Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has petitioned the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) to promptly schedule the hearing of all cases involving former prime minister, Imran Khan.

The party, as per The Express Tribune, has also urged Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa to authorise the live broadcast of the said hearings. This comes as Khan has been charged with "criminal conspiracy" for "masterminding" the May 9 attack on army installations and for inciting the people to mutiny. The charge, as per news agency PTI, carries a maximum sentence of death penalty.

Condemning the delay in Imran Khan's bail application by the Islamabad High Court, a PTI spokesperson said there was a need for the chief justice to take immediate cognisance of the miscarriage of justice transpiring within the country and to ensure that the principles of justice were upheld in all subordinate courts.

Back in May, Khan, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman, was arrested by paramilitary Rangers in a corruption case. His arrest at the time triggered massive nationwide protests, during which dozens of military installations and government buildings, including the military headquarters in Rawalpindi, were damaged or torched during the riots.

Additionally, as per the news agency report, over 100 vehicles of police and other security agencies were set ablaze by the angry hoards. Later, Khan was released on bail.

Subsequently, Khan was arrested in the Toshakhana gifts case. He was handed down a three-year imprisonment but was later granted bail in the case after the higher court suspended the verdict.

However, he was once again re-arrested in the cipher case under Pakistan's Official Secrets Act and has been in Punjab province's Attock Jail since August 5, 2023.

Khan has reportedly approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC), seeking post-arrest bail in the cipher case.

As humanity ventures out to the vast cosmos outside our planet, the space-junk we leave behind is growing.

Satellites, spacecraft and other launches all leave behind some junk littering the Earth's orbit, increasing the risk of collisions. To lighten this space-junk load, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed a rule.

Shedding the space-junk

The FAA has proposed that the amount of time a private rocket's upper stages stay in orbit should be limited.

In a draft form released on Wednesday (September 20), the FAA, via its proposed rule, seeks "to limit the growth of new orbital debris and reduce the potential for collisions with spacecraft and satellites to promote a sustainable space environment."

Why is this important?

This junk can put space missions and satellite launches at significant risk. Upon launch, the space vehicles can potentially collide with the junk that is crowding the planet's orbit.

In a statement, the FAA said "If left unchecked, the accumulation of orbital debris will increase the risk of collisions and clutter orbits used for human spaceflight and for satellites providing communications, weather and global positioning system services."

As per the FAA, as of July 2023, the Earth's orbit contains over 23,000 orbital objects of sizes 10 cm and above. Furthermore, there are around one-half million objects sized between 1 and 10 cm, over 100 million larger than 1mm.

How will FAA achieve this junk shedding?

The proposed rule provides commercial space operators with five options to choose from. These options relate to the disposal of the upper stages of launch vehicles.

As per the FAA website, these include: conducting a controlled re-entry; moving the upper stage to a less congested storage or graveyard orbit; sending the upper stage to an Earth-escape orbit; the retrieval of the upper stage (called active debris removal) within five years; or performing an uncontrolled atmospheric disposal.

Strictly limiting the uncontrolled reentry of the upper stages can take away the uncertainty of where it might land. This will help mitigate the risk to people on the ground and in flight, says FAA.

"Shortening the removal deadline would decrease the risk of orbital debris causing damage to spacecraft, which could create more debris, shorten another spacecraft’s mission or endanger the lives of human spaceflight participants," states the proposed rule, as reported by space.com.

"Given that the entire mission lifetime of upper stages and their components is quite short, and spent upper stages pose a significant risk of debris propagation the longer they are in orbit, it may be appropriate to have a shorter disposal timeline of 5 years or another time period less than 25 years," it notes.

Thailand's prime minister has said that he is against the recreational use of cannabis. PM Srettha Thavisin has said that within six months his government will "rectify" its cannabis policy and limit its use to medical purposes.

Need to rewrite the law

Talking to Bloomberg Television, he said the "law will need to be rewritten."

"It needs to be rectified. We can have that regulated for medical use only," he added.

The Thai PM also said that there will be no compromise regarding cannabis' recreational use, as the drug use has been "widespread lately."

Some tourist operators have welcomed the move towards a change in law, and say that loose industry regulations have caused problems like marijuana overdose.

Decriminalised narcotic

Thailand is the first Asian nation to decriminalise cannabis. In many Asian countries, the use and possession of cannabis carries heavy penalties and jail time.

Last year, in June, the nation delisted parts of the marijuana plant as a narcotic. The move was undertaken by the former coalition government.

This, as per the Guardian, led to a boom of cannabis cafés and weed dispensaries in popular tourist destinations like Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Bangkok.

However, the new Prime Minister Thavisin doesn't agree with the move.

"I don't support the recreational use of cannabis... only its use for medicinal purposes," Thavisin told local media last week.

"If this problem spreads in society, it may cause wider narcotic drug problems," he said in an interview with Thai outlet The Standard.

However, he vowed that for the benefit of the people, he would find a middle ground.

Currently, in Thailand, people older than 20 years of age are legally allowed to use cannabis within their residences. Additionally, food containing cannabis extracts can be consumed within licensed restaurant premises. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women are not allowed to consume cannabis or its products.

The naming of Lachlan Murdoch, the eldest son of Rupert Murdoch, as chairman of Fox and News Corporation solidifies his position as one of the most powerful media barons in the world. Rupert called Lachlan a "passionate, principled leader" who can take the company further.

In a note to the staff, reported by the Wall Street Journal, Rupert said, "For my entire professional life, I have been engaged daily with news and ideas, and that will not change. But the time is right for me to take on different roles." The 92-year-old will now become chairman emeritus of the two corporations, the company said in the release.

Lachlan in a statement said, "On behalf of the Fox and News Corp boards of directors, leadership teams, and all the shareholders who have benefited from his hard work, I congratulate my father on his remarkable 70-year career."

Here are five things you must know about Rupert's media inheritor:

Early Life

Lachlan Keith Murdoch was born on 08 September 1971. He was born in Wimbledon, England. He is a British-American businessman and mass media heir. Lachlan is the eldest son of mass media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his former wife and Scottish journalist and author Anna Maria dePeyster.

Left the company after a feud with ex-boss

After a feud with the then-boss of Fox News, Roger Ailes, Lachlan in 2005 left the company and set up an Australian investment firm which invested money in media and marketing companies. However, during the time because of the phone hacking scandal and his father's divorce in 2014, he returned thinking his father needed his help.

Complicated relationship with Donald Trump

Lachlan will now have to navigate with former President Donald Trump, with whom he shares an on-off relationship. Trump has appeared several times on Fox News and criticised the channel while praising the rivals. The Australian Financial Review recently placed Lachlan 33rd on their list of the country's richest people, with a total net worth of $2.1 billion (A$3.35 billion).

A federal court in Delaware has ordered US President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden to appear in the court on October 3 to face firearms charges, a day after his lawyers sought permission he be allowed to attend the first hearing virtually.

A federal court in Delaware has ordered US President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden to appear in the court on October 3 to face firearms charges, a day after his lawyers sought permission he be allowed to attend the first hearing virtually. US Magistrate Judge from the District of Delaware, Christopher Burke, rejected Hunter's request, saying he should not receive special treatment. "In the end, the Court agrees with both the Defendant and the Government, that Defendant should not receive special treatment in this matter — absent some unusual circumstance, he should be treated just as would any other defendant in our Court," Burke stated in the filing. The federal judge, however, gave Hunter an extra week to comply, from the date originally set for the hearing, September 26. The president's 53-year-old son was charged last week by a federal court in Delaware on two counts related to filing a form wherein he falsely claimed that he was not using drugs illegally at the time of purchase of the gun. Meanwhile, a third count alleges that based on the false statements, he possessed a firearm while using narcotics, during an 11-day period in October of that year. However, after the indictment, Hunter's lawyer Abbe David Lowell wrote a letter to the judge on Tuesday (September 19) and requested his client's first appearance take place via video conference whilst adding that Biden Jr. will plead not guilty. "Mr Biden understands both the charges against him and his rights...and we believe the Court can be assured of that fact by conducting this initial appearance by video," read the letter. "Mr Biden also will enter a plea of not guilty, and there is no reason why he cannot utter those two words by video conference," it added. The US Federal Reserve has decided to hit pause on the interest rate hike, a decision taken after two days of deliberation at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. While interest rates remain at a 22-year high between 5.25-5.5 per cent, the Fed forecasted an additional rate hike before the end of the year to bring down inflation.

"The Committee decided to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 5-1/4 to 5-1/2 per cent. The Committee will continue to assess additional information and its implications for monetary policy," read the statement by FOMC.

Since March last year, the Fed has been pursuing a super-aggressive strategy of rate hikes to thwart consumer and business demands in a battle against price pressures that have become the Achilles heel for the federal agency.

Economists believe that keeping interest rates high makes it costlier for people to borrow money. With borrowing getting expensive, consumers are forced to spend less. When spending declines, there is a fall in demand. It is therefore postulated that weakening demand will eventually reduce the price of goods.

Ancient humans were big on reuse. An analysis by the University of Bern has revealed that Neolithic humans repurposed the bones of the deceased and used them as tools, Science Alert reported.

The analysis was done on bones collected from Cueva de los Marmoles or Marmoles Cave in Southern Spain and was published in PLOS One.

Zita Laffranchi and her team found several signs that showed bones dating back thousands of years with post-mortem use, such as a skull that might have been used as a cup. Furthermore, other bones also showed some signs of being processed and marks that could have been used to remove the marrow or tissues.

The experts mentioned that the bones were from at least 12 different humans, out of which seven were adults.

Several other human remains have been found in the Marmoles Cave, but no detailed anthropological study has yet been performed.

The team undertook new radiocarbon, anthropological and taphonomic analyses of the altered bones to determine more information about the people back then.

The team collected these bones and determined that the cave was used as a "burial site" between the 5th and 2nd millennia BCE. They suggested that the cave was symbolic of the humans living in the area for a long time and was probably used for funerary traditions.

During an interview with PLOS One, the archaeologists said, "After comparing the finds from Marmoles with those from other, similar contexts, we can postulate that these manipulations were related to cultural ideas about death and the position of the dead in the community's ideological landscape."

"That is, the manipulation may have been motivated by a need to keep the remains of community members close, while at the same time 'facilitating' their passage to the spiritual worlds," they added.

It's impossible for archaeologists to determine what exactly happened to the dead bodies and what points they found as it is difficult to interpret the alterations on the bones.

The team also identified a tibial shaft and fibula fragments that were glossy and smooth and covered in small scratches suggesting that these bones could have been seen as tools having been processed, while the bones were fresh.

They are determined to continue studying the cave and other caves to find more evidence about the mysterious practices.

During an interview with PLOS One, the archaeologists said, "After comparing the finds from Marmoles with those from other, similar contexts, we can postulate that these manipulations were related to cultural ideas about death and the position of the dead in the community's ideological landscape." "That is, the manipulation may have been motivated by a need to keep the remains of community members close, while at the same time 'facilitating' their passage to the spiritual worlds," they added. The team also identified a tibial shaft and fibula fragments that were glossy and smooth and covered in small scratches suggesting that these bones could have been seen as tools having been processed, while the bones were fresh. They are determined to continue studying the cave and other caves to find more evidence about the mysterious practices. Shocking findings: Neolithic humans altered bones of deceased to make tools

Brucella canis, an incurable disease found in dogs, is spreading to humans in the United Kingdom.

As reported by The Telegraph, the disease that is without a cure and causes infertility in dogs was previously only observed in imported animals.

However, talking to the publication, Dr Christine Middlemiss, the Chief Veterinary Officer at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in Britain, has disclosed that evidence suggests that some dogs in the UK are contracting this infection.

Zoonotic implications

As per the report, while it is not yet considered endemic, the instances in which British dogs contracted Brucella canis have increased.

They were linked to specific circumstances, including mating with an imported dog, contact with a pregnant imported dog, or being the offspring of imported canines.

A report from the Human Animal Infection and Risk Surveillance Group, that is set to be published on Monday, will reportedly reveal that the risk to the public is very low, with breeders facing a low risk as well.

However, in spite of the low risk, the situation has drawn increasing attention, particularly as three people have contracted the disease from dogs this year. This has also led to the doubling of human tests conducted by the NHS.

Dr Middlemiss pointed out that the infection seemed to be spreading within kennels through breeding, and that the prevalence remained relatively low.

"There is not a lot – there is very little. But that is new for us."

Screening

Government scientists, as per The Telegraph, are reportedly gathering information to assess the feasibility of implementing a screening protocol at the border to prevent infected animals from entering the UK.

While, currently, there are no statutory requirements for import testing, Dr Middlemiss advises "that voluntary testing, pre-import testing, is a really sensible thing to do. If you're bringing dogs in to breed, then it would absolutely make sense to pre-import screen those dogs."

The report reportedly lists euthanasia as the only definitive method to halt onward transmission. However, the decision still lies with the dog owner, as a Brucella canis positive result is not a definite death sentence.
