Scientists discover rare methane-spewing underwater volcano in Norwegian waters

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has appealed to people to “avoid contact" with a beluga whale so that the animal doesn't suffer any injuries accidentally or lose its life.

The whale, who has been given the nickname "Hvaldimir", received international fame in 2019 after someone spotted it wearing a specially made harness which had mounts for a camera. The discovery made experts believe that the whale is likely to have been trained by the Russian military.

Since 2019, the whale has “been travelling along the Norwegian coast” and stopping at some point along the way, as per the directorate, which further stated that Hvaldimir “tends to stay at farms where it has been able to catch fish, grazing on surplus feed.”

Hvaldimir is famous for following boats and playing with people on board. The whale, which is Norway's protected species, stays in inner Oslofjord, said the directorate.&nbsp;

This “means that it has arrived in a very densely populated area, and the risk that the whale may be injured due to human contact has become significantly greater,” it further stated.&nbsp;

<h2>Whale suffered minor injuries, says fisheries director</h2>

Fisheries Director Frank Bakke-Jensen, in a statement on Wednesday, said that “so far there have only been minor incidents where the whale has suffered minor injuries, primarily from contact with boats.”

However, he appealed to people to maintain their distance, “even though the whale is tame and used to being around people.”

“We especially encourage people in boats to keep a good distance to avoid the whale being injured or, in the worst case, killed by boat traffic,” stated Bakke-Jensen.&nbsp;

Considering the dangers, Bakke-Jensen was asked if the whale should be kept in captivity.

“We have always communicated that the whale in question is a free-living animal and we see no reason to capture it and put it behind barriers,” he stated.

However, now that the whale is “in a more vulnerable area and access to food may be limited, we will consider different measures. But it is too early to say anything concrete about that yet," added Bakke-Jensen.&nbsp;

Sweden launched the rocket on Monday at 07:20 local time (05:20 GMT) from the Esrange Space Centre, before it fell into a Norwegian mountain range.&nbsp;

The centre's owner Swedish Space Corporation (SSC), which has also been running it, issued an apology and said that it is investigating the case.&nbsp;

However, Sweden still faced criticism from Norway for not formally notifying the nation regarding the launch.&nbsp;

As per the SSC, the rocket initially touched an altitude of 250km (155 miles) and then fell into zero gravity, where experiments were being conducted by them.&nbsp;

The rocket then made a landing 40km northwest of the landing site in Malselv municipality which is located in the north of Norway, around 10km from the closest inhabited area.&nbsp;

“It landed in the mountains at 1,000 metres altitude, and 10km from the closest settlement,” said Philip Ohlsson, head of communications at SSC.&nbsp;

"There are routines in place when things go wrong and we inform both Swedish and Norwegian governments, and other actors," he added.&nbsp;

No one suffered any injuries and no damage to material was reported.&nbsp;

The scientific instrument, &nbsp;known as the payload, was onboard the rocket and after its failed landing was recovered in "good condition" and was sent back to Esrange through a helicopter, as per the SSC.

"This is a deviation that we take seriously," stated Marko Kohberg from the Esrange Space Centre.

"It is still too early to speculate about the cause, and we await more information from the current investigation," he added.&nbsp;

The SCC stated that, after the incident, they were shortly contacted by the Norwegian and Swedish authorities "according to routine".

However, the foreign ministry of Norway has stated that they were not properly informed about either the landing of the rocket or its payload's recovery and that any unauthorised activity which takes place within its borders is taken seriously by them.

“The crash of a rocket like this is a very serious incident that can cause serious damage,” the foreign ministry said.&nbsp;

"When such a border violation occurs, it is crucial that those responsible immediately inform the relevant Norwegian authorities through the proper channels," it stated.&nbsp;

The rocket, which is known as Texus-58, is part of the European programme which was commissioned by the European Space Agency.

Air force commanders from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark said on Friday (March 25) that they signed a letter of intent to create a unified Nordic air defence aimed at countering the rising threat from Russia. The air force commanders had first discussed the closer cooperation at a meeting in Sweden in November last year.&nbsp;

“The ultimate goal is to be able to operate seamlessly together as one force by developing a Nordic concept for joint air operations based on already known NATO methodology,” Denmark's air force said in a statement.&nbsp;

Speaking to the news agency Reuters, Major General Jan Dam, the commander of the Danish air force, said that the move to integrate the air forces of the Nordic countries was triggered by Russia's offensive in Ukraine in February last year. Major General Dam added that the combined fleet could be compared to a large European country.&nbsp;

Reuters reported on Friday that Sweden has over 90 Gripens jets; Norway has 57 F-16 fighter jets and 37 F-35 fighter jets with 15 more of the latter on order, and Finland has 62 F/A-18 Hornet jets and 64 F-35s on order. Denmark, meanwhile, has 58 F-16s and 27 F-35s on order.&nbsp;

However, it was unclear how many of these aircraft were operational.&nbsp;

The signing at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany last week was attended by NATO's Air Command chief General James Hecker, who also oversees the US Air Force in the region, the news agency reported.&nbsp;

Norway and Denmark are already members of NATO. Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO last year and Finland is expected to join the inter-governmental military alliance within weeks. Sweden, on the other hand, is facing a delay due to resistance from Turkey and Hungary.&nbsp;

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg travelled to the Troll A platform in the North Sea on Friday (March 17). The platform extracts gas from Norway's biggest gas field. The visit has drawn attention to and underlined importance of Norwegian gas for the energy security of Europe. After Russia reduced natural gas supply to Europe last year, Norway became the largest gas supplier to the EU.

Stoltenberg and von der Leyen will "discuss the protection and resilience of critical infrastructure and gas supplies to Europe" with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere and Equinor CEO Anders Opedal, the PM's office said in a statement.

Security at Norwegian petroleum installations was increased after the explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines on Sept. 26, 2022 in the Baltic Sea, with NATO allies providing military support.

Troll alone covered 11.3% of EU gas consumption last year, according to operator Equinor. The field accounts for one third of daily Norwegian gas exports to Europe.

The film is based on a real-life incident where an Indian couple's children were taken away from them by Norway's Child Welfare service on the pretext of bad parenting has gone down well with the country's government. The Norwegian Ambassador to India called the movie a 'work of fiction' and stated it had factual inaccuracies. 
 
In the film, the Indian couple fights a legal battle to get back their children who are put under the Norwegian foster system due to cultural differences in child-rearing.

"Children will never be taken away from their families based on cultural differences described. Eating with their hands or having children sleeping in bed with their parents are not considered practices harmful to children and are not uncommon in Norway, irrespective of cultural background," the Norwegian Embassy said in its statement, adding that "some general facts must be set right". 
 
"The reason for placing children in alternative care is if they are subject to neglect, violence or other forms of abuse."

Norwegian Ambassador to India, Hans Jacob Frydenlund stated that the country is a democratic, multicultural society.

"In Norway, we value and respect different family systems and cultural practices, also when these are different to what we are accustomed to - apart from corporal punishment in the upbringing. There is zero tolerance for violence in any shape or form," he said in the statement shared on Twitter." 
 
In the statement, the Norwegian government also added that Child welfare is not driven by profit and refuted the claim that the film made that "the more children put into the foster system, the more money they make". "Alternative care is a matter of responsibility and is not a money-making entity," it said. 
 
The Norway envoy said children are placed in alternative care when they face neglect or are "subject to violence or other forms of abuse." 
 
The statement highlighted that "such experiences" are difficult for those involved in it and that "child welfare cases are not easy" for the children, parents, and the Child Welfare Service. 
 
Back in 2011, the Norway government had alleged that Sagarika Bhattacharya had force-fed her kids using her hands and the couple were also accused of beating their children, not giving them enough space to play and giving them unsuitable clothes and toys. 
 
The case led to a diplomatic row between India and Norway and the court eventually gave custody of the children to their uncle who brought them back to India. The couple eventually separated and the mother had to take the legal route to get custody of her children.

The numbers are no surprise. As per an AFP report, deforestation in the Amazon had already broken the record for February just 17 days into the month. However, these were not the figures President Lula was hoping for after two months in office.&nbsp;

Amazon forest, which is often referred to as the "lungs of the planet", is a critical buffer against global warming.

An Oxford University-led study has found alarming levels of toxic PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals” in the ice around Svalbard, Norway which pose a risk to the region’s wildlife, reported the Guardian. The Norwegian Arctic ice consists of 26 types of PFAS compounds which once the ice melts can be passed to ecosystems like Arctic fjords and tundra.&nbsp;

The PFAs refer to a class of around 12,000 chemicals which are often found in consumer products which resist water, heat or stains and are also called “forever chemicals” since they do not naturally break down over time. Additionally, these chemicals are linked to a number of diseases including cancer, liver disease, etc.&nbsp;Therefore, these contaminants, once passed on, can affect the entire food web from small organisms like plankton or fish to apex predators in the region like polar bears.&nbsp;

Notably, high levels of PFAs have been found in the polar bear's bloodstream, as per the report. The study found the levels of these “forever chemicals” in the ice, were higher than the United States advisory drinking water limits were.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Norwegian Arctic ice consists of 26 types of PFAS compounds which once the ice melts can be passed to ecosystems like Arctic fjords and tundra. The PFAs refer to a class of around 12,000 chemicals which are often found in consumer products which resist water, heat or stains and are also called “forever chemicals” since they do not naturally break down over time. Additionally, these chemicals are linked to a number of diseases including cancer, liver disease, etc. Therefore, these contaminants, once passed on, can affect the entire food web from small organisms like plankton or fish to apex predators in the region like polar bears. Notably, high levels of PFAs have been found in the polar bear's bloodstream, as per the report. Norway's national wealth fund reported a record loss for the entire year of 2022 of 1.64 trillion Norwegian kroner ($164 billion), blaming "very unusual" market conditions. The Government Pension Fund Global, one of the biggest investors in the world, reported a -14.1 per cent&nbsp;return for the year, which it claimed was 0.88 percentage points higher than the return on its benchmark index.

“The market was impacted by war in Europe, high inflation, and rising interest rates. This negatively impacted both the equity market and bond market at the same time, which is very unusual,” Norges Bank Investment Management CEO Nicolai Tangen said in a statement.

“All the sectors in the equity market had negative returns, with the exception of energy,” Tangen said.

In 2008, during the height of the global financial crisis, the fund suffered its previous biggest loss of 633 billion kroner.

The runestone was initially found in late December 2021 during an excavation of a grave near Tyrifjord, in West Oslo, but is being announced now because the team&nbsp;needed time to analyse and date it, added&nbsp;Zilmer.

The stone has several types of inscriptions but does not make all linguistic sense.&nbsp;

Other items in the cremation pit included burned bones, and charcoal, indicating that it might have been inscribed between AD1 and AD250.&nbsp;

Zilmer called the discovery as the "most sensational thing" that she has had as an academic.

Older runes have been discovered but not on stone. One of the earliest runic was found in Denmark on a bone cone.

As per reports Britain is also considering contributing to the fund.

The latest death has reportedly taken place in a cemetary in the city of Javanroud as residents marked the end of a 40-day mourning period for slain protesters.

Security forces fired live ammunitions and tear gas killing Borhan Eliasi. Eight others were wounded. AFP said that the report could not be independently verified.

Two of those wounded were said to be in critical condition.&nbsp;

Activists have used social media to call for gatherings in Tehran and other cities to protest the worsening economic situation.

The sanctions-hit country replaced its central bank chief on Thursday, state media said, after the rial shed nearly a third of its value on the parallel market in the past two months.

US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported small gatherings in the capital and the central cities of Isfahan and Najafabad, sharing videos of protesters chanting anti-regime slogans. AFP was unable to immediately verify the footage.
