<p>We have seen many pandemic success stories unravel this year and it’s not just countries but also corporates that have been negatively affected by it.</p>

<p>The latest victim to this pandemic is Netflix. Last year was an absolute bonus for them as people were stuck at home and couldn't go out for movies or concerts. So entertainment had to come home.</p>

<p>Therefore, Netflix was on a roll last year. Adding 15.8 million new customers in the first quarter of 2020, this momentum continued through the year.</p>

<p>However, 2021 is a whole new challenge. The world is emerging from the pandemic, cinema halls are reopening and entertainment has gone virtual.&nbsp;So, the world doesn't need a Netflix subscription to keep busy and the numbers reflect this.</p>

<p>However, every time Netflix faces a crisis, they have one go-to strategy — messing up regional content. However, it can be a one-way ticket out of the market and is essentially a gamble for Netflix.</p>

<p>Will companies that profited from the pandemic extend their dream run? Services such as Zoom video calls, food delivery apps, liquor companies and such had massive demands in 2020, but the pandemic year was an aberration and not the norm.</p>

<p>So, as and when we emerge from this pandemic, fortunes will reverse. When employees return to work, Zoom will feel the pinch. When the curfews are lifted, delivery apps will suffer.</p>

<p>Most of our consumption patterns will return to normal even if it's a new normal. This is will be a new challenge for these pandemic success stories.</p>

<p>Or does that even matter, as the company churns out worldwide hit shows, focusing on emerging markets and telling stories that embrace diverse viewpoints?</p>

<p>From Brazil to Argentina to India, original series like "The Queen's Gambit", "Cobra Kai" and "Money Heist" have earned fans -- especially with vast parts of the world trapped at home for months due to the coronavirus crisis.</p>

<p>With its series translated in dozens of languages, Netflix has managed several times over the past year to dominate the conversation on social media -- beyond "Tiger King," "Queen's Gambit" had the world playing chess and "Lupin" gave French actor Omar Sy a worldwide platform.</p>

<p>In a television universe that is more fragmented than ever, Netflix "has kind of incomparable cultural familiarity," once reserved for the big three networks ABC, NBC and CBS, says Gabriel Rossman, a sociology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.</p>

<p>For sure, shows like "Dallas" and "Friends" had global fan bases, but not in the immediate way that a Netflix show like period romance "Bridgerton" can build worldwide momentum.</p>

<p>"That allows the company to understand viewership patterns beyond the usual demographic factors," Punathambekar told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This does shape decisions about the kinds of series to commission or add to the library," he said.</p>

<p>"But at the end of the day, like any other media producer, Netflix cannot predict what will strike a chord."</p>

<p>That idea is clear when looking at Netflix's prestige movie offerings: despite three dozen or so nominations for Sunday's Oscars, for films including "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" and "Mank," none of them has had a major popular impact.</p>

<p>"We are seeing Netflix and other streaming video companies forge ties with established film and TV industries -- Bollywood, for instance -- and produce series that are rooted in specific cultural and political milieus," Punathambekar said.</p>

<p>Wiart said that while this allows the company to grow its brand worldwide, it also runs the risk of the "folklorization of its content" -- highlighting stereotypes of certain regions with a "strong Hollywood accent."</p>

<p>Surfers in the coastal Australian town of Byron Bay staged a "paddle out" protest on Tuesday as locals rally against a planned Netflix reality show some say could attract hordes of "vacuous" Instagram tourists to their beachside paradise.</p>

<p>Local media images showed dozens of people who formed a symbol for 'no' in the ocean to demonstrate their opposition to the Netflix original series 'Byron Baes', a pun on the informal term for "babe".</p>

<p>In a statement announcing the show on April 7, the streaming giant said the "docu-soap" would follow Instagrammers without the filter of social media, promising "fights, flings and heartbreak".</p>

<p>Netflix said the show was "our love letter to Byron Bay", saying the town was not just the backyard of Hollywood stars like Chris Hemsworth and Zac Efron but also "the playground of more celebrity-adjacent-adjacent influencers than you can poke a selfie-stick at".</p>

<p>But many residents of the popular tourist town, about eight hours north of Sydney,&nbsp;believe the series would be harmful to the local community, which is dealing with the fallout of its rapidly rising popularity.</p>

<p>An online petition calling on local councils not to grant filming permits to the producers in the "exploited paradise" has attracted almost 8,000 signatures, while some businesses are refusing to allow filming on their premises.</p>

Netflix said the show was "our love letter to Byron Bay", saying the town was not just the backyard of Hollywood stars like Chris Hemsworth and Zac Efron but also "the playground of more celebrity-adjacent-adjacent influencers than you can poke a selfie-stick at". But many residents of the popular tourist town, about eight hours north of Sydney, believe the series would be harmful to the local community, which is dealing with the fallout of its rapidly rising popularity. An online petition calling on local councils not to grant filming permits to the producers in the "exploited paradise" has attracted almost 8,000 signatures, while some businesses are refusing to allow filming on their premises. <p>According to Variety, the novel has been adapted for the screen numerous times, including the 2007 TV movie starring Sally Hawkins.</p>

<p>In the 2007 released British television film, Hawkins stars as the protagonist Anne Elliot, while Rupert Penry-Jones plays Frederick Wentworth.</p>

<p>Eight years prior to the film`s beginning, Anne was persuaded to reject Wentworth`s proposal of marriage. Now 27 and unmarried, Anne re-encounters Wentworth, who has made his fortune in the Napoleonic Wars and is looking for a wife--anyone but Anne, whom he has not forgiven for rejecting him all those years ago.</p>

<p>Shares of&nbsp;Netflix&nbsp;sunk 11&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;in after-hours trading to $489.28, wiping $25 billion off the company's market capitalization. Its stock has risen 27&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;over the past 12 months compared with a 63&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;increase in the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index.</p>

<p>Netflix&nbsp;said it did not believe competition changed materially in the quarter or impacted its new sign-ups "as the over-forecast was across all of our regions."</p>

<p>The company projected membership growth would accelerate in the second half of the year when it releases new seasons of "You," "Money Heist," and "The Witcher" and action movie "Red Notice," among other titles.</p>

<p>A year ago,&nbsp;Netflix&nbsp;added a record 15.8 million customers as the pandemic forced people around the world to stay home. The company said on Tuesday the pandemic hindered filming new shows.</p>

<p>"These dynamics are also contributing to a lighter content slate in the first half of 2021, and hence, we believe slower membership growth," the company said in its quarterly letter to shareholders.</p>

<p>Analysts project people will spend less time streaming from their living rooms as COVID-19 vaccinations spread and more people emerge from their homes.</p>

<p>Rival media companies have declared streaming their priority and are spending billions to compete with&nbsp;Netflix. Walt Disney Co's Disney+ crossed 100 million subscribers in March.&nbsp;Netflix's total streaming customers stood at 207.6 million at the end of March.</p>

<p>Netflix's share of new US&nbsp;subscribers fell to 8.5% during the quarter, down from 16.2&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;the same period a year ago, according to Kantar Media.</p>

<p>During the quarter,&nbsp;Netflix&nbsp;lost one of its most popular titles when workplace comedy "The Office" moved to Comcast Corp streaming service Peacock.</p>

<p>Netflix&nbsp;also raised its monthly rates in Britain, Germany, Argentina and Japan during the quarter.</p>

<p>New customers totaled 1.8 million in Europe, 1.36 million in Asia and 360,000 in Latin America.</p>

<p>"What wasn't expected was the strength of the slowdown in international markets, where competition is significantly lower," said eMarketer analyst Eric Haggstrom.</p>

<p>Excluding items, the company earned $3.75 per share in the first quarter, beating analyst estimates of $2.97 per share.</p>

<p>Revenue rose to $7.16 billion from $5.77 billion during the quarter, edging past estimates of $7.13 billion.</p>

<p>Net income rose to $1.71 billion, or $3.75 per share, from $709 million, or $1.57 per share, a year earlier.</p>

She was the spokesperson of the Osho movement in the 1980s and the secretary of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh.</p>

<p>Sharing the trailer, Karan wrote in the caption, "You`ve seen her, you`ve heard her and you`ve definitely heard about her. Now she`s here to tell you her own story. #SearchingforSheela streaming from 22nd April, only on Netflix."</p>

<p>The nearly two-minute-long trailer of `Searching for Sheela` opens with a clip of Osho saying, "People who don`t commit crime, don`t escape like that." It then moves on to feature glimpses of Sheela`s return to India after nearly three decades and her interactions with the media about how her life transformed after she was accused of fraud and murder.</p>

<p>She is shown speaking with journalists like Barkha Dutt, Faye D`souza, and even with Karan himself. Sheela can be seen explaining how she has bigger scandals in her life than showbiz people, to which Karan exclaims that they are all `kindergarten scandals` compared to her life.</p>

<p>Good news for Keanu Reeves fans worldwide as his comic ‘BRZRKR’ will now get a movie and web show treatment. Netflix has picked up the screen rights for the comic whose first issue hit shelves only two weeks ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The streamer is currently working on both a feature adaptation of the comic book as well as anime spinoff.&nbsp;</p>

Netflix has struck a deal in the region of USD30Mn for most worldwide rights to the film, Deadline reported a few days ago.<br />
