these companies, with these cutting-edge technologies, will be really interested in investing. And that we see also is of interest here in India, in your growth, in your growth stories.

Sidhant Sibal: Norwegian technology and India scale, they can come together, and Norway is a leader when it comes to technology, clean energy. How can Norway help India in meeting its goal, especially when it comes to climate change goals?&nbsp;

Ambassador May-Elin Stener: Well, when it comes to the climate change goals and the Sustainable Development Goals, it is very clear for us in Norway, and should be also in a lot of other countries, that if India does not reach its goals, the world will not reach its goals. And this is important to stop the climate change that we are seeing and to keep our planet. So, you know that scheme, this is something that we should all worry about, and I think it's really important that we succeed and that we actually also will be able to work on these issues together and to get more green energy into India and to support the very ambitious goals that the Indian government has.&nbsp; 
 
Sidhant Sibal: We have a platform called the India Nordic Summit. It happened in Stockholm. Then it happened in Copenhagen. Is expected to happen in your country. How do you see this platform in furthering the goals between India and the Nordic region as a whole, which you're part of?

Ambassador May-Elin Stener: Well, the Nordic Region, we are composed of countries. We have a lot of the same history. We work very closely together in the Nordic Council, some of us share more or less the same language, and it's a platform where we are cooperating a lot in many areas. Still combined, we are population-wise, quite small compared to India, but the economies of the Nordic countries combined, we are between 10 to 12 in the world. So we do have a lot to offer. And I think also India sees that, because we are also getting the interest back. And as you have been saying, there have been two Nordic India summits, and we are now looking into having the next one in Oslo quite soon.

Sidhant Sibal: Now many of our viewers will be watching this interview. If you can explain the Norwegian foreign policy to them. What is the Norwegian policy all about, if you can, perhaps, in a concise format, tell this to our viewers.

Ambassador May-Elin Stener:&nbsp;Well, the Nordic well, we are a country far up in the north. We are a small country. We are neighbouring Russia in the north, this is, of course, important points in our foreign policy, in the current climate that we see, we are staunch supporters of Ukraine, and we are condemning the full-scale invasion of Russia, because we see that this is wrong. A country cannot invade that it's not allowed according to international law. But also for us as a neighbouring country, we of course, feel this even more closely than we also had a very, very close relations in the Middle East, some of the viewers might remember, if they are old enough, the Oslo Accords from 1993 that was brokered by Norway between Israel and the Palestinians. And the most important in those Accords, maybe, were the two-state solutions. And it does not look very good for the two-state solution these days, but we are still working on trying to get the parties in the Middle East together so that we are able to see that we still think that there is no other way to two-state&nbsp;solution between. So those are two important pillars. When we look at the world how it is today, we already spoke about the climate change and working, working in the framework of the United Nations on the Paris Agreement, and discussing and seeing how we can get action to solve those problems and to look towards the cleaner future for everyone and below the 1.5% Celsius goal is, of course, also very important. So those are some issues important in our foreign policy. Apart from that, also, of course, we want to see ourselves, as a bridge leader. We've had, I mentioned the Middle East, but we've also had, had roles in peace, building and mediating roles between parties in conflicts in many places in the world, and that's an experience that we have used, and are also used in the world today, which is quite full of conflicts.

Sidhant Sibal: It's a very volatile world. But ma'am, my last question to you is about India's role. How does Norway seize India which is a large country in Asia, a democratic country, and a country which is rising very fast?

Ambassador May-Elin Stener: Well, it's exactly that we see India as a country that is rising very fast. The economy is now the fifth largest in the world, and it's also the fastest-growing economy. You soon looking to be the third largest, which makes you a big power in itself, but we also see that the way India is conducting its foreign policy, it's growing in importance, and it's a country that a lot of other countries, including mine, are looking to and want to have close relations with, for sure.

Sidhant Sibal: In addition to this, both the prime ministers met in Brazil at the G20 Summit. Anything specific that came out, we saw the Indian read-out talking about the various sectors. Anything from the Norwegian side. What do we expect, or what was the purpose of that very important meeting?

Ambassador May-Elin Stener: Well, it was indeed a very important meeting, and it was really good to see that the two prime ministers met, my prime minister with Prime Minister Modi, and as I understand, they had a very good meeting and discussed precisely those issues that have been mentioned here, because they are peers in our bilateral relationship, particularly how to trade and economic partnership agreement implemented and to work on that. They also reconfirmed the importance of the Nordic India summit that will happen in Oslo next time. So it definitely just showed how important this relationship clearly is.

‘If War Comes’: Sweden, Finland issue survival guides as threat of WW3 looms

A train carrying 55 passengers derailed Thursday in northern Norway following a landslide, killing one and injuring four people on board, authorities said.

The train was hit by falling rocks on its way from Trondheim to the northern town of Bodo, police officer Arild Woldmo told broadcaster NRK.

Bent Are Eilertsen, another police official, told news agency NTB that one person had been killed in the accident and four others required medical care.

"There were 55 people on board the train when it derailed," he told the agency, adding that all passengers had been evacuated from the train.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Northern Norway said in a post on X that three helicopters plus emergency services had been dispatched to the scene.

Images from the scene showed the locomotive and the first of five carriages having slid down an incline next to the track.

Geologists were expected to carry out a survey before the debris could be cleared and the train lifted.

Witnesses speaking to the media said big boulders could be seen on the tracks in front of the train.

Norway, a country with a rugged landscape, is frequently hit by landslides, particularly in spring when the snow melts.

Specially curated for people with disabilities, the show has a slower pace and is presented in simple Norwegian. The show has a weekly viewership of 4,000 and 5,000 people.

The station has 10 reporters who work as local news correspondents from various locations across the country.

“I have to follow the script and not talk about personal stuff – because here is about the news. When I work here, I have to be very professional,” said Emily Ann Riedel, who has Down's Syndrome and works at Stavanger, according to BBC.

While Riedel and her colleagues, who have mild learning impairments, can speak English well and travel independently, some things remain a challenge for them.

“Sometimes it can be difficult to say what’s in the cue cards, so we have to do it again and again,” says Camilla Kvalheim, the managing editor of the station. Kvalheim also provides on-the-job training for her team, as they did not study journalism at university before working at the station. She holds high expectations from her team.

Kvalheim, who used to work as a teacher for people with learning disabilities more than a decade ago, decided that she wanted to pursue her filmmaking passion. She noted that the dynamics of the people she was working with changed once they started working with the camera.

"Suddenly, when we were working together on those films, we were a crew, we were a team. It wasn’t me over them – we were equal,” Kvalheim recalls.

She was encouraged to keep up her work when she realised her creative peers had much to say about the world. Now the station is a national network with a proper studio.&nbsp;

Kvalheim admits that the reporters are paid less than those who work at other networks. While they receive funds from the state and revenue from the weekly show on TV2, they are on a tight budget.

“TV BRA is very important,” said Svein Andre Hofsø a reporter based in Oslo, who works with TV BRA. “Because we are talking about people with a disability, and what are our rights in real life.”

While there are other similar channels in Denmark and Iceland that focus on simplified programmes for people with learning disabilities, they are not presented by people who have learning disabilities.

“I think this TV station is really important for our community,” says Anne-Britt Ekerhovd, a fan of the station, who has a learning disability. “They explain things really well. In different news like NRK, they explain it too hard for us to understand. TV BRA is much easier to understand.”

Five of the people on board managed to escape on an inflatable life raft and were airlifted by a helicopter to safety. However, the woman lost her life and her body was later discovered on Wednesday morning near the spot where their boat sank.

The archaeologists were left stunned when they discovered dozens of graves of children, which belonged to the Bronze and Iron Ages,&nbsp;in southern Norway.

The circles of stones, each of which measured up to six&nbsp;feet (two&nbsp;metres) across, were kept together. These circles were placed around a huge, central zone.&nbsp;

The archaeologists, after carrying out further investigations, found pottery shards and burned bones beneath those stones.

<h2>Children buried were infants or 3 to 6 years old</h2>

In a new analysis, it was discovered that nearly all the burials were graves of children who were killed between 800 and 200 BC.&nbsp;

Among them, many were infants and others were between three&nbsp;to six&nbsp;years old.

"The dating shows that the burial site was used over a long period, so they couldn't all have died in the same natural disaster or outbreak of disease or epidemic," said Fossum.

The museum, in a statement, said that such a concentration of the ancient graves of children is very unique in Europe.

The statement added that the area around the burial ground is filled with rock carvings which represent Sun worship and voyages.

Archaeologists have decided to analyse the artefacts recovered from the site, which include a metal brooch and pieces of pottery.

"Analyses of the pottery fragments can tell us a lot. It doesn't appear that all the vessels were containers for burnt bones; some were placed between the graves, and we are very curious about what was inside them," Fossum said.

He added that the burial ground was discovered by the archaeologists after they investigated a Stone Age settlement nearby.

However, Fossum said that the burial site at Fredrikstad was rather unusual.&nbsp;

"The graves are very close together. They must have been in an open landscape, with thoroughfares nearby, so everyone would have known about them. Cooking pits and fireplaces around the site suggest that gatherings and ceremonies were held in connection with burials," he said.

In a significant diplomatic move, Norway formally recognised the state of Palestine earlier this week. Norway's Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, described the recognition as&nbsp;"right thing to do...(at) right time", emphasising the importance of breaking the cycle of violence in the region. The decision aligns Norway with Ireland and Spain who also recognised Palestine earlier this week.

In an interview with WION's&nbsp;diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal exclusively from Oslo, Eide elaborated on the motivations behind this decision.&nbsp;"We need to get out of this horrible cycle of violence where you had terrorist attacks on Israel, and then very massive response, overstepping the boundaries of international law, in Gaza,"&nbsp;he said.&nbsp;

Palestine is already recognised as an independent state by over 140 of the 193 United Nations member countries. When asked about the potential for more European nations to follow suit, Eide expressed optimism.&nbsp;"We are expecting more countries soon. We actually know of countries that will do it within the next two weeks,"&nbsp;he revealed.

Sidhant Sibal: Why recognise the state of Palestine in the current situation? What is the reason behind recognising it now?

Espen Barth Eide: Thank you very much. So very good to be on your program. I want to say that we do this because we think&nbsp;it's the right thing to do.&nbsp;But also&nbsp;because we think&nbsp;it's the right time to do it.&nbsp;It might sound paradoxical that we are announcing this recognition now in the middle of a war. But actually we do this because we want to add our voice to all those who are saying that&nbsp;we need to get out of this horrible cycle of violence where you had terrorist attacks on Israel, and then very massive response, overstepping the boundaries of international law in Gaza&nbsp;and increasing settler violence and increasing settlements in the West Bank. All of this together is a cycle of violence, and&nbsp;we want to reach out to all those forces who believe in a two-state solution.&nbsp;And we do not do this in a vacuum because the three countries mentioned and many other European countries are now working closely with an Arab group of foreign ministers, who have taken the initiative to update the old idea of a regional peace in the Middle East where you combine Palestinian state and the recognition and establishment of a Palestinian state, strengthening of the Palestinian Authority, together with a normalisation between Saudi Arabia and other Arab states and Israel. So, what we are trying to do is to give some impetus to that process, and this very weekend we have (had)&nbsp;meetings in Brussels, between Arab and European ministers, together with the EU and the Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation. And I thought they were very constructive meetings, thinking of such regional planning.

Sidhant Sibal: So will the recognition, make a difference on the ground? The war seems to be endless, and the move looks like a mere symbolic move...

Espen Barth Eide: First, this will not lead to the end of war. For the end of the war, we need a ceasefire and after a ceasefire, we need to work on the humanitarian situation of the&nbsp;people in Gaza who are not only hurt by bombs, but also starving&nbsp;and you have diseases and a very problematic situation and all infrastructure destroyed. So, the recognition is not about that. Recognition is about what comes later.&nbsp;Recognition is to send the signal into the political process towards what will be the long-term outcome of all of this.&nbsp;And we are convinced that it has to be a Palestinian state. That it has to be a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel, run by the people who are now running the Palestine Authority;&nbsp;President Abbas and Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa who has formed the new government quite recently. So, if it was only recognition, you would be right, this would be a symbolic move but because recognition is anchored in the regional process, which is rapidly evolving, we think is very meaningful. And we long ago decided that we&nbsp;don't need to wait for the end of the peace process to recognise. We could also do it at the&nbsp;moment where we could inspire the peace process&nbsp;and we found together with Ireland and Spain that this is the right moment. And we know that&nbsp;other European countries will be following in the coming weeks.

Sidhant Sibal: So Norway has historically played an important role in terms of the peace process in West Asia. The Oslo Peace Accords are well known, what kind of role Norway sees itself in the future when it comes to ongoing efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict. We have seen almost on a daily basis reports of deaths emerging from Gaza.

Espen Barth Eide: First, I have to say&nbsp;we see terrible images every day&nbsp;and the latest images from the burnt, destroyed, children and women in the tent camps&nbsp;outside Rafah who were there because Israel had told them to go exactly there because they were going to go into Rafah. This is horrible and it affects us all,&nbsp;we need to stop this war. The actual mediation towards the ceasefire is led by Qatar and Egypt, and besides Israel and Hamas. We are only in a supportive role to that work. We facilitate our messages here and there and we have contact with all goods. But this is not Norway's key role right now. What we particularly emphasise because of our historic role, as you correctly mentioned, is that&nbsp;we need to get the political process back on track&nbsp;and we need to do that in a manner that is updated to the realities of 2024. The Oslo process was in 1993, it was just after the end of the Cold War, it was a very different international circumstance. So, this in a sense it is 2.0.&nbsp;It is a software update of Oslo's approach to this. We still want a two-state solution. We always wanted that. But we want to do that now, much more anchored in the region. So the leadership here are some of the neighbouring countries and we are leading what you can call the European support group for that Arab initiative.

Sidhant Sibal: So the US, UK, EU see Palestine as part of a negotiated process. Do you see this as something that can be taken forward or do you see it as a dead-end that Palestine, a viable state of Palestine, cannot be an outcome of a negotiated process given the situation on ground?

Espen Barth Eide: The problem is that the Netanyahu government in Israel has stated very clearly that they are not interested in negotiating a two-state solution, at least not at this stage, and that has been clear for a long time. This is not only after the seventh of October and the Hamas attacks on Israel, but that has also been their position for many years. So, with that government, it seems that we will have to wait rather long, if we want the two sides to come and sit down and negotiate. So that's why this group that I'm mentioning , this Arab-European group with some other countries are now trying to see how we can start to put the different pieces of the puzzle together. Of course, at some point Israel has to be part of it, goes without saying but we are not waiting for them to be ready before we start planning for this and out of this, we hope that there will be a&nbsp;conference on the implementation of a two-state solution&nbsp;and an Israel will be welcome anytime. But right now, they are focused on fighting Hamas in Gaza. I think what&nbsp;we are doing is in the interest of the Palestinian people obviously but also the people of Israel. Because I honestly think that it will be easier to live safely and securely in Israel, if they contribute to the establishment of a Palestinian side that they can work with on the other side. This was the vision of Oslo and we still want that but we need to do that taking into account the realities we are living in right now.

Sidhant Sibal: Coming to Asia, how do you see India's role in the situation when it comes to the Israel and Palestine situation and India's position amid the conflict?

Espen Barth Eide: So of course&nbsp;India recognised Palestine already in 1988. That's one of the first countries, so what we just did last week is something India did many years ago. So India has relations both to the state of Palestine but also to Israel, quite good relations, I believe to both sides.&nbsp;India's foreign policy is important and I very much welcome Indian support and contributions&nbsp;to this work of allowing a regionally embedded peace process to develop further. I think having more Asian engagement and that also the Arab part of Asia would be warmly welcomed.

Sidhant Sibal: In your first answer, you pointed to conversation with European countries as well. Are you looking at more European countries joining your country in recognising Palestine and if yes, can you name some of them?

Espen Barth Eide: &nbsp;So the first answer is yes,&nbsp;we are expecting more countries soon. We actually know of countries that will do it within the next two weeks.&nbsp;But I don't want to name them because it's up to them to make their own. I'm not their spokesperson, but I know. So at least some of them and I think there is a movement now among European countries and of course some European countries already did. Sweden and Iceland, just to name a few previously, and now we are looking at a number of European countries to come to the same conclusion that it's time to recognise, but not only to recognise, but also to support this idea of this regional peace initiative.

Sidhant Sibal: And are you looking at sanctioning Israel as well? We have seen or there have been reports coming from Europe as to how the European leaders are looking at this possibility as well.

Espen Barth Eide:&nbsp;So, Norway already has an absolute ban on the sale of weapons and also on military grade, non-weapon equipment. So, this is already in place for a long time, we also have a strong recommendation against the trade with the occupied territories. And we have sanctions on some individuals in the West Bank to be involved in violence. But when it comes to broader economic sanctions, that will be a discussion of the European Union. And a few days ago,&nbsp;many members of the European Union said that maybe it's time to look into broader sanctions as well. And in that case, we will follow the developments of the European Union because&nbsp;Norway never has its own sanctions. We always do that in unison with other like-minded countries.

Sidhant Sibal: We have seen a strong Israeli reaction as well. They have recalled their ambassador from Oslo . How do you see Israeli reaction over you recognising the state of Palestine?

Espen Barth Eide: Well, we knew that they would not like it, so that was expected. Recalling your ambassador for consultation says one of the tools in the diplomatic toolbox. We have said very clearly that we have no plan so reciprocating. We want to maintain normal good relations with Israel. And I think that we will let the dust settle, I think they did the steps in the sense, to dissuade other countries from doing the same.&nbsp;Norway is a friend of Israel, just as much as we are a friend of the Palestinian people, and we want to remain that but&nbsp;we also want to be honest with our friends, when we are critical of their behavior and within Israel has made many mistakes in the way that they responded to the terrorist attacks on the seventh of October.&nbsp;Fighting terror is something every country is entitled to do. But there are rules for warfare and many of those rules have been violated.

Sidhant Sibal: On an optimistic note, are you hopeful that a viable state of Palestine can exist side by side with Israel, with the Israeli side getting good security guarantees?

Espen Barth Eide: &nbsp;Yes, I am convinced that that is not only possible, but actually the only credible option.

And we do not do this in a vacuum because the three countries mentioned and many other European countries are now working closely with an Arab group of foreign ministers, who have taken the initiative to update the old idea of a regional peace in the Middle East where you combine Palestinian state and the recognition and establishment of a Palestinian state, strengthening of the Palestinian Authority, together with a normalisation between Saudi Arabia and other Arab states and Israel. So, what we are trying to do is to give some impetus to that process, and this very weekend we have (had) meetings in Brussels, between Arab and European ministers, together with the EU and the Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation. And I thought they were very constructive meetings, thinking of such regional planning. Sidhant Sibal: So will the recognition, make a difference on the ground? The war seems to be endless, and the move looks like a mere symbolic move... Espen Barth Eide: First, this will not lead to the end of war. For the end of the war, we need a ceasefire and after a ceasefire, we need to work on the humanitarian situation of the people in Gaza who are not only hurt by bombs, but also starving and you have diseases and a very problematic situation and all infrastructure destroyed. So, the recognition is not about that. Recognition is about what comes later. Recognition is to send the signal into the political process towards what will be the long-term outcome of all of this. And we are convinced that it has to be a Palestinian state. That it has to be a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel, run by the people who are now running the Palestine Authority; President Abbas and Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa who has formed the new government quite recently. So, if it was only recognition, you would be right, this would be a symbolic move but because recognition is anchored in the regional process, which is rapidly evolving, we think is very meaningful. And we long ago decided that we don't need to wait for the end of the peace process to recognise. We could also do it at the moment where we could inspire the peace process and we found together with Ireland and Spain that this is the right moment. And we know that other European countries will be following in the coming weeks. Sidhant Sibal: So Norway has historically played an important role in terms of the peace process in West Asia. The Oslo Peace Accords are well known, what kind of role Norway sees itself in the future when it comes to ongoing efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict. We have seen almost on a daily basis reports of deaths emerging from Gaza. Espen Barth Eide: First, I have to say we see terrible images every day and the latest images from the burnt, destroyed, children and women in the tent camps outside Rafah who were there because Israel had told them to go exactly there because they were going to go into Rafah. This is horrible and it affects us all, we need to stop this war. The actual mediation towards the ceasefire is led by Qatar and Egypt, and besides Israel and Hamas. We are only in a supportive role to that work. We facilitate our messages here and there and we have contact with all goods. But this is not Norway's key role right now. What we particularly emphasise because of our historic role, as you correctly mentioned, is that we need to get the political process back on track and we need to do that in a manner that is updated to the realities of 2024. The Oslo process was in 1993, it was just after the end of the Cold War, it was a very different international circumstance. So, this in a sense it is 2.0. It is a software update of Oslo's approach to this. We still want a two-state solution. We always wanted that. But we want to do that now, much more anchored in the region. So the leadership here are some of the neighbouring countries and we are leading what you can call the European support group for that Arab initiative. Also watch | Palestine recognition: Norway FM Espen Barth Eide speaks to WION × Sidhant Sibal: So the US, UK, EU see Palestine as part of a negotiated process. Do you see this as something that can be taken forward or do you see it as a dead-end that Palestine, a viable state of Palestine, cannot be an outcome of a negotiated process given the situation on ground? Espen Barth Eide: The problem is that the Netanyahu government in Israel has stated very clearly that they are not interested in negotiating a two-state solution, at least not at this stage, and that has been clear for a long time. This is not only after the seventh of October and the Hamas attacks on Israel, but that has also been their position for many years. So, with that government, it seems that we will have to wait rather long, if we want the two sides to come and sit down and negotiate. So that's why this group that I'm mentioning , this Arab-European group with some other countries are now trying to see how we can start to put the different pieces of the puzzle together. Of course, at some point Israel has to be part of it, goes without saying but we are not waiting for them to be ready before we start planning for this and out of this, we hope that there will be a conference on the implementation of a two-state solution and an Israel will be welcome anytime. But right now, they are focused on fighting Hamas in Gaza. I think what we are doing is in the interest of the Palestinian people obviously but also the people of Israel. Because I honestly think that it will be easier to live safely and securely in Israel, if they contribute to the establishment of a Palestinian side that they can work with on the other side. This was the vision of Oslo and we still want that but we need to do that taking into account the realities we are living in right now. Sidhant Sibal: Coming to Asia, how do you see India's role in the situation when it comes to the Israel and Palestine situation and India's position amid the conflict? Espen Barth Eide: So of course India recognised Palestine already in 1988. That's one of the first countries, so what we just did last week is something India did many years ago. So India has relations both to the state of Palestine but also to Israel, quite good relations, I believe to both sides. India's foreign policy is important and I very much welcome Indian support and contributions to this work of allowing a regionally embedded peace process to develop further. I think having more Asian engagement and that also the Arab part of Asia would be warmly welcomed. Sidhant Sibal: In your first answer, you pointed to conversation with European countries as well. Are you looking at more European countries joining your country in recognising Palestine and if yes, can you name some of them? Espen Barth Eide: So the first answer is yes, we are expecting more countries soon. We actually know of countries that will do it within the next two weeks. But I don't want to name them because it's up to them to make their own. I'm not their spokesperson, but I know. So at least some of them and I think there is a movement now among European countries and of course some European countries already did. Sweden and Iceland, just to name a few previously, and now we are looking at a number of European countries to come to the same conclusion that it's time to recognise, but not only to recognise, but also to support this idea of this regional peace initiative. Sidhant Sibal: And are you looking at sanctioning Israel as well? We have seen or there have been reports coming from Europe as to how the European leaders are looking at this possibility as well. Espen Barth Eide: So, Norway already has an absolute ban on the sale of weapons and also on military grade, non-weapon equipment. So, this is already in place for a long time, we also have a strong recommendation against the trade with the occupied territories. And we have sanctions on some individuals in the West Bank to be involved in violence. But when it comes to broader economic sanctions, that will be a discussion of the European Union. And a few days ago, many members of the European Union said that maybe it's time to look into broader sanctions as well. And in that case, we will follow the developments of the European Union because Norway never has its own sanctions. We always do that in unison with other like-minded countries. Sidhant Sibal: We have seen a strong Israeli reaction as well. They have recalled their ambassador from Oslo . How do you see Israeli reaction over you recognising the state of Palestine? Espen Barth Eide: Well, we knew that they would not like it, so that was expected. Recalling your ambassador for consultation says one of the tools in the diplomatic toolbox. We have said very clearly that we have no plan so reciprocating. We want to maintain normal good relations with Israel. And I think that we will let the dust settle, I think they did the steps in the sense, to dissuade other countries from doing the same. Norway is a friend of Israel, just as much as we are a friend of the Palestinian people, and we want to remain that but we also want to be honest with our friends, when we are critical of their behavior and within Israel has made many mistakes in the way that they responded to the terrorist attacks on the seventh of October. Fighting terror is something every country is entitled to do. But there are rules for warfare and many of those rules have been violated. Sidhant Sibal: On an optimistic note, are you hopeful that a viable state of Palestine can exist side by side with Israel, with the Israeli side getting good security guarantees? Espen Barth Eide: Yes, I am convinced that that is not only possible, but actually the only credible option.
