Bringing you a gripping story that takes us to the European Nation of Norway. In a bizarre turn of events, Norwegian Neo-Nazi extremist Anders Behring Breivik, responsible for the horrific 2011 bombing and shooting rampage that claimed 77 lives, is making headlines again. But this time, it's not for his past crimes.

In a momentous decision, Norway's parliament, the Storting has given its nod to a government initiative allowing Arctic seabed mineral exploration.

This sets the course for mining exploration into parts of its seabed, including a sprawling 280,000-square-kilometre expanse, predominantly located in the icy depths of the Arctic. Despite opposition, the plan received 80 affirmative votes and only 20 dissenting voices.

Norway takes a step towards becoming a significant mineral producer

With this, Norway, a leader in oil and gas production in Western Europe, ventures into the uncharted realms of ocean floor mining — which can potentially transform it into a formidable mineral producer, reports AFP.

In an impassioned plea, policymakers underscored the importance of these minerals in developing fuel cells, solar panels, electric cars, and mobile technology.

Yet, this stride into the deep sea has provoked disquiet among environmentalists and scientists who warn that the venture threatens marine ecosystems. They caution that disruptive noise may also affect the ocean's carbon absorption capacity and that the tranquillity of marine life will be severely affected.

Countries like France and the UK have sounded the clarion call for a moratorium on deep-sea mining. In response to the concerns, the Norwegian plan asserts that each step will be taken keeping in mind "environmental considerations." However, organisations like Norway's Institute of Marine Research and the Norwegian Polar Institute have pointed out that there exists a lack of essential knowledge to assess the environmental impact of deep sea mining.

The Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud lost its navigation ability and suffered a power outage after being hit by a rogue wave while it was sailing in the North Sea, said Danish authorities and the ship's owner on Thursday (Dec 21).

The 266 passengers and 131 crew members were safe, as per the Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

"There is no power on the ship. The main engine is functioning but the navigation systems and radars are not," a spokesperson for the centre, which is responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations, said.

While the ship was sailing approximately 200 kilometres (120 miles) off Denmark's west coast and roughly 330 kilometres off Britain's east coast, strong winds tore apart the windows on the bridge of the vessel, allowing water to enter which resulted in a power failure on the bridge, said the centre.

The ship belongs to the cruise company HX which is a unit of Norway's Hurtigruten Group, it left Floroe in Norway on Thursday (Dec 21) and was due to arrive in Tilbury in the UK on Friday (Dec 22).

"Earlier this afternoon, December 21, MS Maud reported a temporary loss of power after encountering a rogue wave," Hurtigruten said in an emailed statement.

"At this time, the ship has confirmed that no serious passenger or crew injuries have been sustained as a result of the incident and the condition of the ship remains stable," it said.

A towage vessel from the civil rescue company Esvagt was then sent which was scheduled to arrive at the ship around 2230 GMT.

The ship is now being steered manually from the engine room, it can however not navigate.

Esvagt support vessels had then arrived at the spot to help the ship navigate until it could be dragged to the port.

"I don't think there is any danger to the ship now. If the captain thought so, he would have asked to be evacuated which he hasn't," the rescue centre spokesperson said.

The area was on Thursday hit by a storm with hurricane-force gusts blowing from the northwest which the Danish Meteorological Institute said would continue on Friday as well.

During the interview he revealed that the Norwegian climate and Investment Fund has invested $170 million in the Indian renewable sector, for the purposes of India achieving its climate goals.

He spoke on several issues, including the Ukraine conflict, the Israel Hamas conflict.

Sidhant Sibal: How do you characterise this relationship between India and Norway?

Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: The relationship we have with India is very strong, very resilient. We see India as a vital partner for us in terms of achieving our core foreign policy objectives, which is essentially to ensure that we are able to tackle and address the biggest global challenges of our time, namely climate change, the preservation of multilateralism, the preservation of international law, and we see India as a vital bridge builder to the global south and a country that we are adamant to partner with and that we are able to find good solutions with on a whole host of a topic.

So the meetings I've had confirmed the relationship, that the relationship is strong, and that we're both committed, both India and Norway are both committed to preserving and advancing that relationship.

Sidhant Sibal: Areas of cooperation look like clean technology and Arctic, if you can shed some light on how you plan to collaborate or cooperate with India on that?

Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: So both India and Norway have set very clear targets for how we want to transition into a greener economy and achieve our respective objectives under the Paris Agreement, so we want both, both our governments are determined to become carbon neutral. And that requires us to think long term and that requires us to think creatively in terms of how we organise our respective economies.

So we have had lots of good meetings now with various counterparts. I met with five ministers, I've met with various representatives of the Indian business sector, the Indian scientific community, Indian representatives of civil society, and it just confirmed again to me that India is a global leader when it comes to transitioning into a greener economy. There is lots of creative thinking going on both in the Indian government in terms of what is required to be more to be greener and its approach to how it gets its energy supplied, but also in terms of attaining new technology and moving forward with new means of production and energy sources.

So I have lots of things that I will take back to my counterparts back home, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Environment, and I think this the these two days in India so far have, again, just confirmed both our government's determination, but also our willingness and ability to move towards a greener economy and a greener future.

Sidhant Sibal: And on Arctic, how do you see the cooperation India's quite keen and interested in Arctic affairs?

Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: I think both India and Norway are countries that are committed to finding good solutions for the Arctic. And that entails also very strong, a very strong commitment to science and finding ways to move forward on the basis of understanding the ecosystem in the Arctic. And understanding how the Arctic can play a very critical role in moving us towards a greener future.

We've had, I think, close to 70 projects now between Norwegian and Indian scientists now taking place over the course of just the last couple of years, and that's just testimony to this mutual commitment to investigating and finding solutions in the Arctic which is conducive to a greener future.

Sidhant Sibal: Norway next year, it is expected to host the India Nordic Summit. How do you see this mechanism for engagement between India and the Nordics and any agenda specifically you look at to put when the leaders of the five Nordic countries and Indian Prime Minister will be meeting

Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: I think it's premature now to talk about the concrete agenda items. But the Nordic heads of state and also hopefully the Prime Minister of India will be determined to speak about the most pressing geopolitical issues that will be vital to address at that time in history, but also to discuss energy solutions and discuss how to combat climate change and discuss the blue economy and discuss other areas for both our governments, rather all our governments are committed to finding sustainable solutions to overcome some of the global challenges that we're faced with.

Sidhant Sibal: Any plans for Norwegian investment wealth fund, what kind of investment it has been doing globally, and India

Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: That's something that we're very determined to, to help foster in India. So the Norwegian climate and Investment Fund has invested $170 million in the Indian renewable sector, for the purposes of India achieving its climate goals. So that's something that will continue and, again, it's testimony to our strong collaboration and our mutual determination to achieve our respective climate goals.

Sidhant Sibal: So my last question to you is on global geopolitics. We have several conflicts which are happening. One is of course in Europe, the Ukraine conflict, another in the West Asia region, what's your country's stance on these conflicts?

Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: So when it comes to the conflict in Europe, and Russia's aggression in Ukraine, we have been very clear from the start. We consider what Russia has done to be a violation of international law, to be a violation of the UN Charter.

And we've been very clear in stating unequivocally that Russia needs to withdraw from the territories that it has tried to annex and that Ukraine has, under international law, a right to maintain its sovereignty. When it comes to Israel and Palestine. We see that as a very dramatic escalation and we have been very concerned.

We have been unequivocal in our condemnation of the vicious terrorist attack conducted by Hamas on Israeli civilians. And we've also been equally clear that Israel has a right to respond and act in self defense. But we have been concerned about the number of civilians that have been killed now with the course of the last few weeks close to 6000 children having died on the Gaza Strip.

So the Prime Minister, the foreign minister, and myself have been saying in no one equivocal terms, that there needs to be a humanitarian pause and end the hostilities that are ongoing.

We're glad to see the recent developments now in terms of hostages being released, and that some humanitarian aid has been allowed in and we want to see that continue.

But our overall message is perhaps that there needs to be now a sustainable resolution to this conflict, there needs to be a two state solution, which provides Israel with security and which provides the Palestinians with statehood.

And that's something that we're determined to try to facilitate and we're working with our Israeli colleagues and friends and our Palestinian colleagues and friends, and of course, other partners in the region as well as the United States and the EU and others in order to try to facilitate that.

A former commander of the mercenary group, Wagner, was arrested by the Norwegian police on suspicion that he illegally attempted to cross the border back into Russia after seeking asylum in Norway earlier this year, his lawyer said on Saturday (September 23).

Andrei Medvedev, who exited Russia in the month of January via its Arctic border with Norway, said that he ran as Russian guards fired shots at him.

Police released a statement late on Friday (September 22) saying that a man in his 20s had been taken into custody for trying to cross the Russian border illegally, but did not name him. An officer with the Finnmark local police refused to give the arrested man's identity.

Crossing the border to Russia is only permitted at specified points.

However, as per news agency Reuters reports, Medvedev's arrest was due to a misunderstanding, said his Norwegian lawyer Brynjulf Risnes.

"He was up there to see if he could find the place where he crossed (into Norway in January). He was stopped when he was in a taxi. He was never near the border ... It was never his intention to cross the border (into Russia)," Risnes said.

While seeking asylum in Norway, Medvedev had said that he feared for his life after he witnessed the killing of Russian prisoners brought to the frontline in Ukraine and the way they were mistreated.

His escape in the month of January made headlines around the world as a rare example of someone fleeing to the Western world while also claiming to have fought for Russia as a mercenary in the Ukraine war.

However, later in the month of May, he released a video on YouTube saying that he wanted to go back to Russia despite the fact that his decision could pose a risk to his life.

He said that he was "some kind of a boy in a big game" that he no longer wanted to be part of.

Risnes said Medvedev had the right to return to Russia if he wanted to, but that "a lot of changes need to happen" in order to make a safe return.

Norway intends to be among the first nations to allow deep-sea mining in its waters, which it may become if the parliament approves the proposal by the nation's government despite international calls for global abeyance.

The parliament is scheduled to discuss the government's proposal this autumn.

Why does Norway want to extract seabed minerals?

The Norwegian government in its proposal has said that deep-sea mining could help Europe in reducing its dependency on China for the supply of significant minerals that are crucial in the manufacturing of electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines and solar panels.

This is also viewed as Norway's strategy to create new marine initiatives as its top export, oil and gas from offshore, is expected to plunge slowly.

What has the Norwegian government proposed?

The Labour-led minority government has proposed to open about 280,000 square km (108,000 square miles) of ocean areas between Jan Mayen Island and the Svalbard archipelago.

The government's plan that has been put forth, observes similar principles to the opening of offshore areas for the exploration of oil and gas. From the overall area on offer, smaller zones, or blocks, would be offered to companies to explore and produce from.

The minerals that Norway wants to extract from the seabed

"Substantial" amounts of metals and minerals, ranging from copper to rare earth elements, were discovered in a government-sponsored survey.

The minerals that were found in polymetallic sulphides, also known as "black smokers", were some 3,000 metres (9,842 feet) deep. It's where seawater contacts magma coming up through the surface through tectonic cracks and then is pushed back, taking dissolved metals and sulphur.

Rare earth elements, such as scandium, were also found in manganese crusts which grow on bedrock at a speed of one centimetre (0.4 inch) per million years. Norwegian surveys have proven crust deposits with thicknesses of up to 40 centimetres.

What is deep-sea mining? How does it affect the environment?

The process of retrieving mineral deposits from the deep seabed, the ocean below 200m, is called deep-sea mining. The process depletes terrestrial deposits. It is said that the rising demand for metals means deep-sea mining may begin soon. However, a number of research suggest that it could be destructive for biodiversity and ecosystems.

According to scientists, the process also risks disrupting the ocean's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide emitted by human activities, and its noise interferes with the communication of species such as whales.

The interest in this area is gaining momentum because of the depletion of terrestrial metal reserves such as copper, nickel, aluminium, manganese, zinc, lithium, and cobalt.

These metals are also in high demand for the manufacture of devices such as cell phones, wind turbines, solar panels, and batteries.

Scientists are concerned, but some support the process of deep-sea mining as they argue that these minerals found beneath the sea are needed if the world is to meet the growing demand for green technologies.

How are minerals mined from the seabed?

Though there hasn't been a technology invented to produce seabed minerals, however, some machines have been developed to examine the production of minerals elsewhere in the world.

The researchers in Norway deployed undersea robots and drilling machines in order to collect samples of minerals on the ocean floor.

In Norway, the extraction of minerals would most likely involve cutting and crushing the rocks before bringing those to the surface.

What do other countries say about Norway's proposal?

Denmark released a statement saying that the environmental study conducted by Norway for the area opening wasn't good enough, while Iceland has raised doubts about Norway's exclusive rights to explore for seabed minerals near the Arctic Svalbard archipelago.

However, the European Parliament has also called on member-states to back global abeyance on seabed mining. The European Commission has also been championing a deep-sea mining moratorium until more information comes out about its risks.

Norway should withdraw deep sea mining plans, says key backer

Meanwhile, a key alley on Thursday (September 14), released a statement saying that Norway's minority government should call off its proposal to open a vast Arctic offshore area to deep sea mining and also put forth a moratorium for at least ten years on the activity.

"We will not vote for the proposal that the government has put forward. We think that it should be sent back to the government," Lars Haltbrekken, SV's spokesman on energy and environment, told Reuters.

"We would like to have a moratorium for at least ten years so that we can find out more (about the environmental consequences) before we start digging for minerals on the seabed," he added.

Norway will impose a $98,500 (1 million crowns) a day fine on Meta over privacy breaches, starting August 14, the country's data protection authority said on Monday.

Norway will impose a $98,500 (1 million crowns) a day fine on Meta over privacy breaches, starting August 14, the country's data protection authority said on Monday. Datatilsynet, the Norwegian regulator had issued a warning about the fine last month if Facebook-owned Meta did not address privacy breaches identified by the body. “As of next Monday, a daily fine of 1 million crown will start to apply,” Tobias Judin, head of Datatilsynet’s international section was quoted as saying by Reuters. The Norwegian watchdog said Meta cannot harvest user data, including their physical location and employ it to send targeted advertising at them, a practice often used by most tech companies to generate revenue. The Mark Zuckerberg-owned company had up until August 4 to address the issue and inform the regulator that it had handled the issue. However, Meta failed to take a call and the watchdog took action, with fines running till November 3. “According to Meta, this will take several months, at the very earliest, for them to implement...And we don’t know what the consent mechanism will look like. And in the (meantime), peoples’ rights are being violated, every single day," Judin added. Watch | Meta fined $1.3 billion by European Union for sending user data to US: Report × Meta fined heavily by the EU This is not the first instance when Meta has received a hefty fine amount. In May, the company was fined a record $1.3 billion (1.2 billion euros) by the European Union for failing to comply with a warning by the top EU court related to the data transfer of Facebook’s EU users to servers in the United States. According to Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), which acts on behalf of the EU, the social media giant failed to pay heed to a top court warning aimed at protecting users’ data from the security services in the US once it’s shipped to servers across the Atlantic. Norge Mining, a prominent mining company, has announced the discovery of an enormous phosphate rock deposit in southwestern Norway. According to the company, this deposit is estimated to contain up to 70 billion tonnes of the non-renewable resource, making it a game-changer for the global demand for batteries and solar panels up to 100 years, as reported by the Independent.

The site also holds deposits of strategic minerals such as titanium and vanadium, further bolstering its significance.

Phosphate rock, renowned for its high phosphorus concentration, is a vital component in the production of green technologies.

Why is this a groundbreaking find?

Despite huge demand, phosphorus availability has been limited, resulting in significant supply challenges. With this groundbreaking find, Norge Mining aims to alleviate these concerns and potentially revolutionise the renewable energy industry.

Previously, Russia held control over the world's largest ultra-pure phosphate rock deposits, raising concerns about the high supply risk associated with these "critical raw materials."

The European Union, heavily reliant on phosphate rock imports, including from China, Iraq, and Syria, expressed apprehension about potential shortages. The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies published a report highlighting the EU's dependence on imports and the urgent need for alternative sources.

Scientific journal Nature warned of impending supply disruptions, citing Russia's invasion of Ukraine and subsequent economic sanctions as factors that could lead to market volatility. As the global economy consumes approximately 50 million tonnes of phosphorus annually, experts have raised the alarm about a potential "phosphogeddon" if supply trends persist.

A paradigm shift? Massive phosphate deposit found in Norway, could meet global battery demand for 100 years

The council leader of Britain's Orkney Islands, an archipelago about 10 miles off the north coast of Scotland, said that the islands are considering "alternative forms of governance". This could include becoming part of Norway.

Orkney is made up of around 70 islands and has a population of 22,000 people. Council leader James Stockan has said that the islands are considering their future in light of financial neglect by the Scottish and British governments for years.

Stockan believes that Orkney's historic Nordic connections present options. The islands were part of Norway for about 500 years until 1472.

Stockan says Orcadians regularly ask him for a return to Norway, a country that has given the islands shared cultural affinity.

"At the moment we're not getting that support coming through from other governments and we would just like to see what other alternatives are there for us," Stockan told BBC Radio on Monday.

A row over funding for new ferries between the islands and Scotland has brought Orkney's situation to a head.

Stockan has proposed a motion for the council. The motion is to "explore options for alternative models of governance that provide greater fiscal security and economic opportunity".

Councillors will decide whether to back it or not on Tuesday.

There are options other than rejoining Norway. These are British arrangements, like becoming a crown dependency, the system of government in the Channel Islands. Another option is of an arrangement akin to Faroe Islands, a self-governing part of Denmark.

In 2014, Scotland rejected ending the more than 300-year-old union with England in a referendum. Orkney has since looked at strengthening its autonomy.

Stockan said that in spite of a large part of Britain's North Sea oil output being processed on Orkney, the islands haven't seen sufficient benefits.

With new opportunities from offshore wind farms, he wants the islands to see a greater return.

Stockan wasn't clear about how Orkney's return to Norway, 250 miles across the North Sea, would work.

So is it final?

Not quite. Reuters cited an e-mail from a spokesperson from Norway's foreign ministry.

"This is a domestic and constitutional British matter. We have no view regarding this motion," said the e-mail as reported by Reuters.

Stockan said there were loose ends to be tied up from 1469 over the dowry which Christian I, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, failed to pay when his daughter married Scotland's James III, gifting Orkney instead.

There was no mention of the dowry from 554 years ago in the UK government's response to the question over Orkney's future.

"We will always be stronger together as one United Kingdom," a government spokesman said, as quoted by Reuters.

Two environmental groups, the Nordic branch of Greenpeace and Natur og Ungdom (Nature and Youth or Young Friends of the Earth Norway), on Thursday (June 29) said that they are suing the Norwegian state for violating the country’s constitution and international human rights commitments. This comes as Norway recently approved three offshore oilfields and new oil and gas projects worth nearly $19 billion.

What have the environmental groups sought?

The two environmental groups have sought a court injunction against the government, calling for an immediate halt to the ongoing development of three Norwegian offshore oilfields – Equinor’s Breidablikk and Aker BP’s Yggdrasil and Tyrving fields.

The groups have based their arguments on the Norwegian constitution and its international human rights commitments. In a joint statement, the environmental groups said, “Their recent approvals violate the Norwegian constitution and Norway’s international human rights commitments, as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.”

This also comes after the groups previously lost a similar lawsuit, back in 2020, which objected to the planned development of new oil fields approved by the government. Both Greenpeace and Nature and Youth have long sought the court’s intervention against Norway’s oil and gas production.

The recent lawsuit also comes a day after the country’s petroleum and energy ministry green-lit another 19 oil and gas fields worth more than 200 billion Norwegian crowns ($18.5 billion).

The two groups have argued that the government has failed to assess the global impact of the three oil fields – Yggdrasil, Tyrving and Breidablikk – and alleged that they were “either non-existent or highly inadequate, rendering the approvals invalid.”

They added, “The organisations demand that the development cease until the court has assessed the legal basis.”

In a statement, the head of Greenpeace Norway, Frode Pleym, said that the “Norwegian government is hellbent on opening new oil fields that will produce fossil fuels decades into the future.” He added, “It is blatantly disregarding the climate, the science, and even our own Supreme Court in its effort to please the oil industry.”

Notably, Norway is western Europe’s largest oil-producing nation as well as the biggest supplier of natural gas to the continent. The government has also previously argued that its petroleum resources are vital to Europe’s energy security.

How has the government responded?

In a statement to Reuters, State Secretary and Energy Minister, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen said that while they are confident that the approval of the recent projects has not violated the law, “Still, it’s the right of environmental organisations to try this before the court.”

In the context of violations of rights and the law, Eriksen also said, “The government is respecting its commitments in the Paris (climate) treaty,” as quoted by news agency AFP.

He added, “At the same time, we need to contribute to energy security during the transition...The authorisations we have granted ensure that Europe will continue to have access to energy in the future as well.”

Environmental groups sue Norwegian state, ask court to halt billion-dollar oil projects

Is it golgappa or pani puri? New Delhi and Mumbai may fight for eternity to settle this question, but that won't stop any foodie from savouring either of them. Although having slight regional differences, this street food is a favourite crunchy snack with a unique combination of sweet and spicy. The margin for customisation makes it palatable for every tongue.

Norwegian Ambassador to India and Bhutan Hans Jacob Frydenlund was in for a treat when he tasted the golgappas in the Indian capital. He not only enjoyed the dish but also posted the pic on his official Twitter handle. He had golgappas in New Delhi's South Extension market.

"It’s a #golgappa Saturday at South extension market! Or pani puri? Or what should I call it? No matter what it’s called, it’s yum! I am turning into a proper dilliwala now. What else should I try? Any suggestions?" he tweeted

The tweet was posted on Saturday (June 24) and by the time of publishing this story, had garnered nearly 200K views. More than 2,000 people liked the post.

The ambassador's tweet set off conversations with amused Indians asking him about his experience. Frydenlund replied to many of the comments.

"I hope you enjoyed the tangy taste, a great appetiser..," said Navika Srikant to which the ambassador said, "Indeed! It’s a blast of flavours in one go."

Golgappa consists of a crunchy, spherical, edible 'puri' which serves as a container for the water which is made spicy or sweet by mixing herbs and spices. Mashed potatoes can also be added. The delightful challenge is to devour the entire puri in one go and enjoy the sweet, spicy, tangy taste. The person who is eating needs to forget all table manners and open his mouth as wide as possible while eating golgappas. This is precisely what Ambassador Frydenlund is doing in the photo he tweeted.

His tweet set off many interesting conversations in which Indians from across the country invited him to try regional versions of golgappas. Those from Mumbai urged him to try the 'pani puri', while residents of the North Indian city of Lucknow assertively said that their city made it the best.

The ambassador was showered with suggestions for street foods from different parts of the country. He expressed enthusiasm and said that he would love to visit these cities and enjoy the tasty food there.

Indian govt-run shipyard to build 'future-proof dry cargo vessel' for Norway

With the growing interest in mineral deposits, countries have joined the race to mine the deep sea. Norway intends to be among the first nations to allow deep-sea mining in its waters. The country plans to mine its continental shelf to procure minerals critical for renewable energy technologies.

Why Norway wants to mine the deep sea?

Toxic wildfire smoke from Canada has impacted millions of people in North America, with people being alerted about the health risks of poor air quality. The North American skies have been shrouded with orange-tinged smog caused by the wildfires. The smog has obscured the famous skyscrapers in the region and forced the residents to wear face masks. The cities along the US East Coast have also issued air quality alerts. On the other hand, Ukraine is grappling with a devastating flood crisis as the destruction of the Kakhovka dam has caused severe flooding in southern areas.
