In a bizarre discovery, authorities in northern Mexico found 45 bags containing human remains on Thursday (June 1) while searching for seven young workers of a call centre who had gone missing a week ago. As per reports, the officials are still trying to determine how many bodies are there.

What do we know so far?

The 45 bags which contained dismembered bodies were found at a forest overlook located in the Mirador del Bosque, a suburb of the western Mexican city of Guadalajara, reported DW.

However, the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office, which issued the statement about the bags, said it was not immediately clear if the remains were those of the seven missing workers but said that they will continue the search.

The bags were recovered from a 40-metre-deep ravine in an area with difficult access, said the state prosecutors. According to a report by the Associated Press, firefighters and civil defence used a helicopter to recover remains from the gorge and will continue to inspect the site in the upcoming days.

The officials also said that they began investigating after they received a report of possible body parts in the area. The first bag of human remains was reportedly found on Tuesday which led to the discovery of dozens of them by the next day. Preliminary reports suggest that the remains are of both men and women.

The search is being coordinated by the police with the Zapopan city’s civil protection forces and firefighters who worked to extract the bags found from the ravine. A report by DW citing the prosecution said, forensic personnel were also present at the site to determine the number of possible victims and to try and identify them.

Missing people in Mexico

Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, is considered to be home to the powerful cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG). A report by the AP citing federal government data said there are more than 110,000 missing people in Mexico out of which 15,000 are in Jalisco, which has reported the highest number.

In December, local authorities found four human skulls inside a package at the Queretaro Intercontinental Airport in central Mexico, headed to the United States. The skulls were found wrapped in aluminium foil inside a cardboard box and sent from the western coastal state of Michoacan, which is said to be one of the most violent parts of the country and destined for an address in the US state of South Carolina.

Mexico: Authorities discover 45 bags with human remains in Guadalajara

Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar’s hippos are being flown to Jesus Maria in the mountains of northwestern Mexico, where another drug lord from Mexico Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and his sons live and where Ovidio "El Raton" Guzman was captured after a fierce firefight in January.

New York Post reported that 10 hippos will be flown from Antioquia, Colombia, to Sinaloa, the Mexican province. Upon landing, they will be taken to Jesús María, the bastion of Guzman.

Their new home will be Ostok Sanctuary — a shelter for animals rescued from species trafficking.

The Ostok Sanctuary is located on the outskirts of Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa — a stronghold of El Chapo who is currently serving a life sentence for murder and drug trafficking at the federal supermax prison in Colorado after his conviction in Brooklyn.

The whole operation of moving the hippos to a new location is being financed by Mexican conservationist Ernesto Zazueta who is shelling out $500,000, according to a report.

The hippos are a small fraction of the dozens in Antioquia, where Escobar is said to have maintained a zoo on his Hacienda Nápoles ranch at of his Medellin Cartel days in the 1980s.

He reportedly brought four hippos as part of a collection of exotic animals like elephants, giraffes, and antelopes at his private zoo.

However, after his death in 1993, these animals were left to roam freely in the marshy area of the Antioquia department.

Invasive species

As their population grew to 150, the hippos started polluting soil and water and wiping out native plants in the region.

The officials said that their faeces affected water oxygen levels, lowered the water quality and caused widespread fish fatalities. As a result, they were declared invasive species.

The environmental authorities have been helpless to curb their numbers.

According to a study in Nature journal, their numbers could increase to 1,500 in 20 years. The authorities have tried various methods like using contraceptive darts and other methods to control their population, but these have yielded limited success.

Though most of the other animals were relocated, the hippos were too difficult to transport. The chances of sending them back to Africa is also nil as the experts believe that it might risk upsetting the local ecosystem there.

Meanwhile, 60 of these hippos will be sent to India, CNN had reported.

Owing to a deadly fungal outbreak, the authorities in the US and Mexico have requested the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency of international concern. The request was conveyed after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) informed that two people who underwent surgeries involving epidural anaesthesia, died of meningitis.

Recruiters reportedly lured patients from multiple countries and 24 US states to two facilities named River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3 in Mexico for cosmetic operations that may have exposed them to the fungus. Both facilities have been shut down by the authorities.

The CDC is currently monitoring over 400 people who may have visited the facilitirs to avail the services. They have also requested others who had surgeries at either of the two facilities to get evaluated, even if they are currently asymptomatic.

"All have been notified, and are under evaluation, and we were working with transplant centers and other partners to properly manage these patients who had these organs transplanted into their bodies," CDC's Dallas Smith was quoted as saying by CBS.

US, Mexico request WHO to declare public health emergency over deadly fungal outbreak

Mexican authorities found 175 migrants crowded in a truck trailer in the southern state of Chiapas, news agency Reuters reported citing the National Migration Institute (INM). The migrants were mostly from Guatemala.

The incident emerges to be the latest mass human smuggling incident to be detected in the country.

In a statement, INM said that immigration agents heard yells and banging coming from inside the vehicle when it was stopped at a checkpoint in Chiapas.

INM said that despite the driver's refusal to open the truck's back door, migrants' faces could be seen via vents in the compartment.

The institution posted images of people standing close together inside the vehicle before descending one by one with the assistance of INM agents.

The report mentioned that most of the migrants were from Guatemala, with others from Ecuador, El Salvador and Honduras. One person was from the Dominican Republic and one was from Pakistan. There were 28 unaccompanied youngsters from Guatemala and two from El Salvador in the group.

Recent incident of truck-trailer fire in Tamaulipas

Earlier this month, local authorities said that a tractor-trailer and a van crashed on a highway in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, killing 26 people.

The Tamaulipas' public security ministry said that two vehicles crashed about half an hour outside of the state capital Ciudad Victoria and then caught on fire.

Authorities found the truck carrying the trailer was no longer at the scene when they arrived at the site of the crash.

A source at the Tamaulipas prosecutors' office said investigators were unsure whether the driver of the truck had fled or if he was also killed in the crash.

Reuters cited a source as saying that the passengers of the van, believed to be from a private transportation business, included children.

Massive migrant issue

Migrants escaping poverty and violence in Latin America frequently pay smugglers to sneak through Mexico on their way to the United States.

This year, more than 300 people were discovered in a tractor-trailer in the eastern state of Veracruz.

According to US Homeland Security official Blas Nunez-Neto, migrant interactions at the US-Mexico border have decreased by 70 per cent since the expiration of Covid-era border limitations known as Title 42 on May 11.

But despite that, Panamanian data shows the number of US-bound migrants crossing the dangerous jungle between Panama and Colombia has soared this year. It underlines the challenge the US faces as it seeks to curb surging migration.

Mexico's Popocatepetl, affectionately referred to as "El Popo", has recently intensified its fiery activity. It is one of the country's most active volcanoes.

As reported by news agency Reuters, a timelapse video showed ashes and smoke erupting from the volcano on Thursday (May 25).

The National Coordination of Civil Protection said on it Twitter account that the volcano maintains a continuous emission of water steam and gas with low ash content as of Thursday.

Several towns closed schools due to volcanic ash earlier this week and Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport had to halt operations for more than five hours on Saturday (May 20).

Low amplitude tremor was reported and smoke and ash reached a height between 400 and 600 m in a south-southeast direction.

The news agency reported that residents of nearby ash-covered towns Santiago Xalitzintla and San Nicolas de los Ranchos, in the state of Puebla, remain alert to volcanic activity.

As quoted, Rene Lopez Xoletl, an inhabitant of San Nicolas de los Ranchos, said, "People are afraid of those situations (release of materials or eruptions) but first of all, as we have been told, we have to be calm and alert."

What do we know about Popocatepetl?

The meaning of Popocatepetl is "Smoking Hill" in the native Aztec language Nahuatl, is one of the world's most closely monitored volcanoes. It rises just about 45 miles southeast of Mexico City and is home to approximately nine million people (over 22 million including the metropolitan region).

Juan Manuel Espíndola, a researcher at the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) states the latest burst of activity is not very different from others seen since it awoke from decades of slumber in 1994.

Espíndola said that similar occurrences occurred in Popocatepetl in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but the present phase could "go in a more dangerous direction".

Experts are constantly monitoring seismic activity around the volcano, as well as the composition of the materials and gasses it spews out, to try to predict a possible major eruption.

"Volcanoes have a somewhat capricious activity," Espindola said.

(With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Authorities in Mexico raised alarm for the Popocatepetl volcano, on Sunday, one step below the red alert, after it belched out smoke, ash and molten rock into the sky. Flight operations had to be halted due to the intense activity of the volcano.

The experts recommended raising the alarm to "yellow phase three".

Located on the borders of the central states of Morelos, Mexico, and Puebla, Popocatepetl is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world as approximately 25 million people live within its 100-kilometre (60-mile) radius.

As per the warning system developed by Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center, the yellow warning stands for "remain alert and prepare for a possible evacuation".

The yellow phase three, which was activated on Sunday, stands for "intermediate to high activity" and is activated when the volcano shows "explosions of increasing intensity, expelling incandescent fragments".

The alert increase also means an elevated risk of spewing magma and "significant explosions of increasing intensity that shoot fragments (of rock) over considerable distances," according to civil protection coordinator Laura Velazquez.

The next step, which is a red alert, sets off mandatory evacuations.

Popocatepetl volcanic eruption forces school closures

Mexican authorities cancelled classes for more than 100,000 students on Thursday in multiple towns congregated around the volcano.

According to officials, a series of powerful eruptions from Popocatepetl forced authorities o suspend both public and private school classes across 22 towns.

Images shared on social media showed people wearing masks in order to protect themselves from ash and gas.

Mount Etna erupts in Italy, forces airport to shutdown

Flight operations were halted in an Italian city after Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna, erupted, spewing ash across the runway.

The 3,330-metre (10,925 ft) high volcano, located on the eastern coast of Sicily near Catania city, began erupting Sunday morning, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) told The Associated Press.

The INGV noted that cloud cover and a rainy day impeded the views of the eruption, which "often serves up a spectacular display of flaming lava".

According to the institute, the volcano ash covered the Catania skies and at least one town on Mount Etna’s inhabited slopes. Local media has, so far, not reported any injuries or fatalities.

Several cars in Catania city were covered in a layer of dark gritty dust, images in Italian media showed.

Mount Etna is Europe’s most active volcano. The last major eruption was in 1992.

In 2021, it erupted for several weeks within the six-month period of activity. As a result, the volcano’s height increased by 100ft because of the amount of volcanic material it spewed. The southeastern crater is now the tallest part of the volcano.

The volcano is in an almost constant state of activity and it’s considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mexico shootout: 10 road racers killed, 9 injured at all-terrain vehicles’ racing show

Mexican security forces are searching for about 50 migrants who were kidnapped from a commercial bus, authorities said Wednesday.

The kidnapping took place in the central state of San Luis Potosi, the Attorney General's Office there said. The bus, whose two drivers were also missing, was discovered further north in the border state of Nuevo Leon on Tuesday, it added, without specifying when the incident took place.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador told a press conference the National Guard has been deployed to try to locate the migrants.

On Tuesday, Nuevo Leon's security agency tweeted that nine migrants - aged from 18 to 35 and from Honduras and Venezuela - had been rescued.

The San Luis Potosi Attorney General's Office said it was verifying whether the nine were part of the larger group that was kidnapped.

Fifty migrants kidnapped from Mexican bus

A chicken got loose on the tracks of Mexico City's subway system, causing service to be briefly suspended.

The city's Metro system released video on Monday showing the power shutting out at a station in the city's centre on Sunday.

The footage shows maintenance workers and civil defence officers in hard helmets pursuing the elusive bird around the tracks with brooms, gloves, and a garbage bag, reported the Associated Press.

The chicken evaded repeated efforts to trap it before one worker tossed his coat over it.

Mexico City's underground infrastructure has been afflicted by a number of accidents that city officials have said were sabotage. Earlier this year, a woman was detained but eventually freed when pieces of a plastic washing machine agitator fell on subway lines at another station. The event was later ruled to be an accident.

Accidents on the subway have been a constant source of embarrassment for Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, who is widely seen as the most probable candidate of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's Morena party to succeed him in the 2024 presidential election.

In May 2021, an elevated piece of the underground system collapsed, killing 26 people and wounding almost 100. An inquiry blamed faults in the line's design, and 10 previous officials have been charged with death, injury, and property damage, however none have been imprisoned.

Sheinbaum, like the president, frequently blames losses on a conservative plot against her.

Earlier last year, López Obrador directed 6,000 National Guard personnel to guard tube stations.

The emergency health order used during the pandemic at the US-Mexico border to quickly expel migrants back to Mexico or to their home countries has ended. VOA’s immigration correspondent Aline Barros reports on how the situation is unfolding along the South Texas border.

The US government is all set to lift a COVID era immigration policy known as Title 42 which has blocked migrants from certain countries caught at the US-Mexico border from seeking asylum since 2020. The new changes has raised confusion among prospective migrants at the border.

As the expiration of Trump-era immigration policy "Title 42" draws closer, President Joe Biden has conceded that the picture is not looking pleasant. Biden said the looming migrant surge will be 'chaotic for a while' and that he was not sure if the US is prepared for it. “We’ve gotten overwhelming cooperation from Mexico. We also are in the process of setting up offices in Colombia and other places where you could – or someone seeking asylum can go first. So, it remains to be seen. It’s going to be chaotic for a while,” Biden told reporters on Tuesday. The Democrat leader added that he spoke to Mexico's president for an hour and was receiving 'overwhelming cooperation' from there. “I spent close to an hour with the Mexican president today. We’re doing all we can. The answer is it remains to be seen." While Biden was candid in his assessment, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during the daily briefing said the administration was prepared to handle the situation. “We believe we have a robust process to deal with what is going to occur after Title 42 lifts,” she said. However, a similar sentiment was not echoed by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, who raised concerns about the preparedness. "We have not received an adequate response. We will continue to relentlessly pressure the federal government until we truly get the resources we need to manage the expected influx," said Hobbs. The travel restrictions, known as Title 42, were implemented by former president Donald Trump during his tenure in 2020. The order was passed after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it was needed to stem the spread of coronavirus. Consequently, the US authorities, using the provisions of the law, were able to expel migrants attempting to cross the border from Mexico, including those seeking humanitarian asylum. However, ever since the law was imposed, a section of pro-immigration voices, humanitarian groups, as well as Democrats, have argued that Trump used the pandemic as an excuse to deny thousands of people the opportunity to migrate to the USA and seek better life opportunities. Former Mexico goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal, the first footballer to play in five World Cups, has died at the age of 93, local media announced on Tuesday.

'Tota', as Carbajal was known, appeared in goal for Mexico at the World Cups in Brazil 1950, Switzerland 1954, Sweden 1958, Chile 1962 and England 1966, in which he made 11 caps for his country.

Carbajal held the record of playing in five World Cups for 32 years until 1998 when German midfielder Lothar Matthaus reached the mark.

Carbajal's compatriots Rafael Marquez and Andres Guardado, along with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have also since equalled his record.

Although Carbajal said he was scouted by Real Madrid between 1950 and 1954, the Mexican never left his domestic league and played most of his career in his hometown with Club Leon.

Record-breaking World Cup goalkeeper Carbajal dies aged 93

As the end of Title 42 looms, United States President Joe Biden’s administration and the Texas state government, as of Monday (May 8) have deployed thousands of security personnel to the country’s border with Mexico in a bid to prepare for a possible increase in illegal immigration.

This comes as Washington has moved to lift the controversial Title 42, on Thursday, implemented by former US president Donald Trump to deny entry to migrants, including asylum seekers, based on the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is happening on the US-Mexico border?

A report by news agency Reuters, citing sources, said hundreds of specialised investigative agents and air marshals from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were moved from their day-to-day duties to help with border management. However, the move has received some pushback from employees who argue they are being reassigned to menial tasks, the report added.

Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, on Monday, announced that members of the specially trained National Guard unit, who are called the Texas Tactical Border Force, will be deployed with Black Hawk helicopters. He added that some 10,000 personnel of the National Guard and security forces are to be deployed along the 2,000-kilometre border.

He also said that the personnel deployed will have access to aircraft, boats, night vision equipment and riot gear.

“They will be deployed to hot spots along the border to intercept to repel and to turn back migrants who are trying to enter Texas illegally,” said Abbott, while addressing a press conference.

Notably, the Texas governor, a Republican, has also criticised the Democratic president’s approach to border security. Separately, the Biden administration had also previously announced the deployment of 1,500 additional troops to help secure the US-Mexico border this week.

Some 180 US Air Marshals will also be pulled from their day-to-day duties of securing air travel to help at the border, said Sonya LaBosco, executive director of the Air Marshal National Council, who has also opposed the deployment, as per Reuters. La Bosco said that the air marshals will not perform law enforcement activities but rather deal with transportation, security and other tasks.

Title 42 and what is being expected?

The Title 42 order was signed by Trump back in 2020 which allowed US authorities to expel migrants to Mexico without the chance to seek US asylum. However, since the policy is now ending, it is expected to lead to a rise in border arrivals given the pent-up demand.

“We are dealing with a number of people never seen before who have crossed the border and this year we will set a new historic record,” said Abbott. This also comes as the US Customs and Border Protection’s most recent data shows that the number of processed crossings on the US southwestern border witnessed a rise of at least 25 per cent between February 2023 and March 2023.

Texas deploys thousands of security forces personnel along Mexico border ahead of Title 42 end

The president of Mexico claims that his nation has evidence of illegal shipments of the powerful opioid fentanyl coming from China.

According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a shipment containing the drug was detained in the Pacific port of Lázaro Cárdenas, reported the BBC.

He said, "We already have proof," and said he will seek the Chinese government to assist in preventing the shipments.

According to US authorities, fentanyl is currently the primary cause of drug overdose deaths in the US.

President López Obrador said in March that he had written to Chinese President Xi Jinping to ask for assistance in the war on drugs after being persWauaded to do so by US leaders.

On Friday, he announced to reporters that he will make the same request of Beijing: "In a very respectful manner, we are going to send this information to reiterate the request that they help us."

Rafael Ojeda, secretary of the Mexican navy, claimed that the packets covered in fuel resin and weighing 34–35kg (75 pounds) were found inside the container seized at Lázaro Cárdenas. These packages included evidence of methamphetamine and fentanyl. Prior to travelling to Mexico, the shipment left the Chinese city of Qingdao and travelled through Busan, South Korea.

Fentanyl is up to 50 times more potent than heroin. According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, fentanyl and other opioids were to blame for 67 per cent of the 107,375 drug overdose or poisoning deaths that occurred in the US in 2021. More American deaths have been connected to fentanyl.

The US government accuses Mexican drug gangs of providing fentanyl to consumers all around the country. Only one of the three "El Chapo" drug lord's sons who were accused of trafficking fentanyl in the US last month is now in detention. The other two are members of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel. In the US, their father Joaqun "El Chapo" Guzmán is incarcerated and serving a life sentence.

Fentanyl, according to President López Obrador, is not made in Mexico; rather, the drug cartels get it from suppliers in Asia.

There is no such thing as unlawful fentanyl trafficking between China and Mexico, according to Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, who declared this last month.

"China has not been notified by Mexico on the seizure of scheduled fentanyl precursors from China," she told the BBC.

Mao Ning said the fentanyl abuse in the US was a problem "completely 'made in USA'".

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms - Turkey sent Mexico a new search puppy on Wednesday after their rescue dog passed away while assisting the Mexican Army in finding survivors of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6.

Turkey sends puppy to Mexico after death of rescue dog in quake operation

The inspector-general of the US Federal Health and Human Services department, released a report on Thursday. It said the department often failed to perform required background checks on workers at emergency holding centers for migrant children who crossed the US-Mexico border in 2021. The I-G's report says, 200 workers did not have background checks for child abuse or neglect. Officials also found that 174 workers did not have FBI background checks. Further, checks against the justice department's sex offender registry were not performed on 42 workers. The report comes ahead of the expiration of title 42 on may 11.

Turkey on Wednesday gifted a new search puppy to Mexico after their rescue dog died while helping the Mexican Army locate survivors of the February 6 earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria.

The German Shepherd sent by Turkey is just three-month-old and he will now join the famous canine unit of Mexico which specialises in helping the army find survivors in countries that suffer natural disasters like earthquakes.

The furry puppy, who is black and beige in colour and has outsize paws and perky ears, has been given the name 'Arkadas' which means "friend" in the Turkish language based on online voting.

The trainer, who took care of rescue dog Proteo that died during a rescue mission in Turkey, will train Arkadas also, the army stated.

The rescue dogs were deployed by Mexico to Turkey after the nation was hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake near the southern border with Syria which led to the death of at least 54,000 people in both nations.

The remains of Proteo were sent back to Mexico, where an emotional ceremony was organised in his honour before he was buried. Earlier this year, Mexico had paid homage to the German Shepherd at a military funeral.

Mexico stated that the canine gift of Turkey showed that "humanitarian aid knows no limits or borders".

The ministry, on its Twitter account, also shared a link on which people could track the flight that the puppy boarded for Mexico City from Istanbul. After he arrived at the Mexico City airport, the Ministry of Defence's staff gave a warm welcome to the puppy.

The army welcomed the gifted rescue dog, Arkadas, in a formal ceremony organised at a military base in Mexico City on Wednesday.

The puppy was wearing a padded green harness which featured a tiny Mexican flag. The ceremony was joined by his new human and canine colleagues, who were standing in attention pose.

The puppy, who seemed excited during the ceremony, barked as the national anthem of Mexico blared out from the speakers.

"Thanks to my friends from Mexico who welcomed me with great affection, I promise to do my best to be a great search and rescue dog," tweeted the Mexican defence ministry on behalf of Arkadas.

The ministry, on its Facebook page, said that it was "waiting with open arms" for the puppy sent by Turkey, stating that it hoped Arkadas would follow the paw steps of Proteo.

Researchers have found the second-deepest blue hole in the world just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The underwater cavern, located in Chetumal Bay is said to be approximately 900 feet deep and 80 or so feet less than the world’s deepest known blue hole which was discovered nearly seven years ago in the South China Sea.

While the blue hole was discovered back in 2021, it was not until recently that it was studied and documented in the scientific journal Frontiers In Marine Science. The site dubbed, Taam ja’ which means “deep water” in Mayan, was surveyed and sampled by scuba divers, undersea sonar, and using various other methods.

What are blue holes?

According to LiveScience, blue holes are large, undersea vertical caves or sinkholes found in coastal regions. They are also typically home to a range of plant and marine life, including corals, sea turtles and sharks.

Blue holes form when seawater meets limestone. Since limestone is very porous, the water easily permeates the rock while the chemicals present in the water slowly eat the limestone away over time.

However, blue holes, due to a lack of proper means to access them remain largely insufficiently studied by scientists. In an email, a coastal geologist from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Christopher G. Smith told LiveScience, “They are largely poorly understood.”

The coastal geologist added that the unique seawater chemistry in blue holes suggests that they might interact with groundwater and possibly aquifers. Blue holes also contain very little oxygen, while sunlight only shines on their surface but despite these factors, they are home to various species that have adapted to the low-oxygen environment.

What do we know about the recent discovery?

Taam ja’, spans an area of 147,000 square feet and also has steep side slopes with a nearly 80-degree angle which form the “large conic structure,” noted the study. The mouth of the cavern sits around 15 feet below sea level. In 2021, scientists from El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (Ecosur), a public research centre coordinated by Mexico’s National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) first discovered the sinkhole.

The “origin and geological evolution of the TJBH (Taam ja’ Blue Hole) deserves further investigation,” researchers noted in the study.
