Sema is an army man, but his career in sports started in the year 2016 when he started taking shotput seriously. Before Paris 2024, he won the bronze medal in the shotput F-56/57 category event in the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.&nbsp;

Hokato Hotozhe Sema is an Indian Army Junior Commissioned (JCO) from Nagaland. He was born in the Niuland district and is employed as a havildar in the army with the 9 Assam Regiment.&nbsp;

In 2002, Sema lost his leg in a landmine blast during an operation at the Line of Control (LOC) in Jammu and Kashmir. After surviving the fatal accident, he started playing the shotput at the age of 32. He trained under his coach Rakesh Rawat.&nbsp;

Sema’s wife became his strength during the tough times and sacrificed even her food so that her husband could have “enough money” for the training, Sema said in one of the interviews after the Paris win.

"She has sacrificed a lot for me," he explained. "She has often starved, so that I could eat and continue training because we didn't have enough money to ensure two square meals a day.

As the voters in the world’s largest democracy headed to the polls, six districts in the Indian state of Nagaland, on Friday (Apr 19) reported zero per cent voter turnout following the election boycott called by the Eastern Nagaland People’s Front (ENPO).&nbsp;

<h2>Nagaland Lok Sabha Elections Phase 1</h2>

Nagaland, which has only one Lok Sabha seat, wrapped up its voting in the first and only phase. However, polling personnel in six eastern districts of Nagaland waited for nine hours in booths, but none of the over 400,000 voters they were expecting showed up.&nbsp;

The polling started at 7:00 am (local time) hours after a ‘public emergency’ declared by the ENPO which demanded a separate administration of Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) with more financial autonomy.&nbsp;

The ENPO is the apex body of the seven tribal organisations in the eastern region. A report by PTI citing officials said there was no movement of people or vehicles on major streets in eastern Nagaland.&nbsp;

The six districts in question have 400,632 out of the 13.2 million voters in the state.&nbsp;

Notably, a report by news agency PTI citing sources at the chief electoral officer’s office said the 20 MLAs of Nagaland also did not show up to vote in those nine hours.&nbsp;

<h2>No issue with the demand: CM</h2>

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, on Friday, said that the state government does not have a problem with the ENPO’s demand for FNT and has recommended an autonomous body so that the region gets sufficient economic packages.&nbsp;

Rio, speaking to reporters after casting his vote at his village in Touphema, said that he&nbsp;had accepted the draft working paper for FNT which was handed over to him in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The group has demanded&nbsp;separation after alleging that the successive governments did not bring about socio-economic development in the region.

<h2>‘Undue influence’</h2>

Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer Vayasan R issued a show cause notice to the ENPO, on Thursday (Apr 18) night after it called for boycotting the vote.&nbsp;

Under sub-section (1) of Section 171C of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), “Whoever voluntarily interferes or attempts to interfere with the free exercise of any electoral right commits the offence of undue influence at an election.”

“Given that the shutdown was a voluntary initiative by the people, there was no question of coercion or enforcement by the ENPO or any other authority,” it added.&nbsp;

The notice was issued on Thursday night hours before the election which imposed an indefinite total shutdown in the eastern part of the state.&nbsp;

In a terrible accident, two people died and three others were injured after a giant rock tumbled down a hill and smashed three cars on&nbsp;the Kohima-Dimapur National Highway in the northeast Indian state of Nagaland. The incident took place during a landslide amid heavy rains.&nbsp;

A video posted by news agency ANI shows the moment the rock rolled down and hit the cars in a 'blink-and-you-miss-it' manner. The&nbsp;dashboard cam footage showed the cars in a stationary position, stuck in a jam around 5 pm on Tuesday (July 4) when the boulder came out from nowhere and within seconds, flattened the cars.

The frighteningly quick nature of the accident&nbsp;offered&nbsp;no chance for the victims to react. The cars were turned into a heap of metal as if&nbsp;someone had folded a paper. Police informed that one person died on the spot while another succumbed to injuries undergoing treatment at the&nbsp;Referral Hospital. Three others were injured and receiving treatment.&nbsp;

The dashboard cam footage showed the cars in a stationary position, stuck in a jam around 5 pm on Tuesday (July 4) when the boulder came out from nowhere and within seconds, flattened the cars. The frighteningly quick nature of the accident offered no chance for the victims to react. The cars were turned into a heap of metal as if someone had folded a paper. Police informed that one person died on the spot while another succumbed to injuries undergoing treatment at the Referral Hospital. Three others were injured and receiving treatment. Hekani Jakhalu, a member of the&nbsp;Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, a regional political party in the Indian state of Nagaland&nbsp;(NDPP), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has won the Dimapur-III seat.

Jakhalu won the Dimapur III seat by defeating Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Azheto Zhimomi by 1,536 votes, as per PTI reports.&nbsp;

Out of the 183 candidates that ran in the Nagaland assembly elections, the lawyer and activist, 48, was one of four women.

The exit polls began hours later after Meghalaya and Nagaland finished their voting, earlier Monday while Tripura had finished polling on February 16. So far, the exit polls have suggested that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies will lead in two states while there will be a close race for Meghalaya.&nbsp;

All three states have 60 seats in their assembly where 31 seats are needed to secure the majority. The elections in Meghalaya and Nagaland took place across 59 constituencies in each of the two states, early Monday. However, one seat in Meghalaya was adjourned due to the death of a candidate while no poll was held for one seat in Nagaland as there was only one candidate.&nbsp;

According to recent data from the Election Commission, the turnout in both states was over 80 per cent with Meghalaya at 81.57 per cent and Nagaland at 85.90 per. Meanwhile, Tripura recorded nearly 87.6 per cent in the one-day assembly elections when it held the polls nearly two weeks ago. In Meghalaya, the polling took place across 3,419 stations and 2,291 in Nagaland.&nbsp;

The freebies included cash, alcohol, precious metals and even drugs worth at least $1.70 billion (Rs.169.6 crore). The EC also noted that there was no repolling needed at any of the 5,710 stations and thanked polling personnel for conducting the elections peacefully.&nbsp;

Exit polls for Meghalaya assembly elections

As per exit polls by Times Now-ETG Research, 29 seats were estimated for Others, followed by 22 for the National People’s Party (NPP), BJP with five, and Congress with three seats.&nbsp;

Zee News-Matrize estimates 24 seats will be secured by NPP, while 22 will be with Others, followed by approximately nine seats for BJP, and four for Congress.

India Today-Axis My India predicted that 23 seats will be secured by Others, followed by 21 seats by NPP while Congress and BJP will secure nine and six seats respectively.&nbsp;

The exit polls published by several agencies late Monday have led many to believe that the northeastern state will witness a hung assembly this year. This would not be the first time that has taken place in Meghalaya as in 2018 there was no single party or alliance which managed to secure a majority which led incumbent Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to form a coalition with United Democratic Party (UDP), BJP and others to form the state government.&nbsp;

This time around Sangma’s NPP has stood in second place in most polls and after the exit polls, the current CM once again hinted that if they fall short of the majority the party will form an alliance.&nbsp;

Exit polls for Tripura assembly elections&nbsp;

India Today-Axis My India predicted that BJP and its ally, Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) will manage to secure 40 seats, followed by TMP at 12 and 16 seats may be won by Left and its ally Congress.&nbsp;

Times Now-ETG estimated 24 seats for BJP and its ally, followed by 21 for Left and its ally, 14 for TMP, and one seat will be taken by Others.

According to Zee News-Matrize exit polls, BJP and ally can secure 31 seats, followed by Left and ally at 16, while 12 seats are predicted for TMP and one for Others.

Exit polls for Nagaland assembly elections

India Today-Axis My India predicted 43 seats for BJP and its ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), followed by Others at 10, five seats for Naga People’s Front (NPF), and one seat for Congress.

Times Now-ETG estimates at least 44 seats for BJP-NDPP followed by nine for Others, six for NPF, and none for Congress.

Zee News-Matrize predicts that BJP-NDPP will gain 39 seats, Others may secure 15, while three were estimated for NPF, and two for Congress.

As the exit polls indicate, BJP and its ally NDPP are poised to secure a comfortable majority, the former contested for 20 seats while the latter sent candidates for the rest of the 40 seats, as a part of their coalition.&nbsp;

However, exit polls are not always accurate and are often vastly different from the actual outcome. The EC will announce the result of the elections on March 2. Notably, this round of assembly elections is deemed important as these are the first of back-to-back elections across the country in different states. This will also be followed by six other state elections in 2023 leading up to the general elections, next year.&nbsp;

In a statement in Lok Sabha, Shah, while expressing regret, said the probe will be completed within a month and asserted that all agencies must ensure such happenings do not recur while taking action against insurgents.

He said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the matter.

He further said that the government is keeping a close watch on the evolving situation and necessary measures are being taken to ensure peace and tranquillity in the region.

The state authorities, as a precautionary measure, have imposed prohibitory orders in the affected areas, he informed the House.

Shah offered deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the case of mistaken identity on December 4 and subsequent episodes.

"The Government of India sincerely regrets this unfortunate incident in Nagaland and offers its deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives," the home minister said.

Narrating the sequence of events, Shah said the Army received information on the movement of insurgents in Nagaland's Mon and '21 Para Commando' unit laid an ambush.

A vehicle was signalled to stop but it tried to speed away. Suspecting the presence of insurgents in the vehicle, the security personnel opened fire, he said.

Six out of eight occupants of the vehicle died in the firing by security forces, Shah said, adding that later, it was found to be "a case of mistaken identity".

Two persons who sustained injuries were evacuated to the medical facilities by the Army personnel.

He said local people, on getting news of the firing, surrounded and attacked the troops and one soldier was killed in the violence while several others were injured.

Shah said that in self-defence and to disperse the crowd, the troops had to open fire in which seven more civilians were killed.

He said that on Sunday evening, an agitated crowd targeted Assam Rifles company operating base and forces had to open fire in which one civilian was killed.

It has been decided that all agencies must ensure such incidents do not happen in the future during action against insurgents, the minister said.

Indian govt says Nagaland firing incident case of ‘mistaken identity', expresses regret

At least 13 civilians were gunned down by security forces in Nagaland's Mon district, police said on Sunday, adding that it is investigating whether the incident was a case of mistaken identity.

One soldier also died in rioting which followed. The incident took place between Oting and Tiru villages when some daily-wage labourers were returning home in a pick-up van from a coal mine on Saturday evening, the police officer said.

The vehicle was allegedly fired upon by Army personnel, who were conducting an operation in the area after receiving inputs on the movement of militants of Yung Aung faction of proscribed outfit NSCN (K), he said. An angry mob soon surrounded army vehicles at the spot and in the ensuing melee a soldier died and at least three vehicles were torched.

Ordering a Court of Inquiry into the incident, Army said one of its personnel was killed and several others were seriously injured. It said that the incident and its aftermath is "deeply regretted" and the unfortunate loss of lives is being investigated at the highest level.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio promised a high-level probe into the incident and appealed to all sections of the society to maintain peace.

An investigation is underway to ascertain whether the incident was a case of mistaken identity, the officer said. Mon shares a porous international border with Myanmar, where the Yung Aung faction of NSCN (K) is based.

The situation is under control and police is conducting spot verification, he said.

"Based on credible intelligence of likely movement of insurgents, a specific operation was planned to be conducted in the area of Tiru, Mon District, Nagaland. The incident and its aftermath are deeply regretted. The cause of the unfortunate loss of lives is being investigated at the highest level and appropriate action will be taken as per the course of law," a statement issued by the headquarters of the Army's 3 Corps said.

"The security forces have suffered severe injuries in the incident including one soldier who succumbed to the injuries," it added.

"While expressing deep sorrow and sadness over the indiscriminate firing by Indian security force where more than 10 daily wage laborers from Oting village were blatantly killed, the ENPO vehemently condemn the barbaric act of the security force," a release issued the organisation said.

The ENPO asked the six tribes to hoist black flags in their respective Morungs at Hornbill Festival venue Naga Heritage Village in Kisama near the state capital against the incident.

"It has to be understood by all concerned that this order/move is not against the State Govt., but to show resentment against the security forces who have committed this heinous crime, and to show solidarity of the 6 tribes," it said.

In 2017, Khaplang died of a cardiac arrest at Taga in Myanmar’s Sagaing region under Naga self-administered zone. The group, which was later taken over by Khaplang’s relative Yung Aung, had split into different factions. The Niki-led NSCN (K) is one of them.&nbsp;
