Two armed attacks on Monday left at least 16 people dead, including around a dozen police officers, in regions of Mexico plagued by violence related to drug trafficking, authorities said.

In the southern state of Guerrero, unidentified attackers targeted a security patrol in the municipality of Coyuca de Benitez, prosecutor Alejandro Hernandez said.

According to preliminary information, 11 members of the municipal police force were killed, he said, adding that the motive for the massacre was being investigated.

A senior state security official was travelling in the convoy when it was attacked, authorities said, without confirming media reports that he was murdered along with police bodyguards.

Security forces were later seen patrolling the area — where several lifeless bodies lay on the ground — as a police helicopter flew overhead.

The second attack, in the neighbouring western state of Michoacan, left five people dead and two more injured, authorities said.

A group of gunmen attacked the brother of the mayor of the town of Tacambaro, according to the state prosecutor's office.

A restaurant worker and a member of the police force were among those killed, while the mayor's brother was wounded, it said.

Hurricane Lidia, which had transformed into an "extremely dangerous" Category-4 storm, made landfall on Mexico's Pacific coast and then moved inland. The storm poses a significant threat of flooding and mudslides, the US-based meteorologists said.

The US National Hurricane Center said Lidia’s eye—a region of mostly calm weather at the center of a tropical cyclone—appeared to have reached land near Las Penitas in the western state of Jalisco. The area is a sparsely populated peninsula.

When the tropical storm moved towards Mexico Mexico’s Pacific coast resort of Puerto Vallarta, its wind speed was about 140 mph (220 kph).

The hurricane then moved south of Puerto Vallarta to a point inland about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of the resort, and about 90 miles (150 kms) west of the capital of Jalisco state, Guadalajara.

Lidia remained a powerful hurricane even after moving over land, with winds of 105 mph (165 kph) late Tuesday.

According to the US weather agency, Lidia was moving east-northeast at about 17 mph (28 kph), and predicted that it could still be a Category 1 hurricane when it touches Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city, around midnight.

Lidia boasted maximum sustained winds of approximately 140 miles (220 kilometers) per hour, with the potential for further strengthening before it hits the land later on Tuesday (Oct 10), as reported by the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

It reached Category 4 status, the second-highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, as defined by the NHC.

Those injured were hospitalised, the statement added. Mexico's national immigration agency said that 55 foreigners were aboard the bus. Peruvians were also among the victims, it said.

Friday's accident is the latest crash involving US-bound migrants. Thousands of migrants from different countries have been travelling across Mexico in buses, trailers and atop freight trains in an attempt to reach the US-Mexican border.

Roof of church collapses in Mexico, claims lives of at least 10

Migrants, who were travelling atop the freight train, were stranded on Friday (Sep 29) in Mexico, after the train abruptly stopped miles from the US border.

The train was halted after dozens of northbound trains were suspended by the government over fears around migrant safety.

As reported by Reuters, hundreds of migrants were aboard a train which stood in a desert-like area near Villa Ahumada, around 123 km (76.43 miles) from the border town of Ciudad Juarez located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

"They're treating us like animals," stated Sasha Pacheco, who was onboard the stationary train, and was accompanied by her family including an infant.

Why would they take us if they're going to do this to us?," she quizzed, further stating that there were no options to get taxis or buses from their current spot.

Last week, 60 northbound cargo trains, run by Ferromex of Mexico, were halted after around half a dozen migrants faced injury or death. Later, the company said that the trains were restarted in some routes, where there was no known "heightened risk".

Some banners were hung on the side of the train halted in Villa Ahumada read, "Thank you Ferromex". These banners were put up by migrants who were initially grateful to the company for restarting the trains.

The spokesperson of Grupo Mexico, which is the owner of Ferromex, said that there were no additional updates to share about the trains still halted.

"Concentrations of migrants continue to be monitored, and trains are moved, ensuring continuity of traffic, but avoiding high risks for people and for operations," they stated.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan migrant Jose Julian, who was present in the border city of Piedras Negras which is opposite Eagle Pass, Texas, on Friday said that he was stranded in a similar way while travelling aboard the cargo trains.

He stated that he had climbed a freight train several days ago along with some 2,000 other migrants in Monterrey, however, the train stopped somewhere past Torreon.

Migrants stranded in Mexico after their cargo train abruptly stops miles from US border

A sharp increase in Venezuelan arrivals is contributing to a recent spike in migration along the US southern border.

A family picnic in Mexico was interrupted by a hungry bear after it swiftly approached their table and ate all their food at Chipinque Ecological Park.

A video of the incident that went viral on Tuesday (Sept 27) purportedly showed the black bear munching on their enchiladas, salsa, tacos and French fries, while a woman and her child sat silently, seemingly terrified of the animal’s presence.

The clip further goes on to show the woman shielding her kid’s face as they both sit perfectly still, while another person (unsuccessfully) tries to attract the bear's attention.

After finishing its meal, the animal sets off, apparently unaware of the fear it has caused.

According to AP news agency, the woman in the video is Silvia Macía who travelled to the park to celebrate her son Santiago’s 15th birthday, who has Down syndrome.

“Santiago is very afraid of animals, a cat or a dog, any animal scares him a lot,” she was quoted as saying.

In what seems to be straight out of a horror movie, Mexican authorities apprehended a sinister Chucky doll, not for playing games but for wielding a knife and allegedly demanding money from people.

Its owner, Carlos "N," employed the notorious "demon doll" to wield a genuine knife, sending shivers down the spines of unsuspecting locals.

The eerie incident unfolded in Monclova, a city located in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, on September 11. The owner has been arrested as well.

Reports suggest that Carlos was under the influence of an illicit substance when he decided to parade Chucky, a character made infamous in the 1988 horror film "Child's Play," through the city's main square.

The doll, with a real knife in hand, was used to frighten and disturb the peace of passersby and demand money from them.

Organised crime groups in Mexico have become the fifth-largest employer in the country, a shocking report has revealed.

According to a new study published in the journal Science, more than 175,000 people could be employed by Mexican cartels in total, with recruitment numbers going drastically up to make up for the losses caused by the incarceration of members or their deaths.

Researchers created a mathematical model using homicide, missing persons and incarceration data to track cartel recruitment, reported the Guardian.

The research aims to help the government devise a better strategy to tackle the cartel menace by understanding their recruitment patterns and operational designs.

Why recruitment numbers are up?

Over the last ten years, 37 per cent of the members employed by these Mexican cartels have either been killed or jailed by different countries.

This has driven the recruitment numbers up in Latin American nations, especially Mexico. A US Drug Enforcement Administration report in July claimed that the two largest cartels, Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation, employed more than 44,800 people.

However, the report revealed on Thursday that the numbers didn’t fully represent the gravity of the situation.

“The model only accounts for those directly involved in work that puts them at risk of violence, and not members—such as bankers—who help move and launder cartels’ money,” it stated.

Victoria Dittmar, a researcher for Insight Crime who did not take part in the study, told The Guardian that the numbers depend on the definition of a cartel and what constitutes membership.

“It can be very difficult to say who is a member of a criminal organisation and who isn’t,” Dittmar said, adding, “What about a politician that receives money? Or someone who cooperates with the group just once?”

How to tackle the cartel challenge?

The study explores different options that can be used to tackle these organised crimes while shedding light on starkly different approaches taken by Mexico and El Salvador.

The study stresses that young people should be given more opportunities and economic incentives to discourage them from joining the cartels, much like Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel Lopéz Obrador’s “hugs, not bullets” policy.

But this approach has failed to rein in the menace in Mexico.

On the other hand, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador has drastically reduced violence by doing precisely the opposite of what the paper prescribes: around 2 per cent of the country’s population has been jailed in a mass incarceration spree that has prompted accusations of systematic human rights violations.
