Using state-of-the-art modern equipment and technology, archaeologists in Southern Mexico have unearthed an intricate structure of chambers and passageways, hidden beneath an ancient church, representing an 'entrance' to the underworld.

The labyrinth was discovered at the Mitla site, an important archaeological site related to the Zapotec culture, located in the state of Oaxaca. Zapotecs inhabited the region for over 2,200 years until the arrival of the Spanish in 1521.

The discovery was made possible by a joint venture between the Mexican National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Association for Archaeological Research and Exploration and the ARX Project.

To locate the underground structures precisely, the researchers used electrical resistivity tomography, ground-penetrating radar and seismic noise tomography as the three main scanning methods.

After obtaining the data and combing it, the team managed to produce a comprehensive map of what lay 5-8 metres (16-26 feet) below the church's surface. The Catholic building was built after missionaries arrived in the area and conceals the entrance to the now-mapped forbidden underground network.

Notably, the Zapotecs were firm believers in the underworld. They were polytheistic and believed in ritual, including when someone died.

Evidence of the hidden temple

According to experts, when the Zapotecs placed the buildings underneath, they would have been used as a religious temple, known as the Lyobaa - the 'place of rest'. The ruin was believed to be a portal to the realm of the deceased. It is suspected that the entrance to the underground passages may be located beneath the church’s main altar, which forced the church representatives to close it, in order to keep the 'satan' away.

The missionaries who built the church over it documented that they had indeed sealed the entrance to the Lyobaa.

“In 1674, Dominican father Francisco de Burgoa described the exploration of the Mitla ruins and their subterranean chambers by a group of Spanish missionaries. Burgoa’s account describes an expansive subterranean temple consisting of interconnected chambers, housing the tombs of high priests and kings of Teozapotlán," the ARX Project noted in a statement.

San Francisco has become a business hub for drug dealers from Honduras. The reason is the American city's sanctuary laws for illegal immigration. According to an investigative report by the San Francisco Chronicle on Monday (July 10), Honduran drug dealers say that San Francisco's accommodative approach to illegal immigration makes it appealing to sell drugs there.

Citing multiple drug dealers and court records, the report said that the majority of Honduran drug dealers in San Francisco are from the Siria Valley with many coming from the same families or having grown up together in the same small villages.

A dealer from the Siria Valley told the San Francisco Chronicle that he would watch as others returned to Honduras after selling drugs in the Bay Area. The dealer, who first arrived in San Francisco in 2004, said "They (the dealers) were popular because of the cars and money. So everybody wanted the same."

The money, the struggle to make a living

Some current and former drug dealers told the publication that they struggled to make a living. However, other dealers who have had successful business models, said they can make as much as $350,000 a year selling drugs or even more if they help run a local operation. And at least some of this money is sent to the valley's villages, fuelling a real estate boom.

Eighty-eight-year-old Ofelia Raudales Varela, a resident of the Siria Valley, said that while many of the migrants from the villages send remittances from legal construction work in San Francisco and Atlanta, they were not the ones building the mansions.

“There’s no other option for them to make a house in that way if it wasn’t for selling drugs in the United States,” Varela added.

The Mexico connection

While the migrants from Honduras are street dealers in San Francisco, the drugs they sell are Mexico- produced and controlled by the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel. The report said these drugs include fentanyl which has wreaked havoc not just in San Francisco but the entire US.

The report said that the cartels make fentanyl from chemicals purchased from China, transport it to stash houses in Oakland, and distribute it to Honduran dealers, some of whom ride BART into San Francisco, alongside commuters from Oakland to Civic Center Station, to sell it.

One Honduran migrant, who had been arrested multiple times, told the publication he understood the pain that drugs have caused San Francisco. A week back, his brother fatally overdosed in the American city.

The migrant, who is currently in a local jail, said, "I watch the news and I read the newspaper and everything, and I realize that it really is something very difficult. I went through it." The migrant said those selling drugs are merely pawns, adding, "We are, so to speak … some nobodies."

The problems in the crackdown

San Francisco, like many other American cities, shifted years ago to treating drug use more like a disease than a crime. Citing studies, the report said that the heavy policing approach of the War on Drugs era failed to slow dealers or decrease the demand for drugs while overcrowding prisons and disproportionately punishing people of colour.

On June 16, former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would add San Francisco to Operation Overdrive- a federal drug enforcement programme targeting cartels in communities that have the highest levels of drug-related violence and overdoses. And in the later days of the month, the San Francisco sheriff deployed an emergency team of 130 deputies in the Tenderloin, an open-air drug market for years.

However, research showed that low-level dealers are quickly replaced when policing escalates, and there is little effect on drug markets where strong demand still exists.

Nine dead in suspected arson attack in Mexican market

The body of a missing 59-year-old Mexican journalist was found in the country’s Nayarit with signs of violence, said the state public prosecutor’s office, on Saturday (July 8). This comes days after Mexican journalist Luis Martín Sanchez Iniguez was reported missing last week.

What do we know about the case so far?

Mexican journalist, Sanchez Iniguez, worked for the newspaper La Jornada and was said to be missing since Wednesday. However, it was not until Friday that his wife filed a missing persons report with Mexican authorities.

Sanchez Iniguez was found dead in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit, reported the La Jornada, on Saturday, adding that the discovery was made on the outskirts of the state capital, Tepic. However, it was not until later that the state public prosecutor’s office confirmed the identification of the body.

The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear. “The body was found with signs of violence, and two handwritten signs were found on it,” the prosecutor said in a statement. However, the content of the notes was not revealed.

Reports suggest that handwritten signs are frequently left by drug cartels with the bodies of victims. The motive for the suspected killing is still under investigation.

The officials also estimated the time of his death around 24 to 48 hours prior to the finding of his body. Sanchez Iniguez was reportedly last seen in the town of Xalisco, in Nayarit near Tepic, which has long been linked to the smuggling of drugs like heroin and opium.

How was the body discovered?

Sanchez Iniguez’s body was discovered when the police were in the midst of investigating two other potential crimes in the state against media workers. Another media worker was also reported missing in the Mexican state on July 4.

The Mexican media has identified him as Osiris Maldonado, who was also said to have previously worked with La Jornada. According to officials, the media worker was last seen when he left for work at a school the prior morning.

The recent incident also comes days after two masked men broke into the apartment of journalist Jonathan Lora Ramirez, who also lives in Xalisco, and forced him into a car, on July 7. It was later reported that Lora Ramirez has been found alive and “in a good state of health,” while officials are in the midst of investigating the crime of illegal detention.

Nayarit about cases of violence against media workers

Officials in the Mexican state of Nayarit said that they immediately opened investigations once the cases were reported and are following special protocols for journalists and human rights defenders.

The prosecutor’s office of Nayarit, in a statement also said, “In accordance with what is established provisions into the applicable protocols, it is necessary to take into consideration the activities of the victims who put them at a greater degree of vulnerability.”

Mexico and violence against media workers

Mexico has consistently ranked among the deadliest countries for media workers, according to press freedom groups. Last year, an annual report by the free speech group Article 19 found that 696 crimes were committed against Mexican media workers.

This amounted to nearly one attack against a journalist every 13 hours, said the report published in March 2023. “In Mexico, journalists are killed, but they are also intimidated and silenced systematically and recurrently through harassment, stigmatization, threats and the illegitimate use of public power,” the Article 19 report stated.

Mexico: Missing journalist’s body found with ‘signs of violence’

A shocking crime in Mexico has led to the arrest of a man known as the "Cannibal of Puebla."

The 32-year-old suspect, identified as Alvaro, allegedly killed his wife while under the influence of a prohibited substance.

He is accused of dismembering her body, consuming parts of her brain in tacos, and using her shattered skull as an ashtray, reported the Mirror.

The horrific incident occurred on June 29, and Alvaro was apprehended at their home in Puebla on July 2. Authorities claim that he committed the crime under the orders of Santa Muerte (Our Lady of Holy Death) and the devil.

The victim's grieving family has demanded justice, while investigations continue into this disturbing case.

According to reports, Alvaro confessed to murdering his wife, Maria Montserrat Animas Montiel, before dismembering her body and placing the remains in plastic bags.

Some of the body parts were allegedly thrown into a nearby ravine, while others were kept inside their home. Shockingly, Alvaro admitted to consuming parts of his wife's brain in tacos and using her shattered skull as an ashtray.

Two days after the crime, he reportedly called one of his stepdaughters to confess.

Mexico: Six killed in shooting in Monterrey industrial hub

Moving to Mexico, where record-breaking remittances have flooded the nation, fueled by a larger inflow of cash from abroad in honor of mother's day. Mexicans living abroad, mainly in the united states, sent a staggering $5.69 billion back home in may. This remarkable figure represents a significant 10.7% increase compared to the same period last year, surpassing both analyst predictions and previous records. The influx of cash was largely driven by the celebration of mother's day, as households honored the occasion by sending additional money to their loved ones in Mexico.

Mexico's remittances at all-time high

Mexico has experienced a historic surge in remittances as Mexicans living abroad, primarily in the United States, sent a staggering $5.69 billion back home in May, Bloomberg reported. This figure represents a remarkable 10.7 per cent increase compared to last year's period, surpassing analysts' expectations and setting new records.

The surge in remittances was driven mainly by the celebration of Mother's Day, with households sending additional money to their loved ones in Mexico. These remittances have provided a vital economic lifeline for many low-income families and have supported private consumption, contributing to Mexico's economic growth.

Unprecedented Inflows

Over the past 12 months, remittances to Mexico have reached an extraordinary cumulative flow of $60.8 billion, marking an all-time high. This influx of funds is projected to account for approximately 4 per cent of Mexico's gross domestic product this year. The robust remittance flows have significantly impacted the country's economy, especially among low-income families who rely on these transfers as their primary source of financial support.

Factors Driving the Surge

Several factors have contributed to the surge in remittances. Firstly, the appreciation of the Mexican peso against the U.S. dollar has incentivised Mexicans working abroad to send more money back home to compensate for the currency's strength. Additionally, the elevated inflation rate has diminished the purchasing power of the Mexican peso, prompting overseas workers to increase the amount of money they send to mitigate its impact. However, despite the record-breaking remittances, the purchasing power of these transfers has declined in recent months due to inflationary pressures.

Mother's Day Significance

Historically, the month of May sees a rise in remittance flows as Mexicans living abroad send additional funds to celebrate Mother's Day with their families. This year was no exception, with the occasion catalysing the remittance surge. Analysts estimate that approximately 10 per cent of the overall increase in transactions can be attributed to Mother's Day's effect, highlighting the occasion's cultural significance and the importance of family connections for Mexicans living abroad.

Future Outlook

Mexico may experience a moderation in remittance flows in the coming months. This potential slowdown is attributed to the expected deceleration of economic activity in the United States, where many Mexicans reside and work. Despite the uncertainty surrounding future remittance flows, the current record-breaking figures have supported Mexican households significantly and have played a crucial role in bolstering the economy.

Mexico: Armed group kidnaps 14 employees of staff security ministry in Chiapas

Ancient Mayan city discovered in Mexican jungle

Extreme heat in Mexico triggers drought, exposes submerged Quechula Church

In a remarkable spectacle, a stunning 16th-century Catholic church has emerged from the depths of the Nezahualcoyotl reservoir in Mexico, capturing the awe of locals as the region faces an intense drought. Known as the Temple of Santiago, this stone structure, typically visible partially during periods of low water levels, now stands fully exposed, presenting a challenge to the livelihoods of the nearby fishing community, reported the Daily Mail.

Constructed by a group of monks led by Friar Bartolome de la Casas, the Temple of Santiago found its place in the Quechula locality within the Chiapas region. Originally lost to the reservoir waters in 1966 during flooding, the church has resurfaced due to the drastic drop in water levels caused by the ongoing drought. With walls towering up to 30 feet, the structure spans an impressive 183 feet in length and 42 feet in width. Its bell tower reaches a height of 48 feet, proudly overlooking the grounds of the Temple of Quechula.

Despite spending years submerged, the ancient church has remarkably retained its intricate architectural features. Delicate arches gracefully stretch over the entrance, showcasing its detailed craftsmanship.

Aerial view of the Temple of Quechula church emerging from the Malpaso Dam after water levels dropped due to the drought in Nuevo Quechula, Chiapas. Picture credits: AFP

The handcrafted bricks and ornamental designs have stood the test of time, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the region. Architect Carlos Navarete, who collaborated with Mexican authorities on a report about the structure, revealed that the church was abandoned due to widespread plagues that ravaged the area between 1773 and 1776.

The Temple of Santiago was closely associated with the nearby Tecpatan monastery, established in 1564. Navarrete suggests that the church and the monastery share architectural similarities, indicating they may have been built by the same hands around the same time. Its strategic location on the King's Highway, a road constructed by Spanish conquistadors and in use until the 20th century, further elevated its significance in the past.

Exposed stone structure endangers fishing community

As the waters receded, exposing the church fully, visitors are thronging the site, now accessible by boat and by foot. However, the exposed church poses a grave threat to the local fishing community, as the Nezahualcoyotl Reservoir has dwindled to a mere 29 per cent of its capacity. The livelihoods of fishermen are at stake, with reduced water levels impacting their ability to sustain themselves and their families.

Local tilapia farmer Darinel Gutiérrez told AFP that the water began to drop too much about five months ago and has already gone beyond ordinary.

'What do I support my family with? Right now, I have nothing,' he said.

The resurfacing of the Temple of Santiago serves as a poignant reminder of Mexico's escalating drought crisis. In March, Mexico issued an alarm about the drought, attributing it to insufficient rainfall over several years, resulting in water scarcity. The country's vulnerability to droughts is amplified by the fact that 52 per cent of its territory falls within arid or semi-arid climates. Over the past decade, droughts have become more frequent, intense, and prolonged, exacerbating the challenges faced by communities dependent on water resources.

As locals marvel at the resurfaced church's architectural beauty, the sight also underscores the urgent need for sustainable water management and solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on vulnerable regions. While the Temple of Santiago has reemerged from its watery depths, the situation serves as a poignant metaphor for the ongoing struggle faced by communities grappling with water scarcity in an increasingly unpredictable world.

While the Temple of Santiago has reemerged from its watery depths, the situation serves as a poignant metaphor for the ongoing struggle faced by communities grappling with water scarcity in an increasingly unpredictable world.
Mexico’s foreign minister and Mexico City’s mayor resigned from their posts on Monday to focus on running for president in June 2024 elections. Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard resigned at noon and pledged to soon start a nationwide election campaign. Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum also announced her resignation within minutes in a bid to become the country’s first female president. She will officially leave her position on Friday.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s leftist National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party is expected to win the polls next year. The party will choose its presidential candidate following an arduous internal selection process, which involves a country-wide survey. Along with Claudia and Marcelo, two other contenders — Sen. Ricardo Monreal and Interior Secretary Adán López—are also in the fray. The results of the internal selection process will be declared on September 6.

It is speculated that Obrador’s departure may hurt Morena’s popularity among the Mexicans as the party was built totally around his personality.

Ebrard, now the former Foreign Minister of Mexico, stated on Monday that he intends to carry on with López Obrador's program, known as the "fourth transformation" of Mexico.
