The Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud lost its navigation ability and suffered a power outage after being hit by a rogue wave while it was sailing in the North Sea, said Danish authorities and the ship's owner on Thursday (Dec 21).

The 266 passengers and 131 crew members were safe, as per the Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

"There is no power on the ship. The main engine is functioning but the navigation systems and radars are not," a spokesperson for the centre, which is responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations, said.

While the ship was sailing approximately 200 kilometres (120 miles) off Denmark's west coast and roughly 330 kilometres off Britain's east coast, strong winds tore apart the windows on the bridge of the vessel, allowing water to enter which resulted in a power failure on the bridge, said the centre.

The ship belongs to the cruise company HX which is a unit of Norway's Hurtigruten Group, it left Floroe in Norway on Thursday (Dec 21) and was due to arrive in Tilbury in the UK on Friday (Dec 22).

"Earlier this afternoon, December 21, MS Maud reported a temporary loss of power after encountering a rogue wave," Hurtigruten said in an emailed statement.

"At this time, the ship has confirmed that no serious passenger or crew injuries have been sustained as a result of the incident and the condition of the ship remains stable," it said.

A towage vessel from the civil rescue company Esvagt was then sent which was scheduled to arrive at the ship around 2230 GMT.

The ship is now being steered manually from the engine room, it can however not navigate.

Esvagt support vessels had then arrived at the spot to help the ship navigate until it could be dragged to the port.

"I don't think there is any danger to the ship now. If the captain thought so, he would have asked to be evacuated which he hasn't," the rescue centre spokesperson said.

The area was on Thursday hit by a storm with hurricane-force gusts blowing from the northwest which the Danish Meteorological Institute said would continue on Friday as well.

We see India as a vital partner for us in terms of achieving our core foreign policy objectives, which is essentially to ensure that we are able to tackle and address the biggest global challenges of our time, namely climate change, the preservation of multilateralism, the preservation of international law, and we see India as a vital bridge builder to the global south and a country that we are adamant to partner with and that we are able to find good solutions with on a whole host of a topic.

So the meetings I've had confirmed the relationship, that the relationship is strong, and that we're both committed, both India and Norway are both committed to preserving and advancing that relationship.

Sidhant Sibal: Areas of cooperation look like clean technology and Arctic, if you can shed some light on how you plan to collaborate or cooperate with India on that?

Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: So both India and Norway have set very clear targets for how we want to transition into a greener economy and achieve our respective objectives under the Paris Agreement, so we want both, both our governments are determined to become carbon neutral. And that requires us to think long term and that requires us to think creatively in terms of how we organise our respective economies.

So we have had lots of good meetings now with various counterparts. I met with five ministers, I've met with various representatives of the Indian business sector, the Indian scientific community, Indian representatives of civil society, and it just confirmed again to me that India is a global leader when it comes to transitioning into a greener economy. There is lots of creative thinking going on both in the Indian government in terms of what is required to be more to be greener and its approach to how it gets its energy supplied, but also in terms of attaining new technology and moving forward with new means of production and energy sources. 
 
So I have lots of things that I will take back to my counterparts back home, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Environment, and I think this the these two days in India so far have, again, just confirmed both our government's determination, but also our willingness and ability to move towards a greener economy and a greener future.

Sidhant Sibal: And on Arctic, how do you see the cooperation India's quite keen and interested in Arctic affairs?

Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: I think both India and Norway are countries that are committed to finding good solutions for the Arctic. And that entails also very strong, a very strong commitment to science and finding ways to move forward on the basis of understanding the ecosystem in the Arctic. And understanding how the Arctic can play a very critical role in moving us towards a greener future.

We've had, I think, close to 70 projects now between Norwegian and Indian scientists now taking place over the course of just the last couple of years, and that's just testimony to this mutual commitment to investigating and finding solutions in the Arctic which is conducive to a greener future.

Sidhant Sibal: Norway next year, it is expected to host the India Nordic Summit. How do you see this mechanism for engagement between India and the Nordics and any agenda specifically you look at to put when the leaders of the five Nordic countries and Indian Prime Minister will be meeting 
 
Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: I think it's premature now to talk about the concrete agenda items. But the Nordic heads of state and also hopefully the Prime Minister of India will be determined to speak about the most pressing geopolitical issues that will be vital to address at that time in history, but also to discuss energy solutions and discuss how to combat climate change and discuss the blue economy and discuss other areas for both our governments, rather all our governments are committed to finding sustainable solutions to overcome some of the global challenges that we're faced with.

Sidhant Sibal: Any plans for Norwegian investment wealth fund, what kind of investment it has been doing globally, and India 
 
Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: That's something that we're very determined to, to help foster in India. So that's something that will continue and, again, it's testimony to our strong collaboration and our mutual determination to achieve our respective climate goals.

Sidhant Sibal: So my last question to you is on global geopolitics. We have several conflicts which are happening. One is of course in Europe, the Ukraine conflict, another in the West Asia region, what's your country's stance on these conflicts? 
 
Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: So when it comes to the conflict in Europe, and Russia's aggression in Ukraine, we have been very clear from the start. We consider what Russia has done to be a violation of international law, &nbsp;to be a violation of the UN Charter.

And we've been very clear in stating unequivocally that Russia needs to withdraw from the territories that it has tried to annex and that Ukraine has, under international law, a right to maintain its sovereignty. When it comes to Israel and Palestine. We see that as a very dramatic escalation and we have been very concerned.

We have been unequivocal in our condemnation of the vicious terrorist attack conducted by Hamas on Israeli civilians. And we've also been equally clear that Israel has a right to respond and act in self defense. But we have been concerned about the number of civilians that have been killed now with the course of the last few weeks close to 6000 children having died on the Gaza Strip.

So the Prime Minister, the foreign minister, and myself have been saying in no one equivocal terms, that there needs to be a humanitarian pause and end the hostilities that are ongoing.

We're glad to see the recent developments now in terms of hostages being released, and that some humanitarian aid has been allowed in and we want to see that continue.

But our overall message is perhaps that there needs to be now a sustainable resolution to this conflict, there needs to be a two state solution, which provides Israel with security and which provides the Palestinians with statehood.

And that's something that we're determined to try to facilitate and we're working with our Israeli colleagues and friends and our Palestinian colleagues and friends, and of course, other partners in the region as well as the United States and the EU and others in order to try to facilitate that.

While seeking asylum in Norway, Medvedev had said that he feared for his life after he witnessed the killing of Russian prisoners brought to the frontline in Ukraine and the way they were mistreated.

His escape in the month of January made headlines around the world as a rare example of someone fleeing to the Western world while also claiming to have fought for Russia as a mercenary in the Ukraine war.

However, later in the month of May, he released a video on YouTube saying that he wanted to go back to Russia despite the fact that his decision could pose a risk to his life.

He said that he was "some kind of a boy in a big game" that he no longer wanted to be part of.

Risnes said Medvedev had the right to return to Russia if he wanted to, but that "a lot of changes need to happen" in order to make a safe return.

Norway intends to be among the first nations to allow deep-sea mining in its waters, which it may become if the parliament approves the proposal by the nation's government despite international calls for global abeyance.

Orkney is made up of around 70 islands and has a population of 22,000 people. Council leader James Stockan has said that the islands are considering their future in light of financial neglect by the Scottish and British governments for years.

Stockan believes that Orkney's historic Nordic connections present options. The islands were part of Norway for about 500 years until 1472.

Stockan says Orcadians regularly ask him for a return to Norway, a country that has given the islands shared cultural affinity.

"At the moment we're not getting that support coming through from other governments and we would just like to see what other alternatives are there for us," Stockan told BBC Radio on Monday.&nbsp;

A row over funding for new ferries between the islands and Scotland has brought Orkney's situation to a head.

Stockan has proposed a motion for the council. The motion is to "explore options for alternative models of governance that provide greater fiscal security and economic opportunity".

Councillors will decide whether to back it or not on Tuesday.

There are options other than rejoining Norway. These are British arrangements, like becoming a crown dependency, the system of government in the Channel Islands. Another option is of an arrangement akin to Faroe Islands, a self-governing part of Denmark.

In 2014, Scotland rejected ending the more than 300-year-old union with England in a referendum. Orkney has since looked at strengthening its autonomy.

Stockan said that in spite of a large part of Britain's North Sea oil output being processed on Orkney, the islands haven't seen sufficient benefits.

With new opportunities from offshore wind farms, he wants the islands to see a greater return.

Stockan wasn't clear about how Orkney's return to Norway, 250 miles across the North Sea, would work.

<h2>So is it final?</h2>

Not quite. Reuters cited an e-mail from a spokesperson from Norway's foreign ministry.

"This is a domestic and constitutional British matter. We have no view regarding this motion," said the e-mail as reported by Reuters.

Stockan said there were loose ends to be tied up from 1469 over the dowry which Christian I, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, failed to pay when his daughter married Scotland's James III, gifting Orkney instead.

There was no mention of the dowry from 554 years ago in the UK government's response to the question over Orkney's future.

"We will always be stronger together as one United Kingdom," a government spokesman said, as quoted by Reuters.

<h2>What have the environmental groups sought?</h2>

The two environmental groups have sought a court injunction against the government, calling for an immediate halt to the ongoing development of three Norwegian offshore oilfields – Equinor’s Breidablikk and Aker BP’s Yggdrasil and Tyrving fields.&nbsp;

The groups have based their arguments on the Norwegian constitution and its international human rights commitments. In a joint statement, the environmental groups said, “Their recent approvals violate the Norwegian constitution and Norway’s international human rights commitments, as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.”

This also comes after the groups previously lost a similar lawsuit, back in 2020, which objected to the planned development of new oil fields approved by the government. Both Greenpeace and Nature and Youth have long sought the court’s intervention against Norway’s oil and gas production.&nbsp;

The recent lawsuit also comes a day after the country’s petroleum and energy ministry green-lit another 19 oil and gas fields worth more than 200 billion Norwegian crowns ($18.5 billion).&nbsp;

The two groups have argued that the government has failed to assess the global impact of the three oil fields – Yggdrasil, Tyrving and Breidablikk – and alleged that they were “either non-existent or highly inadequate, rendering the approvals invalid.”&nbsp;

They added, “The organisations demand that the development cease until the court has assessed the legal basis.”

In a statement, the head of Greenpeace Norway, Frode Pleym, said that the “Norwegian government is hellbent on opening new oil fields that will produce fossil fuels decades into the future.” He added, “It is blatantly disregarding the climate, the science, and even our own Supreme Court in its effort to please the oil industry.” 
 
Notably, Norway is western Europe’s largest oil-producing nation as well as the biggest supplier of natural gas to the continent. The government has also previously argued that its petroleum resources are vital to Europe’s energy security.

<h2>How has the government responded?</h2>

In a statement to Reuters, State Secretary and Energy Minister, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen said that while they are confident that the approval of the recent projects has not violated the law, “Still, it’s the right of environmental organisations to try this before the court.”&nbsp;

In the context of violations of rights and the law, Eriksen also said, “The government is respecting its commitments in the Paris (climate) treaty,” as quoted by news agency AFP.&nbsp;

He added, “At the same time, we need to contribute to energy security during the transition...The authorisations we have granted ensure that Europe will continue to have access to energy in the future as well.”&nbsp;

Norwegian ambassador becomes 'proper dilliwalla' as he tries golgappas

Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), the Indian government-run shipbuilder, has bagged an international order to design and construct six new-generation 3800 DWT cargo vessels for a Norwegian firm Wilson Shipowning AS.

DWT refers to Deadweight Tonnage which is an indication of how much cargo a vessel can carry.

The USD 72 million or Rs 580 crore contract has been signed with an option for additional eight&nbsp;vessels. The first vessel is expected to be delivered by December 2024 and the remaining deliveries are to be completed by March 2026.

UCSL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited.&nbsp;

Larger and more powerful wildfires than ever have scorched some 3.8 million hectares of Canadian forests and displaced tens of thousands of residents in recent weeks. Reports have mentioned that the scale is unprecedented, with some 2,300 fires registered so far this year.&nbsp;

Southern Norway, like much of northern Europe, has also experienced an unusually dry spring and early summer so far. In southern Norway, no rain has fallen for 16 days and none is forecast in the coming days.&nbsp;

United States President Joe Biden called wildfires a "stark reminder" of climate change after some of the US cities were covered in a noxious haze again. Flights were delayed and several outdoor events were disrupted.&nbsp;

Local residents reported smoke and an acrid campfire smell over the capital Washington. Some parts of the mid-Atlantic region reached "Code Maroon",&nbsp;the highest category of the Air Quality Index (AQI), which indicated hazardous conditions.&nbsp;

Notably, more than 111 million people in the US were living under air quality alerts due to the fires, the Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday.&nbsp;

Biden said in a statement, "Millions of Americans are experiencing the effects of smoke resulting from devastating wildfires burning in Canada, another stark reminder of the impacts of climate change."&nbsp;

Biden further added that he was sending extra resources to&nbsp;Canada, including "additional firefighters and fire suppression assets such as air tankers," on top of 600 American personnel sent in May.&nbsp;
