England Test team captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out for three months owing to recurrence of a hamstring tear as confirmed by the England Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday (Dec 23).
Stokes, who was recently excluded from England’s white-ball series against India and the Champions Trophy 2025 squad is expected to return in May for the Test series against Zimbabwe.
The 33-year-old will also miss the upcoming SA20 season having limped off during the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.

Stokes has been struggling with a hamstring injury in the last few months and felt the recurrence of it during the New Zealand tour.

While Stokes sits out of the upcoming tours in the New Year, another veteran Joe Root has returned to the ODI set-up.
Root has not played for England since the 2023 ODI World Cup, however, with England pushing for another ICC trophy in white-ball cricket, Root’s inclusion comes as a big X-factor. He was part of the England side that won the 2019 ODI World Cup and played a key role for Eoin Morgan’s side.

<h2>Konstas to debut at MCG</h2>
With the Boxing Day Test set to start on Thursday (Dec 26), Australia have made wholesale changes to their Playing XI with NSW’s Konstas getting the nod ahead of McSweeney.
The former failed to make a mark in his three matches with the side in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, having scored only 72 runs in six innings.
On Friday, McSweeney’s exclusion was confirmed by the selectors as Konstas was drafted into the 13-man squad alongside Jhye Richardson.
At 19, Konstas remains an unfinished product as he looks to fill in the shoes of now-retired David Warner in the side.

The Israeli Army said on Telegram that the projectile was destroyed before crossing into Israeli airspace.

"Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago, a projectile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted prior to crossing into Israeli territory," said the army statement. 
"Rocket and missile sirens were sounded following the possibility of falling shrapnel from the interception," it added.
Emergency medical responders from Magen David Adom reported no injuries linked to the incident.

This comes amid heightened hostilities with Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who last week fired two missiles at Israel. One missile struck Tel Aviv, injuring 16 people in a direct hit on a commercial area. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has since vowed to retaliate decisively.
"I have instructed our forces to destroy the infrastructure of Houthis, because anyone who tries to harm us will be struck with full force, even if it takes time," Netanyahu told lawmakers on Monday.
<h2>Israel's retaliatory strikes</h2>
In a forceful retaliatory attack, Israeli airstrikes targeted Houthi-controlled ports and energy facilities, which the military claims are central to the rebels' operations.
The Houthis have reported that nine people were killed in the Israeli attacks.

Peskov also denied reports that Assad had been confined to Moscow and that his property assets had been frozen.

The reports claimed that Asma applied in a Russian court to shift to London as she holds dual citizenship of the UK and Syria. 
According to The Jerusalem Post, Asma had expressed discontent with her life in Moscow.

Born and raised in London Asma moved to Syria in 2000 and married Bashar Al-Assad the same year. She was 25 at the time.
In early December, the Syrian leader sought refuge in Russia after rebel forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, seized Damascus, ending Assad’s decades-long rule.

The probe centres on foundational semiconductors -- which go into everything from cars to medical devices -- and whether China's actions create burdens for US commerce, said the US Trade Representative's (USTR) office.
The fear is that Beijing's practices undermine "the competitiveness of American industry and workers, critical US supply chains, and US economic security," the USTR's office added.
Beijing slammed the move as "protectionist," vowing to defend its interests and urging Washington to halt its "wrong practices."
The investigation falls under Section 301 of the Trade Act, the same tool used during President-elect Donald Trump's first administration to justify tariff hikes on Chinese products.
"We have seen time and again, a pattern of harmful impact from nonmarket policies and practices across industries that the PRC has targeted for worldwide market dominance," said USTR Katherine Tai, referring to the People's Republic of China.
Previous instances included steel, aluminum, solar cells, electric vehicles, and now semiconductors, Tai told reporters on Sunday.
"This is enabling its companies to rapidly expand capacity and to offer artificially lower-priced chips that threaten to significantly harm and potentially eliminate fair, market-oriented competition," Tai added.

In a notice, USTR said China "nearly doubled its global share of foundational logic semiconductors production capacity" in just six years.
China's share is set to reach about half the world's capacity by 2029, based on announced new fabrication plants, and this expansion "is already discouraging investment by market-oriented actors," USTR added.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said an analysis of the US semiconductor supply chain found two-thirds of US products contain Chinese-made foundational chips.
"About half of companies didn't know whether they had Chinese chips in their products," she added.
In recent years, President Joe Biden has sought to shore up US chipmaking capabilities to reduce reliance on other countries. 
The latest probe will initially focus on China's foundational semiconductors production, including the extent these are used in other products like medical devices and vehicles.
The probe is also expected to consider whether Beijing's policies on inputs for semiconductor fabrication contribute to "burden or restriction on US commerce," the USTR's office said.
"This investigation is part of our broader strategy to strengthen the resilience of our supply chains and revitalize domestic manufacturing," said National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard.

Sweden's foreign minister said Monday that China had denied a request for prosecutors to conduct an investigation on a Chinese ship linked to two severed Baltic Sea cables despite Beijing pledging "cooperation" with regional authorities.
Sections of two telecom cables were cut on November 17 and 18 in Swedish territorial waters. Suspicions have been directed at the Yi Peng 3, which according to ship tracking sites had sailed over the cables around the time they were cut.
The Yi Peng 3 had been anchored in the international waters of the Kattegat Strait between Sweden and Denmark.
Ship tracking site Vesselfinder showed the Yi Peng 3 heading north out of the strait on Saturday.

Beijing on Monday confirmed the ship had left "to ensure the physical and mental well-being of the crew".
"The shipowner company, after a comprehensive evaluation and consultation with relevant parties, decided to resume operations," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.
"China has notified all relevant countries in advance," Mao said.
"China is willing to maintain communication and cooperation with the countries involved to advance the follow-up handling of the incident," she added.
<h2>Observers</h2>
However, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard also noted Monday that Swedish prosecutors had not been allowed to conduct an investigation.
"Swedish police have been on board as observers in connection with the Chinese investigation... At the same time, I note that China has not heeded our request for the prosecutor to conduct an investigation on board," Stenergard said in a statement to AFP.
On Thursday, authorities from Sweden, Germany, and Finland were invited aboard as observers for an investigation led by China.
A Danish representative also accompanied the group, as the country had served a "facilitating role" by hosting meetings between the countries earlier in the week, its Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen had said.
Prosecutor Henrik Soderman told AFP that no measures had been taken on board the ship as part of the Swedish judicial probe, including questioning crew members or technical investigations.
The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) also took part in the visit and were able to make observations and speak to crew members.

Soderman said that he was not yet aware of the details of the information gathered by the SHK.
<h2>'We have been clear with China'</h2>
"Our request that Swedish prosecutors, together with the police and others, be allowed to take certain investigative measures within the framework of the investigation on board remains. We have been clear with China on this," Stenergard said.
Late last month, Sweden requested China's cooperation in the investigation, but Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stressed that there was no "accusation" of any sort.
European officials have said they suspect sabotage linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The Kremlin has rejected the comments as "absurd" and "laughable".
Early on November 17, the Arelion cable running from the Swedish island of Gotland to Lithuania was damaged.
The next day, the C-Lion 1 submarine cable connecting Helsinki and the German port of Rostock was cut south of Sweden's Oland island, around 700 kilometres (435 miles) from Helsinki.
Tensions have mounted around the Baltic Sea since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In September 2022, a series of underwater blasts ruptured the Nord Stream pipelines that carried Russian gas to Europe, the cause of which has yet to be determined.
In October 2023, an undersea gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was shut down after it was damaged by the anchor of a Chinese cargo ship.

Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz was on Monday (Dec 23) found guilty by congressional ethics investigators to have paid numerous women, including a minor, for sex, and to have purchased and used illegal drugs, CBS News reported citing a final draft of an investigative report.
"The Committee determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favours or privileges, and obstruction of Congress," the report said.
CBS reported that the findings were part of a long-running probe by the House Ethics Committee into Gaetz, 42. The probe concluded that he violated multiple state laws related to sexual misconduct while in office.
<h2>Gaetz denies improper conduct</h2>
As Republican and upcoming US president Donald Trump emerged victorious in the November 5 presidential election, he announced plans to nominate Gaetz for attorney general.

CBS News reported that on Monday, the 42-year-old filed a lawsuit in federal court to block the release of the report (by the House Ethics Committee), saying that he was a private citizen and not subject to the jurisdiction of the committee.
Gaetz has denied any improper conduct and asserted the claims were a "smear" invented by his political enemies. 
<h2>A look at the report's crucial findings</h2>
CBS News reported that one of the findings of the investigative report included allegations of sex and drug-fuelled parties and travel, including a 2018 trip to the Bahamas where witnesses said he took ecstasy and had sex with four women.
"From 2017 to 2020, Representative Gaetz made tens of thousands of dollars in payments to women that the Committee determined were likely in connection with sexual activity and/or drug use," the report said.
Further, the ethics committee pointed out it received a testimony that during a party in 2017, Gaetz had sex with a minor aged 17 at that time. The minor was identified as "Victim A."

The committee said that Victim A recalled receiving $400 in cash from Gaetz during the party, which she understood to be payment for sex.
"Victim A said that she did not inform Representative Gaetz that she was under 18 at the time, nor did he ask her age," the report added.

Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal is no more. The veteran filmmaker died in Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 90 years old. The award-winning filmmaker was known for directing acclaimed movies such as Ankur, Nishant and Manthan. 
Benegal passed away at Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital due to chronic kidney disease, Pia Benegal told PTI.
"He passed away at 6.38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital Mumbai Central. He had been suffering from chronic kidney disease for several years but it had gotten very bad. That's the reason for his death," she said.
The saddening news comes a few days after he celebrated his 90th family on December 14.
Benegal is known as a true pioneer of the parallel cinema movement in the 1970s and 80s. In his career spanning decades, he has given films that addressed India's social system. 
For his thought-provoking storytelling, he went on to win several prestigious honours. His films like Mammo (1994), Sardari Begum (1996), and Zubeidaa (2001) were among the seven movies that had won the National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Hindi. 
For his immense contribution to cinema, he was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest award in the field of cinema; the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour of the country, and the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour. 
Born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad, Benegal comes from a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family. His father, Sridhar B Benegal was a photographer.  
The legendary director's last work was the biographical movie Mujib: The Making of a Nation. The film was about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman aka Bangabandhu, the founder of Bangladesh.
Soon after the news broke, condolences started pouring in from across the globe. Several celebrities and politicians have paid tribute to the legendary filmmaker.

Auldin Maxwell meticulously stacked 1,840 Jenga blocks on one block in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. The structure measured 43 inches high, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches deep, perfectly balanced over one small vertical block. 
Jenga is a classic block-stacking game, in which the players take turns to remove a block from the tower and place it over the top. The game is enjoyed by many across the world.

Although the structure sways at times, Auldin placed the blocks carefully with his steady hands, setting a new world record.
The video has gained over 323k views on Instagram with thousands of likes and almost a hundred comments of fans and followers on social media praising his achievement.

Miller also said that Ski patrolers entered the cabin of each gondola from above and lowered people’s equipment to the ground before using a rope equipped with a seat to lower each of the 174 passengers to the ground.
Workers were replacing the section of the lift that cracked Sunday as state regulators and the lift’s manufacturer worked with resort officials to investigate what caused the crack, she added.
Speaking to an American media outlet, the resort spokesperson said that the crack was part of the malfunction.

Addressing a press conference in Dhaka, Foreign Minister Tauhid Hossain said, "We have clearly informed India of our position. We have conveyed that we want her (Sheikh Hasina) back for judicial process."
"We have sent a note verbale to the Indian government," Foreign Minister Hossain added when he was asked about the procedure for requesting Hasina's repatriation.

<h2>Anti-govt protests that led to Hasina's ouster</h2>
Earlier this year, anti-government protests in Bangladesh against Sheikh Hasina's government led to her ouster.
The crisis precipitated in the country as students launched protests against the civil service job quotas in July. Students protested against public sector job quotas, which included a 30 per cent reservation for family members of fighters from the 1971 War of Independence from Pakistan.
The agitation was initially peaceful but soon turned violent. More than 240 people were killed in the clashes between student protesters and pro-government supporters. Thousands of people were injured, and scores were detained. 
Hasina resigned as PM on August 5 and fled to India. Following her ouster, an interim government was formed, which is being led by Muhammed Yunus. 
<h2>Growing demand to repatriate Hasina</h2>
A report by the Bangladeshi newspaper The Business Standard said on Monday that since Hasina fled to India, there has been a growing demand to get her repatriated to Bangladesh and face trial for the crimes committed by her administration during the July-August uprising.

Last month, interim leader Yunus said that his government would seek the repatriation of Hasina from India and assured that she would be prosecuted for all the crimes committed over the past 15 years.
<h2>Will Hasina face extradition?</h2>
Citing sources, The Business Standard report said that Hasina holds no other passport besides the now-revoked diplomatic one. 
Under the Indian visa policy, Bangladeshi citizens holding diplomatic or official passports are eligible for visa-free entry and can stay in the country (India) for up to 45 days.
However, Hasina has already spent four and a half months in India.
The cancellation of her diplomatic passport and its associated visa privileges could lead to the risk of extradition to Bangladesh, the report said.
It added that her extradition would fall under the legal framework of the 2013 extradition treaty between Dhaka and New Delhi, which was amended three years later. 
While the treaty allows for the refusal of extradition if the charges are political, it explicitly excludes crimes such as murder from being considered political.

The development was shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (Dec 23), three days prior to the fourth BGT Test which starts on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The news comes as a setback to India which are struggling in pace department as no pacer barring Jasprit Bumrah has been able to contain the Aussies - especially Travis Head.

Shami returned to the competitive cricket in November earlier this year in a domestic Ranji Trophy match for his state Bengal. Shami had gotten injured during the ICC ODI World Cup Final 2023 on November 19.
After playing the lone Ranji match, Shami also played nine games in domestic T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) as well. 
While Shami has completely recovered from this heel problem suffered in ODI WC Final 2023, his right knee is creating a bit of a problem.
"His left knee has exhibited minor swelling due to increased joint loading from his bowling workload. The swelling is on the expected lines, owing to the increased bowling after a prolonged period," read the BCCI statement.
"Based on the current medical assessment, the BCCI Medical Team has determined that his knee requires more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads. Consequently, he has not been deemed fit for consideration for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy," it further read.
It has been a miserable situation for Indian bowlers apart from Bumrah, who has taken series-leading 18 wickets so far. All the other Indian bowlers used in the series so far have 22 wickets collectively, with Mohammed Siraj taking 11 of them.
With no Mohammed Shami available, Bumrah has been waging the lone battle against Australia with two five-for and one four-for and an economy rate of 2.57 with a strike rate of 27.33.
The five-match series, however, stands equal at 1-1 with two matches still left.

“This court is prima facie satisfied that a strong case has been made out, and the conduct in question is part of a larger conspiracy, which can only be uncovered if the investigating agency is allowed to proceed unhindered. The steps taken by the petitioner were part of an organised effort to manipulate the system, and the investigation would be adversely affected if anticipatory bail were granted,” said Justice Singh.
In September, the central government discharged Khedkar from the Indian Administrative Services after allegations emerged that she had fabricated her identity to gain additional attempts in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Officials confirmed that her dismissal followed a formal enquiry into the allegations.
Khedkar is accused of providing false information in her 2022 UPSC Civil Services Examination application to claim reservation benefits. Both the Delhi Police and the UPSC opposed her plea for pre-arrest bail.

MatchMe is an invite-only application which ensures strict screening before adding anyone to the app. “Every applicant undergoes a screening process which includes a video call with both co-founders of the app. Here we ensure the network remains exclusive and has like minded individuals. Panama's president Jose Raul Mulino on Sunday dismissed recent threats made by US President-elect Donald Trump to retake control of the Panama Canal over complaints of "unfair" treatment of American ships.
"Every square metre of the Panama Canal and its adjacent areas belongs to Panama and will continue belonging to Panama," Mulino said in a video posted to X.
Mulino's public comments, though never mentioning Trump by name, come a day after the president-elect complained about the canal on his Truth Social platform.
"Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way. The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous," he said.

Trump also complained of China's growing influence around the canal, a worrying trend for American interests as US businesses depend on the channel to move goods between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
"It was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else," Trump said. "We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands!"
The Panama Canal, which was completed by the United States in 1914, was returned to the Central American country under a 1977 deal signed by Democratic president Jimmy Carter.
