Scientists have discovered a submarine volcano near Norway’s Bear Island, or Bjørnøya, in the Barents Sea, which continuously spews methane and mud. The volcano has been named Borealis Mud Volcano, and it is only the second of its kind ever discovered in Norwegian waters.

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has appealed to people to “avoid contact" with a beluga whale so that the animal doesn't suffer any injuries accidentally or lose its life.

The whale, who has been given the nickname "Hvaldimir", received international fame in 2019 after someone spotted it wearing a specially made harness which had mounts for a camera. The discovery made experts believe that the whale is likely to have been trained by the Russian military.

Since 2019, the whale has “been travelling along the Norwegian coast” and stopping at some point along the way, as per the directorate, which further stated that Hvaldimir “tends to stay at farms where it has been able to catch fish, grazing on surplus feed.”

Hvaldimir is famous for following boats and playing with people on board. The whale, which is Norway's protected species, stays in inner Oslofjord, said the directorate.

This “means that it has arrived in a very densely populated area, and the risk that the whale may be injured due to human contact has become significantly greater,” it further stated.

Deadly avalanches in Norway resulted in the death of four people, including tourists, whereas a house and a barn were swept into the sea, as per reports quoting police authorities. A series of avalanches hit Norway's far northern parts.

According to police, a group of tourists was caught in an avalanche in the Kvalvikdalen valley in Norway's far north Lyngen municipality on Friday afternoon. Lyngen Mayor Dan-Havard Johnsen apprised the media that the tourists were from Italy, however, their nationality is not yet clearly known.

One is reportedly in critical condition, the spokesman said. One avalanche also hit in Tromso, where one person from a group of five foreign tourists died.

Norway experiences avalanches every year, particularly during the winter months when there is significant snowfall. Avalanches occur when snow builds up on a terrain until the weight of the snow becomes too great and the snowpack slides downhill, sometimes with great force potentially hurting, or killing people in the area.

An Oxford University-led study has found alarming levels of toxic PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals” in the ice around Svalbard, Norway which pose a risk to the region’s wildlife, reported the Guardian. The Norwegian Arctic ice consists of 26 types of PFAS compounds which once the ice melts can be passed to ecosystems like Arctic fjords and tundra.

The PFAs refer to a class of around 12,000 chemicals which are often found in consumer products which resist water, heat or stains and are also called “forever chemicals” since they do not naturally break down over time. Additionally, these chemicals are linked to a number of diseases including cancer, liver disease, etc. Therefore, these contaminants, once passed on, can affect the entire food web from small organisms like plankton or fish to apex predators in the region like polar bears.

Notably, high levels of PFAs have been found in the polar bear's bloodstream, as per the report. The study found the levels of these “forever chemicals” in the ice, were higher than the United States advisory drinking water limits were.

“As a polar bear, you have exposure to toxic man-made chemicals, and stresses from a changing habitat,” said Dr William Hartz, a lead author on the study, as per the Guardian. He also spoke about how this “washout of contaminants” occurs seasonally and some PFAs seem mobile during melts.

The lead author also noted the “doubling up effect” on animals as climate changes and ice melts since the climate has reportedly been warming up in Svalbard faster than the world average. The study also found high levels of TFA, a refrigeration byproduct caused by hydrofluoroolefin (HFOs) after chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), a potent greenhouse gas used for refrigeration, was phased out.

The HFOs, which are also greenhouse gasses once released, can turn into TFA, the levels of which the study finds have been increasing in the Arctic. Additionally, TFA and other PFAS compounds are highly mobile and can even move through the atmosphere to anywhere in the world. While TFA is said to be less toxic when compared to several other PFAs, its limited knowledge needs addressing, said the authors, as no one is fully aware of the damage these compounds might be causing to the environment.

Archaeologists have found a flat, square block of a brownish runestone in Norway and claimed it to be the world's oldest, with inscriptions dating back to almost 2,000 years. The stone is 31 cm by 32 cm (12.2 inches by 12.3 inches). The Museum of Cultural History in Oslo said that this runestone might be the earliest example of words recorded in writing in Scandinavia. It said that this brown runestone is among "the oldest runic inscriptions ever found" and is the oldest datable in the world, AP reported.

Kristel Zilmer, a professor at the University of Oslo said, "This find will give us a lot of knowledge about the use of runes in the early iron age. This may be one of the first attempts to use runes in Norway and Scandinavia on stone."
