Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has finally gotten rid of the luxury presidential jet that he once called an 'insult' to the commoners of the country. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been sold to the government of Tajikistan. Lopez Obrador announced the sale late on Thursday night, saying the Central Asian nation bought the plane for $92 million. The sale finally draws curtains on a political saga where Obrador repeatedly used the plane to point out the excesses of his predecessors. “It’s important that everyone knows how people thought before, how the authorities acted, like little pharaohs,” Obrador was quoted as saying by Reuters. “Not any more. I would have felt shame, I say it sincerely, to use this plane,” he added. WATCH | Mexico's presidential aircraft sold to Tajikistan × Obrador, popularly known as Amlo stated that the proceeds from the sale will be used to build two hospitals in the poor and impoverished regions of the country. Last year, he announced that the jet will be made available to rent for birthdays, wedding parties and other celebrations to earn revenue. In September 2020, Lopez Obrador's government held a symbolic raffle aimed at raising funds roughly equivalent to the plane's value. Obrador's vow to sell the jet Obrador, a leftist crusader had vowed to get rid of the 'white elephant' during his 2018 election campaigning trail. At the time, he said even Donald Trump did not have a plane like that. After coming to power, Obrador made the selling of the jet a centrepiece of his austerity programme. However, for over three years, nobody came forward to buy it. Obrador's desperation could be gauged from the brochure he had drawn up to pitch the jet to prospective clients. “You, you biggest producers, your elite sales team, your most prized associates can now enjoy a reserved flight experience until now only available to heads of state,” the brochure read, adding the plane has “incomparable VIP capacity”. And indeed the jet had 'incomparable' facilities. Used by Obrador's predecessor Enrique Peña Nieto, the Dreamliner is customised with an executive bedroom, private bath and seating for 80 people. However, it was originally purchased for $218 million during former president Felipe Calderon's 2006-2012 term in office. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Mexico: Gunmen storm into resort, kill seven, including 7-year-old child

The United States Justice Department, on Friday (April 14), charged 28 members of Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel, which includes sons of infamous drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, with running a fentanyl trafficking operation, said Attorney General Merrick Garland. The indictments have also charged Chinese and Guatemalan citizens in response to what the officials have called one of the most ambitious crackdowns on the drug epidemic plaguing the US.

Who has been charged, sanctioned or arrested, so far?

Over two dozen members of the Sinaloa Cartel’s Chapitos network were charged out of which eight were arrested in Colombia, Greece, Guatemala and the US who were involved in trafficking what the country’s Drug Enforcement Administration chief Anne Milgram called the “greatest threat to Americans today.”

Additionally, the Chinese and Guatemalan citizens were charged with supplying precursor chemicals required to make fentanyl. Three of Guzman’s sons also known as the Chapitos, or little Chapos, Ovidio Guzmán López, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar and Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Sálazar were charged out of whom only Guzmán López is in the custody of Mexican officials.

US prosecutors have also charged four owners of Chinese chemical and pharmaceutical companies for allegedly providing the precursor chemicals to the cartel to create the illicit drug. This also comes after the US Treasury Department, on Friday, sanctioned China-based chemical companies Wuhan Shuokang Biological Technology Co Ltd and Suzhou Xiaoli Pharmatech Co Ltd.

“The PRC (People’s Republic of China) government must stop the unchecked flow of fentanyl precursor chemicals that are coming out of China,” said Garland.

What have the US officials said about the crackdown?

Garland alongside Milgram and other top federal prosecutors, in a press conference, unveiled three indictments aimed at hitting the cartel’s global network. During the announcement, the attorney general outlined some of the heinous violent crimes allegedly committed by the Sinaloa cartel like the torture of perceived enemies including Mexican law enforcement officials.

According to Garland, rival drug traffickers were fed to the Chapitos’ tigers dead or alive, one woman was injected repeatedly with fentanyl until she died, and other victims were tortured via electrocution and waterboarding. “The cases we are announcing today exemplify the comprehensive approach the Justice Department is taking to disrupt and hold accountable those who bear significant responsibility for this fentanyl epidemic,” said the attorney general.

Impact of Fentanyl on the US

“They know that they're poisoning and killing Americans. They just don't care because they make billions of dollars doing it,” said Milgram. She added, “Their greed is shocking and without bounds.” In 2021, a record number of nearly 107,000 Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses in the US.

A stone scoreboard, which is believed to be 1,000 years old and was used to play an ancient ritual ball game, was discovered at the famous Mayan Chichen Itza archaeological site which is located Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.

The circular object, which measures around 12.6in (32cm) in diameter and weighs 88lbs (40kg), has hieroglyphic writing inscribed around two players who can be seen standing next to a ball, as per the statement issued by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

“In this Mayan site, it is rare to find hieroglyphic writing, let alone a complete text,” said archaeologist Francisco Perez, who has been co-ordinating the investigations taking place in the Chichanchob complex, which is also called Casa Colorada.

Describing the image engraved on the stone, archaeologist Santiago Alberto Sobrino Fernandez said “The character on the left is wearing a feathered headdress and a sash that features a flower-shaped element, probably a water lily. In line with the face is a scroll, which may be interpreted as breath or voice.”

“The opposing player wears a headdress known as a ‘snake turban’, which has been seen represented numerous times at Chichen Itza. The individual wears protective clothing for playing pelota,” he added.

The players, who have been carved on the stone, have not been identified as the match's outcome also remains unknown, the inscription's future interpretation may reveal the game's nature as well as the final score.

The discovered stone, which looks like a scoreboard, dates between AD800 and AD900.

The ancient game, which was played using a heavy rubber ball, was a part of the Mesoamerican peoples' traditional practices and it is believed that the game had ritual undertones.

WATCH | Hot air balloon catches fire mid-air in Mexico; two dead, a child injured

At least 39 people have died and dozens been injured after a fire ripped through an immigration detention centre in a Mexican city near the United States border. Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the fire began during a protest by the migrants inside the facility.

Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday (March 24) responded to comments from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and denied that parts of Mexico were controlled by drug cartels.

Blinken said in a congressional hearing on Wednesday (March 22) that it was "fair to say" that parts of Mexico were controlled by cartels instead of the government.

"It’s false," Lopez Obrador said in a regular news conference. "There is no place in the country that does not have the presence of authorities."

Obrador's comments came after a US State Department report said that credible evidence of human rights abuses, government-led disappearances and torture existed in Mexico.

He appeared to take a softer tone against the United States on Friday, saying that Blinken, whom he called a good guy, was ‘just doing his job’.

Lopez Obrador has pointed to fentanyl being trafficked across the border by U.S. citizens, rather than undocumented migrants, and blamed the crisis in part on the deterioration of family values and lack of government support for families.

Mexico president refutes Blinken’s claims, says drug cartels don’t run the country

Gunmen ambushed a military unit in southwest Mexico on Friday (March 17), resulting in the killing of two soldiers and at least five suspected criminals, according to police. The shootout caused further casualties.

The altercation happened on Friday afternoon in the town of El Pescado, which is located in the state of Guerrero's mountainous region and is a frequent site of clashes between criminal groups.

A military unit "was the target of an attack by approximately 18 armed civilians aboard two vehicles," after which a shootout started, according to an army report, as per AFP.

Five gunmen and two soldiers were killed while two people sustained gunshot wounds.

The attackers were reportedly members of La Familia Michoacana, one of Mexico's most prominent drug cartels, that saw a significant decline in power with the detention of its leaders, according to local authorities.

The criminal organisation Los Tequileros is allegedly competing with La Familia Michoacana for dominance of the region where they conduct kidnapping, extortion, and drug trafficking.

Years of conflict between drug cartels fighting for control of the cultivation of marijuana and opium as well as drug trafficking have devastated Guerrero, one of Mexico's poorest states.

Mexico shootout: Seven die after gunmen ambush soldiers

Tens of thousands of people gathered on Saturday (March 18) for a large demonstration led by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico City's main plaza.

Many people who attended the event on Saturday agreed that it was in fact the official start of the 2024 elections that would decide the president's successor, even if it was called to commemorate Mexico's 1938 expropriation of the oil industry, reported the Associated Press.

López Obrador spent a part of his speech praising former American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who didn't actively oppose the 1938 oil expropriation despite the fact that many of the firms were American. This may have been done in recognition of recent tensions with the United States over U.S. overdose deaths from fentanyl smuggled in from Mexico.

“The best example of the authenticity of his ‘Good Neighbor’ policy was his respect for our nation’s sovereignty,” López Obrador said of Roosevelt.

López Obrador, who is renowned for his charismatic traditional style, may be leading one of the final rallies. Later this year, the Morena party will start the process of choosing a presidential nominee. The party's nominee is likely to take the stage next.

Nonetheless, most presidential candidates agree that few of them can equal the popularity of a president whose approval ratings are usually above 60%. Particularly so for the Morena party, which centred heavily on López Obrador.

Lázaro Cárdenas, a former president and one of López Obrador's heroes, won the hearts of Mexicans on March 18, 1938, when he expropriated the privately run, primarily foreign-owned oil industry.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Monday called his country safer than the United States, days after a group of Americans were kidnapped and two of them were killed.

"Why this paranoia?" said Lopez Obrador said when quizzed by reporters about the recommendation of the US government to avoid travelling to Mexico or exercise increased precaution while visiting the country.

"Mexico is safer than the United States and there's no problem to travel through Mexico safely," he stated. The comments came days after four US citizens were abducted on March 3, out of which two were killed, after they crossed the border and entered northeastern Mexico, apparently so that one person could undergo cosmetic surgery.

President Obrador calls Mexico safer than US despite recent kidnappings

The government authorities in Mexico arrested the five people who were suspected of being involved in the kidnapping of four US citizens, two of whom were killed, said officials on Friday.

The Tamaulipas state's prosecutor, where the crime took place, said on Twitter that they had executed a warrant for five people, charging them with kidnapping and homicide.

The five arrested are the same people who were left on a street with their hands tied by some alleged members of the Gulf Cartel, said a source in the prosecutor's office.

A statement was published by the local media, purportedly from the Gulf Cartel, on Thursday which stated that the group "apologises" for the incident.

It added that the group decided to hand over the perpetrators to authorities because the five people acted without getting any authorisation from their cartel bosses.

The four abductees had been taken away at gunpoint when they crossed the border and entered the crime-plagued Tamaulipas state on Friday. It was reported that one of the abductees had arrived 1to get cosmetic surgery.

The two survivors returned to the United States on Tuesday through the land border crossing, hours after the authorities rescued them.

The bodies of the two Americans killed were repatriated on Thursday, said authorities.

It was reported that one of the abductees had arrived 1to get cosmetic surgery. The two survivors returned to the United States on Tuesday through the land border crossing, hours after the authorities rescued them.
