Violence has gripped Mexico's Sinaloa after the security forces captured the drug cartel leader El Chapo's son. The arrest comes after three years of failed operation to detain him.

Violence engulfs in Mexico's Sinaloa, son of drug lord 'El Chapo' arrested

The Mexican government said on Friday that 29 people — 10 soldiers and 19 criminal suspects — were killed in the operation to arrest Ovidio Guzman, the son of jailed drug lord El Chapo, the former leader of the Sinaloa cartel. Speaking to reporters, Mexico's secretary of defence Luis Cresencio said, "Ten members of the military... unfortunately lost their lives in the line of duty."

Ovidio Guzman, 32, was caught on Thursday in the Culiacan city and flown to Mexico City on a military plane following six months of intelligence work to track him down, news agency AFP reported.

Guzman had allegedly helped to run El Chapo's operations since he was extradited to the United States in 2017.

The U.S. had put out a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to Ovidio Guzman's capture and accused him of being a key player in the Sinaloa cartel. The U.S. has sought his extradition for years.

Guzman's arrest triggered widespread violence in Mexico. His arrest comes ahead of a visit to Mexico by United States President Joe Biden.

However, this is not the first time that El Chapo's son was arrested. In October 2019, a bungled arrest of Guzman by authorities embarrassed the Mexican government and threw light on the challenges in cracking down on cartels, Reuters reported.

At that time, hundreds of cartel members overwhelmed security forces in Culiacan, with scenes of ensuing urban warfare. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador personally ordered Guzman's release to protect the civilian population.

The government has been waging a war against drug cartels for more than 10 years now. The cartels lead supplies of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and many other illicit drugs to the United States. However, the cartels have also established their operations in many European countries including Italy, Germany and France.

Apart from Sinaloa, some of the biggest cartels in Mexico include the Los Zetas, the Juárez Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Fifteen people are dead and 47 are being treated for their injuries after a bus carrying holiday season tourists flipped on a highway in Mexico's Pacific coast state of Nayarit, authorities said on Saturday. Officials in the nearby state of Guanajuato said all the passengers were from the same city, Leon, in that state. It is not unusual for friends, relatives or neighbours in Mexico to pool their money to rent a bus for beach vacations.

Prosecutors in Nayarit said the accident occurred on Friday, on a rural stretch of road. They said the dead included at least four children.

Local media said the travellers were returning from Guayabitos, a beach town north of Puerto Vallarta.

The causes of the crash were under investigation. Forty five of the injured were being treated at local hospitals, and there was no immediate information on the condition of the wounded.

In the past, such crashes have often been caused by poor maintenance of rental buses, bad weather or highway conditions, or speeding.

The US state of Arizona has agreed to dismantle the hideous-looking and rusting shipping container wall along the border with Mexico. The decision comes after the US government filed a lawsuit and argued that the makeshift wall was illegally built on federal land.

The US state of Arizona has agreed to dismantle the hideous-looking and rusting shipping container wall along the border with Mexico. The decision comes after the US government filed a lawsuit and argued that the makeshift wall was illegally built on federal land. According to court documents, outgoing Republican Governor Dough Ducey, responsible for erecting the containers, stretching almost seven miles along the border and costing the taxpayers $90 million agreed with the decision on Wednesday. “By 4 January 2023, to the extent feasible and so as not to cause damage to United States’ lands, properties and natural resources, Arizona will remove all previously installed shipping containers and associated equipment, materials, vehicles,” read the agreement. According to Ducey, the containers were placed to stem the flow of migrants crossing into the country. Earlier this year, he said the containers were a temporary fix and that his government was going ahead with its plans to close the gaps in the border. “Our border communities are being used as the entryway to the United States, overwhelming law enforcement, hospitals, nonprofits and residents. It’s our responsibility to protect our citizens and law enforcement from this unprecedented crisis,” added Ducey. WATCH | US-Mexico border faces its worst migrant crisis × However, with Democrat governor-elect Katie Hobbs set to take charge in January, the Biden administration has started making moves. The lawsuit was filed by the justice department on behalf of the Bureau of Reclamation, the department of agriculture and the Forest Services last week. Therein, the federal government requested the removal of containers in the San Rafael valley. “Officials from Reclamation and the Forest Service have notified Arizona that it is trespassing on federal lands. This action also seeks damages for Arizona’s trespasses, to compensate the United States for any actions it needs to take to undo Arizona’s actions and to remediate - to the extent possible - any injuries to the United States’ properties and interests," read the complaint. The influx of aliens to the US, especially from the neighbouring country of Mexico is something which both the Democrats and Republicans have failed to find a concrete solution for. While Republicans under former president Donald Trump were more concerned with building physical borders often echoing the pledge 'Build That Wall', the Biden administration is relatively lenient on migrants, allowing them to seep through the porous borders. Consequently, for the major part of this year, states such as Arizona and Texas sent undocumented migrants to Washington DC and Vice President Kamala Harris's residence via buses to send a message to the White House. Brother of Nemesio Oseguera, one of Mexico's most wanted cartel chiefs, was arrested by authorities on Tuesday morning (December 20). The arrest was made in the state of Jalisco, dealing a blow to the catel.

Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, brother of Nemesio, was captured in a town on the outskirts of Guadalajara in a joint operation with the army, national guard and other authorities, the armed forces said in a statement.

He was then taken to a detention centre.

Nemesio Oseguera is the head of the violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) group. He is arguably the most-wanted kingpin in all of Mexico. In 2018, a $10 million bounty was placed on his head by US authorities.

Also known as "El Mencho," he is one of the few long-term cartel leaders in Mexico to have evaded capture while leading the gang's continent-spanning empire.

Mexican authorities have accused Antonio Oseguera, Nemesio's brother, of being the "logistic operator" behind the cartel's activities. He has also been accused of money laundering and purchasing massive amounts of weapons. The US Tresury sanctioned Antonio in 2016 for his allege involvement with the cartel.

The CJNG is accused of smuggling massive quantities of drugs, increasingly including the synthetic opioid fentanyl, into the United States. More than 71,000 people died from synthetic opioid-related overdoses in 2021, according to U.S. data.

Nemesio Oseguera's wife was arrested last year for a slew of crimes related to the cartel. His daughter pleaded guilty in a US court to carrying out business transactions for the cartel in 2020.

Argentina will play Group C rivals Mexico on Saturday in an effort to bounce back from their disastrous opening encounter. Their World Cup dreams are already on the line. The Central American counterparts to the Albiceleste Mexico survived a scare to draw with Poland on Tuesday, while the Albiceleste began their pursuit of the third world championship by unexpectedly losing to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia that day broke Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten run. But thanks to its impressive record, Argentina is most pundits’ favourites for the final four at least.

On the other hand, Mexico's tournament got off to a relatively calm start on Tuesday with a 0-0 tie with Poland, one of several scoreless draws in the opening week of Qatar 2022. In some ways, Tata Martino's team was grateful for the single-point haul they received in the end.

Match predictions

Argentina was in shock following their loss to Saudi Arabia and cannot afford to drop points in their final two group games. The Albiceleste will need to support their captain in this match as Lionel Messi struggles with his fitness.
Despite having a strong team at their disposal, Mexico struggled in their opening match against Poland. On paper, Argentina is the superior team and has the advantage in this match.
Prediction: Argentia-2, Mexico-1

Predicted line-ups:

Argentina possible starting lineup:
E. Martinez; Montiel, Romero, Li. Martinez, Tagliafico; De Paul, Paredes, Fernandez; Messi, La. Martinez, Di Maria

Mexico possible starting lineup:

Match predictions Argentina was in shock following their loss to Saudi Arabia and cannot afford to drop points in their final two group games. The Albiceleste will need to support their captain in this match as Lionel Messi struggles with his fitness. Despite having a strong team at their disposal, Mexico struggled in their opening match against Poland. On paper, Argentina is the superior team and has the advantage in this match. A concerning outbreak of 61 meningitis cases in the state of Durango this month was associated with anaesthetic procedures carried out at local clinics, according to Mexico's Public Health Department. The meningitis outbreak has resulted in at least 12 deaths with another 12 in severe condition.

“This disease was not passed from person to person,” the department said in a statement. “This is a case where the infection was (spread) directly into the central nervous system through anesthetic procedures.”

The department cited contamination as the cause of the infections but added that it was still too soon to determine if the anaesthetic medication itself or the handling of it were to blame.

“It would be speculating to attribute the cases to the bottles used or stored or applied as anesthetics to patients,” said Assistant Health Secretary Hugo López-Gatell, adding investigations were underway.

Michniewicz was appointed as head coach earlier this year only. In 1974 and 1982, the Eagles finished third. However, there has been a drought to reach knockout rounds since the 1986 Mexico World Cup. Earlier, Poland had been eliminated in 2002, 2006, and 2018 group stages. A dog has helped authorities to find 53 bags of human remains found scattered around a clandestine graveyard in a Mexican region, which was once riddled with cartel gang violence.

In late October, residents of Irapuato town in Guanajuato state witnessed a dog carrying a human hand in its mouth.

Since then, an NGO group and forensic experts have been converging at the grave to exhume more bodies.

"While people from all over the world were celebrating the Cervantino festival, we were digging up bodies, and at the same time I thought it was useless because they were burying more people elsewhere," Mendoza, founder of a women's collective searching for missing persons, told AFP news agency.

The search comes in the wake of recent gang violence plaguing Guanajuato, an industrial hub home to factories of foreign auto giants. Around 300 victims of violence have been found dead in similar circumstances in recent months.

According to official data, people feel most unsafe in Irapuato among the Mexican municipalities.

Guanajuato, and its adjoining places, have seen a rise in cartel turf wars. From January to September this year, the region has witnessed more than 2,400 murders —almost 10 per cent of the national total.

Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has attained somewhat of a cult hero status when it comes to World Cups. With his frizzy hair and headband, it is impossible to miss the veteran who currently holds the record for the highest number of appearances as a goalkeeper for Mexico. Although on first look, his statistics may not reveal the impact he has had in the tournament but a quick search on YouTube and one will be flooded with videos of his amazing saves. With the FIFA World Cup 2022 just round the corner, it can be the last time that he will play in this competition and football fans from around the world will be expecting more heroics from the footballer nicknamed ‘Memo’.

Ochoa was handed his Mexico debut in 2005 against Hungary and although he was included in the 2006 World Cup squad, it was strictly as the third-choice keeper. However, in 2010, he went into the competition as a top performer for Mexican club Americas, but the result was same. He saw Mexico get eliminated from the group stages of the competition without playing a single minute.

First impressions

By the time Mexico reached Brazil for the 2014 edition of the tournament, there was no denying Ochoa as the first choice. Already a veteran with experiences in both the French and Spanish leagues, he started the campaign with a clean sheet against Cameroon, but his stardom will come against Brazil. Against an attack boasting on world class talents like Oscar and Neymar, he pulled off six saves – including a blinder against Fred – to earn a well-deserved point for his national team. Even the legendary Pele went on to compare him to England legend Gordon Banks for his saves.

The great run of form continued against Croatia as he quickly gained popularity due to his athletic saves and acute awareness. In the Round of 16, he once again faced the might of Netherlands and although Mexico lost due to a late penalty, Ochoa was a name that almost all football fans knew.

New year, same old Ochoa

What followed were a barrage of transfer rumours ranging from Chelsea to Arsenal. But he continued to play in the La Liga followed by a move to Belgian champions Standard Liege.

In 2018, Ochoa looked like he picked up just where he left in 2014. He pulled off an impressive 25 saves in just four games – the same as Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois but in fewer matches. In a group consisting of heavyweights like Germany and South Korea, he proved to be difference maker and before ultimately losing to Brazil, Ochoa looked almost invincible between the posts.

Farewell with a hint of controversy

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup, Ochoa actually found himself in a bit of a controversy. Kavak, a company where the veteran goalkeeper holds a huge number of shares, is also sponsoring the Argentina football team and that has not gone down well with some experts and also fans.

However, all that is in the past. Mexico once again has a tough challenge in front of them with Argentina and Poland featuring in their group. In that case, keeping a clean sheet will be nothing short of gold dust for El Tri and if fans will once again be expecting magic from Guillermo Ochoa.

Also read | England and Wales set to defy FIFA with 'OneLove' rainbow armbands Ochoa was handed his Mexico debut in 2005 against Hungary and although he was included in the 2006 World Cup squad, it was strictly as the third-choice keeper. However, in 2010, he went into the competition as a top performer for Mexican club Americas, but the result was same. He saw Mexico get eliminated from the group stages of the competition without playing a single minute. First impressions By the time Mexico reached Brazil for the 2014 edition of the tournament, there was no denying Ochoa as the first choice. New year, same old Ochoa What followed were a barrage of transfer rumours ranging from Chelsea to Arsenal. But he continued to play in the La Liga followed by a move to Belgian champions Standard Liege. Farewell with a hint of controversy Ahead of the 2022 World Cup, Ochoa actually found himself in a bit of a controversy.

FIFA World Cup 2022: The enigma called Guillermo Ochoa

In Hollywood, he's the rising star of the sequel to 'Black Panther', the first major Black superhero movie. In his homeland Mexico, Tenoch Huerta is leading a fight against racism on the screen. The 41-year-old aims to use his growing fame to break the tradition of Mexican actors of Indigenous origin being cast in the roles of thieves and villains.

Playing the character of Namor the Sub-Mariner in Marvel Studios' 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever', Huerta joins a small club of international Mexican stars such as Salma Hayek, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.

The path to Hollywood was strewn with pitfalls for Huerta, who hails from a working-class suburb of Mexico City.

"Like thousands of dark-skinned people, I've been called names" such as "dirty Indian," he wrote in his new book "Orgullo Prieto" (Brown Pride).

"Mexico is a country that's racist and denies it," he added.

Huerta said it is a myth that Mexico today is a mixed-race country where skin colour is unimportant.

"This is how we deny the cultural and linguistic diversity of all Indigenous nations, Afro-descendant communities, Asians," he wrote.

Huerta, who also played infamous drug trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero in the Netflix hit 'Narcos: Mexico', criticized the way of thinking "that places white, modern, Western, on a higher level."

- 'Racist narratives' -

Even before "Black Panther," Huerta was the figurehead of "Poder Prieto" (Brown Power), a collective of actresses and actors who feel discriminated against because of their origin and their skin colour.

"We're only given characters of delinquents, domestic workers, or the poor," said Christel Klitbo, 40, who is of Danish, African and Lebanese descent.

Aware of the powerful influence of the media, Huerta said he and the other group members see a "compelling need to change racist narratives and practices, which have been normalized, reproduced and perpetuated in the audiovisual industry."

Huerta hopes that his appearance in 'Black Panther' -- which also stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, who was born in Mexico to Kenyan parents -- will help their struggle.

"The perception changes if we have these dark-skinned actors, of clearly Indigenous descent, in positions of power and influence, who are kings and great warriors," he said.

Huerta also wants to see changes in wider Mexican customs, such as the popular saying still heard in some homes that daughters should marry a white man to "improve the race."

While he is in favour of laws against racism, Huerta avoids commenting on the policies of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's party, which has pledged to "restore the dignity" of Indigenous peoples.

"I believe that the demands of the Indigenous peoples have not been met. But this is a subject that does not concern me because I am not Indigenous," he said Friday at his book launch.

"As a simple external observer, I believe that we could do more and better," he added.

Mexico is home to 23.2 million people over the age of three who identify as Indigenous, representing 19.4 per cent of the population, according to the national statistics agency INEGI.

Around one in five Mexican adults said they had experienced discrimination over the past year, mainly because of their skin colour, in the first national survey on the subject in 2O17.

And three-quarters of Indigenous people felt undervalued by Mexican society.

"We are a new link in a chain that dates back 500 years. All the struggles have been the same for 500 years," Huerta concluded, referring to the Spanish conquest and fall of the Aztec empire in 1521.

Mexico's 'Black Panther' star fights racism at home

Clothing designers inspired by traditional Mexican motifs, embroidery and colours are exhibiting their work at a fashion fair in Mexico City promoted by the government to support marginalised indigenous communities.

Traditional blouses made by the Tzotzil people of Chiapas, embroidered patterns from Michoacan and shirts from Oaxaca were among the garments on show at the first of seven parades at the "Original" event.

"The creation of each product made in our community is a legacy of our ancestors," said Carlos Alberto Delgado Martinez, one of around 500 exhibitors at the event, which runs until Sunday at the Los Pinos former presidential residence.

"It's important that we artisans save our culture and defend it from plagiarism because each garment has a meaning. Each embroidery has an explanation," he added.

As with the first edition in 2021, "Original" aims to fight what Mexico calls plagiarism of indigenous textiles by foreign clothing brands, and to create a more equitable fashion industry.

"We're not opposed to (the big fashion houses) using motifs of pre-Hispanic origin" as long as they recognise "the intellectual work and creativity" of Mexican artisans, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Friday.

"The government is pursuing a policy of rehabilitating the dignity of indigenous peoples," Lopez Obrador's spokesman Jesus Ramirez Cuevas told AFP.

"Mexico would not be what it is without its indigenous peoples," he said, underlining the government's social programmes for impoverished such communities.

"It's time for them to play a central role in the construction of the (country's) identity. Today, we recognise their art," he added.

Mexico has lodged several complaints against major clothing brands including Zara, Mango and SHEIN for alleged cultural appropriation.

Last month it won an apology from US fashion house Ralph Lauren after Lopez Obrador's wife Beatriz Gutierrez accused it of plagiarising indigenous designs.

French designer Isabel Marant also apologised in 2020 for the use of the traditional patterns from an indigenous community.

Mexico's culture ministry has called for "ethical collaboration" between clothing brands and artisans.

"No to plagiarism. No to cultural appropriation. Yes to original creations and the communities behind them," Culture Minister Alejandra Frausto said.

The government is also trying to retrieve pre-Hispanic archaeological pieces from abroad and stop foreign auctions of such items that Lopez Obrador has branded "immoral."

"You want to buy Mexican art? Buy this one, which is alive," Frausto said, pointing to models dressed in blouses, shirts and belts made by indigenous artisans.

Thousands protest in Mexico against electoral reform proposal

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated Sunday in Mexico City to denounce a proposed reform which they insist will undermine the independent body which organizes the country's elections.

Protesters chanted "Hands off INE," or National Electoral Institute, as they made their way along Paseo de Reforma in the city center to oppose the change championed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

"We are gathered here with one clear and important goal: to defend the electoral system that several generations of Mexicans built," former INE chairman Jose Woldenberg told the crowd in a speech at the close of the procession.

Lopez Obrador alleges that the INE endorsed fraud when he ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 2006 and 2012, before winning in 2018.

Under his proposal, the INE would be replaced by a new body with members chosen by voters instead of lawmakers and with a smaller budget. Political parties would also receive less money from the government for campaigning.

Lopez Obrador's critics say he is damaging democratic checks and balances with his attacks on the INE and other institutions.

His proposals, which involve amending the constitution, require support from at least two-thirds of lower house lawmakers.

Many of the demonstrators wore pink -- the color associated with the INE.

Graciela Aberel, a 53-year-old English teacher, said the proposed change amounts to letting the government organize elections, as was the case before INE was created in 1990.

"What he wants is for all the elections to depend on the government, so as to manipulate them at his whim and be able to stay in power," said Aberel.

The next presidential election is scheduled for 2024, when Lopez Obrador's six-year term ends. Presidents here can only serve one term.

Some in the crowd carried banners that read, "I am not corrupt, class-conscious, racist or hypocritical." This alluded to adjectives the president used last week to describe those who planned to take part in Sunday's rally.

High profile people from the world of politics also took part in the rally, such as former president Vicente Fox and the speaker of the chamber of deputies, Santiago Creel. Both are members of the opposition conservative PAN party.

The rally, which came on the president's 69th birthday, was so big that many people did not fit into the area where the closing speech was delivered.

Francisco Videla, a 50 year old merchant, said the protest was not just against the current government.

"It is against any government that, now or in the future, wants to take control of elections," said Videla.

The president's proposal would also reduce the number of seats in the lower house of congress from 500 to 300, and those in the Senate from 128 to 96.
