Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded a "successful and comprehensive" three-day visit to the United States, where he held productive bilateral and multilateral engagements, attended the Quad summit and addressed the UN General Assembly. In total, he participated in 20 meetings during his stay of 65 hours in the US, with additional four long meetings in flight, making it 24 meetings throughout the visit. For a normal person, it is quite a lot of work but PM Modi certainly has mastered the art of maintaining a high level of energy while keeping his extremely busy schedule. He always looks fresh despite staying awake for longer hours on international trips. IN PICS | PM Narendra Modi ends US visit with a powerful speech at UNGA, here's look back at his significant tour Although PM advocates the benefits of yoga and constantly promotes a healthy lifestyle, a curious mind will ask what's his secret to keeping jetlag away during foreign trips. Well, official sources said that one of his tricks is to pack his hours with back-to-back engagements so that it doesn't let the mind think much about any fatigue. "When he used to visit the US in the 1990s, an airline at that time used to give a monthly travel pass at heavily discounted rates. To make the most of it, Modi would always travel in the night as this ensured that he could visit most places while not having to spend a penny on hotels. His night would be invariably spent at the airport and in the plane," a source said. IN PICS | 157 artefacts that PM Modi is bringing to India on his way back from US trip × The sources said that PM Modi tunes his body and sleep cycle as per the time zone of the destination he is travelling to. Suppose, if it is night in India when he takes off, he may not sleep if it would be day in the country of destination. He follows the same process when returning to India. PM Modi also ensures drinking a lot of water as doctors suggest that the air in the plane sucks out moisture in the body, they added. (With inputs from agencies)

From pandemic to terrorism: Here are major highlights of PM Narendra Modi's UNGA speech

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday (September 25) and touched upon many important points including the Coronavirus pandemic, climate change, health, technology and terrorism.&nbsp;

Talking about terrorism, PM Modi targeted Pakistan without mentioning its name as he said that countries with "regressive thinking" that are using terrorism as a "political tool" need to understand that terrorism is an equally big threat for them.&nbsp;

He mentioned the current delicate situation of Afghanistan, saying that the world has to ensure that Afghanistan isn't used to "spread terrorism or launch terror attacks".&nbsp;

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Siddhant Sibbal, Indian Envoy to United Nations TS Tirumurti talked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s UNGA speech and India’s determination to bring reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

"And this a very clear message of India's support to the United Nations, and to multilateralism," the envoy said.

PM Modi talked about "representing mother of democracy," Tirumurti said. He also used his personal experience to showcase that "democracy can deliver and it has delivered. He has talked about his vision for governance which is to leave no one behind,"&nbsp;Tirumurti added.

In his UNGA speech, PM Modi emphasised that India — which represents one-sixth of humanity — has showcased immense developmental growth and that "will be the developmental journey for the rest of the country. If India grows, world grows and when India reforms, world transforms," the diplomat explained.

Tirumurti also&nbsp;touched upon PM Modi’s announcement about India resuming its vaccine export programme in a bid to help the other countries around the world. Highlighting that India has vowed to be present for global good as a provider and contributor, Tirumurti said that PM Modi’s announcement was widely appreciated with a huge round of applause and "several leaders thanked India in their statements for standing by them with our vaccine contribution".

He also highlighted that India is probably the only country in the G20 group which is on its course to achieve the Paris climate accord target.

PM Modi also underlined India’s continued commitment to combat climate change. "On the question of maritime security, he talked about oceans and the need to protect the resources of the ocean. I think why it is important is that we have just had on August 9, during our presidency of the Security Council, an event on maritime security. It was a high-level event, in which the PM himself was present. We had a presidential statement issued, which was probably first presidential statement issued on the holistic concept of maritime security, so in many ways it was extremely significant and therefore he underlined that, that it is an important concept and needs to be taken forward."

The envoy also revisited PM Modi’s comments on terrorism. "Terrorism has been a very important aspect which we have consistently underlined both in Security Council and outside. India took an active part in the global counter terrorism strategy and it was adopted 2 months ago, and many of the concerns we have and many of the vision which we had on combatting terrorism, was reflected in the document," he said.

United Nations Security Council

The envoy also talked about India not having a permanent seat at the UNSC. This time, after PM Modi met the US President Joe Biden, the US reiterated its support for India getting a permanent seat at the UNSC.

"President Biden also reiterated US support for India's permanent membership on a reformed UN Security Council and for other countries who are important champions of multilateral cooperation and aspire to permanent seats on the UN Security Council," a joint statement from the two countries read.

"Security Council is extremely important organ of the UN but unfortunately it is frozen in time. Over the last 75 years there has been no change,"&nbsp;the envoy said. "The world has changed, but UNSC has not changed."

He also said that the UNSC is becoming less credible as "when you are not representative of the change, you become less credible. So that is the real problem of the Security Council, it is becoming less and less credible to address the problems of the world".

India has called for reforms through the Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN)&nbsp;but the discussions have not reached any conclusion as of now, he said. "We are hoping in the 76th session we will get enough steam to make sure we give enough direction to this reform and we take it forward,"&nbsp;Tirumurti said.

Sneha Dubey

Talking about India adopting a tradition of giving young officers&nbsp;a right of reply, he said, "We would like these young officers to go on to the big stage and deliver a powerful message and gain confidence. This is our way of telling them, you go ahead, and perform and you should be noticed. It is important that they gain confidence from this as young diplomats. That is really why we encourage them to do that."

He also said that when some global leaders "misuse multilateral platform, they talk a very false and a very abusive narrative against India, and then having a young diplomat going and calling them out is also in my opinion very symbolic message to send."

Peacekeeping

The envoy defined India as one of the largest contributors of peacekeeping and pioneers.&nbsp;

"The first women peacekeeping contingent was from India and our women peacekeepers went to Liberia at that time. Also, we have had 174 martyrs, so we have played a huge role, we have given our blood for peacekeeping and that is why we felt that during our presidency, we should have, a high-level event which was chaired by external affairs minister himself in person," he said. "It was an extremely important event, and after more than 40 years, India for the first time tabled a resolution in the Security Council and it was against fighting impunity against the peacekeepers. It was extremely important, because the crime is only increasing against the peacekeepers. That was passed unanimously in the Security Council. We have put in money on unite aware technology platform. This is our way of telling the member states that India will walk the talk on peacekeeping."

He also reported that India has "donated 200,000 vaccines for all peacekeepers around the world, that was very widely welcomed. We upgraded two hospitals, one in Juba in South Sudan and another one in Goma in DRC Congo."

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Saturday said that a permanent seat, as well as reform of the UN Security Council, remains India's "top priority" as he addressed the press after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech during the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

Shringla reiterated India's bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, saying that under the General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid, there would be a "thrust to the inter-governmental process", moving forward&nbsp;towards text-based negotiations which are underway with an aim of&nbsp;"concrete outcomes in a fixed timeframe".&nbsp;

He also said that India will continue to work towards the reformed United Nations during its stint as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.&nbsp;

After Narendra Modi's impactful address at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday (September 25), India's Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla interacted with the press to brief Prime Minister's speech. In response to a question on rules-based order, which according to him was a recurring theme in Modi's diplomatic engagements in the US, Shringla said that Quad stands for the rules-based international order and a free, open, transparent, inclusive prosperous Indo-Pacific region, adding that it is "not directed" at any country in particular. ALSO READ | Pakistan as a country has supported and nurtured cross-border terrorism: Indian foreign secretary Harsh Shringla "And in that context, the right to freedom of navigation, use of global commons, international order is definitely there. This is a general sentiment, a general principle and not directed to any country in particular," Shringla said. "We believe in principles, we believe in values, and we believe that the Quad as a group must work with its Indo-Pacific partners, with ASEAN at its centrality, to achieve those objectives," he added. Ahead of the Quad summit, Shringla had said AUKUS had no links with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue and won't impact the functioning of the grouping. × Previously, the foreign secretary had said that Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison did mention AUKUS during his bilateral talks with PM Modi in Washington on Thursday. Morrison talked about the Australian side in seeking to initiate the AUKUS alliance. New security alliance between Australia, the UK and the US has no link with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue and will have no impact on the functioning of the grouping, foreign secretary Harsh Shringla said on Tuesday ahead of the first in-person Quad Summit. What is AUKUS? AUKUS is a trilateral security pact between Australia, UK and US, which was announced on September 15. As per the pact, the US and UK will help Australia develop nuclear-powered submarines, a development that has angered France over the cancellation of the submarine deal. What is Quad? Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) is an informal strategic forum comprised of four nations — the United States of America, India, Australia and Japan. Shringla had told a media briefing before of PM Modi's visit to the US: "Let me make it clear that the Quad and the AUKUS are not groupings of a similar nature." "The Quad is a plurilateral grouping of countries with a shared vision of their attributes and values and the four members have a shared vision of the Indo-Pacific as a free, open, transparent and inclusive region," he had said.

Narendra Modi vs Imran Khan: Looking at how UNGA speeches of Indian and Pak prime ministers differ

In the backdrop of WHO facing criticism over COVID-19 origins prorbe&nbsp;and the World Bank discontinuing its flagship Ease of Doing Business report following alleged irregularities, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday pointed to holes in the functioning of the United Nations, saying that the global body must rise up to the occasion and restore its credibility.

Addressing the 76th UN General Assembly, the prime minister, while quoting Indian diplomat Chanakya, said, “When the right action is not taken at the right time, then it is time itself that causes the action to fail.”

“If the United Nations wants to remain relevant. It will need to improve its effectiveness and enhance its reliability," he said.

The prime minister appeared to be referring to a report of independent scrutiny by leading US law firm WilmerHale which showed that China in 2017 manipulated its data to improve its ranking in the Ease of Doing Business index.

The UN’s health agency, World Health Organization, was also criticised for mishandling the COVID-19 outbreak --which first surfaced in China in December 2019-- due to Chinese interference..

The Prime Minister then highlighted India’s foundational values which are keeping the country’s democracy vibrant and intact.

“I represent a country which is proud to be known as the mother of democracy, that goes by thousand of years. On August 15, India entered its 75th year. Our diversity is the identity of a strong democracy,” he said.

“The strength of our democracy is demonstrated by the fact that a boy who used to assist his father at a tea-stall at a railway station is addressing the UN today for the fourth time as the Prime Minister,” he added.

“Yes, democracy can deliver. Yes, democracy has delivered. Today is the birth anniversary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, the proponent of 'Ekatma Manav Darshan', meaning integral humanism or the development journey taken together, the expansion from self to universe,” he said.

Stressing that the development should be inclusive, PM Modi said India is moving on the path of equitable development that seeks to nurture every citizen, irrespective of his social and economic standing.

“It is with the principle of ‘antyodaya’ — where no one is left behind&nbsp;— in mind that India today is moving forward on the path of integrated equitable development. Our priority is that development should be all-inclusive, all-pervasive, universal and one that nurtures all. Today, over 360 million people who earlier could not even imagine this could be possible now have insurance coverage as security, by giving over 500 million free health treatment in hospitals, India has given them access to quality health services,” he said.

“When India grows, the world grows. When India reforms, the world transforms,” he asserted.

He also pointed out that how innovation in science and technology is helping India to provide greater services to its people.

“Today, we are using drones to map over 600,000&nbsp;villages, we are giving people their digital records of their home and land. These digital records will not only reduce property disputes but also will increase access to credit and bank loans,” Modi added.

“The science and tech-based innovations taking place in India can make a big contribution to the world. the scalability of our tech and their cost-effectiveness are unparalleled,” he said.

Modi also spoke of India’s commitment to tackle climate change.

“Today India is moving forward with great speed towards its target of 450 Gigawatts of renewable energy. You will be happy to see the advances made by India to tackle climate change,” he said, adding, “we are in the process of building the world’s largest green hydrogen hub.”

PM Modi arrives in New York, will address UNGA today

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in person for the first time since the pandemic.

Talking about India’s successful democracy, the leader said "India is best example of diversity, power of democracy."

He used an example from his personal upbringing and said that the best example of India’s success in democracy is that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pm-modi-hails-strength-of-indian-democracy-says-child-of-a-tea-seller-is-addressing-un-for-fourth-time-415903">"a child of a tea seller is addressing UN for fourth time".</a>

Talking about providing equal opportunities to everyone as part of a successful democracy, the leader said that India is now moving towards integrated equitable development.

India has been able to provide free medical services to more than 500 million (50 crore) people of the country. The Modi administration is also working at making sure that every citizen of the country gets clean drinking water and has therefore been working on making piped water accessible for 170 million households.

"Polluted water is a very big problem, not just for India but for the entire world. In order to address this, we are carrying out a very big campaign to ensure that piped water clean water reaches over 170 million homes,"&nbsp;Modi said.

He also talked about people having proper property rights to their home and laid out Indian government’s plans to map nearly 600,000 villages across the country.

"People must have property rights to their home and land i.e. ownership records are must. In the most developed countries there are a large no of people who do not have property rights to their land and&nbsp;homes,"&nbsp;he said. "Today, we are using drones in India to map over 600,000 villages and by doing so we are giving people their digital records of their homes and land. When India grows, world grows: Modi addresses equal opportunities and successful democracy in his UNGA speech

US President Joe Biden has reiterated America's support for India's permanent membership on a reformed United Nations Security Council and its entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group during his first in-person bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House.

President Biden, in his talks with Prime Minister Modi, applauded India's "strong leadership"&nbsp;during its UN Security Council Presidency in August 2021, according to the US-India Joint Leaders' Statement issued after their meeting in the White House on Friday.

"In this context, President Biden also reiterated US support for India's permanent membership on a reformed UN Security Council and for other countries who are important champions of multilateral cooperation and aspire to permanent seats on the UN Security Council,"&nbsp;it said.

President Biden's support provides a big boost to New Delhi's push for the reform of the powerful UN organ as India has been at the forefront of efforts at the United Nations to push for an urgent long-pending reform of the Security Council, emphasising that it rightly deserves a place at the UN high table as a permanent member.

India in June asserted that the Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN) on UN Security Council reforms can no longer be used as a smokescreen, as the General Assembly decided to roll over the IGN work to the next UNGA session and agreed to include an amendment proposed by the G4 nations of Brazil, Germany, India and Japan.

At present, the UNSC comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the United States and these countries can veto any substantive resolution. There has been growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, President Biden also reaffirmed US support for India's entry to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the joint statement said.

The NSG is a 48-member grouping which regulates global nuclear commerce.

Ever since India applied for the membership of the NSG in May 2016, China has been insisting that only those countries which have signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) should be allowed to enter the organisation.

India and Pakistan are not signatories of the NPT. After India's application, Pakistan too has applied for the NSG membership in 2016.

China maintains that there would be no discussion on India's entry into the NSG before reaching a specific plan on non-NPT members' participation in the elite grouping, as it declined to give a timeline to reach a consensus among member states on this issue.

President Biden's support to India's permanent seat in the UNSC assumes significance as last month, State Department Spokesperson Ned Price told reporters at his daily news conference that the US values "working with India at the United Nations, including in the context this month of the Security Council."

Responding to a question on whether the Biden administration thinks that India should be a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Price said that the US supports building a consensus for a "modest" expansion of the Council for both permanent and non-permanent members, provided it does not diminish its effectiveness or its efficacy and does not alter or expand the veto.

"We believe that a reformed Security Council that is representative, that is effective, and that is relevant is in the best interest of the United States and all of the UN member states," Price had said.

In their talks on Friday, Prime Minister Modi and President Biden also welcomed the extension of the Statement of Guiding Principles on Triangular Cooperation for Global Development to leverage the combined capacities of India and the US to address global development challenges around the world, particularly in the Indo-Pacific and Africa, the statement said.

They renewed their close relationship and charted a new course to advance the partnership between the world's largest democracies They also affirmed a clear vision that will guide the US-India relationship forward, the statement added.&nbsp;

President Biden, in his talks with Prime Minister Modi, applauded India's "strong leadership" during its UN Security Council Presidency in August 2021, according to the US-India Joint Leaders' Statement issued after their meeting in the White House on Friday. "In this context, President Biden also reiterated US support for India's permanent membership on a reformed UN Security Council and for other countries who are important champions of multilateral cooperation and aspire to permanent seats on the UN Security Council," it said. Also read | Indian PM Narendra Modi set to address UNGA. Here's what you can expect India in June asserted that the Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN) on UN Security Council reforms can no longer be used as a smokescreen, as the General Assembly decided to roll over the IGN work to the next UNGA session and agreed to include an amendment proposed by the G4 nations of Brazil, Germany, India and Japan. At present, the UNSC comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Also read | Quad infra partnership independent of BRI, Indian foreign secretary tells Wion The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the United States and these countries can veto any substantive resolution. Watch Ever since India applied for the membership of the NSG in May 2016, China has been insisting that only those countries which have signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) should be allowed to enter the organisation. President Biden's support to India's permanent seat in the UNSC assumes significance as last month, State Department Spokesperson Ned Price told reporters at his daily news conference that the US values "working with India at the United Nations, including in the context this month of the Security Council." Responding to a question on whether the Biden administration thinks that India should be a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Price said that the US supports building a consensus for a "modest" expansion of the Council for both permanent and non-permanent members, provided it does not diminish its effectiveness or its efficacy and does not alter or expand the veto. They renewed their close relationship and charted a new course to advance the partnership between the world's largest democracies They also affirmed a clear vision that will guide the US-India relationship forward, the statement added.

Indian PM Modi, US President Joe Biden hold first in person meet in White House ahead of Quad leaders summit

Leaders of Quad countries —Australia, India, Japan and the US —would announce a new working group on space, a supply chain initiative and a 5G deployment and diversification effort apart from discussing issues like challenges in the Indo Pacific, climate change and COVID-19 pandemic during their historic meeting here on Friday, the White House has said.

At the invitation of President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterparts Scott Morrison from Australia and Yoshihide Suga from Japan have gathered in the American capital for the first-ever in-person Quad summit at the White House.

Quad leaders are also planning to roll out vaccine deliverables and announce a series of measures in the field of healthcare and infrastructure sector, officials here said.

"The leaders are hopeful for an opportunity in an intimate setting to sit down and talk about issues of mutual interest and concern. They'll have discussions on critical issues that are confronting the Indo Pacific; issues associated with climate change, with matters relating to COVID-19. They will also talk about how to advance infrastructure,"&nbsp;a senior administration official said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official noted that the Quad has been all about advancing areas of mutual interests.

"You will also see that the leaders are determined to pool our unique capabilities, our resources and our expertise to make common challenges,"&nbsp;the official said.

The White House official underscored that the Quad is an unofficial gathering.

"Although we have a number of working groups, and we are deepening cooperation on a very daily basis, it is also the case that it is not a regional security organisation. We are going to address particular issues associated with the challenges confronting the Indo Pacific in the current environment,"&nbsp;the official said, adding that that's what the leaders want to focus on.

India, the US and several other world powers have been talking about the need to ensure a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China's rising military manoeuvring in the region.

China claims nearly all of the disputed South China Sea, though Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam all claim parts of it. Beijing has built artificial islands and military installations in the South China Sea.

"President Biden believes that too often these kinds of discussions are scripted and he really wants to be able to sit down and have a deeper conversation with all leaders in an environment where they can really share perspectives on what's important to each of them as they go forward,"&nbsp;the official said.

"You have already seen evidence of, with very high level, bilateral engagements with security partners, other steps that we've taken and we believe that the Quad will be a key and critical format and forum for discussion and joint purpose as we head into a challenging period ahead,"&nbsp;the official said.

On the deliverables, the White House official said that the Quad leaders will be announcing a supply chain initiative.

"The effort is really a detailed joint initiative to map overall capacity, identify the respective vulnerabilities, and to take critical steps to bolster supply chain security, particularly for semiconductors and all their vital components,"&nbsp;the official said.

The goal is to ensure Quad partners take their steps to support a somewhat diverse and competitive market that produces secure critical technologies that are essential for digital economies globally.

"We're also going to announce a 5G deployment and diversification effort. This is to support the quite a critical role of Quad governments in fostering and promoting a diverse resilient secure intelligent telecommunications ecosystem,"&nbsp;said the senior administration official.

They would also announce a STEM -science, technology, engineering and mathematics - scholarship programme.

The Quad fellowship, the official said, is sponsored by private donors which will bring 100 students per year 25 from each quad country to pursue either a master's or doctoral degree at a leading STEM graduate university in the United States.

"That's a big deal for us and that's a signature initiative designed to indicate that we want and encourage Quad countries to send their best students to work with us and to build those lines of communication, coordination with young people,"&nbsp;the official said.

The Quad leaders, the official said, would be announcing new working groups on space.

"We will have an initiative on space. I think all four countries are determined to work on joint efforts. We are going to share information on illegal fishing and issues associated with maritime domain awareness. We are also taking steps to help monitor climate change and promote a variety of issues associated with estuaries and fishing more generally,? the official said.
Quad countries already have a robust cybersecurity effort underway and it is going to be enhanced at the leader level.

"We're going to try to take steps to bolster critical, critical inner infrastructure resilience against cyber threats, something that's plagued all four of our countries. We are advancing a very high-level group on specific capabilities and technologies,"&nbsp;the official said.

"We have got some specific steps that we're taking in the climate, green shipping network, and this has to do with how to decarbonise, what we call the shipping value chain. We are also taking specific steps to work with ports in each of our countries, to ensure that best practices are followed with respect to decarbonising efforts there as well,"&nbsp;said the official.

Responding to a question, the official underscored that Quad and AUKUS are two completely separate initiatives; they really have nothing to do with one another, even though there is some overlap with Australia.

AUKUS (Australia, the UK and the US) security partnership was unveiled last week by President Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Morrison.

"The Quad is a discussion and engagement effort around a number of practical matters like COVID and issues associated with climate change. There is not a military dimension to it or a security dimension to it. And it is an informal grouping,"&nbsp;the official said.

Earlier in June this year, PM Modi held a telephonic conversation with Harris and discussed the US' strategy for global vaccine sharing and the Quad vaccine initiative to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Harris' mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was born in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and immigrated to the United States as a teenager where she met Harris' father, Donald Harris, an immigrant from Jamaica.

Harris' maternal grandfather, PV Gopalan, had participated in the Indian independence movement and would later go on to become a senior civil servant in the country, at one point serving on an Indian diplomatic mission to Zambia.

Mukesh Aghi, President and Chief Executive Officer of the US-India Strategic Partnership, explained why the meeting between the two leaders is crucial.
